What makes Elementary superior to the Cumberbatch Sherlock for you?

PS X-Files was my first grown up appointment TV show....

My Darlin' Dearest Norah,

I want to preface this by saying I do like BBC Sherlock because I know there are some pretty intense camps out there on both sides and I don't want anyone coming for me lol. I definitely think there is room for both in the canon. I will also say it has been quite a while since I watched the BBC version, so make of that what you will...

However, I prefer Elementary for a few reasons:

One, while I think the highly stylistic "movie" sort of quality to the BBC version is interesting, it gives Sherlock this sort of superhero-esque quality that makes him so "other" it's hard to relate to him in any way. Like I think he's cool in an objective way, but I don't really like him much or find him very redeemable. And the attitude around him is kind of like, "Well, that's just Sherlock! He's just a brilliant asshole!" and it just...stays that way.

(Now don't get me wrong, I love all the actors in both versions for a multitude of different reasons! But the writing lends itself to highly different interpretations from an actor's perspective.)

I prefer the realism of Elementary more. I absolutely love the characterization of both Sherlock and Joan. They feel like dynamic, flawed but redeemable characters who are fleshed out in most every way. They learn and grow and change in crucial ways throughout the series. Sherlock's behavior and neurodivergency are explained but not used as cop-outs or excuses for his not-so-nice treatment of people. He faces very real consequences in his relationships because of it and because of his drug addiction, but the key difference is that he figures out he wants to do better, especially for the people he comes to care deeply for. He tries, in his weird Sherlock way, to connect, because he starts to realize that yes, he is brilliant, but his actions affect others, and that being totally alone is not all it's cracked up to be. And Joan is very much her own person who struggles with her own issues and relationships with people and with the direction she wants her life to go. She (unwillingly at first) learns these new things about how to look at the world and how to help people in a different way, and she doesn't take a backseat to Sherlock. After the first season, she becomes a true partner to him, not a sidekick, and I really appreciate that.

Part of it is there is just more time over 7 traditional seasons to explore character arc, versus the wonky "we put seasons out whenever it works for us" way of BBC. The nuances are much more developed over time in a more natural way for Elementary.

Not to mention that the gender-bending in Elementary is just *chef's kiss*. They did it so well, you'd hardly know it was any other way!

Back to character, I just think Johnny Lee Miller knocked that role completely out of the park. He was absolutely stunning in playing those subtle changes and emotional moments and showing Sherlock's growth over time. He was multi-dimensional and it made his growth heartbreaking and lovely. He should've won a million Emmy's for that performance. And honestly, as much as I like Benedict (and I do), I truly think Johnny is the better actor overall (side note--if you ever get a chance, watch both versions of the Frankenstein production that they did together for the National Theatre in London, where they switch roles, both playing the monster and Dr. F for different performances. It's brilliant! But I do think Johnny is much better as the monster. 😊) And Lucy Liu is just a badass and I love her, too, and the chemistry between them is just awesome. They play those comic moments so well, too.

And I'm not gonna lie, I'm 100% a Sherlock x Joan shipper, and the writing in Elementary was fantastic in this way, because it left it open enough for the audience to decide for themselves what kind of love we were dealing with there. But the shippy moments were soooo good, imo. You named a bee after me? We're just two people who love each other... Come ON. Beautiful. Fabulous. Fantastic. And the ending? I wept.

I also think Elementary dealt with the addiction piece much much much better. The realism of going to AA, dealing with the fallout of relationships, relapses, the ongoing challenge of always being an addict was just so much more poignant without being a crutch. Similar thoughts about how the neurodivergency and PTSD were handled.

Anyway, I could probably go on, but this is long enough already! TL;DR: I just think Elementary is better in all the ways: writing, acting, arcs, relationships...LOL

Tomura has grown on me throughout the series. He's my second favorite character in the series, Dabi will always be my favorite. They've been hurt time and time again, beaten down, seen the worst of humanity, but they've still made a family for themselves and are doing everything they can to protect it.

It's funny because in my group of friends I was the last to get into bnha and Iida was my first blorbo.

I remember that as soon as Tomura appeared on screen I new I would get obsessed with him, to the point I silently begged myself to please don't fall AGAIN for the villain. The whole episode I tried really hard to ignore him, until he scratched his neck and then I was doomed. It was the first time I saw a character with a scratching problem that came from his anxiety, something I can identify myself with.

TWO separate groups of friends that were into bnha and none of them had a clue why I liked the main villain so much. Some of my friends were even against him, but respected my choices. So I made it my mission for people to understand just how great Tomura was as a character and why he was not simply the evil type of guy, but a complex villain who could even by called a failed MC.

Then I met Dabi and holy shit, people would make the same mistake. Did no one else saw that Dabi and Tomura were victims? Did no one else noticed what Horikoshi wss doing? I started to search on here and I didn't find enough material. Why would people want to ignore to of the best characters on the whole series? That's I created this blog, lol.

Dabi and Tomura (the whole League of Villains to be precise) represent all those aspects of trauma and survivors of abuse that are seen as negative in our societies. They were strange, weird, they made people uncomfortable, they couldn't even cry like "normal" victims, but maniacally laugh. They didn't have the option to do things "the right way". They were not material for the inspirational stories that you would see in magazines or on tv in some random show, those were reserved for heroes and good children, people who were either attractive or you could easily feel compassion for.

I got soooo easily obssesed.

The League was quirky, different, hard to sanitize like people would do with other characters. They were violent and full of rage, true to themselves, scary, unattractive on classic standards, cruel to the soft protagonists. While people got distracted by all of that, the superficial, they ignored their gentleness. Tomura calmly answering to Toga and not exploding in rage. Toga taking care of Twice and his wound. Them avenging Magne. Compress being worried about Toga wellbeing. Tomura not punishing Twice for his mistakes. Dabi crying real blood for his family. Them still carrying Magne's weapon even after she was dead. All the details.

I love the League, specially Tomura (I kin him), but they are dear to me because I also fight to defend them online and the story didn't prove me wrong. That's special. For many of us.

So I'm glad to hear you enjoy them and I'm glad to hear you love so much Dabi and Tomura!!!!!!!!!

Sanji. Just Sanji. You know he's my least favourite character in all of anything and ever. I cannot stand how he treats female characters and I can't stand how much Oda loves him and I just cannot stand him. Every time he's around I grit my teeth and wait for the plot to move on for the love of god please. It'd have been fine if like...at some point he learned what he was doing and how he treats women aren't actually being a "gentlemen" but him being a fucking douche and seeing women as a wholly different concept that people but he doesn't! And I never believe he will!

The lack of Robin and Nami storylines and involvement after the time skip. I know later there's a thing where Oda says all women are princesses or whatever but my god does it annoy me when the two of them barely get to show up in battles and stuff. I get it, Robin is overpowered and you made that and now you don't know how to handle it but Oda you did that to yourself so live with it and fucking involve her more. I want her to get the last hit in, I want her to burn down the government like they burned down her home. I want Nami to get more than just a fucking bikini shot and whack a guy with her quarterstaff now and then. There's just this shift in how they're written pre and post time skip that's never sat well with me.

Also just how women outside the crew are written. I'm so tired of damsel, I miss when you had Vivi and she wouldn't just stand by and let someone else help her homeland, she had to help too. Like again, it's especially prevalent after the timeskip. And their bodies, like it's bad. They're drawn bad. I get it's a wacky world anyway but there's barely variety for women like there are for male characters. They're either very fat in a ridiculous way or back breakingly thin with huge boobs.

While I wouldn't change how Yamato was written, Oda just fucking say Yamato is a transman, I cannot stand how fandom 'well actually's on this. That's my son whom I love and who identifies as a man, he isn't just 'kinning' hard. I guess I'd change how fuzzy that is and step down harder on saying Yamato is trans everyone shut the fuck up.

