Prof. Rose AU Concept

To be clear this isn't the only Au/ comic I'll put the model in but it is the one that comes to mind for me most often.

All of team RWBY are born into the previous generation.

Ruby would've never thought of herself as the teaching type of Huntress and yet here she was in Beacon showing students how to Huntress with the best of them.

So yeah she was a bit late to the classes she taught, and liked to dress... Um, a bit messily BUT THAT WAS HER METHOD GOSH DANGIT!

Besides she was a adult, and a awesome one at that. Heck Gynda barely ever scolded her... Anymore.

Today was no different either as she walked to the auditorium. Near the launch pad, watching as new students came flocking out looking around with stars in their eyes and hope in their hearts.

She remembered being like that back then... Okay, maybe not like that one blonde blowing chunks into the garbage can but still.

A bunch of Weiss's Dust packed, she was Enough reminiscing she had stuff to do like being a awesome partner, moving her friend's Dust to their room. Now she didn't need to pay extra for them to navigate Beacon and, and, ACHOO!!!

'Boom!'

What Was This Place Cursed!? Really? the same spot she blew up I on her first day her all those years ago!

At least she didn't have a fuming Weiss to deal with this time again... Right now.

She sat there sulking remembering back then to. That'd nearly broken her back in the day. But she knew better now, nobody would come to help he-

"You okay?" She blinked, looking up and meeting gazes with a boy.

"Aren't you the guy who blew chunks in the trash?" And like that she'd instantly insulted one of her students and a nice cute one too... Wait, cute?

"Hey I have motion sickness! It's a common problem that a lot of people have." They walked through the school, him quick to follow her lead. The boys name was Jaune, obviously he was a first year.

And he wielded a classic bastard sword with a mecha-shifting sheath/ shield. Nothing fancy but the metal was like freakishly durable and seemed immune to rust! She'd admit to drooling over the thought of what she could make with a alloy like that.

Oh And Jaune Was A Arc!

A Actual Arc! To most people that wouldn't mean much, heck to hear even just a few years ago it wouldn't mean much. But now that she and her team were Part of Ozpins super secret decret circle she knew better.

Jaune came from a long line of heroes, heroes who fought against Salem and in just about every war you could look up. Heck one of the two people exemplified on the statue were a Arc!

Yep Jaune was gonne do great, awesome things, she just had a gut feeling about these sorta things. He even got that she was older then him! And with her baby face that was saying something!

Though admittedly he did only think she was a senior, but still. Jaune was hitting every box to being her favorite student this year. She was so excited she was gushing about her new friend to Glynda and the rest of the staff that night.

Still if Jaune was gonna be her new favorite student she wanted to know everything about him she could. Some research was in order... And he cheated his way into Beacon...

Cool, and here she was expecting worse like him being a former terrorist or bandit like Blake or her uncle Qrow. He just never went to combat school.

That wasn't so bad, he probably had the basics down and could he taught the rest. Yep, everything would be A-Okay!

What Kinda Parents Didn't Unlock Thier Kids Auras When They Wanted To Fight Grimm!

Huh? She, she didn't like that... At all. Though there were some hiccups Jaune and his team managed to pass, with Jaune leading it... Yeah she was getting flashbacks to her first year.

The party started and his team was the center of attention or to be more accurate Pyrrha and very very much not normal knees. Good thing Jaune seemed to catch on quick cuz he quickly took the lead and acted like a buffer between her adoring fans. And now Pyrrha was blushing as she looked to him.

Did she like him... No.

Okay, so maybe she had a few drinks, but she was a adult so it was fine... Besides the drinks just made Jaune look yummiest after all... Yummier?

She dragged him off for super secret team leaders advice that none of the other leaders needed. Why would they?

Nope Jaune was her friend and student, which meant she won, Pyrrha was just his partner.

So they talked, about how imitation went, about his family (And geez what a family) and what he wanted to be... Like her? Her?

"Yeah, I looked some videos up and figured out you were some kinda hero Craterfac-, I mean Ms. Rose.

Nope! She did not like that! And refused to let it stand. And when he dared to refuse her refusal she decided force was needed and tackled him down.

Pinning down her new friend/ student she threatened him to start calling her Ruby again like all her friends only to freeze up. Becaus something was pushing up against her. Something big and hard, and in Jaune's pants... Oh!

And like that he was off, rushing away with a absolutely tomato colored face. And she was left there, everything clicking in her head and tingling in her body... Oh, so she had a crush on Jaune...

And didn't that present a problem, Ruby Awesome Rose had butt tons of experience in a lot of stuff.

Fighting Grimm, Weapon Repair, Baking... But romance was very much not her field. And Weiss and Yang were nowhere in sight to ask for advice. Well, at least there was once source of study she had available on hand.

Thank Oum for Blake and her books, she was sure they'd make Great references material...

And great they did, especially with a drink or two... Yep Jaune could definitely be like these studs and... Heheh and do fun stuff to her.

Actually 'Hic' why did she never think about making babies? She was a grown woman, and Jaune she could chisel into a super hunky knight.

Yeah, the more she thought of it the better that idea got. And drinks made the plan all the sexier. utterly sloshed, she worked another orgasm off of watching a teacher student porno, and found herself quite annoyed.

Why was she using this? There was a cute dork who just passed Initiation AKA was totally and utterly legal.

Her mind made up she whipped out her Scroll and made her way down go JNPR's room. Knocking on it, waiting for someone to answer, for 'Him' to answer, the door opening her prize came half confused as and all flustered as he readied to speak. But she didn't let him, after all she wanted a taste really bad...

Lips smacking she pulled back and found him landing flat on him ass face red as a tomato and pitching a new tent.

Her drunk mind worked a lightbulb and she smiled. .

That was just the sorta reaction she wanted, she would pressed on, already getting ready to pull down her top but she could hear the familiar sound of Glynda's heels as she made her way there.

Jaune was flustered, not sure how he was gonna face Prof. Rose, yep, Professor, Ruby as it turned out wasn't just some quirky fourth year student. Nope, his dumb butt went and made buddies with his teacher... He could already hear the bullies cracking their knuckles. That team CRDL group had been bugging him ever since, but somehow that wasn’t even the worst of it. Nope, the worst was Ruby herself, well… What she did while drunk…

 His cheeks pinked, still vaguely recalling the taste of strawberries… He really needed to clear the air, he knew asses who tried to take advantage of his sisters when they were drunk and he had no intention of falling in with that lot.

All he could do was try to clear the air with miss Rose and hope she would be understanding, she might’ve kissed him but he did lean into it instead of rejecting it. So even if others would argue it he felt guilty… Still he was in his first class here and she was gonna teach it, fingers crossed she wouldn’t hate his… His. Sexy… Wha!? No he meant what was she wearing!?

One awesome thing about having a Drunkle Qrow was that Ruby Rose was a expert drinker, highly adapted and incredibly quick to bounce back. AKA no hang overs and a crystal clear memory… And oh did she make great memories last night!

