Randomized Robins AU - Ages + Worst Trait Exercise:
Steph (25):
Says her worst trait is her murderous rages (she is exaggerating for dramatic/comedic effect, she’s killed 3 people tops and for very good reason)
Thinks her worst trait is her spitefulness (one of the few traits she definitely got from her father + one that prevents her from fixing her relationships and living her best possible life. She’ll refuse to interact with someone she dearly loves after an argument (happens significantly less after Tim’s death) or will say things she knows are hurtful just for the sake of having the last word. This trait will worsen in some ways as the list of people who have wronged her and those she loves grows, but will also ease up as she matures and realizes the harm it’s doing to her relationships with those she loves most.)
Her worst trait really is her spitefulness
Cass (26)
Says her worst trait is her self-righteousness (she believes that her goals are righteous and, as a result, she is righteous. Cass becomes very defensive whenever someone questions the mission and often does not second-guess herself. This is a trait she only develops later in life as she grows closer to Bruce/learns to understand herself more/starts to love herself more. But she knows she isn’t perfect and when somebody she trusts criticizes something she is doing she is willing to listen. She just usually isn’t the one to START the introspection.)
Thinks her worst trait is her self-righteousness.
Her worst trait actually is her obsessiveness (she gets it from Bruce and, while not as bad as him, she will easily become preoccupied with her night-life and the mission if someone isn’t there to pull her back. She will do this to the point of self-destruction and it hurts her relationships with the people she loves, especially Steph.)
Tim (24)
Says his worst trait is his spitefulness (he actively rejects the idea of mending his relationships with the older members of the family and this causes him to also lack good relationships with the younger ones)
Thinks his worst trait is his obsessiveness (similar to Cass, if he gets fixated on a task or idea he will neglect everything else in his life in order to dedicate more time to it. Unlike Cass, he will almost never be dragged away from it unless Pierrot snatches control of the body and forces them to take care of themself.)
His worst trait actually is how manipulative he is (the KING of guilt-tripping and using people’s emotions against them. He’ll do whatever he needs to do to get what he wants, he’s not above crocodile tears. And he will do it to whoever he needs (or wants) to with little care for how his actions impact others.)
Pierrot (Insists: “Age doesn’t apply to me! And even if it did, I'd probably be the oldest. Or the youngest! I’d never be a middle child, though.” Mental assessments by the Bats have put him around 21, with a margin of error of 3 years. Pierrot has called this “blatant character assassination by my eternal rival!”)
Says his worst trait is that he is an irredeemable psychopath without any regard for the wellbeing of others (this is a lie and everyone who's important to him understands this).
Thinks his worst trait is his parasitic nature (he literally would not exist had Tim not suffered the way he did. Plus he is a living reminder of one of the worst things that happened to many of his loved ones. He is a parasite injected into a functional person's body and contributes to his continued suffering. This is also a largely incorrect judgement of himself, caused by his actual worst trait.)
His worst trait actually is his limited sense of self (he doesn’t really know who he is outside of ‘inheritor to the legacy of the Joker (a man he despises yet also views as a father)’ and ‘chip in Tim’s brain that became sentient’. He slowly develops an identity over the course of his life and relationships with other people, but he lacks the foundations of identity that most people have. Pierrot will often almost become a caricature of himself and what others perceive him to be because it's the only person he knows how to be. This causes wild swings in how he behaves and relates to others, sometimes to the detriment of himself and others.)
Dick (17)
Says his worst trait is his clinginess (he is a very extraverted person who likes to be around others, which mixed with his fear of abandonment after his parents died means that if he goes a few days without seeing/talking to a friend he will get very anxious.)
Thinks his worst trait is his anger issues (he gets ticked off very easily and will explode on people. He’s kind at his core and is usually very nice, but he has a temper that can escalate significantly. Spoiler (and later Twist) help him channel this anger into something positive.)
His worst trait actually is his anger issues.
Barbara (18)
Says her worst trait is her disability (internalized ableism, she thinks of herself as less valuable than the other Bats because she cannot be out there in the capes like they can. She will grow out of this as she matures and as she learns how invaluable her support for the team is.)
Thinks her worst trait is her disability
Her worst trait actually is her overly-independent nature (In an attempt to overcompensate for everything she can no longer do, she has resolved to do literally everything that she possibly can without any help from others. This results in many instances where she either takes on too much and winds up not being able to fully realize any of her tasks or where she makes her life and the lives of others significantly harder by refusing help when offered/not asking for it when she needs it.)
Damian (16)
Says his worst trait is his perfectionism (he is overly critical of both himself and others, taking any flaw or problem and amplifying it to an absurd degree. This is due in part to his life with the LoA (where even a brief misstep could lead to death), in part to how others treated him initially as Spoiler (any flaw was fixated on and used as a reason to either mistrust him or portray him as unworthy of the mantle), and in part due to the fact that he is Bruce’s son (the only person with worse perfectionism problems than Damian). Gradually, Damian has improved in this regard but it’s still a massive barrier to both his own happiness and his relationships with others.)
Thinks his worst trait is his perfectionism
His worst trait actually is his perfectionism
Duke (16)
Says his worst trait is his definitely-real secret evil side (says this as a ‘my dad is a villain so who knows??’ joke)
Thinks his worst trait is his impulsivity in his words (Sometimes he will crack a joke or say a remark without thinking it through, leading to a LOT of hurt feelings and drama. He’ll say something without thinking it through and wind up seeming insensitive. This isn’t done because of malice, rather because Duke is someone who’s quick to act and speak. But while the mantle of Insight and his awakening powers have helped him with his actions, they do not always help with his loose tongue. As such, Duke gains an unfair reputation in the media as an instigator and will accidentally cause family drama through what he says.)
His worst trait actually is his impulsivity in his words
Jason (14)
Says his worst trait is his bad manners (he grew up on the streets and has no idea how rich-people society works, which he’s pretty insecure about considering he’s now the youngest kid of Bruce freaking Wayne).
Thinks his worst trait is his reactiveness (Jason never got the privilege of planning ahead for various events in his life, so he instead needed to rely on being swift and harsh in how he could react to situations. It’s saved his life on multiple occasions and helps significantly in his role as Spoiler, but it can also lead to extreme overreactions (accidentally causing kidnapping scare after Jason ran away following a fight with Dick) and a struggle to plan things out ahead of time. As he grows more secure in his place in the family and in life, this trait will lessen but never fully dissipate.)
His worst trait actually is his reactiveness
#stephanie brown#cassandra cain#tim drake#dick grayson#barbara gordon#damian wayne#duke thomas#jason todd#batfamily#randomizedrobinsau#I'm debating whether I should tag this with the Joker Junior tag and those related to it for Pierrot#because like...it's not quite that. but it's also very close to that and is the direct result of that.#but Pierrot would fucking HATE to be tagged as that and sees it as an insult to his identity...which he already has problems with#so I don't think I'm gonna#anyways lmao I am totally projecting my younger self onto Barbara. How could I not? She's literally the reason I view my disability#the way that I do and she actively improved my mental health just by existing and saying some of the shit she did when I was in the#stages of accepting my own disability. So yeah I am projecting a lot onto her because I love her and see myself in her.#I'm mostly basing these characterizations on my favorite versions of them (ie Red Robin 2009 Tim and Birds of Prey Barbara).#so I'm taking the traits I like/think fit in this AU and discarding what I think either is bad or doesn't fit or if I just don't like it.#Damian's 'murder gremlin who is a meanie on purpose because he is a meanie' is entirely unappealing to me and also does not fit this AU#I prefer him when he's portrayed as a sympathetic kid (who is still an asshole) and not a demon child. So that's what I'm using.#same with Talia's 'abusive mother who is totally on-board with all of her father's bullshit and will kill someone for no reason' version#I have read enough comics to know what I like/what is most important and what I don't like/what is#BLATANT CHARACTER ASSASSINATION GRANT MORRISON YOU FUCK YOU SET TALIA BACK SO FUCKING FAR#I also decided to outline their WORST traits because I already know what I like about these characters/their best traits.#most people do. But what was a greater challenge was finding what would make their lives and those of others worse.#what would I hate about this person if I knew them IRL? What would I first suggest they get therapy for? What hurts them and why?#I found these questions really interesting in the context of this AU where some people are forced into completely different roles#the says/thinks/is was inspired by trying to answer that question for myself. I say my worst trait is my impulsiveness but when#I asked others in my life they answered 'oh so you said your weird thing where you don't ask for help right?'

