There truly is magic in the mundane.
I love working with fibers. I feel like it was always in my life to end up here; with the wool.
The mundane magic worked by so many, many people throughout history. The literal thread that binds us to each other and to humankind's history.
A history grown from textiles! Where would humans be without the ability to adorn ourselves with color and cloth?!

big fan of "mundane" magic....spell of bonked on head, spell of rub two sticks together, stone of extra knife-sharpening, boots of dry feet, that sort of thing.
especially when a non-mage tries and can't quite get 100% of the result.

The Subtle Art of Finding Joy in the Mundane
In the dizzying whirlwind of our modern lives, with its notifications, deadlines, and endless to-do lists, it's easy to overlook the little things. Our quest for big achievements, exotic vacations, and grand celebrations often overshadows the understated moments that make up our daily lives. Yet, there's a profound beauty and solace in the mundane, waiting to be discovered.
The Magic of Morning Rituals
Consider the simple act of brewing your morning coffee or tea. The aromatic scent that wafts through your kitchen, the warmth of the mug against your palms, and that first invigorating sip – it's a ritual that beckons a new day, filled with possibilities. It's not just about the caffeine kick, but the quiet moments we grant ourselves before the day's chaos ensues.
Nature's Everyday Theater
Look out of your window. Even if you're in the heart of a bustling city, nature is putting on a daily show. The radiant hues of a sunrise, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, or even the rhythmic patter of rain against the windowpane. These are nature's gentle reminders of its cyclic rhythm, urging us to pause and sync our own rhythms with the world around us.
The Joy of Daily Tasks
Believe it or not, there's a meditative quality in mundane chores. The rhythmic act of washing dishes, the soft hum of a vacuum cleaner, or the therapeutic act of decluttering can be grounding experiences. They tether us to the present moment, offering a break from the incessant noise in our heads.
Conversations and Connections
Everyday joy is also about connections. A brief chat with a neighbor, a spontaneous phone call to a friend, or even the simple act of greeting your local grocery store cashier can forge bonds. It's in these fleeting interactions that we find a shared human experience.
Rediscovering Your Space
Sometimes, joy is about rediscovery. Re-read a favorite book, revisit old photographs, or rearrange your furniture. Familiar spaces and objects can offer new perspectives and insights when looked at with fresh eyes.
Wrapping Up
The art of finding joy in the mundane is essentially about shifting our perspective. It's about appreciating life's quiet moments and finding depth in simplicity. It's recognizing that while milestones and grand celebrations are significant, there's immeasurable joy to be found in the spaces in between.
In the words of novelist Alice Walker, "Expect nothing. Live frugally on surprise." Life's everyday surprises, no matter how small, are the threads that weave the beautiful tapestry of our existence. So, let's cherish them.

Old Cookbooks
For those who don't know me, my day job is working in a library and caring for old materials that are older than the building's own existence.
So it doesn't come as a shock that I started to desire to collect old and worn cookbooks.
I developed fondness to them, especially the ones with handwriting messily written inside.
From a practical standpoint, old methods can bring new ideas. Some have their own beliefs and folklore that can be useful for a kitchen witch as well, even if the person originally writing it did not consider themselves as such.
These old cookbooks, scented with dust and age, have their own magic within. They hold memories of all sorts, tips and tricks to make a recipe just work correctly.
I advise you to not only look at those old recipes, if you can have access to them of course, but also save your own. Print them out and store them to where you can see and use them, add notes scrawled in pencil or ink. You're adding your own magic with each writing and adjustment. Your writings and experiences and resources, making your mundane to be a sort of magic itself even years after your body is put to rest.

I took today to work on spell stuff. This involved going out and going to the store to pick up material components I was running low on, updating my spellbook with any new tricks I’d figured out to make casting easier and more efficient, and practicing the spells I don’t use in my day to day life. That part involved going to the local park and shooting some stuff at trees. Apparently I learned Ice Knife at some point? I don’t know why, I haven’t used it in forever.
I also made plans with Lara for tomorrow. We’re going to dinner, then a night of dancing at a local club. I’m super, super excited!

The Third game we played was Mundane Magic by Lysa Penrose. Jen ran this game about three crones who break the loom of fate and have to travel through time to fix things in person.

