Okay Demigods
now that Season 2 has been confirmed (!!!!!!!!!!) I am here to make my official appeal that you ALL read the books. and yes...i mean ALL the books. Because here is what you are missing if you don't:
(mostly spoiler free. mostly vibes and chaotic no context)
OG PERCY JACKSON
Percy's INCREDIBLE sarcasm
Lots of chaotic Mr. D moments
Percy's unending absolute obliviousness when it comes to: his own abilities/powers, his own feelings towards a certain daughter of Athena, and EVERYONE'S feelings towards him
the full list of Percy's felonies (it's longer than you think!)
how much Percy thinks about Annabeth, especially in the third book
The Hunters of Artemis (everyone's like 'which godly parent would you have?' but im like ??? who cares??? I'm running off with the girls to immortal to hunt men i mean monsters)
soooooooooo much Sally Jackson is the Best Mom (to everyone who walks through her door) content
BLACKJACK. TRANS ICON BLACKJACK THE PEGASUS.
Rachel. Elizabeth. Dare. (this is how the audiobook says her name every single time)
Paul Blofis
Sally Jackson, author
Poseidon: Blowfish?
HEROES OF OLYMPUS
If you don't read these books you are missing out on some of the coolest female characters Rick has created: PIPER (an iconic), HAZEL (unintentionally hilarious), REYNA (beautiful character arc), and ANNABETH's point of view will have you loving her on a whole other level, trust me
Also: COACH HEDGE
Leo
All The Ladies Love Leo
the audiobooks are INSANE. It felt like a full cast read the book, but no. it was just one insanely talented narrator.
FESTUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS (im a dragon girlie)
Personally, I spent a lot of time reading the OG 5 wondering about how Roman mythology plays into Percy's world. Uncle Rick answered my questions and answered them SO WELL
Hazel the horse girl
Frank the horsebirddolphinman
Frank, gentle himbo, my beloved son
MY FAVORITE SCENE WHICH INVOLVES PERCY NOT KNOWING HOW TO DRIVE, A HARPY, FRANK, AND HAZEL AND THEYRE ALL SCREAMING AND IM PRETTY SURE STUFF IS ON FIRE
Forced Proximity for 7 teenagers and one chaotically violent satyr (that's Coach Hedge)
Eros/Cupid being one the most genius things Rick's ever written
Percy's hate of Ares transcending god magic
(also his love of Annabeth, but that's like obvious)
PercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabethPercabe
weird barely gnome things
this one giant whose name is definitely not pronounced like female anatomy
everyone thinking Percy and Annabeth are constantly getting up to the hanky panky
a statue made me cry
Gay Grumpy/Sunshine (or should that be Death/Sunshine) origins!!
TRIALS OF APOLLO
Apollo, vain himbo of godly proportions is forced to live as Lester Papadopoulos
Percy: why
a very chaotic twelve year old daughter of Demeter
she commands Apollo around
plant magic
terrible great haikus at the start of every chapter
Sally Jackson being the best mom to everyone who comes to her door
magic shoes
a sassy magic prophetic arrow that talks in Shakespearean English
so much gay grumpydeath/sunshine content
also yes sunshine's dad is Apollo
Apollo sings
Grover! Piper! Reyna! Hazel! All the friends! Everyone
Jason! (also im sorry)
what if there were some trees who were an elite squad of warriors who also answer to the chaotic twelve year old
gay moms of the midwest
unicorns
in the last book, chiron takes the campers on a 'field trip' to help take down the big baddie and he shows up dressed as a warrior soccer mom with granola bars, water bottles, and extra swords attached to his fanny pack
a different chaotic twelve year old while fighting to the death in a building that's on fire: "CAN WE GO ON FIELD TRIPS EVERY WEEK?"
chiron: "ROSE DEAR RAISE YOUR SWORD A LITTLE HIGHER!"
okay im not going to spoil it but in the last book there is also this extremely horrifyingly violent moment that Uncle Rick somehow turns into one of the most hilarious things i've ever read
Piper in the epilogue
CHALICE OF THE GODS
more insanely funny percy first person narration
Grover, Percy, Annabeth reunite ("the gang is back together!" "The three musketeers!" "Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey!" "Excuse me?")
have you met the god of himbos? (Percy has)
SO
MANY
EASTER
EGGS
for Season one. you can totally see how Uncle Rick worked on the script and chalice together
if you liked Annabeth shoving Percy into the water....this one is for you
Percy, supreme god of snakes
the cutest cutest cutest cutest Percabeth content you will ever read
hippie gods (yes more than one)
Percy is literally obsessed with Annabeth
Annabeth already being the Jackson daughter in law
Sally Jackson and Paul and
For the record: You CAN read Chalice of the Gods without reading the other series, but please please please read all these books. The audiobooks are phenomenal.

𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐯𝐬. 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐯𝐚 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐬 (𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬)
Whether or not you're all familiar with the Webcomic, Lore Olympus is an award-winning comic created by Rachel Smythe that's essentially about a modern retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth with various other Gods and references in it, and what not. And, assuming you have a critical eye when it comes to writing, it's has become wildly disliked and even hated by a lot of critics and former fans due to the butchering of myths and gods (and a religion), unlikeable characters, poor character design, poorer handling of sensitive topics like SA and racism, and overall the author's inability to listen and take critism that would've helped her improve.
youtube
The reason I bring this up at all is because I have the nagging fear that Helluva Boss and, by extension, Hazbin Hotel, are going to be doomed to fall into the same pit of failure as Lore Olympus is, mainly due to a nagging pattern that I've noticed between the two:
The Writers. The two are relatively close in age and, in my opinion, immaturity in writing as evidenced by the various plot inconsistencies, character treatment and development, and poor world-building established in both media. On top of that, however, both have a significantly bad reception to criticism of their work in any way, shape, or form. We've seen this before in how Viv herself states that she's been told that she can't take criticism well since she was 17.
Tumblr media
Now, it's one thing to have these claims as a teenager, it's another to have them as a fully grown adult and not learn to mature past this issue by now. The number one issue with ignoring criticism for so long, especially in your very popular work, is that eventually, it's going to show. Sooner or later, many of your fans, regardless of how they felt about your work prior, are gonna notice small flaws that gradually become bigger and more glaring the longer they are ignored.
Time and time again, this issue has arisen in Rachel Smythe's work, both in design:
As well as writing...
Speaking of which, I'm beginning to see a similarity in their writing issues in the fact that, evidently, neither creator had/has any set plan for how their stories are gonna be told. Readers of LO have seen that from the frequent additions of various, random plots with the previously established plots having not been concluded in a meaningful or tactful way, and we see this with Vivzie and Season 2.
Going off this, both Vivzie and Smythe show blatant favoritism towards their main characters or love interests that prevent other characters from having their own development (i.e., Millie), as well as keeps the main couple from having any sort of flaws that the audience would perceive as truly bad, thus removing any nuance to them.
We see this in Persephone and her character:
And we see the same with Stolas and Blitzo, mainly in regards to Stolas' past and situation with Stella, as well as Blitzø's own past as we're made to constantly feel bad for him despite him not being the victim. It's made worse since we've yet to know what he did to every single person he's wronged, but, for that, I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt until we see more of Season 2.
Lastly, and probably the most glaring thing for me, both Smythe and Vivize take inspiration from real-world religions (RS –> Greek Polytheism; Vivzie –> Christianity/Demonology). These religions are both widespread in their popularity and, thus, are important to millions around the world. Because of this, both should surely have a sense of obligation to not bastardize the stories and characters they referenced in their work and/or should make their likeness relatively similar to their original works so others who know of it are familiar with the characters.
Both creators have failed to do so at some point in time and have gone so far as to push the blame on their audience rather than admit fault and work to improve.
Viv with Beelezbub
Tumblr media
And Smythe with Persephone and the other gods/Goddesses:
Worst yet, both use social media as a means of weaponizing their fanbase against those who have a few critiques about each work of media. Now, what I can say for Viv is that the severity of these issues hasn't fully hit her yet, whereas Smythe, despite her awards, is feeling the brunt of her poor writing choices from former fans and readers. While Helluva Boss is more new and doesn't hold as much overwhelming significance to me, I've been with Hazbin Hotel since the beginning before the pilot even aired.
It's because of this that my greatest concern is that if Viv doesn't start seeing through these issues within Helluva Boss and, really, herself, then both shows may be doomed to fail, without Hazbin airing in its entirety. Worse yet, it would be a major blow for fellow indie creators who look up to her as an inspiration, so I really hope she doesn't reach RS's level of infamy in her work. 🙏
*PS: For a better Lore Olympus's viewing experience, I recommend this:

Greek mythology: A first masterpost
I finally decided to put together a masterpost gathering my posts about Greek mythology and Greek gods! I probably won’t get everything, because they are scattered throughout years of this blog, but you will have here all of the most recent ones!
Fighting the Misconceptions about Greek Mythology and Gods
The Hades/Zeus case
The Zeus case: Why such a messy love life? Part 1 and part 2 and
TV Tropes’ fanciful interpretation of Greek mythology: weird details and why the gods do not have a psychology and why them having a Classical Mythology page bothers me . Plus one of the problems of TV tropes (and the Internet as a whole) when receiving Greek myths . Plus my original post depicting my problem with TV tropes’ take on Greek myths.
Do not make things bigger than they were
Why are gods depicted old? (I will probably develop this little joke post into a bigger one later)
We always know but one version of a myth
The three interpretations of Greek mythology - by the Greeks themselves
The five things that, for me, make a “bad” Greek mythology interpretation or adaptation
I hijacked a post to talk about Riordan’s take on Greek gods (with some Lore Olympus in it): part 1 - part 2 - part 3
Various mythological details and topics
Zeus had others wives, you know?
