Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Chapter 12: Professor Umbridge
“‘Well, I think it’s a pity we’re not trying for a bit of inter-house unity,’ said Hermione crossly.” – I think in all those years at Hogwarts Dumbledore’s Army is actually the only time we see students from different houses working together. (Except of course Slytherin, and I wonder how they would have reacted if a Slytherin student would have wanted to join them) There are no activities outside classes where all the students can join, where there would be a chance to form interhouse-friendships, which is a pity.
“‘It’s best to know what the enemy is saying,’ said Hermione darkly, and she unfurled the newspaper and disappeared behind it, not emerging until Harry and Ron had finished eating.” – I get Hermione’s point: you need to know what exactly the Prophet writes, what they say about Dumbledore and Harry, in order to understand what the Ministry wants (as the Prophet functions as the mouthpiece of the Ministry), but also to understand the people who are currently not trusting Dumbledore and Harry. You need to understand their perspective in order to reach out to them, to convince them. Not like Harry who is just angry at everyone who doesn’t believe him, even if they might have good reasons not to.
“Harry and Ron had so far managed to scrape passes in this subject only by copying Hermione’s notes before exams; she alone seemed able to resist the soporific power of Binns’s voice. […]‘How would it be,’ she asked them coldly, as they left the classroom for break (Binns drifting away through the blackboard), ‘if I refused to lend you my notes this year?’” – I’m really on Hermione’s side here. It is one thing to help out your friends, it is another thing if they simply take for granted that you will get them through their exams. Hermione is right when she accuses them that they don’t even try to listen. There is a difference between helping your friends and exploiting them.
“And yet, he thought, as they joined the queue lining up outside Snape’s classroom door, she had chosen to come and talk to him, hadn’t she? She had been Cedric’s girlfriend; she could easily have hated Harry for coming out of the Triwizard maze alive when Cedric had died, yet she was talking to him in a perfectly friendly way, not as though she thought him mad, or a liar, or in some horrible way responsible for Cedric’s death … yes, she had definitely chosen to come and talk to him, and that made the second time in two days … and at this thought, Harry’s spirits rose.” – Awww, young love. I feel that at least partly Cho was interested in Harry because of Cedric, to hear his version of events, to learn the truth. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t genuinely interested in Harry. But Cedric’s death is only two months ago, and as Hermione later that year kindly explains to Harry Cho is very much confused about her feelings, to ones she still has for Cedric and those for Harry. (Which of course leads naturally to a lot of crying which Harry can’t really deal with *sigh*)
“His eyes rested on Harry and his lip curled. Harry glared back, feeling a grim pleasure at the idea that he would be able to give up Potions after fifth year.” – Not if you want to become an Auror. But hey at least he will never have potions again with Snape after fifth year, so there is that.
Examining Harry’s potion Snape can tell what exactly Harry did wrong so this would imply it is perhaps a very common mistake, that Snape has witnessed before. Anyway, he vanishes all of Harry’s potion, giving him the same result as if Harry had done nothing at all the whole lesson, not even giving him the chance to earn any points. Did I mention that Snape is the worst teacher? Because he is.
“‘Hermione and me have stopped arguing,’ he said, sitting down beside Harry. ‘Good,’ grunted Harry. ‘But Hermione says she thinks it would be nice if you stopped taking out your temper on us,’ said Ron.” – Hermione of course is right, and Harry at least feels a bit ashamed. Again, anger is not logical and sometimes we hurt those lest deserving. But also it was Hermione and Ron’s bickering that had annoyed Harry, which is very common for them. And to some the reason why they can’t get behind the whole Hermione-Ron-relationship. Why would you be with someone you always disagree with, always fight with? First of all I don’t see the arguments between Ron and Hermione as fighting. They are friendly banter. But this is also how their relationship works – which is different than the one between Harry and Ron or Harry and Hermione or even Harry and Ginny. And perhaps Ron and Hermione have to work harder for their relationship to work. But I also feel that their arguments are a sign for how much they care about each other, oddly enough. They wouldn’t bother that much for anyone.
