WIP Questionnaire ±1
To be honest, I keep looking for these as an excuse to talk about my work
This one I got from @illarian-rambling, I wasn't tagged in her post but I accepted the open invitation However, since this is how my mind works, I'll turn this into a game. Updated Rules: 1. Answer as few or as many of the following questions as you'd like! 2. In passing the tag along to others, you can add one question of your own, or replace an existing question.
1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?
The magic system. It took years for the idea to finally click in my head, too. It started when I watched the Terrible Writing Advice on Myths, Legends, and Gods; JP just had to challenge me with "A pantheon of the Periodic Table would be way too big". So I said "Alright, bet", but the idea still wasn't there. Then, I finally began watching ATLA and Breaking Bad (very late to both parties), and then my brain went: "What if... chemistrybending?"
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
Probably a more light-hearted version of "Can You Hear The Music" from Oppenheimer.
3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?
Hydrogen, Admiral Wright, and Miilo Saba. Hydrogen is the Elemental of their namesake atom, and I attempted to write them as wholesome and eccentric. I would liken them to a much older and wiser version of the Collector from The Owl House. They also wield a flaming shortsword, and can turn invisible (since hydrogen gas is invisible by default). Admiral Wright is the main antagonist of volume one. She was the first woman (and still only one of two) to be fully commissioned in the Lodinican Republic Navy, and is otherwise known as its toughest commander. Her backstory is a commentary on how simply letting marginalized people into unchanged power structures doesn't change their marginalizing nature. Miilo Saba is the older cousin of the twins Lia and Lioko, and he's the captain of an anarchist smuggler ship. He's mostly light-hearted and laid-back, except in a situation where there's no messing around, in which case he can become deadly serious. Why? To be honest, I picked these three because they were the most engaging for me to write.
4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
Likely the animated ones I've mentioned before: ATLA (Legend of Korra included) and The Owl House, plus other animated shows like Steven Universe. The book will include illustrations a la The Chronicles of Narnia, except in an art style that would easily translate to 2-D animation.
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
Holding myself to the standards of good writing. In particular, character writing and depth of worldbuilding.
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
I have sea wyverns, which are about twice as big as an albatross; landback tortoises, which are somewhat of a grounded take on the mythological giant turtle/tortoise trope; and more minor appearances like torpedo-fish (fish that can swim up to 80 knots in short bursts) and taransis, cat-sized Lucas-the-Spiders.
7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
The equivalent era to our world is the 1910s-early 1920s. There are ocean liners, trains, and horses, and the occasional airship, while cars are still rather new.
8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?
I am almost done, thank God. I'm planning to take spring quarter off from community college to finish it.
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
The novelty of its magical premises and take on the fantasy genre. Perhaps its politics, too, but those are more of a background thing.
10. What are your hopes for your wip?
I hope it's as original as I claim it to be! A pipe dream of mine is that the complete series financially sustains me, but I'll just retire to a commune upstate if that doesn't happen.

Kirbious
A Eleven year old boy named Toby Watson reported dead. They were playing on their DS. And the game was Kirby super star ultra. They're heart was ripped out and inpaled and their ribs exposed through their chest. And their eyes were bloodshot red and blood drained through their eyesockets and blood stained on the DS screen.
Soon, As I get home from school. As I go to my room. A mysterious DS came card is on my bed. As I grab it. It's Kirby Super Star Ultra,
But the first K is backwards. As I then grab my DS and put the game in without caring where it came from. I boot my game and start playing. As I play. The nice tune in the intro is normal. Nothing suspicious,
And as I go on files. There's already a file called "Kirbious 606"
As I stare at it for a good minute.
"That sounds like Morbious.." I say. Then I click on that file for fun. Then I see a red screen flashing red and pink very fast. It hurts my eyes and then it goes to the game menu.
"What the Flip-hat??"
I yell, as then. I go play on Spring breeze.
And when I play. The game is nothing but fine, until as I play mid game. A black figure follows me. It looks exactly like kirby. But he is pure black instead of his happy pink tone. And his stubby toes are bloodshot red and his eyes are flashy red. And he then follows my character throughout the game. Until I get to the final boss (took 3-5 hours)
As I fight Mark soul, he stopped followed me. He looked rather. Scared. He runs away
"Coward!" I yell at the dark Kirby, as I then finally beat Mark soul,
Instead of his normal scream be makes when he gets cut in half. He makes a literal girl screech as if the person who made it was actually dying. I jumped out of my chair and tried to turn my volume down the best I could. It scares me to death. My heart still racing. Then the game goes black for 10 minutes.
As I sip my soda through my McDonald's straw a horrifying jumpscare of a realistic Black Kirby up-close with gritted teeth and thin bloodshot red eyes staring deep into my soul, and scares me. I instantly close my DS and throw it in my trashcan without thinking and hide in my blankets. After a minute ot two. I grab the game and try to play again.
And as the intro comes. It shoes the same thing. But instead of it saying
"Kirby super star ultra"
It just says "Kirbious 606"
With the dark kirby in the screen instead of Kirby, and it really hit me.
This game is cursed..
I tried to turn it off. But the ds itself wouldn't budge.
Now this is damn shit cursed.
As then the screen turned black.
And tiny words came on screen.
And it allowed me to talk back..
Kirbious: hello dear..
Michael: uhh new phone who dis?
Kirbious: ah yes. Well some call me. The black figure. Or perhaps dark kirby.. or maybe.. Kirbious.
Michael: what do you want from me?
Kirbious: I used to be like you.
Michael: humam..?
Kirbious: correct.
Then a image appeared in my head,
Of a boy with black hair with a bowlcut
Pale skin And overalls. And he had his legs chopped off and left to die next to a tree. And he was holding a Kirby super star ultra ds card.
And my head ached,
Kirbious: well-
Do u perhaps know why u can't stop playing..?
Michael: ...
Kirbious: I've made it so whoever plays. Can never stop. Their too addicted to it. And then. That's when I come in..
Michael: what did you doo to Toby??
Kirbious: I took their soul..
Michael: what the hell are you..?
Kirbious: give me your soul..
And the game itself crashed and static sounds were
playing even if the volume was off. And then drilling sounds began. It wasn't from outside. The neighbors
weren't doing yard work. It was from the game. Even if the sound was off. And then a rythem of screams began and I accidentally
through my ds down the stairs and a blue screen turned
on and white words I couldn't see and beeping sounds. My mom ran in
"Michael Lawrence! Why the hell did you throw your ds down the stairs??"
She demanded.
I then ran down to grab it. "Sorry. It er.. slipped out of my hands!" I quickly told.
"Nope. I'm talking it from you for the day,"
She took it and put it high on a shelf.
Then on my computer I had then searched about the image that appeared in my head. And I found a article. "A boy who had served legs and left to die"
As I clicked on it. It showed the image of the boy in a hospital. His name was
"Clen K. Mitchell" and he was only Eleven. Like Toby, and it occurred around August 2013. And then it said the killer was unknown. And he had died.
But why was he holding a Kirby super star ultra ds card in the image that was in my head. And is this boy Kirbious..
At midnight I got out of bed and climbed the shelf and took the ds and ran back And hid
under my blanket and played the game. As then. The scary intro played. But then. Kirbious had then became a playable character. As I played as him instead of Kirby. He was faster. He ran instead of walking. And then when
I tried to inhale a waddle doo. He inhaled the whole game. And it was just a black screen. And words with bloodshot text
"Give me your soul"
And then Kirbious's hand came through the screen and ripped into my chest and dug in to grab my Soul.
As I thrashed and screamed. He then ripped it out and the my chest hole sprayed blood everywhere and all over the screen.

Vinyl Moon Volume 97: The Pond Beyond
With Strength, Brandon.
This volume required more strength to digest than I imagined it would, but by the end the pros outweighed the cons.

Let's get into first impressions.
Did I over-hpye this volume before it hit my turntable? Perhaps. I blame a simple premise: KOI BIAS.
The album art truly hooked me in on this one.