Also I would change Yamato not joining the crew, like jesus I just needed that win so so badly Ceci. I needed it deep in my soul and I miss him and I haven't really read after the Wano arc because I'm upset he's gone and the new arc just hasn't really grabbed me.

but like, the thing with 'kin is it's a specific belief about the self. what kinnies are doing is closer to face-claiming (thinking a character/animal/etc. is a good representation of you and presenting yourself as them in online spaces) rather than what being otherkin is (believing yourself to actually be a character/animal/etc. on some intrinsic level)

im an inclusionist which is why i welcome kinnies in the general alterhuman community, i do think we have a lot of things to learn from each other, but we are 2 completely different communities that simply got conflated due to a lack of information. our experiences are so different it's really not comparable to someone having a less strong belief, because fundamentally we really don't believe the same thing at all and it can cause both kinnies and otherkin people confusion when talking about it which is where a lot of that frustration comes from.

i fully support kinnies but i've also had some really bad experiences with them, entering spaces labelled as "kin" and then getting laughed at and called crazy. i'm not alone in this and it happened enough times that at this point i have a hard time trusting kinnies. while i trust not all kinnies are like that, it's also a part of their community they've mostly failed to address and us using the same terminology in such different ways makes dialogue hard. i think a simple switching up of words ("click/clicking" has been proposed as an alternative to "kin/kinning" in that sense and i really like it personally) would go a long way with distincting us and would be beneficial for everyone here!

with all due respect anon but this isn't accurate at all to the term and delineating between "kinnies" and "otherkin" isn't....like a set thing. kinnie is literally just a shortened joke version of "otherkin" and "fictionkin" people who were other/fictionkin created as a joke to refer to themselves as. determining whether or not someone is serious about kinning based on them calling themselves a kinnie isn't a good metric by any means, it's only really just a metric about how seriously someone takes themselves.

i'm a kinnie. i exclusively refer to myself as a kinnie and don't like referring to myself as fictionkin or otherkin at all, and my legal name is Dirk Strider. I also think that me saying i kin a guy from an episode of a second rate tv show that only appears for ten minutes even if i don't really think I'm him isn't diluting the word or making anyone else's understanding of themselves who refer to themselves that way 'less meaningful,' and incredibly popular philosophical argument in inclusionist communities you should keep in mind everyone i know who kins also primarily refers to themselves as kinnies as well; i just dont think the point you're making here of "kinnies are different" isn't accurate in the sense of "kinnies believe this" or "kinnies don't believe this" i guess. as for the "being called crazy" thing, thats an ableism thing, and again im not sure if going "well you need to call yourselves something different so i dont go into your spaces" is a solution here because that doesn't fix the ableism or the fact that ultimately for another example; if someone goes into certain system servers and talks about soulbonds and is not taken seriously that those people need to not call their space a system space, its just not a space that is under that umbrella that is going to suit that persons needs- requiring others to describe themselves differently because they don't ascribe to a specific belief among an extensive collection of philosophies just is not the solution here. tldr: i'm still up for discussing this stuff further but i dont think making a line between "kinnie" and "otherkin" here is.....an actual distinction that indicates anything about how serious or inclined someone is to understand your particular philosophy and saying "what kinnies are doing is xyz" is about as helpful to a situation as saying "what homestucks are doing is xyz," the term 'kinnie' doesn't indicate nearly as much about belief systems as you think it does

well first of all, jett kins marshall lee so that’s that on THAT. adventure time was a big part of eric's (jetts older brother) child/teen years, so he made sure jett watched all of it at least once. and then jett watched it many more times after because it loves to do Rewatch Projects of stuff from its childhood instead of watching new stuff lol. it has like a list of things it cycles through hyperfixating on and adventure time is one of them

and melody is definitely a fan!! she has done multiple princess bubblegum cosplays over the years :) she even made a BMO prop !! she never actually finished the series (tried to watch all of it well after it ended but life got in the way and she never got around to it) but she’s a huge bubbline fan of course. i think she would watch fionna and cake and be like “wow that was really cool and interesting and emotional i bet it would be even better if i actually watched the entire original series and had more context but i don’t have time to do that so oh well” and jett shakes her by the shoulders and begs her to do a rewatch of the whole series with tears in its eyes but she never gets around to it (i’m projecting so hard right now)

as for the rest of the gang, none of them are really the type to go and watch a whole tv show *shrugs*! tate might if he were recommended it hard enough, but psy doesn't really like tv shows and much prefers movies and books. and guy is just far too busy

Most of the pre-existing Heartstopper fan base and certainly most of the fans on Tumblr are the Charlie Springs of the world. And for them, this show is about the possibility of healthy romance (i want to believe in romaaance) and creating a loving queer community.

But, gosh, I hope the Nick Nelsons of the world find this show. Now that Heartstopper is in the mainstream, I hope the people who have more marginalized identities, who never thought about being anything other than straight but for whom straight doesn’t feel *quite* right, those who deal with toxic masculinity/femininity and don’t feel like they have real friends, this show is for them as much as the Charlies.

And I hope the Nicks who watch this show seek out their Charlies, Taras, Darcys, Elles, Taos, Isaacs, etc. and find a community that loves them for who they are. And I hope one thing you Charlies, Taras, Darcys, Elles, Taos, Isaacs, etc. take from this show is to reach out. This show is so good at demonstrating how being yourself makes others want to be themselves, too!

FINALLY ALL TROLLS DONE. Honestly this took too long. But here they are, all my fantrolls in one place. Many years of Roleplays has spawned many of these fuckers. The fankids are next + couple bonus characters. I will be posting more art and things about this bunch as time comes. until then, have little blurbs about my favorites to get to know them:

Briose Lantic: (she/Her) Young Heiress, full of energy. She loves a good challenge and hates being told what to do, hates math even more.

Ashtar Donner: (She/they) Sonic the Hedgehog kin (gotta go fast), weak psionics but thankfully enough to use to her advantage. Hopelessly falls in love with any edgy/anime-esque boy

Mantis Zirkus: (he/Him) ringleader of Calamity Circus, he takes in lost and helpless trolls and uses them for profit in exchange of keeping them safe, Dont fucking call him short you will end up scorched, his chucklevoodoos is Pyrokinesis which helps set the mood for his circus and gets him respect, Has made plenty of enemies, Bovino is his Kismesis

Bovino Marone: (he/him) animal wrangler for Calamity Circus, sort of second in command, loves to push buttons, doesnt like the spotlight he leaves that for every one else, he also takes good care of the crew when Mantis needs help

Adarra Timbre: (he/they) Main Jester for the Calamity Circus, youngest of the crew, nearly culled by the Heiress saved by the circus, can tell a good joke or two mostly, hes cute give him all your money

Ignisa Espurn: (she/her) acrobat for Calamity Circus, another soul saved by Mantis, Psionics + death defying acts = the big bucks, after the show she's usually by herself, trying to save money to get a better life but is unsure the Circus will be willing to let her go

Ballon Diocis: (she/her) Fortune teller for the Calamity Circus, been here since the beginning, Her chucklevoodoos aid her in mindreading which allows her to 'predict' some ones future by just telling them what they want to hear, She loves to gossip, keeps the others in line while telling Mantis all the going ons amongst the crew -* i will add more to these characters later

Current Read: Death Warrant - Bryon Johnston

Death Makes Great TV

I am trying so hard to get through this book, it’s such an interesting premise - think Truman Show but with assassination. People volunteer to be part of “Death Warrant” a TV show that televises the participant’s death, which happens in various ways at undisclosed times. Once you agree to participate your mind is wiped and you go about your life until it’s terminated. The higher the views the higher payout for your next of kin.

The author does a really good job describing the show and how it works. When discussing an episode, it’s so vivid - it’s disturbing. But when we get the perspective of the main character, Frankie, it just throws me out of it. I’ve never read a book where I immediately thought, she’s written by a male, but this was my first thought (had to go back and see who wrote the book). Her internal monologue is so judgy of other background females it’s annoying. Like in movies where the character is like “I’m not like other girls, I’m …”. I can’t even give book specific examples because there’s so many.

