I was away from home and my laptop last night so I’ll let you in on yesterday’s scary movie because I know you were missing it last night when I didn’t post.
I watched the new Hellraiser movie. I thought it was pretty good.
Tumblr media
Tons and tons of fanboi tears about this reboot of the 1980s Hellraiser franchise. Apparently even though the demonic Cenobites originally envisioned by author Clive Barker were (according to him) genderless extrapolations of gay BDSM archetypes
Tumblr media
weren’t the fanbois crying fanboi tears about the casting of transwoman Jamie Clayton as the iconic Priest of Hell known in the popular zeitgeist by the affectionate nickname “Pinhead.” Oh, how angry they were that Pinhead, a completely imaginary monster, was going to be an icky girl. Franchise destroyed, you’re ruining my childhood, why does everything have to be so gay (see aforementioned gay archetype discussion), blah and blah and blah blah blah.
Jamie Clayton as the updated version of Pinhead got accolades from both Clive Barker and Doug Bradley, who played the previous version, not that anyone necessarily needs their approval. Jamie looks amazing, and that VOICE. Well done, sound designers. Scary as hell.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the plot of the movie involves a newly-clean junkie, Riley, accidentally acquiring the famous puzzle box, the Lament Configuration (or, at least, previously referred to as the Lament Configuration--the reboot adds some interesting lore which explains the box’s several configurations, including Lament, Lore, Leviathan, and Lazarus among others), and then, as the box is wont to do. . .opening the gates of hell, summoning forth the Cenobites to claim human sacrifices they will torment eternally.
Tumblr media
Riley and her boyfriend, her brother and his boyfriend, and their roommate endeavour to understand what is happening and how to undo it. Road trip, Berkshires mansion, the Serbian doctor from ER and that one Madonna video whose first name I think I remember is Goran, puzzles puzzles all around, so many accidental stabbings, scary demons (of course), and a final girl who is flawed and wholly sympathetic. Very gory, but you knew that.
My only criticism is that the movie is perhaps too long, at around 2 hours. For a horror movie to be 2 hours long, it really needs to earn it, and I don’t feel that this one earns it. Just when I felt the crescendo coming, there were still 45 minutes left. The story is compelling enough, but things could have moved a little quicker. But as a Hellraiser fan from waaayyyyy back, I stand behind this reboot; far from demeaning the legacy of the franchise (which was uneven at best, tbh), this reimagining of Barker’s world adds to it.

Thirty One Days of Horror Movies! Day Eight :D
Tumblr media
:D
I mean you all guessed it had to be this one today, right?
HELLRAISER :D
When recovering addict Riley and her boyfriend Trevor rob a container belonging to the wealthy and sinister Roland Voight they end up with more than they bargained for when a certain puzzle box ends up in Riley’s posession...a box that once opened brings her to the attention of the infamous Cenobites and puts her and her friends and loved ones on a path to horrors beyond imagining...
Proving that 2022 is a year of good surprises as well as bad, this year delivers something I thought I may never see again in my lifetime...A GOOD HELLRAISER MOVIE. After years of in-name-only sequels and one very terrible earlier attempt at a reboot that was so bad Clive Barker insisted they take his name off it, we finally have a movie that can stand alongside the first three films as being genuinely ACTUALLY good
The film has an excellent cast and I most of all have to gush about the utterly incredible Jamie Clayton. Anyone who had doubts about someone else being able to fill Doug Bradley’s shoes can put those aside as her performance here as the Cenobite Priest (Or “Pinhead” as the fandom likes to call them) is fantastic...returning the menace the character had in earlier films mixed with a strange otherworldly seductiveness that suits the themes behind the Cenobites as beings that embody the absolute extremes of pleasure and pain. She’s clearly loving getting the chance to play such a horror icon here and she’s fantastic <3
The plot is well written with some enoyable twists and turns along the way, one of which I genuinely never saw coming and with scenes that return the movie to the disturbing, visceral and horrific roots of the franchise after years of “Sequels” that felt more like low budget slasher movies than true Hellraiser films
The practical effects are fantastic and the revamped designs for the Cenobites are incredible. They truly feel like they could have been plucked right from Clive Barker’s wonderfully warped imagination here
While the film has some nice nods to the first movie this also serves as an enjoyable story in its own right...and I’m very glad that despite this being a reboot they decided to tell a new story here rather than attempt to remake the first film
I would say if your a horror fan and especially if your a Hellraiser fan you are going to absolutely love this movie and personally I hope that this film will just be the start of a new chapter in the franchise with more movies to come
Give this movie a watch
IT HAS SUCH SIGHTS TO SHOW YOU :D