My reaction to “Blood of Zeus”
A whole discussion about the fatness of Dionysos in art and media
I can’t praise enough the Greek mythology season of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller
Hephaestus, the straightest of all the gods?
Why not a black-haired Apollo?
A random detail about the Apollo/Helios situation
How many Muses? (This post was supposed to be the intro to a longer series looking at groups of Greek goddesses and deities in mythology such as the Charites or the Erynies, but given its low success the series was “cancelled”)

Ok, now that the first pjo season is finally over (😭) I want to share my pitch for the future adaptations from the Riordanverse, because since daydreaming is for free I will now pretend I work with Rick and Disney and tell you what I'd do if I were their Kevin Feige.
First of all, do we all agree that if Heroes of Olympus really gets adapted it should be a separate show, and not PJO 6th season, right?? I hope so because they're completely different stories. So, if we will already get 2 connected shows, why can't we get more?
And maybe it's because I'm a big marvel fan but I really believe in the power of crossovers. There's something magical about seeing characters originally from two different worlds/stories interacting with each other, and I'm not only referring to the MCU. I mean, remember the episode where Hannah Montana and the Wizards of Waverly Place all went aboard on Zack and Cody's cruise ship?? Or when all the Disney Princesses appeared together on Ralph Breaks the Internet???
So imagine having 2 original spin-offs released in the years between each season from PJO. That way we would get the chance to meet not only Camp Jupiter but also some of the characters who are originally from there before HOO.
My idea of a title for the first show is "The Children of Rome", and the story would be set right after the events from Sea of Monsters/PJO Season 2, where we would follow Reyna as one of the main characters and all the journey she went through after her encounter with Percy and Annabeth on Circe's Island.
From being kidnapped by pirates to being trained by the wolf Lupa (which I think it would be really nice to actually see, since we only got a brief explanation of how it works in the books) until she finally arrives at Camp Jupiter and is first welcomed by Jason. Here I think there's even a great opportunity for a parallel between him and Thalia, since season 2 will have ended with Thalia resurrection and her iconic line (that could be adapted so to fit her last name) "I am Thalia Grace daughter of Zeus", so Jason's first introduction could be with him saying "I am Jason Grace son of Jupiter" (I already have chills only from imagining the scenes).
This could be a 3 or 4 seasons show, where we would see Reyna and Jason ascending to Praetor and their battle with the titan Krios, and in the last season (after PJO’s last season) we would see Nico's, Hazel's and Frank's arrival, wrapping the series with Jason disappearing.
Now for my second spin-off idea, it would be set after Titan's Curse/Season 3 and we would follow The Hunters of Artemis, which is already a great title by itself, and I would be satisfied with only one season but I would definitely not mind if we got more!
It would be a simpler show, with basically badass (ace) girls adventures, to see what they've been up to during the events of book/season 4, while we also get to know more of Thalia, her past trauma and how she misses her brother since she doesn't know he's alive. The Demigod Files story, The Sword of Hades, where Percy, Nico and Thalia go to the underworld and meet Bob could even happen in this show through her pov, that way we would understand better why she got so shaken with their encounter with the goddess of ghosts and regrets.
All of that would be a nice contrast with Jason's journey, since he was too young when he got to the Camp and doesn't remember much from his past with the exception that he was abandoned, so he doesn't even imagine that there's someone who cares and misses him. All of this would culminate in HOO first season when they finally get reunited.
No, it’s not a coincidence that I’m focusing a lot on Jason, but ironically the reason for that is not because he’s my favorite character, actually between the seven demigods from the prophecy he’s one of my least favorite, and I hardly ever find people in the fandom who has him as their favorite, which I think is pretty sad (specially now that I finally finished reading The Trials of Apollo, because I honestly I want to scream everytime I think about how much he is underrated and poorly explored as a character).
What I believe to be the reason for all of this is that, even though they’re nothing alike, Jason is often compared to Percy due to both being the son of one of the most powerful gods in Olympus and pretty much the leaders of their respective Camps. But that’s still not a fair comparison, because it’s like “who do you prefer, the boy we’ve known for 5 books already in which we got to first know this amazing world through his eyes, thoughts and feelings… or this dude we just met and that people say to be as good as him?”
Not only that, but between all the new characters we get to know in HOO (if I remember correctly) Jason is the one with less flashbacks scenes, and I get that this happened because he lost his memory, but this makes that most of the information we have about Jason's past is told to us, and not showed.
So, deep down, we know why Jason's personality is so different from Percy's. We know he'd struggled since he was a little kid due to the pressure of being raised to be a leader in such a cold and harsh environment. We know that even though he was immensely admired in Camp Jupiter he was still deeply lonely and insecure, mainly because of the lack of a parental figure to give him unconditional love making him believe that he only had value if he was of use.
