happy 2024. yall still have to suffer my rants. sorry

so i think everyone remembers that period from 2015 to 2021 or maybe later, when everyone was creaming themselves over the dead horse scenario of “wHaT iF the NaZiS wOn ThE wAr”

yeah i aint gonna go into specifics but im pretty sure everyone remembers. mostly because of what they wrote with superman.

god people need to stop milking this shit.

so I’ve gone into detail in other posts about how dc is notoriously flimsy and escapist with the subject of nazi germany and just…nazism in general, either they’ll just use it as a vehicle to virtue signal or they straight up deny its horrors. yeah, sad but true. same with this.

except there was someone (obviously non-dc affiliated) who actually got the superman scenario right. not grant morrison, venditti and every other weirdo who had their fingers in this literal dumpster fire. kim newman, who wrote “ubermensch” in 1991, before “red son” and the other superman alternate histories, and showed more empathy for the holocaust and the victims of nazi germany than dc could ever care to.

because. unlike dc, newman wasn’t running on propaganda tradition and cutesy escapism like they were.

so right off the bat it’s obvious that newman knows his history. the story takes place in a recently reunified postwar germany at the end of the cold war. metropolis is analogous to berlin, it’s a famous city in-story that was split into an east and west sector. the main character is avram blumenthal, a holocaust survivor turned nazi hunter, much like the real life simon wiesenthal. the superman analogue in this story is held in spandau prison, the real-life facility for nazi war criminals where rudolf hess was imprisoned for the remainder of his life.

just by looking at that. you could never find a dc writer who puts in this much time and effort to research the past and depict it in a non exploitative manner.

there’s also some commentary on western us capitalism/consumerism that defined ‘our’ progress in the cold war (pizza hut and mcdonalds in the ussr anyone) and the “third position” of fascism being the “alternative” between capitalism and communism:

and! newman actually respects superman’s jewish mythos! he includes it in here, which is something i’ve never seen the overman writers do. jerry siegel and joe shuster were both jewish. and, no matter what dc tells you about nazis having ‘superheroes’ of their own, this was actually one of the reasons comics were hated in nazi germany.

newman also integrates the basic superman lore pretty well here, everything is recognizable. a ‘man of steel,’ ‘the man of tomorrow,’ ‘curt kessler’ (which, by the way, is way more creative than dc’s ‘karl kant’) is clark kent, the ‘green stuff’ is kryptonite, so on

newman also isn’t afraid to get dirty with the mythos, unlike the comics which like to play it safe with this (up to and including never talking about the holocaust at all). the johnathan and martha kent analogues of “ubermensch” aren’t the kindly couple that they should be. because this isn’t them and we're not supposed to like them. johann beats his adopted son and curt grows up arrogant. luise lang, the lois analogue, is a snotty propagandist that curt describes in ideologically typical misogynistic terms (another thing to note down dc, nazis did not respect women) who commits suicide to avoid being raped by the red army.

there's also something else that's interesting, the commentary on how harmful propaganda and journalism can be when serving a purpose. its implied a lot in here that the 'supervillains' that curt kessler/übermensch faces are actually all staged by the nazis, or if they're genuine (like the golem), their intentions are twisted to serve the bigger narrative.

curt kessler/übermensch is a state propagandist like luise lang was. the 'tages welt,' daily planet analogue in this story, sounds a lot like a version of der sturmer. he writes his own propaganda narratives to prop up his übermensch persona and vilifies innocent people in the process. the targets of nazi ideology get the names of villains from 1920s german fiction and they're like dogwhistles in itself if you know the context. "orlok" was a vampire that looked uncomfortably similar to anti-semitic caricatures, "mabuse" was a hypnotist "master of disguise" who "operated through a network of agents," characters co-opted and then twisted by nazism in-story. in real life we also have this with racists adopting "sh****k" as a slur from the shakespeare character.

newman also throws a curveball with that whole ‘nazi superhero who actually turns out to be good all along’ or whatever the shit that trope is. whatever. kessler apparently ‘defects,’ like he says here

but before that, he said this.

dude’s the same. sorry guys, no redemption arc here. this becomes relevant later.

kessler still blames "mabuse" for pornography, jazz, cabarets, things that defined progressive weimar germany before the nazis took over and shut it all down. again. another aspect taken from real-life history. and since a "red skull" is also name-dropped here, i'm also thinking that the "hydra" reference in this refers to the marvel organization of the same name.

you know. the one with tentacle iconography, the secret society that's framed in the mcu as controlling the world, starting wars and infiltrating governments everywhere to install global totalitarianism. which makes me wonder what kind of writers at marvel thought nazi germany would accept an organization that exemplifies the kind of fake "international conspiracy" they were railing against but that's another conversation. see here.

blumenthal recalls a time when he was a child in germany who naively hero-worshipped kessler/übermensch because of the propaganda around him. he wished he could fly and he wore a black blanket like a cape. while he was young a rabbi created a golem (the figure in jewish mythology made of clay) who was killed by kessler, and blumenthal swallowed the propaganda. even when his anti-semitic classmates aped kessler and beat him up.

kessler obviously doesn’t give a shit, he’s still brainwashed no matter how he tries to wave it off. he doesn’t care about the tattoo. instead he talks about using his x-ray vision to look at women’s breasts. like real-life racists confronted with their own wrongdoings kessler also resorts to whataboutism and goes “your family is dead but so is my whole planet”.

and he also says he’s only locking himself up because of his guilt. not actually over the atrocities of nazism. it’s that nazi germany is gone and so is his planet so he has nothing else to do and he doesn’t want to do anything. that’s it.

blumenthal retorts with this, which is just great in itself. im not going to outline it, newman does it pretty good already

this is one of the things i really liked. because it’s important and more importantly, relevant!! it’s so relevant because kim newman is fucking right. im reiterating that everything about the world in that second image is true.

i was a kid when charlottesville happened. tmi but that whole time is a blur. when i got older and learned about things, i remember thinking that maybe after that, we would take a good hard look at ourselves and just try to find out where we went wrong.

did we maybe have a history of being eugenicist slaveowning imperialists in the past who inspired nazi polices and still rallied around the flag and the military. did racism and nazism happen to run deep in america before 2017.

why were children and young adults so vulnerable and still are vulnerable to the alt-right pipeline, what are we putting out in media that could be desensitizing them to nazism. what kind of message are we sending when we don’t cover it in detail, and leave them to figure out nazism from shitty comics, or movies.

yeah. the majority of people ever asked that.

here’s what they actually did. especially in art and media, and im going to say, with dc since this is relevant to the image. they doubled down on some of the societal shit that led to that in the first place

you wanna know what the cw, bunch of braindead idiots, did right after charlottesville? pretty much the entire thing from the last paragraph, except with some vanilla bullshit because of course the arrowverse can’t ever portray nazism correctly even if they tried.

there’s an article that covers their failure in detail and also a reddit post which, obviously, some weirdos in the comments are brushing off. and it’s also not coincidental that a comic series came after this and cited the political climate. again. a bunch of important dc people were involved in promoting this. phil jimenez in particular also has a problematic history with depicting modern neo-nazism. grown adults put money into this. their actors and their fans supported them.

mmm. alright smart guy. here’s that “different set of ideals” for you.

yeah, apparently they didn’t think through the consequences of a world where the fucking dirlewanger brigade would be celebrated as heroes.

you know what they actually cared about? some fucking stupid comic issue from the 1970s that was suddenly relevant because everyone felt the need to deny our own nazi-sympathizing rotten history and pin it somewhere else, rather than actually take a step back and evaluate where we went wrong as a society.

and actually they essentially made radicalization easier. they showed this bullshit to kids and basement-dwelling adults who don’t know anything about the world and only care about their typical comic high. how do they fucking sleep at night knowing that they’ve whitewashed real life atrocities?

they still are doing that. they casually throw around the words “hitler” and “nazi” to the point where it fucking means nothing. they’re using exploitative images of concentration camps just to get a rise out of people without ever covering their themes seriously. and you wanna know the worst thing about that? only a few people are calling this out. everyone else? nah they’re ready to consume that because it doesn’t matter to them like it does for some people.

in the story blumenthal believes that, without kessler existing, the ‘fire’ won’t start up again. this comes when nazism and genocidal neo-fascism are resurging and the israel bit is also pretty relevant today. like in real life the kids are ignorant because all they know about nazi germany and world war ii is from kessler. again. this man is a living symbol of nazism who has media getting made about him.

blumenthal’s right. because the world actually doesn’t need kessler and it’s better off without him. he passes a kryptonite suicide pill encased with lead, which kessler can bite through. and he gives him a choice.

living swastika kessler who has nothing to live for and is more of a problem than an actual help to humanity, bites the pill and kills himself. that’s it. he dies. his only worthwhile achievement is sucking it up and dying like a human man.

he’s dead. now finally humanity can start to heal.

so to round it all off basically. i think this book is part of a lesson. about swallowing that bitter pill that you don’t want to face and realizing, maybe there’s something problematic how we portray and in a way, whitewash nazism to the population through the comic industry. because the golden age, nobody actually knew about the holocaust when they were writing the whole “punching nazis” schtick. the comics were wartime, jingoistic and often racist propaganda.

and yet!! we’re still doing it. thanks to some escapist tradition that actually does more harm than good. because we actually know about the holocaust, we have the internet and the ability to push ourselves to research. and we don’t. and i think tbh, that is much worse. that the people with money and platforms just don’t care.

it’s in other media too, mostly movies.

chaplin got it right, he said he would’ve never made the great dictator if he knew about the final solution like we did today.

spielberg couldn’t include nazis in indiana jones after making schindler’s list and im pretty sure he said he disowned it, but. it looks like everyone decided to shit on that because of nostalgia.

jojo rabbit was originally adapted from a novel where the protagonist was an unrepentant scumfuck HJ who gaslit, controlled and raped the jewish woman hiding in his house. and for some reason, people hate the novel. why? because it rightfully doesn’t give them the cozy feelgood feeling that the film did. it rightfully portrays a brainwashed child who never got out, was never interested in getting out and grew up to be, you guessed it, a fucking nazi. those jojo rabbit viewers were actually looking forward to this before they got the hard reality. who the fuck in their right mind would ever consider nazism ‘feelgood’?