Some of my fav horror sims :D
I took a few creative liberties with some characters. Obviously characters like Jason, Leatherface and Michael are practically identical to their regular designs, but by Sadako, Pinhead and Freddy are more unique.
My Sadako sim had to kind of be more unique because I could not find her hair. I found an alpha hair but it was the American version which looks different so I just couldn’t find it and had to use a similar style.
Freddy Krueger is my least favourite Slasher, I don’t like him as much as others, but I had to add him because it’s my Sims slasher world, so I based it off the Bishoujo horror figurine, hence why he’s a hot blonde girl. I did make her more film accurate in her vampire dark form, where she’s burnt and scarred but I didn’t show that here.
Pinhead I tried to mix three designs. First, the iconic film, second the book description and finally the remake appearance. That and also I was limited by CC so… anyways, facially they’re based on Jamie Clayton’s appearance in the 2022 film, and the dress is based on the original film depiction. It’s hard to see but I did incorporate bells into their design, which was in the book.
Pig only really looks like that because that’s the only Pig mask I could find and nobody has made Jigsaw’s cloak so…

The Wicked + The Divine: Okay by Kieron Gillen. Art by Jamie McKelvie. Coloured by Matt Wilson. Lettering by Clayton Cowles.
Tumblr media
Series: The Wicked + The Divine, #9 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5
The quote: "Oh, David. I have done many awful necessary things. But you had a choice... ...and even at this late date, all your choices were bad. I'll tell you this. I've been around a long long time. And I am oh so bored of men like you." — Ananke
This is a great and fitting ending to a series. It wraps up the storylines well and leaves the reader with a message. It does this while delivering emotional hits with no less weight than other volumes (more importantly issues) in the series. The last pages are, I think, an echo of a moment earlier in the series. Characters are all given their own moments, moments to remind the reader that they are human, also reminders that "people never really die" (Laura) and the power of love.
This whole thing starts with a series of videos about Baal's last gig. One of them is just so adorable, Tom is an everyday person we've met before that I didn't see again. He appears in The Imperial Phase: Part 1 in a discussion with Persephone. "Please! We... have a question." "Uh-huh?" "Some texts say your cult wasn't allowed to say your name We... wanted to honour that. What do you want to be addressed as?" "The Destroyer." Tom does make it clear that this is him. He's not just a Persephone fan, he's a Baal fan. And like so many of us he thinks Inanna is hot. The video itself is him doing the fan thing, opening the ticket, queueing and going to the gig. It's an inside view of the gig and maybe a sense of the betrayal that fans will feel towards the remaining gods. Just after this three of our four heads (Jon, Inanna and Lucifer) get bodies back with the help of Nergal/Cameron after visiting him in the cathedral he has built for The Morrigan. He allows them to take The Morrigan's bodies in a moment of catharsis in a way. What I did notice is that Lucifer honours The Morrigan, specifically Badb, by keeping her red hair (though in Luci's iconic style).
I can honestly say that of all the books that have made me tear up this is the one I least expected. It's not the deaths per se it's the loss of potential and the way they happen. Just to be clear warnings for suicide, murder and attempted murder.
I don't remember seeing the birth names of all the gods before. This is a tiny bit spoilerly so read on at your own peril. • Persephone — Laura Wilson • Urðr — Cassandra • Skuld & Verðandi — Meredith and Zoe (the other two thirds of The Norn) • Lucifer — Eleanor • Baal — Valentine • Inanna — Zahid • Baphomet/Nergal — Cameron • The Morrigan — Marion • Dionysus — Umar • Woden — David Blake • Mimir — Jon Blake • Amaterasu — Emily Greenway • Tara — Aruna • I can't find names for Ananke, Minerva or Sakhmet in the volumes I have available.
I made the choice to skip Volume 8 of WicDiv because it is a collection of special issues set apart from the main storyline. If I was to come back and reread the series I would read Vol. 8: Old Is the New New. But am only half invested in the series, ie invested enough to want to know how the series ends but not invested enough to spend more time with the characters. As it is I have a bit of time pressure to finish the books and get them reviewed before I have to return them.

