- Micha: Well I think- Y/N: Well I’m certain no one fucking asked, Micha! Not a single damn person asked what the hell you thought, ever! In fact, I’m pretty sure you don’t think. I’m pretty sure your skull fills with all the bullshit in your organs, and it just spills out your mouth! Micha: Micha: I- Y/N: Shut up, Micha!

- NPC: Lovebirds, eh? Sadie: Arthur: Sadie: I’d rather eat a poison ivy plant with Holly Berries for dressing. *looks at Arthur* No offense. Arthur: No no, none taken. All things considered, I’d rather dive into a pit of tar and then drag myself face first through a plain of rotten chitlins. Sadie: Completely fair!
- Bill: I need you to realize you ain’t in charge here. Y/N: I need you to realize I don’t give a shit.
- Arthur: Hey Charles, uh, I got an Uhm…a spiritual question. Charles: Any particular reason you chose to ask me? Arthur: Uh well- I didn’t mean for it to be like that- I just- Charles: *sigh* What is it? Arthur: Do you know what it means when an elk stands up on its back legs? Charles: That means- Charles: WE SHOULD LEAVE, we need to leave, that’s what that means!
- Jack: …why are your boobs so big? Charles: They’re not boobs. Jack: Do you have to wear a brasier? Charles: *sigh* Arthur: He asked me the same thing a couple weeks ago, don’t think to hard bout it.
-
(Story spoilers!!) Y/N: I'm sorry, let me get this straight. Y/N: You picked up that man when he was a destitute child, grieving and starving. Taught him almost everything he knows. Y/N: Then, you did that with, what? Three others? In similar circumstances? Y/N: Created a sense of family and community, a strong bond between so many misfortuned people. With your trustworthy long term friend by your side. Y/N: And then. Y/N: One RAT. WHO IS OPENLY ANTAGONISTIC AND REEKS OF SUSPICION AS MUCH AS HE DOES HORSE SHIT, SOMEHOW CONVINCES YOU TO GO OFF YOUR ROCKER AND HARM YOUR GANG?! Y/N: Explain! Dutch: Dutch: Dutch: He praised me- Y/N: YOUR PRAISE KINK GOT YOU TO AIM A GUN AT YOUR SONS????
- Arthur: Naaah they’re an angel. Lenny: They punched Bill in the face. Seán: They told Strauss he was a waste of human material, in his own language, which they’re not fluent in. Mary-Beth: They framed Micha for a crime and got him put in prison again. Arthur: Like I said, an angel!
- John: Woman. (Translation: Darling.) Abigail: Moron. (Translation: Lovebug.)
Arthur: You tellin’ me they’re being affectionate right now? Jack: Can’t’cha read subtext, Uncle Arthur? Arthur: ???
-
(Insert Alcohol is truth serum reference)
Drunk Bill: Not to be gay, but you’re gorgeous bro. Kieran, afraid: You don’t have to be gay to appreciate a man’s beauty. Absolutely shit-faced Bill: Nah, like I’d fuck you, bro. Kieran, terrified: Okay, never mind!
- (How I imagine their first couple years together went)
Dutch: Dutch: Dutch: Dutch: How do you feel about me? Hosea, naked & beside him: ….we’re sharin’ a bedroll, Dutch. Dutch: Yes, but what are we, Hosea? Hosea: ….we’re both naked, alone, in a tent, Dutch. Dutch: That doesn’t answer my question. Hosea:
- (This one's sad, not funny, sorry-) John: You’re such a hypocrite, why is it that anything I do that you’ve done before that you get so bent outta shape?! Arthur: Because I’ve done it before you, John. John: So why do you think it’s fair to tell me not to?! Most people are proud when their younger brother ends up like’em. You don’t want anyone like you, is that it? Arthur: John: John: …oh. Arthur: Now that you got my point, will you take my god damn advice without a big fuss…please.
- John: She drives me insane! She somehow managed to make me the angriest I’ve ever been almost daily. NPC: Then leave her. John: The fu- no. What? She’s the wind beneath my wings, my darling wife, my beautiful angel. How the hell could you even think to suggest such a thing? NPC: But- John: Get outta my sight, you fuckin’ disgrace.

*********************************************
Dean pulled the car into the garage at the bunker. You and Lexi were still asleep in the back. Dean turned the car off and nudged Sam looking back at you. Sam smiled and got out. Dean leaned over the backseat and lightly shook you. “Y/n wake up sweetheart. We’re home.” Your eyes fluttered open and you stretched. You got out of the car and looked around seeing all the old cars and motorcycles. “Wow” was all you could say. Dean grabbed your hand and said “Come on. Let me show you the rest of the place.”
He walked you through the bunker and you tried to keep up with where everything was. It was a bit overwhelming because the place was so big. Dean saw you getting overwhelmed so he stopped and said “let me just show you the important things right now.” You nodded and followed him. He showed you the kitchen, showers/bathroom, his and Sam’s rooms, the library and the war room.
He walked you to your bedroom door and opened it. “This is your room. It’s right across from mine if you ever need anything. I showed you where the bathroom is, but your room has its own. Feel free to decorate your room however you want.” He carried your bags in and placed them on the floor. The room was pretty empty but at least you were safe. “Thank you, Dean” you said as you looked around. “This is great. I appreciate you and Sam letting me stay here.” “Yeah, of course. I’ll let you get settled in and meet you in the kitchen when you’re ready” he said as he walked towards the door. You wanted to kiss him again but you weren’t sure if he wanted it so you let him leave.
You laid back on the bed. You weren’t tired but you were overwhelmed. Between learning monsters were real, to almost dying to walking away from your life you were just spiraling. You felt out of control and you needed something, anything to grab onto to help steady yourself. You grabbed your bag and started to unpack your clothes and toiletries. You grabbed a pair of sweatpants and an old AC/DC shirt and some clean underwear. You decided to take a hot shower to help relax. The water pressure surprised you and the temperature was perfect. You stood under the water letting the water mix with your tears. You finally finished and made your way out of your room. You walked past Dean’s room and peeked in. You could tell he took pride in decorating his room. You noticed a picture on his nightstand and walked in to look at it. It was of a beautiful woman with dark hair. Dean was in the picture with her. Looking at how intimate they seemed you knew she wasn’t family. Your heart sunk and you left the room.
You followed voices and found the kitchen. Dean and Sam were sitting at the table when you walked in. “Hey sweetheart. How was your shower?” Dean asked. “It was nice, thank you “ you said sitting down next to Sam. Dean looked up at you a little confused but didn’t say anything. Silence filled the room and it was a little awkward. Sam broke the silence by asking you if you were hungry. “Yes a little bit, but don’t worry about me. I’ll find something” you said. Dean’s head shot up and looked at you confused. Why did it seem like she was putting up a wall. He thought to himself. Dean stood up and said “well I’m going to cook some burgers. You’re welcome to eat some if you’re hungry.” “Thank you” you said.
Sam stood up and said he was going to the library to read. Dean called him a nerd and started cooking. You sat at the table for a few minutes in silence. You felt stupid about your feelings for him. Of course he had a girlfriend and he was just offering comfort in a bad situation. You were fidgeting and looking down and didn’t notice Dean was watching you. “Hey, y/n are you okay?” He asked breaking you out of your thoughts. You looked up and shook your head yes. “Come on sweetheart, talk to me” he said walking towards you. “Dean, I’m fine. Just overwhelmed with all the change so quickly.” You said harsher than you intended. What you wanted to say was “No I’m not okay. I thought we were starting to become something but I’m a fool and you have a gorgeous girlfriend who you’re clearly in love with.” Dean sighed and walked back to the stove. “Well if you won’t talk to me at least talk to Sammy. I don’t want you to feel alone.” “Alone” you thought. Of course you’re alone. “If I feel the need to talk I promise I’ll talk.” You said getting up. “I’m going to explore the library. If you need help with cooking let me know.” You said as you walked to the door.
You walked in the library to find Sam nose deep in a book. He was such a nerd it made you giggle. He looked up and said “what’s so funny y/n.” “Oh nothing just watching a fellow nerd nose deep in a book.” You said laughing. Sam chuckled “it’s good to hear you laugh, y/n.” “Yeah I feel like it’s been awhile myself.” You said taking a seat across from him. You grabbed a book and started reading about fairies. You looked at Sam and said “fairies are real too?” “Yep, dragons too” he said without looking up. Your eyes got wide. “Wow” was all you could say.
You both sat there reading a few more minutes before you mustered the courage to ask about her. The beauty in the picture with Dean. You swallowed hard and said “um Sam, how do relationships work with this whole life you live?” He looked up and put his book down. “Well they are hard and most hunters don’t have a significant others or even children. It’s too risky and so easy to lose them. Especially if a monster catches wind that you have someone. Our mom was killed by a Demon when I was a baby and our dad was killed by the same one a few years ago.” Your heart sank. Of course this life is too dangerous to love anyone. “I’m so sorry Sam. That sounds awful. At least you and Dean have each other. So what about Dean’s girlfriend? Is she in the life” you couldn’t believe you asked that. Sam sat there for a second a little confused “oh you mean Lisa, no she’s not in the life. Dean got out and spent a year with her and her son. They broke up but he’s still in love with her. I’m sure he’d go back to her if he felt it was safe.” He said without even thinking. Tears pricked your eyes and your heart broke. A lump formed in your throat and all you were able to get out was a soft “oh”. You stood up trying to fight the tears and told him you were going to lay down. Then left the room.
As you walked past the kitchen you saw Dean cooking and your heart clenched. How did you develop feelings for him so quickly? Of course he’s in love with her. She’s beautiful and he lived with her.
You got back to your room as the tears started falling. You closed your door and laid on the bed. Why were you so hurt and upset? It’s not like you and Dean were in a relationship. He kissed you but that was it. He hasn’t tried to kiss you since so maybe it was just a kiss in the heat of the moment. But oh what a kiss. You felt a spark, something there in that kiss. You laid on your bed trying to stop the tears. Then there was a soft knock on the door. “Hey sweetheart, dinner is ready” you heard Dean say. Your heart cringed when you heard him call you “sweetheart”. You laid there trying to steady your breathing and stop the tears. You couldn’t answer him. He knocked again and said “can I come in y/n”. You sat up dried your eyes and said “yes”. He opened the door and noticed right away you had been crying. He crossed the room quickly and kneeled in front of you grabbing your hands. “Hey, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” He asked with concern filling his eyes. “Nothing, I’m fine. I’ll be out in a minute” you said pulling your hands away. Dean stood up and looked shocked. You got off the bed and started to walk towards your bathroom. He got in between you and the doorway. “No, something is obviously wrong. Did I do something wrong?” He asked. You just shook your head no. “Then talk to me, please. You mean a lot to me y/n. I can’t stand to see you cry.” He said cupping your face. You leaned into his hand and closed your eyes.
You started to speak but what came out was barely a whisper. “I’m sorry Dean. I thought we were more than what we are. When I realized you were in love with someone else it upset me. I’ll get over it. I’m sorry.” Dean stood there for a minute confused and sad. “What are you talking about sweetheart? I want more with you too and I’m not in love with anyone. Where did you get that idea?” He asked. “I saw the picture on your nightstand of you and Lisa. Sam told me all about her and how you’d probably be with her if you could safely because you were in love with her.” A tear slipped down your face and he wiped it away. “Yes, I did love her and probably always will, but I’m not in love with her anymore and I don’t want to be with her. I want to be with you. I’ve felt something since the moment I met you.”
Without another word he crashed his lips to yours. At first it was sweet but then quickly turned passionate. His hands gripping your hair and pulling you into the kiss. Your tongues fighting for dominance in each other’s mouth. You moaned into his mouth. He pulled away and you saw his soft green eyes turn dark with lust. He led you back to the bed and laid you down. He hovered over you kissing you and playing with the hem of your shirt. You nodded yes and his hand slipped up cupping your breast. Your breath hitched and your head went back when his mouth attached to your hard nipple. “Dean please” was all you could get out. “Please what sweetheart?” He asked with a grin. “I want you to take me, make me cum.” You said breathlessly. Dean pulled your pants and panties off with one tug and exposed your body to him. He bit his bottom lip and sucked in a breath. “Damn you’re beautiful” he said. His lips crashed to yours as his hand traveled between your thighs. You could feel your body responding to his touch “sweetheart, you’re soaking wet” he said as his hands slid between your folds. Your breath hitched and your hips bucked into his hand.
He started to rub circles on your clit with his thumb and he inserted his thick finger. You gasped at his touch and bit your lip. He smiled as he watched you coming undone. He inserted another finger and started to hook them up. You loved your hips in motion with his hand and you felt yourself getting close to the edge. “I’m gonna cum Dean” you said as you continued to ride his fingers. His movements got faster and your breathing became erratic. “Cum for me sweetheart, all over my hand” he said and that’s all it took. You came hard and soaked his hand. As he helped you ride your high your thighs started to close but he held them open. “Open up sweetheart” Dean said in his deep voice that sent chills through your body. He stood up and pulled his pants and boxers down, pulling his shirt over his head. You bit your lip as you looked over his amazing body. He smirked at you “see something you like, baby” he asked. Baby, god you loved the way that sounded. He slotted himself between your legs and leaned over you. He kissed your lips and leaned back. “You ready sweetheart” he asked with a mischievous grin on his face. You nodded and pulled your bottom lip in and bit down. Dean slowly pushed his hard cock in you. Inch by inch. You had never had anyone as big as Dean. The pain mixed with pleasure was toe curling. God he felt amazing. You gasped as he pushed a little further in and he stopped. “You okay, sweetheart” he asked. “Yes, keep going” you answered. You wrapped your legs around Dean’s hips trying to push him in. You felt resistance from him and he smirked. With a swift movement of his hips he bottomed out deep inside you.your walls clenched around him. “Damn, sweetheart you can’t do that. You’re going to make me cum now” he said with a little growl. He pulled out and pushed back in. With each thrust you could feel that familiar coil tighten in your stomach. How can this man make you cum with just his cock. Damn he’s good. You were so close to cumming again and Dean knew it. “Dean I’m gonna cum” you said breathlessly. “Not yet baby, climb on top” he said as he helped you get on top of him. You positioned his large length to your dripping core and slid it in inch by inch. Dean lifted his hips helping you get deeper.
Your hands rested on his chest as you rode his cock. The sounds of flesh hitting flesh and load moans filled the room. You bounced up and down and Dean took your breasts in his hands cupping them and pinching your nipples. Your hand slid between Dean and your clit. You started rubbing your clit as you moved faster on Dean. His fingers dug into the flesh of your hips. You knew you’d have bruises tomorrow but you didn’t care. Moans, grunts and flesh hitting flesh were filling the room. “I’m gonna cum, Dean” you said bouncing up and down on him. “Me too sweetheart” he said gripping you tighter. “Cum for me Dean” you said as you came and your walls clenched around him. “Fuck” he said as he came coating your walls with his seed. You two were too caught up in the moment to realize you didn’t use a condom. You sat on Dean for a few minutes as you felt his dick soften. As you got up you noticed he was covered in yours and his cum. You giggled and told him you’d be right back.
You went to the bathroom cleaned yourself and when you came back you helped clean him. He threw the washcloth into the bathroom and you climbed in bed beside him. He took you in his arms and you laid your head on his chest. You felt safe and amazing. Sex with him was far better than you imagined. “You okay, sweetheart” Dean asked as his kissed the top of your head. “Yeah, I’m good. Just a little hungry now” you said with a giggle. “Let’s go eat” Dean said standing up pulling his clothes on. You got dressed and he grabbed your hand leading you to the kitchen.
Sam was already eat when you two walked in. He looked at you and his brother and just shook his head chuckling. You sat down and Dean served both of you some food. You took a bite of the food and complimented Dean on his culinary skills. Sam told you not to inflate his ego anymore than it already was. You all laughed. It felt good to laugh. Especially with them. Your life had been turned upside down but being here with the Winchesters felt like home. They felt like home. Dean felt like home, and you were glad to be home.

