Sunday Steve - Day Four
Things that would be new or unfamiliar to Steve in the 21st century, either due to the time period he grew up in, or his social-economic status and other such factors.
Day Four: Seat belt
I spent a long time pouring over sources muttering about seat belts to figure out if Steve would even be familiar with the concept.
The first seat belt was invented was invented in the 1800s to keep pilots attached to their paragliders. (Link)
While many people may be aware that seat belts didn't become mandatory in cars the States till around the 70s, I was surprised to learn that in the mid 1930’s "several U.S. physicians began testing lap belts and immediately saw their impact and began urging manufacturers to provide seat belts in all cars".
Of course. it wasn't till 1958 when the 3-point seat belt was invented. So if Steve ever did encounter a seat belt it likely was a lap belt with the buckle over the abdomen.
While some cars could have had seat belts in the 30s, it really wasn't common. This is compounded by the fact that consumers did not understand the danger of not having them and would ignore the seat belts or sometimes ask for them to be removed. New York was the first US state to have seat belt wearing laws in 1984.
Tumblr media
This is not to say Steve would be unfamiliar with safety belts as a whole. During the army he may have encountered them in aircraft and may have used them then.
But it's unlikely he ever encountered seat belts, or used them, before waking up in the 21st century. This also means Steve would be unfamiliar with retractable seat belts, locking retractors, 3-point seat belts, seat belt laws, all cars having seat belts, and seat belt safety culture.

ever since charles drove those two laps in Spain 2020 without a seatbelt, I think he's been too afraid of pascale and lorenzo killing him to not wear one. Like I'm sure full names were called, he probably even got grounded
Yeah, I'm sure he was scolded by his Mum and everyone in the Ferrari garage for that one!
Anyone not familiar with the incident, you can watch it unfold here:

Coffee Hour
Monday, 11/14/2022, National Seat Belt Day
I never go anywhere without my fastening my seatbelt. It is so automatic, I buckle up just moving cars around in my own driveway. I don’t do it because it’s the law, but because it really does save lives. That’s not a cliche; it’s a fact.

My Dad lived to be 90 because he was belted in one day when he was 70. Seat belts save lives, and I was happy to have him around another 20 years!

One step forward, two steps back.....
Tumblr media
What are the most common causes of car accidents?
"Distracted driving" , and a sense of safety causing drivers to drive less defensively.
Two of these safety additions to the automobile were the Rear View Mirror and the Seat Belt that actually caused MORE issues with driving because they took the drivers mind off watching the road ahead and lessened their defensive driving thinking they could survive any collision because they were wearing a seat belt.
While most of us tend to use these safety measures well, we have found a lot of human beings aren't all endowed with common sense, ...... that's for sure!
And because of these few lacking common sense the Automobile Insurance industry was born, to protect the stupid drivers and compensate those of us who were actually good drivers who were hit by stupid drivers as I have been 3 times so far.
As time went on the Automobile Insurance industry gained strength and lobbied to our government for MANDENTORY AUTO INSURANCE FOR ALL DRIVERS, and they passed that legislation without a vote of the people.
So today it's actually Illegal to drive without auto insurance.
When I first started driving there was no mandatory auto insurance law, because we mostly drove safe, and there was no need to protect stupid drivers because there wasn't all that many of them on the road.
Today that's ancient history because the number of bad drivers has quadrupled as people think "I HAVE AUTO INSURANCE, SO IT DON'T MATTER IF I DRIVE SAFE OR NOT".................. and then we threw in the cell phone technology to really screw up the safety of driving, and that's another story in itself, sheesh!

