In the 2015 web series of DC Super Hero Girls, Harley Quinn has a pet monkey named, Calliope. With the series having Harley as a young hero in training than a villain, a cute little monkey suits her a lot better than a pair of hyenas. From what I saw and can tell from these images, Calliope is similar to Harley and that the two care about one another.

(Fun fact; Calliope was also the name of Dream's ex-wife.)

Finally got around to watching Episode 11 of The Sandman and it was good! Liked Dream of a Thousand Cats, but liked Calliope much better. Interesting parallels where Calliope asked for help where Dream wouldn't and so on but there's one thing that kind of enraged me in an episode with a lot of very upsetting subtext.

Not Calliope, I'm talking about 'Ric'. Pretentious mother fucker couldn't even be bothered to type a word without just waiting for inspiration from the heavens. 'Haven't written a word that I haven't thrown away' yeah kinda hard when you can't be bothered to write so much as 'The...' Thought you could just tap tap tap away and have a novel in a night? That's not how writing works! It's hard! It takes time! Just-

That he couldn't so much as come up with an idea. Doesn't matter if it's a good idea, start throwing words on paper. Write! Outline! World build! Something! Go 'The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog' and ask why the fox is jumping over the dog, why isn't the dog chasing the fox; anything at all! This useless lump is so caught up in his own mythos 'ooh seven publishers turned me down but I kept trying' yeah you're not special publishers turn a lot of people down. Ooooooooh it's just enraging. He doesn't even attempt to put the actual work in, he hits a stumbling block and goes running for the magic cure, and when the magic cure has a mind of her own he takes by force what exists in the world already! If he put in the work!

Like, he's not supposed to be a good person, even with all his grandstanding and 'look at the good I'm doing' and urgh, ugh. Just. It's gross.

I'll probably have more words on a rewatch, have a whole thing on The Sandman and kindness, but. Just really pissed me off to see this guy stare at a blank page for a minute, not bother to try and write anything, then go to all his self-aggrandizing media dopamine feeds. Which, was the point of it.

Dream really do be having that previously neglected shelter dog rizz and y’all be putting him in Situations 😭. Please all I can see him doing is laying pathetically on the floor letting out occasional heaving sighs of sorrow as Hob just carefully steps over him (because Dream somehow always manages to be on the floor directly under where he’s about to step and Hob’s one more tumble away from just investing in a ceiling made of monkey bars).

So now all I can imagine is Dream post-divorce with Calliope (because let’s be real that man came out of the celestial womb divorced and mopey) who finds solace in Hob’s flat and Hob’s occasional attempts to heave him up both physically and emotionally. When Hob’s not frantically almost stepping on his dear friend and braining himself as a result, he’s just sort of resigned himself to the reality that Dream just kind of…lives on his floor now when he’s not in The Dreaming, so he’s like fuck it I’m just gonna keep going about my days. So Dream gets to watch Hob’s daily routines from a brand new perspective, maybe even catch a glimpse of Hob changing in his bedroom when he forgets (read: he did not forget) to close his door, and how he sings awfully in the shower, and loves burnt toast that’s practically char and makes Dream watch terrible human shows and movies all of a sudden Dream’s like oh no I’m in love with him

I just love the idea of Dream moping around looking like a lost dog caught out in the rain for so long that Hob just accepts him as a permanent fixture in the flat. He makes some room in the closet for all of Dream’s nonexistent clothes (he buys him some anyway), he gives him a cupboard in the kitchen and a drawer or two, he gets drunk and tells Dream about all his own failed relationships over the centuries. And when Hob finally snaps and tells Dream that he’s not unloveable and proves that to him by giving him a big sloppy drunk kiss, well Dream’s always wanted more than he’s got, and he can’t stop himself when he doesn’t let Hob pull away, hands gripping the thick meat of his upper thighs, teeth against teeth and gasping into each other’s mouths and suddenly Dream can’t even remember why he was so sad to begin with

I need you to know the phrase "shelter dog rizz" is sending me absolutely wheezing. Iconic.

And honestly? Yeah.

It takes a little while for Hob to get used to the man shaped creature who apparently now lives on the floor, but he figures that Dream has been Going Through Something for the last several thousand years so he probably deserves the opportunity to express his depressive episode in a relatively harmless way. He's still willing to talk to Hob, which is nice. Hob tells him about work and the pub and how he's in a hyperfixation over The Sims at the moment, which happens to him for a few week every year without fail. Dream sometimes talks about the goings on of his realm, and Matthew's shenanigans. A lot of the time he talks about how useless he feels and how, despite the fact that he ought not to feel fatigue at all, he's so tired.

