In another universe, there's a book titled something like The Merchants of Light set in my Starfall universe that follows a sprawling cast of characters from all social classes and explores the themes that arise when the people who gain their wealth by selling the light of the heavens live in a world of glittering opulence that drags them into the darkness of sin, while those who live in poverty cling to and nurture whatever light and goodness they can find in a dark world that tramples them into the dust.
This universe has always been largely a collection of small moments, small characters, intense aesthetic, and big themes, and that's always been a problem for storytelling, until the thought struck me today that that's what the story is. It could be the story of a society, and the ways that we all affect everyone else. Something more like a classic novel than a fantasy story, with a bunch of tiny little intertwining moments that serve as brushstrokes in a larger painting. I don't know what those moments are, or how to weave them into a coherent narrative, which is why it's only an imaginary book, but man, if I don't want to read it.

24 Books I want to Read in 2024
This is another post that should’ve made its way to you sooner rather than later. But it’s still the first month of the year, so I think I’m not too late in sharing with you all the 24 books I want to read in 2024. Please keep in mind that this is by no means an exhaustive list because I want to read a lot more than these 24 books. So without any further ado here’s a list of them. 
1. Thirteen Rising by Romina Russell
Not only do I love this series as a whole but I really want to know how it’ll end and this is the last book so I’ll finally know. 
2. The House of Hades by Rick Riordan 
Everybody loves books by Rick Riordan just like me so my goal—along with many others’—is to read all the books by him and it includes this one. 
3. The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larson 
The first book blew my mind and that’s why I’m eager to know what’ll happen next in the series. 
4. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
I’ve heard a lot about his book and I do love books by Leigh Bardugo so I’m eager to read this one.
5. White is for Magic by Laurie Faria Stolarz
It feels like forever since I read the first book in this series and I really want a chance to read the second book because this series is interesting. 
6. Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin
Every year I tell myself I’ll read this book and every year I don’t. But I want to change that this year and finally read it. 
7. Jade War by Fonda Lee
I read the first book and found it really heavy and kind of scary for myself. However, I do want to know what happens next and I hope I can do it. 
8. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao
I started reading this book but I just wasn’t able to give it proper attention and so I want to try again and read this book. 
9. Red Sister by Mark Lawrence
This is another book which deserves a better treatment than what I was initially giving it, so I hope I’m able to give it proper time and attention this time. 
10. Psychos by Sheridan Anne
I love the title of this book and that’s the main reason why I want to read this book, and I hope I enjoy it. 
11. Wyntertide by Andrew Caldecott
I read the first book and found it weird but intriguing and that kind of urged me to give the second book a chance. 
12. Scare Crow by Julie Hockley
I think I mainly want to read this because I want to make progress on the series and I’m certain I need to revise the content of book 1 before I do. 
13. Blood Infernal by James Rollins
This is the last book in this super interesting series and I’m eager to see how it all ends and what happens to the main characters. 
14. How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather
Since I love the first series I read by this author I’ve made it a mission to read all her books and that’s why I want to give this book a read. 
15. The Orphan of Cemetery Hill by Hester Fox
This is another author I aim to read every book of and this will be my second book from this author. I just love gothic stories. 
16. As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson
This is a pretty famous series and I’m eager to read the last book and finish it and I’m hearing a lot about how it’ll make you cry. So let’s see. 
17. A Portrait of Loyalty by Roseanna M. White
The first two books in this series are downright adorable and I know the third book would be as well, so I’m eager to read this book. 
18. Deadly Little Scandals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I’ve been trying to get to this book for a really long time and I just hope 2024 is the year and I can read it.
19. Break Us by Jennifer Brown 
This series is one my favorites and of course I’m looking forward to reading the last book and reaching the conclusion. 
20. Every Gift a Curse by Caroline O’Donoghue
The main theme of this series is what I love about it and that’s why I’m looking forward to reading the last book and finishing this series. 
21. Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong
The whole world in this series feels so real and unique at the same time that I can’t help but want to read this book.
22. The Shadow Cabinet by Juno Dawson 
Considering the crazy cliffhanger of the first book, it’s obvious I want to read this book the first chance I get. 
23. The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber
I don’t know about the female protagonist, but I love the Prince of Hearts and I want to know what happens to him in this book. 
24. Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
I loved the first series I read by this author and so I want to read all their books and that’s why I’m eager to get to this series.