when i insist on odysseus as a rape victim i'm not trying to absolve him of patriarchy. he is, in many ways, a hero of patriarchy. even if i think some of the people who use him that way rhetorically have probably not read the odyssey, let alone understood its nuances, the cultural world of the poem and the narrative itself are patriarchal, and odysseus is both a product and perpetrator of that. but when i read about calypso forcing odysseus to have sex with her, i will still call it rape, not because i like him as a character, although i do, but because i think to not do so reveals a very troubling attitude toward rape and patriarchy in the ancient context and now.
i've tried and tried but i don't know how to have this conversation with someone who is determined not to accept the premise that, in the text of the odyssey, odysseus has no choice in the matter. if they've read the text, it's right there. from what i can read of the greek, it's there (ἀνάγκη, force, constraint). i've never read a translation where it wasn't there. if they just don't care, that pretty much kills the discussion.* but sometimes they'll try to sidestep it, bringing up that the text implies he slept with calypso willingly at some point, or arguing that she doesn't explicitly compel him on the last night they spend together before he leaves ogygia forever.** to be frank, that's not the point. i'm not trying to absolve him even of the accusation of cheating on penelope. i'm not saying he was faithful to penelope. i'm saying he was still, at the point that we meet him in the odyssey, raped. period. i'm saying that's important in some way. i'm saying that using that word is important.
odysseus has power, as a man in a patriarchal society, but that power is not absolute. power is never absolute. i've heard it suggested that in the ancient context, the rape of odysseus is comic, in the sense of affirming life even in its indignities, and in the sense that humiliation is amusing (i have a lot of disagreements with the article, but it has given me endless food for thought). i'm quoting at length here, but bear with me:
Athena leaves Odysseus lingering on Calypso’s island in what is certainly the most unheroic, most challenging of all the trials that befall him on his return home. The narrator describes Odysseus as desperately wanting to leave Ogygia, crying in homesickness, but having to stay and, more to the point, share Calypso’s bed. I mentioned much earlier that an audience of that period would not expect celibacy from a married male away from home. Yet the situation must produce, it seems to me, quite another reaction in the males in the audience when the narrator emphasizes Odysseus’ profound unhappiness with the arrangements. In a patriarchal society of that time, where marriages were arranged and wedding nights were more likely than not sanctioned rape scenes, households teemed with female slaves, the highways and byways with prostitutes, men were no doubt accustomed from puberty to have their way easily with women, and on their own terms. Nothing in their experience would prepare them for enforced sexual servitude to a woman. [...] With this episode, the narrator has introduced a comic counterpart to the ubiquitous comments on the faithful Penelope’s celibacy, that is, the image of her husband manfully performing his nightly duties in the home of the insatiable Calypso. It is comic, yes, but also every man’s deepest fear.
why is it comic? because it's a reversal of expectation, of roles, of fortune. why is it unexpected? because it exploits the fear that a man could be treated by a woman the way he treats a woman; because a woman becomes monstrous by acting like a man. these are misogynistic ideas and fears, and they sound strikingly modern.
which means that: i understand the impulse to salvage calypso's image. i understand how it could be interesting or productive or empowering maybe, for some women, because homer is so concerned with any fault in penelope's sex life (reinforced by clytemnestra’s, and those of the slave women that odysseus and penelope own) and seemingly not at all with odysseus’. but calypso is arguing for the right of female gods to treat human beings however they want to, not for the rights of human women.
it also means that: the rape of odysseus becomes remarkable, when the rape of countless others is not, because of who he is. it's humiliating for him to be treated like a sex slave because he's a man and a king; other slaves are just slaves. similar logic is found elsewhere in the odyssey (it's humiliating for him to be treated like a beggar, but the other beggar in the house is just a beggar). this is not a text that believes in equal rights of any kind. but i think we have to ask the question, is it not rape because of that? should we not call it rape because he's a man, because he's a man who perpetrates specific evils, because other people have it worse? and why do i keep arguing that his situation is important to remark on?
god. i don't know. sometimes? just because we don't.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've lost count of posts like this, comments like this, attitudes like this, of how many times i mention the odyssey and immediately hear about calypso, of how at best odysseus weeping on ogygia becomes the butt of the joke. and i'm not sorry that i don't find it more progressive than treating calypso as a shrill misogynistic stereotype. i do not find it interesting or original to take a man who is not in the position of power in a sexual encounter and say that he's being either disingenuous, ungrateful, or mystifying.
when we refuse to name what calypso does to odysseus as rape, absolutely regardless of what we feel for him, just that it happened, that that's what's going on, i think we do something sinister, potentially to real people. especially because this exists in a text where slavery is also often unnamed in translation and discussion, and other forms of rape and captivity and human suffering, and i think we need to name them all, without being afraid that naming one will take away from the others. saying odysseus was raped doesn't mean we excuse the intense misogyny penelope is subjected to, the enslaved lives of melantho and the other hanged women. it all matters. it's all important.
*as does the suggestion that odysseus could be lying and actually had a great time. but odysseus isn't the one telling us what's going down on ogygia; the narrator is. when given the opportunity, odysseus himself says very little, only maintaining that his heart wasn't in it. of course odysseus could be lying. he could always be lying. but calypso is the most relevant counter-perspective we have, and even she doesn't claim that odysseus wants her, just that she thinks he ought to be happy with her. it's to her obvious frustration that he isn't. without another authority in the text, saying "it could be straight lies" is a conversational dead-end.
and if, by the way, there's a lost version of the odyssey in which odysseus was philandering, and the version we have was written to clear him of those charges... it's still the version we have. how we deal with it says something about us.
**if i say "calypso raped odysseus" and a hypothetical person (actually several real people i have encountered) makes this counterargument, that implies that the threat of force is, then, what? not real? if 'at some point' being willing means that the harm of whatever came after that point is negated, it casts him as someone who mopes around out of boredom with an equal partner, when the text seems much clearer on the point that he's in this position against his will than under what circumstances and for how long he might have slept with her willingly. they are clearly not equals by the mere fact that she is a goddess; his mortality is, in calypso's eyes, the barrier between them. rip to everyone who finds the decision to leave ogygia a "surprising choice" but i am never less surprised by odysseus than when he's handling calypso as delicately as possible, in order to leave her as fast as he can.

