I was thinking about that one (bad, stupid) post about there being “no indication that Ed wasn’t white.” Which is ridiculous, of course, but also it is very important that Ed, in fact, isn’t white. It’s neither incidental that he’s an indigenous man but nor is it treated as Representation. We do not get Ed explicitly discussing his indigenous-ness (or proving it to the audience). Like the other queer/disabled/PoC characters, it is simply a part of who he is.
Tumblr media
But it’s not ignored. They cast a Māori woman to play his mother and a white man to play his father. They show Ed having deeply toxic relationships with angry white men. They treat of the optics of a white man buying an indigenous man from the English, of a white man resenting an indigenous man for his success and power, and of how Ed signs the act of Grace with an X as a protest against coercion. It’s IMPORTANT that Ed is not white, but it is not the only important thing about Ed.
And it’s important to his relationship with Stede and with the crew. Casting a white actor to play Ed would have created a relationship between two white captains with a supporting cast of PoC, which in itself would shift the dynamics within the show and how we read it. I recently saw a few folks note that Stede’s first interaction with Izzy would point to an enemies to lovers narrative in a different show. And this would, again, shift the dynamic of the show and its project massively by centering a romance between two white men.
(Another of the many reasons I’m deeply uncomfortable with Stizzy—it centralizes the white guys and sidelines the MoC lead. This issue also feeds into the racism of some of the weirder Izzy takes we’ve seen, because if you decide Izzy is the true protagonist then that certainly makes Ed the antagonist.)
OFMD does such a good job at representation because it treats all its characters like people. It doesn’t ignore things like racism and homophobia but neither is it a story about Overcoming Racism and Homophobia. Unlike a lot of mainstream attempts at representation, it treats not-white, not-cis, not-straight characters as human beings.

already seeing people who clearly don’t understand that a lot of us who are upset about what happened to marwa in this episode aren’t upset about the characters’ in-universe morality but the real life misogyny and racism in the way that this plot was handled lol

This is FINE
---
There's more than one reason why he's known as the 'Demon Cop'
Look this is 100% self gratifying crack. Based on my own 100% genuine experience:
I have a large tattoo, across my chest, shoulder blades and back. So, I was fairly resigned to the fact I'd probably never get to go to a public bath whilst visiting my friend in Japan, fair enough. One day however, she says she'd found a bath that allowed tattoos, and not just tiny ones that could be hidden by a plaster. So I go, very excited, and end up round the back of an area with a lot of signs advertising SoapIands and LoveHoteIs. I explain in the shakiest Japanese to the lady manning the counter that I have a large tattoo and she waves me in nonplussed. Pretty much every man there is covered in tattoos. Whilst I was drying my hair, one of them tries to ask me something but my Japanese was no where near good enough to answer. When I get back my friend seemed a little worried and then confesses that she'd found out, after I'd left, that she'd sent me to a yakuza bathhouse.
I wish I was able to understand what that man was trying to say to me.
also, the bonus aftermath:

And this is how I choose to enter 2023

As promised, hc of the day: Another thing Shadow Milk does to annoy Pure Vanilla is make random comentarys, that in his head feel like intrusive thoughts. And let me tell you, those "intrusive thoughts" are really wild. Shadow Milk: ...don't you just want to punch clotted cream in the face? Pure Vanilla: NO-
Shadow Milk: I mean he kinda reaaaaaally deserves it
Pure Vanilla: Please stop make me thinking about that
Shadow Milk: Boo, you whore

I find it odd and by odd I mean racist that ever since that stupid show cast the Dragon Twins as Black girls, there's been an uptick in Jace/Sara content/shipping.
Before the dumpster fire started, reasonable people agreed that Sara Snow was not real, but now you cannot go five minutes in Jace or Baela’s tag without seeing someone wish they'd include Sara Snow in the show.
They say it'll deepen Jace’s character and make him “interesting”, whatever that means. The problem with this assertion is that Jace is already plenty interesting, he led the war councils while his mother grieved, and he recruited the blacks' most important allies. Allies who remained steadfast even after his mother's and his own demise.
Furthermore, Jace has existing relationships in his life that the show could explore to delve into his connection with bastardy. Three of whom are canonically Black, by the way.
So, the question arises: what unique perspective or insight can Sara Snow provide to Jace's struggle with his bastard status that Nettles, Addam, and Alyn cannot?