We know he is incredibly powerful and led the Camp through tones of victories. But we haven't seen any of this half as much as we've seen him getting hit on the head, so in the end that's how he's most remembered: a nice and serious guy that got hit a lot on the head.
A spin of series would give the fans a chance of really seeing all that and understanding Jason (and other characters like Reyna and Thalia) better. And, again, it might be simply because I'm a huge MCU fan, but I truly believe that if we got to meet the roman characters and camp before HOO the feeling of seeing those worlds collapsing together and interacting would be so powerful!!
In the books what happen is that we see characters that we don't know yet (therefore don't like yet) arriving at a place and meeting characters that we already love, and then in the second book is the opposite, we see a character that we already love arriving at a place and meeting characters that we don't know yet (again, therefore don't like yet). But if we got to meet everyone separately all we would feel right away is excitement!
I’m not in any way trying to demerit the books!! It’s just that now with the series we have the chance of doing something new, of really adapting this story to a new media format in the best way possible! And, since the spin-offs would be original stories, the writers and Rick not only would have the opportunity to create more freely but also to surprise the fans who had read the books already.
I’ve been sitting on this Idea since the Disney+ show was announced and I know the odds of it happening are pretty low, but I decided to share this idea with othe people who also loves these books so we can freak out together.

hermesmyplatonicbeloved/736291374126743552/ive-seen-a-lot-of-hermes-lin-manuel-miranda?source=share
I just think Lin-Manuel needs to stay away from Disney and challenge himself as an actor, therefore, I am disappointed in him for being in a Disney+ show. Like.. come on, man. You can do better than this! This show is a huge downgrade from Lee Scoresby! He definitely has the range and talent for complicated, in-depth character kind of roles! Also, being a theater kid at heart, I can see him being versatile with his physical appearance and want to use SFX makeup. I want him to be versatile with his roles too - let's see him be a cold-hearted psychopath in a thriller film and then a heartthrob doctor in another, for example. RANGE. He can do it, I know, and it'll certainly surprise everyone, especially his (die-hard) fans. I don't know if you're a fan of him or even care, but I just felt like sharing this.
Xx
Do not interact if you don't like pjo Hermes or think he's a horrible father. Keep scrolling. I'm neutral about Lin Manuel. I haven't followed his career; I've only seen a few episodes of his character in dark artifacts.
Okay so the thing is. Hermes is actually a really complicated character. He loves his son, Luke. He also believes that his fate - everyone's fate is set in stone, and nothing he does (as a father or even as a god) can change anyone's fate, especially his son.
But despite this, Hermes is so sorrowful at the fact that his son is going to die in pain that he still tries to bring Luke back to him via Percy and Annabeth. He watches Luke, nearly constantly/as much as he can even when Luke turns enemy. Out of pain/sorrow; he still continue to fight for Luke despite the fact that Hermes himself acknowledges that he's just making it worse. (Yes, I am calling Hermes a hypocrite - please know I say it with love; he's still my fav character).
On top of that, Hermes doesn't have the same kind of power Poseidon and Hades have, so he can't outright break Zeus's laws without ending up punished like Dionysus. Of course there's the other option - If Hermes loves Luke so much why doesn't he switch sides, join Luke against Olympus? Hermes 1. knows Olympus is going to win, 2. has self preservation (Zeus would punish him harshly if he switched sides) and 3. that would take away from Luke's redemption point: dying to do the right thing aka. dying a hero.
So yeah. Hermes has a lot of emotional turmoil going on. Nearly all of it is angst and love and tragedy. He has the depth. Imo playing Hermes is a worthy role. And with so few scenes, I feel like Lin has his work cut out for him. I'm just worried about Rick fucking up the interpretation of Hermes he established in the original series.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts!! All the Lin hate was getting to me and I'm not even a Lin fan - I can't imagine what it's been like for you. And Lin can definitely explore those other roles/genres - Hermes is probably going to be in only 1-2 episodes per season, and on top of that only appearing for a few minutes at a time. Like this is probably barely a part time job for him. He's not doing this full time. It's a lil fun side piece.

Yesterday I came to the realization that there are very few legitimate Percy Jackson/TMNT crossovers anywhere. So I've decided to do it myself, specifically using RotTMNT. By doing this I also decided to make a demigod turned mutant oc!
Meet Rhodes Valentine!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rhodes was a 17 year old daughter of Aphrodite(They/She).
Their first name, Rhodes, comes of greek origin meaning "where roses grow". Rose is not only the main color shown on Rhodes but also one of Aphrodite's sacred flowers.
Her last name, Valentine, is a french last name. Their father was French, which is how she got it, and it also makes reference to Valentines Day, the day of love. And also Paris, France is the city of love so I thought it was appropriate.
