The way the christmas lights twinkled around the window frame offered Edward the smallest semblance of festive cheer. Usually, the holidays only served to remind him of everything he had never had. But this year, he did have something. He had you. And that was really getting him into the spirit of things.

With his palms clutching the window sill, he carefully eased himself up slightly, looking over the edge of the frame and into your bedroom. He watched you carry the presents you had bee wrapping and hide them in your closet, sighing in pathetic melancholy and wishing they were for him. He could pretend though, and the daydream waarmed him, even as he crouched in the freezing cold.

It was enough to have him humming Christmas songs to himself, finding himself in a good enough mood to recite the ones they were allowed to sing in the choir for fun, when he was young and still hopeful.

"He's making a list, checking it twice..."

Eddie hummed dreamily, eyes widening as you removed the sweatpants you were wearing and stepped around the room in your underwear. He was glad that he took the time out of his busy schedule to spend time with you.

"Gonna find out who's naughty or nice..."

His research into the corruption within the GCPD, the interconnecting web between those in charge, those elected, those employed, those who wormed their way in, had only shown him that there was so much more to this. So much evil beneath the surface. But you were the beacon of hope he clung to. This act, banal, perhaps, in comparison to the important work he usually did at night, his own brand of vigilantism, reminded him of why he sought out the bad. It was to protect the good.

The naughty and the nice.

He smiled, only briefly, before catching himself in his lovesick stupor and ducking as you passed by the window on your way into bed. As he watched you he considered how terrifying it must be, for all of the people who weren't him or the Batman. He had been scared before, but now he knew how to fix it. An eventually, he might find the confidence to let you in on that little secret, but for now, standing watch while you slept comfortably would be enough.

"He sees you when you're sleeping..."

Eddie could spend all night out here. He didn't mind the rain. He was sheltered by the overhang of the roof, alone with his thoughts, time to reflect as he stayed by your side.

"He knows when you're awake..."

And once you were awake, he would leave without a trace and get back home for some rest before spending the rest of his weekend dutifully giving himself to the cause.

"He knows if you've been bad or good..."

A thought lingered in the back of his mind though, gnawing away at him like his rats' teeth against the bars of their cages. Chewing at the happiness he felt.

Who were those gifts for?

Who did you love?

And why wasn't it him?

a/n : i apologize for how shitty was the other one, i literally write these in one night, and i am rn in a school trip of 5 days. i do not condone or romanticize any of this behaviour.

it had been a bad idea to try to outwit the riddler, in his own lair of secrets, it was written in stone that he would find you.

now you were again in the punishment room, a locked dark room that you were kept in when you misbehaved against edwards's criteria, which normally depended on how he got out of bed. the cold atmosphere of the room made you shiver, what would edward do? this was your first attempt of escape. what kind of punishments would his twisted mind come up with?

as you pondered about your past and your possibly future, you only lifted your head slightly as the door opened, and the monster's shadow extended on the floor.

he looked royally pissed,

but he didn't say anything, all he did was come in with some food and place it on the floor

"eat it."

you quickly grabbed the bowl and began to eat, but weirdly, there weren't any utensils, so you began to chug the soup down but before the liquid even touched your tongue the beast screeched.

"no! you're not supposed to eat it like that, you mutt!" you quickly stopped, scared of the consequences "eat it like you deserve it, like a worthless dog"

your eyes widened, he wanted you to eat it off the floor? you tried to speak but you were cut off with a slapping sound, and a stinging pain in your cheek, he had slapped you.

"eat it off the floor you worthless mutt!"

the words...the slap, everything was too much, as you tried to eat the soup, but the blows kept coming, some even punching you into the soup until your face was soaked in the dense liquid. your face felt bruised, every punch felt even worst each time.

when you managed to finish the soup, or when the soup was all over your face and on the floor, he stopped, and stared at you, fuming rage clouded his vision to the point where you couldn't gaze into them, he scoffed and nudged your face with his boot, making you look at him

"try to fucking run away again, i'll break your legs"

it was not a threat.

it was a fucking promise.

you began trembling and trying to back away but not managing because of the tight chain on your ankle.