Thoughts on HELLRAISER (2022)
The Hellraiser movies are... weird. And I don't mean the kind of weird they usually are.
Pinhead and his Cenobite homies are usually not the central antagonists of the movies in which they feature. There are protagonists, there are antagonists, and the Cenobites are usually neutral tertiary characters. Someone solves the Lament Configuration, Pinhead shows up, and he's all "Oh, so you like puzzles huh? Well, maybe you'll also like hooks in your taint." Thus ensues Pinhead's mild confusion that the person who solved the configuration thinking hooks in the taint wasn't the particular jam they signed up for.
This is such a strange and narrow needle to thread that, in one of the most controversial of my opinions among my horror loving friends, I don't think the Hellraiser franchise ever produced a good movie in its initial run. There were ten of the fucking things between 1987 and 2022, and none of them were good. The only comparable record among horror icons was Leatherface, who had only one good movie. Though, to be fair, that one good movie just happened to be the best movie of the seventies, and the greatest all-around horror movie ever made.
Pinhead was the Detroit Lions of horror.
But the Lions eventually won a game, and Pinhead eventually got a good movie. This Hellraiser reboot is only one of these damned things I like. It found a reasonable solution to its bizarre alchemical mix, and whoda thunk that its secret to success was in its main protagonist?
Her name is Riley, she's played by a wonderfully game Odessa A'zion, and she provides a terrific counterpoint to the creepy debauchery around her by being flawed, but still trying to be the best person she can possibly be. She's sincere, resourceful, and comes up at the midway point of the film with a gambit to foil the Cenobites that made me laugh with how gutsy and intelligent it was. Riley is a character you want to follow, and A'zion is an actress that I want to see in other things. Hers is a performance that one can easily compare to Amber Midthunder's splendid star-making turn in Prey from a few months back.
But Prey is a masterpiece. This new Hellraiser is just "good." It feels strange to say, but this movie could have used more gore. There is a feeling attendant to Hellraiser movies that a line should be crossed, but this new one doesn't cross it. For its other virtues, it feels weirdly prim.
But that isn't the fault of the Cenobites themselves. They're wonderfully designed, and Jamie Clayton as Pinhead is charismatic enough to get me interested in another movie, even if this one didn't pan out.
This new Hellraiser is good. It's fine. It provide the gory spookums that people were looking for from the more ambitious but more divisive Halloween Ends. No more and no less.
But hey, like I said, Hellraiser is a good idea that's been looking for a good movie since the eighties. I'll take whatever drops of water in the Sahara I can get.

While I think the new Hellraiser is a good movie, I think my biggest complaint with it is the changes it makes to the lore and how the cenobites lacked some key elements of their identity. I feel like if you swapped them with any other generic horror creature and it would have worked (and maybe better)
It does get a lot of good will from me bc of Jamie Clayton, seeing a trans woman play an iconic horror villain means so much to me

2022 Horror Challenge: [30/?]
↳ “Greater delights await. We wish to see you proceed.” Hellraiser (2022) dir. David Bruckner
Plot: A take on Clive Barker's 1987 horror classic where a young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites.
Starring: Odessa A'zion, Jamie Clayton, Brandon Flynn, Goran Višnjić, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aoife Hinds, Selina Lo & Hiam Abbass
Well, I checked this out. As someone who went in not necessarily having the strongest fondness for the original (mostly because it’s been a bit since the last time I watched it. That said, Doug Bradley remains iconic as Pinhead), I didn’t know what to expect. It’s essentially a reboot that didn’t need to be made but I do think it was made with good intentions. It’s retreading familiar territory w/ the Cenobites but in a very different way. It doesn’t always work but there are some moments where it didn’t hold back with the goriness. It’s hard to care for the characters as much as you’d like but the acting from everybody was good imo, especially Odessa A’zion as the lead. I feel like Jamie did the best she could with what she was given to make her Pinhead her own. The aesthetic of the movie was pretty eerie throughout so there’s that. Overall, I wasn’t completely invested but as far as reboots, I’d say it was decent enough.

HELLRAISER’s new Pinhead looks ready to deal her own kind of Hell while honoring legacy
.@MsJamieClayton is the new Pinhead and she looks terrifying. #Hulu #Hellraiser #horror
Pinhead is the kind of horror icon that is recognizable even to those who might not have seen a single Hellraiser movie. A head full of nails and an elegantly dark and leathery costume design that finds a sense of twisted beauty in pain and suffering proved the right combination to achieve this during Doug Bradley’s tenure as the Hell priest. Now it’s actress Jamie Clayton’s turn to push the…