Lastly, their mutated form. She is a butterfly mutant, chosen because a butterfly is one of Aphrodite's sacred animals. Their powers include charmspeak and being able to tell peoples feelings, from before she mutated, and a way of drawing people away through scent. Their wings look very liquidy and match her tears right? That's cause they are like perfume. They can choose any scent and use to draw people either towards her or away from them.
She was mutated after the season 2 finale, for Rise, and post-Blood of Olympus/pre-Trials of Apollo, for pjo.

Chapter analysis 218
Now I don't fully mind this chapter, I really do like the hypnos and I think it's a decent transition chapter to the next big plot points.. sort of kinda.. my reactions are mixed.
To start on a very positive note, I fucking love hypnos. This is sarcasm done decently well, along with him calling hades out on his shit is what I desperately needed. Also... I fine it pretty fun that he's just casually dicks out the whole time.
Tumblr media
Now I think it's just a problem with the webtoon spacing but this episode that like... a weird completely blank panel before the title that isn't really on any of the other episodes but again that's a generally small mistake that's not that big a deal.
Now my biggest problem with this chapter is that it has ANOTHER GOD DAMN FLASH BACK. Like jesus even single flash back we get makes me think that season 2 should've ended right after the trail and we should've had season 3 be the ten year time skip, then have a fourth season with all the current shit. Like I went back and counted, out of the 12 episodes we have depending on how you count its either 5 or 6 episodes with out flashbacks... and there are three episodes that are ALL flashbacks.
Tumblr media
If a story has a timeskip but then spends half the time after it to have flash backs.. you shouldn't have done that timeskip. If y'all want to see good time-skips read land of the lustrous. It has multiple massive time skips from anywhere from a month to ten thousand years but it works cause of how to ties into the story. Each time-skip is used to amplify the Main characters isolation, memory loss, and to show the stagnation of the immortal world they live in. The only flash back the land of the lustrous has is a few panels during exposition of event that happened before the story starts, and it never has flash backs to the timeskips.
In Lore olympus the time skip is used to... be able to have romantic moment between the important plot shit. It just feel clunky and makes each episode feel like each one should be done better... the suspense it would build for the kronos plot if done in order, seeing the progression of Persephones powers, seeing hades and Persephone grow apart from each other. Just... it would have been so so much better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now to another thing I really didn't like about this chapter is just.. how hades doesn't have his priorities straight. Hades is supposed to be you know focused how kronos did alot of fucked up shit, but he's worried about wine and hypnos using a doorway to go a realm. Like hades, your more worried about getting paid then not having an hr department.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though again Hypnos calling hades out on his shit along, along with his general vibe and look is a great change of pace. It doesn't feel like lampshading.. tho it's honestly probably what it was for, to have Hades mess up acknowledged but then ignored.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That and also.. I really hope we get more of Morpheus mainly cause of the trans representation... that was never mentions in the story. Like christ when scrolling through the comments I saw two calling Morpheus a 'genderswap'.. so it's clear that even people who have knowledge of the original greek morpheus just think this one is a women and not a trans women.. and it sucks cause this representation sucks.
Tumblr media
Another main problem is again.. the fertility powers that are just a catch all. Why is the tree persephone grew more connected to her fertility powers and not her plant ones? why is just being near the tree enough to give kronos a bunch of power? It's very much just a catch all power that can just be... anything. Also it's really sucks that the fertility powers never really tie into the whole "deconstruction of purity culture".. it's almost never mention to her sexuality in any way.. like the closest they get to that is apollo but that plot has been shaved down and ignored to basically nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing that is really annoying me is how serious scenes are undercut by goofy faces. Which really terribly shown in this episode... like we see hypnos be imprisoned and like have this honestly AMAZING shot of hypnos being inside kronos rib cage like a prison. Like that really cool idea that could have been a completely terrifying panel... but then rs gave hypnos one of the "funny" faces.. tat just completely ruins it. Especially taking into account that he is canonically being fucking tortured. Please please someone redraw this panel and make it look more serious.. cause holy shit I love and hate this panel so much.
Tumblr media
Now I don't fully mind the while child god thing... yet, Its really to early to form any opinions on it till we actually first learn who it is and see how it's dealt with but having the big important plot point lead into a "harhar persephone hot joke" just... the pacing the clash in vibes is just bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again this chapter highlights how bad the transition after the kronos fight was, instead of having a scene catching up with these characters we get persephone admitting to basically ignoring eros... Also like damn eros good job as stealing my insult about her outfit before I even thought of it!
The outfit itself just clashes with her outfits before, Persephone has been shown to prefer longer tight dress, sweater and similar things. This just... isn't it, it feels off and the whole banana purse thing looks odd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll talk about the whole sex conversation with the next chapter.. what I wanna cover is just how.. they talk like a teenage rom-com that's desperately trying to keep a pg-13 rating so talk like middle schoolers who get nervous by just saying the word sex. It just feels.... off..