and i think that’s another thing we need to get in our heads especially with radicalization. tw isis execution being brainwashed as a kid is not funny, it’s not childish or anything to make fun of, and it’s nothing to make a wes anderson movie about. you are being exploited and taken advantage of by people who know you’re angry about things beyond your control and they are molding you and you believe everything. and the ensuing trauma if you ever get out, ends up being a bitch because your brain was still developing and now it sticks for the rest of your life. yeah try taking that in, taika.

so. by all means. wise up and kill the living swastikas wherever you find them. it could be anything, but. get rid of it. because we are going to be so fucked up as humanity otherwise.

hello hello i am return from a deep dive into several reference materials that assumed a little bit more knowledge about how Medieval Latin works than i actually have, but, it was all exTREMEly inch resting to me. i am absolutely not a historian but here we are, a speedrun of my pinballing around trying to ensure that I know what the fuck im storing in my type corridor:

so 16th Cent. Roman, i already knew, was a font Paul Duensing designed based on this incomplete set of old Italian punches he acquired (punches, the first step of old school typecasting, where you carve the relief letter shape into the end of a stick of steel, and you uuuh punch that into the copper matrix, which is then the negative mould-shape you use to cast multiple copies of the lead sorts with hot metal; surviving punches are precious artifacts not the least because they are. they’re hand-carved!! often by the type designer themselves. historical and also wildly cool craftsmanship). these punches were all beat up and probably water damaged, fucky and rough-edged, so he re-did and filled in the gaps in the alphabet with similarly styled letters of his own. very cool. an extremely nerdy lil passion project of a typecaster in the 1960s, very typical of type people. we all find a Thing to obsess over, and sometimes it's reviving an incomplete set of punches from the 1500s that you found in, idk, it's usually a bucket in somebody's basement.

anyway it's got a bunch of ligatures and the long s, sure sure sure, but WHAT are all these gibberish characters with tildas and lines thru the stems of ps and qs and such—

Duensing's full font is in Mac McGrew's specimen book, great, i have that, except McGrew's book has complete proofs and a little bit of history for each font but doesn't always cover what each symbol in a unique alphabet is for, and i knew just enough about Latin to guess that they were abbreviations but not what each of them stood for. a little bit of searching got me this far, which is to say, "Abbreviation in Medieval Latin Paleography," a translation of an Italian essay on the subject from 1929. It is prefaced by the translators with gems like: "Take a foreign language, write it in an unfamiliar script, abbreviating every third word, and you have the compound puzzle that is the medieval Latin manuscript." Scribes writing in medieval Latin just tossed out letters they didn't care to deal with, constantly, and had stand-in special characters and abbreviations for syllables/words/particles and there were intuitive rules but way too many variations in time and place and person to make a reasonably-sized, static lexicon. amazing. hope all u paleographers are having fun over there.

the essay has a great big glossary of truncations and abbreviations and so on which clearly cover most of the figures in Duensing's font:

ok! BUT this q with a little swoop off the end kept bugging me!! for all these dead-use symbols this essay is using handwritten samples, obviously, and there's clearly variation in execution and also typographers take liberties, and i just thought, sure my piece of type looks a lot like the quod here but it does link the staff to the swoop where the handwritten sample doesn't, and it could just as well be a fanciful ligature for qn which apparently can stand in for quando, and i have no idea which is a more common-use syllable likely to be cast in the font if you're only going to pick your top 14, and i just like to be sure about things.

SO. i went to double-check with Johnson’s Typographia. Johnson made like a thousand pages of printing manuals set in tiny tiny type in the 1820s which are rad as hell and tell you all sorts of things about how to run a shop and build your own press and cast type and going rates for work and employment and also, the alphabets/type case layout for whatever language or symbol set you might have to set type in, when handsetting type was mostly the only way to get stuff printed—English, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, musical notation, astronomical signs, aaaand it’s got a section for "Marks & characters used in the Domesday Book & other ancient records.”

and WHAT is a Domesday contraction, WELL, it's a contraction specifically from/prevalent in the Domesday book, a deeply boring and historically important tome about property distribution in England. It’s literally a survey. who owned what, in 1086. presumably mind-numbing. enormous, handwritten in Medieval Latin, EXTREMELY cool, go look at some images of it at least, very important to historians, economists, linguists, and a complete pain in the ass to set in type when that technology became available, having to cast any significant proportion of these variant characters in an alphabet. Johnson says, (in 1824) “It is an improvement of latter years only*, to have type cast to resemble the abbreviations used in the more ancient manuscripts; they being formerly rudely imitated, either from a common fount, or else were cut in wood for the purposes of any particular work.” wow that sucks. but in 1773 the government really wanted to be able to reproduce the Domesday Book in type, so a couple people tried to cut a set of punches for Domesday abbreviations and Joseph Jackson got it done and it only took 10 years to print an edited version of the manuscript. and then apparently all the type was destroyed in a fire in 1808. WOW that sucks.

but the point is, Johnson has a great big glossary of characters as they were translated into type in the making of the printed Domesday Book, and the Domesday punches were used or refrenced in the printing of other medieval latin works, which consequences a degree of standardization in the abbreviations used in those versions of the text that handwritten manuscripts never had or needed.

notably the Domesday quod looks even more different from my piece of type here which was pretty annoying, so what are the chances this thing is a quando, and anyway that's when my sister texted me back with better computer skills and a different search engine and found me a perfect match on the first try. it’s a quod. this National Diet Library digital exhibition has several different sample fonts, both black letter and roman, with quite consistent letter forms, if not choices about which abbreviations to bother casting.

*I don’t……exactly know what he means by this, since Gutenberg and contemporaries absolutely did cast many Medieval Latin abbreviations for their fonts nearly 400 years before this. His dismissal of “from a common fount” might be fair, since i think what he means by it is that you’d have a generic set of abbreviation characters which you would have to use in conjunction with whatever font was the main body of your text, and it’s messy to mix things that weren’t designed specifically to match. he may just mean that it’s new for his contemporary foundries to be casting all these expanded alphabets of abbreviations; Gutenberg didn’t have foundries to buy from and made his own type. he could include as many characters as he had the patience for. maybe Johnson is just a guy from the 1800s that didn’t have the internet and i shouldn’t jump down his throat for not knowing something. idk!! i have homework.

i’ve been aching to commentate spirit phone’s commentary for ages. glad i finally got around to it, this was an ejoyable experience. liveblog below the cut

-i'm like half certain i've heard this commentary before. maybe not the whole way through & it was probably actual years ago

-nice hearing stuff like this. in-depth personal view of the album-making process. makes it seem like more of a real thing i could do myself someday

-i could probably go real in depth about neil cicierega/tally hall parallels specifically concerning like. the arc of their musical careers. but i won't, here

-i love hearing musical artists, especially neil cicierega, talking about the meanings of their songs. like, not only has this song been claimed to hell & back by the tumblr gays, but with later ones i just can't see where he gets these ideas from. also, claiming there's any one meaning or plot to a song just seems silly to me

-shoutout to neil reusing a midi from like, 1998, that he made at 12 years old, whose entire melody was reused for the main verses of everybody loves raymond. loved finding that out on my own 2 years ago. now it's common trivia in this fandom. not bad times

-anyway. newest update on the loolin not realizing a song's funky time signature front: i think this one's in 6/4. or at least switches a lot between time signatures. granted i dont listen to it very often for the reasons stated above

-see the way neil describes it. eldritch horror upon being visited by the unknown at a time when humanity'd hadn't even yet had a chance to imagine such a thing occurring. should be right up my alley. but the sound itself & many of the lyrics simply turn me away.

-must i specify i don't dislike it? spirit phone is neil's best album it not being my favorite doesn't mean i think it's bad yadda yadda nobody should be surprised by this it's not like anyone in these fandoms reads my liveblogs <3

-granted i think this is. the first bit of spirit phone content i've made on my blog ever. so who knows things can change <3

-the transitions in spirit phone are much less view-monster transition tracks & more extended outros. view-monster's were a bit more intro than outro sure but they also seemed directed upon making a 2-way rather than 1-way bridge between tracks. or something like that

-.............soft fuzzy man is an incredible nickname for a cat. i'd steal that if i werent afraid of introducing my relatives to lemon demon

-an underlying metaphor is good enough. the literal side of the lyrics are fun. nothing but agreement here neil my good man

-what the hell does "a sense of intent" mean

-i've never heard rush before however i disagree with neil's understanding of 6/4. 6/4 is meant to have emphasis (onbeat or another term i can't remember) on the 1st & 4th beat of every measure, which is greatly different from a measure of 4/4 then a measure of 2/4. it's why his 5/4 always sounds weird, because while it's recognizable in sequences of 10/4, it's more 2 measures of 4/4 with one of 2/4 tacked on the end. that's also how it's different from 3/4. i don't know much music theory but what i do understand i will fight to the death about

-"canonized" that's. a very interesting term to use when referring to a former president

-from now on i will interpret every love song directed at some unseen "you" to be inviting me to marry them for tax purposes. thanks neil for being an aromantic icon

-ah hell yes hell yes man-made object is my favorite goddam song on this album

Nearly 80% of the fandom rated chapter 133 as good or great. In comparison with most SnK chapters, that’s on the low side. Since this was yet another set up chapter it’s possible that the fandom is waiting to see what payoff there will be before they throw their full support behind the developments introduced this month.

Great start to the end

There were a lot of contrived moments here on the first read but I'm hopeful things will play out in an unexpected way.

One of the better recent chapters, felt well paced and most of the dialogue and events seemed logical and fitting. Nice to see one more location added to the AOT world before the end.

I’ve been doing polls for almost 30 chapters now, this is the first where I have no chapter rating, I need to see how all this plays out before I decide if I love it or hate it.

All of this self-reflection is annoying. Though that feeling is just more because of the fact that waiting a whole month for another ‘these hands have killed’ chapter is not exciting when we are so close do the end and I just want to see the ending already.

Average as fuck, the intention is good but the execution is not it, and the dialogues feel very forced and repetitive.

Not good at connecting the narrative plot points 'cause there's...hundreds of them at this point but I'm here for the character interactions and to see just what the hell that "See you, Eren" from the beginning actually meant

Good but I worry about the pacing, some of this should have came earlier, will wait to see what comes from it.

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT 1,379 responses

Looks like a lot of people were glad to see that this conflict will not be resolved with a little heart-to-heart (34.9%). People also loved seeing child Eren being spooky with his new pal Ymir (18.8%). 11% liked seeing Eren’s friends reach out to him – or at least try. 9.4% liked Levi, because Levi. Connie, Jean, and Reiner sharing a moment of understanding warmed 8.6% of your hearts. 5.6% were happy to see Falco and Gabi brainstorming, and seeing Mr. Leonhart being a badass was the favorite moment for 3.6%.

