Genshin 4.2 Trailer (Spoilers)
The Genshin 4.2 trailer is HERE, and as some might expect, I have THOUGHTS.
ESPECIALLY about the opening sequence. So, let's get into it, shall we?
Tumblr media
"According to the judgment of the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale, the Hydro Archon is to be punished via... the death sentence." — Neuvillette
This voiceline, paired with the shots of Furina silently weeping atop her lonely throne, paint a bleak picture. The Hydro Archon, the God of Justice herself, is on the stand, and her own divine device has declared that the only punishment suitable for her crime is execution. But, how did we get here?
Honestly, neither the trailer nor the information we have from the previous Acts can adequately answer this question. From her inaction to her frivolity, her crime could be anything. Nonetheless, limited information has never stopped me from speculating!
I think Furina's crime is related to the "sin" referenced in Lyney's explanation about the prophecy:
"...that every person in Fontaine is born with 'sin'. No matter how the Nation of Justice holds trial after trial, this sin cannot be absolved."
Tumblr media
So, what is this "sin" Lyney mentions?
Again, there's no real way of knowing for certain. However, given the plethora of Biblical references throughout Fontaine, I think it's fair to assume that the "sin" referenced in Fontaine might draw its roots from Christianity. Or, to be more precise, the "Original Sin."
While the term "Original Sin" was only coined around the 3rd century (by a Augustine of Hippo), its essence has been consistently referenced for much longer. In Genesis 3, in a line from Psalm 51:5, and in Paul's Epistle to the Romans. However, the references I want to concentrate on are in Genesis 3—Adam's and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
Tumblr media
In Genesis 2-3, God creates Adam and Eve and places them into an idyllic garden. He only has one rule they must follow: do not eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. However, as most of us know, a serpent tempts Eve to eat the fruit, and she shares this fruit with Adam. Consequently, God banishes them from the Garden of Eden forever. This action, this disobedience, is largely considered the "Original Sin" by Christians and historians alike.
With that in mind, I think the "sin" mentioned by Lyney is disobedience.
As such, I believe Egeria (the previous Hydro Archon) knowingly disobeyed either Celestia or even the very laws of Teyvet to protect Fontaine. However, with Egeria gone, Furina must now bear the weight of her predecessor's decisions—and face the consequences too.

Adam, the first man, was created toward the end of creation. God sculpted Adam’s form from dust or mud, and personally breathed life into him. As the first human, Adam named the various animals that walked throughout Eden. Though his life was luxurious it wasn’t without sadness, as Adam felt he was alone. So in his sleep, God took one of his ribs and used it to create Eve, the first woman. As Eve was his other half the two almost instantly fell in love. However, one day the two conversed with a snake within Eden, the snake tricked them into eating a forbidden fruit that contained the knowledge of all things evil. God punished the two lovers by kicking them out of heaven for disobeying the word of God as well as punishing the snake who tricked them, forcing him to crawl upon his stomach for all eternity.
The story of Adam in genesis is one of the most prolific stories told among abrahamic religions. A version of the garden of Eden exists across all Abrahamic denominations, in Gnosticism the garden of Eden is put into a positive light as an attempt by God to liberate Adam and Eve’s spirits from the cage of the physical put on them by the tyrannical spirit Yaldabaoth. In Islam the pair are forgiven by God once they apologize for their actions, God as thanks sent down the black stone and had heaven’s angels bow down to the first humans. In some non-canonical traditions, Adam’s first wife was Lilith, after forcing herself onto Adam she was banished from Eden, ultimately turning into a demon. In some traditions the original Adam was thought to be intersex, possessing traits of both males and females, but was later split into the Adam and Eve known today. The actual historicity of the events in Eden is still a highly debated subject among believers. Some contest it actually happened physically, some say it happened spiritually not actually taking place on earth, and some say that the story is a metaphor for mankind’s inherit hubris.

She was created for Adam as his new wife because the first wife was banished from the Garden of Eden for disobeying Adam.
Eve was sent to help and accompany Adam and was told to not eat from the tree of knowledge.
Adam & Eve were enticed by the serpent (The Devil) to eat the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge.