Hehe, he tasted like honey, and his face got all red, she bit her lip thinking about it, okay so yep Ruby Rose had it bad. And usually she might hesitate, but Drunk Ruby had nailed the assist! And now Ruby knew Jaune was interested and that she wanted it!

Oh she panicked at first, but then looked up the rule book and yeppers it was all cool and legal! Heck her dating Jaune wasn’t nearly as bad as half the stuff her team got into back when they were students!

Maybe when she was a freshman she might’ve panicked, have second guessed herself… But that was then, she’d gone through to much, to many difficult experiences to be thwarted by romance… Mt. Glenn… Dr. Merlot and Salem’s sinister circle and the Hunters disappearing in Mistral. Ruby Rose had faced death and danger on scales most hunters would never know.

And from them she’d learned above all else the value in being decisive, and Ruby Decisive Rose had a new goal! And that goal was a blonde young knight husbando! Mark her words! Ruby Rose was Gonna get herself a man! And Jaune Arc didn’t stand a chance!

She would use all the knowledge and know how of Blake’s many smutty books, and years observing her big sis flirting to her full advantage! She was no longer a member of the itty bitty boobie club dangit, she had Ruboobies to match her Bubooty! And she was gonna use it to it’s full effect!

And Ozpin was all for her making some Silver Eyed Babies! Which meant Jaune Arc was as good as her’s! Ruby Rose had it going on and every student in the class had their eyes on her in her sexy dress including Jaune!

Genuinely hate how people routinely excuse salems actions in The Lost Fable tbh. Specifically regarding their kids.

Like, I'm sorry, but Salem NEVER cared about them. They were collateral damage. She used her own daughters silhouettes to taunt Oz, and she was the one who attacked first.

"Those kids would've lived if Oz hadn't tried sneaking them out!" So we're agreeing that Salem was an active danger to both Oz and their daughters? She shot first, and Oz HAD to retaliate to protect them, and unfortunately failed.

And she used their kids silhouettes to TAUNT Oz and Oscar. There's never anything that so much as IMPLIES Salem grieved for their children. Even IF she grieved and moved on, no SANE mother uses her dead children to taunt her ex. And Salem isn't the type to just... move on; that isn't in her character. The only answer is that she NEVER grieved nor cared.

Meanwhile it's full on said that Oz grieved, for several LIVES, while drowning himself in alcohol in an attempt to forget what happened, possibly killing himself several times via alcohol poisoning. Any good father would react badly to losing his children in a horrible accident like that.

Also did we just... forget that Salem caused EVERYTHING in the show?? She indirectly killed Pyrrha, Penny, destroyed Beacon, destroyed Atlas, wrecked Haven, and has killed COUNTLESS innocent people including actual CHILDREN, regardless of if they were in the Academies or not. She tortured and manipulated Cinder when Cinder disobeyed her, tried the same with Emerald when she defected, tried killing hazel when he did the same. Not only that but she experimented on innocent SEWs, turning them into monsters. Plus she tortured an actual 15 year old. And that's not even getting into the sheer amount of manipulation that goes into Tyrian.

And what has Oz done?

Uh... leave out that Salem was immortal to a bunch of kids, gave them an out and told them the war was dangerous, and blamed himself for the Fall of Beacon and Pyrrhas death. The only thing that's pretty bad was the fact he lied to his inner circle, but even then just about one thing.

He could've taken Ravens shape shifting magic at any time. Oz is an immortal wizard, he could've absolutely tracked her down and taken back his magic. But he didn't, as a show of TRUST, despite the fact that she'd use her magic to hurt people. Oz left a metaphorical door open for her if Raven ever wanted to return.

If this were Salem? If he were anything like her?

Raven would be DEAD.

But Oz is actually a good person so... she's not.

The Academies were made to give people the tools and resources to protect themselves from Grimm, while also effectively helping push Salem back. People going into the Academies KNOW what they're signing up for. The Grimm aren't just gonna sit back, they're ALWAYS going to inevitably attack. It's better if people actually, yknow, know how to fight and protect others. And the youngest people normally go into them is 17 years old. And they have training missions, so if they want to back out, they can at ANY time.

Anyways Salem fucking sucks, Oz is nothing like her, and yall need to quit sucking her metaphorical dick. She's a good character, very interesting and complex, but she's genuinely horrible. If you still agree with Salem after knowing what she's done... please don't have kids.

@anarchistauthor Really, a good chunk of the male characters end up being typical male archetypes, but having their typical expectations and archetypes put under a microscope and stripped of plot armor for the sake of the greater narrative:

Ozma and Oscar being different types of Chosen Ones, with the former being someone who being chosen results in him being manipulated by the deity who "chose him" into turning against his lover, and because of the fallout of that devolves into a manipulative liar who basically alienates everyone because he's too dogmatically stuck in his ways to acknowledge that he's being played for a fool by the very deity who chose him.

Oscar meanwhile gets the farm boy with a grand destiny shtick...but as basically just another pawn in a grand crusade against the initial Big Bad, doomed to have his identity subsumed against his will for the sake of a greater good that will never come because of the former's inability to get out of his situation. Oscar, instead of being the protagonist, instead finds himself in a fight for his own right to exist as a person, having to push back against his own transformation while trying to figure out who he's really supposed to be in this mess.

Ren's the typical "my village is dead because of monsters and I want revenge", but he ends up getting his revenge very early on, and it's revealed that it was ultimately a red herring for his ACTUAL issues, which involve his desire for a sense of certainty and control over his life by becoming a huntsman and destroying the destroyer of his village...which doesn't actually resolve anything. He instead ends up having to deal with the aftermath and the unearthing of his deep-seated traumas regarding authority and his own sense of powerlessness and the consequences it nearly has for his relationship with Nora, who finds herself on the opposite side of an ideological impasse as a result.

Adam is the revolutionary pushed by a desire for revenge against those who tormented him, but instead shows how much his desires twisted him until he started caring more and more about his own bloodlust, and willingly nearly destroyed everything he claimed to stand for because he couldn't face reality of how much he was making things worse for his race.

And Ironwood is the tough military man who views himself as the last thing standing against an unbeatable foe, who has to make the tough decisions that his comrades refuse to make...but it soon becomes incredibly clear that rather than that being true, he's more akin to a mall cop mixed with a politician playing soldier in a war that he doesn't really understand at all, because he's never actually FOUGHT a real war, and his bullheaded ignorance and self-importance leads to him alienating everyone and nearly ruined everything.

And all of these things end up leading to the point that the current world order that Ozpin created is deeply flawed and actively useless against the likes of Salem and the Gods, and how our heroines need to change their methods and strategy if they want to have any hope of actually fixing the true situation, instead of just ending up blindly repeating the same mistakes that their predecessors did.

At the end of the day, RWBY is the story of four girls who do everything they can to save the world. Not because they think they're better than everyone else, or more qualified, and certainly not because of "destiny" hogwash. Just because they know someone has to do it, and they've seen all the ways that everyone else who tried has fucked it up. Keeping secrets, isolating, manipulation, those tactics all failed completely. So, the Ruby Rose method is to do the opposite: Be honest and forward about the issue, ask for help, and count on others.

