in case you've missed it, and I'm assuming most of you have, we're having a presidential election here in Finland. First round is currently going on, so I thought I'd give you a quick run down of our candidates!
(in alphabetical order, party in parentheses)
Mika Aaltola (independent): Has mainly worked in academia and apparently has experience in international politics, which is good for the job. I honestly know next to nothing about this dude, but he seems to positively radiate Just Some Guy energy. What would be interesting about him winning: I have no idea. Chances of winning: Ehhh - but it wouldn't be the first time we get a president from outside the daily politics.
Li Andersson (Left Alliance): current leader of the Left Alliance, former Minister of Education. What most people seem to say about her: "she's clearly the best choice, but has no chance of winning so I won't be voting for her." What would be interesting about her winning: first Left Alliance president Chances of winning: Unfortunately slim. Left Alliance is a small party and half of the country still seems to think they're Evil Communists.
Sari Essayah (Christian Democrats): she's also the leader of her party. Most known for being a former racewalker and religious. What would be interesting about her winning: How the hell did it happen??? Chances of winning: zero.
Pekka Haavisto (Green League): Former Minister of the Environment, International Development, and Foreign Affairs (three different terms, not all at once). He was born in 1958 and hasn't done much beyond politics. He's been in the presidential race twice already too, both times losing to our current president, Sauli Niinistö. What would be interesting about him winning: first gay president. Chances of winning: he made it to the final round twice already, so maybe third time's a charm? He has been polling first this time around.
Jussi Halla-aho (Finns Party): a prominent rightwing blogger, a Slavic linguist by education, and the current Speaker of the Parliament. He's "immigration critical" in the same vein "gender criticals" tend to be. He's is considered something of an intellectual in the rightwing circles despite having the vibes of an anthropomorphic raisin, and has amassed a cult following - who literally call him Mestari (master, but in Finnish the vibes are more a master of a trade and not some dude who spanks you in the bedroom. What would be interesting about him winning: finding out if I can immigrate to Denmark. Chances of winning: none if I can help it, but like I said, he does have a very solid fanbase.
Hjallis Harkimo (Movement Now): best known for being the owner of an ice-hockey team or something. His real name is Harry and for some reason he has been elected into the parliament twice. I assume it's the famous allure of a "successful businessman" or because he's something of a celebrity? Who knows. What would be interesting about him winning: How did it happen? Chances of winning: slim.
Olli Rehn (Centre Party): Served as the Minister of Economic Affairs for like a year under our most fuck-witted prime minister in recent history. Not much else to say about it. Somehow seems older than Pekka Haavisto tho he's actually younger. What would be interesting about him winning: absolutely nothing. He's so dull it's almost offensive. Chances of winning: who knows? Maybe he'll be a dark horse if all other candidates fall flat.
Alexander Stubb (National Coalition Party): Former Prime Minister, and former Minister of Finance. He's ehhhhhh not the worst possible option, honestly, and is on the more liberal side of the Rich Getting Richer party. What would be interesting about him winning: how will he be different from our current (National Coalition Party) president, I guess Chances of winning: last I checked, he was polling second, so I guess it's a possibility?
Jutta Urpilainen (Social Democratic Party): Former Minister of Finance. Social Democrats are one of the biggest parties we have, but they took a while deciding on who to pick. She's alright. Social Democrats are usually fine, and she'a long term Social Democrat. What would be interesting about her winning: uhh... possibly the first president to have released a Christmas album? Chances of winning: I just don't think she's that popular, to be honest. But she might make it into top three at least, like I said, it's one of the biggest parties behind her.

Need Participants for a Gender Psych Survey!
Hello all!
I am in need of some more participants for a project in my gender psych class. I have a few participants already, but I am trying to gather as many as I can for this project.
The goal of this survey is to gather opinions about whether the sex/gender of a stay-at-home parent and/or their parenting style can determine how a child will come to view gender roles.
For example, if a child has a stay-at-home dad who has a permissive parenting style and a mom who works a 9-5 and has an authoritarian parenting style, will a child still develop the view that women are caretakers (as well as other gender stereotypes)?
I appreciate anyone who takes the survey and I thank you in advance!
Reblogs are very valuable!

I hate, hate, HATE the term “affordable housing.” I hate that we’ve normalized it. I hate that we just accept that the majority of housing, a basic human right, is unaffordable to much of the population. Housing should be affordable as a baseline. If rich people want to add arcades and gold-plated hot tubs on top so be it, but everyone, everyone, regardless of income level, should have access to a clean, comfortable home with enough light and space to make life worth living.