As a result, both Adam and Eve were banished from paradise and became mortal. They were sent down to earth to live their mortal lives and to seek progression and eventually die at some point.

The Garden of Eden Explanation
Series Masterlist: The Garden of Eden Series
Warning: Read After Part Two: Reflection!! SPOILERS AHEAD.
Hey guys, it’s Emilie (@evandearest)! So I’ve just decided to pop in here and make a post about my current James March x reader series, The Garden of Eden. This is just something that I’ve decided to do just to clear things up, both for any readers and for myself <3.
This series was requested by @etoile-writings , who is now one of my good friends here on tumblr :). This post will contain spoilers, so if you haven’t read part one and two I suggest you do! After I finish writing the entire series, I will do a separate review post to explain the symbolism and references in depth with the entire story. This post will just contain an explanation for the concepts and symbolism in the events so far.
JUXTAPOSITION:
The original request was juxtaposition, which is basically just an idea: the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. It’s just simply a comparison - a contrast between two objects. In this story’s case, the two things are the reader and James. The contrast is revealed as the story goes, but it’s basically the fact that the reader constantly looks at everything in a religious view, while James is completely against religion, as we’ve seen in the show. This will get more prevalent in part three, which at this point in time is still being wrote.
READER’S DARKNESS:
As the story goes on, this will be revealed further, but there has already been multiple instances in which the reader has seemed passive towards violence/physical hurting, the seriousness of the situation seeming to go over her head; no empathy shown. This occurred in two instances: when James killed her husband, and when the man in the hotel was in pain. As I said, this will be explored further, but is to be kept in mind, as it ties in with the juxtaposition concept.
WHITE ROSES:
Now let’s talk about the flowers, which were included as part of the request as well. They mainly tied into the whole “Garden of Eden” biblical concept, which we will get into next. I specifically chose white roses as the flower of interest because of their symbolism:
“ White roses often represent purity, innocence, and youthfulness. White roses are sometimes referred to as bridal roses because of their association with young love and eternal loyalty. White roses can also symbolize a new beginning and everlasting love. ”
In part two, you find out the origin of James’ and the reader’s love; how it all started in the garden, with the roses. However, the roses are very prevalent throughout the entire story, as well as what the owner of the garden said about them:  “if you kill the rose, the rose no longer profits you.” (keep that in mind)
They are what is known as a motif of literature.
Tumblr media
The first and simplest symbolic thing about them is the fact that they are the readers favorite flower, which is explained in the flashback in part two. Since they symbolize purity and innocence, it’s only right for them to be the reader’s favorite flower, as she is the same symbolic representation.
So far, they have briefly appeared in part one when James arrives at the reader’s house, and then again throughout most of part two.
To recall to part one:
“ Before you knew it, the man you had dreamed of for so many years was standing before you. You gasped as your eyes met his, the same dark brown framed by his sharp masculine features. It was as if you had seen the sun after years in the dark. Your eyes took in his features before shifting to look at the object in his hands. A bouquet of white roses lay clasped between his hands; your flowers. He had remembered. He really had come back for you. Finally, you had your James again. “
Since white roses symbolize a new beginning and everlasting love, I thought it important and fitting to include them as a symbol of just that. James and reader have always loved one another; everlasting love. James has come back for reader and they are starting their relationship again; a new beginning. The new beginning symbolism also applies to when the reader and James first met, or began.
BIBLICAL REFERENCE:
Now here’s where ideas collide a little bit. The Garden of Eden idea intertwines both of the previous topics into one another. First I want to establish what the real Garden of Eden story from the Bible is for anyone who doesn’t know. (Disclaimer: There are many many many interpretations of this story, and I just tried to find the simplest one.)
The Garden of Eden was essentially paradise. God placed an innocent Adam and Eve in the garden and tells them that they can eat freely from all of the trees in the garden, except of a tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When they are coerced by snakes of evil and eat the fruit, they gain the knowledge, and God banishes them from the garden as punishment for disobeying him. They were both sent down to Earth as God’s representatives. In some interpretations, Earth is often thought to be hell. So in a way, they were sent to hell.