And it worked.

Your thoughts about Remnant's kingdoms having imperialistic and expansionist tendencies that don't have anything to do with Salem or Ozma makes me wonder, at least based on what I vaguely remember of the game RWBY Arrowfell:

In Arrowfell, we learn about the existence of ruins outside of Atlas and Mantle with ancient historical artifacts, and that makes me question if Solitas really as empty as it seemed, or was there already indigenous people living there before the displaced settlers of whatever regions of Sanus showed up on their doorstep? Did THEY get destroyed by those settlers?

Did those people live alongside Solitas' Grimm with no issue, and shit only went down AFTER the emotionally repressed imperialists of Sanus came in and wiped out whatever culture they had, imposing their own "Grimm evil emotions bad must repress and subjugate" nonsense onto a culture that might have already figured out a better solution?

I keep thinking about this because of how the settlers of the local settlements there within the game have vastly different appearances, and strongly implied different cultures compared to the likes of Mantle and Atlas.

i rotate those ruins in my mind a lot, because the only thing we really know about them is that they predate the great war and they’re a formally-designated “heritage site.” vine talks about artifacts taken from the site as though they’re very ancient, but his statements are framed pretty overtly as bullshit—he comes across more as a new age mumbo jumbo type of hobbyist than someone serious about history. older than the great war just means that the ruins are at least a century old.

so there’s definitely a layer here of atlas—which has probably not been around much longer than a century or two—culturally not having a very accurate sense of historical scale (a la US americans thinking anything older than a century or two is ‘ancient’) and exoticizing The Past. whereas beacon’s professor of history teaches teaches the great war and its aftermath as recent history, because vale is much older.

that said, tumak does look like it’s a few centuries old, because it’s all built of stone. in any other story i’d take it as a given that the people living there were conquered or displaced by mantelian settlers for… the same reasons i take it as a given that mistral being called an “empire” and having “territories” means what it sounds like.

what gives me pause with regard to tumak and mantle is—well, two things:

there were no grimm in western solitas when mantle’s first settlers arrived.

it’s heavily implied that the global industrial revolution began in mantle following the discovery of large dust deposits under the tundra.

now, the one thing we know for certain about grimm is that they eat people and they die in captivity, meaning that they do need to eat. the simplest explanation for there being no grimm in western solitas when the mantelian settlers turned up is that there weren’t any people there for grimm to eat.

the second point matters matters because the industrial revolution is a prerequisite for building anything with steel: before this confluence between practical necessity and a great abundance of underground dust deposits, every large structure on remnant would have been built with timber or stone or clay, or whatever material happened to be abundant in a given region.

(i am making a drastic oversimplification here but, in essence, the main reason we had our industrial revolution when and where we did is england ran out of trees and started digging for coal. coal mines have a lot of coal on site, making coal-powered machines a more cost-effective way to pump water out of deep shafts than manual labor, and then after a certain point these pumps become very efficient and it becomes cost-effective to employ mechanized rotational movement further away from the coal mines, and then you get automated spinning jennies and trains and it all snowballs from there. whether it’s on purpose or not, remnant’s industrial revolution occurred under precisely similar conditions and i think that’s neat.)

one presumes that mantelian settlers didn’t go from living in natural caves or snow shelters to steel-frame construction overnight. the technological innovation needed to build with steel in subzero temperatures would have been a long, iterative process. both tumak and the “ancient monument” built in the same architectural style are also situated on the continent’s western coast, while mantle is at least a few hundred miles inland (although it’s difficult to get an accurate sense of scale from the game map). if i’m right that these settlers were displaced from northeast sanus by valean expansion, the west coast of solitas is where they would have landed.

we also know that mantle itself is built on top of what seems to be an enormous dust mine.

in the WOR episode, the early settlement is represented like this, with people keeping watch over coastal cliffs and grimm being frozen solid by the cold:

the amity arena ice sabyr card indicates that the ice-encrusted solitan grimm adapted to the cold fairly quickly:

These Sabyrs seem to have somehow adapted to Mantle's environment. Gone are the days when the cold kept the Grimm at bay, and now we deal with the ice crusted versions of the Sabyr. Still, there is a burning question in our minds. Didn't these Sabyr… adjust a little too quickly?

(which, lol. it’s dust. solitan grimm incorporate dust into their bodies to give themselves a protective coating against the cold; we’ve seen the geist in the mine use dust to armor itself against attack. a lot of the amity arena grimm cards are fun; the one for seers is literally like “they’re super weird, we have no idea what they do because we’ve only ever found broken husks, but they’re floating crystal balls with tentacles so we assume they must be able to control people. probably.” grimm studies is pseudoscience!)

and then back to the WOR episode, the depicted distance between mantle and alsius is wildly exaggerated:

with mantle located on the southwestern peninsula and alsius being where mantle stands—or stood—in the present day. before playing arrowfell, i always took that to be just a stylistic choice to emphasize the economic separation between mantle and alsius, but:

again, nothing is to scale here, but mantle and the atlesian crater are in the right place, there’s an abandoned dust mine on that southwest peninsula, an outpost with a train on the western island, and tumak and the other ruin along the west coast. so the relocation depicted in the WOR episode—a migration inward from the coastal region to where mantle is today—actually seems to have been literal.

what makes the most sense to me is that these coastal ruins were built by the original settlers a few hundred years ago. both tumak and the “monument” are mainly underground, with these barrow-like stone caps over the entrances: this strikes me as a solidly defensible layout for fending off weakened, scattered packs of grimm, but not one that could withstand the increasing numbers of cold-hardy grimm as time went on.

in the SDC WOR episode, it’s noted that mantle’s existing dust mines were nearly depleted before nicholas schnee discovered new deposits in the mountains to the north. and in arrowfell, if memory serves, the old southwest mine was exhausted and abandoned long ago. taking this to its logical conclusion, the people living in tumak and other coastal settlements had to deal with a relatively fast spike in grimm populations at a time when dust was already becoming scarce, so they abandoned these sites and migrated to a more defensible area—the plain flanked by mountains—where they serendipitously found much larger and deeper dust deposits. and that became mantle and alsius/atlas.

meanwhile, over on the eastern side of the continent…

the geographic separation here is pretty striking! in between mantle and the free towns to the east we have a large inland sea and mountains. these towns are explicitly not part of the kingdom and, as you noted, have a pretty different culture. (including cultural attitudes toward the grimm: a huge megoliath wanders into essen early in the game and the townspeople just… clear out of the immediate area and keep an eye on it from afar, which is probably also how the unnamed village in v4 dealt with that geist. there is also a lady from dormir who goes into GRIMM-INFESTED CAVES, alone, to dig up dust. nothing bad happens to her.)

tellingly, bram thornmane seems to view these free towns as independent polities for the purpose of fueling his persecution complex by treating his residence in essen like a quasi-exile from atlas, but when it’s politically expedient to do so he acts as though these are satellite communities dependent on atlesian protection, hence his use of the grimm lures to attack them as well as atlas and mantle. i imagine that this is a common atlesian attitude.