"behave you worthless mutt." and with that, he turned around and closed the door.

it had been a few days since he took you out of the punishment room, he made you sit on the floor, right next to his chair, where his greasy and dirty hand toyed with your hair mindlessly, dirtying it. even though he had taken you out of your isolation, it was still a punishment every day.

bathtime? spray you down with a hose.

sleeping? on the dark squeaking floor.

eating? like a damn dog on the floor devouring a cold, unsavoury soup.

he kept you as a pet, and he was a bad owner.

right now you were in deep sleep, shuddering on the cold floor, your side was bruising

against it, until you felt a calloused hand wrap around your arm and hoisted you up.

"huh?" you groaned but got no response as you were dragged to the bed, you were fully awake when you laid, you tried to get up, only for a lanky dirty arm to pull you down to the bed again, you were about to panic

"sleep you worm" he growled and all you could do was lay down next to him, it was uncomfortable how he was spooning you, feeling his chest against your back as he hugged you as if you were a teddy bear.

"Hmm, you'll never leave me will you?" he chuckles "you need me" it was a sleepy mumble but it iced you to the core, and that's how you understood

you were never leaving.

Is Secrets in the Dark good? Yeah. I really really liked it.

Does it work as an Unburied spin-off? Not really? I mean besides the voice cast and the exposition, no. The only moments it feels like it are Barbara's feelings towards Flass.

I just can't really accept it as being in the same universe in my mind. Maybe close paralel realities but that is it. Because between them making a show focused on Ed and not adressing the lovely can of worms that was Unburied Riddler dealing with the deterioration of his mental health and what it meant for him specially when he himself was uncertain if he had something or not and his skill at manipulating made the psych evals useless but he couldn't just be honest because he doesn't even know what honesty is and making Bruce be way less caring and not really advanced in the process of being better to others and to himself and being so so kind but unsure of how to show it was also a waste. And like even without his main struggle in Unburied, this Riddler feels like Unburied Riddler (and Hasan continues being the best Riddler cast ever, he has the carisma and the inteligence and the deliveries are top kiss and I still adore how he delivers the riddles specially because now his perfomance even added the fact that the delivery changes when he is doing it to himself as a self-soothing act and when he is presenting it to others i love him), Bruce doesn't, Colman had no chance of avoiding being casted as worse than Winston because he just has a less complex, less the perfect Batman charactherization to work with, his Batman is okay where Winston's was great andhe does a great job with what he had but what he had is not that great compared to his predecessor (both as vas are really good, I love them, but Winston was great with a great characther and that matters). I just think I would like it more as it's own universe. And so since DC can't control my brain that's how I see it. Again we could just interpret the differences as different P.O.V characthers as well but the fact the characther development loose ends of everyone but a little bit Barbara's are never solved I can't.

I do however wonder if in case a new spin-off or even a sequence occurs it will be more Secrets in The Dark or more Unburied? Or will it be a secret thrid new thing?

My fave series! And in DC universe form!, And liked to share on mc being kidnapped by a villain and I liked to think mc have a gremlin side and might scared said villain of what they think and asking them if anything is real, or if they are real and not a fictional imagination of some being that will one day wake up and for all of them to no longer existing

And what's more to add in a cherry that they called out each of them their real names and telling them of what they are afraid and back stories to lead them to the way they are if they won't let them go home and give her ice cream before Batman gets them

She's the new Wayne kid all the rogues are going to try and take her as leverage or ransom. (Maybe some get attach and try to adopt her too?) It's just how Gotham is, if you haven't been kidnapped once you aren't a true Gothamite.

The reaction each rogue has is varying depending how public their information is. Like everyone knows what happened with Harley, where as no one is positive who the Joker is outside of the Joker.

So if their information/backstory is well known they can play it off as a case of a kid trying to be scary just to take control of the situation. Well the smart ones anyway.

If that information *isn't* public or better yet recorded at all this chills them to the bone. Warning don't do it with Scarecrow; it's tempting I know to give *him* a crisis but instead he'd get sure fixated on you. You presence brings a tingle up *his* spine and he loves it.