I don’t know how it didn’t come up in this survey that Levi called Armin COMMANDER. That was my favorite moment by far. I also enjoyed the confirmation of Levi still caring about Eren. He always uses Zeke as a scapegoat. I somewhat feel bad for monke.

It was tough for me to decide a favorite moment from this chapter because every scene in this one was awesome. That's how fantastic of a chapter it was! I guess the only issue for me is the possibility of the Flying Titan actually becoming a reality when it felt too good to be true, but looking back, I think there was some foreshadowing to this becoming a reality.

Multiple select charts aren’t the prettiest but we like to think they do a good job of showcasing what the fandom thinks on a topic. While none of the options this month reached any sort of consensus, they do provide a snapshot of what we want and expect from Eren.

Of the items offered, only “I’m glad Eren was firm and there will likely be no Talk no Jutsu” reached 50%. The other more popular choice were “I’m surprised Eren reached out to them instead of the other way around” (41%), “THAT PATHS STUFF IS STILL SO COOL” (38.8%) and “I’m glad so many were able to talk to him and it wasn’t just EMA” (33%).

The more negative options, ‘Eren was unnecessarily cruel, his friends deserve better”(13.8%), “I’m mad that Eren is letting them fight him. It’s like he wants to lose” (10.6% ) and “I don’t like Eren dismissing the possibility of talking” (8.1%) received only a fraction of support.

it looks like Eren is committed to HIS path, which backs his friends into a really tough corner. I can't say I'm surprised; we've seen it coming since they got to the ocean, we just didn't want to believe it.

I really wish Eren would stop the rumbling. He had done more than enough.

Eren's speech, didn't feel like him talking. It was way too typical, he used his catchphrases way too many times. This could be done on purpose for an in-story actual reason, but if it wasn't, i'm not a fan of it. The alliance talking about the colossal being able to defeat eren, makes me think armin won't be able to. I think Armin and Reiner still don't understand Eren's intentions, i fully think he does not want to be stopped. Eren is going to try to kill all of them.

I love Eren dialogues. I just loved the chapter and paths scene so much. Quality character development!!

The attempts at talking to Eren were almost a character rorschach test as each individual brought up what was closest to their hearts in an effort to stop the rumbling. While none of their pleas impacted Eren, we were curious which one the fandom enjoyed most. Levi’s promise of an ass kicking (32.5%) was the favorite, distantly followed by Mikasa’s more impassioned “Let us share your burdens” (24.9%).

Look man, I'm an Eremika shipper and all but I really wish Mikasa didn't go on her usual "I'm here for you Eren" spiel in paths. It felt a little forced, and this would've been a good arc to have some more upfront and major changes as to how Mikasa sees Eren, but to get that usual "100% devotion" Mikasa that we've seen all series after we got signs that she's changed how she sees Eren was kind of disappointing.

It seems to be another month of Isayama dangling Eren’s motivations in front of us, though this time we got some substance in the form of some surprising words to the alliance. The most popular interpretation is the straightforward one (30.1%), that it’s as Eren says and he is genuine in not wanting to step on his friends’ freedom. Up next is people who support Reiner’s hypothesis of Eren wanting somebody to stop him (21.2%), with decreasingly popular choices being Eren wants to be killed only after the rumbling is complete (15.5%), he’s just continuing his daily “freedom” spiel (12.4%), and he’s confident in the alliance’s inability to stop him (11.6%). Many opted for the write in option to share their original theories (5.6%).

Eren is in the darkest part of his mind and wants to die. However, his obession with freedom is strong, so he keeps moving foward and won't allow his friends to just kill him without fight.

Child Eren appears again in this chapter, but now resembling Ymir even more. About half of the fandom thinks that the shaded out eyes is a sign of loss of free will. The other popular option, at 42.1% is that they’re depicted at the age they first got their titan powers. The idea that their eyes symbolize ignorance and that their child form symbolizes immaturity each got about 16%, and 10.5% of fans think Yams drew it this way just to look cool.

Alliance POV. They cannot understand Eren/Ymir, therefore their eyes (=windows to the soul) are obscured. Note that Ymir's eyes gradually got clearer from Eren's POV as he humanized her.

People seem to think Eren would hesitate the most with Mikasa and Armin, and hesitate the least with Pieck and Reiner, with the others falling into various middle positions, as the chart shows. Levi is being healed by the coordenate. Ackerman's blood is "half titan" so he must have recovered because of that just like titans do.

Armin, leader of the uphill battle against Eren, is the runner-up at 26.5%. 18.6% think the answer is no one – presumably because Eren will either wipe ‘em all out, or be the one to decide his own fate. 13.5% think Reiner will be the one, he is the same as Eren after all. But everyone is the same nowadays, so who knows?

Levi suggests to the alliance that instead of ending Eren’s life to stop the rumbling, they could opt to kill the man previously called the key to the Founder, Zeke. Only 4.2% of people agree that this would help in stopping the rumbling, with the most popular response at 41.8% being it would fail due to Eren having full control of the Founder. The belief that Zeke’s death would have alternatively disastrous consequences is also popular, with 27.8% thinking Ymir’s presence would allow the titans’ advancement to continue, and 26.2% expecting the lack of command over the titans would render them mindless, but still functioning.

So many revelations! The most controversial ones are Falco potentially becoming a flying titan, him getting Zeke’s memories, and the Female Titan powers; though more people are ok with each of these than not. Eren letting his friends continue to use titan powers, and the Beast Titan being multiple animals are the most accepted developments.

The idea of a flying titan is forceful and too convenient. I wonder how Isayama will draw it and not make it look like something odd.

Someone had thought about the beast titan animal theory before, since there was a giant horse at those old "paintings" that tell the story about eldia in marley's perspective, it is in chapter 87 i think, when grisha's parents are lecturing him.

The falco thing is too forced. The beast titan being any animal isn’t that forced but it should’ve been revealed waaay before, not in the same chapter as this whole falco flying thing.

As set up in that chapter, 44.8% were most happy to see Mr. Leonhart continuing to be a boss, while 33.6% were most hyped for another great double spread of the rumbling, as we’ve gotten for the last 4 chapters. Mr. Finger and the Brauns' concern for the children came in after that, followed by Karina and the Grices.

If Falco's cloud memories end up being child-Eren's view from last chapter, that would be incredible. So many characters will seemingly play an important role now that I have no idea what will happen next.

Reiner keeps thinking that the dialogue is about their guilt and since they are the same, then Eren wants to kill himself. But one of Eren's main statements is that he keeps moving forward despite everything (and he thinks Reiner is the same). I think Reiner's ""Eren wants us to fight him because he wants to die"" will be proven wrong, and he'll come to the correct conclusion in the end.

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a Falco should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The Falco, of course, flies anyway because Yams don't care what nerds think is impossible.

I don't mind the "inconsistencies", because most of what people are complaining about is just nitpicking that doesn't have much of anything to do with the story being told. I just hope that we're done with setup and can finally get to the final battle next chapter.

Everybody in this chapter was admitting their sins, but Bert still wasn't mentioned when so far he's the biggest elephant in the room when it comes to Reiner / AMJC. They watched Armin devour Bert and felt nothing about it, they participated in a terrorist attack against Liberio and threw a party instead/didn't protest against it, but the moment they betrayed their countries and slaughtered their comrades, suddenly they're evil sinners. It really feels iffy as shit.

Eren should finish what he started, I actually support him, I do understand his anger, his past anger, and everything that has been done to the Paradis Island. The only way to stop the exterior world’s way they think about them, is killing them all (or nearly), otherwise it’s never going to stop. It would be too much of a childish way of actually allowing the alliance to stop him knowing that he’s really REALLY powerful.

I don't get why people are having so much backlash about Eren allowing the Alliance to kill him, it's not a goad of "come get me", it would be hypocritical of him to take away their powers to stop him when he preaches about freedom, because then he'd just want PERSONAL freedom when want he truly wants it freedom for everybody especially Eldians.

I just think Eren doesn't detour from his character cause he's persistent on continuing the rumbling, having his own definition of freedom while he also doesn't take away his friends' power to fight him. I kinda hope that we get to see Hizuru at least once. I also believe that Mikasa deserves to know the truth about her Ackerman blood and that it does not make her a slave in any way. More than anything though I just wanna see her character done justice in this final arc so that people will finally quit complaining about her always being "Eren-obsessed." She is without a doubt one of the most misunderstood characters in the entire series.

I maintain that Eren allowing his friends to fight him and potentially die because FREEDOM is fucking weird and OOC because he had no problem taking their freedom away in 112. He lied to their faces (same chapter he stated that ignorance=slavery) and locked them in prison. He also couldn't stand losing anyone close to him for most of the manga (serumbowl, hiding info about Historia, etc.), even if it went against Paradis, and so far nothing states that he suddenly and consciously changed his mind on that. If there is no explanation for his sudden change in behavior then parts of his character just went down the drain for the sake of covering up a plothole (that could easily be resolved by just saying that the founder can't control the shifters......)

I read some theories of Hange come back as a Titan Shifter. The parallel of both Ackermans put their fist on Eren and Hange before they died. Eren came back to life again as Attack Titan after that. There are also similarities between Hange and Xavier, both do research on titans, wearing glasses and I wonder if we would find out who is this person that Zeke could trust, as Xavier mentioned. We've seen Hange almost died 3 times, during the battle with Bertholdt and Reiner revelation, the crystal underground with Kenny's team and Bertbomb. Hange managed to come back again and again. Maybe I'm just being hopeful here (crying again) but I respect if Isayama sensei really killed Hange for good. But but but.. T^T

I'm beyond sick of the alliance. If they win at this point Isayama has officially destroyed his own manga.

I'm tired of Eren and the alliance. My feelings are with Levi's promise, nothing else. What comes after that (if Levi is able to kill Zeke) it would be interesting (and amazing, I'm sure) conceptually, I will love to read it, but my heart is with our midget. He deserves to rest.

The alliance was so annoying this chapter. Reiner projecting his pathetic suicidal thoughts into Eren was just absolute cringe. For me, the Rumbling represents Eren’s own death drive. He’s killing others and wants do die in the process or afterwards. And his talk to the alliance is what his "if you don't fight you don't win" ideology boils down to. Blind, narrow-minded kid!Eren doesn't really see any other outcome other than him completing the Rumbling (aka "winning") or getting killed by his friends before he can complete it. I (heavily) suspect Isayama is going for a third option though.