one of the villagers—cerise claire, who fled from crossed to essen when the former was overwhelmed as a consequence of thornmane’s scheme—mentions having ancestors who fought during the great war; specifically she implies that her ancestors were involved in resistance to the mantelian regime’s prohibition against art and self-expression. the free towns don’t seem to be particularly young—wood and stone, again suggesting pre-industrial construction—so they must have existed before the war.

cerise is also a faunus (i think; it’s hard to tell if the wolfish ears are attached to her head or just to her hood and they’re not the same color as her hair, but they’re a prominent feature of her design and why do that if she’s not meant to be faunus) which certainly. carries a lot of unspoken weight in the remarks she makes about her ancestor bravely keeping a journal of their years fighting in the great war… and if her family lived in crossed back then, well.

gestures at vacuo’s side of the great war being a desperate bid for independence. gestures at the implication that the vytal accords were in large part a decolonial project; vacuo and menagerie became sovereign states, and a huge swath of eastern anima seems to have been freed from mistrali rule.

mantle and mistral formed an alliance during the conquest of northern anima; if if the towns in eastern solitas are older than the great war—which is quite plausible!—then they likely existed during this period of time and it seems reasonable to think that they might have been occupied as well, if not by mantle then by mistral. eastern solitas being under occupation prior to the war and liberated by the accords thanks in part to the efforts of a local rebellion tracks.

but an interesting thought occurs to me: this means the quasi-scientific modern narrative that the grimm “adapted” to the cold unnaturally fast might be baseless. there would have been cold-hardy grimm living east of the mountains already. perhaps the intense hardship and struggle of those early years simply drew an existing population of grimm over the mountains?

Been rewatching all Volumes as I do because I love the show so much. One of the different rabbit holes I go down is the other Relics and their potential allusions.

I looked up Swords of Destruction and found 3 stories involving a sword and death. 2 of them doesn't really fit into the many aspects of RWBY and I've seen people mention one of these but imo it doesnt fit, the Sword of Damocles.

Whereas the Sword Relic has so far been described in minimal ways involving the Great War and it can be theorized that the Choice the King had was most likely stop the War or go after Salem; the Sword Damocles wasn't about Destruction as a whole but showing one person that being a king isn't just about glamour and rich food as Damocles had envied.

Then there's the Norse Sword Tyrfing, as described "the keenest of all blades; a bright light came when drawn. Held unsheathed became the death of a man, and it had always to be sheathed with blood still fresh. According to stories, There was no living being that could survive being wounded by Tyrfing regardless of the wound, and whoever bore it in battle won. One story states it can kill gods as someone recognized Odin in disguise, attacked and caused Odin to transform into a hawk to escape." (Wiki source summary) This sword feels close but moreso for the Great War WoR segments. Whereas the last sword I read about fits multiple aspects

My personal theory is the allusion will be off of the other Norse weapon, Haevateinn (also written Laevateinn) which has been labeled as different types, not just a sword. Based on the story, Loki made this weapon to kill Viðofnir, a rooster sitting on the crown of the world tree Mímaðeir, the tree twin to the world tree Yggdrasil, in order to start Ragnarok. Viðofnir was to warn Odin and to prevent the end. We can definitely assume the Tree in Ever After alludes to Yggdrasil.

For me it's so on the nose for the show lore as well as Rooster Teeth easter eggs. And having Loki or an allusion to Loki as the Relic Spirit also feels right as both other Spirits in their cultures are also trickster/magical beings relating to the Relic.

I'd have another for Crown of Choice but thanks to other redditors and my knowledge of Greek mythos, I have a strong sense that it's going to be based on the Apollo/Daphne allusions. (Already the insignia is a laurel wreath)

RWBY lacks Bathos and that seems to bother people.

It occurs to me that this is another reason why the RWDE and so-called critics consider RWBY a good punching bag is summed up alot in Overly Sarcastic Productions’ video on Bathos. By this I mean that it’s unabashedly proud of being a web series inspired by Anime. While not every trope in the medium is used (luckily), it still indulges in a lot of cliches the medium is known for.

Also think about how sincere RWBY is. Ozpin’s grand speeches about the war and its aftereffects or even the human nature of fear. Salem’s monologue at the start of Volume 1 and end of Volume 3. Ruby’s grandstanding against Cordovin. Blake and Yang just... Blake and Yang.

There may be some goofiness along the way but it’s clear that the writers are not here to appeal to the lowest common denimenator like Warner Bros would’ve if the studio had control over it.

We all know how that went with Gen:Lock. :/

I find myself comparing to a lot of this to Red vs. Blue. While the latter was sincere and more deep down the road, it started out of as a dudebro-y type of comedy.

Said comedy would persist even as it would become more sincere such as with Volume 8 putting Sarge, Church and Wash’s characters to the test. The Freelancer flashbacks also dial back the slapstick to a near zero but still be keen to sling some zingers in battle.

RWBY doesn't start out as a parody of Halo or anything but is starting mostly from scratch and is largely unironic about what it wants to be. There are few times where you'd find RvB's style of college frat boy humor in RWBY if at all.

So a lot of the RWDE as well as non-fans sees them opening up their heart and seeing a target with an easy bull's eye.

How would you do Grimm then?

It's actually something I thought about the longest.

Mainly because removing all of the two gods stuff means Grimm as a concept would be even emptier. Its way too easy to just go "Oh they do this because VengefulHotSatanWife wanted it" or "they are this way because they were made this way".

I think for me it boils down to this set of questions

Why are the creatures of Grimm even a threat that requires literal armies trained all over the world?

Why are there different types/shapes/etc of Grimm?

What purpose would creatures like that have beyond just being something to fight?

I mentioned it in previous post but one big problem is the idea that Remnant, with all these overpowered people, still hasn't really "solved" the problem. You have a freshmen starting their school year defeating a giant Nevermore and then ending up eventually one-shotting a Goliath. An "apex predator", The Hound, gets defeated by scenery. The closest the story comes to Grimm being viewed as a menace after Beacon was the Apathy, but even then a newbie huntress just flashbangs them with magic eyes - the magic eyes that supposedly tons of people had in the world that you can just meet someone who has it, even though literal ageless being made a big deal out of them.

And then you have all the professors at the academies and the flying city and the borderline-magic Dust and literal mechs and robots that can punch a literally-Godzilla dead.

So why are the Grimm such a big deal then? What can be changed or added to make that make sense? Why can't people of Remnant just clean up everything or just live inside their cities like in a post-zombie apocalypse?

Well the obvious part is tied to not having Two Gods stuff and not having Salem be able to control them. You simply can't eradicate Grimm. That's it. Anything without a cause can be perpetual.

Creatures of Grimm are an unending threat that existed for most of human history

A kingdom could form a huge army and sweep the entire continent clean and the next day, somewhere there, there would be creatures of Grimm again. Even if it was an island surrounded by water and every single creature of Grimm got killed there, there was no guarantee there wouldn't be, let's say, Beowulves there soon after, somehow.

How do they appear? Why? Well that's for the story to answer.