The Riddler is pretty quick to assure himself with the multiverse theory so you being from one where their a comic isn't impossible; it doesn't make him any less real. But now he wants to know *everything* you know. And if you don't know as much as you seemed to? That's okay he's still gunna keep his new stupid sister/daughter. You had a growing mind he can still lift that IQ. (Unless you like helicopter parents who homeschool energy with extra crazy and homework run)

The ones who don't have public stories and are kinda on the dumber side of things have big breakdown. Most of them rather subdued while they sort this out. A few get violent because they refuse to think your saying the truth and want to know where you got that information. This category is the more likely to just out you out in an alley and run because "not today demon child".

I am insane for your tma x dc headcanons! I have to ask, do you think any of the other dc characters are entity aligned? Heres a few hcs i had:

The Scarecrow: honestly might be an avatar touched by all the fears like Jonathan Sims. Probably like Sims, he started researching the fears and Scarecrow became obsessed w them. If i had to go with a single entity, i would say he is Dark/Corruption/Eye alligned

The Riddler: Eye or Spiral alligned

The Joker: slaughter or corruption (the angst if Jason shared an entity w his murderer!)

Poison Ivy: Extinction?

Harley Quinn: hunt or stranger aligned? She was hunting down the cure for Jokers issues, but he wasnt who she thought he was and she became the prey

Killer Croc: Flesh babey!

Two face: maybe another slaughter?

Okay, so in my opinion plenty of characters have been touched by various Entities or even marked by them in ways that can motivate them without fully being Avatars or aligning themselves with those Entities. Like, Scarecrow just screams to me of someone who was touched by the Spiral (and is probably in real danger of becoming an Avatar,) but he’s holding on to his own sense of rationality as hard as he can and trying to make Fear make scientific sense. Someone who would walk out of an impossible corridor, and spend weeks measuring the outside of the building trying to find where the hell that corridor was supposed to fit, before sending someone else in to see if they experienced the same thing, only to become fixated on the differences… Not saying that’s what happened, but Jonathan Crane had some kind of experience with the embodiment of Unreality itself, and he definitely feeds it regularly.

(Harley, likewise, seems more like a victim of the Spiral, Corruption, or Stranger than anything else. Oh, she’s still a supervillain/anti-hero depending on the day, but her origin story is of her mind being broken by the Joker’s abuse. That is either depressingly mundane, or being chewed up & spat out by one of those three Entities.)

I hadn’t thought much about most of the villains, but I am 100% with you on Ivy being an Avatar of the Extinction, and I can definitely see Croc as an Avatar of the Flesh. I’d throw in Hugo Strange as probably being at least aligned with the Spiral, and Pyg has definitely at the very least been marked by either the Spiral or Flesh (though I don’t know him well enough to say if he’s a full-blown Avatar or not.) If you only saw my first post, I also decided Talia & Ra’s are both aligned with the Web, though Talia values her own freedom enough I don’t think she’s a full Avatar. They’re the ones who helped Bruce find the Mother’s embrace. Damian was supposed to be a Web Avatar as well, but he’s just a little too desperate for love when nobody’s looking; his swarm is silk worms & moths, and he does manage to fake it for a while. If Joker’s an Avatar, it would either be the Stranger, Spiral or Slaughter, in my opinion, but I always like when experts of every kind take time to study Joker and are like, “Yeah, IDK WTF is going on with that guy, but I hate it.”

(Jason is an Avatar of the Desolation in my version, because the Slaughter is about the violence on as large a scale as possible while the Desolation is about the very personal aftermath. The Slaughter is War, where the Desolation is something taking out your entire life in one single night and leaving you behind to deal with it. Jason absolutely wants his targets to be scared of what will happen, what he’ll do to them, but in a “destroy everything you’ve ever worked for & drive away everyone you ever cared about” sort of way; not a “blow up an entire city block for no reason” sort of way. And given how much Jason cares about protecting innocents, he’s actually partially starving himself by not following through on complete Desolation the way people like Jude Perry do. Imagine if The Archivist (around s3) tore out the last page of a statement & threw it away without glancing at it before he started reading. That’s basically what Jason’s doing to himself.)