This arc has highlighted Eren's internal contradictions regarding freedom. We have him forcing his friends to fight, imprisoning them, beating them, gaslighting them about their own free will, but most of all forcing the rumbling onto them, which completely takes away their agency to choose their own fate. I would be disappointed if Isayama has dropped this consistent pattern of Eren contradicting his own ideals of freedom, just to rectify his mistake of making Eren too overpowered due to rule of cool (something I initially feared), so I'm hoping the true reason has to do with Ymir taking the reins and speaking for Eren.

Eren can't help what he wants and believes in and he can't stop his convictions to move foreword, but at the same time he recognises his friends own free will and different convictions and has decided that both sides will never be able to give up their own convinces or meet at a middle ground and has decided to just let things play out.

Eren is resigned to his fate to rumble the world, but he will not command his friends to do anything. He is willing to die by their hands.

Eren prizes freedom above all else. If someone uses their freedom to try to kill him, he wouldn't mind

To be honest, this semester was a very challenging path that i will take on, especially we are in the midst of pandemic so we have to adjust and keep moving forward. Learning with this kind of situation must be very hard for us specially when we are only new to our subjects or courses. At first i find it so hard to cope up with my fellow classmates and teachers because for me, University of Makati has a high expectation to the students it gives me anxiety because i was so afraid to be left behind from my classmates, knowing that they were just in the same school in highschool while me on the other hand was different from them. It makes me feel like im alone and nobody wants me in my class.

But later on i manage to keep up with them i make friends and it gives me motivation to have a confidence when performing in class. I realize that they we’re adjusting too i just have to be brave and let my confidence go higher and make friends to them.

And of course i was very thankful that i have teachers whose very nice and very approachable. I highly appreciated them because they are also giving their best just to make us learn from them and one of it was Teacher Kat. Teacher kat is a very amazing teacher at all time i have learned a lot about his teaching especially in reading and writing because all i wanted is to enhance my reading and writing skills and also to learn the ways or the proper use of this.

The lesson that i enjoy the most was the Book and Article Critique and Resume and Cover letter. First is Book and Article Critique i enjoy this because i am that person whose addicted to books i usually read books and it’s happy to know how the author write it or how was it being made. It is important to critique a book because It allows one to build a criticism of a work: an awareness of the subject area of the work or related works. An understanding of the intent of the work, intended audience, claim creation, evidence structure or artistic style. A knowledge of the work's strengths and limitations. Whenever i do a book review it gives me the feeling of potential reader because a book review is a guide for potential readers because a book review or article review is a critical analysis of the material that describes, summarizes, and critiques the ideas presented. The purpose of a book or article review assignment is to broaden your knowledge base and understanding of a topic.

This lesson taught me about the essence of a book review and how to conduct pr create a book review. I also learned that in a book review you will learn not just the book itself but alao the author and the thinking or perspective of the author in the story. It gives me the idea of having book review is privelege for the author as wl as to reader. As the book is evaluate, the author may see errors he or she doesn’t know. It is time for him/her to continue improving their skill or if none appreciating their hardwork after finoshinh a good plot story. It also help other readers like me on having ideas of the book before reading it.

Next is Resume and Cover letter i enjoy learning this kind of topic or lesson because it gives me idea on how to make this in the future especially when i am going to apply for a job and they needed my personal information so by learning in this lesson it gives me idea on how to create a resume that will be needed for the company that i will applying on for the future. I learned that a resume is a written document created by a job applicant to outline his or her qualifications for a position. A resume is typically followed by a personalized cover letter in which the candidate shows an interest in a particular position or business and draws attention to the details of the resume that are most important. I learned that resume is not just you wanted to create it has a format and that format should be followed so that it would be easy to them to analyze it. It's more than just a document: it details your history, your talents, and your education so that a prospective employer can see how your individual experiences can contribute to the success of an organization quickly and easily. And also the cover letter when i was writing my cover letter i was so excited it feels like i am actually applying to cebu pacific airlines and i have this feeling of so much excitement in my heart because it was my dream, my dream job i wanted to be a pilot someday and having knowledge about this will help me in future because i will be able to apply this to me.

And yes, we become a better readers and writers by doing a lot of reading and writing but it is more essential if we study the proper ways to use it the proper ways in reading a text, article, books and etc. We should always know the proper ways how to write an article and book and we should not forget that by learning reading and writing it can help us in the future or maybe someday we can be a better person as well as better writer and reader. It was so amazing to learn all the topic here in reading and writing with the help of Teacher kat and her teaching skills i able to understand the topic and the lessons we had. Patience and interest in learning this would be helpful for us and make us a better writer and reader. In this course there are things that will help me enhance my ability in reading and writing it gives me more knowledge about it that i can use especially i’m a fan of reading and writing.

I am happy and grateful to learn this course because Teacher kat delivers it well and she is more approachable than the other subject teacher like even though she is busy she still manage to reply whenever we need her guidelines or when there are thing that we’re confused of. She was also a jolly person. She always teach us with a smile on her face showing that she was really dedicated on teaching us some lessons. I was very happy to be taught by you teacher kat i hope to meet you soon and to thank you in person. You’re beautiful inside and out maam! but they started out by feeling called to look towards my career and life purpose – two topics that have been HEAVY on my mind over the past two weeks; heavier than anything else. they said that in the past, i've felt very lost and that is 1000% true. i only just recently found myself in the past three n a half years through spirituality which was able to give me that passion and authentic drive to follow. they also said that i feel lost presently as well, which is also true. ive been doing my best to find my direction again and i know im achieving it.

the first thing that stood out to me was how they described deep friendships and relationships being apart of my vision of stability, but me realizing that i need to let go of the fears that i wont have those things and trust that theyll come to... this is huge. i just made a major change in my life plans to move to costa rica rather than spain because i realized i was making that decision based in the fear that i wouldnt find friends that would love me like i was loved in spain. which is definitely not true.

they then explained one of the visions they received where they saw a moth flying through the woods at night – interpreting it as trusting your instincts and intuitions – how you feel – rather than what the ‘logical’ choice may be. logically, i should go back to spain where i already have a foundation. but in my heart, i feel called to latin america and that tropical life style. and ive been struggling with this dissonance and resistance a lot over the past week. so this message was MUCH needed.

"I feel like you may have already done a lot of shadow work naturally and this is like the last little step to go before you feel deeply liberated from more earthly concerns–” this observation is VERY true. shadow work is something i pride myself in doing the work for, and i believe that reconnecting with my latina side through travel is the next step in my spiritual path. being surrounded with nature and feeling connected and immersed on all levels. i know that by following my passions, i will always be led to peace and fulfillment. the message to “see through your own eyes again” is also HEAVILY resonant because i feel like im finally starting to do that again.

i am HIGHLY empathic and they hit the nail right on the head when they said “it just may be tiresome, but i feel like you know this, are introspective, and have it under control.” ive been aware of it for three years now and have figured out how to manage it pretty well i think! still ups and downs but im Functioning now lol

holy shit i need to stop telling myself to keep my fics short cuz thats what always makes them three times longer than i originally planned. anYWAYS, i know the point of fabfivefeb is kinda to focus on one bro a week specifically, buuuut my brain grabbed my face, yelled an idea into it and now this is going to be a full series i guess. i hope this still counts! also, just as a warning, the first few fics are going to be chronologically out of order-- gordons pov fic, aka this one, comes like, almost last in the line of fics i have planned-- but im hoping that just adds to the aesthetic im giving this series

If you asked just-turned-10-years-old Gordon what he thought of his kid brother, you would probably be horrified at the things he could and did say.

Nowadays the 22-year-old felt bad about it-- like, exponentially so-- but back then he couldn’t help it. It was a Tracy rite-of-passage to not want a younger sibling when they came-- yes, even Scott, who Gordon secretly believed it was his fault for John being so nerdy. You should have wanted a nice pair of tennis shoes in his place, Scotty, not a chemistry kit.

Gordon, for all intents purposes, managed to be the worst-case out of four. Virgil wondered if his fiery temper rubbed off on Alan growing up, and the more Gordon caught wind of how Alan could be when angry, the more Gordon thought his immediate older brother was right.

Regardless, everyone in the family managed to at least get the OG Tracy baby to play nice when Alan was born. Gordon’s involvement could be described as nothing: he never did anything to actively harm Alan (he was raised better than that, c’mon), but whenever Gordon could get away from the tiny tot, he did. A couple of years went by, the world adjusted to five Tracy sons, and so did the Tracy family. Even Gordon was starting to see the merit in being an older brother.

Then, tragedy struck.

The avalanche that ripped apart their entire world came crashing down in more ways than one. Hoo boy, the tabloids had a field day with it. They always wanted to know every little detail, and when the family refused to give them anything, they came up with their own stories. The only details they got were from cheating, as a nosy reporter managed to grab a picture of 3-year-old Alan fighting for his life in the hospital, and the internet ran with it.

It was very quickly found out that their mother had died in the disaster as well, and along with the little snake’s photo of Alan, accusations were thrown around as if they were nothing more than plush baseballs, not full-blown knives digging into the Tracy men’s skin. Where was Jeff Tracy? Did he leave his wife and youngest to perish without a thought? The man did have four older sons, maybe he considered them to be more valuable? The last child wasn’t a planned addition in the first place, so it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to assume so!

What they would never know, Gordon thought bitterly and spitefully, was how Alan wasn’t the only Tracy kid that played in the snow that day. Alan easily got sick as a child for undetermined reasons, and lo and behold, the tiny blonde started running a low-grade fever during their vacation. Lucy offered to stay with Alan at the cabin while Jeff went to find an on-sight doctor. Virgil, who was starting to get into that kind of stuff, went with him.

John saw… something in the gift shop he wanted to grab (none of the brothers could really tell you that much about that day anymore), and since it was relatively close to where Jeff needed to ask for a doctor, the parents felt it would be okay for the red-head to explore the shop by himself, especially since John was easily the most well-behaved out of the children. Gordon was going to go with them to-- what did you expect-- get away from Alan. That’s when smother-hen-in-the-making Scott suggested Gordon stay back with Alan so he could get to know the baby of the family more.

