Rewatched @jelloapocalypse video on the best Scooby-Doo character, and loved all his ideas on how to make them better. Velma especially, I never liked how she is just sarcastic, the resident skeptic, and harsh. So seeing her being all in for ghosts and just genuinely a curious lil lesbian full of adorkableness and love would be so refreshing!

“Shaggy Dogs and other Fabric Creatures”
Alongside an eccentric metallic menagerie, artist Barbara Franc stitches shaggy hounds with frayed fur and coats layered with assorted patches of prints.
The fabric creatures are part of Franc’s collection of animals constructed with repurposed materials that range from buttons and vintage tapestries to windshield wipers and cutlery.
To create these soft sculptures, she wraps scraps of worn trousers, curtains, and scarves around a padded, wire armature, defining a muscular hind leg with tweed or a stomach with an embroidered fairytale scene.
The tattered edges mimic a tousled tail and the fringe sticking up from an ear, adding lifelike texture to the canines.

I just found your blog but im immediately curious! What is your favorite bird and fish and can we have some facts on them if you have some?? :DD
oh my god YES absolutely!!!
my favorite fish are frogfish! (although wobbegong sharks come a close second.) these guys look so angry all the time. it's hilarious.

photos: silke baron | scubadiverlife | luke gordon via crittersresearch
frogfish are like ocean ninjas. their pectoral fins are modified so they can do a shuffly little "walk" along the ocean floor, and they have a little dangling lure they use to attract prey.
the coolest thing, though, is that their bite is so fast that even slo-mo can't capture it: they can expand their mouths to 12 times its normal volume in 1/6000th of a second. it's the fastest bite in the animal kingdom! here's a really good video of them.
sources: ocean conservancy | waikiki aquarium | prev knowledge lol
my favorite bird is a little (LOT) harder to decide, but i'm a really big fan of hummingbirds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
photos (all of adult male birds): dean latray | jason vassallo | gordon karre
my favorite hummingbird fact is that their tongues don't actually work like straws! their tongue is made of two tubes and is forked, sort of like there's two feathers coming out of the tip. the tubes expand and roll up, sort of like a pump. when their tongue sticks out, the "split ends" absorb nectar, and when their tongue is pulled back into their beaks, it's squashed and the nectar is squeezed out!
also hummingbird tongues are so long they wrap around their brain.
sources: the atlantic | prev knowledge | this absolute BANGER of a video by one of my fave youtubers (zefrank)
anyway. yeah. this was a long answer and i'm not sorry about it. thanks for the ask! <33

Thinking about how I would write an adult Scooby-Doo series, because I think it can be done.
The first thing I’d do is make the characters actually be adults.  Still young, but adults, in the mid to late 20s range.  Mystery Inc. is a private detective type business that they run together.  In this universe, the supernatural/ghosts/etc are real, but not necessarily common, so when they take on a case, the culprit might be a person disguised as a monster, or it might actually be a real ghost.  The stakes can be higher; sometimes a bad guy is legitimately trying to kill them.  Sometimes the mystery they’re trying to solve is a murder.  Sometimes they actually get hurt on their cases.
Fred: the core of Fred’s character should be that he’s incredibly kind.  Like, give a stranger the shirt off his back kind.  The “Fred can’t talk to potential clients because he might take a case for free and we need to eat” kind.  He’s an honest and good person and sometimes gets himself into trouble because he assumes other people are too.  While he’s not very good at reading people or noticing ulterior motives, he’s brilliant when it comes to mechanical or engineering type stuff, so he’s the one who keeps the mystery machine running, builds their gadgets, and of course, designs the traps.
Daphne: she comes from old money, and her parents absolutely despise her life choices, to the point where they haven’t officially disowned her, but they have basically cut her off, so she doesn’t actually have access to any family money.  Growing up wealthy has granted her a variety of skills, including speaking multiple languages, horseback riding, and fencing.  She’s very into fashion and jewelry (even if she can’t afford it anymore) and has extensive knowledge of both that can occasionally provide a vital clue in a case. And even though her parents have cut her off, Daphne still has a wide network of contacts she can ask for favors sometimes, because she’s personable, and people tend to like her.  Daphne is also very emotionally intelligent, and is usually the one who can spot when someone is lying to them.
Side note - I ship Fred and Daphne, so I think I would start them off as an established couple for this universe.  Dating, engaged, married, I don’t care.  They are stupidly in love, ride or die for each other.  There’s no will they, won’t they, no worries about cheating.  They are in a healthy, happy, loving relationship, and no one (not even Daphne’s disapproving parents) are going to mess that up for them.
Velma: she is the forensics nerd who sometimes gets super excited about the wrong thing at the wrong time (”He was mummified in seconds? That’s so cool!” “Velma!  His wife is standing right there!” “Oh.  Sorry.”).  She’s not purposely insensitive, she just gets laser focused on her work and forgets to filter herself sometimes.  She’s also the one who can get so fixated on solving whatever mystery they’re working on, she’s willing to bend or maybe break laws.  Is breaking and entering really so bad?  Not if it gets them answers.
Shaggy: he is still the comic relief, but he’s the comic relief by being the only person in the group that actually has common sense.  He manages the business’s finances, he’s the only one who knows how to cook, and the others tease him for being a coward sometimes, but Shaggy maintains that if a ghost with an axe is coming for you, running is the only sensible option.  He should also have a range of random knowledge that sounds useless, but sometimes saves the day (ex ventriloquism, origami, the history of spoons, etc).
Scooby: as this is a universe where supernatural creatures exist, Scooby is an ancient eldritch type being that took a shine to Shaggy when he was a kid, and took the form of a talking dog to befriend and hang out with him.  Aside from the talking dog bit and not aging, he never uses his powers in a way that anyone notices.  The audience is not told upfront that Scooby is an ancient eldritch being; it should slowly be hinted at throughout the series so the audience put it together, but the characters never realize it.  Scooby genuinely considers Shaggy to be his best friend, and cares about the rest of the gang too.