“‘I never remember my dreams,’ said Ron, ‘you say one.’ ‘You must remember one of them,’ said Harry impatiently. He was not going to share his dreams with anyone.” – Because Harry doesn’t talk about his feelings, yet alone his nightmares. He bottles them up until they come out all at once. Again, not very healthy.
Umbridge constantly reminds her students to raise their hands before they speak, trying to control the conversation, and who is allowed to speak at all. Which again shows that she doesn’t think of her students as equals, or people with their own minds. Everything about her teaching method is about power and control. She is the very opposite of Lupin (who she addresses as half-breed, showing once again her true colours), who always respected his students and encouraged them to think for themselves.
I also don’t get the logic behind the Ministry’s decision to only teach defensive spells in theory. According to them learning how to use those spells would imply you need them which would imply that there are actual dangers in the world you need to learn to defend yourself against. But as they deny Voldemort’s return this can’t be true. But for one thing there are other dangers out there. And the other thing is that it made me wonder why this subject exists in the first place. Because obviously the Wizarding World is dangerous enough that they think it is necessary for children to learn how to defend themselves. I never learned that at school (even though sometimes I wish I had). Does this subject exist in other schools as well? (It was said that in Durmstrang they actually learn Dark Arts, not how to defend them.) If school prepares you for life than life as a wizard/witch is dangerous enough that you need to learn defensive spells. And it is one thing to deny the truth but another to leave an entire school defenceless.
The other reasoning of course is that the Ministry believes Dumbledore uses his school to build up an army, and in trying to prevent this, this is exactly what happens.
I also wonder how much Umbridge had calculated Harry’s behaviour, that perhaps she had expected him to call her a liar and to use him to set an example.
“‘It was murder,’ said Harry. He could feel himself shaking. He had hardly spoken to anyone about this, least of all thirty eagerly listening classmates. ‘Voldemort killed him and you know it.’” – Ah, Hogwarts and student numbers. We never get an official number how many students attend Hogwarts in the books. I think J.K. Rowling said a number in an interview once but whatever. Many times I saw the fact that Harry shared his dormitory with 4 other students as basis: 5 boys, therefore 5 girls, therefore 10 students per house, 40 students per year, 280 students in total. Which for one thing wouldn’t be a lot. But also, I don’t think the Sorting Hat has a quota he works with. The only Gryffindor girls from Harry’s year that are mentioned are Hermione, Lavender and Parvati, so really I think there are only 8 Gryffindor students in the fifth year. So the other 22 students from that 30 students class must be from another house, as we know that two houses usually share classes. It is very likely that the houses don’t have the same amount of students. Which then makes the whole house point competition not very fair.
“Professor McGonagall sat down behind her desk, frowning at Harry. Then she said, ‘Have a biscuit, Potter.’” – This will always be my favourite McGonagall line.
“‘Do you really think this is about truth or lies? It’s about keeping your head down and your temper under control!’” – I think Harry is still idealistic in the way that he thinks the truth should always matter the most. That this is a fight worth fighting for. But there are times where the truth matters, and times where it is best to keep your mouth shut. Umbridge is not interested in the truth, and neither is Fudge. All they care about is power and control. And Harry learns this lesson the hard way.
“‘Well, I’m glad you listen to Hermione Granger at any rate,’ she said, pointing him out of her office.” – I love how easily McGonagall can tell that Harry is simply repeating  Hermione’s words. And that she is glad that he has at least someone at his side who sees the things for what they truly are, because Harry himself is too blind to see them.

Hey guys! chapter 10 of our house on fire is up today, and I wanted to announce it, and what better way to do that than with some headcanons for the crackship of the day: mcGonagall/Trelawney (it’s vaguely related to the chapter I promise)
(the ones in bold are by the amazing @dannikathewomanika!)
enemies to lovers
TENDER PALM READINGS
“Minerva......your love line indicates a loving and long term relationship in the near future.....on an unrelated note, do you have any plans for the next hogsmeade trip?”
Mcgonagall: my plans for the next hogsmeade weekend? Can't you see that yourself?