As much I want to know what happens, I’m not sure I can make it through her chapters and probably won’t finish the book.

Every day I thank god that I had a name in mind for years before I started using it because I was very into supernatural while I was just starting to transition and knowing me there is a substantial chance I would have named myself Dean if I hadn’t liked the name Dylan since I was like 8

you excitedly yell out as you burst into your boyfriend’s room. he was taken by surprise and quite literally jumped from his sitting position on his bed. you had decided to surprise your boyfriend and his brother was in on it.

“h-hey hun, what’re you doin here?”

“hm? just wanted to hang out with you~”

you chimed, raising your hand to show a bag of snacks.

“let’s have a movie marathon!”

you suggested, plopping onto his bed, sitting beside him. souya nodded, giving you a soft smile and going over to set up his tv.

the both of you decided on a movie to watch and indulged yourselves in the amount of snacks you brought while enjoying the movie.

but as your focus was on the movie, souya’s focus was on you instead. the way the light from the tv illuminated your features and how your breathing was slow as you watched the movie. souya’s cheeks flushed at how pretty you looked to him. his gaze constantly shifts between your lips to your hand resting beside him to your shoulders, he really really wants to be closer to you but he was afraid to. he had been debating with himself for the past 30 minutes.

he takes a deep breath in and slowly inches his fingers to your hand, lightly touching your fingers. he looks at your face for any signs of discomfort but you showed none, and so he decides to put his shyness aside and place his hand on top of yours.

your gaze instantly shifted from the screen to his, making him tense up and remove his hand.

“s-sorry-“

“no.. it’s okay..”

you mumbled to him, at lost for words at his sudden bold move. souya wasn’t one to initiate anything so for him to hold your hand caught you off guard.

souya then places his hand on top of yours once again and he blushes at you gently wrapping your fingers around his. he smiles at you, heart swelling, he can’t wait to do more things with you, one step at a time.

“You look utterly foolish,” Kíli sat, cross-legged, on his bed and teased his brother mercilessly.

“Thank you, Kí, you make me feel like a prince,” Fíli grumbled, wriggling his ass a bit as he tried to decide which pair of jeans would look best on a horse without making him so uncomfortable that he’d just drop off the animal.

After the huge breakdown of the first evening, things had gone well in their little community and oftentimes, he felt like they were in a reality TV show rather than in real life because the women always managed to make things appear out of thin air.

By now, he was slightly worried to put on weight because there was always food in the larder and – on the days where he went from his classes to the forge without having a break – Lo had literally packed him a lunch.

For a second, he had been nervous that his master would make fun of him, but he had merely commented on what a good girlfriend he had and Fíli had pretended that there was too much smoke in the room, irritating his eyes and his throat.

Exactly 3 hours ago, he had arrived at home, showered thoroughly, plundered his kin’s vegetable garden, and become the butt of Kí’s jokes; only another one before Lo would – presumably – arrive to take him riding.

He wanted to do well; he still had the need to prove himself to her and to do her proud.

“She’s in love with you, Fí, you’ll look fine to her,” Kí smiled and looked so much like their mother that Fíli’s heart softened; he loved his brother and – even if he didn’t want to admit it out loud – he wanted him to be proud of his big brother.

“If I don’t fuck this up,” Fíli muttered under his breath.

“Am I the only one who has any faith in these girls? They like you,” Kíli shrugged, “and that’s what you’ve wanted, so why won’t you believe it now that it has happened?”

“Have you seen them, Kí? If I fall off that horse, she’ll laugh at me,” Fíli muttered miserably.

“Yes, she will! And then, she’ll help you up and – worst case scenario – drive you to the hospital,” Kíli replied light-heartedly.

Fí had been his rock, always, but he was not ignorant of the weaknesses of his personal hero; Fí was stubbornly proud, something he might have copied from Thorin, and he had a hard time letting people see how vulnerable he really was.

“She’s got you, Fí,” Kíli said softly, “you don’t have to know what’s going to happen all the time. Trust her! She knows what she’s doing, never doubt that.”

Being the man of the house, Fí had watched for dangers that could potentially befall his mother or his baby brother tirelessly, it had become second nature and first instinct to him and so, he couldn’t ever really relax.

It was almost impossible for him to imagine letting someone else take the reins – literally – and just enjoy the ride.

“Kí, wear something nice when your brother’s girlfriend is coming over,” their mother thundered from the open door, “and you, son of mine, wear pants at all to begin with. Chop chop, we don’t have all day!”

“Thorin is one bad idea away from repainting the house just to make it look more inviting to a girl who doesn’t give a crap,” Dwalin grinned as Thorin was straightening knickknacks obsessively while glancing at the old-fashioned clock on the wall every two minutes.

Him and Balin had watched Thorin find and iron one of his rare sweatshirts that were not black, which meant that they could clearly see the treacherous stains of nervous sweating spreading out in his armpits.

“She’ll come,” Thorin was muttering under his breath, again and again, looking out of the window periodically.

He knew that Tova had a late class and would probably go back to the flat to change, so there was no need to be this impatient, but he still couldn’t quite believe that she’d show up here on her bike and take him out.

Having done whatever he could around the flat to make himself agreeable, there had been a comfortable atmosphere lately; even Jia really seemed to have warmed up to him, allowing the occasional hug and smiling at him often.

Still, that nagging fear at the back of his mind was still there; what if he wasn’t good enough? What if something terrible had happened to Tova? What if she saw the house and just turned around?

No, she’d said she’d come and Tova was a woman of her word, he told himself repetitively; she’d be there.

A fool, that was what she called him all the time, and maybe, just maybe, he was.

Oh, but how he was looking forward to sitting behind her while she steered them up winding paths to the highest cliff; life was easy when she was around.

Tova made him feel safe, like before his father had run away, she gave him the impression that things would turn out well even if he did not keep a constant eye on them.

And she loved him.

She loved him in that steadfast way he had loved other people his whole life, fearlessly, steadily, recklessly maybe.

Tova didn’t hesitate; she didn’t hold back because she was afraid, and her bravery made him feel a little more solid as well.

He loved them; he loved how his life had turned out with those women.

Slowly, the person he had once been came back to the surface and he was glad to welcome it in his life; Tova understood all his – silly – instincts and encouraged them, she let him be overly worried and slightly brooding about things that were not worth a second thought, and she was always there to calm and assuage him when the ghosts were too many or too much for him to handle.

Lo reminded him a lot of his own sister: cheeky and adventurous, she was the perfect partner for Fí, he couldn’t deny that. Thorin could appreciate that his cousin was coming back to life again as well, that the small boy who had been been running wild in the forest fighting imaginary monsters with sticks and stones had matured into a fierce and skilled young man who was devoted to that mischievous princess no tower would be able to hold.

Jia was skittish to say the least, but heavens, she was smart and a hard worker; she deserved Ori and Ori deserved her. Thorin would never quite understand how they could spend hours hunched over books, sniggering and discussing passages, but he knew that he’d want to keep them around forever.

The realisation hit him quite suddenly: he had been relying on these men growing up and he had started to rely on their girlfriends to show up and have his back figuratively as well; not only did he see a future, but he saw them in it.

“Stop it, Dori, you’re making the kid dizzy,” Nori leaned against the kitchen counter as his brother was preparing what looked like high tea; he was fumbling and fussing and looked as if he was about to break into tears at any given moment.

“You think she really loves you?” Dori asked for the umpteenth time, his brow darkened by worry despite the desperate hope in his eyes.

“She says so, yes,” Ori muttered, pulling uncomfortably at the white button-down he was wearing under his sweatshirt.