The only reason Gordon agreed to stay was that Scott was staying as well. Gordon hadn’t had that much time recently to hang out with his oldest bro, so he thought it was worth dealing with the little tyke in the room as well. Besides, mom was there too. She could watch him.

Gordon couldn’t for the life of him remember who was where when the literal tons of snow came to say hi. They all got knocked out relatively quick, but from Dad’s recollection of Scott’s eye-witness account, Scott and mom woke up at some point. Scott then went on to carry his youngest siblings out and away from the danger zone, only to re-pass out a good distance away from the buried cabin.

There were many details left out by Scott, and even more were left out by their father, who wanted to give his eldest some sense of security despite all the chaos. Gordon would only learn a little bit more (and by golly was it enough) when he was 16 and grounded by Scott himself. We know Dad is gone! Stop trying to replace him! Gordon shamefully admits that he was purposefully trying back then to be as difficult as possible. Sure, it was due to grief over losing their last living parent, but that didn’t mean he had to take out his rage like he was less than half his age.

People always credited Alan as being the angry baby, but Gordon could be a right bastard when he wanted.

Virgil shut up him right up with a tiny admission that Gordon would never let Scott know he knew. It was the least the swimmer could do after everything their oldest brother gave up.

“You know he promised her, right?”

Teenaged Gordon hissed as Virgil readjusted his piggyback, jostling Gordon’s broken leg in the process. Sneaking out didn’t really seem all that thrilling anymore. He still managed to squeak out through gritted teeth, “W-What?”

Virgil kept his face straight, a weird kind of stoic covering all of his emotions burning within, “Scott promised mom he would keep you two safe. It was the only thing he could do for her.”

That gut-punch didn’t help Gordon’s bruised ribs, and Virgil should have just broken his leg more next. Would have been a nicer follow up than the metaphorical groin kick Gordon received.

“Dad wondered if she was even aware-- or maybe even alive-- enough to hear him.”

Gordon had a lot of time in the hospital to think about those words, even more so when he watched his brunette brother sleep by his bedside. 22-year-old Scott should have been furious, should have ripped him a new one for being such a prick, but the only thing Gordon witnessed him do that night was run into the room as soon as he got the news that Gordon was okay and gently collapse onto his younger brother to collect the blonde into his arms while he tried desperately not to break down-- tried to be strong. Gordon was so caught off guard that he could only wrap his arms back around Scott in a weak attempt to reassure the new head of the Tracy Clan.

Later in the week when Gordon wasn’t so dead on his feet, Scott finally found the reprimand he wanted to give and tore into Gordon. Of course, Gordon snapped back too. They had the typical ‘What were you thinking?!’ ‘I wanted to have fun!’ kind of argument, but it was… softer, in a way, especially on Gordon’s part.

During that same night, after the argument, Gordon would hear 10-year-old Alan sneak into his room with a box full of familiar lights, abruptly reminding Gordon of a feeling he felt a long time ago, back during the ‘recovery’ part of the aftermath of the avalanche. One he couldn’t entirely explain until right then, thanks to Scott’s reactions throughout that entire week.

See, Scott’s plan of Gordon getting along with Alan backfired pretty horribly as Gordon, in all of his trauma and denial, managed to loop his tiny mind around into thinking Alan was at least partially responsible. If he wasn’t sick… if he wasn’t there… if he hadn’t been born--

Yeah, he was 8 at the time, but Gordon still feels sick for even coming up with that thought way back when.

Well, what’s done is done, and for the majority of the first two years, after their wonderful mom left the Earth, Gordon could only describe it like a daze of sorts. Dad was drowning himself in his work, Scott had seen horrors not even adults should’ve had to have seen, Gordon was stuck in the nice world of childhood depression, Virgil and John were caught in the middle like they always were and sometimes still are, and Alan? They really weren’t sure what he was going through due to one simple problem.

Because that was the joke of the day, the ironic twist so to speak. Believe it or not, Alan tended to be a quiet kid.

Many who knew their family would retort with yeah, anyone is quiet standing next to you, Gordon! or they would at least point out the constant babbling that tended to come from the youngest Tracy in the first place. First, Gordon would snort and admit, okay, that’s fair, and then explain how Alan was quiet when it really mattered.

And how it sucked.

The kid could go on and on about what video game he played recently or how stupid his homework was, but when you got down to it you couldn’t get Alan to talk enough.

Back when Alan still did school on the mainland, his older brothers didn’t even know he was being bullied until the bruises started showing up on parts that weren’t covered by clothes (the ones that were, though, damn). It didn’t even occur to the older brothers that Alan was getting more and more quiet each day. After getting the perpetrators expelled and rightfully ripped a new one, Scott and John asked Alan why on earth he didn’t tell them. He just shrugged his tiny kid shoulders and said, “It didn’t seem like that big of a deal.”

Virgil’s 18th birthday was a night to remember, not just because it was a blast, but because they spent half the night in the waiting room at the hospital. They were hanging out in the cities, which was probably already a bad idea. In the first half of the day, the five of them had to cross a crosswalk. Simple enough, right? However, with the torrent of adults much larger than him, 12-year-old Alan lost his grip on John’s hand and toppled over with his arm out in front of him, leaving the limb out on a silver platter to be squashed by a rather large boot.

The man that did it felt really bad, actually, which was a breath of fresh air. He insisted that he would pay for any medical bills that came from the accident. The only reason they never went to any medical facility (immediately, at least) was that, after calming down, Alan insisted his arm felt fine. His reaction time in his fingers was still okay as well, so they left it alone. The four of them probably should have questioned why Alan was so quiet for the rest of the party, but they were too into the euphoria of Virgil’s big day to realize so. A little bit more into the celebration and Alan went missing. It was a miracle that they got Scott to not run off to the nearest police officer immediately. In hindsight, they probably should have, but panic makes the mind go woo woo.

After an hour of searching, they found Alan silently crying his eyes out in a corner. Gordon suspected Virgil never really got over the guilt. None of them have, probably. They really should have insisted they got it checked out right away. Sure, the reason they mainly assumed it was okay was that they’ve been hit with worse and only walked away with bruises-- John walked home from school one day with dirt and mud in his hair, scrapes littering his arms, and when asked what happened the ginger silently commented, “I got hit by a car,” as if it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Not only did Jeff feel the number of years dwindle until his inevitable heart attack, but he also got to watch his eldest gain his first grey hairs with many more to come.

While getting a piggyback from yours truly, John calmly asked Alan why he didn’t say anything (again). The youngest just shrugged and buried his face into Gordon’s neck, “I didn’t want to be a problem. It’s Virge’s day…”

It would be a reoccurring problem for Alan to be hush-hush about physical and emotional strains put on him for years to come. It wasn’t a big problem out on the field (yet), but they were always extra sure to drill into the freckled boy if it seemed like he wasn’t talking as much as he usually did. They were pretty sure it came from the fact that Alan was originally, well, not planned, as all those wonderful journalists pointed out.

They never actively kept it a secret. The age gaps, as well as the press, made it real hard to do so in the first place. Plus, keeping things like that a secret did more damage than not. But the idea was there, and the idea of being a ‘burden’ on anyone was a damaging thought that always seemed to ring in the back of Alan’s subconscious, so he made sure to only speak when he felt he absolutely could or if it wasn’t too much of a task he was asking of them (which they all hated, Scott especially).

The rest of them hoped to pick up what Lucy left behind, which was her efforts to make her newest son feel wanted and loved despite not being apart of the original quota. Gordon worried his older brothers felt a little too guilty about not being able to fully wash it away. It was part of the reason they let him act a little bit childishly on missions: if he feels comfortable enough to do so, then they can’t take it away from him out of fear that they’ll never get it back. It was also why he was just so excited to go on a mission: he could prove himself to be just as good as his older brothers.

Speaking of their mother (man, Gordon loved to ramble tonight, didn’t he), the whole reason any of this was a thing in the first place was Alan’s reaction to the avalanche. That’s when his whole ‘silent act’ issue became apparent. Because the kid became quiet. Period. He stopped talking for two years. Young Gordon wouldn’t even realize this until Virgil started to teach him ASL in their free time. Alan was still an energetic kid, he just… could not get his voice box to work.

The doctors insisted there was no physical damage, either, so they just had to wait and learn ways around it.

Gordon just could not wrap his young, tiny mind around why his loud and obnoxious and annoying younger bro just shut up. Intrigued at the idea of Alan actually being quiet, Gordon started to hang out with him more, especially since Gordon craved the general sense of peace during that time in his life. Yep, crazy, energy-lover Gordon needed the space to just sit and think, and where better than to rant about how crappy life was then at your great-listener-because-he-didn’t-want-to-talk brother.

As time went on in the second half of those two years, the youngest two grew close. Closer than any of the older brothers thought possible. Scott thinks they created their own hand language just for themselves during that time. Gordon was slowly becoming more and more himself, and Alan, well, still didn’t talk, but his energetic-ness was getting bigger and bigger each passing day. Unfortunately, so did their eagerness to be the biggest piece of shits in the world.

Baby Alan stumbled across a can of whip cream that the family forgot to put away. Toddling over to Gordon, the little one shook the can around as a way to say, ‘What could we do with this?’

Gordon’s first idea was to put a huge, glopping pile right on Scott’s pillow where his head directly laid. The sputtering and anger Scott responded with, as well as Virgil’s and John’s snickers at the whole thing, filled Gordon’s head with a million ways to continue his meticulous schemes. Alan got roped in the second the general idea of being able to make his family happy came to fruition.

April 16th was the day The Terrible Two officially started. Virgil was pretty sure he saw John’s calendar with this day marked specifically as a way to remind him not to come down. Virgil just wished he could ask his immediate older brother to let him up on ‘Five that day too.

Their pranks became more and more intense as they came up with each new one, and on the anniversary of their mother’s passing, they disappeared the entire morning. Due to grief, and the fact none of the remaining three sons wanted to deal with tar and feathers or their coffee mug shocking them again, they didn’t think too much of it. Honestly, after the last prank of filling their pillows with jello, they found the quietness to be a blessing. Then the sun started to set without the two of them home yet and they saw it as less of a blessing and more of a curse.

They couldn’t lose them, not on that day.

The house security cams showed the two of them heading into the woods behind their house with some kind of box, and that was all Scott, John, and Virgil needed to go sprinting out of the house. At this point, Dad was getting better about not drowning in work, but he still needed a little more counseling before he would be fully back. That left the three eldest brothers to go on a wild goose chase.