REALLY FAST ANALYSIS OF THE NEW TRAILER and MY THOUGHTS ON IT
Baby percy is adorable, o shots of sally’s face
MET scene, original trailer scene
Special thing is a good word choice to hide behind since neurodivergent people are ‘special’ and it’s likely what Percy thinks Chiron is referring to.
My analysis earlier on the Variety was stuck between Montauk or Ares but how I’m sure it’s Ares
The head shot looks really good for Medusa since it’s not just 1 or 3 snakes but like 50 or so
The Underworld is going to be hell since it looks like it’s going to be super foggy
Clarisse bullying sceneeeee!! The actress somehow pulls off a resting bitch face and aggressive. I love how we also see the kids milling in the background!
The minotaur is definitely more bulllike than the books but it makes it scarier somehow???
Posidon shot is straight out of the last episode, the bolt is also from the last episode when Percy’s going up to Olympus
In love with the Big House windows they give it an old but diy feeling
The joy on Clarisse’s face when she lights Maimer stoooppp
I KNOW NEW JERSEY WHEN I SEE IT
The creepy bald lady i’m pretty sure is the Neried forming it was just on a different frame than the one they plucked for the trailer
LEAH IS SO PRETTY, she looks all serious too
Aryan looks so happy in so many scenes when he looks sad we know something bad just happened ugggghhh.
THE WINDOW WIPE FOR ANNABETH’s HAT. there’s just a small zing! and she’s gone
Luke’s actor is hella fine, I’m going to love hating the character so hard because he seems like someone who could pull off sympathetic looking but hella evil
Also everyone hurls themselves on the floor when Percy shoots I love it. He misses, the Apollo kids look so freaked out along which the Hermes kids. Luke was being so inspirational and Percy just FAILS.
Also disabled camper spotted either Demeter or Ares Cabin guessing by the jewellery on her arms but maybe Aphrodite???
Eveyone yells at Percy not SHOOT AGAIN ITS SO FUNNY ISTG
AHHH Waterland!!! Annabeth just looks tired but also like she’s having fun being with Percy
Percy on Olympus, Annabeth says “you still don’t know where you fit into all this?” I wonder if it could be before Capture the Flag or after the claiming that Annabeth instigated
Amtrak! I thought Annabeth was stabbed but never mind looking fierce though
Yup cloudy as shit, very monochrome, the guards looked cool though.
The lotus hotel is so florescent I can’t.
HERMES IS THERE??? HE WASNT THERE ORIGINALLY WHY IS HE HERE? Also I forgot Lin was Hermes I thought he was a cameo.
Percy jumping over shit I love him
Fight with Minotaur, Minotaur is scary, I think the show is trying to show that Sally really was a good candidate for Oracle by giving her a prophetic sensibility around her
Fun clip splice at the end the Chimera is literally terrifying what the hell. like it looks silly but from the angle it’s introduced it sends chills down my spine.
I think they’re keeping a lot of Annabeth & Grover’s story out of it to make them the emotional backbone of the story in the next 2 seasons and so on so forth. It makes sense since TLT was about Percy, TSM relied on Grover and Annabeth, TTC relied on Thalia, BotL relied on Annnabeth and Nico, TLO relied on Percy again. Rick can add more hints and Chekhov’s Guns now but he also can’t pull them all at once now because he wants this show renewed for another season.
My advice is to keep cool when we don’t get a ton of Grover & Annabeth’s story and riot if Season 2 doesn’t deliver but right now the show is trying to get newer and younger fans (as seen with it being followed right up by What If… in an attempt to get more people to jump into Disney+ and then scroll through once they finish watching whatever episode just ended to the new stuff) but I think it looks good there’s a lot of deliberate representation and diversity in the show and as spoilery as the trailer scenes we haven’t seen the actual meeting with Hades, Zeus and the other Olympians, no Dionysus lines or anything from New Jersey or the Lotus Hotel in truth.

Important Announcement!
Captain jellyfish will no longer be updating on tumblr, but on it's own website!
Tumblr media
Honestly, the tumblr version was a bit behind in chapters due to me keep forgetting to update it, but now they're all there lol. I wanted everyone to just be in one spot as opposed to being spread out between Webtoon, Tapas, and Tumblr. I'll go into more thoughts/reasons for leaving webtoon under the cut, but it's kind of long, so if you just want to bookmark it for later, here's the google doc link for it.
[Content Warning for mentions of racism, grooming/pedophila, and miscarriage.] As of September 20th, 2023, I, Enit, will no longer be updating my comic Captain Jellyfish on Webtoon or Tapas.  I’ve had my share of problems with the two platforms(although mainly Webtoon) for the past couple of years now, but I don’t want to just ignore them anymore.  For starters, I don’t like how Webtoon ignores most of their creators in favor of one or two series.  There are so many incredible and talented authors all over their platform, but instead they choose to only advertise Lore Olympus, a series whose numbers have been going downhill since Season 2 ended.  A series that I would argue is morally bankrupt and has been since the very beginning.  A series that they’re so protective over that they’ll copyright strike videos of small creators for “daring” to criticize their flagship series that struggles to break 100k likes per week on the new chapters.