i love your art! i’m just beginning to get into your fics and am loving your writing too. i am in awe of your many talents 💛 was wondering what comics you recommend for new-ish readers? i’ve read a couple batman&batfam books but want to know where to go next. what’s the good stuff, you know?
ahh hello!!! ty kindly hehehehe. if ur just starting out and want to focus on batman specific books thee most accessible and cohesive list to begin with would be batman year one > long halloween > dark victory > robin and batman > robin year one > batgirl year one. this will get u super familiar with the earlier players — bruce, alfred, dick, babs, and the rogues. some of the comics are worse or better than others but they’re also the most likely finds at a comic shop!!
after that it’s all about figuring out what character you gravitate towards. u can look at big events like no man’s land, knightfall, and bruce wayne murderer/fugitive, or team books like justice league international, new teen titans, and young justice. other batbooks id recommend would be a lonely place of dying (tims intro), batgirl 2000 (cass’s solo), gotham knights and the batman chronicles (particularly oracle year one), and worlds finest: teen titans (the new og teen titans book). robin son of batman is a great book for damian, and we are robin and batman and the signal are great intros to duke thomas if ur after something more recent.
that can be overwhelming tho! if ur after some light hearted comics that cover a broad range of characters tiny titans and lil gotham are also excellent — and can introduce u to the wider universe! a lot of new readers start with under the red hood or red robin 2009 which are like…. among the worst points of introduction. they rely on a lot of context for pre existing canon, and rr specifically is not reflective of the rest of tims comic run.
some of my other personal favourites are impulse 1995, black mirror, wonder woman historia, and gates of gotham. there’s so many great and innovative comics out there!! please don’t be afraid of how deep the water looks before u jump!!!!!!!

hey hey! i love bbts so much, it makes me so happy whenever i reread it✌️one of the (many) things i love about it is the core four friendship! so i was wondering, do you have any recs for fics with fun yj dynamics?! no pressure ofc, either way i hope you have a lovely day ☺️✨
hello! so sorry this took forever! also so glad bbts makes you happy on the reread 🥰
first, some of my absolute fav core four content: coralreefskim's comics and cryptocism's comics. great art, great dialogue, great codependent friendship nightmare polycule genuinely endearing "would kill for you would live for you would save the world with you but more importantly would never let you live down that typo you made in the groupchat that one time" vibes all around.
and a few fics:
Into the Brighter Night by shoalsea
when a past enemy comes back for tim, the batfam learn a lot about tim and his young justice adventures in the fallout. this one's long and plotty and has that super compelling trope of the POV character watching an interaction where the reader is in on the jokes but the POV character isn't--basically a great sort-of-outsider POV on the core four, plus, from what i could tell, almost every other yj character at some point.
a study by bernard dowd by cv_angels
a short, hilarious fic with timber and implied future timberkon, in which tim (sort of) reveals his identity and that leads to kon and bart and cassie meeting bernard.
Lipstick on the glass by kerosceene
i'm a broken record with this one, but it's just. 🤌🤌 it starts out focused on timkon but part 2 has college-age core four halloween shenanigans. cassie has a civilian gf. bart dresses up as a meme that doesn't exist yet. kon is in the dragriculture club. tim loves his friends (and boyfriend) so much. it's just so heartwarming and good.
The Mystery of the Superboy Shirts by Aviatricks
silly oneshot with tim going full obsessive detective mode about everything but his own feelings, good yj squad dynamics, bart being a passable liar, and some timkon.
Detours by miyaji_08
i've also rec'd this one before (twice, even) but once again it fits the bill, because the core four scenes in this are so good. it's a reverse robins au where tim becomes roommates with kon and bart and cassie, who are superboy, impulse, and wonder girl but have no idea (yet) that tim has his own secret identity, too. so there's identity shenanigans with all four of them, classic reverse robins tim angst, some enemies-to-lovers and oh-my-god-they-were-roommates timkon, and a really fun final action sequence. it's part 2 of a series and i highly recommend reading part 1 first, but if you want to dive right into the core four aspects you can probably piece together the context as you go.

Hey! I am very intrigued by the frequency fic but i have almost absolutely no idea about anything regarding inertia and impulse lore. Do you recommend i read anything before jumping into frequency or can i just jump in without knowing anything? Thank you! (Your art is (beyond) awesome so i cant wait to read your stuff too 😭😭😭) (also sorry if this is already asked before 😭😭😭)
no worries!!! ive gotten a few comments from folks who say they don't know anything about Impulse but are having a blast regardless, plus my 2 readers i know irl have no interest in comics whatsoever and yet have read every chapter. so i THINK it's definitely possible to go in blind and infer based on context? but there might be some confusion
my recommendation for minimum reading would be Thad's introduction in Impulse (1995), spanning from issue #51-53, and the Mercury Falling arc: issues #62-66. Frequency is kind of a continuation to Mercury Falling, and most of the references are found in those 5 issues.
There's also plenty of bits throughout Frequency that reference other comics, and I do my best to list them in the Author's Notes when they come up so that anyone who wants to can read em to get the context.
Also if you want to go the extra mile and become an expert on Inertia Lore I made a list of all of Thad/Inertia's comic appearances to date, but it might help to peruse a few wiki's to get an idea of the state of the DC timeline and its crisis events if you're not already familiar. One nice thing about Thad/Inertia being a very minor character in canon is that you could feasibly read through all of his comic appearances in a couple days.
However! I'm pretty sure a full deep dive isn't necessary to reading Frequency, and you can probably get a lot out of just the Impulse issues.

So I'll admit I'm a little sad that we didn't get as many wholesome moments between the bros this season, last time it felt like there was a more even balance between them arguing and being nice to each other
But I also can't help but feel like this might've been on purpose for the sake of an arc, which I can say more confidently now that we have the full context leading up to the pitchfork episode (which you can read my earlier thoughts on here)
Looking through the list again, in the first batch there's not actually a lot of episodes where the specific point of tension between the bros is centered on Cuphead's impulsiveness, whereas the second batch has three episodes with that theme in a row, and another one directly before the finale. This is definitely a trait of his they want us taking note of this time around.
So, Cuphead is getting more reckless. Why? My guess is that it's to cope with the fact that he no longer has the protective sweater - and potentially the ambiguous amount of time he spent in jail
If there's one thing we know about Cuphead, it's that denial and distractions are his bread and butter when it comes to dealing with his problems. We heard more this season than ever about how he's totally not worried about stuff, which I think is sometimes genuine but, y'know. Where else have we heard that phrase
Tumblr media
The truth is that Cuphead is very worried about things. He worries about losing his soul and his family, to the point where it was (and possibly still is) a recurring nightmare for him. We already knew he was pushing down these fears, but I feel like he might be doing that more than ever. My evidence? His treatment of Mugman.
Now, most of their interactions are pretty par for the course; they were already prone to bickering, so that isn't weird by itself. But where's the supportive Cuphead who spoke up for Mugman when he got stage fright, who tried to make him feel better about ghosts, who did his best to help when Mugman's handle broke? There wasn't much of that this season, but we sure did get a lot of the two splitting up over a fight.
All of this comes into play with Lost in the Woods, where Cuphead's unrelenting rocket launches in the face of increasing danger read to me like he's stubbornly sticking to a distraction so he doesn't have to think about that danger. Even when that distraction ends up actively making things worse
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then he and Mugman split up again, when they're out in the wilderness and have no idea how to get back home. Again, in a vacuum this doesn't seem unusual for them, but combined with the repeated instances this season of this happening due to Cuphead specifically (Jailbroken, Another Brother), it's starting to feel like Cuphead is pushing Mugman away on purpose, or at least subconsciously.
And the worst part? I think it's working.
Mugman is rightfully intolerant of Cuphead's shenanigans, and gets comically angry at them, but it's not hard to tell that he's been hurt by them, too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the recent trend in Cuphead's behavior, I can't help but feel like when he tells the Devil that there's "nothing he can take away from him that he cares about," there's grounds for Mugman to believe him.
Which makes me all the more concerned about Mugman now that he's been captured by the Devil, because what's he going to do in that situation if he's not totally convinced that Cuphead is going to save him?
Tumblr media
Honestly he'd probably start running the place if his experience in prison is any indication
Anyway my point is that they might very well be setting up some character development in part 3, and that the odd shift in the bros' dynamic this season was all part of the setup phase