“Stop! Dori! Come on, you’ve raised a good kid there,” Nori grinned, gripping his brother by the shoulders and shaking him lightly.

“You better be on your best behaviour, you rogue,” Dori grumbled, and Nori flinched back as if slapped; he’d never want to ruin this for his baby brother, not in a million years. As much as he struggled with Dori and his ways sometimes, they both loved their little brother and would move heaven and earth for his sake.

“It’s okay, I’ve warned her about you two being…special,” Ori grinned, wondering if Jia would laugh about the tan, primly starched trousers and the button-down under the sweater; he looked like the proverbial eager beaver and his glasses kept slipping.

Jia would eat it up, he thought with a sly smile; every time he looked his least favourable – in his own eyes – he somehow found himself wedged between furniture, her heat soaking his hands and her mouth on his throat.

Jeez, this was not the time for an unfortunate and ill-timed boner, but God, he really was looking forward to boat-sex.

“What do you mean ‘special’?” Dori sounded horrified by the admission.

“I love her, I mean, I love love her and…I love you, so I’ve told her the truth,” Ori smiled softly.

“And you still think she’s coming here?” Dori exclaimed, throwing a tea towel over Nori’s head as if that made anything better.

“She’ll be uncomfortable, but she loves being fussed over,” Ori shared his knowledge with them as well, desperate for this to go over well, “She lets us drive her home and she’s a terrible cuddle-bug once she knows that you won’t harm her. Just be yourselves!”

“DON’T be yourself!” Dori screeched at Nori, “DO NOT – UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE – BE YOURSELF!”

They were shuffling around in the tiny kitchen, the water had been brought to a boil 5 times already, in a word, they were more nervous than they cared to admit, but also full of anticipation.

“See you at the lake?” Tova hugged both me and Lo shortly before grabbing her biking helmet and zipping up her protective suit.

“Yes, see you there in a few hours,” Lo grinned, stretching in her tight riding leggings and nodding at me.

“You look insane,” she laughed, and I looked down on the silver cocktail dress with a wink.

“I’m wearing nothing whatsoever underneath this,” I confessed and turned around so they could admire my naked back.

“Why are you doing this to the boy again?” Tova grinned, stepping into her boots.

“Because – one day – he’ll snap and then…oh…” I grinned lasciviously, imagining another occurrence of his stormy, passionate kisses that drove me to the edge of insanity.

“To seduction then, to hot, raw power between our thighs,” Lo chuckled, grabbed her gear, and unlocked the door.

“To making them feel beautiful and loved,” Tova nodded.

“To the hope that none of them will die in an unfortunate accident,” I laughed and, with that, we were out the door.

Note

Is it possible to have a fictotype from a show within a show? Asking for a me. There's a show within a show in a TV series and my memories don't match up with the actors, they match up with the character the character who is an actor is playing. Also I'm 22 now and I've had these memories and shifts since I was 10, so I'm very sure I was from the show the characters who are actors act in. (My apologies if this is worded poorly. It's hard to write this clearly.)

I really do need to make an FAQ, purely so I can have the first entry be "Is it possible to be kin with -" "Yes." (Not mad, just forever laughing about how often I get variations on this question.)

As I've said time and again, and will say once more: it is, at least in theory, possible to be 'kin with anything. In practice that doesn't always precisely shake out - we're all familiar with the factkin debate, and it's pretty rare to find certain kintypes (objectkin and conceptkin in particular) because it's pretty hard for most people to even imagine what being those things in any literal capacity would be like - but if you're asking me whether it's possible to experience something you're experiencing, you're giving me way more power than I actually have. I am not the arbiter of what identities are real or false. (Seriously - like, y'all understand I'm just a random dragon on the internet, right? xD)

So yeah - if you experience being this extremely meta character, then who am I to tell you you're wrong about your own identity?

Killjoys sorting

With the help of @starry-sky-stuff here are the sortings of most of the characters of the TV show Killjoys. Warning: SPOILERS ahead

Yalena "Dutch" Yardeen is probably the most Snake Lion protagonsit I've seen in a while now. She only really cares about her people who at the begining of the show are Johnny, then D'avin and despite what Dutch would like, Khlyen. Over the next five seasons, Dutch's circle grows as she adds new people, but she's still very much a Snake. The best example of Dutch's Snake primary is the season 1 episode where everyone is hunting for her mentor, Big Joe, and despite the fact that he's guilty Dutch tries to do anything to save him.

As a result of Khlyen's harsh upbringing, Dutch has almost all the secondary models drilled into her. But she's a Lion through and through: her first instinct is always to tackle the problem head on. She and D'avin bond over training and shooting things. Not to mention, when Johnny leaves the team, we have a hilarious moment when Dutch and D'avin have to deal with a teoublesome computer. Their solution: shoot it and fry it xDD

D'avin Jaqobis is definitely a Lion secondary. He's a soldier who like Dutch always goes for the direct approach. Like I previously said, he and Dutch bond because they share a secondary. His primary was harder, but I think he is a Badger. This is a very Loyalist verse and D'avin is no exception. Out of the entire trio, D'avin is the one most excited by the idea of Team Awesome Force. He is also the one put in charge of the war against the Hullen at the end of season 3 because of his leadership qualities. I would also add that his way of parenting Jaq (letting him choose his own name, always making sure he knows he is loved) seems very Badger-ish.

Johnny Jaqobis is probably the nicest Snake primary out there. This guy bonds with literally everyone that he spends more than five minutes with. But he's not a Badger, as he has very clear priorities ie. in season 1 when he thinks he'd have to choose between Dutch and D'avin, he knows he would choose Dutch even if it makes him a bad brother. Or at the end of season 3 when Dutch thinks she would die, she didn't tell Johnny because she thought he won't be able to handle it. He also bonds with individuals, not groups.

Johnny is a Bird secondary with a Snake model for fun undercover stuff and a Badger model he developed after his brother left home and he isn't not particulary fond of ("I am tired of being the one who always fixing things"). But the Bird is genuine: he is the nerd, the computer guy, the one with a plan.

Khlyen Kin Rit is Johnny's mirror in every way, the devil on Dutch's shoulder while Johnny is the angel. And it shows even in their sortings as both are Snake Birds. Khlyen's People are Aneela and then Dutch, nobody else. Everything he does, he does for them. The show doesn't excuse his abuse of Dutch at all, but it's clear Khlyen's acted that way because he thought training Dutch as brutally as he did would be the only way to ensure her survival. As a Bird secondsry, Khlyen is always the guy who has a plan, knowledge that others desperately want. As the other Yalena tells hin: "Even on a bad day, you are ten steps ahead of everyone else".

Pawter Simms who is "Qreshy born, but Westerly made" is a Badger primary whose community is Westerly and she gives up her life for it. Despite her own confession that she is no do gooder, but an exiled addict, Pawter bonds so much with the people of Old Town that she stays behind to help them after a bombing. And when she becomes one of The Nine, her first priority is still Westerly. I would say she is a Lion secondary with a Bird model for her job as a doctor. Just like Dutch and D'avin, Pawter keeps going even when she hits walls everwhere in her path and rarely tries to reconsider her methods.

Aneela Kin Rit is literally another version of Dutch, one who grew up differently, so it shouldn't be surprising that they houseshare. The way Aneela Darth Vaders her ship in season 3 screams of a burned Snake primary who weaponized her burning. During the last seasons she unburns for Kendry and Jaq. As most of the cast Aneela runs straight into obstacles and as a Hullen, she has no problem obliterating everyone that stands in her way. Classic Lion secondary.

Delle Seyah Kendry is a Snake secondary who really has fun manipulating people and playing with them when she has the upper end. In s3, when she is at Aneela's mercy the playfulness is replaced by the more pragmatic need to stay alive and she proves she is just as capable at holding soft power as she is with hard power. I initially had her pegged as a Snake primary who had no people before Aneela and Jaq. Keeley however conviced me she's probably a Bird primary that gets the Eleanor Shellstrop arc of having a very nihilistic system replaced by one with more Snake values (this is a veery Snake verse). She is the character that most cares about politics and the bigger picture. Not to mention, there is an inherit disdain in the first 2 seasons towards loyalists like Pawter and Dutch.