Tumblr media
The creator of Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe, has a history of reacting with hostility/passive aggressiveness to any criticism of her webcomic, deleting any within her discord and the official Facebook group for LO.  She’s gone so far as to go to fan facebook groups to complain about them allowing criticism for her webcomic, and getting upset when they boot her out for her shitty behavior.  Webtoon tacitly encouraging Smythe’s behavior doesn’t end there however, as they have also allowed Snailord’s (creator of Death:Rescheduled) harassment towards someone who is likely a child (based off the demographics of people who read/use Webtoon), yet in both instances(and probably more) they have remained silent.  While I understand that they cannot control their creators, they should not be turning the other way and twiddling their thumbs while their employees shit over their company’s reputation.   Webtoon not only doesn’t care about what their paid creators say, but they don’t care about their creators’ health, both in a physical and mental sense.  They simply do not care about the time and energy needed to create a comic, they only care about the money they can make off of their creators’ hard work, with the most egregious and shameful incident involving the artist/creator Summer Light who made the Webtoon/Tapas series “Roxana: How to Protect the Heroine’s Older Brother.  She was treated incredibly poorly by the company/her producer, being denied maternity leave with the stress of the workload placed upon her resulting in her suffering a miscarriage.
Real quick before I go onto my next point, I need to explain how these creators make money off of Webtoon.  To those who don’t know, Originals creators make money off their fastpass episodes after the “minimum threshold” of coins used to buy one of their episodes is met, with the coins used to purchase the episode before the minimum threshold going into the pocket of Webtoon.  What is this “minimum threshold” you ask?  Good question!  Nobody knows!  The people who need to know when it’s been met so they know that they’re being paid don’t know.  Originals creators have had to regularly fight just to know what their analytics are, and even then they don’t get a fucking response.  I know that as a(now former) Canvas creator that Webtoon deletes the data for your analytics/performance every month, so if it’s August 1 and you forgot to record the data from how your comic performed in June, you are plain out of luck because you’re never seeing that data ever again.  This isn’t even mentioning how Webtoon underpays their Latin American and South American creators, and how there’s vast differences in the payments per chapters for each of the Originals creators.
Tumblr media
This leads us to today:  the recent controversy surrounding the Webtoon Original, Get Schooled, and how it should have never made it this far.  For those of you out of the loop, I highly recommend viewing this post here as the reddit post by Kendrillon summarizes/recorded just what the Hell happened with episode 125 and how webtoon/the author responded to the backlash far better than I could.  I’m not here to say how betrayed I feel as a fan of the series, I’ve never read it before and I only just learned about what the plot for the series pertained, and to be honest I don’t think that it would be my cup of tea.  What I am here for is to ask just how the editor didn’t shut this episode down when it was still in the scripting and storyboarding phase?  While I understand that most of the editors are overworked with all the comics they’re managing, I don’t see how something this huge could’ve been missed.  The editor should have said something when the N word showed up, but instead they let it slide and now they have this whole mess on their hands with Get Schooled being pulled from the platform.
While it’s good that for once Webtoon took accountability for their actions, this brings up another question: why aren’t they deleting other series on their site that also have harmful content? The Fate by AirisKiahin/YumiCH is a comic where the teacher is in a romantic/sexual relationship with his 17 year old student that he groomed.  It is labeled as romance/slice of life.  The story does not acknowledge how fucked up it is that he’s grooming his student.  At the time of writing it has over 11 million views.
Tumblr media
Despite videos covering this comic gaining views in the millions(even if you can’t really tell at the moment due to one of the authors copyright striking them/getting them taken down(13))the story is still up.  Now in general I’m anti-censorship.  In a way I sort of have to be as a queer person, as many cries for censorship(EX: Kink, drugs, violence) quickly leads into the censorship and erasure of discussing/talking about things like LGBTQ identity, racism, criticism of government, etc.  That being said, there still needs to be some form of censorship as to avoid harm from happening(there’s a reason “Mein Kampf” generally is no longer in circulation(no I am not saying The Fate is on the same level as a book used as reasoning to push propaganda/commit genocide)), and I believe The Fate falls under this category.  The webcomic pushes the idea that it’s “cute” and “romantic” for an adult to have inappropriate relationships with a minor, which is especially concerning when you factor in that Webtoon’s main audience is comprised of 13 - 24 year olds.  This romanticization of grooming and abuse shouldn’t be shown to such a vulnerable group of people, and it’s shameful that Webtoon has yet to take down such a vile series on their platform.