I grew up watching my parents' 20 gallon fish tank. I raised Betta in college. I was mildly dismayed wen my husband announced my dreams of aqua-scaping the apartment were officially cancelled when we adopted our cat-not-catfish.
Stereotypically, I worked at an aquarium. One that was home to 90 koi in an interactive exhibit. My employment ended; my visits to pet and feed my babies have not.
Koi pond album was definitely a catch of the month from the sheer looks of it.
VM 97 Listening Log
A1: TRIPPY CELLO INTRO. THIS WILL BE SUCH A DOPE VOLUME. Love the Vocal Timbres. LOVE IT ALL 10/10.
A2: ...was hoping the strings would remain constant. Credit goes to the funky bass line. The synth stabs are a bit too harsh. Downtempo ending was a nice contrast to the mainly repetitive song.
A3: Instantly love the accent of the vocalist and the shimmer guitar and synth. Minimalist chorus, but super effective. I honestly just see Ncuti as the 15th Doctor dancing in his TARDIS with this pumping out the jukebox. More my speed than A2.
A4: Hand percussion is always appreciated in my book. especially when it is slightly more prominent than a set. Downtempo groove and a filtered voice really brings out the isolation vibes the lyrics are giving off. Wall of soft sounds round out the ending. This might be my favorite section of the song. This one kind of just hangs in the air. Fits the lyrics. Not badly written at all, but didn't jump out at me. Still, better than A2.
A5: Traditional shoegaze bass melts into horns? They are not too bright. Feeling this jazz band feel. From jazz band to near silence and oceanic pads. Soft filters, gentle flute, super quiet orchestral brass chords. How did we get here? Compositional genius. Final, darker recurrence of the jazz band ends with a radio fade. 10/10 RECOMMEND. NUANCED SOUNDSCAPE. <CHEF'S KISS>
B1: How can this go from so right to so cloying in 21 seconds? Duet voices and ALL instrumentation hammering the same exact beat pattern in unison. MAKE IT STOP. The best retreat we get is the voices alternating and very basic accompaniment instruments. Voices have not changed their rhythms at all. The only "bridge" they muster is a guitar solo that follows the rhythm of the previous vocal line ...much like the entire song. A side ended in a 10. B side starts with a 1. where s this going to go?
B2: Opening is promising...until vocals start up. It's giving older Taylor Swift. Also giving dixie chicks? Or it sounds like the artist who sang "I'm Gonna Soak Up the Sun". This is not my personal style. Nothing wrong with it songwriting wise. Some people will LOVE this. For me, another dud. I fear for B3.
B3: SWEET RELIEF. This is a bop. Simplicity and plate reverb of surf rock meets a male vocalist who sounds similar to Fleet Foxes. There are a few guitar stabs throughout the chorus, but they add to the song instead of act as a distraction from the vocalist. Well balanced. Loved this little riser section in the kit. Loved all of it, actually. BRING ON B4.
B4: Okay. Stark contrast here. The very few seconds of dissonant notes were creepy in a fun way. This song is straight forward. Too much so for my taste. The main 4/4 beat is just slammed into your brain. Not much of a rhythm section or groove to this. Lyrics are fun though. Well-written electro pop. Great for a general pop audience. Do I think it belongs on this volume exactly where it sits in this track listing? Not really? Will I jam to this after leaving a toxic work environment? Probably bumping this on the way home from my last day. It's love-hate for me. Slightly less hopeful for B5, but there truly is sonic art in this volume, so who knows.
B5: Cutesy. I will take cute. This reminds me of the 2010s. It's catchy. It's easy on the ears. Love the folk instruments. It balances lyrical content with proper instrumental breaks...and just like that, it's done! A short little palette cleanser. For me, a palette cleanser was necessary. Ready? or not? for B6.
B6: SWEET JEEBUS ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST. Textured bliss. Uptempo, retro synths. Good balance between walls of sound in the chorus/bridge and minimalist instrumentation in the verses. The bridge gets an edgy intro, then BOOM wall of sound. This gives Walk the Moon's "Next in Line" vibes. Ends on a choppy arpeggio. This last track hit me hard. Glad I didn't give up when the water got rough.
PROS
The songs that I loved from this volume, I ADORED. They are going into shuffle rotation STAT. Absolute Bangers. I think I have found more bands to follow and fall ever deeper in love with.
CONS
There were definitely a few BIG NOPE songs on this album for me, and some songs fell flat. On top of a difference in taste, the volume lacked something I crave in finished works: COHESIVTY/COHESION. This volume felt like a jukebox or a radio station. I didn't find the inner story. I didn't feel like the songs were related whatsoever, and sometimes they didn't sound great one after the other.
OVERALL
This volume was important, but it was mid. Don't skip it outright. My ear's trash could be your ear's oasis. For me, Ill take the good, leave the bad, and most likely will not listen to volume 97 as a unit again.

My thoughts on Baldur's Gate 3
This might just be the best RPG game ever created, and whatever you say game devs this should be a new benchmark for RPG game development! Let me touch down on some great, less great and just general experiences and thoughts around playing through this game ^_^
What they did amazing
This game feels like it took the best parts of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Dragon Age Origins, 2 and Inquisition, Divinity Original Sin and Witcher 3 and just made the optimal game ever.
The character creator - amazing. All the choices you need without being overly complicated. Lots of beautiful moving hair. Does not make you create your character in the green light of the Fade (looking at you DAI). 10/10.
The intro is epic and highly immersive, beautiful, scary, intense and a great introduction to the story.
The graphics and environments are STUNNING and immersive. The devs said they wanted to create an experience that is like the one you have with a group of friends going on a pen and paper adventure when it comes to environment epicness and magical story element, and they have.
The companions are insanely well written and voiced, and most importantly their personal quests are intrisincally linked to the main story in a way that almost no other of those games I listed above managed. And the multitude of characters you can enlist and get to know is perfectly diverse, and it gives you great choice when it comes to how you want your playthrough and party to be.
Going back to Dragon Age Origins and voicing everyone else but not the main character to instead focus on a multitude of choices, hooray and yes! It's wonderful!
Characters aren't gender bound in their sexuality, as a bi pan gamer I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you enabled us to create and write our own romance stories instead of making out genders the most important part of the storytelling of the game.
The music is epic and amazing, tear inducing <3 Just wow, queue on Spotify in repeat mood.
The books are great; they are never too long like they can be in Elder Scrolls games but just the perfect addon to the rest of the content to deepen the lore.
Outfits and dyes; the diversity is through the roof in all the good ways and it's not all armor bikini. Like, you can have raunchy underwear and bikini dress if you want to (late game, for gold) but there is all kinds of armor and outfits for all kinds of characters and needs and it's just so in line with the lore of the world. Thank you!
What I would have liked improved
A way for us to actually hear the companions banter even though we are not exactly over them with the camera. I have missed at least 80% of the banter because you have to zoom out to create a path to walk for them. The party banter needs it's own volume setting and it needs to be heard no matter where your camera is.
Inventory management; more bags with autosort, and much better "Sort by type" sorting (the dyes where all over the place o.O) and and less times the sorting bugs out. Also the possibility to sort according to the unsual themes in the vendor screen. Perhaps even a subcategory of buttons for "armor, weapons, potions, books" and so on.
Better warnings when you are about to cast another concentration skill while already concentrating on something.
There was one NPC I honestly disliked very much that I felt broke the immersion and it is the bloated bartender son in Act 2. It was full on modern Resident Evil vibes and not at all a very Dungeons & Dragons type of character. Nope nope. That whole area was just weird, far too modern in comparison to the rest of the game.
A photo mode, naturally.
Bugs that screwed with my game
A bug that makes the character portraits go black or weird if you do not have your graphical settings on ultra for everything, please fix that one Larian!
Shadowhearts friend disappeared, rip.
A romance scene was deleted due to too many long rest cutscenes getting stacked on each other, and it put me into a fight with steel watchers instead.
The city houses in Act three constantly loaded their objects way before their walls which messed with countless cutscenes where the only background was the sky and a floating bed. I really hope they can fix this so the walls are loaded first.
My journey through the game
Act 1 is amazingly well polished and filled with exploration, wonder and well balanced magical content.
The game's incredible way of letting you choose whatever way you want to do things is both a blessing and a curse. It makes for wonderful content; you can sneak, persuade, kill everyone, you can be good, evil, chaotic, neutral, wise, stupid, decieving or intimidating, you can miss whole quest lines, areas and characters, or you can stumble into the most obscure little nooks with lore tidbits. It's daunting, and really cool that they give you so little guidance and so many options. The openness and vague nature of the Journal - akin to the original games - are sometimes a fun challenge and sometimes for me too scary to handle.
Just because you can never be sure if your choices lead to what you want or the death of everyone making choices can be a bit too scary for me sometimes and I find myself relying on guides to be able to choose. Not optimal, but that's mostly down to personal preference. In those moments I long for the railroaded stories of Mass Effect, but those moments with more railroaded questlines are also there in BG3 and they are amazing.
Act 2 was honestly really scary, the atmosphere was completely different and they did an amazing job creating a frightening cursed land. The only "weird" thing here for me is how very "steampunk" the game turns, which continues into Act 3 as well, which is a testament to the whole American and D&D view on fantasy settings. It is what it is, I'm just not a fan of that kind of setting mixing.
I also developed a fear of long resting here somewhere because I had quests that failed when going to the camp or resting and there is like no telling what those are so I just started doing as much as I could between rests which made the cutscenes during the rests go haywire and fight with each other.
Act 3 had an amazing beginning, and fun well crafted areas. The performance was terrible and kinda buggy due to the many NPC:s and assets in the area. The villains and their quests and areas were great!
I think I did some personal quests a bit early while I should have waited until I was a higher level, they were pretty punishing. When I reached level 12 with a gazillion summons nothing was really difficult anymore.
In the end I had basically every ally possible (except for Astarion's vampire buddys T_T) but I only used the strange ox and dame Aylin, who survived, and iron hand gnomes and city guards (who were killed by mind flayer arcanists) since I don't want people to die.
THE ENDING...
What the heck Larian, that's not ok. No reasonable closure on my romance, no tale of what happens to everyone, I just got a cutscene with Karlach and some lines from Gale. I really hope they are working on expanding on this as we speak and there are some indications that they are.
It wasn't full on "Mass Effect 3 at launch" but not too far from it. I am disappoint... And on that note:
My romance experience
It started amazing with both Astarion and Shadowheart, beautiful stories both. Up until the ending of Act 1 it was amazing and peachy pie. During Act 2 not much happens at all, except for Astarion breaking up with me over a drow and her blood. The horror... I had to break up with Shadowheart to be with Astarion, and at least we could kiss.
But that was about it, the only thing after that until the end of the game was the main personal quest of that character - where I missed a whole part because I couldn't find his siblings - and I did that waaay too soon, and I chose the soft ending which just made him sad and brooding and then there was nothing except for him slut shaming me when I slept with the incubus and scenes bugging out, as well as no real ending.
It started so well, and it ended with emptiness and sadness. Apparently he also has new voice lines during the final fight that I missed T_T
Rip.
In conclusion
Amazing game, 9/10 until they patch the ending and pace the cut scenes during long rests better and make the lower city less laggy. I am perfectly confident in that within a year all this will have happened and there will be no games able to rival this one in the scope of epicness and emotion <3