Go out, find a smile in the moor
Out in the woods or was it at some harbour, the smell of wet and soil stuck to my nose but well not so important as walking was all I did, walk and walk till my feet hurt a thousand boiled needles.
So I took off my shoes and ah the cool mud was so much better, I could feel the mist washing my feet and before I knew it I stopped.
Take a break. I did.
What---
Oh--
There.
Silently, bloody feet just as mine (which I didn't even feel as much, and kept watering the dark soil beneath) and still
A smile.
Bright and happy, the air swirled into many colours.
Amidst the mist, standing on muddy ground
She smiled.
(somehow, any breath stuck in the lungs,
the heart warmed and also stopped)

i keep wanting to write someone in the vein of my post about Aemond’s first ride on Vhagar, but also Viserys’ comment about how Balerion was too much for this world and like…it’s not even that the dance of the dragons corrupts the bond between a dragon and rider by politicizing it, it’s that the Targaryens themselves corrupted it in the first place by doing some weird blood magic fuckery so they’d never have to put in the work to tame a dragon. They get to bond with the dragon, regardless of if that dragon is suited to being riden or living so close to people.
they place so much importance on their relationship with their dragon (and it’s not to say that bond isn’t real or important - like i said in the Aemond/Vhagar post, it’s a few minutes of that bond at its base, same way I Am Not Immune to scenes where Dany sees Drogo and her whole face lights up while their theme is playing. Clearly, however the bond arises, once it settles, there is something equal parts wonderful and beautiful and dangerous between the two) but it’s all about THE TARGARYENS. It’s about what the dragon can do to serve their house. So you get dragons that are too angry, too violent, too difficult to be around people and then you put them in an enclosure in the middle of a city or you let them fly free over a city full of people, and the only check on them is the rider themself - a rider who may be as ill equipped to handle the dragon’s temperament as the dragon is equipped to dealing with the noise and bustle of a city. It’s a bond that could be better but it’s already innately corrupted just by virtue of the Targs taking that shortcut to bonding with them - a shortcut that doesn’t actually help train the dragons or make them more docile!

The other day, I went down the rabbit hole of "cute donkeys" and came up with my head full of things I didn't know about mules (the hybrid offspring of a horse and a donkey), and why they were once so coveted as work animals.
Brace for info dump, while enjoying this lovely photo of a trio of draft mules.
Tumblr media
The explanation is hybrid vigour (when hybrid offspring have enhanced traits compared to its parents):
Mules are stronger, hardier, healthier, have better endurance, harder hooves, sturdier skin and can handle extreme weather better than horses or donkeys. They are also more patient, more intelligent, and easier to handle than either of their parent species. Horses may be faster, but that's about the single thing they're better at than a mule of the same size.
So mules, being all around nicer to work with and getting you more work for the same amount of feed, and with less hassle, were preferred for just about every job purpose.
Habby du Magnou, a Poitevin Mulassier mare, and her daughter Lady du Magnou, a rare Poitevin mule
Tumblr media
But since horses have 64 chromosomes and donkeys have 62, mules end up with 63 chromosomes, which means they are almost invariably sterile. That's because biology gets very confused when trying to split an uneven number of chromosomes neatly in half to create germ cells. There are a few documented exceptions of fertile mule mares (never stallions), but they are very, very rare. So you have to keep crossbreeding the two parent species to produce them, usually by breeding a donkey sire (jack) to a horse dam (mare). This is because it's easier for a 32 chromosome egg to incorporate a 31 chromosome sperm into a viable zygote (fertilised egg) than vice versa.
Because of this, there was (and still is) in France a breed of absolutely massive draft horses, the Poitevin Mulassier, and a breed of big-ass donkeys (pun intended, but honestly they're arguably the largest donkeys in the world, and shaggy like Highland cattle), the Baudet du Poitou, two breeds whose main purpose was to breed the enormous and super-strong Poitevin mule.
The Poitevin mule
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This absolute unit was the must-have work-animal for all kinds of farm and industrial work for centuries, and a significant French export, until mechanisation made these magnificent creatures obsolete.
With no demand for the Poitevin mule , its parent breeds dwindled, almost to the brink of extinction. Determined conservation efforts during the last few decades are slowly bringing their numbers back up, but they're very far from their heyday, when some 20,000 Poitevin mules were born annually.
The Poitevin Mulassier
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both the parent breeds are still endangered, which means most of the current effort is directed into bringing up the numbers of Poitevin horses and Poitou donkeys. This means breeding horses to horses and donkeys to donkeys, with very few breeding opportunities allowed to produce the Poitevin mule. Only about 20 of those are born each year.