I’ll admit that I have other qualms about Webtoon(lack of customisation options, inability to view/create comments on the website, clear favoring of their Originals creators, etc), but they all seem so dumb to me in the face of all the other things they’ve done and continue to do.  In the beginning I almost didn’t want to even publish Captain Jellyfish on Webtoon because of their shady practices, but I knew that I would be missing out on the largest comic website due their monopoly over the webcomic scene.  I eventually settled on updating on both Webtoon and Tapas, but even then I felt unsatisfied.  Many of the same base, quality of life things about Webtoon carried onto Tapas, and even though I don’t hear nearly as much drama coming out of Tapas as I do Webtoon, I’ve still heard about them doing shady things in the past like trying to have the power to control when/if a series gets a physical release and “losing” track of where the money from the ink used to purchase episodes went. Webtoon and other sites fumbling with their user bases has made me paranoid that Tapas will be the next website to make a dumb change that no one likes but we’ll all be stuck with because the people running the site don’t care.
With all of this in mind I was a bit shocked when the possibility that I could host my comic on Neocities came up.  For those of you who don’t know, Neocites is a free website hosting platform that allows their users to create a website for free(as long as it’s under 1 GB), and if you needed more space, you could upgrade to a supporter for $5.00 a year in exchange for 50 GB of storage.  With Neocities I could fully customize the entire website for my comic, I could include gifs, music, author updates, truly whatever I wanted!  There was one thing stopping me initially from jumping right in to learning how to code so I could make my dream a reality: the fear of missing out.  I was afraid that when I moved websites that no one would want to read my comic anymore, or that by moving sites that I would miss out on my “big break” on Webtoon.  In a way I’m still scared of those things, but I have to move on.  I had already completed the bulk of the website, but I had sat on it for a few months before I went all in, and the longer that I sat on it, the stronger my desire to move websites grew.  I could literally have everything that I wanted, who cares if my reader count or whatever grows a bit slower than before?  I was already buried under all the other Canvas series, I might as well just move on from the bridge and step on the island already.
I won’t be deleting the series off Webtoon and Tapas, not only for archival purposes, but I have a bunch of posts linking people there.  If you see that it’s no longer on Webtoon or Tapas, then either the sites started letting ai leech off the art there/started doing nfts, or they deleted me off the platform because they’re mad at me for writing this lmao.  I appreciate Webtoon and Tapas for helping me to grow an initial reader base, but it’s time for me to move on.  To those of you who’ve supported Captain Jellyfish so far, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.  You have no idea how much I appreciate you reading your comments and hearing what you think, and it honestly makes my day when someone says that they enjoyed reading my silly magical girl story.  If you read all of this, thank you for reading my small essay, and I hope to see you at the new website <3

The retelling of Medusa's story isn't getting better
A review of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season one
I've not read the source material, but from what I watched, the series is a generic mainstream fantasy show, with Percy being the blandest protagonist ever, despite everyone else around him stating he is special, he literally does and says nothing that resonates this specialness.
Particularly, the thing I found irksome is the third episode where Percy goes on to kill Medusa. Sure, the show made a point that she is no mere monster and included her origin story, but, she is still seen as a quest to be accomplished, and she gets beheaded anyway ( just censoring that with the invisible cap doesn't make it less brutal, I also saw people applauding the invisible cap treatment, as if women being brutalised is okay as long as they are brutalised in a more humane way😂), and furthermore, her head is shipped to Olympus like a common parcel. None of the micro progressive changes matter, because she still ends up the way she is in the original story. I'm not against female characters dying, but female characters dying in a tropey and pointless way.
Tumblr media
Let's look at the original Greek mythology, it is a story so well-known that non-classics-professionals are familiar with. The essence of the story boils down to: 1) Medusa is a victim of feudal misogyny and victim blaming; 2) she is being objectified as a quest to conquer and a weapon to use even after her death. The original story is ugly. If you want to keep the story as it is, you have to keep the ugliness too, no wishy-washy sanitisation is going to make it "better". One good way to handle this is to acknowledge the ugliness and offer modern critique, especially in a fantasy show set in contemporary times. The series' way of handling is dodgy, since it is literally a retelling that preserves the core element of the original story invented thousands of years ago, without any updated criticism. (Well, if I want the original version of the story, I'd read a non-fiction book about this matter, not watch a modern fantasy story.)
Perhaps my disappointment came from my expectation that I hoped Medusa could somehow become an ally without having to die, since it's the 2020's now, we probably moved on from the binary hero-vs-monster trope. I still remember that episode from the 90's Hercules cartoon series I watched as a kid (also produced by Disney) in which Hercules came to understand that not all monsters are malefic, and he makes friends with Medusa in the end; more importantly, Medusa lives. This is yet another good way to reimagine the old myth by taking a wild leap. It's sort of sad that a silly cartoon show made more than twenty years ago has a more nuanced understanding than our current production.
Tumblr media
How we view non-human beings in the fantasy world, more or less, reflects our attitude on other people who are different from ourselves in real life.