296/ Rena Jones & KiloWatts - Force Multiplier (2023) this is a very specific flavor of soft-beat-driven chillout that i breathed in 2006. check out the piz (plucks?) in "Affinity", comfortably nesting on top of a soft soundscape. the beat that comes in is gentle, but important.

297/ Andy Stott - Too Many Voices (2016) the sound design here is crisp. ace. i adore it all. "New Romantic" and "Selfish" pack some choice dist. then there's some amazing texture soundscapes in "Waiting For You" and…actually just all of the songs. & what an enrapturing intro!

do you ever feel like you might be dead by the time you get your degree?? Cos I do. Istg this degree( that I chose) is sucking the life and youth out of me
i[m very sorry that you're experiencing this <333 school can be soooo difficult, not just academically but bc of all of the *vaguely gesturing* external facotrs we're expected to balance as well - even if u chose your area of study voluntarily, the workload + environment + living in a Society + financials etc., put so much strain on students, it's reasonable that you might not have the same feelings towards yr degree as perhaps u once did
definitely this semester, there was this one intro theory course that gave me WAY more stress than it should have, & it made me so anxious n self critical n hopelesssss about my degree for a bit. (my ta was very umm strict to say the least).
what helped me, personally, with this was 1. spending Less time studying for this class, bc the more time i spent studying the more neurotic i got about the material. with distance, i found that the material wasn't so bad! 2. identifying what Actually stressed me out about the course (in the time i didn't study, i journaled a lot about it). it turned out that the theory itself wasn't the problem, but rather, the fact that i really really cared about my ta's opinion of me (-> my grades) bc at the beginning of the semester he told us that only 10% of the students in this class were worth his time (& i really wanted to be that 10%!). altho it's more cathartic for me to go 'wow i hate theory i hope everyone who has ever had a single thought about the state Explodes,' it's more helpful for me to go 'oh actually maybe i shouldn't literally sleep in the library for four days in a row over a six page paper that'll be graded by someone who will never give any paper an a' bc that helps me like, Think about what to actuallly Do next...3. reminding myself that college courses are very much a bubble, and what we learn in these courses only matters in how we apply this knowledge in the real world - like, reminding myself of how this abstract, abstruse material could actually apply to my future ideal life! even if i don't thoroughly understand lacan...
however, overall i have been fortunate to really love and appreciate my degree despite its many flaws. altho idk your circumstances, i would hope that there is some way you don'thave to resign yourself to a future/present that depresses you so much - it's possible!! i can't ofc just say 'drop everything and vibe' bc idt that's the most realistic/livable advice. but. there are still always options to take step-by-step. is there an academic/career counselor u can talk to at school about changing majors (perhaps to something w enough overlapping classes, but different perspectives/applications irl) or minoring in something totally different (for more diversity of thought)? do you know any older students/graduated people that u can talk to, who majored in what ur majoring in, but whose jobs are unrelated to their degrees? is it the volume of workload that's a problem - & if so, are there classes you can pass/fail or research opportunities you can defer to next semester? is it the content's complexity that's the problem - & if so, do u have any friends in the class / any study groups / tutoring services / tas in other sections u can reach out to? ik many people who hate their degrees, but love the jobs/opportunities that their degrees allow them (ex. ik three philosophy majors who haaate philosophy. but they're going into finance, law school, and compsci respectively, despite not taking any econ/law/cs classes) - are there any like, clubs or volunteer opportunities u can try out that might give u greater insight as to what ur future miiight look like?
this is getting sooo long (sorry again), but You + your wellbeing are far more important than like, some gpa or degree. esp when school gets overwhelming, it's easy to ignore or punish yrself by forgoing food/sleep/social activities/etc. altho this sounds sooo #livelaughlove, i highly recommend maybe taking a ten minute walk outside every day without your phone, just to like, build in a little time where you aren't thinking about School and Degrees and The Inevitable and Looming Future Ahead. (<- it sounds silly maybe but prescribing myself Daily Sunlight rly worked for me!) if taking a leave of absence, or not graduating by a previously-agreed-upon deadline is better for your Life, i would suggest considerng this too. thinking about death so much is so distressing & so hard to deal with on a daily basis. i really empathize with you, that a life spent constantly resigned to a state of present hopelessness/anxiety is so taxing!!
if i'm overreacting by writing so much for your message, it really is bc i have, at times in my life, been exactlyyyy where u are and it sucks and yet with time and with considering your options, it does get better. even if this means still majoring in what u don't like, but maybe being ok with a few (subjectively) not-exemplary grades, or making more friends outside your major, or scheduling one day a week where u just #vibe no studying allowed, or reminding yourself that in a few years you'll be in a place where you'll never have to think about [highly specific concept that sucks] ever again. you do have a future, but u also do live in the present - please take care of yourself, or reach out to people who can help u care for yourself!! sorry this is so long!! love u!!!

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) It’s been a while since I’ve watched a movie and really felt like I was seeing something new, you know? I was visually exhausted and I can’t recommend it enough. I just want more movies that are both silly and sincere and fun. What an adventure.

Pirate Radio / The Boat that Rocked (2009) This cast is so great. I don’t think I realized it upon my first viewing back when it was released. The cutaways to the listeners are lovely and so varied that it really sells the impact these radio stations had. Big fan.
Empress of Darkness (2020) I don’t remember how I came across Nick DiLiberto (the director and sole animator of this movie) but I bought DVDs of both of his movies and this one is just fantastic. 60 minutes depicting a beautiful, violent, nearly wordless struggle. Check out the trailers online and if you like what you see then the movie delivers that and more.

Squid Game (Episode 1.01 to 1.09) Finally got around to checking this out and I’ve never been more consistently stressed watching a season of television, Really really great until the international characters show up and then it’s really really good. Although I will say that final hair choice really deflated the serious tone of those last few scenes. The visuals are clearly iconic and I still don’t understand how anyone walked away from this with any message other than “capitalism is bad.”
Ghosts (Episode 1.01 to 1.06) Charming and maybe a little...wholesome? I don’t quite know how to explain it. I mean you can tell how an episode will play out after the first couple minutes but I just enjoy spending time with these silly characters.

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (Page 192 of 507) I have a hard time explaining just how great these books are (this is the second in the series after the equally fantastic Gideon the Ninth). The writing just feels so effortless and the characters clearly defined from their first introduction. The series has such an interesting structure and this second book’s second-person point-of-view really adds to the character’s paranoia. Oh also this book is about space necromancers training to fight a world beast while also seemingly trying to kill each other? I dunno it’s weird and wonderful and absolutely worth checking out.
Work Won't Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted, and Alone by Sarah Jaffe (Complete) Outside of the intro and conclusion, each chapter (which breaks down why a different umbrella of industry exploits its labour) can be read or skipped without missing much. I mention this because reading the book cover to cover was exhausting. In a good way. But perhaps now how I’d reread it. Anyway all this is to say I recommend the book.

Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 10 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Every volume manages to stick with the premise (eating monsters to survive a dungeon) even when the stakes ramp up towards the looming climax. Funny and deeply character-driven and such beautiful artwork. Really really great and I won’t stop recommending this. Go pick up volume 1.

Young Offenders (1–3) by Mike Becker, Mark Stack, and Jodie Troutman (Complete) I kickstarted this miniseries a while back and it was a really fun read! In three issues you get a good intro to these characters, a sense of the world they’re living in, and solid threat to require a full team of fresh-faced superheros. Totally recommend picking it up and I know you can get it from Becker’s site here.

Bronco by Orville Peck (2022) If always bugs me when folks say they don’t like a certain genre of music. I just assume they haven’t found the right artist that clicks with them, you know? Orville Peck is a great example of that for me and country music. I don’t click with a lot of artists in the genre but not Peck. His voice, emotion, and theatrics all resonate. This album feels bigger and bolder than his previous and it’s been on heavy rotation this month.

Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) My weekly group decided to rob the Ozian mob and it went...fairly well! Will there be any consequences? Who could say. Full campaign diary is here on reddit! Meanwhile the Mof1 crew fell into a trap, were knocked unconscious, and have just avoided being buried alive. Now they have to flee the rest of the thugs who were tasked with filling in the holes.

Fugazi, Riverside, Newcastle, England 5/15/1992 (FLS #0442)
On May 15, 1992, Fugazi returned to the Riverside, “one of Newcastle’s most iconic live music venues” (and allegedly a band favorite as well) some two weeks into a grueling European tour that would last for about two and a half months.
The recording of this show surely is a fun and enjoyable entry, and a cool addition to the Fugazi Live Series. It portrays a band in a good and humorous mood, as well as a lively and avid audience. 
The band surprisingly opens with the live debut of Sweet and Low (based on the available recordings so far), true to the 1993 studio version, to ease into the set, and ups the ante right after with a string of heavy hitters, including an early live rendering of banger Instrument.
Although the vocals are rather low in the mix for the first couple of songs, and the overall sound a bit muddy, the audio quality fortunately ramps up significantly towards the end of Sieve-Fisted Find, following a notable and sudden volume drop. From here on out, the recording is quite a delight to listen to. Notice Brendan’s wonderful use of the hi-hat and cymbals while performing Exit Only and Reclamation, pure bliss!
Other highlights include Shut the Door, or Great Cop which is appropriately dedicated to some punter urging the band to “fucking get on with it.”
Michael Sanderson, having attended the gig, jotted down some of the banter and events that marked the occasion:
Fugazi are in a good mood and talk to the audience throughout. For the encore Brendan walks on and talks into the microphone, it seems whenever he can get the chance, he’s up at the front with a mic stuck in his face!! (a closet singer perhaps?) Ian, Joe and Guy then come on ‘This song is a new one, so if you can guess what it’s called we’ll play it!’ people shout and scream titles... ‘It’s a new one you’ve never heard it!!’ scream scream ‘No that’s not it!’ scream scream ‘That’s close!’
Frantically, someone down the front is yelling ‘fucking get on with it’ as if his life depended on it!
‘The most impatient man I know’ says Guy
‘Fucking get on with it!’
‘Are you comfortable?’ questions Ian
‘Fucking get on with it!’
‘This man must be heard to be believed’ says Guy as he passes the mic over to him and gets more of the same only now amplified.
‘See? Do you have a bus to catch?’ with that they set off into ‘Great Cop’ Stacks and finish off with Margin Walker.
Newcastle conquered once again.
More small talk relates to the introduction of the “living room concept” by Guy, or to Ian and Guy commending local band Crane, dedicating Waiting Room to this “most underrated band in England” as well.
This tape presents 19 live tracks in total. This includes no less than four early live performances and the aforementioned live debut off of the In on the Kill Taker album which would not see its release for almost another year. Steady Diet of Nothing (4), Repeater (5), Margin Walker EP (2) and the debut S/T or 7 Songs EP (3) provided the rest of the live cuts for the evening.

Freddie's black leather pants had both blue and red kneepads just to keep the football fans of both Liverpool and Everton happy, as Brian explained at some point during the show. For their own amusement during the acoustic set, Brian and Freddie played a bit of Mull Of Kintyre after Freddie mentioned how Wings had just played in Liverpool. Freddie jokingly said, "I'll be Linda McCartney." The band perform Liar on the second night in Liverpool, as they always did when playing two consecutive nights at a venue on this tour. The first picture was taken by Jim Jenkins, and the second by Ian Stewart Brown during We Are The Champions. The last photo set was taken by Doug Price and cleaned up by Ryan Newton.

“I was fortunate to see Queen make their debut on T.O.T.P. in early 74. This was the time that Glam rock was at its peak, as a 10 year old I used to enjoy watching the likes of Mud, Slade, Sweet and Gary Glitter. I had never heard of Queen before seeing them on T.O.T.P, from that appearance I was hooked! The sound and visual image of the band took my appreciation of music to a level which was far ahead of the other acts that i used to enjoy. The song that they performed, Seven Seas Of Rhye, has stood the test of time so well over the last 29 years. For the next 5 years I would always listen out for a new Queen single release hoping that i could see the band perform the single on the TV. A couple of months after my 15th birthday I had the opportunity to see the band play live in Liverpool on the Crazy tour. It was to be an early Christmas present off my parents and they were taking me to the concert 80 miles away from my home town with another Queen fan called Elizabeth (good name for a Queen fan!). To say I couldnt wait was an understatment! Just over a week before the gig I went down with chicken pox, my Mother said "You can't go to the concert as you might give it to Freddie!", but, it was going to take more than chicken pox to stop me seeing the band for the first time! The concert took place on a Friday, I remember being in school and a couple of mates being almost as excited for me as i was for myself, as i was always telling them how much i loved Queen! We had excellent seats, in the 4th row, on Brian's side. There was no support band, so, when the lights of the theatre where dimmed you can imagine the atmosphere in there, a cloud of dry ice slowly wafted into the audience with the intro tape playing, I'm shaking my head typing this as I can remember it so well, just goes to show that you never forget your first one! This is what I had been waiting for, for so long, the opportunity of seeing Queen live, I had heard so many times of what a great live show they would perform, before this I had only seen their Christmas eve gig on the TV in 75. I hadn't even heard a bootleg tape before I purchased Live Killers, an album that I couldn't wait to buy, and played to death in my bedroom in the summer of 79! The lighting rig was suspended about 6 ft high above the stage, this was slowly raised to reveal the hundreds of white, green and red lights piercing through the dry-ice and into the noisy, excited crowd, an explosion was the cue for the band to enter the stage, they ripped into Jailhouse rock, with the customary, as I was to learn, always, last on stage appearance of Freddie. There he was about 10 ft away from me, unbeliavable, first impressions? He was smaller than what I thought, on the TV he seemed to give off the appearance he was a lot bigger, or was that just the way his stage presence came over on TV? He was dressed in all black leather, including the hat, and the "fly" eye shades. Not to displease any of the city's football fans in the audience Brian later revealed that was the reason, why Freddie was wearing blue and red kneepads! The set list was similar to Live Killers, but included Save Me which wasn't to be released as a single until the next month. The majority of people reading this will have seen Queen in concert, so you know how brilliant a Queen gig was. With the glorious benefit of hindsight I was fortunate that I had such a great seat to see the band in action for my first time. A year later and my first gig could have been at the back of the N.E.C. in Birmingham. All too soon the gig finished, on leaving the theatre O noticed that my ears where ringing from the volume of the concert, the ringing didnt stop until the next Tuesday! December 91, two weeks after Freddie has passed away and I'm back at The Empire for the first time since my first Queen gig, of all the places to go back to... I explained to my partner that it was a gig I wanted to miss as it would be too painful to visit the Theatre in the circumstances, she talked me around, so I took my seat in the circle to see the gig by Paul Young, who I had seen before, and to this day I still like. Whilst the support act was on, I looked down into the stalls, from the right of the theatre I looked at the 4th row and counted the seats until I got to the 12th seat, the seat I had for my first Queen gig, the memories came flooding back of that night, my throat was choked as I took a journey on the gigs that I had seen after I had been in that seat - 3 trips to Paris, 2 to Brussels, Cologne, Hot Space tour, attending the 7 gigs in the U.K. on The Works tour, down the front at the Live Aid gig, The Magic tour, every opportunity I had to see the band in action I took, they would never happen again, being a Queen fan you can probably realise how I was hurting at that time? A couple of years later Brian performed in Liverpool at The Royal Court Theatre, just down the road from The Empire, I was made up that he was playing in Liverpool as this was a chance to see Brian's first visit to Liverpool since my first concert in 79. It was a great concert with a brilliant atmosphere. On Brian's next tour 5 years later I was fortunate to meet him, and he signed a photo of a picture I had taken from his gig in Liverpool in '93. On telling him of the gig it was taken at, he commented on what a great night that had been, and how he was disappointed he couldn't book the venue on the tour he was on. The Brian gig in Liverpool was just what I needed after my return to The Empire, perhaps I am asking for too much, but, it would be great to see Brian perform sometime at The Empire! If your ticket for the gig is Row D, Seat 12, after reading this you can understand why I would want to swap tickets with you?!” - Kevin Hughes
“We set off for Manchester early Saturday morning one day in September 1979. I had to bribe my brother in-law(not a Queen fan) with the promise of a ticket and petrol money as I couldn't drive at the time. We arrived at Manchester Apollo before opening hours but found to my horror that they'd already been open an hour. We got to within sight of the ticket office and the inevitable happened - the sold out sign came out. Two long months later, concert day at last. I had a stomach like a child on Christmas Eve. I had a few cans on the way (Tartan bitter, remember them?) When we parked up I was physically sick due to the excitement of course(nothing to do with beer, honest). After a bit of banter in the queue we finally got to our seats. We weren't near the front but with it being a theatre we were never going to be that far from the stage. The lights dimmed, there was dry ice everywhere, the pizza oven began to rise, then Queen exploded on to the stage singing We Will Rock You. The crowd rose as one everybody jumping up and down like demented animals. We had a burst of Millionaire Waltz, Brian playing piano on Save Me. The crowd kept on singing Crazy Little Thing Called Love long after the music had finished and Freddie doing the dance he did in the video. I remember singing Love Of My Life the whole way through with the crowd as Freddie listened, then singing it all again with him. Roger's big drums, Brian's guitar solo, then Freddie and the boys whipping the crowd into another frenzy with Bohemian Rhapsody, Sheer Heart Attack and Tie Your Mother Down. Then Freddie on the shoulders of Superman singing We Will Rock You and then the song to end all concerts - We Are The Champions. As that was my first Queen concert, it was a very special one for me. I was lucky enough to see them six times and I can say "hand on heart" every show was a different experience. I think some of you will know what I mean. I'm no writer(as you can probably tell) so I hope this all makes sense to you and I hope you got a little bit of the excitement and emotion I had in 1979.” - Ducksoup