After searching for what Scott remembered feeling like a thousand years, they stumbled upon the two blondes giggling in an opening in the trees. Bursting through the bushes without a second thought, Scott and Virgil (with John behind them) not only saw their brothers unharmed and having a blast in the middle of the opening, all around them in the trees hung big and bright lights. It was as if they were standing in a pocket of stars. Stars they made from their own will and determination.

It was iridescent enough to make the three older brothers gasp just once before remembering why they were out in the dark and cold woods in the first place. Scott trudged over a little more forcefully than he probably realized. Right as he stood over his two youngest brothers, Alan’s tiny, freckled face looked up into his eyes obliviously and pointed at the set of lights.

“Look! Gordz made it pretty!”

Scott and Virgil wrapped their younger brother in the biggest bear hug ever, anger and fear forgotten. It was quiet, whispered and somewhat broken from two years of non-use, but damn, it was Alan. The light at the end of the tunnel seemed even closer. The two of them might have stained the back of Alan’s shirt with tears. Alan didn’t need to know.

Meanwhile, John, flabbergasted and slowly entering a state of shock due to his adrenaline drop followed by even more adrenaline after hearing Alan again, walked over to where Gordon was and simply asked, “How did you do… that?”

It was a question for more than one thing: how did you get Alan to start talking? How did you hang up the lights with no serious injury? How did the two of you grow up so quickly and closely without us even realizing?

All Gordon did was shrug, bring his hands behind his head with his elbows above it, and cheekily grinned, “There are just some secrets two brothers need to keep!”

When the two blondes shared a room that night, tangled with one another like the cords in the lights, Gordon felt something in his chest. It was something warm and fuzzy, and he would only feel it again for years to come when it was towards his only younger brother.

The 10-year-old didn’t know what it was, but he knew that when he figured it out, he would try to be better at it than Scott ever was. Heh, nowadays, he realized that probably wasn’t possible, but that was also okay.

Alan only needed one Scooter.

Right now, however, he needed his one and only Gordz.

Brains and other therapists suggested the reason Alan got quiet after going through a traumatic event was simply that it was easier to block things out if you were quiet.

All the brain energy that went to his mouth could be used to not think about the awful things he heard or witnessed. It was perfect. It left the rest of his brain to still be used for all of the other things he liked to do: he could hang out with his brothers and sister, play video games, and (unfortunately) work on homework without cause of concern.

Alan thought it was simple. His family thought it was torture. After all, he wouldn’t tell them what was wrong, and if he didn’t tell them they couldn’t fix it. It was everything their ‘am big person, protect the small’ inner programming hated and they felt like screaming. It was the avalanche again. It was Alan’s bullies again. It was the broken arm again. It was Dad’s disappearance again. Man, they never thought Alan would come back after that one.

But dammit, Gordon thought, their dad isn’t gone anymore, and it was because their stupid, selfless little brother was willing to go through hell and back to get him for them. The least Gordon could do was show Alan how much it was appreciated. How much he was appreciated.

But at this point, Gordon was on the verge of calling it a night.

It was a simple fucking question: do you remember where those stringed lights were?

Sure, it’s been God knows how many years since anyone has pulled them out, and Grandma did pack away a lot of stuff in rather secluded places that she deemed unimportant or, well, too traumatizing. But they could at least give him a general direction on where to go! Everyone knew the basic details of the layout of their storage compartments, come on!

Gordon was sitting in the kitchen, groaning into his hands when he heard someone clearing their throat from the doorway. Snapping his face away from his palms, he looked up into the eyes of none other than his father. The older man had eye bags for days, and his eyes were a little wearier than Gordon liked, but the small grin made Gordon feel like everything was alright.

Or maybe it was the box with the familiar lights in his arms. Mostly that.

Gordon stood up and blinked, “D-Dad--”

Jeff walked into the kitchen in a way that spoke, ‘let me say this first,’ “Scott mentioned you were driving your family crazy searching for this. I may not know how you boys set up the island after I left, but I do know your grandmother is stubborn as a bull. The only place she would have put this was in the decorations closet, where it wasn’t, which I’m sure you figured out, hence the constant nagging, so that means some kind of outside force moved it to a place least expected.”

Gordon was lost, “Where was it?”

Jeff let out a slight huff of air, “The back of Alan’s closet.”

Damn. Dammit dammit damn. Why wasn’t that obvious?

With a grip gentler than Gordon remembered he had, he took the box from Jeff. As he was examining the contents, he was able to smile at his father, “Thanks, Dad, this is exactly what I wanted.”

Jeff laid a hand on his son’s shoulder, squeezing softly, “I’ve left this family to take care of itself twice in my lifetime, it was the least I could do. May I ask why you need them?”

The least I could do: goddamn was this family a hive mind sometimes. That didn’t stop Gordon from asking his burning question, “How quickly can we make these waterproof?”

It took all of half a second for Jeff to raise his eyebrows in confusion, followed by one of his trademark grins.

Oh yeah, the Tracy family was coming back

“Shhh Allie, keep it on.”

Alan rolled his eyes. Whenever Gordon blindfolded him it always ended poorly. Whether the ultimate bad ending would come to Alan or Gordon completely depended on how previously well-thought-out Gordon planned this to be. Regardless, Alan needed to do something other than chores and college applications since there was none of it left for today. He was getting so good it was kind of bad. In fact, one of the first things he did was drown himself in his work to the point that everything he missed in his captivity was done within the first three days of being back.

And here the public thought Alan and his father had nothing in common.

Alan felt Gordon’s hands on his shoulders the entire time they walked together. Eventually, they paused as Gordon needed to open the door to the outside, which was a great sign, by the way. Alan’s ears were picking up every little noise, including each of the thunks their feet made down the stairs, as well as the whistling of the wind blowing through their hair. Alan didn’t need to take off the blindfold to know it was night. The last thing Alan was looking at before Gordon scared the shit out of him with the blindfold from nowhere was the clock, 10:04 PM.

The thunks suddenly became less hollow, signaling they were on solid ground. It took Alan a couple of seconds longer than he would’ve liked to realize that Gordo was walking them straight towards the pool. Alan, remembering all the times he’d been shoved in it, started to fight back. Only minorly, though, like a baby wolf trying to overtake the Alpha of the pack. In the end, it didn’t matter, as Gordon stopped both of them with a slight push downward on Alan’s shoulders, signaling he didn’t need to walk anymore.

Gordon took his hands away and started speaking when he saw Alan wasn’t going anywhere. He walked around to the front of his brother, “So… this might be a long shot, but you remember those ‘starry lights’ we played with all the time?”

Alan blinked a few times behind the blindfold. Yeah, he did remember them. It was a huge staple between them. The days it got hard, or cold, or when it seemed like nothing would get better, they would pull those lights out and forget everything else. It felt like they were surrounded by a blanket of hope.

Gordon first wanted to do it in some random room at their old house two years after their mother passed, but quiet Alan suggested they go out to the woods. He flapped his tiny hands, and to paraphrase what he said, We’ll have more room! Plus, the real stars will make it even cooler!

From then on, it was just another thing between the two of them. They pulled the lights out when one of them was sad and the other wanted to cheer them up. After their mother’s death, after failing a test at school, after Dad’s disappearance, after Gordon’s hydrofoil crash…

Gordon will forever be grateful for Alan’s ability to be a little piece of shit. He’ll never know how the kid snuck the box into the hospital and he hoped he never found out. The hospital staff wasn’t as thrilled by the lights hung up around the room. Gordon was pretty sure he saw the pic up on ‘Five at one point, though, so at least someone appreciated their talents.

Right, the important matter at hand. Gordon needed to work on his rambling-when-stressed problem, “Well, Allie Allie Allie, guess what I found?”

Before Alan could tilt his head, the blindfold was untied from his head by Gordon. It fell off his face to reveal said older brother standing directly in front of him with a grin on his face that said, ‘you’re not going to believe this.’ Once Gordon saw Alan’s attention was completely on him, he stepped out of the way quickly so Alan’s line of focus could stay on what was in front of him and not just on his brother.

Alan’s breath caught in his throat.

Gordon smirked at his brother’s flabbergasted look, “You know how they say how the ocean isn’t that much different than deep space? Well, I think I found a way to make them even closer.”

Alan held his hand out in front of him only slightly. He was worried if he moved anything that the beautiful sight in front of him would go away. Those wonderful, amazing lights were all submerged in the pool in various spots near the bottom, the refractions making it look like there were twice as many. The pool looked like it had a weird, unique case of the chickenpox. It was breathtaking.

Little puffs of Alan’s breath were condensing into the familiar white clouds in front of his face due to the chill, but he didn’t care. The sight in front of him was much more important. Before he could sign a thank you, or maybe even just cry (which he would hate, thank God for interruptions), Gordon slung an arm around Alan’s shoulders, catching the freckled boy’s attention again.

Gordon waited for those wide, blue eyes to look at him directly before beginning, “I can’t even begin to imagine what happened up there. Part of me wants to be selfish and never come up with thoughts even close to that kind of shit, but… it’s not fair to you.”

Alan blinked and was suddenly turned 90 degrees to be standing front-to-front with Gordon. The older brother continued speaking when he put his hands on Alan’s shoulders, stretching his arms out to their full length, “You don’t… you don’t have to talk about everything, I know that first hand, but… don’t shut us out. You’re not a burden, you’re not a problem, I know that’s a thought of yours that’s been made worse by that bastard but the last thing I want is to--”

Gordon choked off his words due to a mixture of rage and pure sadness bubbling within. Suddenly, he couldn’t look Alan in the eyes anymore, “I just don’t want to fail you any more than I already have.”

Gordon looked down at their feet to watch some of his tears fall to the ground and splish-splash on the concrete. Dammit, he promised a lot of things (mainly himself) that he would be strong for this, but he supposes he was never the best at taking things seriously.

Gordon’s breath hitched at the feeling of two small hands on his cheeks. Those same hands brought his face back up to look at Alan sadly grinning, his own tears starting to form in his blue eyes. Before Gordon could curse himself out for failing this plan so spectacularly, his heart stopped in a good way at a tiny admission, a verbal one.

“Please… don’t make… me cry, too…”

Holy shit. Part of Gordon’s brain thought, ‘sweet, it only took a few weeks, a new record!’ but the other part, the big brother one day I’ll be better than Scott! part leaped a hundred feet in the air out of pure joy. With a laugh, Gordon yanked Alan into his arms and squeezed tight. Alan simply returned the gesture, albeit his arms were around Gordon’s waist, nor was his grip as strong. They did both have tear tracks on their cheeks, however.