“Some things are too far beyond the veil for even me to know, Minerva”
and then the next Hogsmeade weekend shes there! (Not that Sybill is surprised or anything, she saw this coming of course)
Sybill thinks she’s subtle
But Minnie’s actually the subtle one
Trelawney: hmm... I see... in the future you'll meet a dark haired stranger wearing... shawls? a thin woman
McGonagall: Sybill, youre just describing yourself
Trelawney: “is that so? I hadn’t noticed”
they flirt SO MUCH in the hallways their students hate it
Although Lavender Brown is the biggest tregonagall shipper
Her and Parvati patil go out of their way to set them up
like oh noooo, all the teacups have "accidentally" fallen on the ground and are unusable now :(((( guess we'll have to get proffesor McGonagall to transfigure us some new ones
Strolling though the halls with Trelawney, “oh look, there’s professor McGonagall, let’s say hi! Oh look we’re on the seventh floor and there’s the room of requirement set up to be all romantic!! What a silly coincidence”
and how weird! I didn't know that you could lock it so that the two people who are in there are trapped together..
Trelawney: “its all thanks to Umbridge, really. Without her, we never would have been more than colleagues who resented each other”
McGonagall, taking Trelawneys hand lovingly: “and look at where we are now”
They’re doing an interview for witch weekly. A picture of them gazing into each other’s eyes is the front page of the magazine
It’s the best selling issue since Gilderoy Lockhart was on the cover

Howdy could I get a ship request? Could I get a golden trio era ship. I am a female gryffindor, I am short af like 4’11, i have short frizzy/curly brown hair, brown eyes and GoLdEn skin. I love to do sports, take naps, tale care of my plants. I am what you call stupid brave and pretty darn stubborn, I live to take risks and do what I want. I hope this is enough I also hope you have a great day. TOODLES!!
Hey! Hope you have a great day as well! I apologise for the wait. I lost all inspiration.
I ship you with Neville Longbottom. He would be really shy where you would be more active. You would become friends during your first year. It would be a fun friendship, often helping proffesor Sprout with the greenhouses and having interesting conversations. This would continue over the years. There would be a lot of differences between you two. You would definitely be more popular while Neville would be the kid mostly everyone liked, but didn’t have any real friends. Around fourth year he got a growth spurt while you stayed short. You two would definitely go to the yule ball together but as friends. Fifth year both of you would join Dumbledore’s Army. Both of you would stay up for hours practising spells. When the DA was discovered and banned, you would decide to make Umbridge’s live a living hell. The weasley twins would quickly try and work with you. After they would leave, you’d continue on your own. At the end of the year, both of you would go to the ministry. You wouldn’t even know what for, but Neville went and something inside you would tell you to protect him. During that battle you’d be attacked by the brains, just like Ron. During sixth year you and Neville would finally get together, something everyone but you saw coming. He would love your secret passion for your plants, and your less secret passion for quidditch. You would love how he was always ready to help everyone. Your relationship would basically be the same as your friendship had been; fun and sweet, just with kisses in between. When at the end of the year Harry would decide to dissapear again, asking you and the others to protect Hogwarts, both you and Neville would agree. You would have to keep an eye on Malfoy, which would end in him petrifying you. By the end of the evening Dumbledore would be dead, killed by Snape apparently, which would be the official start of the war. Seventh year would be absolute hell. Neville and you would, together with Ginny and Luna, be the leaders of the small group that tried to resist. During the battle of Hogwarts you would try to stay together but when the wall that also killed Fred would fall you’d lose him. The next time you would see Neville he would be the one who openly dared to speak up against Voldemort. You wouldn’t think twice and run to join him. When the battle, and with it the war, was finally over you and Neville would help to care for the injured.
After that, you’d live together in an apartment in london. He would take you to meet his parents. His mother would give you a gum wrapper, something that would move him deeply. His grandmother questioned you for hours before becoming the nicest person ever.
-
Again, I am extremely sorry for the long wait.