"Youngjo, I got your food!"
You push your way into the recording studio, where Youngjo had told you he would be waiting for you, and for dinner. You haven't seen your best friend in almost a whole week, because he's been so busy preparing for ONEUS's upcoming comeback, but you finally managed to organize a time to hang out.
Tonight, he had said over the phone, at the recording studio. For dinner and maybe hanging out and relaxing after a hard day of work.
But now that you're here, you find his usual spot in his chair is empty.
"Huh?" You glance around the table. "He isn't at the dorm, is he? He said we'd meet here, right? Did he go to the dorm?" you ask yourself out loud.
His bag is on the floor, so he can't have gone home. Unless he forgot all of his stuff here, which isn't likely. He's usually more responsible than that, and it would be difficult to forget everything at the studio without noticing. You take out your phone to text him, opening texts and clicking on his icon. 
Suddenly, someone grabs your shoulder with a "boo!" and you yell in surprise, turning around with your hands up in a fighting stance, only to be faced with Youngjo himself, smiling like an idiot, looking so proud of himself for scaring you.
"Oh my gosh, Youngjo, you scared me," you say, lowering your hands. He laughs.
"Good to see you too." He hugs you tightly, and as he lets go and pulls away, his hands linger on your shoulders. This isn't a rare occurrence. They linger the same way his eyes often linger on yours a bit too long after you finish a conversation.
You've felt the tension between the two of you before. You and Youngjo practically grew up together. You know him like the back of your hand, and you're sure that Youngjo knows you that well, too. You know that you both feel something more than platonic feelings toward each other.
And yet, despite the feelings that you are almost useless that you both have, you two are just friends. You don't know why. Perhaps it's laziness. You're both so comfortable in friendship, and you love having Youngjo as a friend and you're somewhat worried that something romantic would ruin that. Or perhaps it has to do with busy-ness. Youngjo is a music producer, an idol. He's always busy, working tirelessly. You don't want tk be a distraction in his already busy life.
"I brought food," you say, lifting up the bag of takeout between you.
He smiles, says "Thank you, Y/Nie," and takes the bag, gesturing for the chair next to the desk before he sits down in his own chair. He sets the bag down and smiles at you.
"Are you the only one here?"
Youngjo shakes his head. "I think Seoho might still be here."
"How're comeback preparations going?" you ask.
"Things have been going well. Most of everything is done, we just have finishing touches left and, of course, filming," he says. "But things are well. We're prepared."
"And how are you?" you ask. Youngjo sighs, leaning back in his chair.
"Nervous."
"I know you are," you say. He usually is anxious for comebacks. He, and the rest of his members, work so hard every time, and he typically spends a lot of time perfecting everything, worrying if it's good enough for ToMoon. "I'm sure the album is great, Youngjo. Your music always is."
He smiles. "Thank you, Y/Nie. What'd you get?" he asks, reaching for the bag of takeout.
"Some spicy ramyeon. The kind I know you like."
He smiles sweetly, and you feel very proud of yourself for making him smile like that. You love his smile. You grew up with that smile. As kids, you would make each laugh every day with stupid jokes and fun kid games.
"Do you want some?" he asks, lifting the bowl toward you. You shake your head.
"I'm okay, I already ate," you say, but the smell of the food makes your mouth water anyway.
He pouts. "But you walked all the way here. I know you're a little hungry."
You stare down at the box of spicy ramyeon. It looks so good. And what you ate earlier today wasn't actually very filling, now that you think about it . . .
"Maybe I'll have a bit."
He smiles. "I knew you'd want some." He gathers the noodles on his chopsticks and raises it up for you. "Open up!"
You laugh a bit. You've been feeding each other since you were kids, so this isn't out of the ordinary. But now that you're both adults, it kind of feels silly and childish. Not in a bad way, but in a fun way. It brings you back to the times when you and Youngjo would sit in the grass and feed each other ice cream on hot summer days.
Youngjo feeds you a bit of the ramyeon. He offers you more but you politely decline. As he continues to eat, you two talk about anything and everything. How your work is going, what's happening with the other ONEUS members, what's going on with each of your respective families (you both say nothing much). As you two talk and talk, you find your eyes drifting back to the half empty bowl of ramyeon.
You're still hungry.
"Do you want to have some more?" Youngjo asks, noticing you staring at it so longingly.
"Yes please." You nod.
He chuckles and grabs the chopsticks and feeds you again, the same way. The noodles dangling from the chopsticks barely make it to your mouth, and you barely catch them. While the two of you are giggling, the noodles halfway in your mouth, the door creaks open. You nearly fall backward in your chair as you and Youngjo look at the intruder.
Lee Seoho stands in the doorway, one hand on the doorknob as he looks at you, a couple noodles hanging from your mouth. Embarrassed, you quickly cover your mouth with your hand and slurp up the noodles.
"Y/Nie," Seoho says, his voice cheerful and sweet. If you weren't peeking at him over your eyes, you'd still be able to hear the smile on his face. He's clearly amused by the sigh of you with noodles hanging from your lips.
"Hi Seoho," you say. Youngjo hands you a napkin, which you use to dab away at the drips on your chin. Seoho watches with a wide smile on his face, amused by your appearance.
"You two are cute," Seoho says. His smile softens a bit. "Youngjo, just so you know, I'll be heading to the dorm in about an hour, if you need anything."
"Okay, thanks."
"You two are cute," Seobo repeats. You roll your eyes, but Youngjo scolds him, twisting around in his chair to completely face Seoho.
"Hey! Don't you have a dance to practice?"
"Sorry," Seoho squeaks, giggling as he backs out the door and shuts it behind him.
"Anyway, would you like a sneak peak of a song?" Youngjo asks. He puts the empty take-out box and trash in the take-out bag to throw away later.
"Sure!"
He smiles widely and grabs the headphones from the table. He holds them up to you, and pauses.
"I can only show you a few seconds because too many spoilers isn't a good idea, if that's okay,"  he says. You nod. "Good."
You listen to the start of the title track, 'To Be Or Not To Be'. The beat is nice, and the music is a real vibe. But after ten seconds of the intro he moves to the chorus of the song. Ten seconds. Pause. He removes the headphones.
"What do you think?" he asks expectantly.
"I love it!" you say. "I mean, you only showed me about twenty seconds of the song, but from what I heard, it was awesome! I loved the beat, and the vocals were great! I heard some of your voice in there, Ravn. It sounds amazing."
He smiles proudly, and you swear his eyes are shining. "Thank you, Y/Nie!"
You can't help but smile. He's always loved the compliments. He doesn't usually tell you that he likes the praise, but you can tell from his smiles of pride he displays whenever you tell him he did a good job always makes you feel giddy inside. It's been this way since you two were kids.
"I'll show you one more," he says, obviously overcome by his joy.
He hands you the headphones again and plays the song. This beat is significantly different from the title track, and when he skips to the chorus, the beat is different. Surprising, but still really enjoyable and satisfying.
"Youngjo!" you yell a little louder than intended due to the music playing so loudly into your ears. He looks at you, that cute smile still spread over his face. "This one's really lovely, too!"
"Thank you! I knew you'd like it!" he yells back, amused with your volume. He lifts his hands and takes the headphones off of your head.
"Oh, was I loud?" you ask, voice lowered now that the headphones have been removed.
Youngjo laughs. "Yes, a little bit."
"Ah, sorry."
"No, no. It's ok."
Oh gosh, his wide smile is seriously to die for. Whenever he smiles at you like that, with his starry eyes, your heart beats ten times faster and you can't help but smile back. The same way he can't help but beam like the sun when you praise him.
"Oh, what time is it . . . ?" you ask, checking your phone.
"Oh right. You said you have to leave at 10:30, right? You have a meeting before work, right?"
"Mhm." You open your phone, squinting at the clock. "Ah! It's 10:43! I should get going," you say, standing up and gathering what little you brought for yourself. You grab the trash-filled take-out bag as well. "I'll throw this away on the way out."
"Okay. Need any help?"
You shake your head as you approach the door.
"Alright then. See you later, Y/Nie!"
"Bye, Youngjo!"
You close the door behind you as you exit the studio. As you make your way down the hall, you pause. Seoho should still be here for another ten minutes. Maybe you should say bye to him, too?
You head to the practice room you would usually find him in. Inside, you see him through the glass door, taking a drink of water, and you knock on the door. Seoho looks over in surprise before smiling widely and waving you inside. You enter and walk over to him, glancing around the room.
"I was just getting ready to go," Seoho says. "How are you, Y/Nie?"
"I'm well," you say as Seoho gathers his things. "Kind of busy with work and all. I have a meeting early tomorrow morning, which is why I'm leaving now."
"Ah, I see. What's that?" Seoho asks, nodding to the plastic bag in your hand.
"Oh, it's trash. I brought Youngjo some take-out because he'll be working so late tonight, and I'm taking the trash on my way out," you explain.
"I'll come with you. I'm leaving too, anyway, so I can walk with you and we can catch up."
"Alright, I'd like that."
He finishes gathering his stuff--water bottle, spare shoes--and walks with you outside. The night air is cool, and you shiver a bit. But it's not cold. You smile, feeling the coolness on your cheeks.
"It's been a while since I've seen you, what with all of the chaos of pre-comeback preparations. It's nice to see you Y/Nie."
"Yeah, it's nice to see you too, Seoho." You smile. "Are you excited for the comeback?"
He nods cutely. "Mhm. Excited and nervous."
"I'm sure. I listened to a bit of 'To Be Or Not To Be' and another one."
"Oh, did you?" he asks, eyebrow raised. You two reach the dumpster in the alleyway behind the RBW building, and you toss the bag of trash away as you nod.
"Which side track did you listen to?" he asks.
"Youngjo didn't tell me the name, but it went like this." You hum the tune, and Seoho claps joyfully.
"Oh yes, that one. 'Dizzy'!" he says.
"Oh! You and CyA contributed to 'Dizzy', right?" you ask. "Lyrics and composing."
"Yep!" Seoho laughs. "How did you like them?"
"They sound great. I heard your voice in the chorus of 'To Be Or Not To Be', and you did amazingly!" you say. "Youngjo only showed me tiny parts, but I can't wait to hear the full versions and the rest of the album. As for 'Dizzy', I could definitely feel your vibe."
"I can't wait for you to hear them," Seoho says. He thinks for a bit. "Y/Nie, the six of us are going to be filming tomorrow and the day after. You should come on Thursday to cheer us on."
"That sounds like a fun idea," you say, smiling. "I'll get to hear more of the title track then. I'll see if I can make it, what with work and all."
"Alright. Let me know and I'll text you details."
"Okay. Bye Seoho-ya," you say. You start walking away before pausing and turning back to him and giving him a tight hug. You pull away and smile up at him. He smiles back.
"Bye Y/Nie!"
"Bye!"