That being said, here is how that fits into the story. James and reader meet in a white rose garden when they are young, which implements both the roses as a symbol of youthfulness and the innocence that is said to come with that, as well as a comparison between James & reader and Adam & Eve. When James and reader get older and gain more knowledge, they are forced apart, are no longer together in love, and their paradise is lost. This compares to Adam and Eve’s banishment to hell, when their paradise was lost. So in a biblical way, James and reader have been forced apart (losing paradise) to live in hell (which is just living without one another) as a punishment or consequence for gaining knowledge, or getting older. (Read that a few times to process it lmao)
As a side note, reader’s mother had also warned her of this. In the flashback, reader recalls her mothers words, “One day when all the distractions of young age are gone, you’ll realize why you need to be prepared.” You can assume that she had known that reader would be married off by her father, signifying that the same thing happened to her (it was common in the time), which ties into the “cycle of life“ concept (more about that down below). This is also basically saying that when you get older and become no longer oblivious (gain knowledge), you won’t live life the same carefree way. You loose your inner child. Reader’s mother was just trying to prepare her for that.
GOD CONCEPT:
Now we get to the reader and James’ new beginning, where all James wants is to recreate that paradise for the reader. The reader in turn views James as a God because of multiple reasons: he saved and freed her from hell, returned to her, he’s always been the one she can rely on and always loved (chose) her, made her feel like she was invincible when by his side, and also the fact that he went from being a poor boy to a rich man and built an empire (the hotel) on it.
And from here I’d like to talk about just a few more things; first being the last little bit of part two. I just feel like I need to explain the meaning of that part’s ending in conclusion to everything, to wrap everything up.
To recall once again:
“ You smiled once more at his words, thinking back to that day in the garden once more, and to your mother’s words. The feeling you had now was a reflection of the feeling you had then. He’d always made you feel so incredibly self-assured. You felt like no matter what happened to you and James, nothing could break you at this point and time. And your mother had been right: gaining the knowledge was important.
Now that you’d ate the fruit of the garden and survived hell, what could possibly stop you?
You felt invincible, so long as he was by your side. You no longer feared the past or the future; you were completely centered present, all cycles broken. And it had took James less than a day to make you feel this way. Your excitement soared as you thought about your future with James. You knew that so long as you had him, you were unstoppable together. You were gods.
You didn’t need the garden, after all. Paradise lost stood no match to you, because with James, you could survive anything. “
I’m going to specifically talk about the bold parts. Okay, so “eating the fruit of the garden” means gaining knowledge, as we’ve discussed, and for James and reader that represents their separation when they got older. So it’s basically saying that now that the reader and James have survived everything (from being separated to surviving without one another {hell} to then finding their way back to each other), what else could they possibly face that would break them?  And the last line is similar: the reader realizes that they have survived so much already, and feels that they can take anything. They don’t need to “go back” to anywhere; they can survive in any circumstance; they do not need the garden or paradise.
More about the god concept: since the reader views James as a god, and then feels invincible by his side, she feels as if they are now gods together.
CYCLE OF LIFE:
The cycle of life idea was not apart of the request, but upon approaching part one, I just kind of threw it in, as it added to the story quite a lot. The cycle of life ties straight into the whole reflection part of the story, with the reader having flashbacks to the past events that seemed to almost mirror the current events. This happens mainly in the two situations in which it was pointed out: when the reader was being abused by James father in the past and her husband in the present, and the feeling the reader had when she first met James being the same as she feels for him now in this new beginning. It’s a repetition. In the beginning of part one, it also begs the question: do the lessons we’re really meant to learn in life recur without us noticing?
END NOTES:
And that’s it! I hope that cleared some things up if you were confused! Let me know any questions you may have and I will certainly reply as quick as I can! I’m so unbelievably excited to finish part three! Thanks so much to everyone for the support <3. Happy Holidays if you celebrate! Sending love to all~ xoxo

Bible story that relates to disobeying laws.