Jaq Kin Rit is for sure a Snake primary who puts his family first. His secondary is harder to point, considering he is still a kid who is still new to the world, but going purely on instinct I would say Badger secondary.

The Lady is probably another Snake primary considering her entire season 5 quest is to be loved by someone; be it either her future hatchlings or, in a cruel twist of faith, Khlyen. Maybe a Bird secondary? She is good at planning.

Lucy - the ship's AI- is an Exploded Snake with Johnny as her person. You only need to watch the first couple of episodes to realize Johnny is Lucy's #1 priority and will always be. Probably Bird secondary as is typical of AIs.

Zephyr Vos gave Keely Hermione Granger vibes and no wonder: the woman is a brilliant scientist, always needs to be right, is at her best when she trusts her instincts (see s5 where she was the first one to realize something was wrong in their idyllic world) and left her family because they forbade her to practice science. I think it's fair to say she is a Lion Bird.

Alvis Akary is a Bird Badger whose truth is his religion and who manages to get out of trouble with the help of friends like Dutch or his Scarback community.

Primma Dezz left his life as a warlord and framed his death because he realized his boyfriend would be a better leader than him. I think it's safe to say he is not a Snake. But considering the way he cares about the people of Old Town, he is a Loyalist. Most likely a Double Badger as his bar is a way to connect people and he is often the one to raise the spirits or the patriotic feelings in the people of Westerly. It's very sweet to see a Double Badger who uses patriotism for good.

Turin is probably a Badger whose community is the RAC. Lion secondsry as these are the kind of people mostly drawn to the Killjoys business.

Gared's a Snake Lion with Pree as his person and more courage than wits.

Fancy Lee "cleans, cooks, builds stuff", making him a Bird secondary. Considering his arc to help the cleansed Hullens, I could easily see him as a Badger primary who had no community before.

S5 Ep 3: Apdnarg is Really Hard to Spell

Yo guys, people are getting vaccinated, the sun is parting through the clouds, and I felt so nice that I even stopped listening to quite so many throwback 00′s BTS mashups (and yet I keep clicking on these dissonant catastrophes thinking “this time it’s got to be better. This time they’ll figure it out.” and like, no. Turns out you can’t match Brittany’s Toxic with BTS’ Black Swan. You can’t do that.)

This must be a sign that things are getting better. If anything, it means my personal tastes are improving. I mean I only clicked on like 3 “Dark Academia” Playlists where I could pretend I’m some sort of spooky witch in an abandoned library with a bad music player and basic taste in classical music (like can we ban Satie from Youtube for a little while?). Hell, I might even do a prompt update to this blog!

Yeah, you heard me, I’m actually going to stay ahead of the update schedule for Yugioh Abridged (maybe. I haven’t actually watched cuz of spoilers, I just noticed the thumbnail pop up on Youtube and was like “Damn it, they came out of hiatus??? I got hurry UP.”)

Anyway, speaking of the sky parting.

I’ll have you know my bro said this is actually more like a circumcision and it was one of the worst thing I have ever heard.

We get a chance to take in this lineup of confusing and varied character designs, and Joey. who is...still Joey.

The animators probably had to hold a strike in order for them to put Yugi in the audience, lets be real. There are TOO MANY PEOPLE in this shot and one is wearing a turban where you draw every single wrap. I hope those artists charged by the line.

Tea has a subplot where she’s just very frustrated with everyone she knows. They have been traveling together for like many weeks and got trapped in a foreign country so I get it. But at the same time, it’s kind of hard to picture Tea with female friends.

Because right now you got this 12 year old child, the other duelist who does not care about anything besides cards, and Kaiba’s 3 dragon cards that we’ve all collectively decided are female.

Hell it’s almost like the writers are asking themselves why Tea is here. Maybe they forgot. There’s no more ghosts to bus, no more people to knock out with her ass with random Olympic feats. Tea’s just sidelining.

Mokuba is a itty bit bit taller this season, and so I guess that means he can legally climb on top of the cherry picker in order to give a riveting speech.

Really says a lot about Mokuba that he is so unphased about talking to, I dunno...an entire planet of people. Kind of a shame we never see this courage from Mokuba used for anything other than talking really, really big and giving everyone around him a really hard time.

Mokuba takes a moment to dunk on Yugi Muto, as is Kaiba tradition.

And then introduce the first pair of duelists, which obviously must be between the few people in this tournament that we actually know and care about.

Thankfully, in between last episode and this episode, Yugi has figured out who his own Grandpa is. This is a relief, because Yugi is such a mess, that I was fully convinced it would take over half a season for him to recognize it. I mean how long did it take him to figure out he shares a body with a ghost? Like half a season?

Instead Yugi recovered gracefully from not recognizing his grandpa, but it’s not like he bothered to tell anyone else, so the rest of our cast is just gonna be like “Is he my hairdresser? The guy who delivers my mail? Who is this guy who made absolutely no significant changes to his outfit or voice?”

Like sometimes this show goes full Spongebob silly kid’s show and you never know when to take it seriously or not. They might be sacrificing the entire cast next episode. I really don’t know. But for now their big concern is who is grandpa??? Like an innocent card version of “Are you my Mother?”

Faced with public speaking, Yugi decides to have a melt down.

We have seen him face monsters, we’ve seen him on TV dozens of times, he’s been in multiple competitions...but give a speech? Of course he can’t do that. The kid doesn’t attend enough school to know how to do that. Them’s learning skills.

And that was when a newly assembled wife-jet spliced through the sky like a souped up razer scooter and deposited 1 fully equipped Seto Kaiba in a Buzz Lightyear jetsuit.

THE RECOVERY.

Seto always watching over his Brother, ready to save this awkward party if it kills him (and it really should, that suit is held together by two seat-belts), making sure to get on that platform before Yugi starts going off about how he’s half an Ancient Egyptian. (Ah, life before social media. You could just be hella famous and also half a dead dude and people would just not know. I kinda miss the time before I knew literally everything about everyone.)

Please admire how close those flames are to setting Mokuba’s heavily hairsprayed mane completely alight. It would be an unforgettable spectacle.

These were absolutely just random ass jet packs that Gozaburo Kaiba made to kill hell tons of people, right? Like Seto found it in the family cabin, clutched to the heart of some crispy fried corpse and was like “neat! Mokuba! I found a cool toy!” and just plucked that thing out of that skeleton’s clutches and has been flying around for months?

Like this is Seto Kaiba’s Butter Glider, right?

Which I’m only even thinking about because I’ve had to try and make an appt with the DMV for days to get a freakin REAL ID. I went to sleep in 2019 and I could fly on a plane. I woke up in 2021 and it’s like “Want one last screw you?” and just...can 2020 please stop screwing me over? It’s March.

Anyway, the Jet is removed soon after, so no, this is not part of his new outfit. He goes right back to his Post-S4-Trauma-Normcore.

After wrestling this competition out of his brother’s hands and confusing everyone in the audience, Roland must have gotten the memo to cut the microphone before Seto got too excited and we were quickly ushered on to the next stage of the tournament.

One sec...the BTS Mashup playlist I just clicked on did a Black Swan X 7 rings mashup and it’s the worst thing my ears have ever heard.

Holy crap. I had to actually turn down my volume. Like...Ariana Grande already has music that has way too many overlapping singing parts on it--and then lets just stick a 52-person boy band on top? That’ll fix it. Yeah. Go ahead.

Wow. Even I had to change the song and you know how much I enjoy pop culture mistakes.