“Our secret is out”
Axl Rose x reader
Year: 1989
You were peacefully sleeping in the hotel room bed next to your boyfriend Axl and everything was perfect you and Axl had been together for about 3 months now and you had decided to come on tour with him. You really enjoyed it but being in public a lot made it very hard to keep you and Axls relationship private. You had started an acting career in LA before you met Axl and we’re pretty well known and privacy was very important to you and him so really the only people who knew you guys were dating was the band and their managers who helped make sure you had access to front row seats and backstage. You and Axl laid there exhausted from all the bustle of touring and Axl really needed to rest and was passed out. Then the phone rang. You ignored it it woke you up a little but Axl seemed unfazed it was probably just slash or Duff still up and calling to ask if they could raid your guys mini fridge But the phone kept ringing and Axl was definitely awake now. “Ughhh” you said rolling over to pick up the phone off your nightstand “Hello” you said yawning and barely awake “Hi is this Axl Roses room?” Normally you would say no but you were worried it could be important so you said yes. The voice on the other line definitely was a man’s and he seemed very perky for this early in the morning “ Ok” The man said. “Can I speak to him?” “Um” you said looking over at Axl you had sandwiched his head between two pillows to tune out the talking “Who are you again?” You said in a very tired and confused tone. “I’m Howard Stern from the radio show I have a few questions I’d like to ask Axl can I please talk to him” the voice answered back. You rolled your eyes to that response knowing the last thing Axl wanted to do was press. “Wait a minute” Howard said into the phone “who are you? You sound like a girl are you one of Axls one night stands?” “What’s he like tell us” Howard said. And with that you set the phone down on the bed not wanting to answer any of Howard’s questions and let him talk to himself for a few mins. “Babe?” you said to Axl leaning over to see his face. His eyes fluttered open. “Yeah” he said his voice even deeper than usual because he had just woken up. “Howard Stern is on the phone he wants to ask you some questions and now he wants to know who I am too” you said to Axl who looked confused trying to process what you had just said due to his tired state. “Oh my god” Axl said “ The fuck does the prick want gimme the phone” Axl said sitting up. You handed him the phone and he put his ear up to it and you leaned close to him so you could hear what Howard was saying. “Hello” Axl said in a tired annoyed tone. “Axl? Is that you man?” You could hear Howard say on the other line. “Yo it’s me.” Axl said rubbing his eyes. “Axl dude what’s up your on tour some chick just answered the phone for you your living the life man” Howard said you rolled your eyes and giggled a little. Axl shook his head and smiled. “Yeah man it’s great I love it.” Axl said. “So who is the chick though Ax is she hot?” “Shes gotta be hot she’s with Axl Rose for gods sake.” Howard said. “Oh yeah man she’s the hottest.” Axl said looking down at you who was dying laughing because of these ridiculous questions. Axl tried to direct the conversation away from you though he really was trying hard to not blow the cover of you being his girlfriend. So Howard continued to ask him questions about any new albums coming out and how touring was and how the band was and blah blah. Howard was still talking when Axl said “Hey y/n can you grab me some water babe.” Then Axl stopped realizing what he did. “ Your dating y/n?” Howard said. “I thought she was just a groupie do you have a real girlfriend Axl?” Howard said in a very excited voice. “Shit” you said. “Is she that new actress y/n l/n?” Howard asked. Axl smiled and looked at you with a we’re screwed look on his face. “Well looks like our secret is out sugar.” Axl said smiling at you.

THE CHAIN MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Part Fourteen
It was four days. She was gone four days, just enough time for Santiago to just about go insane. She would only call Will or text Benny. She wouldn’t say much. That she was okay and would be back soon.
At least that was something.
Three of them were fast asleep when she drove the car as quietly as she could up the driveway and under shelter, safely in its spot. The plan was to sneak back in, none the ware. She didn’t want to make a big thing of it. Plus Will had fixed her front door, so she could get in quietly now.
That was the plan at least
She walked up the stairs, front door keys in her hand already to go. Get in and disappear.
That was the thing about a plan.
They very rarely worked out.
“You were gone for four days” a voice said from the porch
She shrieked and spun around to see Frankie sitting in the Adirondack chair watching her.
“Needed time to level out”
“Level out?”
“Well, being ripped from my blissful almost boring life into a race against time against a drug dealer. Bear dying, Gunner dying in front of me and sleeping with your best friend who I used to loathe” she sighed over dramatically “And that’s barely been a fortnight”
“Left us high and dry”
“Oh yeah, this place is really a tin shack without power and water. Yeah, you guys have really been suffering”
She walked inside without looking back.
She really wanted to go back outside and give it to him, but she couldn’t really say why. She hoped that the time away from one another would help whatever problem or thing that was happening between them but clearly not.
Her body turned on the stairs and stormed down a few steps before her mind caught up with her and spun her the other way, continuing up.
Gabby and Frankie weren’t like this. They didn’t fight. They barely even disagreed. Maybe that’s why she left. She couldn’t handle it. She didn’t like it and for some reason they wanted to take it out on each other.
She had enough time to have a shower, hop into her bed and just about get comfortable when she had another visitor.
He pulled back the covers, pulled her in close.
“Never do that again”
“Sorry”
“You scared the shit out of me, out of all of us”
“I was only in town. Twenty minutes away”
“That’s a long time if you needed us quickly”
She rolled over on to her back and looked up at him. Santiago did look worse for wear. Tired and he looked like he hadn’t been sleeping well.
“There were just a couple of things I needed to do. You know, like quit my job. Get my stuff back here. Go see a doctor…..”
“Why?”
“My head. I thought you might get sick of taking me for walkies at night time”
“What did you tell the doctor?”
“Geez” she laughed “I know I’m new to this whole special forces thing but give me some credit”
“We’re not special forces”
There wasn’t much light in the room but she saw it. She caught it. Gabby gently grabbed his chin and moved him towards whatever light that they had, to see his black eye
“What happened?”
“Nothing you need to worry about”.
“Not Frankie?” she asked in disbelief.
“Reina”
She moved from underneath him. Her bare feet had only just hit the floorboards when he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her back into bed.
“Pope, He can’t just hit you”.
“I stirred him up”.
“Why?”
“Thought it might help” he lied, she smirked because she knew that he was lying.
“What else did you tell the doctor?”
“I told her that I had quit my job, broke up with my boyfriend and just moved back home after years of being away”.
“What did she say?”
“She told me that I am in a very stressful situation and stress is a big cause of PTSD reactivation”.
“The sleepwalking?”
“Yes” she sighed “She gave me meds. I’ll be fine”.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen”.
“I was backsliding before you called. I’m a little messed up, Baby”
“Hey, I know some grown ass men three times your size that would have crumbled long ago. If they went through what you have been through. Don’t be so hard on yourself”
“I just don’t like being..”
“Human?”
She laughed again before he kissed her on the forehead.
“I’m sorry for taking everything out on you”
“Gab”
“No, just” she stopped “Its between Frankie and I and I put you in the cross fire because you where the one in front of me”
“It’s okay”
“We’re not just fucking ”
“I know, that’s not what we’re doing” he sighed cradling her face. So,she couldn’t hide away “I know it’s not just that for you either. No matter what you say.”
“I just didn’t expect us to be here, I guess”.
“I did. I just thought it would be a drunk once off”. He chuckled “Or a hate bang”
“YES!” she laughed “During an argument or something”.
“You’ve thought about that?”
“You haven’t?”
“Absolutely”
“But” she sighed “There are things we need to do. Like you know, get you guys home safely. That’s more important”.
“You never put yourself first, do you?”
She froze really not knowing what to say.
“What does that even look like?”
He chuckled moving a strand of hair out of her hair “I think that’s something you really need to figure out for yourself and start doing”.
“I’ll put it on the list”
He felt her take a deep breath and relax against him. He couldn’t say he didn’t like it
“Frankie did say something that I need to bring up”
“If it was brought up in anger. It’s probably not true”
He quickly rolled her on to her back, so suddenly that she gasped and then laughed
“Am I taking advantage of you?”
“Absolutely not”
“You’ve lost two friends in two weeks”
“I’ve lost people but you’re not taking advantage of me. Let’s face it, there’s no better way to feel alive, then what we have been doing. That’s the whole point of a grief bonk” she reached up and scratched his head, slowly soothing his mind.”I think grieving for Bear will come later. I’m not there yet and even if I was. It’s not up to Frankie to decide that it’s wrong. It’s up to me”
“I know”
“So” she said before kissing him “Let me grieve the way I want to grieve”
He kissed her harder then he intended but he wasn’t sorry about it either
“I think technically, it would be make up sex this time” he corrected
“They are two of the best kinds but it could even be both”
Santiago playfully bit her collarbone and growled “Don’t ever disappear again”
“I promise”
He wasn’t good with words. So, he let his actions speak for themselves and she let him.
#
She walked down the stairs the next morning exhausted but happy to see the brothers relaxing at her dining table enjoying their morning coffee. She really hadn’t had a lot of people in this place. She hadn’t had any at all. Even though Gabby loved her life. There hadn’t been a lot of laughter in this place, other than her own. She loved that this home was full of life right now.
Even if there was an undercurrent of uncertainty
“The lady of the manor is home” Will called out happily
“Morning”
“You okay?”
“Always”
She walked into the kitchen and poured herself some coffee before Santiago walked down the stairs.
“I’m not surprised you’re home” Benny teased
“You’re not?” she asked pouring Santiago some coffee
“I’m in the room next to yours and you guys weren’t exactly quiet last night”
She scrunched up her face  “Sorrrryyyyyy”
“I’m not” Santiago corrected
He looked over at her and saw she was blushing slightly. It was cute.  He pulled her closer and kissed her forehead gently.
“Holy shit” Will told them
“What?”
“You guys are the real deal. I just thought it was fucking”
She laughed as she sat down at the table with them
“Well, she did dump her boyfriend for me so....”
“That was not”
“Oh, come on” he laughed sitting next to her
“Did I also quit my job and move countries for you too?”
“Yeah, why not”
“Jesus” she laughed sipping her coffee
“Are you coming back to the states with us?” Benny asked excited “Are you moving?”
“I haven’t gotten that far yet”
“You can’t just stay up here all by yourself in this big house” Will encouraged
“I need to get you guys home first, okay?”
“Gabs” the brothers protested
“I have a plan, I think. I just have to figure out how to do it”
“No. You’re having the day off” Santiago told her, almost ordered
“Babe” she protested
“You’re exhausted”
“And who’s faults that. Keeping me up all night” she teased
“One day. All I’m asking is for one day. Just sleep for one day. Please”
“One?”
“But actually sleep”
“Fine”  she answered
“Thank you” he said kissing her in front of everybody, not giving a damn.
“Awwww” Will teased “You guys are cute”
“I think the word you’re looking for is disgusting” Benny answered.
She shook her head and drank her coffee before a thought clouded her mind
“Do you guys want to go out to breakfast?”
“Are you kidding?” Will answered “We’ve cooking for days. Of course we wanna go out to eat. We’re shit cooks”
The front door opened and closed behind them before Frankie was by her side putting a packet of cigarette on the table. It wasn’t the cigarettes that she was looking at though.
Her face dropped as she picked up the Zippo lighter on top of the pack.
“Where did you find this?”
“In the top draw in the kitchen” he answered with more attitude then needed  “Why?”
“It’s Bears’” The whole table went silent as she felt Santiago scratch the back of her head gently “You coming to breakfast?”
“Nah, I might skip it” Frankie shook his head
Santiago shot Frankie a dirty look but Gabby seemed unfazed
“Okay” she said calmly hopping up from the table and draining the rest of her coffee “What do you think boys? Fifteen minutes?”
“Ten” Benny offered
“Ten?” she questioned “Shit. Your cooking must have been real bad”
She had eyes on her the whole time as she walked back upstairs but she was used to that by now.
#
She didn’t notice him at first, standing in the doorway of the bathroom watching her as she was in her own little world, getting ready for the day. She spied his reflect in the mirror and gave him a small smile.
“You okay?” Santiago asked
“Always”
“Whenever you say that. I know you’re not”
“You haven’t known me long enough to know that”
“I think you forgot how long we have been in each other’s lives” he smiled walking into the room and standing behind her
“Hmm” she hummed “You know, if Benny heard us last night then so did Frankie”
“Good”
She laughed and shook her head “Can you be less of a guy?”
“No” he laughed “We’re the adults. He is the one acting like a child and this is not the time to be acting like a child. We’re still not out of the woods yet”
“You’re right”
“No one is doing anything wrong”
“Yeah”
“Meet you downstairs. The guys are hungry”
“Since when are those two not hungry” she chuckled “I’ll be down in a second”
She had just enough time to pull her hair back and grab her bag before her name was being called from downstairs. Gabby walked down the stairs laughing to herself as the guys filed out of the house.
“Sure you don’t want to come?” she asked Frankie one last time
“I’m fine”
“Do you want us to bring you something back?” she asked “Maybe a Happy Meal, to fix your mood?”
They stared at each other, not saying another word but speaking volumes, before she smirked and walked out the door