Dream is surprisingly welcome company for Hob (who is lonely, though he would never ever dare to say that word to Dream again). Despite acting like a very strange rug, Dream is present and calming and when Hob lies down beside him on the floor, he feels absolutely peaceful.

Kissing Dream is absolutely the best drunken decision Hob has ever made (and there have been many). Dream melts against his body and the flicker of a smile starts in his eyes before finally quirking at the edge of his mouth.

Suddenly he's quite willing to spend less time on the floor... and more time in bed.

We said goodbye to my beautiful, clever Calliope three weeks ago. I'm doing better -- seeing how much of our life had become devoted to cancer care, and how different my memories of vibrant Calliope are compared to what it had become at the end.

I still miss her, so much. Especially her voice, and how she'd tell me what to do. Her brother complains (he complains a lot, lately; he misses her too and needs extra cuddles), but he doesn't converse or give me precise instructions. He's not likely to tell us we're playing out of tune, or put me down for a nap (and make sure I do it properly).

Calliope was special.

i've seen this character playlist challenge post resurfacing lately so i'd like to expand on the idea and create a more fully-fledged, more difficult challenge that'll hopefully expand your music horizons beyond the usual tumblrcore/fandom music taste

the challenge

create a character playlist of at least twenty (20+) songs without using the artists and genres listed below* in under an hour

("below" meaning below the readmore)

the restrictions

no artist can appear in the playlist twice

you must have at least three (3+) distinct genres in your playlist

you must include at least three (3+) artists with less than 100,000 listeners on spotify

you must include at least three (3+) songs that are primarily in a language other than english

you must include at least one (1+) hip hop/rap song from a non-white person (be creative with this! rap has a diverse range of sounds from doja cat to dr. dre to death grips)

It's been a while since I thought about their final break-up so I went back to watch 11x05 to write this - and oof, it was hard. 💔 It still makes me sad to think about how it ended but there was something cathartic about writing this. I hope you like it. 😊

It’s not the first time that Arizona has shown up at the house.

Last week, she was looking for a medical journal she had left behind. On Friday, she needed a dress from the back of the wardrobe for a fancy dinner she was attending with Herman over the weekend. Tonight, she is returning Sofia’s new plush monkey, insisting that she won’t settle without it – despite the fact that their daughter is fast asleep in bed.

No matter how the visits start, they keep ending the same way – with the brush of a hand or the sweeping of hair from eyes.

A step forward, closing the gap between their bodies. A kiss – and then more.

Callie watches Arizona’s chest rise and fall as she sleeps beside her. Her tousled hair splays across the pillow, her naked body curled against Callie’s. Her mouth is turned upwards in a small smile, her lips twitching every now and again. There is a peacefulness between them that transports Callie back to those early days when they were still getting to know each other.

She misses those days and how simple it was to be in each other’s company. It hasn’t been like that for such a long time; not since the plane crash really, no matter how much they tried. And they did try, so hard, to make it work – until it didn’t any more.

The break is permanent this time, the divorce papers being drawn up by the Torres family lawyer. She hasn’t told Arizona that part yet, doesn’t want to fall into another argument with her when they have reached an impasse. Instead, they keep falling into bed with one another.

But it can’t last.

Arizona stirs, her eyelids fluttering as she wakes from her slumber. Bright blue eyes look up at Callie, soft and loving.

Callie’s chest tightens as she digs deep to strengthen her resolve.

“It’s late,” she says quietly. “You should go.”

“I could stay?”

Callie shakes her head. “It’s not a good idea.”

“Calliope…”

Callie shudders at the way her name falls from Arizona’s lips. She used to love the way it sounded, but now it’s too intimate, and that’s not who they are any more.

“We can’t keep doing this,” Callie says. “Nothing’s changed and this isn’t good for either of us.”

Arizona opens her mouth but Callie cuts her off. “You should go,” she says again, resolutely this time.

Callie turns away, curling up on her right side and staring at the wall. Silence falls and she waits until she feels the bed dip and hears the rustling of clothes as Arizona dresses. Her skin prickles under the cool air as the comforter falls down the bed when Arizona stands up and walks out of the bedroom. Yet, Callie doesn’t move until she hears the front door close down the hallway. It is only then that she rolls over and stares at the empty space beside her.

She reaches out and trails her fingers over the sheets that are still moulded to Arizona’s shape. She shifts her body forwards so that she can bury her face in the pillow that still carries the scent of Arizona’s shampoo, inhaling deeply.

A tear falls down her cheek. It’s not the first time that Arizona has shown up at the house, but today was the last time.