The NERVE!!!! So, now they want Meghan who almost took her own life due to the daily racist harassment she faced from the media, to now come in and save the white girl? I think Meghan should show Kate the same courtesy she bestowed upon her!

it fucking kills me that i have seen NO ONE talking about the reaction jess jordan, kendall roy’s assistant, has. because it is jess, and rava and sophie roy, who have the reactions that twitter and reddit and all the succession lovers are looking for in shiv, for some goddamn reason. it’s jess who not so subtly pleads with greg to delay calling the election, who is blown off dismissively and ignorantly by greg who cannot understand or even SEE how strong of a panic reaction she is havjng. to him, and every other roy and tom and everyone else at their level, this is just another crazy day with literally zero consequences. a fascist dictator president will literally not change the quality of their lives as rich white people. but it will change jess’ life, as a biracial woman. it will change rava and sophie roy’s lives, in spite of kendall’s money and protection. and the show purposefully cuts off their reactions — jess blinking fast and breathing hard and about to have a panic attack meltdown in the hallway, rava and sophie scared in the back of an SUV — because the show isn’t about them. the show is about the roys, who do not care about the consequences of their actions, partially because they never have to SEE the consequences of their actions. greg does not see jess freaking out; even when she is clearly panicked in front of her he cannot see her pain and if he could, he wouldn’t care. it’s only when he turns his back on her that she starts to break down, which is a great if painful blocking choice. not only is it realistic — she can’t lose face in her workplace, she can’t react negatively when she works for the guy who owns the Devil Right Wing Fascist TV Network, and she most certainly can’t react any way people don’t like because she is one of the few, if not the only, black women in the building and working for the roys. while greg sighs and laughs about this day being crazy, she is having a meltdown as she fears what this election result means to her. if rava, a wealthy woman of color with a powerful ex husband, is scared, how much more scared is jess? is everyone else under jess?
but the show cuts off her reaction and takes us back to shiv because this show is from the roy’s pov, and this episode is largely from shiv’s pov. shiv “cares about democracy” and the country to an extent, because democracy only effects her to an extent. she knows on paper this election is bad news. she also knows it’s not going to change her life directly because she’s rich. like her brothers, who do not care at all who is President, who only care about which candidate will give them what they want, shiv is more upset because this election means she isn’t getting what she wants. she’s going to lose her power in the potential matsson deal. because that is how the roys chose who would be president: they chose the candidate they could buy and who could sell them control over their interests for the lowest number, and meincken outbid jimenez by a landslide. tldr the reaction people are looking for in shiv and in the roys were there, but in jess and rava. and even rava and jess aren’t progressives, aren’t “feminist icons”, they’re also complicit and victimized all at once, like shiv is, but with far less say and power. it’s almost like… the show about face eating leopards… is making a point that if you get in a cage with a hungry leopard, at some point you will run out of steaks to throw at it and it, too, will eat your face off. huh.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riverdale (s2e15, "There Will Be Blood") / Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom
"Cheryl is the character I've referred to as fully aware that she's living in a gothic novel, and embracing it to the hilt. This is her outfit for the reading of her father's will. Such a ludicrous show. I love it so much."
Tumblr media
Suspiria (1977) / Joan Bennett as Madame Blanc
"I doubt you'll want to watch Suspiria, the incoherent, bloody, but celebrated Italian horror film, but Joan Bennet as Madame Blanc (head of a dance academy that is also a coven of witches) has a terrific witchy black dress." (Yep, I am a self-admitted total wimp about horror.)
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) / Eva Green as Miss Peregrine
"I'm not actually certain this one is black - might be a very dark blue? Depends on lighting?" (Note: the costume looks black on my screen. Her hair, on the other hand, does seem to have a touch of blue.)

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) / Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna

Moulin Rouge (2001) / Nicole Kidman as Satine
"The 'Gothic Tower' dress."