“I think it’s time to blow this scene. Get everybody and the stuff together. Okay, three, two, one, let’s jam.”
Goin’ out. Doin’ crimes. Makin them woolo- AHEM. Eddies. Gettin’ Paid. Science Fiction Bounty Hunting.
Given the cyberside of the plot in Cowboy Bebop, whose Yoko Kanno soundtrack with Seat Belts is entirely cool on its own, you cannot tell me that when you’ve got your loadout set, your motor humming and you’re about to set out at full speed to do some biz… How would this NOT get you pumped to do the thing right like a professional?
For those unfamiliar, and who among you isn’t, really? Cowboy Bebop is about a group of bounty hunters in their own ship hunting down criminals. Doing jobs to stay fed and keep flyin'. Each comes with their own tragic backstory, and somehow, this omnipresent gift for never catching a break. These five hard luck cases (EIN COUNTS.) in a semi-cyber-sci-fi-kung-fu-bounty-hunter-noir story? Sounds like CP77 to me.
For your edification, and again, I’m likely preaching to the flock here. This is a critically acclaimed anime series & full-length feature seemingly universally loved by its fans. It was also a streaming live-action series that was mostly panned by fans. The reason I kept hearing was that it was so much like the anime, why even make the effort to remake it in the first place? Pfeh... there's no pleasing some fandoms.
Honestly, I goddamn loved it. No accounting for taste, right? If this is in the category of "old school anime you’ve never seen" for some of you kids out there, fire this up, lean back and enjoy.* If you like CP77, you’re gonna like what you see.
BONUS: Here’s the opening credits for the live action. This was a self-evident labor of love that got unfairly mauled by butthurt negboys that said the show touched them in their bad places and then they had hurt fee-fees in their childhoods and needed the waaaaah-mbulance. Boo-fucking-hoo. I hate to see that happen to anyone who clearly put their heart into their work.

FOOTNOTE: Is a 25 year old anime considered old-school now? I haven’t kept up. Old school for me is Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers), Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Ninja Force Gatchaman (AKA: Battle of the Planets) I'm gettin' old myself. ^_^;;;

Key Takeaways
Many luxury automotive companies are working on sensors which could detect the position of the occupant by using brain waves. These sensors could also give information when the driver is about to make any sudden driving action like braking and turning. By using brain waves, the comfort of the occupant is enhanced by adjusting the seat according to the requirements of the occupant. The integration of health monitoring system in cars by developing seat sensor technology is improving its applications for diagnosing the health of the occupant. If the occupant has any sudden health issues like heart attack, panic attack, the sensors detects the occupants condition which are connected to cloud based internet services that will automatically send the information to any doctor nearby using diagnostic trouble code. To improve the safety of the backseat passenger, the introduction of belt bag, airbag, seat belt tensioners and inflatable seat belt system has captured the market. This model is used to reduce the strain that is normally placed on the ribcage during collision.

Occupant Classification System Market Drivers
Integration of Health Monitoring in Vehicles
The assimilation of health monitoring system in cars by evolving seat belt tension sensor technology is improving its applications for analyzing the health of the occupant. If the occupant has any sudden health issues like heart attack, panic attack, the sensors detects the occupants ailment which are linked to cloud based internet services that will spontaneously redirect the information to any healthcare or emergency facilities nearby. Collision detection and avoidance systems are on the radar of innovation for automotive manufacturers with Occupant Classification Systems being a vital element of such mechanisms.
Shift to a B2C Based approach
There are two ways the business is performed. In the B2B model, the system is sold to the Big market players in the motor vehicles segment for integration of the system with their vehicle from where the product reaches to the end user who are not the consumers in this model of business. This is the primary model currently used. However B2C or business to customer model, wherein the end user forms the consumer base as well, is witnessing significant adoption growth especially in plug in and battery electric vehicles. The supply chain is slightly different in the sense that the end product now, rather than going to a vehicle manufacturing for integration with their vehicle, the product is supplied to a retailer to sell it to the end user directly. This system has an added advantage that the latest technology can be accommodated to keep up the modified norms for driver safety system, thus driving aftermarket demand.

Move in a Little Closer
Move in a Little Closer
Back in the day, I remember my little boy standing up next to me as I drove our 1964 Chevy Impala. If I had to stop quickly, my arm would fling out like an albatross across him. That was the seat belt before there were seat belts. To this day, I still have that reaction when I’m driving. My passengers laugh when my arm reaches across them. Thank God for His protection to my little ones before…

Idk about Carlos, but in all these fan pictures I've always seen Charles with his seatbelt on, also when he was driving in Miami for the driver's parade I remember he was looking for a seatbelt but there wasn't any. But you're right about those vans/buses, they don't seem to have any seatbelts on. Maybe they just use them to move around the race track? I have to admit I used to be that person that didn't wear a seatbelt as a passenger in the back, maybe they're the same way 🙈
Yes, you are right - Charles does wear his seat belt a lot. I just get really annoyed when I do see him not wearing one. I think a lot of us tend to not put one on when we get into airport shuttle vans, busses, or cabs. But we should!
