A New Wave of Maribat

So, there has been talk for some time about how Maribat as a fandom is dying, or at least, people within the fandom can feel that it is not as lively as it could be.

Pondering the question, what if, a rather peculiar idea arrived. There are plenty of places on Tumblr with blogs dedicated to Maribat. Ao3 is a rather popular for content as well. However, is there not another place that people frequent quite often that could give the fandom new attention?

The answer is simple. Instagram

Now, you might be saying, "seriously? Instagram? No one goes on Instagram for Maribat."

That is exactly the point. Tumblr takeovers can be effective and gain attention, that's for sure, but why not try a different route? Instagram is a place where people share irl things yet within it is an incredible world of artists and storytellers.

Instagram could provide what the Maribat needs. A new light. People could discover this fandom for the first time in a place no one would expect.

Below is going to be information about this page for those that are intrigued by this idea, it will also allow those who do not wish to hear more the ability to continue on their scrolling.

There are a couple ways to bring Maribat to Instagram and Maribat Media is here to help with it.

Creators can either make their own Instagrams or use their existing ones to post content. Any sort of Maribat content is amazing. Get it out there for the world to see.

Understandably, not everyone is going to want to make an account or post on Instagram. Why go through the effort if you don't use the platform. Valid.

Maribat Media is here to help. We encourage people to help promote others' works across platform to get them the attention they deserve. Any piece of artwork, writing or art form, takes a lot of time and energy. @ this account in the replies of a piece shared here on tumblr and we will get in shared, only under the following conditions.

This needs to be made absurdly clear. Maribat Media will not cross post a piece of content solely by being tagged. When tagged, the creator of the post will be reached out to see if they would like their piece to be shown off on the Instagram. No means no and the creator will not be pressured to allow their piece to be published. That is rude and the exact opposite of what the admin hope to accomplish.

The best thing to do if you want a post to be placed on the Instagram is ask the creator themselves within a reply to their piece about if Maribat Media can post it. It saves all parties time, and you can easily @ this account when the creator's written permission is present.

That also goes for creators themselves! If you have a post you want to have put on Instagram but do not have an account yourself, @ Maribat Media with a request to and the admin will gladly see to it!

Events can also be requested for sharing! It is highly encouraged to have event runners who want their events to be seen to either @ or leave a request. Events are an amazing way to gain traction.

Any and All sorts of content that have been given permission to post with have proper crediting. Within the top of the description and in an extra slide of the post (unless there is not a slide available).

Ask Me Anything is always open for any questions surrounding this whole Instagram thing as well the comments to this very post. You can leave requests for content sharing in the AMA (the process will be the same as if @'d in a reply).

Finally, this is all one big attempt at trying something new. There is no knowing if this will work at all. However, there is no harm in trying. Perhaps we can give this fandom new light together.

DAMIAN AL GHUL HAD been taught from day one positive emotions would be his doom. Well, that, and the several ways to kill or cause severe bodily harm to someone. He knew torture methods and the best way to blackmail someone. He knew he was the heir to the greatest guild of assassins. 

His world turned upside down when he was ten. That was when Deathstroke and his band of traitors attacked the League, forcing his mother to flee with him in tow. Shove him under the care of a father who had no idea he existed. The only thing Damian knew was how to attack, how to make sure he was safe. He didn't know how to care. He didn't know how to love, like his elder adopted brother, Dick, loved unconditionally. 

You cannot let your emotions control you, Damian. His mother had told him one time, while he was sparring with another child of the League. This person's only use is to die for you. You cannot feel anything. 

Damian had learned everything from a to z. Except the art of caring. The League of Shadows had no room for emotions. The League certainly didn't need sentimental and emotional messes. Damian supposed that was why his mother had drugged his father in order to conceive him. 

Talia al Ghul was his mother in biological terms only. Damian al Ghul didn't grow up expecting love, nor did he give it so easily. And neither did Talia. It didn't really matter, because Damian wasn't an expert in love. He didn't need his mother's love to survive. And if Talia in any way wanted Damian to love her like typical mother and sons do, she had no-one to blame but herself. 

Bruce Wayne was his father, but with vastly different backgrounds, Damian and Bruce didn't connect easily. The same could be said for any of his adopted siblings. Though they'd all been through traumatic stuff, nearly none of them understood growing up and being raised by assasins. Except for Cass, who could understand his past better than the rest of his family. 

Damian al Ghul was not Damian Wayne. Though yes, Damian Wayne had the same chararistics, physical features, and overall knowledge, Damian Wayne had one thing Damian al Ghul never had. A family. Though dysfunctional and chaotic, the Waynes were a family nontheless. Damian al Ghul was cold, heartless and ruthless. But Damian Wayne had a chance to live.