Of course that creates another issue - Why would huntsmen go around actually fighting them if it's made pointless? Why not just defend the cities?

The answer is easy - they have to.

Grimm are toxic (literally)

In my idea, Grimm just merely existing somewhere in the world is damaging. The first indication I used is the idea that the surroundings of Beacon are now toxic to humans.

It's like an infection that expands and permeates the land, growing exponentially. It follows it's own set of rules, but generally the easiest way to describe it is that it's environment hostile to even the concept of life. Grimm being present literally infects the land.

This is an area below Vale. alongside the river is the area near Mt.Glenn, where The Goliaths dwell. In my idea, with the fall of Beacon and the Goliaths moving further up toward the city, the area has expanded.

And then there's the desert area between Vale and Vacuo important to the events of Great War, where the conflict attracted higher concentrations of Grimm.

The longer the issue remains unattended, the more irreversible damage is done, till eventually the surroundings turn into an area people outright can't enter. The habitable parts of the world slowly shrink.

And since there's no specific logic to where Grimm would appear, it could be anywhere - a little carelessness and you can have something like that close to a city(or inside it)

And that ties into another point.

The evolution and learning capabilities of creatures of Grimm

While Creatures of Grimm physiologically and psychologically defy common sense in terms of how one would understand a lifeform, they are very quick to adapt and learn.

If ten Beowulves encounter humans, nine of them mindlessly die, but the tenth escapes, the one that escaped would adapt a more cautious approach. And it's not just caution.

A "new" creatures of Grimm might be be dumber, just rushing at the target, while the ones that existed end up adopting specific behavioral traits learning from situations in the ways that increase their chances of survival, to become a perfect predator.

The purpose of the Grimm is now twofold:

To target humans, detecting negative emotions.

To survive and to spread.

(The show sort of already implies that with The Goliaths having sense of self-preservation, but the show doesn't seem to be really interested in that beyond that)

So the longer a creature of Grimm is allowed to just outright interact with the world, the stronger and more resilient it becomes.

And Adaptability leads to evolution. Stronger, more unique traits, battle scars, specific behavioral patterns - just think of the Alpha Beowulf in V3 finale.

Eventually as the creature adapts, it will grow old enough to be really toxic and powerful. The Goliath is one of the possible "end of the road" situations like that.

Not the only one though. There obviously aren't any mammoth-like Goliaths just calmly walking through the ocean floor, so water-based Grimm would obviously evolve in completely different direction, right?

The unifying aspect of all the ancient Grimm like The Goliaths is that they do not display the same level of impulsive behavior as normal creatures of Grimm. Instead they roam specific tainted areas and only act when the risks for failure are low. A strong enough surge of negative emotions though might attract them in a specific direction. And them moving would spread the infection faster.

And they are notably hard to kill. It took one hundred and twenty six trained huntsmen laying down their lives to kill a single Goliath that broke through in Mantle in the eve of Great War.

So now we have a world where Huntsmen have to go around killing Grimm and where the Grimm will just keep coming anyway and there is also an additional incentive to prevent spikes in negative emotion in order to keep the Goliaths contained.

That's all, right? Nope.

Even weaker creatures of Grimm are dangerous.

One of the first ones I used in the story is a Wraith. The key think about it is that it's really really weak.

But the way the creature behaves makes it a terrifying threat for the overall population of the world.

A couple of untrained farmers could likely take one down. To a huntsman, they are not even remotely a threat in combat.

But a single Wraith could likely cause an entire village to tear itself apart.

A Wraith would avoid confrontations and hide, preying on unsuspecting population via it's ability to induce paranoia or various other negative emotions. It's presence and shape would have a natural effect on the human psyche forcing people to subconsciously not want to realize it's there, to look away, to write it off as a random shadow or fruit of their imaginations.

Meanwhile it would pick off the people one by one, while also making the emotional states of the others worse and attracting other creatures of Grimm to the location.

It's a prime example of the kind of creature that can exist that, while posing absolutely zero real threat to a Huntsman, could be a scourge upon general population of the world.

And that's the core aspect of "normal" creatures of Grimm for me - they are not necessarily "stronger" or "more formidable" enemies, but they can cause enough harm. Just having another type of Grimm for no reason doesn't do. Each creature is the way it is because they follow specific behavioral patterns and act in specific way and thus are dangerous in a specific kind of way.

To sum up:

Grimm are an issue that can't be solved by just cleaning up the place and are a constant of the world.

Grimm are inherently toxic and humanity can't afford to just let them be even if they aren't in the immediate vicinity because the danger grows with time, irreversibly polluting the land.

Grimm evolution and adaptability make them terrifying monsters and the longer they are allowed to do their thing, the more dangerous and harder to kill they become.

Even weak Grimm can inflict irreversible damage to the population of Remnant.

So, I have a question I hope that isn't too much of a problem. How do you feel about Salem as a villain? Her character, her plans, and motivations and what the current Volumes have utilized her, how do you feel about what they do with her as a villain?

On paper, I don't have problems with Salem.

Since the beginning of the show, the Grimm are framed as this mysterious, endgame villain that the cast needs to deal with. There were two major ways they could have gone with this and honestly I wouldn't mind either:

They are a force of nature and cannot be resolved easily, just adapted to and lessen their deadly influence over the world

They have a source/leader who leads or coordinates them, and defeating them significantly reduces the Grimm's influence on the world.

Both can be interesting, and both can flow well with RWBY's themes if executed well. We know canon went with the latter, so that's the baseline we'll go with. Back when Salem was revealed in V3, many fans speculated she was a hyper-evolved Grimm that has lived for so long she gained human intelligence.

Now I used to be iffy on this back when this theory was trending, but over time I grew to like the idea, and thought it would have been a really cool way to frame Salem - she is the ultimate result of the arms race between the Hunters and Grimm, locked in an eternal battle to outpace each other. If Salem wasn't stopped, she would destroy everything. But you had to do it right. You had to somehow make it permanent and that the Grimm could never evolve down this path again.

Because if you don't properly deal with what is essentially the equivalent of the Grimm singularity, you've gotten rid of one problem. But the thing that comes after Salem will learn all of her failures, and then the world will be faced with a being that's even worse.

This idea, if you discount Salem's backstory and relation to Ozpin, and observe more her general vibe and tactics, can match pretty decently. Salem gives the vibe of a threat that is always watching and observing, growing in strength and influence. She's a very archetypal villain type: she's like the serpent in the garden, or Sauron from the shadowed corners of Middle Earth.

And clearly, she has a beef with Ozpin too, so that's a constant. Everyone latched onto Oz's "I've made more mistakes than any man, woman or child" line for a reason - it tips off he may be responsible for some really bad shit; he may be the reason for all of it, and has spent all his lifetimes trying to fix them. It's not farfetched to believe the Grimm and Salem are a result of that - his darkest moment.

Now we're getting into the specifics, and that's where I don't really vibe well with the route canon has committed to: the angry ex-wife thing.