Rishloo - Feathergun: Review
New year, new me. Let’s repeat that until it becomes true. 
There seems to be a pattern with how I discover music. At a very young age, I hear a song in a very specific circumstance. It has a big impact on me, but I make absolutely zero effort to check out any of the artist’s other music and instead meander onto another earworm. Then, years later, I have another chance meeting with the same song/album/artist and fall completely down a rabbithole that foundationally changes my taste in music. It happened with Radiohead (High and Dry as one of the default songs in the original Rocksmith), Queens of the Stone Age (Lost Art of Keeping a Secret in a stick figure animation), and Nine Inch Nails (Hurt (Quiet) on Spotify radio). Then, there was this strange song called “Scissorlips” that I saw on a very small Rock Band 3 drum channel. I showed it to my brother because of how fun the chart looked, and made the mistake of watching his reaction to the video. His disinterest embarrassed me enough that I never chased the music. That is, of course, until many years later, when I was introduced to Tool. The rest is history, and is frankly stalling me from starting the actual review. Let’s get to it.
Scissorlips - 8/10
The strange, dark jungle the album begins with is a nice representation of the album cover, although it won’t rule over the entire runtime. Don’t let the de-tuned guitar under the vocals deter you; the rest of the guitarwork here is beautiful. As we reach the pre-chorus, the percussionists may hear why I was interested in this song as a kid. This is also where the sonic background really opens up, swallowing you for a moment before the intro verse comes back. The lyricism here is also very abstract, yet isn’t impossible to follow. A couple of metallic bites taken out of the mostly psychedelic walls of guitars, then, the first of many beautiful delay effects. The build-up got me pretty good when I heard this so many years ago, and It’s still damn good. For the love. There are so many guitar lines here that just intertwine and enlace you. Then, something a bit heavier (yet oddly hopeful) to round the song out.
Turning Sheep into Goats - 7/10
This intro is more of what can be expected for the rest of the album, sonically speaking. A lone guitar with delay playing a complicated and alluring line in a strange time signature, then built upon. The path you may assume this song will follow is extremely suddenly changed at the chorus, the vocals really driving it home. Then, back into that nice opening riff like nothing happened. The next time that chorus comes thundering around, listen to that low guitar and the way it combines with the drums. Then drop out the ugliness into a floating mesh of palm mutes and synthetic strings. And don’t miss the fl
Systematomatic - 7/10
awless transition into the next song. Immediately, a new riff rises from the pond of reverb. You may not identify it immediately, but don’t worry, you’ll get more chances to. Very fast guitar-work that somehow doesn't sound so frantic, although the chorus definitely has a certain desperation to it. The mood gets heavy again, before quickly sliding into a strange, feverish haze. Some hits of percussion, then a recontexutalized and slower return to the riff at the start of the song. Weave us back into war.
River of Glass - 8/10
Now this is an ear-catching introduction. What seems to be a calm wave of delay is punctuated by war drums and a grimier lead. The mood builds, then crescendos into the song proper. The chorus is hear damn near immediately, and is extremely catchy for prog. This album is really just full of extremely memorable vocals, and the instrumentals complement them perfectly. We get two goes-around before we fall into these twisting and sliding strings. The drummer is also on his A-game here. Then, the guitars push into the clouds before coming back down with another short but heavy low. Then it all cuts out for a second, juts to make the burst into the final chorus that much more effective.
Keyhole in the Sky - 7/10
This one is simpler, but also very filling and peaceful. Unfortunately it does begin to showcase my only problem with this album; the vocals are mixed too loud at times. And while the singer is absolutely incredible, sometimes I’d like the instrumentals to breathe a bit more. The walls of high guitar come back around, this time feeling much more friendly and familiar. One last chorus, closing on a quiet note. Though it’s not over; an alien feedback loop and somber, echoey horn passage lead us into the next track
Downhill - 10/10
This song has two main phases, and is absolutely perfect throughout. An easy start; a relatively simple and serene riff fed through a pleasant delay pedal, with some subtle synth and bass backing. The vocals shine through, as clear as ever. And wave, goodbye. Then, like stepping through a portal into phase one. A very interesting, rhythmic and almost bluesy instrumental accompanies the title-drop. Then, we fall for miles down a well of piano. The bottom greets us with a moonlit key solo, then an incredible Floydian guitar solo. Hanging on the last note, phase two begins with an ominous drone and repeating guitar line. The drums rise, give a false start. then... perfection. I cannot do phase two justice with words. Just close your eyes, listen, and be swept away in what I believe to be one of the greatest vocal performances of all time.
Lost.
Feathergun in the Garden of the Sun - 9/10
Not to be outdone by the previous masterpiece, the title track opens with another wonderful soundscape, before the distortion comes in. The drums pick up the tension, bringing us into the pre-chorus. That riff is going to be impossible to tap your foot to at first, but the next ones should be easier. And here we have perhaps the best chorus on the record; extremely powerful in writing and execution on the parts of every band member. The second time around is just as good as the first, then the brdige begins. Ready, aim... The heaviest riff on the album, and an abrupt switch into the last chorus. Fade out.
Dreamcatcher - 7/10
A nice break from the intensity. This feels like a peaceful tidepool on an alien world, with creatures and colors beyond the world floating around my head. Short but sweet.
Diamond Eyes - 6/10
By no means bad, I do feel like this one may be the weakest track on the album. While it’s certainly beautiful, I feel like it doesn’t do a whole lot that’s new or interesting. Also, when listening at high volume (which is the proper way to listen to this album), the faults in the mixing really rear their ugly heads during the choruses. Still, there are some very pleasant rolling delay loops here during the bridge, and a nice and satisfying buildup towards the end.
Katsushika - 7/10
While the guitar opening this track may be the most straight-forward and least effects-driven riff we’ve heard so far, this song will eventually become the most alien one of the entire lineup. In a good way, of course. I can barely even decipher exactly what’s going on in the instrumentation during that build. The chorus also ends with a nice drop-off into the next verse. You may be noticing a pattern with the songwriting, where the chorus usually leads into the second verse, following the pattern of the first one but with more layering. I like it; it gives the ideas present more time to mature and develop. Anyways, here comes the bridge, where everything changes. Out of everything going on here, I feel like the drums and the background vocals are the most striking thing about this outro. What a fantastic progression and dropout. Beautiful monsters.
Weevil Bride - 8/10
The finale. This riff here is extremely well-done. The tone here is somehow piercingly bright and concerningly dark at the same time. The lyricals themes of the album also come to a head here. This chorus is another incredibly written and performed beast; just wait until it’s modulated. The second verse lays away with the subtleties and strikes at the head. And I just need to know that everything is fine, and everyone’s alright. This bridge also kicks ass, with its heart-pouding combination of guitars and toms. Then, comes the heaviest part of the entire album: Yes, please. Then we are snapped out of the masochism and lifted back to hear the main point of the album, before the intro riff carries us into an uncertain but complete conclusion. After the “true” song ends, there is a long passage of somber horns and a tranquil, almost lullaby-esque keyboard. There’s something extremely nostalgic about this outro to me, but I still can’t put my finger on where it comes from. This section almost feels like the music they play after the end of a play, as the lights come on and you make your way down the dimly-lit theater steps on slightly numb and shaky legs. The story is over; this is your time to reflect.
The main reason I wanted to write about this album in particular is because I feel like it hasn’t gotten the attention it’s deserved. It truly feels like a masterpiece worthy of widespread recognition and praise, but despite being released over a decade ago, few people have even heard of this band. It feels like injustice, not only for Rishloo’s efforts, but for the people who would connect with this album as much as I have. Also, there’s the slightly selfish hope that increased attention would incentivize the band to work on more new stuff, or better yet, remaster their older works.
In any case, It’s very late, my back hurts because my spine hates my nervous system, and I need to actually get to sleep tonight so I can heal the godforsaken nerve that wedged itself in my inner workings yesterday. On a scale from “Your all-time low just lowered again”, to “Want some? Yes, please”, I give Feathergun a “Oh, what beautiful monsters”.