MORE MACSUMMER I BEG
I GOT YOU ANON!!!! Here's an assortment of MORE silly goofy headcanons about my favorite silly goofy couple <3
These bitches are COMPETITIVE!! Anything can be a race or a bet between them, to the detriment of EVERYONE else. A friendly rivalry over who between them can bring in the most for the camp isn't enough, they're also betting on whether or not Sean'll eat that fisheye Pearson just discarded, or whether Lenny can shotgun a can of soup before Sean counts to 20. A lot of their less-destructive dares are food-consumption-related, yes, how did you know?
They’ve almost broken their legs and arms several times over with the racing, though. They’ve been scruffed by Arthur about just as many times.
Yes, Lenny is a morosexual. Yes, being around Sean debuffs his impulse control. Part of the fun is that they’re always egging eachother on!!
Meanwhile Sean’s type is very much ‘down to earth, smart, with a fun streak’ and Lenny checks all the boxes. He likes the push-and-pull Lenny offers, as someone who’s unafraid to call Sean on his BS while also going along on the more lighthearted stuff.
(Granted, ‘lighthearted’ in this context may or may not include robbery and arson!)
The inside jokes are neverending; Sean can, like, hold up a spoon and waggle his eyebrows and that'll mean something that has Lenny in hysterics.
Sean might not be that inclined towards reading for himself, but he LOVES listening to Lenny's voice, and will often ask Lenny to read aloud. It doesn't matter if it's a news article, a children's story, or the driest factual book on the face of the planet; if Lenny is reading it to him, Sean will remember what he hears up until the moment he starts dozing off. If Lenny quits too early, Sean will wake right back up and demand he continues until he starts dozing again.
They’ve been stuck in that loop for hours before, but the clue is to let Sean fall asleep properly before Lenny can rest his voice - he’s a lot more willing to do this when he realizes it’s one of the only surefire ways for Sean to NOT have a nightmare <3
They are SO “We aren’t joined at the hip!!” *is actually joined at the hip* core, to me. Lenny will be like ‘I can go on this job on my own!😤’ and then come back and beeline towards Sean to tell him how it went.
You know that one comic that’s like “I gotta pee” “Ok” and then they walk away hand in hand? Literally. They don’t even realize this is what they’re like!
They’re VERY good at keeping arguments or fights private; the gang only notices because those are the only times they’re not constantly around each other, beyond camp/gang duties. The fights never last long, and are never that serious - they're usually good and back to normal within a day or so.
Their most public fights are the ones they have when they’re drunk, and they only really consist of them fussing over each other. “Did you have any water, Len? I’ll grab you some water.” “Are you cold, Sean? Here, take this blanket” <- They’re both slurring, wobbling, and can’t see straight. The second one of them stands, the other is yelling at them to sit down bcz they’ll break a leg after two steps, so nothing actually gets done or fetched, unless it’s within arms reach (and that's usually more liquor). It’s a whole thing; they’re both of the mind that ‘No! You shouldn’t take care of me, you’re drunk, I’m taking care of YOU!’ and SURPRISE it’s like another competition where they can't let the other win. See Lenny grabbing Sean by the ankle while Sean's trying to drag himself towards the water canteen, and now they're yelling and wrestling in the dirt over it. It’s stupid but entertaining for anyone witnessing them, if nothing else <3
Sean has a tendency to get lost, and Lenny is usually the one who ends up looking for/finding him. Sometimes it’s not even that Sean is lost, just distracted, and Lenny will join him in whatever misadventure he’s found himself on. Other times that distraction means Lenny finding him in like a field 30 minutes from camp, and promptly laughing his ass off bcz Sean is high in a tree after pissing off a bull or smth.