On Set and Storms

I grew up in South Texas where we were used to hurricanes. To this day, one of the most magical things I’ve ever experienced is standing outside when the eye has passed over me. There is such raw power and majesty to storms. They are terrifying and destructive but can impart great wisdom. As a Kemetic, I find myself closer to Set during storms and actively attempt to listen. Hurricane Harvey was one of the most terrible to hit the Coastal Bend in decades. I prayed to Set in the eye of that storm, before we lost power and I learned what had happened to Houston. I stood outside with arms outstretched, honoring His Sekhem and the Majesty of His natural domain. Suddenly a gust of wind blew an updraft beneath me. I felt validated and listened to. I went back inside and we lost power soon after. The Texas grid didn't get restored for another eight days. I felt Set’s presence in the storm and in the aftermath, destructive and harsh… but encouraging. “You will survive this. You have survived much worse with far less at your disposal.” When I would talk about hurricanes this way people would quickly become upset. They fail to see how a hurricane can be anything but terrible and I beg to differ. Storms disrupt our lives but teach us that we can rebuild. In the moment of impact, are we happy with the destruction? Absolutely not. Loss teaches us what we are capable of living with, as well as what we can live without. Storms are the immune system of the Earth, their purpose being to restore equilibrium on a large scale. Set is the storm that rends the dead bark and branches off of the Holy Sycamore. He does the same for us. By stripping away the excessive and superfluous, Set brings us closer to our inner strength and core values. I’ve often heard Set being associated with the ego but, in my experience, He takes a very active part in facilitating ego death during the Dark Night of the Soul. I’ve experienced this several times and I can safely say when all other guides have stepped away, I am still blanketed in Set’s Presence. He stands nearby, as a silent but distant sentinel. His Presence is enough to let me know I will be okay. Storms have a way of mirroring the Shadow archetype, forcing us to face our demons. We might not know when they will begin or end, but we do know that they are temporary. That disruption is sometimes exactly what we need and the more we fight it, the more we resist the growth that might lead us to the best chapter in life we’ve ever had. Experience has shown me that we can survive far more than we give ourselves credit for. Sometimes you have to Embrace Life.

Reread: The Gate of Ivory, Two-Bit Heroes and Guilt-Edged Ivory by Doris Egan.
Total: Twelve novels (including two audiobooks), one graphic novel and one play.
Still reading: Sarah Morris Remembers by D.E. Stevenson.
My favourite: My Eyes Are Up Here has a funny and perceptive protagonist.
I’d also recommend: The One Month Boyfriend and The Bodyguard.
I wouldn’t recommend: The Hookup Equation or The Spitfire Girls.
Cover thoughts: The cover for My Eyes Are Up Here is clever and effective! Meanwhile The Agathas is attempting to be clever, showing both narrators by having one reflected in the other’s sunglasses, but the effect is a bit odd.

Some parts of ‘Frozen’ were inspired by Norwegian culture and architecture. Dusty Springfield recorded "You've Got A Friend" in early 1971 during the sessions for her third Atlantic Records album Faithful. Her recording predates that of James Taylor, but it was shelved until 1999 when it was included as a bonus track on the 1999 Deluxe Edition of her first Atlantic album, the critically acclaimed Dusty in Memphis (which contained four Carole King compositions). Midnight blue? Sunset orange?
Midnight blue: My first association woth that color will always be my Starfall universe. When I saw the cover for Roseanna M. White's Shadowed Loyalty, I instantly thought it was the most Starfall book cover I've ever seen. The book itself, with its heavy dark vs. light imagery, did turn out to fit in well with that Starfall vibe.
Sunset orange: The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis, because of the color of the cover of my version.

