Madiz (originally named Triton)
Delivered in 1902 by Ailsa Shipbuilding in Troon, Scotland. Commissioned by James Coates Jnr, as a support vessel for his schooner, Madiz was designed by legendary naval architect George L. Watson, who established the very first yacht design studio office in the world.
The famous yacht designer was also behind several other prestigious classics like Britannia, the most successful racing yacht of all time, and the America's Cup challengers Thistle, Valkyrie, and Shamrock II.

One of the Greatest Inventions of All Time
Tumblr media
Nikola Tesla has many revolutionary inventions to his credit, but he is best known for his pioneering work in the development and promotion of alternating current (AC) electrical systems. Tesla's innovations in AC technology revolutionized the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power, becoming the foundation for the modern electrical power systems that we use today.
There is a common misconception made that Tesla was the first to invent, or discover, AC, but this is not true. It is well-known that Hippolyte Pixii was the first to discover AC in 1832. Pixii was an instrument maker from Paris who built an early form of an alternating current electrical generator (based on the principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday), and thus started a new industry in power transmission. Tesla was not the first to discover or invent an AC motor, but he was the first to invent a practical AC induction motor with commercial value that could outperform all other motors. It must be noted that Italian inventor Galileo Ferraris also invented an induction motor similar to Tesla's, but it had no commercial value, and he even admitted himself that it was useless. Tesla's induction motor operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, properly utilizing a rotating magnetic field that induces a current in a stationary conductor, resulting in rotational motion. The utilization of the rotating magnetic field makes the motor more simple, robust, versatile, efficient, and cost effective in that it has less moving parts reducing the likelihood of mechanical failure (as was common in other motors).
Tumblr media
Tesla's induction motor became a fundamental component in the field of electrical engineering and is used today in various applications, being one of the most widely used devices in the world. The motors play a crucial role in transmitting electrical power to homes and businesses. They are commonly used in power generation plants to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, which is then transmitted through the power grid for distribution to various locations. Induction motors are also widely employed in appliances and machinery within homes and businesses for various applications. These applications include conveyor systems, hoists, cranes, lifts, pumps, fans, ventilation systems, compressors, manufacturing machinery, wind turbines, washing machines, refrigerators, garbage disposals, microwaves, dishwashers, vacuums, air conditioners, robotics, electric vehicles, trains, power tools, printers, etc. Basically, anything that requires a spinning action for power.
The induction motor is widely considered one of the most important inventions in the history of electrical engineering. Its importance lies in its transformative impact on industries, its efficiency and reliability, and its role in the broader electrification of society.

On December 30th 1899 the Albion Motor Company was established.
What I love most about this Motor company are than names of the vehicles have a great Scottish connection, The Clydesdale, The Reiver, The Chieftain and The Claymore to name but a few.
The factory was originally in Glasgow, moving to Scotstoun in 1903 and it initially manufactured motor cars until in 1909 when they switched to commercial vehicle manufacture, trucks then buses.
Norman O. Fulton and T. Blackwood Murray founded The Albion Motor Car Company, in Glasgow, in 1902, Albion built it's first commercial vehicle. This simple vehicle was a half-ton van. A development a 3/4 ton van. More models followed, ranging in payload weights up to 2 tons.
Albion continued to build lightweight vehicles, but they built their first 3-4 ton payload commercial, the A10, in 1910.
Having been accepted by the government, some 6000 such examples were built for war service during World War I. This was to become Albions most famous truck, and continued in production until 1926.
As well as trucks Albion also made charabanc, as seen in the two pics showing a 1906 model and a restored 1912 one, aren't they great! The restored charabanc is in the Beamish Museum in Morth East Enfgland. The first charabancs were 12 seaters, they went on to build 20 and 30 saeter versions.  The Model 26 30 seater was later to be named 'Viking' took just over 24 hours to complete a non-stop run from Glasgow to London and back in 1925.
From 1928, the Albion rising sun logo, was fitted to radiator tops, and in 1930, the company became Albion Motors Limited.
During World War II, Albion Motors manufactured Enfield No 2 Mk I revolvers to aid the war effort. By 1945, 24,000 revolvers were produced.
Leyland Motors acquired Albion in 1951, ensuring that all Albions used increasing amounts of Leyland components.
Political shifts in the manufacturing bodies of British Leyland dictated that the Albion name would disappear by 1972, although the Scotstoun factory that built them was destined to build medium-weight trucks for LeylTrucks and buses (single- and double-deckers) were manufactured in the Scotstoun works until 1980. The buses were exported to Asia, East Africa, Australia, India and South Africa. Almost all Albion buses were given names beginning with "V", these models being the Victor, Valiant, Viking, Valkyrie, and Venturer.and.
Glasgow born Mark Knopfler's song, Border Reiver, the first cut on his 2009 release, Get Lucky, contains direct references My Scotstoun lassie, She's an Albion and Sure as the Sunrise.
There is a museum dedicated to Albion Motors in Biggar, but it is temporaraily closed just now.

amazing race au pleaseeeeee (i live for andreil being chaotic trailblazers)
"It's a Detour!" Phil Keoghan's voice cuts in over the visuals. "Teams must pick one of two Detour options. First is Iron Stomach where the team must work together to first prepare a traditional Kalua pig." Phil Keoghan says over the image of an earthen oven with Kiawe wood, and hot lava rocks, a pig having some of the white hot volcanic rock put inside, the fire being covered by banana stumps, and then the pig being placed on top of those banana stumps before being covered by banana leaf, having some water sprayed onto it and then a sheet placed over it all before it was buried in the dirt. "Next they will head to a different earthen oven to uncover a pig that has been roasting in the traditional way and take it over to the chefs who will then shred the Kalua Pork. Teams will then have to clean their entire plate before they are given their clue." Phil explains the challenge.
"The other option is Iron Man." Phil Keoghan continues as the camera cuts to crystal clear water, 7 bicycles, and finally a beautiful running track. "The 1st Iron Man event was held in 1978 in Honolulu Hawaii before it moved here to the Big Island in 1981. We won't be asking contestants to swim 2.4 miles, bike 122 miles, and then run a 26.2 mile marathon but we will be asking one member from each team that chooses this to swim at least half a mile, bike for 2 miles and run for 1." Phil Keoghan explains. "Their partner will be driven to the finish line where they will need to wait for their partner to finish to receive their clue."
"Contestants can start on the Iron Man Challenge immediately as the start of the swimming portion is right behind me while contestants who choose Iron Stomach will need to make their way to the cooking location 3 miles from the clue box." Phil finishes as the camera cuts to Neil and Andrew.
Neil's eyes widen, "Andrew, can-"
"Give me your bag." Andrew sighs as Neil smiles brightly before handing him his bag and then his shirt before running straight into the water. "He acts like he hasn't run once this entire race." Andrew sighs as he climbs onto the golf cart. "You should hurry, he might beat us there." he says sinking back into the seat as he pulled out dry clothes from Neil's bag.