Hey so I'm interested in writing for bartkon week, but I like doing frankly excessive research on characters before I try writing them...and honestly I don't really want to read all of SB94, impulse and YJ just to get a handle on what I'm doing, that's a lot even for me. I know some general stuff about the both of them, but not to the point where I'm like "Ah yes, I understand the soul of the matter" So I was wondering if there were like any specific arcs or points of characterization that I could read through to get the dynamic right?
shfkjdsfd ngl, I'm the worst person to ask bc my romance with BartKon didn't even start with BartKon....... it started with Clark/Bart from Smallville 😭😭😭 I'm exceptionally weak for Kryptonian/Speedster romances, but whereas Clark/Bart was the gateway, Bart/Kon is where my heart resides. And I don't ship any other Kryptonians with Speedster. Literally just Clart from Smallville and BartKon from the comics. Just giving you context so you don't think I'm some subject matter expert with a phd in BartKononomics ...... I am just a lady in her thirties who has carboard boxes full of sb/imp/yj singles cuz Clart made her Feel Things when she was a kid and she decided to Do Something about it (aka read comics).
BUT TO YOUR QUESTIONS!
If you want a high level overview of the ship, @radioactive-earthshine's KonBart Manifesto is a great place to start. It has the ship's Best Highlights, and really sums up why there is a small but dedicated fanbase to it. Dedicated enough that I broke my near-ten year cold turkey of mainline DC comics because my main man Bendis put BartKon back on the map while I was living my life blissfully unaware that DC had even hired Bendis to begin with and that the Diamond distro monopoly died. I was shocked. Still am. Two things I never thought would happen in my lifetime.
Now to understand the soul of Bart and Kon.... you're gonna have to look at that things that don't really have Bart and Kon on the same page. Part of the reason why BartKon Speaks to Me is because their relationship progression over the year directly ties back to their individual growth as characters.
So reading material 1: In Impulse, Bart starts off as the speedster equivalent of a feral bobcat, but slowly progresses into an empathetic, understanding, and an overall Good Man. Much of his story deals with the harsh realities of simply growing up different. Running theme of Imp fandom is that Mark Waid created and wrote an autist with ADHD without meaning too, and by Allah he sure did. It's fascinating because Bart harbors both grief and rage due to his predicaments, and the adults in his life are incredibly unkind (even if they are well-meaning), so Impulse has always been, in my understanding, the slice-of-life that really helps Bart to come of age into a Man and a Great Hero. You don't have to read the whole series, but if you can read at least the first twenty or so issues, you'll find yourself rooting for the little man and see how he shines in terms of empathy, understanding, love, and dealing with unresolved rage/grief/loss.
Reading material 2: Superboy is a trick and a half because it deals with issues of child neglect, grooming, the allegory of child star exploitation, and so on and so forth. The BartKon implications are There, but the reason why Superboy is incredibly important is because Superboy as a character is more than just his parentage. Contrary to popular belief, Geoff is NOT the main man in this story. Reading even just the first twenty issues of Superboy will show you Kon was failed by most of the adults in his life, and Superman is NOT his villain. Or the root of his daddy issues. Bro didn't even have a name until much later. If you wanna know who Superboy REALLY was before the Geoffian Era, you can read the first twenty odd issues. If you wanna go earlier, you could read his parts in Reign of the Supermen, just to get an understanding as to why he HAD to be the way he was during this time.
Reading material 3: I do not recommend reading all of YJ 98 for the BartKon bc YJ 98 is hijinks fun. It's GREAT reading for absurdist and comical situations, but only really works with context from Impulse and Superboy to get to the BartKon heart of it all. Not to say YJ 98 wouldn't give you the BartKon goodness, it sure does, but the soul doesn't come together if you don't get how Bart evolved in Impulse and how terribly Kon was treated in Superboy. You can read really anything in YJ to have fun with the group, but if you wanna fast track, you can read the last twenty or so issues and Titans/Young Justice Graduation Day.
Reading material 4: The Geoffian era..... I wouldn't wish Teen Titans 2003 on my worse enemy. Funniest thing is that at the time, I was just starting to watch Smallville. In love with Smallville!Bart already, I embarked on my Superboy journey.... had mixed feelings, so I stuck mostly to the 90's content. Ended up reading impulse a decade later, but long story short.... the Geoffian Era set a Tone and Direction for Bart and Kon that never sit well with me. There IS story there, if you are interested in reading about Daddy Issues, Masculine Identity, and a shit ton of other stuff that really pulled Kon away from his roots and made him more of a Emotionally Tortured Super. If that floats your boat, you may enjoy it. You can read a handful of comics from this era. Just know that in the end, he suffers anyway, just in an ugly ass outfit. The only real bit I'd recommend forreal forreal is when he dies. His whole arc in the Geoffian Era really just tells us he doesn't know how to live and thus he... dies. It's sad bc the writers before him despite having tortured Kon relentlessly, never really made him so...... hopeless.
Reading material 5: Flashpoint.... Bart dies, but I personally did not feel much for him because Bart didn't feel like Bart in the end, but yeah, he kicks it. This is where I pretty much kicked DC to the side too, minus the mistake that was reading RHATO. You can read Kid Flash Lost if you'd like.
Do not read New 52.
Reading material 6:.... my main man Bendis. No you do not have to read all of YJ 2019, but BartKon reunion and then Bart's explication as to WHY he found Kon is all you need. Bendis, despite the hate he gets, actually shows that he has great love for the YJ line. BartKon especially. The bald headed demon proves yet again that he care not for the world, only for his faves, which I'm cool with bc BartKon are me faves.
I know. A lotta reading. Those numbers I gave you.... you can also just read half of what I said kjdhgkhd Googling also helps! I know it's not always feasible to read so many comics, and I'mma be real, the Tone for many may not entice you either. Impulse feels like a slice-of-life to me, but YJ's an absurd shounen, and Superboy is the saddest book you'll ever read that is absolutely hilarious when you can accept that 90's writers just Did Not Care. Geoff hates Bart and Kon. New 52 is not real. Bendis actually loves BartKon a LOT, so you can just read their tidbits and find peace in the fact that Bart Allen, the loneliest fucker in existence, found his Kon El, who is the saddest fucker in existence. Something something, I will find you even if God wants us both dead. And God (editorial) did. I don't know how Bendis pulled the shit that he did, but he put a decades old rarepair back on the map after the Geoffian Reign. And Geoff hates Bart and Kon.
Happy Reading/Googling/Researching!!!!

Hiii can I ask what ur Hermitcraft headcannons areee
This ended up wayyyy longer than anticipated so here we go
This is a pretty open request so I’m just gonna list random headcanons. I’m also assuming you meant agere so thats what I’m going to do here.
Who I headcanon as a regressor kinda changes depending on what I’m writing, for example in my short fic Hanging Stars, Zed doesn’t know Tango regresses until s9, but I typically imagine they both regress and have known for a while.
I think Tango regresses from 3-5 normally, and at that age is quite active and excitable, he can’t sit still and prefers to run around rather than sit. The one exception is watching cartoons, he will be glued to the screen and can easily watch for hours, so he needs someone around to keep him from wasting the whole day staring at a screen. Occasionally though he will regress younger, more like 1-2, typically when he is tired. in that case he is more nervous and would rather sleep cuddled up with his caregivers than go on adventures.
As I covered in a different post (Here) Zed is a baby regressor, I already talked about it in that post.
In the context where most of the server is open about their regression I think Grian always builds a huge room in his base as a play room for the littles! It has tons of toys, a cozy blanket nest for naps, and a little kitchen always stocked with easy snacks!
In s7 Joe’s dog catcher business actually involved him putting a bunch of dog stuffies around the shopping district, after all of that he gave one to every hermit, little or not.
Grian has the biggest collection of stuffed animals ever seen. Most are birds, but he has many others including a toy sheriff from empires, a cod, several cats including a Jellie from Scar, a stuffed corgi from Joe, and a llama (Scar has a matching one)
Keralis is a flip I haven’t really thought about how he’d be when little, he is the best babysitter when hes big
He would always use cute nicknames with whoever hes caring for eg: baby, little one, some cute play on their name
Always making sure that his little is safe, constantly telling them to be careful so they don’t get hurt
Loves making his littles laugh, he makes lots of silly jokes, his favorite being to pretend he doesn’t know something suuuper obvious, so the little can tell him the answer while giggling at how silly he is
Grian loves trains when hes little, he has a play mat with super detailed roads and houses on it that he likes to play trains on.
Pearl’s favorite thing to do when little is play pretend, she isn’t super used to having a cg I think so she probably prefers to go on adventures and get into trouble with her stuffed animals!
I think Impulse is a cg for both Team ZITS and the Soup Group, Zed and Tango care for each other if they aren’t little themselves, as do Gem and Pearl
When Tango and Zed are both little Tango loves to be Zed’s big brother, but he’s frequently too loud for Zed and accidentally scares him, so Impulse always has to keep a close eye on him.
I think Joe and Etho both regress but its not super obvious when they do, as they are both older regressors (Joe 8-9, Etho 12-13). The main signs that Joe is little is that he doesn’t use as complex of vocabulary, and he is more energetic. Etho spends most of his time alone when he’s regressed, typically either drawing or watching anime and reading manga or comics.
also thank you so much for asking! I love talking about my agere hcs sooo much!