Yep. That’s my grocery shopping outfit. Except maybe not a lab coat and a duel disk. Wish I had a duel disk, that would make social distancing just a hell ton earlier. Just a “Yo, only one person in checkout, please” and then bap them on the head with a propelled discuss/hologram.

Anyway, Grocery shopping/Doctor man dueled the Purple Hair Boy, and considering that Purple Hair got screen time and shook Yugi’s hand once--I think that Doctor man doesn’t stand a freakin chance.

Good. I hate him.

Also, every time he breathes he’s gonna fog up his glasses. I have experience in this area. He can’t read his own cards in the same way I can’t read my phone if I’m in the refrigerated aisle.

So the way this tournament works, is everyone has to sit in the stadium to watch the show. Kinda like showing up to a football stadium just to watch a recorded TV monitor...but then again...that is how it feels to watch a football game at a football stadium when it’s live (at least with the tickets I usually get.)

And as we watch Grandpa waiting for his competitor, we find out that his competitor (Joey) is too busy eating snacks to give him the time of day.

Why do cartoon hot dogs always have lettuce? Is that seriously supposed to be relish? Or is there a place in the world where you put lettuce on your hot dog?

Sorry, bro has just informed of his favorite hot dog order, which is absolutely terrible so I will share it with you: a Five Guys hot dog with ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, onions, mushrooms, pickled peppers, and you guessed it--topped with freakin lettuce.

My own kin. How am I over 30 and just finding out that my baby brother thinks it’s normal to walk into a restaurant with normal god-fearing law-abiding people and order lettuce and mushrooms on a hot dog?

I have fully failed him.

The rest of this episode is watching both Joey Wheeler and Mokuba have a shared panic attack while Seto does freakin nothing.

Please remember that Seto has both a jetpack and a dragon wife plane and could have easily solved this problem. But nah.

Then again, Seto Kaiba has given this crew so MANY rides, that maybe he’s tired of being the Soccer Mom for the team?

Like they don’t actually say this episode, but Seto was the one in charge of like...this entire place, do you think he made the 2 for 1 special just to get Joey where it hurts the most? Or does it actually not take any subterfuge to screw Joey Wheeler because he’s just naturally this way?

Like Mokuba wasn’t there when Joey was told “stay right here, and then we will all go together to fight Dartz” and Joey was like “I’mma save Mai from herself although she told me not to!” and then he Hella Died. But, Mokuba did see the result, AKA, Joey’s dead body being carried on the back of Tristan. Maybe Mokuba never realized that Joey died because he went out of his way to be late?

Lets do a tally of every time I can recall with my dodgy memory that Joey was threatened to be DQ’d/pretty much was DQ’d either by his own fault or no fault of his own

-When he wasn’t allowed to go on the boat to Murder Island because he was a stupid nobody kid who did not have a dueling glove

-When he wasn’t actually supposed to be in Pegasus’ tourney and was, in fact, secretly using half of Yugi’s entrance ticket the entire time

-when Bandit Keith stole the ticket that Joey got from Yugi so then Joey had to borrow Mai’s ticket although she had just used it so it really shouldn't have counted. Because, really anyone could have just piggy backed off of each other’s ticket until the whole boat went through that castle.

-When his account was hacked to get entered into Kaiba’s tourney when Kaiba very clearly told him he could not apply solely because he was Joey Wheeler.

-When he was late to his sister’s eye surgery because he got mugged by Marik’s Rare Hunters, so she almost refused to do the surgery.

-When Joey got possessed by Marik, and as Marik, threatened to murder everyone else in the tournament including both of the Kaiba brother’s who’s tournament it was, and then chained himself to Yugi Muto to throw both of them to the bottom of the ocean.

-I think there was a point when he threatened to attack Kaiba in Kaiba’s own tourney while not possessed? Like several times?

-when he got struck by Lightning and almost did not stand up fast enough after being struck by lightning, which is apparently a type of DQ in Duel Monsters.

-When he tried to save Mai from getting hit by a fireball, but then Yugi did it instead, and then so many people were standing on the dueling platform that Kaiba couldn’t possibly DQ them all.

-When he entered the restricted area of the blimp in order to hassle Kaiba into landing the Blimp, which Kaiba did not do.

-When Marik killed Joey before Joey could press the “go” button on his duel disk to play the card that should have won Joey the match.

-When he was dueling a lawyer in a digital universe but then the dice was like...weighted? So Noah had to walk over and be like “The hell is this weighted dice? This is my perfect digital world? How did you even do that?” and then Joey won because the match was no longer legit.

-When Joey yelled at Noah too much and so Noah turned Joey to stone for being a rude ass spectator

-When Mai was like “Wheeler and Valon, listen closely: do NOT murder each other” and then Joey did a murder on Valon so she was like “I guess I have no choice, I was very clear” and killed Joey straight up.

-When Joey decided to block Seto’s fireballs while Joey Wheeler WAS a playing card, somehow disrespecting both Dartz and Seto Kaiba at the same time.

-When Joey was playing cards but then got absorbed into a giant Leviathan and basically couldn’t play anymore after that.

-There’s probably hell ton of S0 stuff I just haven’t seen yet.

Anyway Joey fights off a bunch of hologram snakes and bats and everyone is like “Should we tell him it’s just holograms???” And it’s like wow, guys, how many times have these ‘holograms’ straight up murdered Joey Wheeler and everyone else on this cast? Too many? Because I have a google doc with so many deaths on it. 7,805,844,048, to be exact.

Anyway, he gets there with five seconds to spare and Mokuba’s like “well at least you were still entertaining while we filmed you in front of a live audience being a total spaz for 15 minutes straight, so I’ll let you go.”

Grandpa and Joey start playing, Joey completely oblivious that this is just an older Muto, while Hawkins walks up awkwardly and is like “hey guys. I’m so sorry about this.”

What’s funny about this exchange is that after they find out that Yugi’s Grandpa is Apdnarg (HOLY my brain cannot get around the spelling for that, and I will not change it in the caps. I cannot do a ‘pdn’ ever again), they don’t stand on his side of the field or anything. Hawkins is legit Solomon Muto’s only fan during this exchange and like...damn. Way not to back your Grandpa, Yugi.

Yugi immediately strides up to Mokuba to non-confrontation-ally inform him that he has stepped over a line and Mokuba is like “what are these things you say called ‘lines?’”

According to Mokuba, Solomon Muto begged him to be in the competition so he could relive his glory days (glory days making no sense here, because the game has only been released for the past 15 years, so glory days is like...the before times that can only be referring to disgraced archeologists and Pegasus ((who is, in his own way...a disgraced archeologist, too))) and Mokuba was like

“You trained Yugi Muto, right? Hey that’s good enough for me. This drama is gold. People will eat it up. Hell yes. Don’t be afraid to abduct him a little bit. Maybe trap a couple people in a digital hellscape for a little while? Now we go by Pegasus house rules here, so fire as many lasers as you want, but just make sure not to hit anyone in the face. Oh man, we are going to be swimming in cash. Love it, Muto Sr, love it.”

But I dunno, I feel like Grandpa won’t make it past next episode. It is Joey. We kinda need him to make it past Ep 4 of the arc. If Grandpa Muto becomes the new Joey Wheeler, that will be a weird transition for this show to make.