 MANON CHAMACK HAD GROWN up knowing that negative emotions would get her killed. From the age six, Manon had grown up with the reality of Hawk Moth and Akumas being completely normal. That was absolute hell. But if she allowed herself to feel angry or annoyed, then she would have no control over what would happen next. She wasn't powerful enough to resist Hawk Moth. Nobody was. Eventually they all succumbed to the power and the promising words, the lies, of Hawk Moth. 

Manon was suffocating. Drowning. She tried to scream but nobody could hear her. Her terror was flooding through her veins. Get me out of here, she thought. Syren laughed maniacally, and Manon was dragged into darkness. 

Most of Paris were able to trauma block Akuma attacks. But Manon? Manon couldn't ever unsee what she did. She could recall any of her deaths perfectly. She could recall the deaths of her friends, when August had jumped in front of a strike aimed at her, when Ella and Etta were too a moment too slow, when Chris had been torn apart, blood spraying on her. 

Manon lived by a code. 1) Do not feel, 2) Should rule one fail, then everyone is fucked.

It was as simple as that. 

But it wasn't. Because humanity did not function without emotion. With Hawk Moth taking away Paris' fundamental link to humanity, it was impossible to survive or thrive. Paris's humanity relied on two teenagers to save them, teenagers who'd been thrust into the position without any forewarning or preperation. Not to say that Ladybug and Chat Noir didn't do a kickass job, but they just weren't meant to fight an emotional terrorist. 

Manon lost any ability to feel during the reign of Hawk Moth, and even after Hawk Moth, some days she just wanted to stay in bed and never get out. Manon Chamack never had any chance to live, but she was a survivor. She fought, and she stood strong at the end. 

But truly living was a foreign idea to her. What did it even mean? How could she live when she was vitally broken?

🖤 Proportion of Crossover fics

At the time of posting, Crossover Fics accounted for 13% of the total fanfics on Ao3 (9177 works) (Fig 1A). They were predominantly featured in Batman All Media Types (5097 works) or DCU (1034 works), accounting for 68% of all crossover fics (Fig 1D). The majority of the works were rated for General (39%) or Teen Audiences (39%) (Fig 1B).

Excluding works from the MariBat fandom, the second highest number of works to be crossovered with ML was Boko No Hero Academia with 348 works (3%) and is also the fastest growing crossover fandom, almost doubling in works in 2023 (141 new works) (Fig 1C-D).

Data was filtered by the date the fic was last posted, between 01 Jan - 31 Dec for each year.

Note that older fics may get updated, this data is only a reflection of the fandom at one moment in time. This analysis was performed 06 Jan 2024.

I'm just hoping Danny x *insert batfam members* doesn't become the next maribat

I’m not in the Miraculous Ladybug fandom or have read any crossover fics from that fandom so I’m unaware of the reputation mirabat holds or the stigma against it.

Totally unsure if the Danny x [batfam member] is talking about ships or the crossover in general but if you’re talking about in general so imma just go over all the bases.

In General, I mean yeah, there’s a bunch of fics with the batfam and Danny. He’s a black haired blue eyed child so it’s easy to just go “cool. Batfam adoption fic/twin au/sibling au.” And I’m guessing it’s a similar case for Marinette. It’s an easy trope to do and it’s really interesting when pulled off properly. Both Danny and Marinette are also already vigilantes so you don’t have to create an entire AU first before shoving them into another universe. It can be overused but if it’s broke why fix it? It’s a simple and easy concept to write and if you don’t like it you can scroll past it and ignore it.

Romantically? I really have only seen a small handful of Danny/Batfam member fics out there. Most I’ve seen are Danny/[other character/[batfam member]. I don’t mind it at all. I understand from a writing perspective that it’s fun to do the writing equivalent of taking two character figurines and smashing them together and saying “And then they kiss.” It’s not harming anyone and it’s something someone poured their heart and soul into. It’s fun to create and if you don’t enjoy it, you simply block that tag from whatever social media app you’re on or scroll past the content of that pairing and go along with the rest of your day.

Platonically? Well there’s a metric shit ton of those. I think they’re fun. Sure, there’s a lot of those and it would be nice to see more variety of various other DC heroes in the mix, but reading Batman is the main way people get into DC comics. there’s enough content about the Batfamily online that it’s easy to get a general premise of the story to read fics and know what’s going on. Adding a traumatized teenager into the mix can be fun to mess around with and the DP lore integrates with certain bits of Batman lore really well. Same as romantically, ya simply block or scroll past the posts with platonic pairings you don’t like. Sure, it can be all over and almost everywhere in the fandom, but that’s because a bunch of people enjoy it and they’re writing it for a reason. It may not be for a good reason but it’s certainly being written with intent in mind. It’s a pretty way to not deal with a crossover you don’t enjoy: Don’t Like, Don’t Read.