Ok so hussie that SUCKS ass so much and he always came off to me from what he showed in his comics as a weirdo in so many ways. But like I never feel like i see this brought up whenever I talk about homestucks more questionable parts and I don't like that very much. U seem to talk about it a lot and I think that's good so I think it would be interesting to hear your honest unfiltered thoughts on the guy and everything that he's done
Ohh, boy. This is a doozy. Yeah, this is something I have a lot to say about… I try not to talk about Hussie too much, since they’re a bit of an upsetting topic, and I just don’t really like discussing real people, but… There comes a point where you literally have to acknowledge the Author when analyzing the Work. Sometimes, Death of the Author isn’t applicable in the way you hope it is, and sometimes, The Curtains Are Blue for a Reason.
That being said… Let’s get into this. I’m gonna be including a few links in this one, so here’s to hoping that it doesn’t break the post, and that it remains visible in tags. It’s an important discussion to have.
Content Warning: In-Depth Discussion of Racism, Mentions of Ableism and Child Predation.
Despite the fact that I prefer to analyze Homestuck from a largely Watsonian perspective, since Hussie isn’t very fun to think about, I cannot, in good faith, ignore it 24/7. In order to really be able to understand certain parts of Homestuck, you need to have some iota of cultural, racial, and sociopolitical awareness. This isn’t me saying “You need a high IQ in order to be able to understand Homestuck,” this is me saying there are certain parts of the story that are caked in stereotypes that a lot of Non-POC, especially Non-Black people, might not pick up on. Same goes for the Able-Bodied.
Hussie has proven themself time and time again to be a raging racist who is really, really weird about kids. Her writing is a double-edged sword- on one hand, Childhood, and the loss of it, is rendered beautifully in Homestuck in ways I haven’t quite been able to find in other media. The fearlessness and shamelessness in allowing the characters the make horrible mistakes and be flawed people as they grow up in harsh circumstances is an incredible thing to witness… But then there’s Hussie’s disturbing infatuation with Vriska Serket, who is a 13 year old girl, and his unabashed hatred for characters like Tavros Nitram, who is physically disabled, as well as Gamzee Makara, who is Black-Coded in a way that’s offensive.
Hussie’s bigotry is transparent. Let me use Gamzee in particular to expand upon this topic, because he’s… A pretty obvious choice when it comes to this discussion.
Gamzee Makara is a Dirty, Drug-Addled, Hedonistic, Unsupervised Mess of a child who has an Absent Father, Horrifically Violent Impulses, and a religious devotion to a Hip Hop/Rap band. While it’s undeniable that, from a Watsonian Perspective, Insane Clown Posse is a legitimate basis for a real, in-universe Cult, it’s also undeniable that- in tandem with the rest of his character- that obsessive devotion to those specific genres does not read well, as they’re historically Black music genres, and Black men are stereotyped as having a particular affinity for it. I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge how Gamzee’s character is largely treated as a joke, with him mostly being portrayed as significantly more stupid, bumbling, and useless than his peers- to the point where it’s a remarked upon thing in the text of the story- and that this, when taking in the context of the racism behind the rest of his character writing… Reads as a Minstrel Show.
This doesn’t even touch on the concept of “Chucklevoodoos” within the comic, which has its name derived from a real world, currently practiced, legitimate African Religion. It’s most often quite offensively boiled down to mysterious, spooky, magical nonsense, and as something that’s simultaneously unknowable (to white people,) all powerful, and primitive /lesser (than Abrahamic Religion.) The presence of “Jujus” as a set of mysterious, extremely powerful objects within the game of SBURB raises some red flags in conjunction with the rest of the things I’ve listed as well- it wouldn’t read nearly as poorly without the previously aforementioned extreme racism, and with said racism in mind, I can’t help but think that it also being associated with the Makaras while also being borrowed, once again, from African Religious Practices, was intentional. Don’t get me started on Kurloz.
(Wikipedia may not be the most detailed source ever, but it serves its purpose to prove that this is an actual thing, and I’m not just talking out of my ass here.)
It’s disheartening, but unsurprising, to see a fandom that seems to pride itself on a sense of Acceptance, Awareness, and Diversity be unable to grapple with the fact that the creator, and the source material they’re working with, is inherently bigoted. Pointing out that the Racism and Ableism in Homestuck exists is not at all something people should shit the bed about, and it’s not a conversation put on the table purely to tell people to stop liking Homestuck; Critical Enjoyment of media does exist, and you can be aware that a piece of work has some deep, deep issues and still enjoy it. I would know- I’m literally an Alpha Troll-centric blog.
Shifting gears here, but Hussie’s ableism is well known- ranging from things as obvious as early Homestuck’s liberal usage of the R-Slur, (though that was quite normalized online during the period in which it was used, and I’d argue that that’s partially a product of its time,) Tavros’s horrible treatment due to his disability being something that was supposed to be viewed as “deserved,” Tavros’s disability as being something that needed to be “cured,” and Terezi’s Pseudo-Blindness, to things as obscure as the way Hussie handled Horuss Zahhak’s canonical Systemhood.
Also, though it’s not in the vein of bigotry, I need to expand upon an earlier point… Hussie’s obsessive, unabashed attraction to Vriska Serket, who is a 13 year old girl, is a significantly more openly discussed topic, I feel, but I’ll go over it still. Andrew Hussie has what is functionally just a Self Insert within the comic, bearing their name and their- at the time- exact image. This Avatar of himself even shares the role of being the Writer of Homestuck, and the line between what is an actual reflection of Real World Hussie and what is just a character is extremely thin, and extremely blurred. That said, a decent portion of people took Hussie’s Avatar as near purely a character- but his attraction to Vriska was a genuine thing. Hussie’s Avatar takes every opportunity he can get to physically stalk Vriska, and sexually harass her. The stark age gap between the two of them is, if I recall correctly, remarked upon in the comic, and Vriska’s disgust and discomfort is seemingly supposed to be a part of the joke.
There’s a lot I could talk about here, but I’m not currently equipped enough time, mental and emotional energy, space, or words to tackle everything cleanly in one post. The start of the web is there, the foundation is built, but I can’t adequately weave it all in a single day. I hope you understand. There’s quite obviously more to be said, about Meenah’s use of AAVE, Damara’s aggressive over-sexualization paired with her speech patterns, the running theme of Child Predation, so on and so forth. A lot of my thoughts on Hussie aren’t kind. They really aren’t a good person, no matter how much any of us wish they were.

Do you have any recs to start reading more of impulse? Ive got the 98 yj run but Im not sure where to go from there.
Oh easy, the Impulse series. It's incredible. It is one of the best comic runs of all time.
The Flash #92-112 is also great. That's his first appearance and the formation of the 90's Flash family. (Also the rest of the Mark Waid Flash run heavily features Bart as well and is very good for Flash fam content)
I'm going to be honest here. You could read Bart's TT run. I wouldn't. But you could. I'd suggest maybe just reading TT#2-4 for context and then dipping.
Uh, Infinite Crisis #6 for sure.
I'd recommend avoiding Bart's Flash run (it's very bad) but All Flash #1 is a must read. Then if you really want to see Bart come back that would be Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds #6.
Then Flash Rebirth (the mini series), the Road to Flashpoint series (#8 to the end) and the Kid Flash Lost mini.
Technically Bart comes back at the end of Flash War but it's only really expanded upon in The Flash Annual (2019).
Now technically the next thing Bart is in is the Bendis Young Justice run. I would read issue #16 and skip the rest personally.
Then it's Joshua Williamson's Finish Line Flash arc, followed by Death Metal: Speed Metal.
Finishing it off would be the Tim Drake Pride special and Dark Crisis: Young Justice (not a great series imo but Bart is fantastic in it).
This one isn't out yet but I wouldn't miss Bart's return to the Flash series in One Minute War. It's going to be good.
I know this sounds like a lot but there are 90 issues in the Impulse run, 20 Flash issues (but you can read more, Waid's run is great for Bart content), and 36 additional assorted issues that I'm recommending. 146 issues total is actually pretty tame for a comic reading list ngl. But again, read or don't read what you want to. It's all good 👍

