I think some people have this false idea that content focused on queer characters is only for queer people, and that straight people aren’t going to want to watch it

But today I was reminded how much my cishet 50-something year old manager loves Our Flag Means Death

She was very excited to show me her new “certified gentleman pirate” pin this morning and wants me to keep her updated on news for season two of the show

As far as I’m aware she doesn’t even consider it a “gay show.” Just a fun comedy with lovely characters. I think more creators and consumers need to recognize that just as queer people will watch shows with straight romance, your audience isn’t limited by writing queer characters