Now, I still think Salem being originally human and not an evolved Grimm is fine too. It's basically like Kerrigan from Starcraft - she's the Queen of the Grimm. I don't even mind her being a former lover - I've had discussions with a friend from my server and there's a lot of potential there if you present it a certain way:

While it does seem weird that the fate of the whole world lies on a single relationship between two people - RWBY is technically a very personal story. It's about individuals, about self-expression and the soul. So having the main conflict be focused around a human experience that becomes corrupted can still work - it's a very Star Wars approach to it: the entire film saga is centered around the Skywalkers.

It's likely that both of them, while deeply in love, had different ideas about immortality, about how the world to be, and they were the only two people powerful enough to put those ideals into action, so they came to blows, causing the landslide that created Remnant as we know it.

So really, there is a lot you can do with Salem if you applied yourself to it. But what we got is a vaguely diet Sauron-ish figure sitting in a creepy castle, like we're in a nondescript cookie-cutter JRPG setting.

Some of Salem's scenes do hit well, and I can only really credit the artists and Jen Taylor's solid performance for that, particularly scenes of her exuding a serene and otherworldly, yet intimate and almost motherly presence, like a whisper given form. More a voice than a person, more a presence than a form.

This was the Salem I think could have worked best with canon RWBY if they had stuck to it. Keep her a largely formless being whose mere voice compels madness and ruin, whose invisible hand has moved the pieces towards a single end.

It sort of reminded me of the one Mephala quest from Skyrim, an unassuming, dark voice beckoning from behind a humble, wooden door tucked in a corner most would overlook until one wanders too near, or rather... seeks it out. Another mentioned Xal'atath from WoW, who is an ancient evil bound in a weapon. All three performances sound incredibly similar too.

I sort of like the idea of Salem leaning more into this trope than the fully physical being we see in the show. Have her start out as this ancient influence, whispering in the ears of Hunters promising power, perhaps bestowing weapons cursed with Grimm-like energy that slowly eats away at them. Hey look, cursed weapons, almost like weapons are an important and recognisable aspect of RWBY, and the idea of an ancient evil possessing your rocket-powered katana assault rifle instead of just a sword or dagger would have been a novel take on this familiar trope.

Have her gain power and influence throughout the series, and if you ever feel like making your pale-faced dark lord mommy character to hit your arbitrary waifu quota, you can just justify it as "she's powerful enough to enter the material plane now" and call it done.

I think it's the things Salem creates that should evoke more physical fear. The weapons she's made. The progressively stronger, more vile abominations she can turn Grimm into. The way she can tug a few strings and turn entire nations against each other. Salem doesn't need to appear as more than a very well-performed voice and a wisp of black smoke or a glowing red eye to be scary. Her works can speak more to her power than any fight scene or rainbow beams from her hand possibly can.

Because maybe, Salem is someone you just can't fight. She's not a problem you can solve with violence, but instead of an immortal, super-powerful mage who realistically should have killed Remnant ten times over yet chooses not to, she has a reason to need pawns. Her influence is strong, but she needs vessels to carry out her will, i.e. Grimm and people like Cinder. Why play a game of chess with Ozpin for thousands of years when you could have just flipped the board over any time you wanted? When the only canonical inconvenience was waiting 20 minutes to an hour to regenerate, good as new?

At least with this depowered, more subtle portrayal of Salem, she still had to play by the rules. She still had to be the Black Queen the show loves to symbolise her as. But really, given enough time, Salem will no longer just be the Black Queen. She'll be the whole board. Playing Ozpin's own pieces against him. Adding pieces to herself. Expanding the playing field so she covers everything.

And she'll do all of this one well-placed turn at a time. To me, that sounds more like the kind of game an immortal would play. Not... bringing six or seven dudes to your moonlit villa (most of whom died either betraying you or being betrayed by the same group members), sitting on your throne for the past few centuries when you could have made a few giant whales in advance, marched into each Kingdom at any time and wiped out all opposition through sheer overwhelming brute force alone.

Canon Salem is mishandled in canon because she had all the power, time and Grimm to take the Relics the boring, straightforward way, but thinks she's too cunning and smart to resort to that, so she just... does it the hard, inefficient way instead, because that's what real, mastermind dark lord characters are supposed to do.

Jaune groaned as he felt the Salazzle sink her envenomed fangs into his shoulder. He was fuzzy on Alolan Pokémon, but he heard stories about Salazzle's leading male Salandit who were subservient to her. His personal conclusion was that Salazzle prefer to believe they were in charge, but after seeing this one so eagerly obeying Cinder's orders, it made him rethink this.

"Does it hurt?" Cinder asked, standing over him. Her voice cooed like a mother to her child. "I can make it stop." She frowned at him. "Just bring out your friend."

"I-" he grunted through the pain, "I don't know what you're talking about!"

"Midnight?" Her Salazzle kept her jaw shut. "Fire Lash."

Jaune screamed as an intense heat struck him across his shoulder lime a flaming whip. He pushed against Midnight, but she held firm, holding him down with her natural strength. He could tell she was enjoying his pain from the way her eyes glinted. He saw the same expression on a number of Pokémon as they played with their toys. And that was what he became now; this Pokémon's new toy.

He shut his eyes, wishing for the pain to stop. A loud CLANG had him open his eyes, watching as the Salazzle was struck in the face by a blur of solid metal. Crocea Mors had entered the battle.

Midnight scurried to her trainer's side, hissing at Jaune and Crocea Mors. Cinder sneered at the sudden arrival. Jaune found his way to his feet, pulling out a Pecha berry as a precaution. With a bite, he started feeling much better. Crocea Mors stood ready, a dangerous aura surrounding him.

"Be careful, Crocea Mors," Jaune warned, "she might be Poison-type, but she's also a Fire-type."

"Midnight," Cinder raised a finger at the two, "make him give up his Pokémon."

"Never." Jaune growled.

The two Pokémon charged at each other. Midnight held tight to Crocea Mors, hissing as she curled her claws. Crocea Mors, unable to shift to sword-mode, struggled in her grip.

"Midnight, use Toxic!" Dark purple venom oozed from her open maw at her master's order.

"Crocea Mors, Iron Defense!" His shield shone brighter as a light sheen coated his already impenetrable guard. Their foe was clearly an amateur if she ordered a Poison-type move against a Steel-type.

"Tell me, child," Cinder smirked, "have you ever been to the Alolan Islands?"

"Can't say I have, no." Jaune scowled.

"Well, did you know that Salazzle are the apex predators of their island?" Her smirk grew to a wicked smile. "In part due to their venom, which is potent enough-"

"Crocea Mors!" The Aegislash screeched in pain as the dark ooze burned across his metal exterior, it seeping into his core.

"-to melt through Steel-types. Salazzle, use Flamethrower!" Purple flames erupted from the Pokémon's maw onto Crocea Mors, his screeching growing louder. Cinder laughed at the pathetic display. This was the power Salem thought to be a threat? A child and his toy? "Ready to give up, and will your Pokémon suffer more?"

"NO!" Jaune rushed forward, into the battle. Just as Cinder planned. Nodding to Midnight, the Salazzle understood the order and released the Aegislash to grab the trainer. With claws splayed out, Midnight was ready to ensnare the boy. "LEAVE HIM ALONE!"