Alan was still there. He was still their selfless, annoying, little bro, and he might not be fully back, but it was enough to know that not even the fucking Hood could take him away from them.

It would take a while to get back to normal. Scott would still pass out due to exhaustion from time to time until he fully realized it was all over, John, while not physically up on ‘Five, would take a while to fully come back down to Earth, Virgil was going to be found at that damn piano bench more than in his own room, and God only knew how Kayo or even Dad was going to react as the days went forward.

But they would get there. The Terrible Two were going to make sure of it, one prank at a time.

Hi I recently started following your blog and its been a big help for gathering materials and ideas for my own campaign. I just am having trouble understanding what the Underdark is and how that is in relation to the material plane. Is it apart of it or how does it work. If you could let me know that would be fantastic! Oh and any other timps for first time DMs!

First of all, I am SO sorry this is so late like I read this early in the morning before work and then told myself i’d answer when I got home. But boom, weeks later and here we are. I am The Worst and I apologize but IM HERE NOW. Since I waited so long, i’m gonna go all out for you anon. So prepare for a long answer!

The Underdark is a complicated setting that I was first introduced to through the first few episodes of Critical Role season 1! On the wikipedia, it says:

“It is described as a vast subterranean network of interconnected caverns and tunnels, stretching beneath entire continents and forming an underworld for surface settings.”

Some consider it to be apart of the prime material plane (the normal world), and others consider it a realm in and of itself. You can see it primarily in the Forgotten Realms and World of Greyhawk campaign settings. Hell, its even in the video game, Neverwinter Nights! So we know it’s popular. But what is it?

Well that’s honestly up to much interpretation. The Underdark can be what you want it to be. But there are some shining features of the Underdark that make it what it is:

Its underground

It’s dark, it’s dank, and it’s cold

Usually inhabitted by grotesque monsters and uncommon races such as drow, illithids, aboleth, duergar, kuo-toa, ect.

Much of those who inhabit the Underdark are (in past official campaign settings at least) of neutral to evil alignments. This is optional though imo.

There’s usually an entrance or portal into the Underdark somewhere on the surface or in the prime material plane. That part is up to you to create.

In my homebrew campaign, the entrance to the Underdark is through a massive, inactive, hollowed out volcano in which the drow of my continent reside within. In the Forgotten Realms setting, there are ports to the Underdark via the Underchasm which is a huge canyon created by a spellplague. Seen here:

But you can make your port of entrance anything you want it to be! That’s the fun part.

Moving on, I like to reference the level-system used in the Forgotten Realms (because while most like to shit on it, i think it’s a very well developed campaign setting OKAY don’t hate me) to describe the Underdark’s specific chasms and their purpose and what they hold.

Upperdark

The first three miles below the surface. It was here where the surface dwellers and those in the Underdark most often met.

Middledark

Located three to ten miles below the surface, this layer was where most of the Underdark cities were located.

Lowerdark

Ten miles or more below the surface, the Lowerdark was where even those who knew the Underdark were loath to go.

So it’s obvious that the Underdark is more than just a dark, dank hole in the ground of someone’s campaign setting. As described above, there are settlements too! Thus, the presence of an economy as well. Typically, an Underdark economy will consist of armor, timber and weapons, as well as the darker trades such as slavery, magics, and exotic goods.

But usually, there isn’t just one massive, all hailing economy in the whole of the Underdark. The Underdark is a huge place, typically encompassing entire continents or entire planets. It is often a lawless place in most settings, so economies and rules of the land can vary from city to city, state to state, continent to continent. It is entirely up to you how you want to split up your Underdark setting or how you’d like to civilize it.

Personally, i’d love to see a unique take on the Underdark where they’re not the dark, horrific place that everyone views them to be. But instead, they’re a civilized society with some rather dark leaning practices. But that’s just me.

Just keep in mind that because the Underdark setting is usually so massive, you shouldn’t feel the need to develop the entire thing. It’s like creating an entirely new world in most cases, and I highly doubt your players who live in the prime or the surface will find the time to explore all of it. That is unless your campaign setting IS the Underdark. Then, by all means– GO NUTS!

All in all, the Underdark has a few iconic and unique characteristics that should probably be met so it’s recognized as the Underdark. But for the most part, it is still entirely up to you how you brew it up! That’s the great thing about Dungeons & Dragons, is you can rip all the pieces of something you like from different settings and paste it all together to create something new and unique, never before seen! Results of A-Spec Labels Survey

Firstly, thank you to everyone who participated in this survey!! There were 315 respondents, and I received some answers that surprised me and helped me to understand how the aromantic and asexual community utilizes labels.

The results are under the cut. I do want to start off with saying that I only posted a link to this survey on Tumblr, so almost all of the answers are from people who would fit the typical “Tumblr” demographic (typically young, gay, inclusionist, etc). Please keep this in mind, as well as the fact that this is a very small pool of aros and aces as far as data collection goes.

Warning: this post is VERY long, and the q slur is used uncensored, as well as the term “h***sexual” in one part.

I decided to create this survey because I’ve seen dozens of terms and labels on Tumblr used by the aromantic and asexual community, and some of them make me wonder, “Do people really use this word? Do they find it helpful?” or “This is so specific, how many people identify this way?” I figured that the best way to find out was to ask people, “Do you use this label?”

Overall there were 315 respondents who chose 1,013 labels to describe their romantic and sexual orientations. I made the survey very quickly, so there were certain things that were not as clear as they could be and some questions I should have asked. Because of this, I created a second survey that is still open, and can be found here. I also made a list of definitions for words used in the second survey, which should include almost all terms that are used in this post.

Note: Every question was mandatory and the respondent could check off as many labels as they wanted to, as well as write in their own answer. Many people chose more than one answer for each question. Certain labels are also used as umbrella terms.

Question 1: How would you describe your romantic orientation?

As I expected, the 3 most common labels were aromantic, demiromantic, and gray aromantic. I was surprised that gray aromantic was tied for 3rd most common label with questioning/unsure. the 4th most common label was biromantic, and gay and quoiromantic tied for 5th most common term. Here is the graph without aromantic, to show how the responses compare without the outlier:

I, personally, was surprised by how many people use the terms quoiromantic and aroflux.

Here’s how the answers break down when grouped by type of attraction. For this purpose, a gendered orientation is an alloromantic orientation (gay, straight, bi, etc); I did not use the term alloromantic because most respondents used the terms in addition to gray aromantic labels (demiromantic, cupioromantic, aroflux, etc). It’s also worth noted that some people chose the option “no label” in addition to one or more other label; only 4 respondents chose “no label” as their only answer.

As I said, many people used more than one label.

There were 18 write-in answers:

The reason “queer” was not given as a response to choose from is merely because it slipped my mind.

Question 2: How would you describe your sexual orientation?

The responses to this question were distinctly different from the first. The most common labels were asexual, demisexual, gray asexual, bisexual, gay, and unsure/questioning.

There was a significant decrease in microlabels when compared to romantic orientation, as well as “questioning/unsure” being nearly cut in half. It seems to me, based off of these results, that respondents were more clear on whether or not/how they experienced sexual attraction as opposed to romantic attraction.

Over half of respondents to this survey identified themselves as asexual. By coincidence, only 4 respondents chose “no label” as their only answer to this question as well.

Over 2/3rds of respondents chose only one label, further solidifying my theory that respondents were more confident in their sexuality than their romantic orientation. This is not to say that the use of more than one label is an indicator of uncertainty in one’s identity; based on the data I have, people tended to list out the labels they were questioning, so the use of many labels is at least somewhat indicative of uncertainty in this particular set of data. There are plenty of people who are very confident in 3 labels and plenty of people who only use 1 label and are unsure about it.

There were 19 write-in answers:

Again, I simply forgot to include “queer” as an option. As for the respondent who considers themself to be aro ace but prefers the term bi, I counted them as biromantic and bisexual in the results, even though they responded to the first 2 questions with aromantic and asexual.

I do apologize if I made anyone uncomfortable by using the term “homosexual” in the survey. The reason I used it was to try to clarify that I meant the word gay as “only attracted to the same gender”, as opposed to its broader definition. I made sure to not use the term in the second incarnation of the survey, and did not use it in my graphs of the results.

Question 3: Do you use any of the below terms to describe other kinds of attraction you may or may not feel?

I mainly included this question because I personally have not found these terms helpful in my understanding of my own attraction. However, I see these words on Tumblr often so people must find them useful. I was happy to see that nearly all respondents do use at least one of the terms above, which means that the terms have definitely been useful to many people. I was particularly surprised by the popularity of the term sensual attraction, as I do not see it used nearly as often as aesthetic and alterous attraction on Tumblr posts.

There were 15 write-in answers:

I believe that the respondent that started their response with “maybe” is describing sensual attraction, but did not count them as answering “sensual”. I also believe that “queer” and “uranic” attraction are not types of attraction in the same way that romantic and alterous are.

Question 4: Does your romantic orientation align with your sexual orientation?

This question seemed to confuse a lot of respondents, so I went through all responses on my own and compiled the answers that I feel made sense.

This chart represents the actual answers that respondents gave to the question. The 3 answers labelled “other” are respondents who either do not consider themselves to have a romantic and/or sexual orientation or do not use the split-attraction model. In hindsight, I should definitely have added options for those who do not use the split-attraction model. I made sure to apply these changes when I created the second iteration of this survey.

There were 12 write-in answers:

First of all, being 100% aro ace isn’t sad!! It’s great and natural and I hope you learn to love this part of yourself ❤. When sorting out these responses, I considered aro/allo and allo/ace responses to be different because of the gender(s) the respondent is attracted to.

This chart is the result of me going through each individual response and seeing whether or not respondents used the same labels to describe their romantic and sexual orientation. I considered aromantic to align with asexual when compiling these responses. To make this a little clearer, here are examples of each type of answer:

One person indicated that they are abroromantic, gray aromantic, abrosexual, and gray asexual. Another indicated that they are demiromantic and demisexual. These responses were labeled as “same”.

One person indicated that they are demiromantic, gray asexual, and asexual. Another indicated that they are panromantic and asexual. These responses were labeled as “different”.

One person indicated that they are gay romantic, gay sexual, and demisexual. Another indicated that they are biromantic, demiromantic, gray aromantic, quoiromantic, gray asexual, and quoisexual. These responses were labeled as “some same, some different”.