Again, I got not a single clue if there are any controversies in the mirabat fandom. If there is a prevalent issue in the crossover, anyone is free to explain to me what’s going on with it in asks or DM because now I’m curious.

Hey Goggles, as someone who likes Maribat fics but isn't super invested in DC, how should I get into the batman and DC community? Which comic should I read, which shows or films should I watch, ect. I mean, my main knowledge of DC pre-Maribat was general public knowledge + my dad.

The DC community is huge! As is Batman so I understand not wanting to jump into the deep end and honestly that's not something I recommend. For Batman, it really depends because Batman is one of those things that has a lot of branches. Not just in terms of comics, live-action and animated, but in terms of all his kids too because they add on to him and his legacy in my opinion.

But strictly speaking Batman if you're wanting to get into live-action I say sample them all as each live-action is different than the other. Adam West is great for the more comedic Batman. Keaton is a great Bruce and Batman in my opinion and will always have a special place in my heart because his Batman has the Prince soundtrack. Val Kilmer was an okay Batman but to be honest I don't really care for him as an actor so I didn't really care for him as Bruce Wayne nor Batman. George Clooney is another Batman movie near and dear to my heart he plays a great Batman and Bruce in my opinion and the movie feels very much like a comic book, I know people have mixed feelings about it but it's a favorite. Bale was a good Batman and Bruce but his Bruce sometimes just left you wanting. Affleck was an okay Bruce but I did not care for his Batman. David Mazouz was a great Bruce Wayne! I know some people didn't care for Gotham but I thought it was a fun retelling of the Batman story, it had it's faults but Mazouz as Bruce was brilliant and if he took on the role again as well as Batman when he's older I truly believe he'd be wonderful. Pattinson is a great Batman and Bruce Wayne in my opinion! He's Bruce and Batman in Year Two and it shows and I adore it! He hasn't gotten a handle on his playboy put-together persona yet, he's still obsessed over the passing of his parents and it's just great!

Animated, there are a lot of movies to watch and I recommend a lot of them as well as some of the TV series! Batman the Animated Series is wonderful as is Batman Beyond. Movie wise Batman Year One, The Long Halloween, Batman Under the Red Hood, and others but that's are pick and choose kinda thing as well.

Comics is where things get messy. Because there are different comics set in different Earth's. I.e. different adaptations that everyone likes or dislikes. This one is very much pick-and-choose. My favorite comic though is The Long Halloween and Mad Love but that's not surprising given I'm a Harley fan.

If you want condensed but a vast set of knowledge I recommend these books!

The Batman Files by Matthew Manning, it is a bit pricey but it is a great book written by "Batman"

Batman a Visual History by Matthew K. Manning (same guy just for some reason he has his middle initial here) it goes through the ages and everything and is around 20 bucks!

For other media I've always been fond of the Batman team-ups with Scooby-Doo!

"Babe, I'm home!" Called Conner from the foyer.

Marinette dropped her notebook and hurried to meet her boyfriend, who'd just returned from a two-week space mission with the Justice League.

"Hey, babe!"

A devious smirk crossed her face as a thought ran through her mind. While Kon was gone, she'd spent a little more time than usual on social media and had seen a prank she wanted to try.

Kon crossed to the doorway she was in to kiss her, and she eagerly leaned in.

At the last second she turned her head so his lips met her cheek.

Conner frowned in puzzlement but assumed she'd gotten an itchy nose or something. He tried again when Marinette stayed still.

Her other cheek met his lips.

"Hey! It's been two weeks! I just want to kiss my girl!"

"Sorry," she giggled, not looking sorry at all, as she pursed her lips for a proper kiss to make it up to her boyfriend.

For a third time, he kissed her cheek instead of his intended target. Kon stepped back with a frown as Marinette snickered at his pout.

Sighing, he grabbed her face and pulled her into a breathless, toe-curling kiss.

He released her and immediately grabbed her waist to keep her upright as she wavered backwards, having lost her balance and breath.

"Was that good?" Her eyes sparkled with laughter and happiness.

"That was fantastic," he grumbled. "But that's how you show me you miss me after two weeks of not seeing you?"

"Of course not. I believe we have two weeks and three failed attempts' worth of kisses to catch up on?"