2023 PREGNANCY KINK ADVENT CALENDAR (DAY 7)
McPreggo Mukbang Part 1.
Penelope pulled the food items out of the paper bags they came in, making sure everything was in order. She’d learned the hard way before that the paper sacks that fast food places used were notoriously loud and could wreak havoc on even well-balanced audio. Burgers, chicken sandwiches and strips, …fried pickles? She’d never eaten here before, but some of her friends and a ton of her viewers all suggested she check it out for a mukbang or food review. She figured she could stream the mukbang, review the food as she went, condense the highlights for youtube, and kill two birds with one stone!
“McPreggo, huh? This stuff just magically knocks you up?” she asked her friend on video call. “Yeah. Shit really works!” her colleague stood up from his chair to show his ripe, bare bump on the video feed. Penelope just shook her head. “There’s DEMAND for that? I’ve never met a parent who said the pregnancy was supposed to be the enjoyable part!” she said in disbelief. “Oh yeah. Some couples want to try it out before they do it for real, some actors order it for parts when they play knocked up characters…. And some people are just freaks!” he laughed, before taking another bite of his burger.
Penelope raised her eyebrow at him. “Uh huh. So uh, which one are you? You seem like you’ve indulged quite a bit…” she smirked. He beamed “Oh nooooo my wifi is dying gotta go! Don’t get stuck on your back, these things don’t skimp on weight. Okaybyeeee!” he closed the video chat, leaving Penelope to start her stream.
She sat down, surrounded by amazing smelling food. Everything was fresh and hot and ready to enjoy, and she had skipped breakfast for extra content today. Time to see if the McPreggo fad was all it was cracked up to be! She started the stream.
Instantly, a few dozen viewers rolled in. She’d been hyping this up on social media for a couple of weeks, and the buildup seemed to have paid off. She did her standard greeting and thanked the few subscribers that’d popped up between stream, before shifting into the good stuff. “So I imagine 99% of you know what we’re doing today. It’s the pregnancy fast food place that’s making the rounds right now! McPreggo! This is gonna be both a mukbang and a review stream, because I want you guys to know whether or not it’s worth going out and getting long before the highlights go on youtube! So, uh, this isn’t sponsored. I dumped like $65 on food for this and I intend to try all of it! I’m not sure how big I’ll get. There has to be some kind of built in limit on this stuff, right?” She watched her chat flow for a few moments, looking for a consensus.
“Yeah no triplets is the limit”
“No limit” “There’s no limit”
“I’m stuck in my car from this stuff rn be careful”
“If there IS a limit no one has hit it yet” “The limit is your imagination”
She glanced nervously at the collection of food sitting around her. Surely it didn’t ALL make you more pregnant, right?
“Whatever, let’s just… there’s no sense in worrying about it. If it was unsafe the FDA would have shut them down by now!” she grabbed her first item, a single quarter pounder burger. “I didn’t get the like… double and triple burgers cause like… it’s basically the same burger but more meat, and I want room for the other stuff! If this one’s good, they’re all good!”
The first bite was perfect. The patty was hot and juicy, the bun, warm and fluffy, the vegetables cool and crisp, and the sauces brought it all together. “God, this is like… yeah, okay, if it’s all this good, I can see why this is popular. Like I’d get knocked up for a burger this fine,” It didn’t take long for her to put the sandwich away. Someone made a stream donation in response.
“Hi Penelope. I hope you’re wearing loose fitting clothes.  Also try to pickle chips next, they make everything else taste better.” she read out loud. “I-...” she started to respond before being cut off by the strange sensation in her gut. Her hands went to her belly as it swelled fuller, going from mildly plush to rounded out over about 15 seconds. Her palms filled with tummy as her fingers spread trying to hold it. The process wasn’t painful, or even particularly uncomfortable, but it was jarring, especially for the first time. She lifted up her blouse to bare her belly, staring down at it. Her navel was still an innie, and she didn’t have any stretchmarks, but she carried far forward, her singleton belly taking up more space than she really thought a pregnant belly would. It was heavy too, feeling like a water filled sphere, a little over the size of a bowling ball, resting squarely on her hips.
Her chat lit up.
“It works” “IT WOOOORKS YOUR A MOMMY NOW”
“MORE MORE!” “Poggers”
She swallowed firmly. “I felt it actually kick,” she said. She stared at it. She knew it’d be real, and that it’d work, but didn’t expect it to work so well and feel so real. She took a moment to center herself, patting her tummy, before returning her attention to her stream. “So, uh, yeah… this stuff really works. Fast too, and didn’t hurt! Was just… kind of unexpected!” she put her stream voice back on and got back to work. “So the pickle chips huh? I’m not super into pickles but they’re fried so… maybe they’ll be good?”
She grabbed the carton, a large order, and tried them one chip at a time at first, then two, then four, then by the handful. She demolished the whole carton in less than a minute. “Wow, those, uh, those hit the spot. And hey, I’m not any more pregnant soooo, they’re like… safe to eat if you don’t want to pop your buttons!” she smiled. Her tummy growled in anticipation, and Penelope found herself craving the remaining items. Maybe polishing everything else off wasn’t going to be so difficult after all?

On earth
Clarke's incessant worrying about everything was driving you nuts. Not to mention Finn was hard-core flirting with her even tho Raven was up on the ark probably worried sick about him.
“I got to know what you two did to get busted.” You look up from the ground, eyes shifting between the boys. Monty smirks.
“Sumac is not the only herb in the garden if you know what I mean.”
“Yeah, but Someone forgot to replace what we took.” Monty playfully rolls his eyes.
“Someone has apologized, like, a thousand times.
“How about you, Octavia? What'd they get you for? Jasper asks curiously.
Octavia's demeanor changes quickly. “Being born.” Everyone gave her a sympathetic look before Finn breaks the silence.
“You wanna know what I wanna know? Why did they send us down here anyways, why after all this time why now?” Octavia scoffs.
“God who cares? We were all rotting in cells this morning and now look at us.”
“Do you think they received like a secret transmission from the satellite on mount weather?” Clarke shakes her head and you bite the inside of your lip.
“It wasn't a satellite. The Ark is dying. At the current population level, there are roughly three months left of life support, maybe four now that we’re gone.”
“That’s why they kept you in solitary huh floated your dad?” You felt your eyes water at the mention of Mr.Griffin. Finn's eyes go wide and he looks at you.
“That’s why they took you out of gen pop too huh? It wasn’t just because you were a threat to the guards, you were a threat to the council.” You do a little bow.
“I studied under Clarke's father. I was there when he made the discovery about the arch dying.” Clarke looked at you with an unreadable expression, you always suspected she was jealous of you and your relationship with her father. I mean the two of you were close, you had been studying under him since you were 13.
“You guys were gonna go public,” Clarke stated. “But the guards showed up before they could.”
“Wait so if Y/n was the one studying under your old man, then why did you get locked up?” Finn asked, you noticed he seemed very interested in Clarke and that worried you because of Raven. But you were going to keep your mouth shut for now.
“I found out and was going to help them go public. But Wells snitched and now my fathers dead.” You knew Wells wasn't the cause of Jake's death. It was Abby. She got scared and told Jaha in a moment of weakness, but you weren't going to be the reason Clarke hates her only living parent. So you keep your mouth shut.
“We have to warn them.” Finn says, you see his hand twitch a little like he wants to reach out for Clake. Stupid stupid boy. You think to yourself.
“That's what my father said.” You try to hold back a gag at the mushy fest happing in front of you.
“Guys look!” Monty points in front of you guys, you follow it and see a lake with crystal blue water. “Oh my god!” It seemed like you and Octavia had the same thought because it wasn't long before you both were undressing leaving only your underwear and undershirt on. She looks at you excitedly. “Go for it, you were the first person on earth in 100 years, now be the first person to enter a body of water on earth.”
“Hey what do you guys think you're doing?” Clarke asks angrily.
“Living Clarke, that's what we came down here to do isn't it?” Before she could get another word in Octavia jumps forward and into the water. Everyone runs to the edge of the cliff watching for Octavia.
“I can't swim.” Monty says panicked.
“None of us know how to swim dingus.” You giggle at the boy's banter. Octavia stands and everyone cheers.
“Should we all go in?” Finn asks.
“Absolutely not. We need to get to Mount Weather.” Clarke says clearly putting her foot down.
“Mount Weather will still be there when we're done Clarke.” She scoffs.
“Octavia get out of the water.” Jasper says panicked. You whip your head around.
“See thank you jasp-” You cut Clarke off.
“No there's something in the water. Octavia get out!” You get on your knees and reach out a hand for her to grab but the thing grabs her first, yanking her under.
“Fuck!” You shout still trying to reach for her.
“What the hell is that?!” Monty yells.
“I'm going in I have to save her.” Jasper kicks off his shoes.
“Wait maybe if we distract it, it'll let her go.” You stand up looking at Clarke. “ wait that's not a bad idea. There's a big stick over there we can use that to hit the water and then Jasper can get in and grab O” Everyone but Jasper helps you grab the stick and jasper prepares to run into the water. You drop the stick into the lake and like clockwork, the thing drops Octavia, jasper runs in grabbing her.
“Hurry it's coming back!” Monty Yells.
“Come on hurry Jasper!” You Use the stick and keep smacking the water trying to keep the thing distracted. Finn and Monty run over, helping to pull Jasper and Octavia out of the water. They lay on the rock in each other's arms.
Once everyone calmed themselves and the sun had dried them off they continued their way to mount weather.
“Come on Jasp you said you wanted to go first.” Finn spoke softly.
“I-I dont think I can.” Jasper hands the rope to finn and steps back.
“Ill go.” You step forward. “Ill go first and Jasper you can come right behind me once you see everything is okay.” Jasper nods and Finn hands you the rope.
“Always the badass Y/n.” Finn smirks. You shrug and giggle before kicking off the rock swigging across the water.
“WOOOHOOO!!!” You stumble a little but stick the landing. You look down and see a metal sign, immediately you pick it up and show the group on the other side of the water.
“WE MADE IT TO MOUNT WEATHER!” Everyone cheers but before Jasper could grab the rope a spear shoots down and stabs you right in the chest knocking you into the tree.

parings: steve x y/n henderson!, eddie x y/n henderson
summary: your two best friends are madly in love with you, causing both of them to compete for your affection
warnings: none just the two of them being madly in love with you ;)
You were too clueless to notice the attraction the boys had for you. I mean, how could you have expected it? They were both your best friends. First, it all started with the battle of the bats. They attacked you, ripping mercilessly into you. Steve and Eddie went absolutely crazy, knocking the bats off you, Eddie even smashing one over and over even though it was dead.
They both rushed to your side, both scared of losing you. “Y/N! Oh god please tell me your alright.” Steve said desperately. “We need to get her out of here right now!” Eddie shouts. You groan in pain as Steve picks you up. You feel dizzy from blood loss, and can hear faint shouts of Eddie telling you to stay with them.“HURRY STEVE WERE LOSING HER!” He shouts. You can only hear more of their shouts as you pass out.
—————-
“SHES AWAKE!” Eddie shouts. Your eyes flutter open, blinking to adjust to the light. You try to sit up, but quickly feel the burning pain in your sides. “Woah don’t try to sit up, you’re pretty banged up Henderson.” Steve says, helping you lay back. You look around and notice your in Eddie’s room. “What the hell happened?” You ask.
“Those freaky demo bats nearly tore you apart.” Eddie says, feeling angry as he replays the image in his head. “Y/N! OH MY GOD!” Dustin, your younger brother shouts running to your side. You smile at him, knowing how much he cares for you. “What did these idiots get you into?” Dustin says, pushing the guys both aside. You take his hand, and hold it. “I’m fine Dustin, really. They saved me actually.” You say, glancing at the two of them.
“I’m just glad your okay.” He says. “Yeah me too.” You say, letting go of his hand. “Dustin! Come on man, Nancy and Robin are getting the van ready!” Lucas shouts. “What are you guys up to?” You say, your overprotective sister mode being activated. “Nothing you need to worry about dear sister! Get some rest. And you two better take the best care of her or else I’ll kick both of your asses!” He shouts, running out.
“Yeah yeah Henderson!” Steve calls back, causing you to laugh. That was a bad idea. Pain spreads throughout your body as you laughed, causing you to groan in pain yet again. “Shit! You alright?” Eddie says. “Yeah…just it hurts to laugh.” You say. “Don’t laugh then. Um…be sad? Yeah think of puppies dying.” Eddie says. Steve looks at him, furrowing his eyebrows.
“Puppies dying? Really man?” Steve says, shaking his head at Eddie’s words. “What? I mean, it won’t make her laugh and be in pain. You got any better ideas Harrington?” Eddie says, turning to look at him. You stifle a laugh, listening to the two men bicker over something stupid. “How about we let her rest, huh? She needs it.” Steve says, looking at you.
“I am getting sleepy again.” You say yawning. “Alright, if you need anything let me know princess.” Eddie says. He didn’t mean to let it slip out like that, instantly feelings embarrassed. He clears his throat, feeling both your eyes and Steve’s on him. Your cheeks heat up hearing him call you that. “Or..let me know Henderson. Either way we’re both here. Now, sweet dreams.” Steve says, placing a gentle kiss on your forehead.
You blush, yet again, at the small gesture. You almost feel empty as the pair leave Eddie’s bedroom, leaving the door open. What are these feelings? Blushing from what your friends do and say? Where is all this coming from? Before you can let your thoughts flood your mind, you drift off to sleep.
—————
The two go off into Eddie’s living room, Eddie plopping down on the couch. Steve sighs, and sits on the other end of the couch. “So…princess hm?” Steve says, causing Eddie to whip his head up to look at Steve. “Shut it Harrington. I-I didn’t mean to call her that.” Eddie says. Steve smirks. “Oh yeah? You didn’t mean to huh?” Steve says, taunting him.
“Seriously Harrington. Shut your mouth.” Eddie says getting frustrated with Steve’s teasing. “Hey man, I’m just wondering why you called her that.” Steve says. Before Eddie can reply, they both hear your shouts from his room. Eddie is the first to start running toward his room, that is until Steve slips in front of him, running ahead. Eddie pushes Steve out of the way, causing him to fall.
“Sorry Harrington, duty calls” He says with a wink, rushing to his room. Steve curses, and gets up, running after him. “M’lady what do I owe the pleasure?” Eddie says, bowing dramatically. You giggle, and Eddie grins to himself, happy to make you smile. “I’m starting to get hungry. Do you guys mind getting me something?” You say.
“Of course Henderson! What would you like?” Steve says, pushing Eddie out of the way. Eddie glares at Steve, causing you to laugh. “Heyy I thought we said no laughing young lady! Wouldn’t want to cause you any pain.” Eddie says. You laugh, yet again. “Not helping man. Now what do you request from chef Steve and my assistant Eddie.” Steve says, causing Eddie to scoff.
“Like you can cook Harrington.” He says, rolling his eyes. “I’ll have you know that I am an excellent cook. Y/n can be the judge.” Steve says cockily. You shake your head at their childish competition, but you can’t help but feel flattered that the two of them are trying to impress you. “Alright that settles it then. We’ll both cook something, and Y/n will tell us which one cooks the best.” Eddie says.
“Or you could just, I don’t know, order a pizza?” You say. “Aw come on, you don’t wanna taste our home cooking?” Steve says. “Okay fine, just don’t poison me. I’m in enough pain as it is.” You say with a laugh. “You will not be disappointed sweetheart!” Steve says, running out of the room. You blush at his words, suddenly feeling all warm inside. First it was Eddie calling you princess, now Steve calls you sweetheart. Why would your best friends words cause this much of an effect on you?
—————-
After a chaotic hour, and a ton of ingredients all over the kitchen, the two men finally managed to cook something for you. Well, it wasn’t exactly edible with Steve’s pizza being burnt, and Eddie’s hamburger being raw. You still thought it was sweet and thoughtful from how much effort they both put into it. “Okay yeah I think we should just order a pizza.” Eddie says, looking at the mess they made.
You had actually managed to get out of the bed, and onto the living room couch. “My pizza would have totally been amazing if it weren’t for your shitty oven.” Steve says, causing Eddie to gasp. “Don’t you dare blame your horrible cooking skills on my amazing oven Steve!” He says. “You two are ridiculous.” You say with a laugh. After Steve orders the pizza, he settles down by your feet while you rest your back against Eddie’s chest. Steve’s picks your legs up, allowing them to rest on his lap.
You can hardly focus on whatever movie Eddie had out in the tv, while Eddie plays with your hair, and Steve gently rubbing up and down your leg. You finally realize how much you actually like both of them. Not just in the friendly kind of way either. Friends don’t make other friends feel like this. Here you were, in between two of your favorite people, finally realizing the amount of love you had for them.
You look over to Steve to see him drifting off to sleep, his hand resting on your knee. You smile to yourself, noticing how pretty he looks while sleeping. Then, you notice Eddie’s movements playing with your hair stop. You hear his soft snores, and he’s asleep as well. You’re definitely the luckiest girl in the world.