Mundane magic
Okay, but like, have you ever seen that post about everyone having their own little pieces of mundane magic?
I love that concept so much??
Like, sure, you can say it’s just a natural skill but like:
My mom is weirdly successful at making her own homemade/home grown food. Years ago, she planted a bunch of hapscap berry bushes, well now, every summer, we get a whole lot of hapscap pastries. A couple years ago, we started tapping trees, now we’ve got maple syrup. Last year, she got bees, now we’ve got honey.
My dad is absurdly good at memorizing the proper techniques for trapping and taxidermy. He has sat by me telling me, for the fifth time, that to skin a muskrat, you start at hind feet. He’s shown me the neat trick he found for how to hold the beaver when you get to the torso. I’ve seen him gut a deer even though this can’t be more than the fourth time he’s done this.
My brother can beat a whole-ass videogame, start to finish, including all the bosses, in a day, the same i could do for books.
My sister knows all the right buttons to push to get a rise out of us, and i’m guilty of some irrational irritation because of this.
And me? I can make friends, anywhere, anytime. I can remember absurd facts from god knows when. I am immune to sugar crashes and sugar rushes.
We’ve all got little bits of magic, like lucky pennies,
What’s yours?

"I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live - if I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love."

The more I work on In Name Only, the more enamoured I become with all of the magicks at my disposal. You have the obvious uses, of course -- healing magicks, destructive magicks, green magicks, etc., but the overlap between them all, both in combination and in mundane application, is perhaps the most enjoyable bit of creative work. (Aside from INO being a giant playground for an entire host of queer and disabled characters in general, I mean.)
Rhydel, for example, is first and foremost a healer. His magicks are warm and soothing. They can also rend and twist flesh and bone in horrific ways. He's also a walking microwave that people keep handing cookies to because it turns out his magicks are perfect for warming them back up to just-baked goodness.
Adavar is a soldier. His ice magicks are offensive and protective -- spikes, and spears, and ice walls. But they're also soothing to burns and the heat-sensitive scars left behind by Noctis Cavum. Merchants often employ those versed in ice-magicks to help in the transport of fresh goods, as well.
The wilds are dotted with berry bushes and 'feral' carrots, potatoes, and the like because of mundane magick. Leftover scraps planted and coaxed into growing with green magicks to replenish rations, the plants then left to sustain the next passersby just as fully.
Water magick users pulling sea- or lake-water and purifying it, or else working in tandem with healers and medics to create saline solutions on the fly. Earth magicks being utilized first and foremost as agricultural practices. Fire magicks to keep a hearth burning throughout the winter on a small stack of logs, or else to keep the temperature just right for every dish cooked.
Just. Mundane magick, y'all.

There's a type of magic I call mundane magic.
It's not magic as we think of it. It's certainly creating something from nothing, but what it creates is something everyone can do. A hot dinner, freshly cooked, is mundane magic. It can bring people to their knees with taste and memory, and it was created.
Art, writing... it was just an idea, not existing in real life, and just with a little help, it was created from nothing. A story or piece of art that can touch so many people, and it was birthed from someone's head.
Realization. You're asexual. You're gay. You're trans. You find out who "you" are from a type of mundane magic, words conjured and resonating until it reveals the secret you knew you had but didn't have the key for.
Magic is beautiful, and the way the mundane can turn into something beautiful and magical is breathtaking.

Owning Your Own Power
When you reclaim your magic, doors open for you. But how do you reclaim your magic? What if you only have really mundane magic? What if you are not the chosen one? Today let's talk about the importance of mundane magic.
Daily writing promptWho is the most confident person you know?View all responses One of the most frequently used, and frequently maligned, literary devices found in the world of Fantasy is the protagonist with hidden gifts. It is not hard to see why; it is often handled as a way for the writer to escape a hole they cannot seem to otherwise find their way out of and is often treated as the…

sometimes life feels so sad that not even reading my favourite books can save me.
sometimes life feels so great that just looking through my window at the changing leaves and the sun and the people getting coffee and pastries seem like the most miraculous thing in the world.

I find it eerie that so many memories can be stored inside an ordinary object. I had a friend with whom I'd always read an encyclopaedia with every time I went to their house. Our most favourite page had a picture of the Norse goddess Freya riding her chariot pulled by cats and we literally obsessed over that image. Just before I left for India, my friend gave me a copy of that book because she knew how much I loved that picture. I still have it and whenever I look at it, I'm reminded of the life I had with that childhood friend

A friend of mine had this idea, and I’d love to see it in an urban fantasy: magic is real and it stays secret because it looks like bad CGI. The fakest thing ever.
People who witness magic in person can always have their minds clouded, as they have been for most of human history, but all this newfangled technology has to be handled a different way. A video camera records exactly what it sees.
So, what it sees is … something that looks laughably fake. For any time period. The various secret magicians of the world make a point to keep their spells up to date with the current mundane trends — some of them even have running contests for who can make the most fake-looking spell.
I imagine they have a great time doing it. I sure would.