❝ You've fallen down the rabbit hole and have been chained to the other side. ❞ JAKE GYLLENHAAL? No, that’s actually DENNIS CREEVEY. Only FORTY ONE years old, this GRYFFINDOR alumni works as a HISTORY OF MAGIC PROFESSOR and is sided with THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. HE identifies as CIS MALE and is a MUGGLEBORN who is known to be ECCENTRIC, VOLUBLE, and IMPULSIVE but also WELL READ, WARM, and SINCERE. { ellie, 18, est, she/her }
hey howdy hey there, how’s it going? i’m ellie and while i’m a true slytherin at heart, i’m super duper excited to be playing my favorite gryffindor, dennis creevey. if you click right HERE you will be able to find his statistics and if you read below there’s a sort of brief backstory. if you wanna plot slide into those ims for me, otherwise i’ll be getting into starters here in a little bit.
dennis was born and raised in the typical irish household, his father was a milkman and his mother stayed at home and took up odd jobs whenever it was needed. him and his older brother watched cartoons on the tv and when they were forced to do anything else, they would play wizards and kings and knights. they would come up with extravagant stories and throw themselves into them, sometimes wishing that was their life. when they were old enough they went to school, and they brought their friends into it until the day when their stories became reality. colin was the first to find out he was a wizard, he had gotten a letter of acceptance to hogwarts on his 11th birthday and he was thriled. their family had to adjust and it took a long time to get to diagon alley to get the things on the list. not to say dennis was jealous, but he had hoped to be able to experience what his brother did.
then came dennis’ 11th birthday and just as his older brother had assured him, he would go to this magical school too. he was excited to live what he could only imagine in his dreams. but of course, things shift sort of quickly. the first year he was in hogwarts he had experienced the world at lightning speed. his first experience was falling into the lake, which he’d claim was the coolest thing to ever happen to him. and then the excitement of the triwizard tournament was in full force until it all went into turmoil. the boy who lived was attacked, people died, and voldemort was defeated. he started to realize that there was a lot more to the wizarding world than butterbeer and casting spells and he realized that being a muggleborn was something that was a fault in this world and that he was in more danger than he had been in when it was all just pretend. his second year he had been worried about coming back after the year before and the only reason he had was that he trusted his brother. of course, this year had been difficult with dolores umbridge and everything else, so a group of students called dumbledore’s army came together and dennis joined it. it had helped him feel more comfortable with the school and all around they were able to make their lives better that year. during his third year, nothing much happened. words of attacks on muggleborns and sympathizers circulated around but he didn’t experience much other than a normal school year himself. it wasn’t until the next year when he would realize that the conflicts were gonna hit closer to home when his brother was found dead during the winter holidays trying to get some last minute gifts. dennis received word within a few hours and suddenly everything was different. him and his family buried colin a few days later and at the end of the break he returned to hogwarts devastated and grieving, what else could he do? well, that’s when dennis started writing. it started as a coping mechanism for everything he was feeling and started turning into his experience of the past four years and the future he would experience with his blood status. he didn’t even realize that it’d one day be published.
after completing his education at hogwarts, dennis got a job at the daily prophet. he still doesn’t know how, but it didn’t matter. he’d move to london to start his career and he never went anywhere without a photo of his brother.
about four years into his work, he had met a muggle and the two shared the night. he tried calling her back, but he never got and contact until nine months later when he was left with two children to care for and not enough money to do it with. he had to leave the paper and got an interview with the company his father had been working for in their london branch as a smaller manager. he had lost a lot of contact with the wizarding world and he hated his work, but loved his family so he trucked on. eventually he published his first novel about his years at hogwarts.
somewhat luckily, that novel got him a letter from the then headmaster of hogwarts and somehow landed him a gig as a proffesor about the time his children got their acceptance letters and he had no idea what to do. thankfully, nobody could do worse than the ghost of cuthbert binns and he loved learning about the history of the world he’d been introduced to all those years ago.
seven years into his teaching career, his childhood idol and someone who he now respected was murdered along with two more wizards who he’d come to know. it was devastating and he had no other choice but to tell his children about the dangers they’re going to have to look out for. he started to fear for his family as memories of his experiences started flooding back and suspicions about his coworkers he didn’t quite know started to arise. it wasn’t until he got word that the order of the phoenix had risen again that his suspicions were warranted and he didn’t hesitate to join.