A/N: I really hope you guys enjoy this chapter. I love love stories...especially this one <3
---
When we got back home, I was dying to talk to Bev and the boys. First, I consulted Bev, who went through a series of facial expressions so profound I faltered here and there throughout the entire retelling of the vacation. I could see the anger there when I told her about Josh’s secret and how he revealed it and her being upset on my behalf was validating. I hadn’t been out of bounds for merely being caught off guard and upset myself about what he’d kept from me. But then the same recognition, relief and forgiveness I had felt was shown on Bev’s face and I didn’t have to worry about her judgment, though I had worried about that quite a bit prior to seeing her. I’d worried that she’d take things to a drastic level. Thankfully, she didn’t and I was able to walk away from the conversation feeling an enormous amount of love from her that melted into the enormous amount of love I felt from Josh.
The boys weren’t coming back from their little Midwest tour for another week so I had to settle for a Facetime call with Jake, the one I was most anxious to discuss things with. I settled onto the couch, eagerly awaiting for him to pick up–when he did, I couldn’t help but grin wildly, the excitement of merely seeing his face enough to override my nerves.
“Hey, you,” Jake greeted in that kind, husky voice that had a natural soothing quality. He squinted, inspecting me through the little screen. “You don’t look that tan.”
I scoffed and looked down at my arm. “I got some color, Jake, jeez. Blame the phone camera for not being able to see my glow.”
Josh tilted his head one way, then the other, still looking at me hard. “Glowing from something else besides the sun?”
“No, I’m not pregnant,” I told him with a roll of my eyes. “And we’re also not engaged yet–technically–if that’s what you’re after.”
“Seriously? I thought he was gonna pop the question during this trip.” Jake sighed. “I mean, come on. You two should already be married.”
“Um, well, I agree,” I began, crossing my legs and beginning to fiddle with a stray thread on one of my socks. No doubt Jake knew I was the one who’d put the barrier up between Josh and I and marriage and I didn’t feel like getting into that then. “But he did bring something else up during the trip. I was wondering if he’d talked to you about it beforehand, actually.”
“What?”
“He had a job interview at a college in Savannah. He thought about us moving there.”
Jake’s brow furrowed and I couldn’t tell if he was just perplexed or a little upset or both. “Really?” was all he said, and then I knew he was feeling hurt. Not the same as the hurt I’d felt–different. Perhaps even deeper. Josh absolutely never kept secrets from Jake throughout their entire lives.
“Yeah. It took me by surprise too,” I told him. “I’m also surprised he didn’t mention it to you. It’s not like Josh to be able to keep his mouth shut for like, anything.”
Jake chuckled softly, then his face fell into a frown again. “I know. That’s very strange. I suppose I’m glad he didn’t tell me and not you but–”
I sighed. “Yeah. I know.”
“He really didn’t tell you anything?”
I shook my head. “No. Nothing until we were right outside the university. It scared the hell out of me, Jake,” I confessed. It was always so easy to talk openly with him–I was grateful for that, for how much our friendship had grown over the years. “Suddenly he drops this bomb and I couldn’t make sense of it all right then and there. We talked more, obviously, and it’s not even like he’s dead-set on moving there but–”
There was a gentle look of deep understanding in Jake’s eyes. “But he thought about it. A lot, apparently.”
“Exactly. I don’t want to live there, honestly. Maybe somewhere else someday. But I’m not ready to leave here yet.”
“That’s completely fair. I don’t know if I feel great about the idea of my own twin being that far from me either.”
I smiled a little. “Also fair. You should talk to him, too. I think he’s got a lot to say to you that he’s been holding back.”
Jake sighed. “I don’t want Josh to hold anything back from me.”
“I honestly don’t believe any of this secret keeping was on purpose. It’s just not in his nature.” I wanted to explain more to Jake but knew those were Josh’s words I’d be speaking. He was the one who needed to bring his twin up to speed on all he’d been thinking and feeling. “So, suffice to say, I don’t think we’re moving anywhere new.”
“That’s good. I’m all for change, but I don’t think I can handle another big one right now.”
“Me either. Except for getting married and buying a house, hopefully.”
Jake smiled. “Hopefully? It’s happening.”
I leaned back, stretching and holding the phone up with one outstretched arm. “Should we all just start a commune? Y’know, buy a big piece of land, all live together because we’re painfully codependent, all of that good stuff.”
“That sounds very Josh-like,” Jake said with a laugh. He looked more relaxed then, though I could clearly see the signs of exhaustion on his face. His undereyes looked darker and his entire face held a kind of sleepiness; I questioned it and he gave a slightly reassuring smile. “Touring is a lot. What we do now is different from how it was before–a few shows here and there in town, a few in Detroit. It’s definitely a bit tiring, but we do really love it.”
“Good. We knew you guys would blow up.” I sat up again, resting my elbow on my knee. “We just miss you. What are we gonna do when you guys are gone for like, a year?”
“There’s breaks. We’ll see each other.”
I loved hearing the assuredness of Jake knowing they’d grow more and more into their success; still, it always felt like a lot to process. “I’m not omitting Josh and I being roadies from the realm of possibilities,” I told him. “This codependency is a killer.”
Jake laughed again. “It’s just love. That’s all it is.”
–
After Josh came home, we talked from beginning to end–again–through his thought process about the job and the move. He talked as if they still held potential for a little while, but when he brought up how he and Jake had actually talked as well between classes, the dismissal of the two things came to light. He didn’t want to move states away and I believed him when he said it–he didn’t even need to reassure me. I could hear it in his voice and see it in his face, this kind of relief that I was sure came from not only finally revealing it all to me in Savannah but also, finally, talking things through with his brother. The bond he had with Jake, as well as with Sam and Danny, always came first in my mind even if Josh didn’t see it that way and I was fine with that. Jake and Danny were processors and held wisdom in their minds even when they weren’t quite ready to share it; Sam, on the other hand, reacted to things quickly and didn’t shy away from the full expression of his feelings. All of them held their own advantages when it came to communication and hard decisions, influential in their own rights.
“There’s so much to think about,” Josh mused. We were sitting on the balcony, watching the sun begin to set; I was studying the way the light hit the leaves, pondering what our next move would be–quite literally–until Josh turned to me and took my hand. “What are you thinking about right now?”
“I’m thinking about how much change might be too much change,” I told him, looking into his eyes. “Maybe trying to buy a house right now isn’t the best thing. There could be other things to focus on. And maybe we could move to Detroit sometime in the future.”
He smiled. “Other things to focus on–like a wedding?”
I smiled back. “Yeah. Like a wedding.”
Once again I found myself mapping the trajectory of our life and all the future choices I could think of in my head; the slight squeeze of Josh’s hand around mine made me slow down. “Maybe we don't have to plan every little thing,” I said, mostly directing that at myself. I sighed and rested my head on his shoulder. “I miss being more spontaneous. Being an adult sucks.”
Josh chuckled, jostling me a bit. “Only sometimes. Besides, we were adults when we met.”
“Kind of. Also kind of silly kids.”
“We’re still that way. We always will be.” Josh bounced up to his feet and took both my hands, pulling me up with him. “Let’s go have dinner on the beach. That’s spontaneous, no?”
It was warm but the air was cooling and would certainly be chilly soon, even more so once we were on the water; the thought of the strong breeze against our skin as the low waves rolled to shore propelled my emphatic “yes.” So we scraped together some sandwiches, chips, a tupperware container of fruit and the six-pack that had been hanging out in the fridge for a little too long. The sun was lower as Josh drove, a half-dome of golden-orange on the horizon as we headed west toward the lake and, by the time we parked the car, a cool, calm dusk was in full force.
Josh led the way down the rocky, sandy bank, through the tight cove of trees and to an entirely empty part of the beach. The sun was far to our left, merely a sliver over the water, and the deepening of the blue sky melted with the calm water, immersing us in a whole world of blue. Josh had returned to that quiet state that unnerved me, but he didn’t look nervous–he looked like someone who was holding in a laugh.
“What’s so funny?” I questioned as we settled down on a blanket. I popped open two beers, handed one to Josh, and prodded the container of fruit open.
“Nothing,” he said, but then he began laughing wildly like I’D said something hilarious.
“Not another secret?” I pressed, actually joking.
“No. No secret,” Josh said with a wave of his hand. He nestled right against my side and took a drink, looking ahead at the water. “We’ll have a better view of the stars here.”
I looked up, past the wispy layer of grey clouds and into the darker part of the dusk where a few stars had begun to shine through. Josh’s weight on me, the darkness and the soothing sound of the water were lulling me into a daze and I knew I could have easily, literally fallen asleep had it not been for Josh abruptly shooting forward to grab his backpack again. It felt like the time he was going to propose–I expected a ring to be pulled from that backpack pocket, but he only took out a pack of cigarettes.
“Really?” I asked teasingly.
He put one between his lips. “Yes, really.” After he lit it, he passed the pack to me but I waved it away.
“We’ll share,” I told him, and Josh handed it to me after he exhaled. The whispers of smoke spun into the air and away while I took a drag; I felt nervous then, my expectations unmet but the knowledge of the upcoming proposal happening sometime, somewhere remained. I did wish many times that I hadn’t been so resistant to marriage. Josh had been ready sooner than I had, but I knew in my heart it hadn’t been much sooner. Sometimes I felt like I’d made him waste all that time with me–why should he have stuck around for someone unwilling to make the ultimate commitment? What had I been so resistant to anyway?
After we ate and drank some more beer, we walked along the shore, barefoot through the cold water. Josh held my hand and we looked for constellations and lone stars and planets–I spotted Arcturus, bright and white, and the Big Dipper above while Josh excitedly pointed out Virgo.
“It’s really incredible,” he said while we paused, both of our heads tilted back to look in wonder at the infinity that lay above us. “All of that–all those stars, planets, galaxies and we’re all here on Earth. There has to be other life out there. I don’t know why anyone says otherwise.”
“Sometimes it feels scary,” I admitted. “Not that there’s other life out there, but just how big all of this is. I don’t think we’re insignificant though.”
“We can’t be. And everything can’t be random.”
I squeezed his hand. “Definitely not. The universe knew what it was doing when it brought you into my life.”
“It did.” I watched Josh bring his gaze down to the water, turning to look past me. “Check out that boat–they’re way far out.”
I turned to look at it and I was a little mystified at how small the distant light on it was, how far away whoever was commandeering the ship was from us; I couldn’t hear the motor, only the sound of the waves and then Josh clearing his throat. When I turned back to him, he’d disappeared from my eyeline–no, he was down on both of his knees and looking up at me.
“Josh–” I began to say but I didn’t know what to say next. My heart sped up suddenly, racing hard in my chest and into my ears, and a wave of dizziness came over me so fiercely that I placed one hand on his shoulder to steady myself.
He smiled. “I’m so very glad I can still make you swoon, darling.” In his hands he held a small black box, so shiny it looked like it was carved from obsidian itself. “I want to do that for the rest of our lives.” Even in the dark I could see the glimmer of his eyes and the flush spread across his cheeks, his own nerves alive as much as mine were, I was sure. “You are absolutely everything to me and I want to go everywhere and do everything with you forever.” Josh took a breath and laughed a little before his slightly shaking hands–the sight of which made my heart swell with so much adoration I felt dizzy all over again–opened the box. I glanced down at the ring but it was a blur; I was too focused on his beautiful face and watching his lips create the next string of words: “I’ve wanted us to be bound together for eternity for so long now, love. Will you marry me?”
I dropped to my knees in front of him, threading my fingers through his hair, pulling him in to kiss. It was just my instinct then–to kiss him with all the love I had in my body, to hold him close enough that he knew I’d never let him go, not caring that the water was cold and soaking my pants. All I could feel was him. Josh hummed against my mouth and I pulled back to finally verbalize my answer: “Of course, Josh. I love you so much.” I kept my hands on the back of his neck but looked down to really see the ring and, when I did, all I could say then was, “Oh my god.”
It was gorgeous and I was speechless as I looked at it. The moonlight cast its glow on the white gold band and the teardrop diamond that was surrounded by tiny blue gems–all of it was perfectly suited to me. I kept gawking and Josh chuckled, then took it out of the box and took my hand, sliding it onto my ring finger as he quietly said, “I hope I got the right size.”
He did. He nailed it. I lifted my hand and gazed at the beauty of it some more, still trying to find the words to express all the gratitude and even surprise. Sure, I’d known the proposal would happen. But maybe nothing ever prepares you for the feelings that come along with it regardless, and from the adoration and the gratitude came a swell of feelings I couldn’t name, but it was all so overwhelming that I started crying.
“Oh, no, sweetheart,” Josh cooed, wrapping me in his arms as I brought my hands to my face, weeping into them and shuddering against his body. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, nothing,” I whimpered, getting the ring wet with my own tears as I tried to wipe them away, but they kept coming. “I’m so happy, Josh. I just–I’m so sorry–sorry it took so long.”
Josh rubbed my back. “Don’t be sorry. Please don’t be sorry. I’m not sorry about it.”
When the tears slowed, I hugged him back, resting my wet cheek on his shoulder. “You’re not?”
He giggled. “No! We’re together and we always have been. That’s what matters.”
I lifted my hand to look at the ring again. “This is too much. It’s too beautiful.”
“It’s just right. It’s just for you. Do you like it?”
“I love it. It’s perfect.”
“By the way,” Josh said, then turned to kiss my forehead. “It’s a lab-grown diamond. No blood spilled for that one.”
I sniffled. That was so him. “That’s good. Thank you. For all of it.”
Josh gently guided both of us back up to our feet. He held my hands, looking down at the impossibly gorgeous ring he’d placed on my finger. “You really like it?”
I watched the diamond sparkle–literally–in the moonlight and the tiny sapphires glow like the water before us. “I love it so much. You could’ve gotten me a twist tie for all I care but, Jesus Christ, Josh–this is stunning.”
He smiled. “I thought for a long time about what it would look like. It reminds me a little bit of the pendant you got me for our first anniversary. That may have influenced my decision making a little, too.”
“You know how much I love when we match,” I told him, taking away my right hand to wipe a few leftover tears away. My heart still felt so full and there was so much inside me I wanted to say, but eloquence didn’t feel possible then. Instead of trying to speak further, I kissed him again.
The lingering kiss over, Josh nuzzled into my neck. “I love you, mama. I’m so happy you said yes.”
I wrapped my arms around him and closed my eyes as his curls brushed against my skin with the same gentleness as the breeze. “There’s no universe in which I’d say no.”