"Midnight, use Flamethrower!" Violet flames streamed into Jaune, making him roar in pain.

Her flames were weakened in the rain, but it would be more than enough to subdue the boy. Perhaps after this, he would become more cooperative. Jaune's body erupted into flames, the lavender embers lingering over his form as he fell forward.

His foot smashed into the wet soil, pushing him forward. He lept through the inferno, emerging with flames as blue as his eyes. He crashed into the Salazzle, tackling her to the ground. She screeched in pain, swiping at him with her claw. He took the blow, but continued stomping through his pain to attack again.

Midnight slithered out of his reach, leaving him to sink his leg into the soft earth. She hid behind her trainer, who sneered at her Pokémon.

"Pathetic." She tossed the black ball at Jaune, striking him in the face.

It opened like a Poké-Ball, but instead of red lights emerging from it's core, black webs struck out, sticking to Jaune. He shouted as the tar stuck more and more to him. He tried to run, but his leg was stuck in the ground. It struck his face, silencing his shouts of rage. Soon, his struggling lessened, then stopped.

Crocea Mors unsheathed his blade and struck the black evil from Jaune. He plunged his blade into the black ball, destroying both it and the evil attacking his charge. A sharp pain struck him, and he fell to the ground. The last thing he saw was the woman approaching Jaune, and the last thing he heard was a shrill cry.

Thanks for the ask, first off, and sorry I’ve taken a little to get back to you. This took me a bit to type up and I did it instead of working on more Phoenix stories lmao. I did end up getting a bit grouchy about Tai as a character, so fair warning, there’s a bit of critical content here; you can of course scroll right past it to get to the good stuff.

Probably my favourite thing about Raven x Taiyang is the fanfiction; it’s as you say, their relationship is never actually shown in the show, a ship that sunk well before it even sailed-which, fair. It’s not their show. But it still irritates me, because Raven was a character who immediately caught my interest on Youtube because she was hot, and then I watched those videos and I thought “oh wow this lady’s got some serious baggage”. That scene in V5, where Raven’s gaze drops from Yang to the ground and she breathes Tai’s name piqued my interest in that man a thousandfold, and then it turns out he’s…there. He’s been sitting on his ass at home, gardening and gawking the telly while his children fight in the forever war that he must have some idea of, if his glare to Qrow at the end of V3 meant anything. It’s been said before by others: Tai being the stay-at-home parent in an empty house makes no sense. It’s authorial intervention to make sure the protagonists didn’t curbstomp their way through the events of V4-5 with two veteran Huntsmen (sidenote, how cool would it have been if instead of doing nothing and getting left behind by the story, Tai had accompanied Yang to Raven? I mean, shit, if Raven had an out-of-body moment at the mere mention of her ex-husband what would his presence in those scenes have done? The angst! The drama! I AM LITERALLY PICTURING A SCENE IN WHICH Raven ushers them into the tent without a fight, she’s twiddling her thumbs like “aha well, you see…fuck” while Vernal is like “why…is she…OH YOU MUST BE TAI” and then Weiss breaks out of the cage and she’s wiping the floor with those tribal jobbers-and Raven turns to Tai and Yang while they have no idea what's going on, Yang’s instinctively stood up before Tai’s like “nah this sounds like a her problem” and Yang goes “oh yeahhhhh! Good luck bitch lmao”).

You ask what I don’t like about the ship. I’d argue there’s nothing to dislike, because there is practically nothing there, beyond the maddening tease of a handful of scenes that never amount to anything. What I do dislike are the characters as they are written in canon-Raven is hilariously incoherent (“Salem only uses people until they are no longer useful” “…Are you having a stroke” “Yes. Vernal get help”) and Tai is boringly incoherent. They make no sense and they reek of wasted potential.

But the fanfiction. The shit that fan writers get up to when they’re not being hemmed in by canon. <> I originally had a little list of recommendations written up, but on second thought I am unsure how comfortable those writers would be with getting mentioned in a post that is probably going to be tagged RWDE. So…rest assured, there’s some good shit out there, you just have to look. But my favourite one is a genfic that isn’t tagged Raven Branwen/Taiyang Xiao Long. So I’m sorry. <>

Aside from the fanfiction that started all this, I guess I’m also very fond of my own interpretation of Phoenix; think black cat golden retriever, except that the cat is a desperate thing and the dog is mangy as all hell, because I’ve said it before, I don’t like fanon STRQ-era fuckboy Tai. It’s nothing personal, I just don’t care for writing that kind of archetype. Canon Tai isn’t particularly interesting to me either. I consider him a narrative deadweight EXCEPT in the matter of how he relates to Raven, who is far and away the more compelling character to me (hopefully it doesn’t show in my writing, considering what I’m about to get into).

Writing Tai for me personally has been like constantly asking myself the question: Who did Raven Branwen fall in love with? My answer, and I guess parcelled with it the answer to your first question, about what I actually like about Phoenix, is that Raven fell in love with someone who was so unexpectedly like her-with all her rage and doubt and hurt-someone who has suffered, if not measure for measure, a life not unlike hers, and who yet despite it all is still holding out hope-is still fundamentally a good person. Life in the tribe broke that scared little girl-it made her solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Tai, on the other hand, drank his milk. With Tai, she doesn’t get the excuse of ‘life was shitty to me so I’m dealing it back’; he sees her, and Raven likewise, because to their mutual shock and rage, they’re looking into a mirror.

I know opposites attract is and probably always will be in romantic vogue, but I like to think that that trope is only the superficial appearance of Phoenix. I imagine them initially enraged by each other, barely able to breathe in the same room without scoffing or making some biting joke (more often than not Raven instigating, Tai retaliating). As the seasons change, rage cools to resignation, and a kind of morbid curiosity sets in. From Raven’s perspective: Why are you like this? Where do you find the will to care? I need to know. From Tai’s: Why are you like this? Can I help you? I want to help. Them working their way from a tentative ceasefire to a comfortable peace; days and days gone without a backbiting that feels so petty and pointless to them now-or if it persists, everyone can feel that there’s no more heat to it. They’re together more often than they’re not-they’re the only people that can pull each other back from the brink, that can realise that the ever-mediative Tai or the taciturn Raven was even there. One blazing day in spring, the sun is on her skin and his hands are in her hair and her mind can only stutter out a double ‘Oh’ before their lips brush and it occurs to her that even if she runs now, she’ll stay. So for a brief and blessed time, she stays, whole, taking an anxious, guilty pleasure in this life that she hates she doesn’t hate. Even after everything she’s done, maybe she has a right to life too. Coming home every day to a home she’s never known-he smells like timber and stock, roses and earth. He’s warm when she’s cold, he’s kind to her when she’s cruel to herself-he holds her as the setting sun washes them in rosegold and she hopes.

