Nestled on the rugged edges of northern Morocco, where the whispers of history blend with the azure embrace of the Mediterranean, stands a testament to time - an abandoned Spanish military castle. Its silent stones, caressed by the sea breeze, tell tales of bygone eras, of vigils held and battles fought. Above its weathered facade, a solitary prickly pear plant stands sentinel, a living relic of ancient times. This castle, a bridge between worlds, invites the soul to wander amidst the shadows of history, under the watchful gaze of nature. Join me on this journey through time, where every stone has a story, and the horizon stretches into eternity. 🏰🌊🌵

"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there," is the quote from a mid-20th century novel. The War of 1812 took place decades before the military funeral song "Taps" was written and popularized during the US Civil War.
Alfred Lorrain describes scores of men dying from disease at Fort Meigs in 1812-1813, which was the top killer of soldiers throughout the Napoleonic era:
They died daily. The mournful air of "Roslin Castle" became the prevailing music of the day, while the sharp rifle-cracks of the platoon told how many were borne to their long home. A deadly homesickness overwhelmed our troops, and we believe a repentance of war was kindled in every bosom, from the highest to the lowest.
— Alfred M. Lorrain, The Helm, the Sword, and the Cross.

It's a haunting melody (and new favorite song). When I was at Fort Meigs historic site earlier in the month there was also a fiddle player in period costume, which was wonderful.

The Guard Room, Stirling Castle by William Kennedy, 1887. Kennedy was part of the Scottish art movement known as the Glasgow Boys. The piece depicts one soldier of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders about to head out on guard duty while another takes a break.

Frank: So, you used to be EOD specialist at some point right?
Logan: … Yeah?
Frank, pointing at Matt who’s been giving him the silent treatment for the past 48 hours: How do I defuse that?

How easy was it for attackers to set a wooden castle on fire? Doesn't seem all that defensible long-term.
Not as easy as you might think.
Tumblr media
Keep in mind, the wooden walls of a motte-and-bailey aren't modern treated wood panels that have been treated with petroleum (this is a major reason why 5 over 1s keep burning down while under construction). They're essentially tree trunks with the bark still on them, which means they're a bit slow to light, especially when the fires in question are rather small (say from fire arrows) or don't have the best accelerants (a bundle of straw soaked in pitch would be the best you could do).
And then there's dealing with the defenders, who will be trying to kill you if you get close enough to the walls, and who will definitely try to make their castle harder to burn down by dousing any fires, soaking the wood in various liquids, covering the wood with hides, etc.

Basket-Hilted Cavalry Sword from the British Empire dated to the Mid-18th Century on display at the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
Swords of this type were purchased by the colonels of the British cavalry regiments for the use of their men. The styles of hilt varied from regiment to regiment. Basket-hilted swords became popular, not just with Scottish regiments but many cavalry regiments around Europe.
The 2nd Royal North British Dragoons were part of the War of Austrian Succession (1740 - 1748) as part of the coalition forces. They fought at the battle of Dettingen in 1743 where King George II became the last British monarch to fight in a battle. In 1745 the last Jacobite Rising took place and unlike in the last risings the regiment were left in Flanders.