The Arcana characters during the Covid-19 pandemic: Part 1 (Asra, Julian, Valerius)

hi everyone! i felt really happy whilst writing this. in each set of headcanons, the apprentice lives with that character! i don’t specify if there’s anything romantic or sexual going on between them though. this is VERY detailed, i’m still writing out muriel, nadia, portia, and lucio’s headcanons so they’ll come in part 2 <3 i hope you enjoy!! Asra

asra hosts weekly magic workshops (covering very very basic magic) with the apprentice over microsoft teams 💻 each workshop has a small fee, with all proceeds going to local vesuvian charities like mask suppliers, and food banks (who he tries to donate extra food to every week) supporting the poorest amongst their population. it was the apprentice who first suggested he do this, on a day he was feeling really afraid in the face of the pandemic.

i think he has days when he feels really helpless and trapped – and it runs a little deeper than cabin fever and restlessness. other than the pain he’d experience if he lost the apprentice again, being unable to do things freely is the worst situation he can think of... as much as asra prioritises the apprentice’s mental health, he doesn’t practice emotional expression a lot. he truly strives to be there for the apprentice and even when he remembers how they suffered after coming back...asra only cries silently at night when they are asleep – when he knows they can’t hear him.

that’s part of the reason why he’s always seemed so mysterious in the game — growing up without his parents meant that he learnt to push down his fear and put on a brave face... and one of the reasons why he goes on trips without much explanation is to escape reality for a bit. he lets his vulnerability show only on the worst of days (like the day the apprentice died). on days where asra feels really afraid of the world and defeated, the apprentice takes over his shop duties and brews much more lapsang souchong than usual to comfort him. so much that even passerbys outside the shop are caught in the smokiness of it! unlike the red plague, every community in the world is affected, and there is nowhere for asra to escape to. this includes nopal. after vesuvia’s Covid-19 situation gets better though, he and the apprentice stay there sometimes as a mini vacation of sorts and it brings him peace 🏜

asra’s leading an effort to make high quality masks more accessible to vesuvians. in fact, that local mask provider i mentioned earlier is his initiative. he set it up after seeing people buy all the beaked plague doctor masks (the PPE of vesuvia) that actual working doctors need access to. he would never admit it but, when asra thinks about the doctors, julian is the first who comes to mind. anyways, the masks asra designs are stunning. he spends tireless nights testing their 3-ply efficacy, and they aren’t just plain blue or white – there are intricate details imprinted on them through his magic 🔮

i think asra would also be really into coming up with new herbal concoctions for customers, after he notices how tired people look from being indoors all day – for example, he’s developed an immune system-boosting drink that’s a gorgeous swirly purple colour 🍶 it’s similar to traditional chinese medicine. also he only uses ethically sourced, 100% local herbs (by local, i mean from nopal and the tarske forest, where muriel helps him collect wildflowers and herbs!!) 🌿 he uses spells to counter the toxicity of his favourite belladonna flower and it becomes a superfood staple of his concoctions

he goes out every couple of days just to gather herbs and ingredients for aforementioned concoctions, always prioritising the ones he makes for the apprentice and always making those sweeter, taking more time to create colourful depths in them that resemble galaxies. asra also makes particular effort to bring back a wide range of fruits from his local trips as it always cheers the apprentice up 🍈

asra invents the most effective, affordable, environmentally-friendly, non-toxic and skin-friendly hand sanitiser and because this magician is the sweetest person ever and cares much more about people’s lives than making a profit during the pandemic, he shares the recipe online for free & magicians all around the world recreate the hand sanitiser for their local neighbourhoods. he’s since been featured in a couple of “Top 10 People You Should Follow” lists in business magazines and there’s an online petition with over 200k signatures calling for his nobel prize nomination lol. asra insists he doesn’t care about fame but when the apprentice laughs about these recognitions, they always notice asra’s eyes crinkling

asra would also become a lot more active on his youtube channel. that’s right, he’s always had a youtube channel, he’s just had a million hiatuses because of all his adventures. he has around 20,000 subscribers (and a similar amount on instagram...his feed is colourful and full of pictures depicting his travels, the shop, and above all, the apprentice). since he’s decided to stay at the shop with the apprentice – who is actually a little more vulnerable than others to viruses, because of their “reborn” form – he has the time to post weekly videos again. i think asra wouldn’t want to show his face in any of the videos, and not on his instagram either... and it’s got nothing to do with his self-esteem – he just wants the focus to be on what he’s doing rather than how he looks. the videos vary from very domestic vlogs with titles like “what two magicians do in a day” to packed af guides like “🐍 SPELLS TO REFINE AT HOME 🐍” & “crystals that can calm you during these times” and his wildly popular “carving crystals i mined: in real time” ⏳ the apprentice is a permanent fixture in all of them <3 viewers always assume they’re together and whether they are or not...that’s for you to think about ;)

asra is big on healing crystals and gemstones. like really, really big on them. he always makes sure to inform his customers and audiences that they are alternatives and not substitutes, and that sicknesses need real medicine & they can’t just wear a crystal in place of a mask (bc that’s happened before and he felt so guilty for carving and selling the crystal in question) what’s strange is, even though he usually sources his crystals from other countries during his travels, there seem to more than ever all around the shop and the apartment upstairs..

when the apprentice asks about it, it turns out that asra goes mining alone in nopal! he doesn’t really like to mine the actual desert as he’s only ever dug up gold and silver there. one time, he accidentally stumbled upon a cave at the edge of nopal and – ever the curious wandering magician – he ventured deep within it and found amazing crystals and gemstones everywhere 💎 he never mentioned it to the apprentice because he always thought it was too dangerous for them to go, until they remind him it’s dangerous for him too. from that day onwards they go looking for crystals every weekend together :’)

if asra was living alone, he would be fine with just wearing a mask to go outside. but since he lives with the apprentice – and especially after what happened during the red plague – he’s not risking ANYTHING. he wears aviator goggles and eco-vinyl gloves when he’s in the market, just to be extra safe, though when he’s out foraging he takes off his mask because there’s usually no one else there & it’s way too humid. the apprentice likes to make fun of how steampunk he looks & the way the big goggles make his hair extra poofy 🤍

Julian

julian is on the frontlines of the vesuvian pandemic response. with his experience as a doctor – specifically, a frontline doctor during the red plague who discovered the cure (!!!) – he is revered by new doctors and nurses, most of whom are volunteers. when the pandemic first begins, there aren’t formal hospitals or medical schools set up in vesuvia, so he has to make do by reopening his clinic in the centre city, as an alternative to valdemar’s one in the palace – which, quite frankly is the stuff of nightmares for most of the population

as you know, julian is universally loved by the vesuvian people... so the waiting list of the hospital branch he works at is ALWAYS full. patients always report how gentle and attentive he is and how comforted they feel in his presence. even though he has to wear a hazmat suit and the plague doctor beak mask, he is known for visiting the most severely affect Covid-19 patients and holding their hands in their last moments.

the apprentice brings different flowers to put inside his beak mask every day (this is a headcanon that i’m pretty sure originated from the writer telanaris on AO3!!) to give julian some small comfort amongst all the death and suffering he’s witness to every day. they go out to the tarske forest or even to nopal with asra, or sometimes alone. because julian mentioned wolfsbane was his favourite flower once, the apprentice picked some without knowing that they’re poisonous. long story short, they blacked out and woke up in his clinic with an extremely worried julian nearly in tears launching into a self-blame monologue, about to black out himself from staying by their side the whole night

i also think julian would be featured in the news a lot and sometimes pretty randomly. he gives official weekly Covid-19 updates on the main vesuvian tv news channel – though the apprentice stands in for him after the first two weeks (he tries very hard to refuse their help because he doesn’t want to burden them, even though they assure him they actually want to relieve him of at least one of his burdens since he’s a full-time pandemic doctor – and because he almost fainted from exhaustion the second time. the apprentice kindly, but sternly asks him to take care of himself too, as he does everyone else)

he would just be on the news in general too...his random acts of kindness would go viral on social media – “Vesuvian Doctor Helps Elderly In Race for Toilet Paper.” ❤️ “Local Doctor Delivers Groceries for Struggling Families.” and his “grandmothers” in nevivon always get excited when they see him on the news and send letters to congratulate him (much to his embarrassment). julian would also go viral on twitter. one photo of him has 100k retweets: “oh my fcking god i just rounded the corner and there’s this really fucking t a l l man handing out free bottles of sanitiser. i don’t need to see him under his plague beak to know he’s hot af HELP” and the apprentice would retweet it saying “so proud of my bf” and the internet would go wild over this comment. it’s up to you to decide if they’re actually together or not hehe bc who knows the apprentice might’ve meant best friend 🤷🏻‍♀️