In Justice We Trust (104203 words) thesavagesabretooth
catch up here.
With Simon Blackquill and Athena Cykes assigned as their psychologists, the Phantom and Fulbright must grapple with their identity, their deeds, their future, and their love for the twisted samurai whom they betrayed.
All the while, Edgeworth and Wright find their relationship tested as they walk the narrow path between pursuing real justice, and the dark age of the law.
-
December 25, 9:30 am
Robert affected Bobby's bright, shining smile as the interpol agent touched his arm. He snapped to a salute and Athena saw him nod at her as she opened the mood matrix.
"Well, Ms. Kelso," he began, "at the moment it looks to me like the first car must have belonged to the target the agents were following. I'd guess that someone in that car shot at the agents in the following car, and then swerved to make it look like they were killed in a wreck."
“Tracks to me…” Agent Kelso mused as she pulled the bullets back out from her sleeve to flick between her fingers. “Though it still seems too easy to me…I’m worried , you know? These bastards killed two good, honest men. If we’re not smart about this they’ll get away unpunished.”
Athena's eyes flicked to the mood matrix as she tuned out all but the conversation before her. It barely registered anything at all despite the agent’s proclamation.
There was a sudden shadow over her, and she realized that Simon had stepped up behind her elbow and was watching her work. He didn't interrupt, either her, or the conversation, but gave her a nod of greeting.
"Is that too easy, though? If they thought they did away with both the agents, then they'd only have to deal with local police," Robert said. "No offense to the amazing justice officers they have here, but if they see two bodies in two wrecked cars on the highway, well, I don't know if they'd even have gotten to the gunshots. Nobody guesses there was another guy in the first car and he makes a clean getaway, right?"
Kelso flicked a rifle round in the air with her thumb, and caught it between her fingers with a pensive look on her face.
"You could make that assumption, yeah. The scene’s designed to make you forget about the shooting.”
It was a non-committal answer, drawing Athena’s attention back to the matrix as she sensed…something.
It wasn’t quite discord between them. Not a tumultuous tangle of emotion that was dying to break free into the truth and understanding, nor the confused misfiring of emotions during a time of stress.
There was not a single ripple across the screen.
It was a glassy lake, providing a clear image of Robert and Kelso chatting behind it. It was a sensation of absence, notable for its familiar strangeness.
"Exactly," Halblicht nodded. "The scene is set up to make you come to an immediate conclusion, without feeling the need to look any deeper."
Kelso chuckled as she flicked the bullets between her fingers again with the rhythmic click against her rings. “So the killer makes it look like a wreck and slips away while we’re too busy making assumptions. If that’s the case, sir, we could be wasting time here while the guy vanishes back into his network.”
"What do you make of it?" Simon murmured quietly in Athena's ear.
Athena frowned and leaned her head back to whisper.
“Nothing good, Simon. I’m not picking anything up– normally I’d think Widget was malfunctioning, but …” she tapped her ear “...I haven’t been hearing anything , either. I’ve been picking up a lot from Agent Ash, but..”
Kelso glanced her way for a moment, the bullet pinging as it flipped in the air and landed between her fingers again.
Simon's eyebrows raised and Athena could feel his mixed emotions, anxiousness, as well as an interest and curiosity. "But not Kelso. Fascinating."
"I agree, Agent Kelso!" Halblicht nodded, breaming broadly and bringing Kelso's attention back to him. He adjusted his glasses. "I can't say I'm familiar with how interpol operates unfortunately– how would you advise picking up the trail from here?"
Athena shook her head quietly, feeling much the same as the emotions radiated between them. “It’s very fascinating. I can’t help but wonder…”
Kelso flashed a bright smile at Halblicht in return as her hands went up to her own sunglasses in her hair.
“Honestly? I think we should tell Agent Ash that we’ve found all we have here and join the team in the nearest town. It’s likely the survivor of the fake crash slipped there to try and contact backup or extraction. If it was back in the day we woulda sent one of the mass-investigation teams but…well. Things change.”
She glanced Athena’s way again with an expression of casual amusement without a ripple of emotion behind it “I’ve been meaning to ask…what’s that gizmo you got there, pretty?”
"Interesting device, isn't it, Agent Kelso?" Simon purred. "Cykes-dono, would you like to explain it, or shall I?"
Neither of them got a chance, however, because that was when Ema came back.
“Took some doing,” Ema’s voice was grim…and as Athena turned towards her, Widget picked up a strong undercurrent of sadness and fear in pulsing blue waves. “But it’s open.”
Halblicht looked up. "I take it it isn't good news, Ms. Skye?"
Kelso’s smile fell from her face. “...whatta we got?”
“A complication,” Ema snorted as she stepped aside and gestured towards the trunk, “that completely fucks our whole perception of the case.”
Athena’s heart sank, and it showed on her face as she muttered “....the classic turnabout at last. Mierda.” She hopped up to inspect the trunk with nervous anticipation.
Simon followed along with her, and Halblicht, she noticed, brought up the rear behind Kelso.
When Athena peered into the trunk, what she saw was a blackened lump. A large blackened lump. And then she started to make out features.
It was a body. Burned and destroyed, but very recognizably a body. More recognizably even than the ones in the front seats of the cars, having enjoyed some small protection due to having been shielded by the trunk from the worst of the flames.
Athena shuddered, her eyes going wide as she took a photograph with Widget’s internal camera. Her eyes scanned what features and details she could as her heart hammered in her chest.
“A third body…”
Kelso whistled as she leaned over her shoulder. “...well that ain’t good, is it?”
"I'd say not," Simon drawled, peering over Athena's shoulder. "We have two missing agents, and three bodies. And a very manipulated crime scene."
Halblicht spoke up. "Could the target they were following have had some unfortunate soul in the trunk in the first place, Prosecutor Blackquill?"
"Grim idea, detective," Simon drawled. "This is the agents' car, however."
“Maybe it’s one of the assailants.” Kelso mused.
Athena tuned them out for a moment as she leaned in to pick whatever details she could from the charred corpse. Face…hair…clothing…identifying markers. Anything the fire had not destroyed.
There was nothing on the corpse that had survived the fire. No clothes, no jewelry, no shoes.
Actually… that was very odd. They'd found fragments of clothing on the other corpses, but this one– better preserved– had nothing.
“The corpse is naked.” Athena said out loud. “There’s not a single trace of clothing, burnt or not. There was a naked corpse shoved in the trunk.”
Kelso put her hand on her chest with a little gasp , ponytail bouncing around her face as she grimaced. “....eeesh. Grim.”
"Grim indeed," Simon murmured, his hands behind his back. He spoke up sharply. "Detective Halblicht– why might our suspect have stripped this body naked and not the other two?"
Halblicht affected a guileless, puzzled expression, touching his chin. "Tricky question, prosecutor Blackquill! Could be an obscure fetish?"
"Ha! interesting perspective, but doubtful, half wit," Simon sneered. Athena, astonished, realized that they were doing some kind of bit. "Cykes-dono, improve on Halblicht's answer for me."
Athena choked, as Simon pulled her into it– coughing for a moment before she lowered the holoscreen after taking another picture.
“There’s not a lot of direct evidence about it being a fetish, aside from the nudity…” she mused before continuing. “If I was to guess, it’d be either to attain them for themselves or to hide a fact about the body. Clothes are an identifying marker, after all…Agent Ash said the same thing earlier.”
She turned towards the others. "But what are clothes, but an outward expression? The image of what you’d like the world to see as you.’ Which is true both from a personality standpoint, and from a literal…I think the clothes were taken either to remove the identifying marker…or to divert it onto another.”
Agent Kelso started flipping the rifle rounds through her fingers again, multiple now at once as she tilted her head. “I’m not following you, Miss Cykes.”
Halblicht saluted. "I think Miss Cykes might mean, either they took the clothes so the body wouldn't be recognized, or so some other body would be– Agent Kelso. Uh, was that right?"
He grinned hopefully at her and there was no emotion in it– which meant that the smile wasn't an accident, it was as all deliberate things are, communication.
Athena’s smile in return was the same as his as she nodded. “That’s right. What we have here is someone the killer didn’t want recognized…or wanted to be recognized as!”
“Like a fucking disguise?” Ema Skye grumbled from beside Simon.
Kelso whistled low, before she put her hand to her chest and laughed, pointing a lazy finger…and the tip of a rifle round… at Athena as the quiet chuckle hung in the air.
“Good one, Miss Cykes! I mean, I know we’re dealing with spies here, but isn’t it a little short notice for a disguise? You can’t just throw on someone’s clothes and call it a disguise, you’d be caught in a second. Right?”
"I'd wager it depends on the skill of the spy," Simon offered. "And how well the person being impersonated was known to others. Still, we have no proof that's what was done with the clothes. They could have been used in some other way. Perhaps you have a suggestion, Agent Kelso?"
Agent Kelso chuckled as she started tapping the bullet through the space of her fingers. “Easy. Something got on the clothes that the killer didn’t want seen. Blood, hair, something like that. They didn’t have time to clean it up so…into the fire it went. Or hell, maybe they took it with them.”
"Oh, that makes sense," Halblicht nodded enthusiastically. "After all, the body didn't burn as well in the trunk, so they probably put the clothes in the main part of the car so it would be destroyed."
"Interesting premise," Simon purred. "Athena, you're our defense– can you poke any holes in that argument?"
“Well…even burned clothes leave things behind. There were scraps of clothing inside the cars, right? But was there enough residual to imply a whole other set of clothes? And on top of that…” She smiled despite the growing pulse of muffled concern through the static. “Why strip the whole body? Why not just remove the tainted clothing?”
Kelso tapped another bullet through her fingers, a second joining the first as she nodded “I guess…but it’s possible the remainder of the clothing’s mostly ash on the bottom of the car. There’s no way we could tell what outfit it came from.”
As they were chatting, Athena heard the distinctive musical trill of Agent Ash's cell phone ring again.
Simon meanwhile, tapped his chin. "There's no way to tell indeed– but dental records identified the other two bodies. It's likely they'll identify this one too, given time. However, as you mentioned, time is exactly what we're short of. So perhaps we can figure it out by logical process of elimination."
Athena nodded seriously, glancing at Simon “We’ve done it before…we just need to look at this case from every angle…maybe we can crack it before the dental records come in.”
Agent Ash answered the phone in the corner of her vision, and Athena’s keen ears heard her start to laugh again, picking up only a snippet of her reply through the barely stifled snickering “... you heard me. Your best chess metaphor, for old times sake.”
For a moment Kelso seemed distracted, her reply cut off as she strained to listen to Agent Ash.
"Something wrong, Agent Kelso?" Halblicht asked with a doggish cock of his head.
“Looks like the pack leader’s got a call, that’s all.” Kelso’s tired smile returned to her face. “Probably just from an old friend, it sounds like.”
Sheila Ash had begun laughing again, leaning against the side of the van with her arms around her stomach, cackling away as she thumped its side with the palm of her hand.
“...a real funny old friend,” Kelso finished “where uh…where were we, guys?”
Simon folded his arms. "We were about to try to deduce the identity of the stripped body. Why don't we start with who was at the scene. Half bright, what information are we starting with?"
Halblicht saluted. "Sir! Uh, we know for certain that the two agents would have been at the scene. We have the target and potentially a second person that the target met up with at the airport."
"Good. So that's potentially four individuals at the scene of the crime. Athena– any insight?"
Athena tapped her cheek with her gloved finger as the mood matrix hovered…pointed towards Kelso.
“C’estBizzare …” she mused as she tapped away. “we have four potential individuals on the scene, with two interpol agents and potentially two agents of the Organization. The target and a handler presumably, oui? And yet we have three bodies. One was clearly moved from the Agent’s car to the target’s car…and another shoved in the trunk and stripped naked. Meaning one of the bodies has to be from the Organization.”
Athena tilted her head to the side “...specifically the one that was stripped and stuffed in the trunk. But that leads to an obvious puzzle…”
Kelso’s brow furrowed. “...mmm…maybe the target was killed and the organization wanted to be rid of the body?”
"That's possible," Halblicht said, stroking his chin, "If the target was killed in the crash that their compatriot initiated to hide the bodies."
"Oh, good theory," Simon said. "Too bad that this body has a gunshot wound." He pointed to the corpses' temple.
“Then maybe the organization executed their agent.” Kelso countered as she pushed rounds through her fingers again.
“We all saw firsthand what happened when the agent wearing Bobby Fulbright was compromised…failed the mission.” She hissed through her teeth with her hands raised up .“they might have decided the target failed the mission, or figured out interpol was on to them and disposed of old trash.”
Despite her hiss of concern and ‘uncomfortable horror’...Athena registered nothing again. She frowned at the display. “...mm.”
"Seems like adding a body might complicate the scene though," Halblicht considered. "Wouldn't it have been more practical to keep the failed agent around and execute him where he wouldn't draw extra suspicion?"
“Everyone makes mistakes, Detective. Maybe he had no choice?” Kelso countered with a roll of her shoulders.
“...Agent Kelso?” Athena spoke up. She saw Sheila moving out of the corner of her eye, gathering something from the trunk of the SUV. “How’s it make you feel? The state of the scene, the third body…the executions of your comrades?”
Kelso turned towards her with a tilt of her head.
“...I don’t think right now’s the time for that kinda thing, miss. We’ve got a third body on site and a lot of unanswered questions. Let’s save the ‘feelings’ talk for the post-mission therapy sessions.”
Athena’s reply was interrupted by Sheila, who walked over with a wolfish smile on her beautiful face.
“Hello, cubs~. I have some distressing news!”
"It's been a day for that," Simon said. "Why don't you enlighten us."
The quiet, almost imperceptible jangle of metal caught Athena’s keen ears…and she saw the glint under Sheila’s coat of something metal. It was when the woman stopped and crossed her arms, that she saw it was a pair of handcuffs newly clipped on her belt.
“Agent Kelso, darling?” she cooed cheerfully as the Agent’s head snapped up.
“Yes ma’am?” Keslo saluted sharply to her, only for Sheila to wave her hand.
“At ease, cub…bad news…someone’s broken into your car! My dear, old friend Miles Edgeworth reported it in to me just now.”
Kelso’s eyes widened. “...wait, really?? Shit…shit, as if my luck wasn’t already terrible!”
Despite her words, hidden deep within them…Athena saw nothing on the matrix. Nothing but the faintest flicker, there and then gone, of fear.
"That is bad luck," Halblicht agreed, frowning. He stroked his chin. He was another placid mirror of nothing. "Were you keeping valuables in there?"
Kelso shook her head, running her hand through her hair and grabbing her sunglasses a little more firmly. “No sir, just my suitcase. I dunno why someone would break in…”
Athena leaned on her hands, listening in as the mirror of emotions stayed near-still before her. The only emotion registered was Agent Ash’s near present, overwhelming joy, which she tuned out of the Mood Matrix with a few taps of the screen.
Ash leaned forward, smiling thinly. “Maybe they thought they could steal your gun. You have it on you, cub?”
"I should hope so," Simon murmured. "Very bad form to leave those lying around."
His gaze flicked over to Halblicht, and Athena felt a sting of mingled emotions. She noticed his eyes linger on where Bobby Fulbright used to keep his shoulder holster. He had very much not been given a gun for this case.
Athena noticed the gesture, and a dark worry grew inside her. Halblicht wasn’t armed. She wasn’t armed…Simon wasn’t armed, not even with a wooden sword.
Kelso pulled out a pistol from a holster under her coat…and lazily spun it around her finger with the rifle rounds clutched between the fingers of her other hand like some sort of claws. It was a large, nasty looking gun.
It was bigger than any she’d seen in the states with the strict gun laws, with a strangely thick pistol grip where the clip was inserted and a muzzle longer than her hand.
“Of course I brought it, ma’am. I’d never be stupid enough to leave it behind.” Kelso chuckled “...looks like they must have gone through the trouble of breaking in for nothing.”
Sheila shifted, her hands on her hips– one by the pair of handcuffs Athena had seen, and the other by the grip of a silver-etched pistol of her own in her thigh holster. She smiled brightly at Kelso before she nodded.
“Good girl…but that’s not the only bad news I got.”
Simon's eyebrows rose. "Oh no? And here I thought things were going poorly enough."
“Agent Kelso~” Sheila began with a chirp in her voice. “...can you tell me about your movements when you landed yesterday?”
Kelso spun her gun around her finger, “my movements, ma’am? I arrived at the airport and departed the plane. I tried to follow the target and the other agents, but was delayed on the way out by some airport foot traffic. I wasn’t able to catch up, and lost sight of them.”
"Probably saved your life, by the look of it," Halblicht sniffled, giving an artfully tragic look over the burnt and twisted cars. It was interesting, really, to see when he was performing like now, and when he was genuinely emoting.
“Yeah…” Tears brimmed in Kelso’s eyes as she turned her eyes downcast with a scuff of her foot. “Poor guys. They were good agents. Maybe if I were there I coulda done something to help. Saved them, maybe, or died trying.”
Athena was fascinated by it– this interplay of false emotion, when she’d seen Halblicht, both sides of him, truly emote over the last few days– and Kelso, a placid lake of emotions so quiet she could barely pick them up aside from easily missed flickers buried in the sea of static.
“Oooh…” Sheila wagged her finger, before she broke out laughing again, half doubling over “Bzzzt! Wrong answer! You are NOT our lucky winner, Agent Kelso!”
She stifled her laughter long enough to lean forward with a wicked grin. “You were seen pulling out of the parking lot in your car directly behind Agents Fish and St. John. By security camera no less.”
Simon turned more fully toward Kelso, and Taka's wings fluttered restlessly. "Agent Kelso, that's quite the discrepancy."
Kelso’s gun spun faster around her finger as she smiled nervously, glancing off to the side. “Guess it is, huh?”
“Do you have an explanation for your pack leader, Kelso?” Sheila purred. “Or do I need to call in the interrogation team?”
“I got scared!” Kelso suddenly said, an expression of fear etching onto her face as she put her hand to her chest. The gun stopped spinning, dangling from her fingertip by the trigger guard as she leaned forward with a plaintive edge to her voice. “I’ve only been in Interpol for a little bit…and I’m doing my best…but when I saw what those people did to their own agent? I got scared. I slowed down on the highway and let them slip away.”
“...so it was dereliction of duty?” Sheila tutted her tongue. “I remember you during training…you were always so much stronger than that.”
Despite the woman’s tone and face there was nothing in the matrix– ripples so small she could only barely feel them.
"We all get nervous sometimes, Agent Ash, you should give her a break," Halblicht said gently. "I can't blame anyone for being afraid of these people. Even an interpol agent– that's an interesting side arm you've got by the way, Agent Kelso."
“Huh? T-thanks, sir.” Kelso blinked away her tears, wiping at her face with the back of her hand before she held up the gun. “This? Thanks. It’s a custom Five Seven, sir.”
Sheila put her hand on her chin with a smile. “You’re right, of course. We’re only human…fear is appropriate.”
Athena glanced at Halblicht with a significant smile before she waved her hand…’go on’.
Halblicht looked delighted. "A Five Seven! Custom! Well that explains the bullets you've been playing with, doesn't it? Unmodified Five seven doesn't use such big rounds!"
Simon slipped away from Athena's elbow, and disappeared out of her sight as the discussion continued.
“Sure doesn't, sir.” She slipped the clip out of the gun, and began casually loading the rounds from her fingers into its feeder. "But this one does. It’s a little hard to handle, but worth the trouble.”
Athena watched the gun carefully, just in case. “But even with such a powerful gun, you didn’t follow your fellow agents that night? Where’d you pull off?”
“Hmm??” Kelso looked her way. “sorry, I didn't quite catch that.”
"I think Ms. Cykes was wondering how far you went along before you got cold feet," Halblicht said, still smiling. He watched the gun carefully, as she was loading it, and Athena felt a glimmer of almost unnoticeable anxiety flash through him. "You didn't witness the wreck, did you?"
“If I had, don’t you think I would have called it in?” Kelso said. “I…didn’t get much further than the edge of town. I pulled off into a roadside rest area and tried to compose myself.”
She clicked the clip solidly into the gun with a loud clacking sound.
Athena’s anxiety matched his, and she tensed up a little at the sound, a breath escaping her lips. “So you didn’t see any of it.”
“It is a shame…” Sheila sighed. “We could have used a firsthand witness in this little sordid affair. We really thought you’d have been able to handle the job, Agent Kelso…”
Athena felt Simon's mixture of smug pleasure and deep anxiety before she saw him step back in behind her.
"It is a tragedy," Simon said. "But as the detective said, I suppose it saved her life in the end. We should probably move on with the investigation."
“Welcome back, Simon.” Athena murmured as she tapped on the screen.
Kelso rubbed her arm “...I’ll put in my resignation papers when we get back to the office, ma’am. Sorry for letting you all down.”
Athena gave her a smile. “it’s okay, miss Kelso. The investigation’s not over yet…let’s see what we can do, right?”
"I got a little more information from Skye-dono while you were talking," Simon said. "Interestingly, our fellow in the trunk wasn't shot with the same kind of weapon as the unfortunate agents."
Athena gasped deliberately, her hand going to her lips. “Really?? What was the victim shot with?”
She was beginning to have an inkling– and Simon confirmed it.
"Rifle rounds, in fact. Which is fascinating because our third body was also shot at much closer range than the other two."
The cartridges that Kelso had been playing with… were rifle rounds.
Athena tensed, glancing at Simon and Halblicht out of the corner of her eye. She could hear Kelso take a soft intake of breath.
“Well…shit.” she heard Kelso muse.
Simon held up a hand sized portable UV light that he must have gotten from Ema. "Agent Kelso, would you mind if I looked you over. As a formality?"
“I’d mind a lot actually.” Kelso said with a quiet chuckle, her arms crossing over her chest. “...what, do you suspect me or something?”
“It’s just a formality, Agent Kelso.” Athena soothed with a wave of her hand. “...nothing’s going to come up, and we can move on with the investigation.”
"I should probably go over Agent Ash as well, while we're at it," Simon said with that thin, mean smile of his. Athena could feel his rising anxiety.
Halblicht had very carefully and subtly moved closer to Kelso.
“If you must!” Agent Ash chuckled, her hands raising from her hips.
Kelso reached up to grab her sunglasses, pulling them off and into her hands as she held them up. “...alright, fine. Go on. I got nothing to hide.”
Simon stepped over to Agent Ash first, and swept over her with the UV light. "Thank you both."
Agent Ash was patient, winking at Simon as he shined the light over her to no visible reaction.
“If you’d like a closer look, Samurai, just ask after this whole mess gets sorted out.”
Simon flushed and Athena could sense his embarrassment. He shook his head.
"I'm afraid I'm somewhat booked up, Ash-dono. But thank you all the same." He turned toward Kelso. "Agent Kelso– your turn."
Kelso rubbed her thumb along the side of her glasses as she walked towards him, right near the corner, with a lazy smile. “Hope you’re ready for a big surprise…I’m clean as a whistle, sir.”
"You know," Halblicht said, "That saying's always confused me a bit. I don't know why a whistle of all things would be clean in the first place."
Simon huffed a laugh as he shined the UV light over Kelso, carefully and slowly. Athena could sense his deep attention as he held it over, looking for anything amiss.
Athena frowned/ As the UV light went towards her neck, up over her chest, Agent Kelso seemed to fidget with the edge of her glasses all the more.
Action spoke louder than words. It was easier than emotion…just like in the restaurant she let herself move on instinct to hop forward and snatch the glasses out of Kelso’s hand.
“I’ll hold onto those for you, Agent! We don’t want them getting in the way!”
As Kelso turned with a sharp retort on her tongue, the light passed over the inside of her collar– illuminating a small stain across the back of it.
“Hey, give those back, Miss Cyk–”
"Cut yourself shaving this morning, Agent Kelso?" Simon drawled, flashing the light on the drops of blood.
“As a matter of fact I did…” she said with a thin smile. She took the opportunity to hop a few steps away from Simon with a cold look in her grey eyes.
“But I seem to recall…” Sheila mused with a rub of her chin, “that you didn’t have time to even shower this morning, Agent. That’s why you haven’t changed since last night. We kept you pretty busy, after all.”
Kelso's two steps carried her closer to Halblicht's bulky form. He leaned in, peering at her through his amber sunglasses with a thin, cold smile. "Admittedly, your jaw looks clean as a baby's bottom, Agent Kelso. An admirably close shave."
Athena looked up from the mood matrix. “I’m not registering much in the way of emotion, Detective. I’m maybe picking up a little fear, though.”
Kelso’s sleepy, affable demeanor crumpled into a cold stare
“I’m not afraid. As for the shave…” She backed towards Athena instead with a smile Athena knew was faker than all the rest. “I’ve got a steady hand and a good blade. That’s all.”
“...then why’d you cut yourself? And where’s the cut?” Athena asked quietly as Ema and Sheila took the perimeter around her, moving just on the edge of her vision.
"I have a theory, if I may," Simon said. He didn't wait for permission. "I think perhaps that Agent Kelso did in fact follow the other agents. I think perhaps that Agent Kelso was at the scene of this very crime."
“Which leads one to wonder…” Sheila put her fingers to her lips with a smile. “just why she chose to lie about it…my, my…unless…”
Athena nodded at Simon “...it’s a good theory. A solid one that has a…concerning conclusion, non?”
Her fingers tested the edge of the glasses, finding a strange spot where the meal yielded more than it should. Like a switch.
“Bullshit,” Agent Kelso began spinning her gun again around her fingertip, the other hand sticking in her pocket. “I wasn’t there. You’ve got nothing but theory and speculation. I let myself fall behind.”
"Silence, Agent Kelso," Simon said with a thin smirk. "In fact have two pieces of evidence which you are not yet privy to. The first, is that the bullet from the third corpse matches the ammunition that you've got in your hand."
She jolted– and a handful of bullets came tumbling from her fingers to ping upon the ground as she yanked it from her pocket.
“You can’t possibly have done the rifling tests so fast! Just because it’s similar…two of my friends…my comrades…are dead, Prosecutor Blackquill. You can’t possibly think I killed someone” Her voice carried a plaintive note…but Athena still registered nothing but performance to her ears and to the matrix.
Just like the Phantom of the Courtroom before Robert’s true emotions had been drawn forth.
"Silence!" Simon repeated, louder this time. "The second piece of evidence– traces of blood were found in your car. All over the console and passenger seat. Quite a great deal of blood, in fact, which must have been cleaned up in quite a hurry. Much more blood than one would get, cutting oneself shaving."
Kelso jerked back , nearly tripping as her foot stepped atop one of the bullets and caused her to slip…conveniently, Athena noticed, further away from them and towards the car.
She opened her mouth to protest, her eyes brimming with tears.
“I…I…” It was gone in an instant, smoothed out with a neutral sigh of breath as her thumb clicked the safety of her gun.
“Well.” Agent Kelso said blandly with a listless smile. “not much I can say to that, is there?”
"I'm afraid not, agent," Simon said. "Would you like to come quietly for further questioning?"
Sheila had her hand on her hip again, against the grip of her pistol, as she stepped forward.
“It’s in your best interest, sweetie. I told you earlier… I’d know if there were a traitor in the pack. And it’s checkmate.” She smiled wolfishly as she clicked the strap off her holster. “No room to wriggle away now, I’m afraid.”
Athena gasped suddenly, but not at Ash. For the first time, a strong emotion radiated off Kelso. Despair. Sadness, fear. It came in a sudden flicker of emotion that lit up Widget’s screen before the woman smiled with a shrug.
“No can do, friend,” Kelso glanced towards Halblicht. “he knows that’s not an option.”
Before Athena could act on the ping of emotion, Kelso raised her gun in a smooth motion to press it to her own temple.
Three noises split the air at almost the same time.
The cry of a man. The rapport of a gun. And the scream of a hawk.