What I Read in February

I was so close to reaching my reading goal for this month but fell short of two books. However, I did read some really good books and managed to finish quite a few series on my list, so without further ado, here’s my reading wrap up for February. 
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco 
This is book 1 in the series of the same name and follows Audrey Rose Wadworth in Victorian England as she tries to apprentice in her uncle’s forensic laboratory while trying to maintain her life as a respectable woman in society. However, expectations soon takes a back seat when unexpected murders begin taking place with the victims losing vital organs and it’s up to Audrey to figure out who is the person behind the killing, all the while being careful not to get herself killed in the process. 
I’d been wanting to read this book for so long and I’m so glad I finally did and this book did not disappoint. Everything was so perfectly written and orchestrated that I couldn’t help but turn page after page until I reached the end. The plot twist really caught me off guard  and that’s just another evidence of the author’s talent. I definitely intend to continue with this series and can’t wait to read everything else written by this author. 
A Portrait of Loyalty by Roseanna M. White
This is book 3 in The Codebreakers series which is also the conclusion to the series and revolves around the lives of Zivon Marin who was one of Russia’s most prominent personalities but was forced to flee his country and take shelter in England as a cryptographer, along with Lily Blackwell who’s an expert with a camera to the point of playing a vital role in terms of homeland security. When circumstances throw them together, Zivon and Lily have no choice but to work together to uncover the truth while not only protecting themselves but their countries as well. 
I’ve loved every book in this series and this one was just as amazing and downright adorable. I loved Zivon from the beginning and as the story progressed he just made me fall harder and harder for him. Lily didn’t disappoint either and I loved her job. Now that I’ve finished reading this series, I can’t wait to start the next series by this author. 
As Good as Dead by Holly Jackson
This is book 3 of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series and is the conclusion to this series which follows Pip and Ravi as they take on one final case which is to help Pip more than anybody else. With trauma plaguing her, Pip needs something to save herself and this case seemed like the perfect thing to help her go back to normal. But as she tried to save herself, she doesn’t realize when she takes things too far and now she must pay the consequences. 
I have some serious thoughts about this book and I can’t believe whatever happened actually happened. I tried to deny and pretend that I didn’t just read what I read but I failed miserably. I never expected such a plot twist and such a pacing of the book but I did like the last line of the book and I’m glad I finally read this book and finished another series. 
Deadly Little Scandals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
This is book 2 in the Debutantes series and the conclusion of this series which continues with Swayer Taft and her three fellow debutantes as they try to uncover the million secrets their families are clearly buried in. Being forced into joining an exclusive debutantes society, Sawyer seizes the opportunity to find the answers she’s looking for, but she needs to make sure the secrets don’t kill her first. 
I have no words for the crazy in this book. And I really think I need to read this book again to truly make sense of everything that was in this book, because there was a lot. So many secrets and all twisting into one another with the past and present meshing into each other, this story is a salad of entertainment. I really want want some of the author’s talent into writing something so scandalous and deliciously messed up. And I can’t wait to target another series by this author. 
Evertrue by Brodi Ashton 
This is book 3 in the  Everneath series and the final book following the life of Nikki as she takes on the impossible task of destroying the Everneath with her boyfriend while searching for Cole who now owns her heart. With time against her and darkness gathering around her, Nikki has no choice but to see this to the end or die trying. 
I’m glad I finished this series because it was kind of starting to bore me, for the simple reason that I’ve outgrown it, at least that’s what I believe. The ending was sorrowful yet sweet but Nikki’s and Jack’s love seemed a little exaggerated and far-fetched considering how they’re in high school but it’s to be expected from YA romance. 
And this is my wrap up for February. I did read some pretty good books and I’m thinking which one to write a review on, and hopefully I’ll have it figured out before next week.
