Monday Metamorpheus infodump continues
Orpheus was founded in the late 19th century, around 1890, and this is also where the timeline and art and culture of the Metamorpheus universe starts to strongly diverge from our own universe (plus a lot of it is more sexually open and progressive due to metahuman influence) to the extent that none of the literature, music, films, etc are the same as ours.
(although there is a film studio called Morpheus Films that produces movies that are like feverdream filtered knock-offs of movies from our world. Morpheus Films is staffed mostly by eldritch metahumans who can remember details of movies/media from alternate universes and sometimes even agree on enough to cobble together a script and production of a film)
The reason why it starts diverging at that point is that although a small number of metahumans and metahuman artefacts existed throughout human history, it was limited for a long time by the factions not having enough power or attention to spare to influence goings-on on earth. Up until this point, all four of them (eldritch, fae, angelic and demonic) were engaged in a cosmic struggle against a fifth otherworldly faction or being that wanted to devour/destroy the earth and its inhabitants entirely and leave nothing behind.
The entities which make up the factions, being rather fond of humans even if they do ultimately wish to transform all of them into beings like themselves, were allied in fighting off this mystery threat. Once they won that battle, though, it was back to being rivals in trying to seduce and transform humanity. The original entities rarely interact with earth directly, preferring to create objects imbued with their power (artefacts) and influence individuals from afar (metahumans) to advance their goal.
All the factions feed off of/get energy from transforming humans and from their desires and from the desires that metahumans continue to have, without using that up. If they ever manage to transform all of the adult population of earth, they'll still get energy from the metahumans of their factions.
Nobody is particularly aware of it at this point in the story, but Metahumans can continue to transform somewhat according to their desires - if their desires change, so can their forms. Metahumans of different factions who are strongly involved with each other can gain traits from the other faction and even become hybrids over time. This is in contrast to the original entities, which have more fixed natures and forms.

When I was a kid, I regularly lost reading privileges for "having an attitude" and "acting out".
It wasn't as simple as being told not to read during other activities- one of the first times it happened, I remember being six years old, watching my stepfather pull fistfuls of books off my bookshelf and throw them to the floor in a heaping mess while I cried and asked him to stop.
It was weird. Every other adult I knew described me as exceptionally well-behaved, but at home, it was the opposite, and it was blamed on "learning bad habits from that shit you're reading".
Because I couldn't read at home, I spent all my free time at school in the library, reading with my friends.
When I grew up and moved away, I realized that my family life was toxic and abusive, and the "attitudes" I was being punished for were standing up for myself, standing up for my younger siblings, and resisting actual, real-life psychological abuse. Because I'd learned from what I'd read that my family wasn't normal, not like my parents said it was, and in my stories, the heroes were the people who spoke out when it was hard to.
It is insane to me that there are students right now who can't access books. It is insane that books are being outlawed. It is perverse that we are stealing away an entire generation's ability to contextualize their lives, to learn about the world around them, to develop critical thinking skills and express themselves and feel connected to the world or escape from it, whatever and whenever and however they need.
That is not how you raise a compassionate, thoughtful, powerful society.
That's how you process cattle.
It's fucking disgusting.

always amused me that peter lukas said martin carrying a knife would be very out of character for what he's heard about him in mag 108 when martin did canonically keep a knife on him for a while in s1. martin's so good at playing the 🥺 card that true facts about him simply slide off of people's brains.

You don't need a reason to distance yourself from people. If they give you bad vibes then you deserve to honor that gut feeling and protect yourself. Even if they're not doing anything wrong or bad or even if they haven't done anything to you. You can just straight up not like someone, no context necessary. That's valid af and there's not enough emphasis on intuition and gut feelings. Yes, absolutely. Listen to your instincts.

Buck and Tommy just got together and there are already hundreds and hundreds of posts in the 911 tags talking about how Buck and Tommy's "break up" will happen.
And it's fine, people are allowed to share their theories, I share mine as well, but I can't help but wonder what's the angle here?
From what I've seen, most people are sure Buck and Tommy are temporary because they're sure "Buddie is Endgame"? But how would they know?
As far as we know Buck and Eddie are best friends and there hasn't been any indication that the writers are planning for them to have à romantic relation in season 7. Reading interviews with shipping goggles on isn't canon, it's fan theory.
If they had planned it, they would have put some "seeds", some small hints here and there when Buck and Tommy got together, showing that Buck and Eddie's relationship is not meant to be seen platonic, like Buck being unsure about Tommy or Eddie being supportive but a little jealous.
But they haven't, all we've seen right now is Buck being head over heels for Tommy, telling his sister what he likes about him and telling Eddie how he can't stop thinking about Tommy. Buck has such a massive crush on Tommy he invited him to his sister's wedding.
Buck's coming out scene to Eddie was so beautiful and emotional, but there was no hint of Eddie being jealous or him having romantic feelings for Buck. We even got the sweetest and most platonic hug ever.
Where exactly are we supposed to get the message that Buck is harboring a secret crush for his best friend? Or are we supposed to imagine that he'll magically develop romantic feelings in the middle of the season?
I don't understand where the "Tommy is a placeholder for Eddie" theories are coming from???
Buck hurt Eddie to get Tommy's attention, his words not mine. How are the writers going to go from that and make us believe that he was in reality in love with Eddie? How would that go?
I have nothing against Buddie, I even like the idea of them, but at the end of the day, I believe what I see on screen. Fan theories are just theories.
I'm sorry but to me, Buck is all about Tommy.
As someone who has seen my fair share of TV shows, I'm wondering why anyone would think that that's the direction the screenwriters are going.