While procrastinating on fic writing, as one does, I stumbled on this short but hilarious recap of HZGG2, which led me to more hilarious recaps of HZGG1 that you should read if you want a laugh: here
Some choice excerpts that made me laugh, mostly for the ON POINT observations on Er Kang’s drama queen tendencies:
Now, all the hiking and mountain climbing is too much for Ziwei after a while, so she gives up halfway and tells Xiaoyanzi to go ahead without her because she is just slowing them down.
By the way, those dangling hairs on either side of Ziwei’s head — not a good look. In fact, maybe that’s what’s slowing her down.
--
The Fu family gather again to decide what to do. For a head guard and an older brother, Er’kang is pretty hot-headed. He considers taking the matter to light without much reservation. Er’tai has a better idea, why don’t they bring the Yongqi (5th Prince) here and tell him the truth? The chance of people getting beheaded is lower that way.
--
Yongqi and Er’tai come to see Xiaoyanzi again; this time, she admits to lying to the emperor.
Yongqi is like, OH MY GOD What were you thinking? Pack your thing, we’re getting you outta here.
And Er’tai is like, how are we gonna explain to people if they find a princess missing, calm the freak down, you two.
Xiaoyanzi wonders in tears whether the emperor would really execute her if he found out the truth.
YONGQI & ER’TAI: *nod in unison* Yep, girl, he would.
  --
Ziwei is shocked to learn NOW that Xiaoyanzi was shot by an arrow and mortally wounded. She breaks into tears and asks why no one bothered to tell her.
YONGQI: Really? You didn’t know?
ER’TAI: I thought Er’kang told you.
ER’KANG: I thought Er’tai told you.
Yep, so Ziwei beat herself up with worry and torment about Xiaoyanzi for days because these guys forgot to give her the one crucial piece of information in this mystery. By the way, I can understand why Er’tai thought Er’kang already told her, but why would Er’kang think that Er’tai told Ziwei anything at all? When has Er’tai ever hung out with Ziwei?
  --
But even with his panicky earnest confession, Ziwei still says no. Er’kang is a nobleman, and he is not free to arrange his own marriage. It doesn’t matter if he likes her. I’ve got to say that for a fragile and sheltered girl with little life experience, Ziwei is incredibly clear-headed, a lot more than the guys and Xiaoyanzi combined.
  --
He storms away and to Xiaoyanzi, who is throwing a tantrum. She’s angry and still in shock that the emperor could be that scary. After some explanation and feeble reprimanding, the emperor throws in the towel and says Xiaoyanzi can quit her manners classes. This must be his first attempt at any kind of parenting at all. Although, if the teacher is Nanny Rong, I’d say having no education is better.
  --
By the way, I should point out that whenever Ziwei and Erkang talk, above is their favorite position: Ziwei standing in the front looking like someone is dying and Er’kang in the back ready to unleash some passionate declaration no one is ready for.
  --
Er’kang says he is willing to leave everything and run away with her. Ziwei turns that down, saying that it would be irresponsible. Maybe men who abandon duty for romance turn her off. She is her mother’s daughter, after all.
--
When Ziwei is sure she has got the emperor hooked, she throws out one of the things her mother used to say: My mother spent all her life waiting for something that never happened, but she was grateful for it nonetheless; without it, her life would have been meaningless.
EMPEROR: *Why do orphan girls whose moms died tragically keep finding me?*
--
Xiaoyanzi takes this chance to bash unfaithful men. And the emperor is like, yeah yeah you’re still mad about your mom, I said I’m sorry already, what else do you want from me, kid?
--
The emperor adds that since Xiaoyanzi likes the Fu family so much, he can let her have Er’kang. Xiaoyanzi trips and falls at this, and I’m pretty sure Er’kang’s soul gets sucked out of his body for a second.
--
At night, they watch the emperor and Ziwei play chess, which, I guess, is the equivalence of Netflix at this time.
--
Xiaoyanzi still prioritizes shouting at Yongqi and Yongqi kisses her to shut her up. She pushes him aside and hops away. That is the most hilarious attempt to be romantic I’ve ever seen from a male lead. The whole thing is so funny I can’t even fault Yongqi for jumping in like that.
--
The next day, Er’kang is bitter about the fact that the emperor has been tending to Ziwei. You see, he thinks it should be him who sits next to Ziwei right now. Er’kang is like that one drama viewer who refuses to accept that this is a lot more than a romance.