Yoruichi’s volume poem has been discussed at length before by the talented Saranel. Another translation which largely accords can be found here. I have taken some slight liberties with both to match the Japanese order. (Also, 溶け出す is given by Wiktionary as "begin to dissolve,” so “molten” feels more appropriate to me than “thawing.”)
What I’d like to talk more about today is how that ties in with what I imagine to be her Indo-Japanese heritage, as alluded to in my headcanon re-rendering of Soul Society’s ‘Original Sin’. That said, that post is not at all necessary to understanding this one, as plenty of people have conjectured that Yoruichi is of (fully or partially) Indian descent. Here’s an example from a long-abandoned twin blog. I find their idea very interesting, although I don’t quite agree when it comes to my interpretation. I’ll get back to that in a minute.
Cats seem to have domesticated themselves in the Fertile Crescent approximately 8,000 years ago. The traits associated with cats as pets arose approximately 3,500 years ago in Egypt. As such, they postdate the origins of the Rigveda, having arrived in India later than much of Hindu mythology was established. Cats appear only twice in Hindu mythology, and don’t have much importance therein. The major occurrence involves one which serves as a vahana (mount) for the goddess Shashthi, and the minor one involves the story of Ganesha and the cat. In other words, there’s essentially nothing in Hindu myth about cats. (Although killing them is apparently considered quite the sin, requiring offerings in gold to atone for. Likewise, Parashara recommended keeping a black cat...)
I’m by no means an expert on this, but Hinduism isn’t a monolithic bloc. There are four main denominations: Vaishnavism (focused on Vishnu), Shaivism (focused on Shiva), Shaktism (focused on Shakti and Goddess worship), and Smartism (non-focused). Shaktism is what I want to focus on. The tl;dr version is basically ‘God is a Woman’. Now, cats are associated with Shaktism, but that’s not what I’m really interested in here.
There are either 10 or 12 Goddesses in Shaktism. Among them are Kali, the chief goddess of time, creation, destruction, and power; and among the expanded set, Durga, the goddess of war. What’s interesting is that Durga has apparently become Kali, and vice-versa (which is perhaps unsurprising as they’re all aspects of Devi.) But I would like to direct your attention to this comment:
One interpretation of Kali's tongue is that the red tongue symbolizes the rajasic nature being conquered by the white (symbolizing sattvic) nature of the teeth.
You might find it interesting that:
Rajas is the quality of passion, activity, neither good nor bad and sometimes either, self-centeredness, egoistic, individualizing, driven, moving, dynamic Sattva is the quality of balance, harmony, goodness, purity, universalizing, holistic, constructive, creative, building, positive attitude, luminous, serenity, being-ness, peaceful, virtuous
These two aspects are notably very identified with red and white. (The third guṇa, Tamas, is associated with black but is rather muddled in what it represents, mostly lethargy and negative qualities.) Don’t they start to sound a bit familiar...? Now, about that tongue of Kali’s...

While I’m probably just finding patterns I want to find here, my interpretation of Yoruichi is not at all associated with Shiva, but rather with Kali (to what capacity and how much of this is push and how much is pull is a more open question).

i have caught up with the magnus archives.
when i started listening, i started a text file to note down any thoughts/confusion/analysis/jokes i had as i listened. i isolated a few bits of it into standalone text posts that i already posted, but here is the whole thing, my long-form liveblog
thoughts on the magnus archive as i listen
jonny sims gives an impassioned performance of someone's statement-- a diegetic impassioned performance, as we witness it being interrupted and resuming-- and follows it up with his own judgement of merciless doubt. classic. why the impassioned performance? he's just a nerd. i dearly hope this is the fandom consensus
every episode ends at the perfect volume to which i have adjusted it, and then i start the next episode and it blares in my ears. i think the volume of the intro must be like 1.75x the volume of the rest
*makes a serious effort to listen to and remember the name and date at the beginning of the statement recording* *forgets completely within 2 minutes*
i saw a fanart of gerard keay and learned [1] that he must be a good guy after all, since they drew him lookin cute, and [2] that his name is not, in fact, jared key. what, am i supposed to be looking at the transcripts? understanding names properly? in my defense, jonny sims clearly articulates "Jared" when he says it. maybe i'm not as good at decoding british accents as i thought. [footnote added in later: ok good i'm not the only one who hears "Jared" and thinks "Jared" instead of "Gerard"]
when gerard keay was described as having numerous eye tattoos on his joints, obviously my first thought was, "including the ankle? so he's count olaf?" because that's definitely a way count olaf would disguise his eye tattoo: by tattooing eyes everywhere else too and becoming The Eye Tattoo Guy. anyway this is part of why i was not at first inclined to think favorably of gerard keay