he sets up a youtube channel with no profile picture or description to upload a single video... “How to PROPERLY use hand sanitiser!” and all the comments are just about his looks and voice 😚 it reaches cities outside of vesuvia and because the hand sanitiser in the video is locally made (by asra!) it quickly becomes sold out by either those who don’t know how to do magic or people without access to the products being replicated by other magicians... because a lot of them actually marked up the price :( + even communities that are afraid of magic buy it because asra’s detailed method and julian’s instructive marketing combined are that effective. a power couple... in another life, perhaps 💫

julian would then be invited to do a city-sponsored video guide on how to wash your hands (the idea is helmed by nadia, of course, who recognises the usefulness of his newfound fame). not only would he be extremely exhausted from full-day shifts, he’d also be overthinking to the point of hyperventilation before filming starts – but he surprises the apprentice with how professional and clear he is in the videos. a true thespian at heart, instead of happy birthday, he improvises on set and sings an old tune from nevivon instead as he washes his hands for 20 seconds 🌊 lemme just say...his hands also go viral lol. also, julian could be a tik tok star if he wanted to. he’s certainly got the moves for it, and can easily achieve the e-boy vibe – plus, he’s gone viral on there several times already!

even though julian doesn’t seem to care when he’s in danger, he’s very meticulous when it comes to the apprentice’s safety. living through his second pandemic and working with patients first hand means that he is very aware of how severe the situation is. every morning he prepares a 99:1 water:bleach ratio spray to spray his shoes when he comes home. he refuses to even touch the apprentice (for fear of passing on anything from the clinic) before he’s taken off his mask, thrown it away safely – then showering and washing his hair thoroughly.

having grown up in nevivon, i like to think that julian is really environmentally conscious, especially with regards to the sea. he used to go diving in the sea to retrieve trash, and as a young man he made a habit of going to the docks every weekend to remove plastic containers and wires from around the necks of salt seals 🌫. so, no matter how tired he is, when he comes home to the apprentice, julian never forgets to snip the ear loops of his surgical masks in half, as he knows sea creatures can get caught up in them. i’m sure he makes a second youtube video at some point to talk about this issue. tldr julian is an environmental activist <3

Valerius

so it’s been a long while since valerius was freed from you-know-who. his personality has definitely changed a lot since then... he’s back to his old and real self (which we never really saw in the game) 🌄 he works side by side with nadia now, not only as colleagues but also genuine friends, and he oversees the health department. he sets up dozens of hospitals and more general clinics in and out of vesuvia, consulting experienced doctors in vesuvia like julian as well as officials from neighbouring countries and states. as a side note, valerius is actually a very humble person and the most attentive listener you will ever meet. people from neighbouring governments & royal households admire him immensely as a result <3

out of everyone, i think valerius would be the most careful during the pandemic. during the red plague he witnessed lucio’s illness up close and it’s had a profound impact on him. he worries about the apprentice, a lot. more than anyone who knows him expects him to. he’s always the first to notice and remind them if their mask is falling down their nose, or if they’re about to rub their eyes with unwashed hands. you will never catch him forgetting to wear a mask or touching his face at all when he’s outside. he takes the time to use disinfectant wipes to clean everything he brings back home one by one, and though valerius is adamant it’s not the apprentice’s responsibility (because most of the things are usually files from the palace he has to go through before the next morning or things he brings back from the market) the apprentice always insists they want to help out :’) so it becomes a nice daily evening ritual, sitting together on the floor after returning from the palace, cleaning their things in silence together 💜

speaking of things he buys, valerius loves the marketplace. he discovers it one day by accident when looking for a bouquet of 🌹 red roses 🌹 to bring back for the apprentice, who was particularly upset that day after helping valerius out at the new hospitals and not being able to help any of the patients as much as they would have liked with their magic. when valerius stumbles across the marketplace, he is absolutely amazed by the colours and smells that surround him. he spends a lot of his free time and lunch hours looking through jewellery stalls – especially hairpins and hair sticks.

anyone looking at him would be able to see how much care valerius puts into maintaining his hair. because he washes his hair every day (to avoid bringing any Covid-19 related germs into bed), and because being free from you-know-who has made him a lot more open to magic... not to mention because he actually lives with the apprentice now 💜 i think valerius would also consult asra about magical hair masks and conditioners, to keep his very long and thick hair healthy and soft, despite washing it every day.

he knows from accidentally overhearing asra a long time ago that the apprentice loves pumpkin bread, so he asks around for hours until he finally finds the baker’s stall 🍞 it takes hours because valerius is really bad with directions and gets lost a few times... it doesn’t help that he’s distracted by all the different foods and jewellery that he’s never seen before (he picks up a nice ring for the apprentice, and yes he’s so attentive and familiar with jewellery that he guesses their ring band size correctly). from that day onwards, once or twice a week, he wakes up a little earlier than usual to sneak out of his estate and buy the bread, so that the apprentice can enjoy it – freshly made, warm, and their favourite – for breakfast 🥣

yes, he has an estate (this mr. darcy-like headcanon is from jane_ways on AO3!!) and he treats his household employees very well, offering paid leave for all of them so that they can stay with their own families. in their absence, he proves to be an incredible cook, albeit a little rusty because he hasn’t cooked anything substantial since being under you-know-who’s influence and because he’s been too busy at the palace to eat anything that isn’t catered.

due to social distancing, the apprentice and him eat in a lot more – valerius is very ambitious and soon moves past making homemade dishes... he cooks blown out, elaborate dinners and prepares creative and (visually) beautiful packed lunches to bring to work 🍴 whenever the apprentice has to work late he brings them dinners inspired by the colours of the shop that day – he is hesitant to admit it, at first, but he’s always admired the crystals there, and he is often inspired by them in his food presentations. asra is ever perceptive and gifts him a few (polished amethyst because he used to be an insomniac, black tourmaline and selenite to keep you-know-who at bay 💎) soon after the apprentice frees him from the curse

i really see valerius as someone who against all expectations is really into hands-on work like welding and carving – things that can get messy. he’s slowly trying to get rid of it, but since he first started working at the palace he’s maintained a very prim and posh appearance. he really loves to weld jewellery like rings and earrings. before the pandemic began, he took a few classes in the marketplace – classes which are on hiatus now, of course. he's set up a little studio in his estate and wears a blacksmith’s apron and goggles and everything. it’s honestly quite the sight. whenever the apprentice is working longer hours at the shop making potions with asra, he goes into the studio to continue his projects. some of the ones he’s proudest of are: the pure-silver wine rack, the gold headbands and rings he makes for himself – and then for the apprentice too when they keep “borrowing” his – and his favourite of all is his first ever project: the cast iron skillet that took him over a week to weld. he hand engraved the apprentice and his initials onto its handle <3 you don't need to read any of this as a romantic gesture, because friends can definitely do the same!

i like to think that prakra managed the pandemic especially well, and that valerius sits down to have zoom calls with queen nasrin to discuss ways the two places can collaborate and help each other 👑 she becomes his mentor of sorts, as he’s still relatively young and inexperienced when it comes to governing a city-state like vesuvia. when nasrin visited nadia before at the palace, she was not a fan of valerius at all and was just as wary of him as nadia was. however she becomes very fond of him as a result of their collaboration, and even starts to see him as a son ❕ other than the apprentice, nasrin would be the second person valerius talks the most freely with. initially he is very reluctant to share anything about his life, let alone his past before landing the consul job – but he eventually opens up and nasrin plays a role in helping him move past his failures (his eyes are opened after the apprentice frees him, and he feels immense shame from how he didn’t lead vesuvia very successfully in nadia’s absence)