Steven had been in the dark about you for a while now. He knew you were hiding something from him, a secret that was eating you from the inside as time passed. But he didn’t dare to ask you, too afraid you would say something that could bring down his whole world.
Marc had Layla, while he only had you. If you decided to leave him—No, he couldn’t be this negative about your relationship, maybe it wasn’t that you wanted to leave. But ever since that incident with Jake, you’ve been different.
A part of him assumed Layla might be the key. After all, the two of you spent quite a lot of time together, she surely knew if something was bothering you. But when he asked her, she only told him to ask you for details. “There’s nothing to worry about, but you should ask her,” she said.
Needless to say, it didn’t make him feel any better.
“What’s going on with you lately? I’ve been trying to be patient, I swear I did, but I can’t take it any longer,” he once blurted out after an evening out.
You looked guilty, as if you’d been caught in a lie. You opened your mouth, giving him hope that you would finally give him the explanation he’d been dying to hear. But you changed your mind and bit on your lower lip instead of saying anything.
“Y/N, I’m begging you, talk to me.”
“I’m pregnant!” you finally spoke up.
Pregnant? He kept repeating the word in his head, having a hard time processing that he might have heard you just right. If it was true, it meant his life would change forever. And for the first time it would change for the better. “I’m going to be a father?” he asked hesitantly. You nodded, and he immediately pulled you into a tight hug. “This is fantastic! I’m so happy. How long have you known?”
“I found out about two weeks ago,” you replied with a sigh.
But while he was ecstatic, you didn’t seem happy at all. Steven tilted his head as he watched you with a frown. Why were you so grim? “And why haven’t you told me?”
“Because it’s complicated.”
“Why would it be complicated?”
“Because we’re not alone in this,” you finally told him. As you took a step back, he found himself standing in the same spot with his hands awkwardly falling to his side. “Sure, Layla was happy, but we have no idea what Marc is going to say. You share the same body after all,” you pointed out with a desperate look on your face.
Steven shook his head and quickly leaped over to you to put a hand on your shoulder and make you look at him. “It’s gonna be okay,” he told you with a smile.
“Yeah, but… I don’t know. And what about Jake?”
Steven’s fist clenched upon hearing his alter’s name. “Let’s not worry about him either,” he managed to say. “You know what? Let’s celebrate tonight!”
You looked unsure for a moment. “What’s the plan?” you asked.
“Hmm… Dinner? Maybe a movie?”
“Sounds good.”
Then Steven moved his hand from your shoulder to your jaw and leaned a little closer. “Or we could order food and stay here. In the bedroom, preferably,” he suggested as he placed a soft kiss on your lips.
“I vote for this one.”
“Yeah?” You nodded as you flashed a bright grin at him. “I love you.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed him, getting lost in the sensation right away. “I love you too,” you breathed when you pulled away for a moment.
Steven was happy to have you like this again, looking happy and confident about your relationship. This kiss was full of love, he could feel it, which was in stark contrast with the kisses of the past few weeks. Those felt like you were only kissing him because you had to, because as his girlfriend this was something he expected from you. But now it was easy to tell how you truly felt about him and it made him let out a sigh of relief when he took a step back, took your hand, and spun you around.
“I can’t believe I’ll have a child. What would you prefer, a boy or a girl?” he asked as he swept a strand of hair behind your ear.
“A girl,” you replied without thinking.
“Me too. I would spoil her. She would be daddy’s little princess.”
You kissed him again then rested your head on his shoulder. “You’ll be a great father.”
“You think so?”
“Steven, you’re the sweetest, most caring person I’ve ever met. Of course you’re gonna be an excellent parent,” you told him seriously.
He could hide the smile that crept on your lips. It was so exciting, such a nice surprise after everything he’d been through with almost dying and finding out the truth about Marc’s past. But his smile faded when he heard you laugh. “Why are you laughing?” he asked with a confused look on his face.
“It’s just that you seem so happy.”
“Because I am happy. Why wouldn’t I be? I have a beautiful, smart fiancée and we’ll have a child together. My life is nice,” he admitted before kissing the crown of your head.
You let out a quiet chuckle as you took a step back and looked at him. He was the man you wanted to spend the rest of your life with, you knew that now. But sadly, the man you were looking at wasn’t Steven anymore. That was the expression Jake usually had on his face when something was bothering him, when he was upset about something or someone.
And now the reason for this feeling was probably you. The thought made you gulp loudly and take a few steps back to build a safe distance. Jake didn’t even try to stop you, he just watched you with the same stern look that made you nervous.
“You’re pregnant?” he asked slowly.
“Jake, please, let me explain,” you instinctively said, hoping you could calm him down a bit.
“How could you not tell me?”
“I didn’t know how.”
Jake’s chest rose and fell as he took a deep breath then exhaled slowly. He had a hard time keeping his patience. “I’ll have a child,” he said as if he was just testing the sentence, trying to accept that these words were indeed true.
But you couldn’t let him get used to the idea so easily. While you let Steven believe it was definitely his child, you couldn’t allow Jake to think the same way. He knew about Steven so he had to know about the possibility of not being the father. “I don’t know which one of you fronted when I conceived.”
“Does it matter in this case?” You should have expected this. You should have expected Jake to ignore it completely. “I might not let Steven and Marc front again for a while,” he suddenly stated.
“Don’t be a dick,” you said without thinking.
“It’s not about me being a dick, it’s about you being safe. There’s a difference.”
Shaking your head, you let out a long sigh. “Since they’re not serving Khonshu anymore, I’m sure we’ll be fine,” you said calmly, even letting a small smile creep on your lips.
“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” Jake noted.
“Why?” He remained silent. It wasn’t a good sign, he was hiding something, you could tell that from the almost guilty expression he had on his face. “Jake, why?”
“Because I’m serving Khonshu.”
“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” you muttered while giving him a disappointed look.
Jake shook his head as he took a hesitant step closer to you. “It’s true. But don’t tell Marc and Steven about it. They can’t find out,” he warned you.
“Jake, you’re putting them in danger.”
“I have it under control.”
“Do you?”
He buried a hand in his hair and bit on his lower lip to keep himself from saying the first thing that came to his mind. Whatever he was thinking about, it couldn’t be good, you knew it. “You know, it says a lot about our relationship,” he suddenly told you bitterly.
His words took you by surprise. “What do you mean?”
“You’re worried about them, but not me,” Jake explained.
“You can protect yourself.”
“If anything happens, I’ll front and protect them like I always do.” You had never seen him be this… angry. Or was he really angry? No, it had to be something else you couldn’t quite understand yet. He took a deep breath to calm himself and put up his hands. “You should move here so I could keep an eye on you too,” he said.
“Layla and Marc wouldn’t be happy, they need their own space. And how do I explain this sudden idea to move in together to Steven? He’s already suspicious.”
“Tell him about me.”
You gave him a surprised look. “Tell him what?” you asked, deep down hoping he didn’t mean what you thought he meant by this.
“That we keep talking and that I want to protect you and the baby,” Jake explained.
Oh, okay, this wasn’t so bad. Maybe Jake just knew about the baby and decided to front again in your presence after a long time. But something still wasn’t right. “And why do you care so much about a kid that’s not yours?” you asked.
“Because it might be mine.”
“I can’t tell him that,” you exclaimed angrily. “He can’t find out that—It would break his heart.”
Jake opened his mouth to say something, but in the end he decided to stay silent. Maybe he didn’t want to fight now. Then, as if you weren’t in the middle of an important conversation, he decided to give control back to Steven. Just like that, without putting up a fight. You didn’t even have to ask him to do it. This was new. Jake usually came and went as he wished, barely caring about things like you being on a date night with Steven.  And now… It was odd to say the least.
But when Steven flashed his adorable smile at you, you couldn’t help but push these thoughts away. You shouldn’t worry about him, you should use this opportunity to spend some quality time with Steven, to celebrate your pregnancy.
“Why are you looking at me like this?” he suddenly asked.
Shaking your head, you quickly closed the distance between you and wrapped your arms tightly around his body. “Just promise you won’t ever leave me,” you muttered into his chest.
Steven let out a heartfelt laugh as he patted your head. “I would never do that. Why are you suddenly talking about such things? Why would I leave you?”
“I don’t know.”
But it was a lie, you knew perfectly well what came over you. Jake was still serving that stupid bird, putting the whole system in danger. Putting Steven in danger. How could you be okay knowing something could happen to him? You almost lost him when he was in Egypt, you couldn’t risk losing him again.
Not when you weren’t the only one who waited for him back home.

It’s been (nearly) two weeks! How are my alpha 4 alpha boys doing? Tbh I was kinda shocked when Garcia was using words like broke up with but I know that’s cause we’re in Eddie’s pov but aw he thought he got dumped. Is Eddie gonna accept his relationship with Garcia or is he gonna push him away some more? I have a feeling Garcia will decide to walk away if Eddie doesn’t accept their relationship. I love watching how assertive and confident Garcia has gotten since part 1. But damn I mean this in the best way but you kinda tricked me with this series. I thought it was just gonna be some pwp and then my heart got involved. So that was a good one. Thank you 💛
I'm sorry babe, you sent this to me a month ago, but I've been suffering through the worst possible writer's block and elite-related depression. So here's a very short little update, in an attempt to bust through. 😬
[one ] [two] [three] [four] [five] [six]
Seven
The kid don't spend the night anymore. That's okay. Eddie's got a lotta practice sleeping alone, and it's better, anyway. He don't have to worry about snoring, or farting in his sleep, or whether he keeps the room too cold. It's better, probably, that the kid doesn't stay anymore, just slides outta bed the moment Eddie's knot goes down and leaves.
It's better too that he doesn't bother Eddie backstage, either. Eddie never sees him anymore unless he specifically seeks him out, which sometimes he does, just cuz. Garcia's usually with the Private Party kids, or Bowens and Hook. Not so much with the 2.0 dingdongs anymore. Eddie wants to know why—wants to know what Garcia's thinking. Wants to know if Garcia's gonna join BCC, why he looks so much older lately, where he goes when he leaves Eddie's room.
It's fucking stupid shit. What the fuck should Eddie care? Garcia's not one of his friends. He's not one of Eddie's ride-or-die boys. What does Eddie care if Garcia goes to Yuta's room next, or out to party or anywhere at all?  Since when has Eddie ever worried about anyone's business but his own? Fuckin' get it together, he tells himself with disgust.
He's backstage, sitting on a whole stack of folded tables, watching the guys play basketball, when Ruby comes and sits next to him.  "Yo," he says, and steals a Dorito from the open bag in her hand.  "You go to Medical yet?"
"Yeah," she says, touching the bridge of her nose. "Sampson says it looks good. I think he's gonna clear me soon."
"Good," he says. "They need you out there. They're dying without you."
She scoffs a little but bumps her shoulder against his, and they lapse into silence. Monkey steals the ball from one of the Gunn kids, and whooping, sinks a basket.
"You ever—" Eddie starts, and then just as abruptly cuts himself off, shaking his head.
"No, hey," Ruby says, nudging him. "What?"
He squints, cracks his knuckles, then tilts his head to crack his neck a little too. "You ever heard," he said slowly, "of alphas being able to bond with each other? Like they can with omegas?"
There's silence for a few moments, and Eddie drums his heel rhythmically on the tables they're sitting on. He wishes he didn't say anything.
"Like," she said, eventually. "The biting thing? The whole—hormone exchange—thing?"
Eddie scowls. "I was just asking. I ain't a doctor or whatever. I was just curious if like, it can happen to people. Other kinds of people. Like, if you spent a lot of time with another alpha, if you could accidentally bond. If that's possible or whatever."
"Eddie," Ruby says, her voice infinitely kind. "You know it's okay if you fell in love with him, right?"
"Oh, eat shit," he snarls, and stands up abruptly, almost upsetting the whole stack. "Get the fuck outta here with that shit. You don't know what you're talking about."
He's storming through the backstage, heading for the locker room when his shoulder smacks right into someone. Fucking Sammy, with his stupid shit eating grin. "Hey—" Sammy says, "Watch where you—"
"Shut the fuck up," he says. "I fucking heard your little promo. If you ever talk about me like that on television, I'll fucking—"
Sammy looks surprised and confused for a second, before coming back at Eddie, blustering.  Eddie's not even listening to what he's saying, he's just mad, he's mad at Sammy, at Ruby, at—
Then he doesn't have to worry about what anyone's saying to him, because he's on the first plane home.  Goodbye. Another Eddie special.
It's good to be home. He spends the first week being a fucking nightmare. There's an old picnic table in his backyard, cracked from when one of his idiot cousins had filmed some fucking tiktok dance on it. Eddie cracks it some more, and then spends a satisfying amount of time smashing it into a heap of jagged pieces.
The rest of the time he spends flat on his back on the couch, trying desperately to turn his brain off.
What are you doing? He asks himself at 3am. What are you doing? Eddie, what the fuck are you doing?  You gonna fuck up the only job you've ever loved? The only time you've ever done something you're proud of? You gonna be that guy again?  You gonna screw it all up again? For what?  Just because—
Instinctively, he jerks away from the thought, flinching away from the hot stove. Think about something else, he tells himself. Think about what you're gonna say to Tony, to CD, to Sammy—
Eddie's a lot of things. A fuck-up, a bullshitter, a piece of shit. But he isn't a coward. He never has been. He's never run from nobody and nothing, even when he really should have. But, he realizes, pacing his living room floor as 3AM slides into 4, he's been running from this.
So okay. Okay Eddie, you can think about it.  It's okay if you fell in love with him. Okay Ruby, but he didn't. That's not what this is. They’re fucking. That's what this is. That's all this is.
Unbidden, he remembers standing in the shower after the match with Chris, remembers Danny's hands sweeping over his skin, how Eddie had wanted to lean back against him and relax. But he hadn't. He didn't do that shit. He wasn't made for that. And anyway, that's not even what Danny wanted from him anyway.  Garcia wanted an alpha, wanted someone to hold him down and make him take it. What Ruby was saying—that wasn't—none of that was—
He jumps when a door slams next door. The neighbor's coming down the walk whistling, tossing his bags in the cab of his truck. The sun's rising in the distant horizon behind the buildings.  Eddie can't stand a single second of it anymore.
He goes to bed.

warnings: a few swears, bucky being an indecisive fuck, a lot of establishing storyline (i swear things pick up FAST after this and there’s so much more bucky x reader)