Because Aromantic Asexual seems to be the most common combination of romantic and sexual orientations in this community, I decided to see how many people chose only the labels aromantic and asexual and compared it to the overall response:

To make it even more clear that this is a large percentage comparatively, I added 2 other random answers:

So many responses were unique that it would take a very long time to break every combination down by percentage, but hopefully this gives an idea.

Overall, this was very interesting and gave me a better idea of what the community looks like. I ended up taking what I learned from creating this survey and using it to create a better version, that I have tried to post in more places to get a more diverse pool. If you would like to take the new survey of spread it to others in the aromantic and asexual community, here is a link. I currently have a little over 1.000 respondents for the new survey, so it will take a long time to get the results together but what I do get will be better representative of the aromantic and asexual community. hello i am HERE for cecilos week... ive had a helluva day so everyone say thank you last week me for writing most of this bc i could not have written anything today omg. im SO excited to do this prompt week and to see all of the great content everyone’s gonna make!!!!

Day 1: Fashion/Science!

Cecil Palmer was … an interesting character. Carlos had only been in Night Vale for about a week now, and he was avoiding the radio host like the plague. The embarrassment and surprise of hearing his name on the radio so much had scared him away, and while he was a little intrigued, he would just rather avoid that problem entirely until Cecil inevitably forgot about him and moved on.

He had only formally met Cecil once, and he had been in the middle of some ... very important science at the time. Carlos would probably describe Cecil as a man who was not tall nor short, not thin nor fat, but that's about as far as he could go, since he did not make eye contact once during their entire encounter, out of the nervousness of never knowing which eye to look at, which was heightened by the fact that Cecil seemed to have three.

The day of that encounter, he was teased by all of his coworkers when they heard about it on the radio, and he had not gone back to the radio station since.

But of course, you can only successfully avoid someone for so long…

Out at the Ralph's buying groceries, something caught Carlos’ eye. It wasn't polite or proper to stare, so Carlos refrained, but he glanced down the aisle a few times to catch glimpses.

The person was facing away from Carlos and into the aisle. The outfit they were wearing was eye-catching in almost every way imaginable. Their shirt, a red crop-top, had long, semi-transparent bell sleeves that stretched down almost to the floor, and their pants were a shiny metallic silver. From these two things alone, Carlos was given the impression of some sort of avant garde fashionista, but then there was more. To top the whole outfit off, they were wearing lime green crocs. Now, Carlos didn't know enough about fashion to really make any assumptions, but it certainly caught his eye, to say the least.

The person turned, and he quickly turned back at the macaroni and cheese on the shelf in front of him so he wouldn't be caught looking. He didn't realize that the person was walking towards him until he heard:

“Carlos! Hey!”

Carlos looked up, and was surprised as he met Cecil's eyes.

“O-oh,” he said. “Hi.”

“You shop here? Wow, that's so crazy, right?”

Carlos ignored the fact that this was the only grocery store in Night Vale, and the fact that Cecil was being awkward. He found himself staring at Cecil's exposed midriff.

“Carlos?”

“Uhm. Yeah.”

“How are you settling in?” Cecil shifted his weight from one foot to the other, and his wispy sleeves swayed across the floor.

“Fine,” said Carlos. “Um… It’s good. Everything is… good. You know, science… and whatnot.”

“I'm glad to hear it. Anyway, I, um, should finish on with my grocery shop here, and leave you to yours.”

Carlos nodded, turning to the mac n’ cheese again, wishing he was wearing a lighter jacket. It was hot in the Ralph's today.

“I do need some macaroni, though.”

Cecil reached for a box at the same time as Carlos did, and their fingers brushed up against each other. They each pulled away, laughing awkwardly.

“I’m sorry--”

“I--”

“No, you go ahead.”

Carlos didn't move. He looked from Cecil's hand, up to his face. His breath caught in his throat.

“Sure,” he choked finally, grabbing the box off the shelf without looking and dropping it into his cart. “Thanks.”

After that second encounter, Carlos was only more determined to avoid Cecil. Well, truthfully, he wanted to spend more time with him, but he was getting feelings he didn't know how to react to and thought it would be easier to pretend that he didn't exist. Of course, listening to Cecil detail their interaction over the radio certainly didn't help.

He was lucky to have been in the car, by himself at the time of hearing the broadcast, because his fellow scientists would definitely have teased him, both for the way he acted and the way Cecil talked about him.

The next time Carlos saw Cecil, he was wearing a polka-dotted button-up tucked into a high-waisted skirt, and the fuzziest looking jacket Carlos had ever seen. He wore round, purple sunglasses, which had a third lense that covered his forehead. Previously, Carlos had been sure that the eye on Cecil's head was just a tattoo or something, but this was mildly disturbing evidence to the contrary. Or he was just very committed to the aesthetic, which did not seem unlikely, given the rest of his outfit choices.

“Hi, Carlos!”

“Cecil, hi!”

Despite not wanting eye contact before, Carlos felt mildly intimidated suddenly that he wasn't able to see Cecil's eyes. It made him feel vulnerable, for some reason. It was Cecil's outfit in general that probably intimidated him, though.

Carlos looked down to the sand-strewn pavement beneath their feet. Cecil wore knee-high black boots with a heel too high for Carlos to even imagine walking in. It definitely made him appear tall, which normally, he was not.

“How's … science? Have you found anything particularly scientific recently?”

Carlos took a small breath and allowed himself to detach from the situation. Science was something he could always talk about, no matter the circumstance or situation.

“Lots of things,” said Carlos. “...Almost everything, actually. Your town is… incredible.”

Cecil laughed, and Carlos looked up to see him blushing, and also sweating. A lot.

Carlos was sweating too. He wasn't sure if it was for the same reason.

“Everything here is… strange,” Carlos continued. “And beautiful.”

Cecil’s breath audibly caught in his throat. Carlos realized what he had done a little bit too late to stop it.

“What kinds of things?”

Carlos was glad that he couldn't see Cecil's eyes at that moment, because he would definitely not have been able to handle the eye contact.

“E-everything.” He faltered. “Science things, I mean. Like, um, the materials. And the sunsets being out of time. And loud? The sunsets are also loud.”

“They can be quite loud,” Cecil agreed. “The materials, though. You mean the materials you found in my studio?”

Carlos blanched. There hadn't really been any materials. He had been there to meet Cecil that day, and he had gotten flustered and grasped at straws for an excuse. “Um… Yes…?”

“Did you learn anything new about them?”

Carlos shook his head. “N...no.”

Cecil scratched an itch on his leg, and his hand left an imprint on his velvet skirt. Carlos stared at it. “No…” he repeated absentmindedly. “I'll, um, I'll tell you if I find anything new,” he said, promptly fleeing.

Carlos wasn't sure if it was him, or Cecil, or what, but something about Cecil was overwhelming in an unprecedented way. He would never judge someone on what they wore, or their appearance, but something about Cecil and his outfits were just… distracting. He considered himself too busy with work to unpack the reasons and feelings behind that for a long time. An entire year, actually. Apart from chance encounters here and there, he would not see Cecil without strictly and explicitly stating scientific reasons. Not that he didn't appreciate Cecil's affections… he just didn't know how to deal with them. Luckily, that only lasted a year, and it only took one near death experience to open up his eyes.

On their first date, Carlos selected one of his most stylish lab coats, in an attempt to impress Cecil with his fashion sense. Cecil had looked so dashing in his tunic and furry pants.

Carlos later learned that avant garde high fashion was not exactly Cecil's grand inspiration. He was a lot lazier with how he dressed than Carlos had imagined. Sometimes he would even sleep in one of his over-the-top outfits and wear it again the next day. He did consider himself ‘spared from the sphere’ (a notion which terrified Carlos greatly) but he wore mostly whatever he found comfortable and suiting for the day. He didn't even own a mirror, which initially struck Carlos as peculiar. This wasn't to say that he put no effort in, of course not -- he definitely went over the top for aesthetic purposes frequently. But he didn't own a mirror. He just sort of looked down at his outfit and decided, ‘sure, this works.’ Or maybe he didn't even look at all. It fascinated Carlos -- who typically spent a lot of time fussing with his hair and clothing in the mirror every morning. Many things about Cecil fascinated Carlos. But his fashion sense… Carlos had different feelings towards it than just fascination.

Night Vale was incredibly scientifically fascinating, but Carlos’ interest in their fashion wasn't really scientific. It was one part awe and two parts envy. Carlos envied Cecil. He tended to dress in ‘scientific casual’, as he called it, but he had more of an affinity for fashion than he let on…. But he had never been able to express himself that way in the outside world. He already got made fun of enough for having pierced ears… he wouldn’t dare venture into clothing items considered ‘feminine’ by the world. In Night Vale, though… no one judged. Everyone was accepting. It still took him quite a while to build up the courage, to stop hiding behind the comfort of his jeans and flannel shirts and lab coats, but he eventually brought it up to Cecil, a few weeks into their relationship. Cecil was understanding, and more than happy to help.

The first time he went clothes shopping with Cecil, Carlos almost started crying right in the middle of the store. Crop tops, skirts, sequins, glitter, tights, stilettos -- anything you could dream of -- and it was all unisex. There were dresses made for men and dresses made for women. He could wear whatever the hell he wanted and nobody would question him. No one would shout expletives at him in the streets, no one would misgender him, he had no family here to judge him... Cecil, despite his total sense of normalcy with all of this, seemed to understand perfectly. He threaded his fingers through Carlos' at his side, and softly asked: “Anything you wanna try on?”

Carlos’ eyes gleamed. “So many things.”

When he walked into the lab for the first time in a dress, he was greeted with the first catcall he had heard in quite a while.

Carlos felt a little embarrassed, but he didnt feel threatened by wolf whistles coming from his coworkers.

“Damn, boss!”

He laughed. “Got it, Nils, I’m hot. But I'm here to do my job -- be professional. I'm also,” he said pointedly, snatching his lab coat and goggles off the desk, “taken.”

Nilanjana whooped. Another scientist rolled his eyes. “Trust me, we all listen to the radio. We know.”

Carlos didn't know what to say, so he just winked at them, giving a little twirl of his dress. Nilanjana shot him a smile. “On a serious note, though,” she whispered, “I'm glad to see you embracing Night Vale fashion. It suits you.”

Carlos looked down at the dress, grinning. He thought so too.