So what does being centrist/right leaning mean to you then? i know people who self describe like that who range all around… “hmm if u think about it fascism could work…” “abortion is bad because it makes women act whorish which is bad because… um. I don’t get any and think the no sex until marriage line will help me lock down a bang maid” “gay is bad because it’s caused by parasites” “xyz race is inferior let’s look at the stats” ……..and then I know people who say that over like…. Disagreeing with the trans stuff (despite leftists also disagreeing) and being against “Stalinist communism” and “government regulations” and while I usually find these people myopic and contradictory plus conveniently ignoring all the other ways to approach actual free associations of community mutual support, they aren’t… the other shit.
Thank you for clarifying your tone, as it’s hard to understand which angle people are coming at in digital conversations.
Tbh, you said a lot and I’m still trying to make sense of it all, it might also be because I’m tired, so my brain isn’t functioning at its peak. I want to do more readings on different forms of government (Marxism, Stalinism, Fascism, etc), as I honestly don’t know the philosophy and structures of each. I also want to read more philosophical feminism from de Beauvoir, Friedan, Dworkin, etc.
Just like with everyone, we all agree with different things and I really don’t want to get into the details on everything left/right that I am for/against, as it’s too much to list. If you have a specific example, I can tell you where I currently stand.
I can focus on the radfem/trans stuff since you focused on that in another ask.
Yeah I often times forget radfem is left. A lot of right-leaning influencers I tune into always dismiss any feminist narrative as unnecessary. I feel like the trans exclusionary part is sort of right because the left is very trans-inclusive. This is probably where you see some contradictions in what I’ve posted. That’s because, like with anyone, no one is fully this or that. I cherry pick from the left/right on what I feel is correct or what makes the best sense to me, with respect to my own morals and values.
Another contradiction is that I believe some men are actually trans women and that they aren’t faking it, like most trans women (or trans non-binary) people seem today. The difficult part is self-identification. I am more likely to believe a man is a trans woman from a few years ago compared to now, since everyone and their child is coming out as trans or non-binary.
Let’s say I know a trans woman and I get to know them. If they appear genuine in how they ‘feel female’ (I also have issues with that statement) then I feel more inclined to believe them. I would still want separate safe spaces for women and trans women though. I agree with the statement that trans women are not women. No amount of surgery, HRT, or ways of dress can make them a real woman. I feel they are a type of woman, since I want to believe they feel they were born the wrong sex. I have a feeling that my thoughts on this will change, as I’m starting to question, and look more into whether it’s actually possible to be ‘trapped’ in the wrong body. I agree that a trans woman doesn’t get fully treated or seen as a woman. The only instances, which falls in line with you saying “not in all areas of life”, where they would is if they pass so well people don’t know they’re trans. But yeah, as soon as someone knows they are biologically male, they won’t be treated as a real woman. I believe most people are faking when they say they treat trans women and women the same way. Sure they can easily adjust to call them she/her and maybe do ‘girl talk’, but there’s still those underlying feelings that they are different and were raised male. I still have ways to go on figuring I it where I stand. I still have more learning to to and more listening as well. I hope this helps you understand my take on my little random blog. I appreciate the ask and know that I will do research in time. I am slow to doing stuff that is genuinely good for my personal growth, as I go with the flow of what I’m in the mood to do and what I’m able to focus on.

I do not now, nor have I ever, expected Gideon to take a principaled stance on the forever war. I just don't think it matters to her. Ostensibly she's on her dad's side because her dad has been on a parenting kick lately, and the best she ever got from her mum was goodbye with a stay of execution. But if she were confronted with the ethics of the situation? Asked her opinion? I don't think she'd have one. She may be a prince, but at heart she's still the abused eighteen year old girl who fought tooth and nail to join the army just for a way out

So you know I struggle with my combination of political opinions? And that nobody else shares them with me? Well, either I've gotten used to it and being someone literally everyone else on earth has a problem with doesn't phase me anymore. Or it phases me so much now that it broke me and I go numb whenever I think about it, in which case it doesn't bother me anymore anyway. Not sure which it is.

Every well-thought-out rebuttal to dogma, every scrap of intelligent logic, every absurdist reduction of some bullying stance is the antidote. Every request for the clarification of the vague, every poke at smug banality, every pen stroke in a document under revision is the antidote… We still have the ability to rise up… keep reminding ourselves that representations of the world are never the world itself.
George Saunders on storytelling and the antidote to media manipulation.

imho the left had just as much issue with philosemitism as Christian Zionists but in different ways and it’s become super obvious with the open season on the Jews. Like there’s been years of posts treating Judaism like the ultimate liberal self-help book rather than its own complex and varied set of traditions and cultures with their own cultural inter community complexities and problems (right wing tziyonut, the political actions of medinas yisrael, and colorism among others) as the oppositional Good Religion that was everything Christianity was not. Like people kept holding up Judaism as the Good Ones when it came to abortion, birth control, lgbt rights, trans rights, and so forth and it’s true many Jews (though not all) do hold progressive opinions on those topics including those who consider themselves religious but treating a whole group as either a moral positive or negative is so strange especially once after some Jews in a specific part of the world started doing something really bad, people everywhere have decided that Jews as a whole and Judaism as a whole are morally corrupt and impure and at the heart of the worlds problems