Feelings Suck pt.1
Series: Coming Undone
AU: Dahlia is Gay
Pairing: Dahlia X Tyler
Warnings: Queer Questioning
The dark haired witch glances around the halls, as everyone is suffering under Umbridge's rule. It couldn't be any later than early afternoon, but Dahlia was already exhausted. Most days she would be running a muck with Fred and George, but today she couldn't keep her mind straight.
Literally.
Her eyes kept flying to Tyler beside her, her platinum blonde hair silky smooth with gorgeous shining grey eyes. She was once again going off on a rant about how much she likes Harry, and with every word out of her mouth Dahlia felt her heart breaks a little more.
She's been dealing with these thoughts for months, but she usually just pushed them aside, telling herself she liked George instead. She was dating him, after all.
But every time they would kiss Dahlia would imagine she was kissing Tyler's soft lips instead of George rougher ones. When George would put his arm around her shoulders and leaning down on her, she'd imagine it was Tyler instead.
Dahlia tried to ignore the thoughts, but today they seemed more intrusive than usual. Every little thought that came to Dahlias head were something about how great Tyler looked, or how much she wanted to hug and kiss her.
But yet, Dahlia knows this would never happen. She's with George, and Tylers been pining after Harry ever since she met him in her first year. But ignoring them would do nothing for her. She needed to talk them out with someone.
Dahlia absentmindedly said goodbye to Tyler, who had Arithmancy, while Dahlia went off to an Astronomy class.
Thankfully, Hadie was in her next class. Hadie was the expert on anything not straight, and having an excuse to talk with her one on one would make this whole thing a little easier.
Dahlia stepped into Astronomy, yawning. Now that her mind wasn't distracted by Tyler every 2 seconds, she was exhuasted from her astronomy class last night at 2am. She had decided that reading was more important than going back to sleep. Thank god this was her only class today.
She walked to the front of the class, to where Hadie was sitting with her arms crossed and her head in her hands. Dahlia yawned as she sat down besides the exhausted Hufflepuff.
The whole class was basically asleep at this point, except this one quiet ravenclaw in the back who Dahlia was 90% sure was a vampire. Dahlia shook Hadie awake. Hadie swatted her hand away, but Dahlia stopped, and came down and whispered to her.
"I think I'm gay." Dahlia whispers. Hadie sits straight up immidently, with a huge smile on her face.
"You are?" Hadie yells, a bunch of people grumbling and complaining under their breath. Dahlia glances aside, her face red. Hadie blinks, seeming to finally registering it. Hadie leans in, and lowers her voice to a whisper.
"Wait, aren't you dating George?" Hadie whispers. Dahlia nods slowly.
"I feel so bad about it, but ever since we got back from winter break I can't get Tyler out of my head. I feel like I've been lying to George for months, but I don't have the heart to break up with him." Dahlia begins to ramble. Hadie sighs, as she sets her wand down on the table.
"Well first if you really think your gay, maybe you should break up with him. I'm sure George would understand if you told him." Hadie says with a yawn.
"I know, but Fred says he's had a thing for me since like two years ago. He's completly hooped." Dahlia mumbles.
"Yes, but how long are you going to keep this up? Are you going to marry him, and have kids with him just so you won't break his heart?" Hadie asks.
"No..." Dahlia trails off.
"There will never be a good time to tell him, he'll just have to understand and live with it." Hadie says with a shrug.
"But I-" Dahlia was cut off, by Proffesor Sinistra entering the classroom.
Everyone groaned as she walked in, and Hadie leaned over to whisper as Professor Sinistra began to speak.
"You can't pretend to be straight forever." Hadie says, before laying back down on the table.
"I can't." Dahlia mumbles to herself. She looks up to Professor Sinistra, talking about stars and junk. If only it was that easy.

Quote
Proffesor Umbridge was the villain a generation of young boys learnt to hate, not the supreme evil Voldemort, but a feminine petty bureaucrat who rules through social shaming and enforcement of petty rules. An ubiquitous archetype for sure.