And then Yang is born. It’s hardly her fault-for the first week or so, Raven loves her. But the creep of post-partum depression exacerbates all that old rage and doubt and hurt. She’s angrier than usual and she doesn’t know why. Why is she here? She’s killed dozens of men like Tai before-good men, fathers. She’s killed the occasional scrawny kid who fought back, who decided their mementos were worth more to them than their shitty lives. And she gets to be a mother? One day she looks at Yang and she’s just. Disgusted. She’s disgusted by her, and suddenly she’s terrified by herself. She’s going to get someone killed. Well, she can do that somewhere else.

Tai left to father Yang, alone. Raven in the thick of her PPD, making a name for herself across Anima. Nodding until her head hurts when she’s sober and her mind is drawn home. Yes, she made the right choice.

And then the lift of that awful fog. Just as she’s earned the title of ‘Bandit Queen’ it feels worse than meaningless. What the fuck is she doing? Where’s Tai, where’s Yang? Stumbling through that portal. She left them without a damn thing, what was she expecting? They look happy together. She won’t ruin that for them, not again. She staggers back through the portal, heart still rotting in that old home.

Years and years and years passing, letting this new wound scab and scar but it still stings, the worst mistake she’ll ever pay for. Every night, tired eyes to the tent roof, wondering what the look on Tai’s face would be if she cut a path to him right now. She twists, he turns, they grasp at nothing and laugh at jokes half-remembered in the dark. He misses the person he used to be. She doesn’t. She wishes she’d been better.

My favourite thing about Raven x Taiyang is all the shit I made up about them. As for the music!

Going in chronological order of the progression of the relationship, I love to imagine Perfect Pair as a mood for Raven and Tai in their prime. A love unconditional, trusting the other to hold their heart in their hands without breaking it. This followed by the super-sentimental Herz über Kopf (Heart over Head), Raven fighting all the torturous insecurities she has about her right to this life. Two optimistic songs, followed by the steel chair of Tek It to the face, Tai trying to shrug off the betrayal, Raven more than faintly ashamed. This to be emphasised by Out of My League, as a song from her perspective after it finally, really hits her what she’s done. And conclude with Show Me How, a song I reckon perfectly encapsulates the sense of lost love that is radiated by these absolutely miserable, mourning, yearning people. 😊

About this whole “how we can have character development when we have Big War Plot going on, we need separate vol for this thing!” in a little bit different way.

When there's a chance that today will be the last day when you can sit and breathe quietly without worrying about anything, or even that you're minutes away from having to be in a stressful situation - there is a lot can happens outside of "losses and plans". You can read a stories about people having some quiet moments - people got new friends, new familus and love in the middle of war. You and your life can change dramatically in times of war one way and another. (like listen.......me before february 2022 and me after february 2022 is a two different people. This is all what i will say about it...). 

You can have your character “breath for a second” (and no, make character “drink tea” in vol8 was not the way to make character “progress”) You have a whole big emotion situation right now that every character can react on it in one way and another.

We even (kinda) HAVE a characters moments or some sort of "character development" that not fully about Salem, but about characters in war or they stories. Some characters stories have connection with "EVIL WITCH" storyline, some of them have just personal problem stuff that they have to deal with it. Ironwood arc, Ren and Nora emotions and relationship, Penny whole character in vol7 (with a little bit Winter), whole Ace-Ops...thing, and other characters stories and things that dont have or have connection with “big story” but CAN have something with it, outside of just “we need to get this”. We will not speak right now about how good or bad those moments was done, just…you CAN do this. With start, middle and end and not just one of those parts. And you dont need to sabotage a whole plot for sake of the main cast having character development.

But there we are. In series that have pretty reaction type of writing when fucking characters cant have reaction on ANY stressful situations. Series that have separate season for main cast character development, that mean nothing and telling us that The Big Bad Witch and A whole ass WAR was never a problem for having characters develop or “we have 100 characters in the show” or “we have restrict budget so we can have only what we have” was not that big justification why we cant have the main characters react on things, reflect or progress.

Why have a story for character when you can have a moment, a one scene that you can watch unconnected from the series. A cool gif or screenshot that maybe work in vacuum, “if you dont think about this too much - its working!” Or just dont show it at all, all off screen or in you homework material or in separate material, that was "not canon until it IS a canon". Or just headcanon this. You cant just let character progress and react and reflect on stuff, right? Just look how cool look this new location or how sweet this moment was animate and dont think about this too much, baby.

Im seeing a lot of posts lately about our Wardens being the strongest of our characters and i agree, my Modi would destroy Hawke and Aesus by throwing his axe in their forehead before thinking about the consequences but i think we need to address how much some of them would SUCK in the other games...

maybe not everyone play the same way but my warden Brosca would be SO BAD as an inquisitor like WTF is the fade ?? Demons ??? Green vagina on my hand ??? And he would be awful at politics because he would just kill everyone..oh and he would probably try to kill Cassandra during the prologue and either get killed by the inquisition immediatly or later while running away because no way Brosca is trusting anyone with that shit on his hand and in the sky. And i feel all Brosca, Tabris, Mahariel and probably Amell/Surana would be the same ? Because the system fucked them over their whole lives and/or they have no understanding of the world outside their bubble/survival mode ??

My purple/red Hawke would probably manage to become inquisitor but he would also suck at it because he would not take anything seriously and use his influence to make his malewife Anders some kind of new sexy andraste and would just start a war with every Chantry related country for all the blasphemy he would do by using the Herald of andraste card..so, iconic, but Corypheus would probably win with all those political distractions tbh..

Also Hawke is the only one to not have that "war " type of skills ? Like the warden is good at fighting an army and so is the Inquisitor 

Hawke is amazing but against the Kirkwall thugs and one shot invasions maybe ? They are powerful but have 0 discipline to fight in a war imo 

same thing for Hawke as the Warden i think they would be bad at that war thing and they would make really impulsive choices and make a lot of people angry. And they would obviously fuck the whole crew. It could work tho i think they could save the world of the blight but everyone would be so pissed to have to call that clown a hero. Or they would just run away while Alistair is not looking and never come back.

I think maybe the Inquisitor could be not so bad in the Warden's role in theory because i could see each of them ( Adaar, Lavellan..) agreeing to follow Duncan, and they're both good at fighting a fucked up super evil army and doing difficult choices in the moment. I think depending on your Oc personnality it could be really funny to have your inquisitor in da:o but it's so specific i will let that to your imagination ( and i would love to know how your oc would do in this situation PLEASE TELL ME )

But the Inquisitor and the Warden in Kirkwall ?? Depending on your race and choices ?? Oh my god ?? My Adaar would just get fucked by everyone like he is good at being a mercenary but would be so bad in the streets 

and even if you're good at it can you imagine a qunari with his apostates/lyrium infused angry elf and all those criminal friends ?? During the Qunari invasion thing ?? He would just get killed by the people i think like a Salem witch

And for all the non human characters i feel that because everyone already hates you and there is no way you could become a noble you would probably just kill all the bad guys immediatly without having to be carefull politically or you would just never get involved because why would the vicount ask for your help if you're a qunari ?? So no way a non human inquisitor/warden could last 7 years in this city, it would be a lot more violent and faster

Also the warden would have blew up the Chantry themselves.