Some people in the DC universe, though, are just Like That(TM). Sure, it can be hard to tell supernatural trauma apart from genuine mental illness, but it’s still a superhero setting and some people are just little freaks (affectionate.)

Like, Oliver Queen? Just a little freak with a bow. Just a weirdo. Black Canary? Superpowers, but not of the Fear Entity induced kind. She’s just Like That(TM).

Speedsters? Oh honey, you better believe they’re all just Like That(TM). Anti-Avatars, if anything; those bastards basically became one with a potential aspect of the Vast and went “But what if I was just. Like. Nice about it? Or only mean in extremely specific, petty, personal ways? What if that?”

My main “outside of Gotham” thought is that Amazons are aware of the Entities. Primarily, they have to be very careful & monitor eachother for signs of potential influence of the Hunt, but they’re aware of others beyond it (though they might define the Entities along different lines thanks to cultural differences & all that; I don’t have any specifics, I just really like that headcanon that while certain fears are nearly universal, the way different cultures group & view them are going to be different. Like, if spiders are viewed as purely benevolent & good luck by the culture you were raised in, it’s very unlikely any capital-f Fear is going to have a spider motif. Smirke separated the Buried from the Vast, but aren’t they both primarily about being overwhelmed, about Too Much? At the bottom of the ocean, is there any difference? Why should other cultures draw that same line?) This created some tension with Batman at the start of the Justice League, as Diana knew even if he wasn’t lying when he swore to have the best intentions, Batman was still walking a razor’s edge; he could become a monster so very easily. On the other hand, it was a huge relief for Dick (who, again if you’ve only seen my first post, I’ve changed my mind on and decided he’s a Hunt Avatar) when he first met the other Titans and they all went over their powers, to have Donna realize what he was talking about and promise to stop him if he ever lost control. A promise she has actually had to follow through on a few times, when a villain got into their heads and pushed Dick too far; he sleeps better at night knowing Donna is both willing & able to wrestle him to the ground and keep him from hurting anyone, even when Dick’s gone full-feral.

he's not currently on my list, but if anyone has specific requests they can feel free to drop them in because it is my intention to consume every bit of riddler media i can get my filthy little hands on and what i've seen of him so far in clips and compilations and gifs i ADORE and i can keep the request in my drafts until i am ready to go with it 💜

also here's a list of the riddlers i write for in order of preference/how easy i find it to hack into their stinky minds

Arkham!Verse Eddie, Arkham Knight, then Arkham Asylum, then Arkham City, and then Arkham Origins, or just a generalised version of him.

Capullo/Zero Year Eddie my beloved, disgusting, horrible, cunt of a man <3

Reeves!Verse Eddie, although he's so overpopulated by the amazing Dano!Nation writers that I worry about my interpretation so much.

Batman Unburied Eddie. I have consumed all of his episodes multiple times and I don't ever really stop thinking about kissing him. He's an absolute joy to write for.

Gotham Riddler/Eddie. It's complicated, I am afraid of the Gotham fandom, I want them to welcome me but it's terrifying out there. I love Eddie more than I love his characterisation of the Riddler so there's a lot of overlap in how I approach him.

Young Justice Ed, whom I have headcanoned as a pathetic worm of a man, in desperate need of love and affection and a kiss on the forehead.

And then I have Telltale Riddler and TOWJAR Riddler, the new babies, who I am still working on little characterisations of before I delve into a full length fic of them 💚

Any other suggestions for the next Riddler to make it on my bang list are also welcome 💜

Got it!  OMG it’s so Rou!  Blue and green with alchemy flasks attached to the saddle and a teasure chest on the back with saddle bags?  So SO Roulette. Her aesthetic and the kinda crap she carries around!  What could be better for a Nether researching alchemist warlock? Perfect!

Included a picture of her default ground mount to show just how well the mind worm matches!

It’s time consuming but not hard to get at lvl 110!  Just takes some patience. So worth it.

New Mount get! Photo Instructions on where to get it here. Just click the pages left on the floor to get credit towards it, and do it before reset, because then you need to do it all over again apparently...according to the page I read, anyway.