IT'S MICHAEL!!! i hope michael is a long-term good guy... he's not seeming like a good guy right now... he says he's mostly neutral. vaguely recall seeing a tumblr post about michael in the recent past but that didn't give me any hints and i don't remember it well anyway. michael's voice is good though. good laugh
i'm not good at visualizing characters based on descriptions, let alone based merely on their voices, so the only image i have in my head of jonathan is a furrowed brow
i'm on episode 49 and i don't like jonathan's distrust of his colleagues... i don't understand why his immediate suspicion was that gertrude's murder was an inside job. hasn't he just learned firsthand that the institute is not impenetrable? it's not inconceivable that someone could enter and shoot her and leave. especially when it took place in underground tunnels connected to unknown locations.

so agnes montague was heavily cursed... that's my conclusion after episode 67

the replacer definitely limits its glamour to everyone except one person just so that it can be amused by the distress and confusion of the one person who can see the truth. that must also be the reason it chooses a completely different appearance. it surely COULD replace a person with their exact likeness; it just uses another face for fun, and to be satisfied that it can get away with it.

wasn't expecting to hear from leitner at this point... he's dropping tons of lore here. too much lore. so much is happening. i have to say i kinda like it better when the stakes are not quite so high as this.
so at the end of season 2, tim and martin believe that jonny sims killed this guy, who they probably don't know is leitner... and we the audience believe that elias, now almost certainly a double murderer, has very quietly stabbed leitner to death. do i the audience believe it? i'll keep an open mind for now. things are not always as they seem. except when sasha was replaced with not-sasha, which was exactly as it seemed. [footnote added in later: looks like elias being a double murderer was exactly as it seemed.]
so jonathan sims is the name of the actual guy voicing jonathan sims. it's a cecil situation. so are they someday going to go back and retcon every episode to change his name, like with palmer/baldwin? or does jonathan sims just not mind being a character as well? as long as it doesn't devolve into RPS i guess it's fine. if there's fanart of jonmartin i hope it doesn't depict them as their actors bc that's too close for comfort to RPS

so if these people who are wax figures serve the desolation, and not-sasha was spending time at the wax museum, does that mean there is a connection between the replacer and desolation? i think that would make sense, since both seem to enjoy making people feel bad feelings. also i'm starting to think that agnes was not actually cursed, but that would mean she burned that guy on purpose after being nice to him... was she just really selfish in that way? using him to experience Dating and mutilating him when he crossed the line, so she punished him as a cruel goodbye? or just building up his hopes so they will be even more fun to burn down when the time comes?

well, they did something i didn't expect them to do with this show: create a compelling in-universe reason for jon to read statements aloud. because obviously until now there was none.
jon did the cockney accents. (insert emoji for indescribable feeling)
here's the purpose of the pit: if we all climb in the muddy pit together at night, the earthquake will only jiggle us gently and no one will be inside collapsing buildings to be crushed. it's only logical
ok i was gonna say this before but why is jon still at georgie's house??? he's not on the run for murder anymore, right? he has an apartment with all his stuff in it, right? [footnote added in later: i still don't understand why it was like this.]
i will confess that usually once the credits start to roll i zip to the next episode, but this time i zoned out a bit and it's really funny that jonny sims reads out "Rate and Review Us Online" in his archivist voice

everyone's morality is much more gray than i at first anticipated. the only people who seem to be solidly and earnestly on the side of good, as much as possible, are jonathan and martin and basira and georgie and maybe tim?
so michael just died and was overtaken by pseudo-helen? neo-helen? ok. that's kinda too bad, as i enjoyed michael's terrible laugh and unpredictability. but the feeling of michael being revealed as having been michael shelley feels somewhat similarly disappointing (but a bit less staggeringly groan-inducing) to when the mysterious koro-sensei in assassination classroom was revealed to have been a twink in his past. because of course he was. (that's when i stopped reading that manga. too precipitously dumb to sustain my suspension of disbelief.) it's like, ok, you had an interestingly mysterious character going on, but having solved the mystery, what interestingness is left? not much. fortunately this was resolved by promptly ending the existence of this michael and instead introducing new and improved helen

it was a few episodes ago now but i noticed that when jon clearly articulated "Jared" referring to gerard, elias was like "Jared? you mean Gerard Keay?" (pronouncing it like "Gerard.") there is definitely a disagreement between these two (actors) about how to pronounce that name

peter, as an avatar of the lonely, is easy to play like a cheap whistle because as someone who clearly hates spending time around other people, he is not keen to the symptoms of being played.
elias is like "you'll have to go into the lonely to get him" and jon's probably thinking "but then at least we'll be in the lonely... ~*~*~together~*~*~"
i think martin's whole thing for most of the series has been that he sounds a little doofy, for lack of a better word, and people constantly underestimate his intelligence. and now he has played peter lukas like a cheap whistle and forced me to realize that by taking for granted that he was being successfully manipulated by peter lukas, i too was underestimating martin... and his pure love for jon <:3c no but seriously i even remember explicitly making a mental note to remember that martin is smartin but it fell by the wayside as my emotions (of sadness that jon and martin seemed to be growing further apart) took precedent
i work a non-verbal job just doing mundane tasks and that gives me all the time in the world to think about things like "if they were to have jon and martin reunite in a tearful embrace, how would you convey the physical contact in an audio format? like, whap? soft thud?"
jon enters the lonely and voiceover peter comes in to try and factcheck the ship
i guess it makes sense that peter would try to do the ritual for the lonely all by himself
did he kill peter by asking him to death? or did peter just self-destruct rather than be forced to answer?
the way jon snapped martin out of the loneliness just by making him look at his face... that's powerful. as a lonely person, i know that the most cry-making thing you can realize when you feel alone is that another person is, in fact, there with you
martin went for a walk and now it's thunderstorming. i wonder if he came back as soon as it started raining and now he's standing nearby invisibly as jon reads the intimidating magnus statement. ...I GUESS NOT
i plan to read through the transcripts of all the episodes (as it’s faster than re-listening, though i might selectively re-listen) so that i may better understand some things and answer some questions in this post that i didn’t ultimately resolve. i can’t say i was paying 101% attention all the way through. also april is very far away

Intro
We first heard about Amazon introducing Machine Learning as service at

We decided to give it a try.
Test Drive
The documentations by Amazon for its Machine Learning service is excellent.

For someone with prior experience with Machine Learning concepts, it really only took me 15 minutes to get familiar with it to load up data in 5 minutes, run the model for 10 minutes, run evaluation for 5 minutes and wrap up.
The cost is pretty low if you manage it well. Eg I believe
• Data analysis, model training, and model evaluation will cost $0.42 per compute hour. • Batch predictions will cost $0.10 for every 1,000 predictions, rounded up to the next 1,000.
Loading Up Data
Here I encounter the first aspect that I didn’t like. I could only use Amazon S3 or RedShift as data source and couldn’t use existing links I had eg Dropbox. That would be very troublesome (and expensive?) if I had to migrate large volumes of data for AWS Machine Learning.
Here I loaded up a price series data of a futures contract and the size was about 3 Meg and about 150K rows of data.
The ease of use of Amazon Machine Learning started to show. It automatically figures out the data type and what model to use (numerical regression in this case).
There are plenty of default recommended settings which are industry standard best practices. So it is good that the AWS Machine Learning tools just recommend them to make things easier for the user.
Then comes another part I didn’t like. I expected the analysis to be spiffy fast. However, the modeling took about 10 minutes and evaluaton took about 5 minutes which is lower than what I took using slow Python SkLearn on my slow PC for this data set.
You can see some of the logs generated too.
Finally the model building and evaluation completes!
You can see some of the performance metrics of the numerical regression model.
Conclusion
Compared to Prediction.IO, 0xData, Python SkLearn etc (not really apples-to-apples comparison) Amazon Machine Learning is actually truly the easiest for Machine Learning newcomers to use due to its wonderful documentations, and easy learning curve. Standard best practice defaults are chosen for you and you frequently just have to press Next Next Next. It has really made Machine Learning a commodity and easily accessible to all developers. For all newcomers to Machine Learning that want access to Machine Learning, AWS Machine Learning is perhaps the best set of tools I have found and used.
However, for anyone that gets out of the initial learning phase and needs to customize Machine Learning techniques and parameters to use eg try out clustering, different kinds of classifications (eg SVM, Random Forest, SGD, different ensemble learning methods) etc, Amazon Machine Learning may not be for you. It seems to lack flexibility for advanced use. For anything more than basic use, I would definitely just stick to Python SkLearn running on a low cost and fast VPS like DigitalOcean instead of using AWS Machine Learning.
