merlin but after the merlin-morgana-arthur flower scene where arthur got all jealous, merlin makes sure to give a flower to arthur every time he goes to get herbs

just like

arthur teasingly asking merlin if any one of those flowers are for him when he sees merlin with a bag full not at all expecting merlin to just smile at him and take out a flower and give it to him

sometimes merlin will put it in a vase 

sometimes he’ll give it to arthur when he wakes him up

he once put it into his chainmail 

there’s one scene where the sun is shining on arthur’s hair and merlin thinks that the flower in his hand would look really pretty on arthur so he tucks it behind his ear

its such a habit its not uncommon to see merlin dragging himself into arthur’s chambers at night just to give him a flower because he went on his herb run at night

anyway

the first few times arthur thinks merlin’s making fun of him but like merlin never laughs or smirks he just shoots arthur a smile and continues on as if its normal for manservants to give flowers to the prince

and then one day he’s like “oh shit im being courted thats what this means” and he’d probably kill himself before admitting it but he finds merlin’s strange attempt at courting adorable so he starts making it clear to merlin that he likes him too and wants to be with merlin forever if merlin lets him

and honestly merlin does not know why arthur is suddenly holding his hand or kissing his cheek or telling him he has pretty eyes or acting like theyre lovers but he’s also not complaining

look I'm not a proponent of organised religion but I think it is important to remember that as we (as individuals and as a society) move away from mass religion, there are roles that religion has played in our lives that are important need replacing.

no need for prayer, but it's important to find time in your day for reflection or meditation. no need to confess your sins, but you do need someone you can admit your problems and secrets to. no need for scripture or doctrine, but it will make your life easier if you have a (flexible!) set of personal values to live by. no need to go to church and meet with the congregation, but having a (preferably local) community and a block of time every week or so reserved for gatherings will keep you sane and grounded.

so many treatments offered up for mental health - from mindfulness to talking therapy to gratitude journals to Groups of all kinds - are intended to fulfil the higher emotional needs that religion (for all its MANY flaws and often in a VERY fucked up and unhealthy way) covered. I'm not saying be religious, but I AM saying that if you're not, it might be a bad idea to let that niche get filled in with more work and media consumption instead of self-reflection and community connection. Not believing in a higher power doesn't exempt you from these needs.