if trc was a visual medium and I was a tiktoker i would go insane talking about quiet luxury and how Declan and Adam both fall into this position of people with OBJECTIVELY less money compared to their peers and how both of them are trying to replicate luxury (ie: clothing=persona/identity) to varying levels of success. adam wears old gifts from the ganseys and declan is very clearly called out by other characters to be overcompensating. neither are fully seamless and even though thats not an overt plot point it is DEFINITELY very significant since plenty of their story beats echo each other down to their relationship with ronan, who is a different fashion debate (eg. how punk can you get off of a bank account you dont need to look at and a shaved head which needs to be constantly maintained and a BMW you stole w no repurcussion). again I DO think stief implies fascinating plot points that she doesn't focus on but her display of class and economic variation is very very cool & obviously people w more context of specific USAmerican culture can have this debate better than I can
editing to link the video that finally helped me put this thought into words

I feel like I should apologise that my Metamorpheus setting information posts are not sexy, most are just me thinking through how Orpheus actually even works as an organisation
Anyway here's some information about the colour associations for the different factions (plus Orpheus)
Eldritch has green (and to some extent black because, latex and eldritch goop) Fae has purple Angelic has gold (and white) Demonic has red (and sometimes black)
Orpheus has blue plus silver accents
The metahuman faction colours aren't a hard rule, since metahumans do whatever they want, but angelic metahumans tend to stick more strongly to the white and gold aesthetic, and demonic metahumans are more likely to enjoy an edgy look. Hybrid metahumans mix the associated colours or throw the palette out the window altogether.
Orpheus has blue plus silver details in the uniform for agents, and it's encouraged to wear blue and silver but not actually a rule for researchers and admin staff.
Almost all members of Orpheus wear a lyre shaped lapel pin of some sort. The lyre pin would be silver, and so are tie pins, but ties and uniform elements would be blue generally. Orpheus field agents look fairly non-descript in a uniform of white shirt, blue tie, and black or very dark blue trousers/skirt and jacket.

PRINTING WITH WOOD TYPE!
Every semester, when we finally get to the invention of letterpress printing in Europe in my History of Books & Printing course, we all head over to a local print shop to set type and print a collaborative broadside. Last week we did just that and went over to Adam Beadel's Team Nerd Letterpress in the Walker's Point neighborhood of Milwaukee.
Usually, we compose in metal type, as that is what the students just learned about, but Adam recently received a huge influx of foundry type that wasn't set up yet, so we had to use wood type instead. Even though we wouldn't learn about the invention of production wood type for a few weeks, we were game because wood type is the best!
Each student was assigned to come up with a 3-5-word phrase based on the theme of "Transitions." They set their own phrase in wood type, I arranged the phrases into an exquisite corpse poem, we locked up the type on the bed of a poster press, and pulled a proof in blue ink (second to last image). Everyone was satisfied with the results, and with only a couple of adjustments, the students went on a tear, inking up the type in a rainbow of colors (last image), and pulling 15 more prints. Everyone went home exhausted and happy.
There are few things more thrilling than making your own letterpress prints. Thanks Adam!!!

that one line about ramy's bangla being rudimentary made me absolutely sob (i'm bengali) and i wanna talk about why
there's so much to it both contextually with ramy's character as well as historically. contextually because ramy is fluent in 6 languages, an insane number of languages for one person but none of which are his mother tongue. he's described as a performer, one who knows he can't blend in so instead he stands out as a means to escape as much of the racism as he can. he gets lost in it that he almost forgets who he is; this is reflected in his language ability too – he gets so lost in his linguistic academics he just barely remembers the native language of his home place that he adores.
and honestly, you can't even really blame ramy for it at all when it was induced. it's the british who saw urdu, arabic and persian as more valuable than bangla, it's the british that make ramy put on this act so he can literally stay alive. and when you know the historical relevancies between urdu and bangla, it hurts so much that ramy was forced to forget bangla
very brief history context: after the partition, where british india was split into india, pakistan and east pakistan (now bangladesh) bangla was seen as inferior to urdu due to its hindu connections. bengalis experienced so much shit because of this (and bengali muslims are still dealing with the internalised cultural racism today honestly). pakistanis tried to make the official language urdu, even though literally everyone in east pakistan were bengali and spoke bangla, so bengalis fought back against it. we still celebrate that day today (feb 21)
so to have ramy be in this position in the 1830s where urdu was seen as superior to bangla, especially when ramy is a bengali muslim, is just extremely accurate?? and maybe it's bc we don't have much western literature where we talk about this but it's just so nice to have it acknowledged
the bangla language movement didn't happen until around the 1950s, over a century after babel's timeline, but the seeds are always there. while i do think it comes with both this islamic superiority tendency a lot of asians have (arabs i'm looking at you) and britian's imperialistic racism, i just love how it all makes sense