On Kinnporsche, humour and the fragmentation of the self
A lot of people have found jarring the tonal shifts in Kinnporsche and have found the comedic moments out of context.
I would like to put forward the notion that what Kinnporsche is really asking us to see for the most part in those scenes is the humour and not the comedy.
A little preface, I am using these terms based on the meaning given by Italian writer Luigi Pirandello in his essay "On humour".
He defines comedy as the "perception of the opposite", what we find funny at first glance, the first layer of interpretation; humour is instead the "feeling of the opposite", when we dig under and understand the deeper reasons for why a character is acting in that peculiar way. (You can find at the end of this post his example, it is the best way to understand what I mean)
This requires an effort in the part of the audience to use their empathy and critical analysis to perceive the reality underneath the surface and functions in highlitghing the contrast between what is perceived at first and the underlying reasons. It should leave the audience feeling a sour taste in their mouths.
Pirandello proposes that "comedy and its opposite lie in the same disposition of feeling"; this means that comedy and tragedy are the two faces of the same coin.
Porsche is the one of the characters who is often portrayed in this kind of humouristic way. The most glaring examples are
- the whole episode 2 sheningans
- the whole fear of ghosts in episode 8
- the seduction scene in episode 9
- the boyfriend reveal/the bodyguard replacement in episode 11
All these scenes are used for laughs if we interpret them at face value, but if we delve deeper in the narrative these are the moments where Porsche is feeling insecure, where his feelings are obfuscated and not really clear even to him.
These are all moments that if we, the audience, exercise our empathy we can pass from the perception of the opposite(the comedy) to the feeling of the opposite(the humour) and the contrast that is created is bittersweet and disorienting
What the audience needs to do is shift their stance in regards to the scene/the character, this way they will find that while it’s the comedy that conceals it is the humour that reveals (if you look deep enough to get to humour)
Because we already have the knowledge of the character, it is our responsibility to use empathy and perceive the underlying reasons beyond it
We should really move beyond the superficial impulse to laugh because, if the character has the required depth(here I would argue Porsche has it), and we use our critical analysis(that does depend on the individual), we will begin to see what a narrative that is essentially smoke and mirrors is hiding.
Also, and I know this will test the unfortunate souls who are still reading this post but bear with me a little more. Pirandello's conclusion in his essay is that what humour reveals is the fragmentation of the self. And again, I would argue that this is Porsche's case. Porsche's whole self is fragmented because he has lost his sense of self identity and he has not yet regained it.
Right now who is Porsche really? Is he the brother? The boyfriend? The bodyguard? The lover? How does he think of himself? Has he made peace with what he has become? How is he perceived by others? Does everyone see him as he is or as what they want him to be?
The answer to these questions remains yet to be seen, and so the only way forward is humour for him.
“I see an old lady whose hair is dyed and completely smeared with some kind of horrible ointment; she is all made-up in a clumsy and awkward fashion and is all dolled-up like a young girl. I begin to laugh; I perceive that she is the opposite of what a respectable old lady should be. Now I could stop here at this initial and superficial comic reaction: the comic consists precisely of this perception of the opposite. But if, at this point, reflection intervenes to suggest that perhaps this old lady finds no pleasure in dressing up like an exotic parrot, and that perhaps she is distressed by it and does it only because she pitifully deceives herself into believing that, by making herself up like that and by concealing her wrinkles and gray hair, she may be able to hold the love of her much younger husband–if reflection comes to suggest all this, then I can no longer laugh at her as I did at first, exactly because the inner working of reflection has made me go beyond, or rather enter deeper into, the initial stage of awareness: from the beginning perception of the opposite, reflection has made me shift to a feeling of the opposite. And herein lies the precise difference between the comic and humoristic.”

ok bet analyze the scene where draxum drops leo off a roof
HELL YEAH
Okay this scene in particular isn't actually that serious, most of it is just a joke BUT it does reveal some stuff about their characters. (I mean it IS the first time Raph makes a bigger copy of himself)
First of all, basic context. In season one especially, these guys are basically just getting into Situations. They're trying to be heroes and like they're not really losing, but they're definitely not winning most of the time. Like they aren't actually aware of a lot of what is going on. Not that it's their fault. They have no reason to know about the mystic armor, they lack information on Draxum, and the Hidden City is new to them.
That being said, all of their ideas of what being a hero is come from movies they've watched. Most of the criminals they fight are at looney tunes level of hijinks, which only encourages that action hero movie-like approach to these battles for them. Most of the time this is just a silly little detail but it's not until more serious episodes like the finales and the movie where they're forced to confront how serious fights they get into can get. (And, y'know, that they can be life or death)
So Raph saying "These villains are all talk" when Draxum threatens Leo? Yeah, this poor guy is not yet aware of the severity of what all of them are getting into.
Out of all of the brothers, Leo is definitely the most grounded in reality. He can read people very well and really assess a situation for what it is (most of the time), so of course, he can probably tell Draxum isn't bluffing. Because at this point, Draxum hasn't bluffed at all. He's a very straightforward and direct guy who has made it abundantly clear where his goals lie and what he is willing to do to accomplish them. Therefore, if he says he will drop him off a roof, then he will drop him off a roof.
So Leo isn't surprised by Draxum dropping him, but Raph is. And ofc Leo is gonna be petty about it because he's Leo.
The more serious aspect of this scene is Raph's reaction. The moment Leo is dropped, he abandons the oozequitos in favor of diving for him. Family is more important to him afterall. At this point, Raph doesn't know exactly how his mystic powers could work so like if you want to get REAL serious and dig super deep into the scene then probably necessary; Raph is willing to die for his brothers (yippee?? that has implications huh)
But at first, he just punches down to grab the ground and pulls himself down faster than Leo is falling in order to catch him. (ADDITIONAL NOTE: he is impulsive, Leo had to comically flail out of the crossfire because my guy almost punched his brother INTO the ground. help.) But instead, since his core motivation as a character is to keep his family safe, his mystic powers react to his fear/want to protect Leo and manifest stronger than they have before so that he's able to catch Leo safely without putting himself in harm's way as well. So um.. we call that a win I think.
Also when Draxum says "Awww, brotherly loyalty" he rolls his eyes. There's nothing significant about this he's just an asshole and it's really funny to me.
I do think this scene also gives an interesting insight into how Draxum views the turtles as well. He really does see them as weapons. In future episodes, you can also see he values them having some semblance of will and autonomy when it comes to their decisions. So despite seeing them as weapons that he made in his image to work for him, he does still acknowledge they are their own people to a degree. Although, if they choose not to align with him, the consequence for them making that opposing choice is to take them out himself, so it's not exactly unconditional respect to their autonomy as sentient creatures, but um.. it's something?? He gets the "not as evil as he could've been award" idk