all your life, you’ve never seen a woman
taken by the wind
would you stay if she promised you heaven?
will you ever win?
tony stark’s office was eccentric, to say the least. you’d walked in and seen him laying on his stomach atop an expensive looking rug, rubbing his temple and immediately after, downing a redbull. when he heard you and wanda enter, he jumped from his position to come shake your hand. he had a firm grip, the kind that only people who are completely assured in themselves have.
“so! you’ve made it to our abode without anybody dying!” tony threw up jazz hands. “yay!” wanda smiled awkwardly and patted your shoulder, whispering “good luck” before stranding you with the unpredictable billionaire. tony motioned to a couple of brightly colored beanbag chairs in a corner of the office, and you took a seat across from him. you wondered how much they cost.
“with all due respect—which i know sounds like i’m discrediting how much respect you deserve and that’s not my intention at all; i just can’t think of a better phrasing on the spot—” you fumbled, feeling a pit of anxiety building in your stomach as you looked past tony’s tinted glasses into his emotionless eyes. “why am i even here? i mean, your driver cheery-”
“happy.”
“-your driver happy kind of just told me to get in and then flashed me a business card and then i was semi-kidnapped to somewhere on the outskirts of the state and you have to admit, that’s pretty creepy.”
tony finally cracked a smile, pushing his glasses down his nose and making eye contact with you over the frames. “i see… yeah, i didn’t think about that one. FRIDAY! make a note that next time we try and contact someone, don’t have happy pick them up in a black limo. try… uh, an ice cream truck?” he looked back at you after finishing his request. “so yeah, about this whole thing.
“i’m not really sure why you’re here either. don’t get me wrong, i’m sure you’re super cool and stuff, and i’m already loving your vibes—nice shirt, by the way—but one of our agents noticed a strange pattern in… how should i say this… accidents, where the only constant factor was you. don’t worry, we weren’t stalking you or anything. i mean, we didn’t go as far as investigating your social security number, but yeah, we’ve got quite a bit of dirt on ‘ya.”
at the sight of your face and your slightly opened mouth, tony backtracked. “i’m kidding! totally joking. we did track your life all the way from your hometown, though. i’m sure you’re sick of people coming at you with stuff like this, but i promise you, we’re not here to interrogate or arrest you or anything like that. fuck the police.
you might know this guy, bruce banner? tall, green, the hulk?” you nodded, still shellshocked, and tony continued. “yeah, well sometimes he’s also dr. banner, a scrawny, nerdy dude with lab goggles. he’s actually been studying the balance of chance; why are some people born into power and some into poverty, or if somebody is predisposed to have a preference for pineapple on pizza, etc. to be honest, i don’t really get it, but he’s fascinated by your life. he said something like ‘genetically designed’ and then ‘reciprocity of circumstance’ and yada yada yada. so, what i’m trying to say is, do you want to stay with us for a bit? banner swears there’s something more to you than just ‘bad luck,’ and i’m inclined to believe the same. if you don’t have enough incentive, i can pay you! obviously, i wouldn’t make you pay rent, but i’m sure we could figure out an interest rate for some sort of allowance. or, if you’d prefer, i can do a single deposit, but i’m sure pepper can figure out a steady payment system or-”
“yes.” you interrupt. “yes, i’ll do it. you don’t have to convince me. it’s a win-win. i get to live in a billionaire-funded complex and you get to run your little theories by me. i do have one request though: can i have toasted almond ice cream? that’s my one demand. other than that, when can i move in?”
tony stares at you for half a second and blinks incredulously. then, he laughs. “i like you! oh, i like you a lot. everyone in this tower needs to loosen up a bit. it’s been forever since someone’s come to me with a demand like that. you know, the last person i spoke with tried to get me to sign a multi-million dollar contract? it was 8 in the morning! they scheduled to meet so early and then they expected me to read all those words? puh-lease. they’re already lucky i hit the snooze button once.”
tony cleared his throat, tapping around on his watch. he swiped until making a final definitive tap which called up a translucent projection in front of him. zooming in and reading and doing things outside of your technological understanding, he nodded with satisfaction.
“right! you can move in, like, right now if you want. i can send happy to get whatever stuff you want, and i’m sure wanda or someone else would be more than happy to give you a tour. FRIDAY? make sure wanda’s still available. if not, pester steve next.” tony tilted his head towards you, examining the newest resident of the avengers compound. “welcome home. we’re doing game night at 9 today, if you want to join. dress code is patterned pajama pants.”
with that, he ushered you out of his office towards the elevator that you had originally taken. wanda was nowhere in sight, and you cursed yourself for not establishing a clearer plan with her. where the fuck were you supposed to go? sure, you were technically part of the compound now, but nobody else knew that. you prayed that you wouldn’t be shot by some SHIELD agent or avenger who thought you were an intruder.
the elevator ride was much shorter than you had hoped, and once the doors opened, you were no longer safe and hidden in your bubble. the floor that you had been on previously, with the gym, was deserted. after exploring, you found that it was mostly comprised of spare training equipment, a couple of changing rooms and showers, and a kitchenette stocked with things like protein powder and kale and things you’d never eat.
the next few floors yielded little promise. there were a couple of trainees who looked at you funny and then a conference room where people in business clothes were aggressively “negotiating” across a table. it took four floors before you found wanda.
“wanda! holy shit, where were you? i just met tony and he’s… so wow, and i’m so confused and lost and-”
wanda flipped around, abandoning her conversation with a silver-haired man who looked at the new interrupter as well. she beamed at the sight of you.
“you’re back! FRIDAY told me how it went; i’m so happy for you! i wish—and i mean i really, really wish—i could finish that tour, but pietro and i—he’s my brother,” wanda stopped and shoved pietro’s head playfully. “—are going to pick up a present for steve. it’s his 108th birthday next week and we’re throwing him a surprise party, and now that you’re here, you can totally help out! it’ll be so great. don’t mention it to him, though!”
you chewed your lip nervously. knowing your luck, if the surprise party managed to stay a surprise at all, the candles would probably explode or the presents would go missing or some other very unfortunate event. you didn’t tell that to wanda though.
“anyways, steve knows you’re here and he’ll probably come around in a few min- oh, there he is!” wanda waved energetically to the smiling supersoldier, who stuck out a hand. unlike tony, steve’s handshake was strong, but it was a comforting squeeze as he shook your hand a few times with respect.
“hi. steve rogers. it’s nice to meet you; you’re our new resident, right?” steve’s smile was bright and comforting, and you quickly fell into a comfortable conversation with him.
“that’s me! honestly, i- well, this is all so… new? terrifying? potentially a horrible idea?” you shook your head with a breathless laugh. “but i’m so grateful for this opportunity. i’m not totally sure what opportunity that is, actually, but i figure there must be something special going on if i’ve been invited here.”
steve laughed. “you know, i think you’re going to fit right in. we could use a fresh face and some new perspective around here; there haven’t been many global level threats recently and we’re all getting bored.”
you looked at him, perplexed.
“just kidding.” he sighed, surveying the room before looking back at you. “i’m supposed to give you a tour, right? i’m thinking we can check out the rooms first, before everyone gets back from training and starts getting cranky.”
steve’s bedroom was one of the neatest you’d ever seen. well, it was pretty simple in the first place, but his sheets were well tucked and his desk organized, with small books lined neatly on the shelf above and paintbrushes displayed in an orderly fashion on the wall.
“i’m gonna be honest, it looks like a display house in here.” you took a couple tentative steps around the room as steve pointed out some of the standard amenities.
“we’ve all got these bathrooms; they’re not anything fancy, but there’s a shower—the water pressure’s good, if i do say so—and you can find bigger things on the 10th floor where the gym is; there’s a spa-like place there. it’s got a great hot tub.
“i get pretty good sunlight but most rooms have at least one window, and technically there’s ‘standard furniture’ but basically everyone replaces it with their own-”
a loud crashing of steve’s bedroom door made you jump and steve froze mid-monologue.
“it’s you!” you met the same blue eyes from the gym, the eyes that were full of apology after slamming you into a wall—which you were still sore from, thank you very much.
“me? what’s- oh. yeah, it’s me,” the man scratched his neck shyly. “yeah, i’m bucky. barnes. sorry about that, again.”
steve looked at bucky with a hint of annoyance, but couldn’t help but brighten at his friend’s appearance. “bucky, we’re kind of in the middle of something.”
bucky raised his eyebrows in mock surprise. he cracked his neck, and it was as if that flipped a switch into an entirely new persona. “is that so? you bringing home girls this early now?” bucky chuckled, a deep, rich sound. “i hope i didn’t interrupt anything… intimate.” he smirked, watching a sly stretch of pink paint itself across steve’s cheeks. that’s what you get for your comment at the gym.
“n-no, we’re not- no, i’m just giving a tour. this is our new compound resident, so behave yourself, buck.” steve shot bucky a warning look, not interested in throwing you headfirst into bucky’s antics after you’d just absorbed the news.
“can’t i tag along, stevie?” bucky drawled, stalking closer to you. far gone was the man you’d met at the gym, flustered and off-guard. this bucky barnes was cocky, seductive, and straightforward. his chest was only a few inches from yours and he looked down upon your confused expression with amusement. “i can’t let a pretty bird like this get away from me, can i?” bucky broke his gaze and his attention snapped back to steve, where they exchanged a silent conversation you couldn’t understand.
“alright, bucky. you can join us, but no distractions, okay? i want to be done before dinner.”
she is like a cat in the dark
and then she is the darkness
she rules her life like a fine skylark
when the sky is starless
“so what’s up with barnes?” natasha was leaned over the counter gossiping with steve.
“i don’t know, he’s been so out of sorts today. you know how he can be around women, but it’s kind of like whiplash. you should’ve seen him this morning, nat. he slammed the gym door on her and freaked out, but then all of a sudden he’s hitting on her in my own bedroom!” steve groaned, hiding his face in his hands. “i mean, she is quite attractive, but-”
“but what, steve?” bucky had snuck in just in time to hear the end of steve’s declaration. “but you want me to stop? you’re the one who encouraged this.”
steve sighed. “i wasn’t expecting you to go ‘all out.’ you seemed to like her, that’s all. but i don’t understand why you jump between personalities around her; it’s a little unnerving, buck.”
“i’m not- what are you talking about? she just caught me off guard a couple of times, that’s all. it’s not as if i like her, or anything. she’s just… interesting, that’s all. i mean, apart from tony, we know nothing about her. am i not allowed to be curious?”
natasha snorted. “you’re not curious, bucky. you’re into her. there’s a clear difference, and you know it. drop the whole ‘you’re so mysterious and i want to get to know you’ act. that’s you. she’s adjusting to living with the most infuriating people on this planet, and i don’t care if you’re going through a personality crisis right now, but she doesn’t need to be pestered by your womanizing.”
“natasha’s right, bucky. you have every right to feel how you do, but right now she needs consistency. you have to make up your mind about her. are you curious, or are you willing to commit to really liking her?”
bucky examined steve’s face but found no trace of humor. consistency? i can do consistency.

lyric explanation:
all your life, you’ve never seen a woman taken by the wind
the goddess rhiannon rides a white horse with such speed that nobody can catch up to her. a prince falls in love with her and chases her for days, before calling out and asking her to stop. rhiannon stops and tells him “gladly, and it would’ve been much easier if you had asked sooner.”
would you stay if she promised you heaven? will you ever win?
in celtic mythology, a god cannot marry a human or they will lose their supernatural powers. (will reader sacrifice her independence and comfort to embrace an unknown and a relationship with bucky?)
she is like a cat in the dark, and then she is the darkness
a black cat, associated with bad luck, is almost invisible in the dark. but black cats are not always a negative association; cats are also a symbol of the goddess and represent independence. the blackness of the cat bleeds into the darkness of the night; even unintentionally, the cat cannot help but influence the world around it.

don’t worry. she’s pretty mild compared to 🤫
mommy issues!JK
“ew, you’re no fun” chaeyoung groans but he’s definitely ‘packing’ under there. just his toned chest was enough to get chaeyoung wet and it makes her want to see just how big his package really is. jungkook is so fine in her eyes and is definitely a bottom because there’s no way a guy with those kind of eyes top women but you’re a bottom too. she so desperately wants to top the both you and jungkook but he’s set in stone about making you his. fine, if he wants to play that game, she can play too.
“that’s a shame. good luck winning her heart, i guess” chaeyoung shrugs “a little insider, y/n is bisexual. likes girls and boys but likes girls a little bit more. which means, i’ve got a better chance at scoring her than you do”
the door opens and finally you return with little seol on your hip with a bandaid on his knee. “sorry, mr. jeon” you apologize “seol had fell and scrapped his knee pretty bad but you handled it like a big boy, didn’t you?” seol nods his head before getting down and jumping into his father’s arms. you mouth a ‘thank you’ to chaeyoung who nods her head and leaves you alone with jungkook who looks to be in shock at the revelation he found out about you.
just when he begged for you to not be into girls, turns out you are. he still has a fair shot at your heart but chaeyoung said you like girls more. he wonders if alina knew about this but she probably didn’t. she would’ve warned him about this, about your preference.
“why don’t you just come over and we can talk about your dinner there? i keep forgetting we’re neighbors sometimes” you say but you have no idea just what the meant to jungkook. not only did you accept his invite and agreed to be his date to this dinner but you’re inviting him to your home too? he can’t let that surprise get him down, he’s going to win your heart one way or another, even if it means making some enemies along the way.
“i gotta get back to work, sorry. bye you guys” you say as you ruffle seol’s hair and watch the duo leave your classroom. once they’re out of your classroom, once again chaeyoung comes in to bother you and you’ve got a feeling about what she’s about to tell you.
“let me guess, you got his number?” you ask your curious co-teacher who is probably dying to know what you and jungkook talked about but you remember chaeyoung and jungkook being alone too.
“i wish. did you get his?”
“no”
“then what were the two of you talking about? or did you finally fuck him?”
“wha-no! we just talked about seol’s behavior, that’s all”
“that’s all? sure, y/n. you know he’s got that crazy baby mama drama, right?”
wrong.
“yeah i know. that’s why i’m steering clear, remember? and you should too”
“thought you didn’t care if i wanted him?”
“i don’t but i doubt you’ll get a chance since seol wouldn’t even let you put a bandaid on him”
you joke but before chaeyoung could reply, you take her hand and lead her back outside, thanking the teacher who stepped in to watch both of your classes. you know you didn’t make a promise to jungkook, but you will not tell anyone what he told you. it’s private information that he trusted you with and you feel as though you owe him that privacy.
you’re a teacher that cares about their students after all but now you’re a teacher that cares about their students and well-acquainted with a parent.
once the day is finally done, you bid all your fellow teachers a goodnight and head to your apartment where you can finally relax and breathe.
~🫧
He cannot believe that you invited him over to dinner. Jungkook and Seol do stop for ice cream because he’s a little stubborn just like his daddy.
And frankly jungkook cannot stop thinking about the fact that you held his hand, you even intertwined your hands together- IT IS THE BEST DAY EVER.
He’s forgotten all about chaeyoung & Nara.
And just like that once they get home after a little trip to the grocery store, Seol has started with his tales of you.
And like always, Jungkook doesn’t mind at all. “Yeah? You put a flower in her hair?” He can’t help but Wonder how you must be looking with that beautiful hair cut of yours. you’re so different and that’s what attracts him to you.
“Daddy!!! you said you would be going to dinner with Ms yn??? Can I come too???” As jungkook finishes bathing his little kid, his question catches him off guard.
he’s a little confused, because he’s not sure if it would be good to bring him along.
One step at a time and he doesn’t want to overwhelm you. “Umm… how ‘bout you stay at uncle eunwoo’s for a little bit? Gonna play with areum?! it’ll be fun.” He knows that you’re a little bit disappointed with the four year old. And he doesn’t want you to think that you’re doing something wrong by agreeing to go on a dinner date with him and and inviting him to your home.
Seol pouts but he loves to be at his uncles place, “okay daddy- you can play with mommy instead.” Seol says a weird sentence that he cannot help but laugh.
Oh, he’s so excited to meet you for dinner tonight. You must be exhausted because handling kids isn’t easy and he knows that his is a very naughty one.
Also, he’s a little tense about his encounter with chaeyoung earlier, because she’s got her eyes set on you.. he doesn’t like her at all… what if she steals you away from him? She say you like girls more than guys..
He’s so sad, but he won’t give up. He will win your heart regardless of your preference. He knows he can.
Jungkook knows he’s going to buy you a beautiful dress, for the dinner date next weekend with some accessories. He hopes that you won’t deny. “Okay champ! Let’s get you to eat something.” He finishes powdering Seol up and soon he’s running to the dining room.
Jungkook runs after him and he swears to God that his kid is really a handful.
_____
It’s 9 PM right now and he has just come back from dropping Seol to eunwoo’s place, and the guy insisted that jungkook stay over and get a few drinks for him but he told him about the dinner with you tonight and it is safe to say that Eunwoo gave him his blessings.
Even though it is school day tomorrow, but, he will be back to pick Seol up once he’s done with the dinner. And now he’s back on his way to the apartment complex.
Jungkook did dress up quite nicely, because he really wants to impress you, he does take care of himself and his appearance, because he wants you to find him attractive, do you find him attractive? You’re just such a professional with him- he doesn’t think that you like him like that.
You definitely won’t date him. That makes him a little sad, but then he always gets what he wants. And he will have you.
Soon, The tall man gets off his car and he’s wearing a nice shirt with jeans, he is sure you’ll notice his tattoos today because it’s not a full sleeve.
He wonders if you like guys with tattoos? What do you like in guys? He doesn’t know… but he does know that you were in a really bad relationship a few years back.. that’s all he knows because alina told him and.. it was really bad.
But he’s gonna prove to you that he’s not like your ex-boyfriend, he would never ever make you sad- just by her expressions when she was telling him about your ex, she looked pretty horrified.
Even though when he’s in the elevator, he’s nervous. You get him so nervous. And the funny thing is that he’s pretty confident around women, but ever since he saw you, he is a changed man
It takes all of him to not run to your door, and he slowly walks towards your apartment. Knocking gently, Jungkook eagerly waits for you to open it.
He hopes that you’ll give him something to eat because he really wants to taste how you cook, you do seem really domestic, so he’s a little curious.