I want to read the dc comics, but I have no idea where to start. Which one do I read first?
I gave recs for what I started over here and they’re mainly what I started with so you can understand what I draw, but here are some more :) when I first started reading comics I went for shorter ones but as you read you get exposed to characters and you’re like “I wanna read more of them” and then it all spirals from there. I think it helped me get used to reading comic bullshit lol. I only started reading this year so there’s a lot I haven’t read out there.
1. Supersons 2016 (very cute and more lighthearted, three series, finished so it’s about 30 ish issues in total i think, Damian Wayne/Robin and Jonathan Kent/Superboy are the sons of Batman and Superman and they get into shenanigans and have a cute friendship. I really like these ones😊)
Tumblr media
2. Young Justice 1998 (older so dunno if you wanna start with it, but it’s fun and wacky and I love it, 55 issues plus some crossover/tie in issues so probably like 60 ish issues, features Tim drake/robin, superboy/Conner kent, impulse/Bart Allen, wonder girl/Cassandra sandsmark, greta Hayes/secret, arrowette/cissie king jones, plus more like empress/anita fite, slobo, and red tornado.)
Tumblr media
3. Graduation day (mini comic that is 2 or 3 issues about breaking up yj and the titans smh smh) then the core four (Tim, Bart, kon, cassie) join the teen titans
Teen titans 2003 (grittier and edgier than yj but has it’s nice character moments here n there, about 100 issues, but I’m not gonna lie if Conner isn’t in the issue I kinda zoned out or skimmed it ummm >_>)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Batman urban legends. ( ongoing, anthology of several stories and characters, good if you wanna meet a lot of Gotham based characters. This was like my first legit exposure to dc comics specifically so I’m putting it here)
Tumblr media
5. World’s Finest 2022 (ongoing, Um I think there’s 5 or 6 issues out rn. It’s revisiting Batman, Robin (Dick grayson), and Superman’s first years together and it’s reallyyyyy cooooooool. I love the vibes and art. Feels very authentically comic book-y. Dan mora is my favorite dc artist Honestly . Lots of others show up too like Supergirl and Doom Patrol 😊Actually this is Probably my fave out of the new comics)
Tumblr media
6. Batgirls 2022 (ongoing but there’s like 9 issues out I think??, features Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, and Barbara Gordon, who have all held the mantle of batgirl. Also the art slaps.)
Tumblr media
7. Batgirl 2000 (70 issues, about Cassandra cain’s run as batgirl, I haven’t finished it but Its like a really lauded run and is well written so go read it)
Tumblr media
8. Batgirl 2009 (26 issues I think, this is about Stephanie brown’s run as batgirl, she is my beloved I love her so much and her jokes are so😖💜)
Tumblr media
9. Red Robin 2009 (26 issues I think?, runs parallel to Batgirl 2009 and Batman and Robin 2009, I put this one last bc I feel like it needs a Lot of context unlike the others where you can just jump into it but it is short and It was also one of my first comics so 🧍🏻‍♀️. Basically Tim drake had a solo run (Robin 1993) but it’s over 100 issues and I haven’t even read all of em bc there’s. So much. So if u wanna read more tim drake stuff I’d suggest looking up a reading list bc he debuts in the Detective Comics issues and then gets his own solo. Anywaysss so basically a lot of shit happened lots of friends n family died or “died” leaving Tim in a pretty bad place. Bruce is assumed dead, so Dick becomes Batman and makes Damian his Robin, and Tim takes up the Red Robin mantle. okay actually you can easily pick up the context when u read so nvm😗✌️)
Tumblr media
I was gonna put more but I’m on mobile and hit the photo limit ☹️ Kon and Bart have their solos, I started reading The New Teen Titans from the 80s, Damian has a recent robin run, and I’m planning on reading more supergirl/superfam comics and green lantern corps comics so yeaaaaah there’s a loooooot. Hopefully something here piqued your interest and I didn’t overwhelm you.

I'm pushing you to talk about what you wanted to say in the last post as I enjoy reading your thoughts, so..... And actually, for me also, the similarities between Jay and Lois may speak to the fact that he will be a canon Jon couple and in the future, let's pray he gets his own comic as well as Lois. And I don't know if you're versed in Damian and Flatline's pairing, but she's somewhat similar to Talia, actually. Well, that's just my guesses and thoughts
Definitely! Flatline in particular has a lot in common with Talia, especially her new connection with Ra's. oOoOOooh ghooOOoOooosts
Okay, as for what I said in my last post: "There’s a side rant in the above about how what defines a character trait is not its existence but rather in what contexts the trait manifests, but that’s a different post I invite somebody to ask me about." I've talked about before in previous analysis, characters aren't just characters. Right, so, Jay's not just a guy, Jon's not just a guy, they exist in the narrative. They serve purpose in the narrative as a vehicle for story, which conveys shit like themes and ideas and what not. So like, for a basic example, Gatsby from The Great Gatsby. He's not just a guy who exists, he exists within the context of a story of a wealthy guy who is deeply unhappy and ends the story DEAD, which conveys the THEMES of yknow, how american capitalism sucks and wealth and class and decaying moral values yadda yadda that book was really gay for whatever reason So if you grant this to be true, which it is because there's been decades of literary study on this principle of fiction writing lol, then a character trait isn't just a character trait. It exists within the context of how it manifests in the story and how it adds to the narrative. Right?
Which makes sense, because if you're like me (autistic) and you've ever looked at a list of character traits to give your OC or whatever, you've probably gotten frustrated at how vague they all are. Like. "Quick to anger" Okay, at what, what makes them get angry fast? "Ambitious" In general or is there something specific they want? WHAT DO YOU MEAN???? Well, people, like you and me, we contain multitudes. We may be one thing in one situation, and another thing in another situation. This is also true of characters.
And this is true of Jay and Lois, too. They respond very differently to the same things, and the same way to different things. Because they're different characters, and they have different roles in the story. Different people, even if they may have shared traits.
I think, actually, Jon is a great example of this. Mainly, he has the same 'general' traits now as a young adult as he did when he was a kid, but because they manifest in different ways, it makes him feel like he's grown up. Like, he's still quick to anger, a bit brash and impulsive, BUT THE CONTEXTS IN WHICH THAT HAS TRUE HAS CHANGED! He's no longer getting angry at being told no he can't do something, he's thinking his way through fights and situations which used to be VERY untrue, he's not throwing hands with Damian anymore, BUT he's doing reckless shit like GETTING ARRESTED ON A WHIM and KIDNAPPING A U.S AMBASSADOR AND DRAGGING HIM INTO THE SKY because his anger now manifests primarily in situations of injustice.... which makes total sense considering he's now an abuse survivor. What contexts makes those traits come out in him have changed!
This principle coincidentally is kind of why I generally recommend, when you're discussing media with ANYONE, you should be a bit weary if they don't discuss the PLOT of what you're discussing at all and how it may impact a character. Because that shit matters, and neglecting it impacts your understanding!

This is all your fault @upswings but I have now read the main plot of DC One Million for your poll and I am TORN.
Like this is an incredibly silly unnecessary story, Solaris the Tyrant Sun is a ridiculous concept, but a whole lot of characters are having good character storytime in it! Well, basically everyone NOT in the 853rd century is having a good time. The future folk are having a miserable one.
(Dick! Babs! Helena! Roy and Garth hanging out with Jesse and Linda! Barda! Ted! J’onn!)
On the other hand DC has a terrible habit of just blowing up cities for drama (Poor Montevideo. I don’t think I’ve ever seen further references to this explosion unlike Qurac or Blüdhaven)
I liked the bit where Ted was just exhausted going “I had to give Firestorm a physics lesson about what he needed to do with the radiation, dunno how much stuck”. Yes! Ted Kord is a clever scientist!
Actually I’m slightly astonished how many of the characters in this I can put into context as apparently I’m now at the stage of “oh yeah the Linear Men, they’re involved with Rip Hunter!” for background characters in JLA based events. Who knew?
Also I keep giggling as Vandal Savage is punching Roy out and I'm sitting here going 'poor Roy, always getting beaten up by family members'.
Okay, having worked through most of the tie-ins, I can recommend the following as actually worth reading:-
The actual main 4 event titles are surprisingly amusing
JLA
Impulse
Nightwing
Detective Comics
Superman: Man of Steel and Superman aren't TOO bad
Aquaman and Wonder Woman have the best future stories of the 6.
Martian Manhunter will make you cry (as the only one successfully using the conceit for truly good storytelling)