The Old Testament speaks of the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. This can be found in the book of Genesis. The story is centered on the idea that Adam and Eve both disobeyed God’s and as a consequence, the world, unfortunately, became filled with sin. Adam and Eve are the progenitors of defying laws, as they defy the laws God’s has set over them, and as a consequence, a world of sin, shame, and disgrace was created. The story is told of Both Adam the head of the garden and eve his companion living in the garden as a punishment for their disobedience they were banished from the Garden. Genesis chapter 3 of the bible recalls the story of God’s creation. The unfortunate event can be linked to the social learning theory. The story of Adam and Eve will be discussed. The Old Testament speaks of the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden in Genesis chapter two. God established the law and vividly stated that of every tree of the Garden through mayest eat freely except for the tree of good and evil. In the case of law enforcement, looking at the story today, it can be said that Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s laws similarly, offenders infringe on the laws of the country and as a result, they have to be punished by the courts. God could also be seen as the law enforcer as they were warned not to eat off the tree before their wrongful actions. As a law enforcer today just as God had Adam and Eve being removed from the garden because of their sinful actions so too are criminals placed in confinement. As it relates to law enforcement today this Bible story depicts that from the beginning breaking the law had its consequences and as such it still has its consequence today. We now have a more formal police structure to help with law-breaking and how affects society.
The story of Adam and Eve can be linked to the social learning theory this speaks to individuals' motivation to commit the crime and may develop skills overtime to commit crime through the people they associate with. In the bible, story Eve coerced Adam to taste the fruit from the forbidden tree God told them not to eat of. They disobeyed God’s law and as a result, sin was created and they were hiding from God. The criminal justice system's main components help to balance the justice system by working together. As an officer of the law citizens are encouraged not to break the law, just as how God set the laws that Adam and Eve should have followed and they still choose to disobey. It can be said that God played the role of the Judiciary, executive, and legislator of these laws. Adam and Eve were given the rules of what they should follow and what was prohibited.
The courts work along with the police to ensure that the offenders are being corrected through the appropriate form of punishment. The Jamaican court system is ruled by precedence and looking at the Adam and Eve Bible story Eve had trespassed on things God warned her not to. Adam was also influenced to take a bite from the fruit. Criminal activities can be influenced by our environs and this is also another issue of the law enforcement system, as “ bad apples” in the constabulary force generally recruit more bad apple creating more corrupt cop to undermine the laws of Jamaica along with the constabulary force. This creates an unfitting environment as the public starts to criticize the entire police organization and have less faith in them as it relates to upholding the law. So too in the book of Genesis, it was since where after Adam and Eve disobeyed God and went and eat the fruits their faith was shifted afterward as they were now aware of the fact that they were naked and became shameful of their bodies and started to cover up. The story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden shows that it is the same way criminals hide from the law when it is broken hoping they won’t get caught to accept their punishment.
In today’s world, the Justice system is made of components that help to keep the Justice balanced God all can refer to as the supreme lawmaker who ensures that justice is always given. Looking at the story there is nothing I would have done differently as God charged them with disobeying his law and eating from the tree, because of their disobedience they were corrected by God himself, because of their disobedience. Adam and Eve were also given a fair trial as God questioned the couple about what happened why they disobeyed his command. They both admitted to not following God’s rule. Adam’s and Eve crime is equivalent to the theft act. However Adam was aware that the tree of Good and evil should not be eaten from as God spoke with him directly, on the other hand, was also aware that eating from the tree was prohibited but coerced to do so as her social environment made her consider the benefit over the crime while being ignorant to the extent of she would cause. As law enforcers, we should also provide ways in which citizens can become aware of their rights.
 In closing, the story in Genesis is a clear depiction that laws were implemented from the beginning of time to help us govern our actions. It also suggested that there is always a form of punishment when laws are being broken. The constitution contains the fundamental laws also known as the bill of rights that is expected to be followed by all citizens the police officers a the law enforcer who is privileged to ensure all the laws are enforced and followed they are also given the rights to make changes if a law is broken and harm or dangerous is caused.

In the Beginning ... (Rated PG)
What if Aziraphale’s job on Earth, in part, was to keep an eye on Crowley because God realized She’d made a mistake banishing him from Heaven? (2378 words)
Notes: I’m sure other people have written this, but here’s mine XD
“Aziraphale?”
A holy light shines down upon the angel currently scrambling to fit the last grey brick from a rather large hole in the great stone wall back into place. He spins around quickly in response, nearly twisting an ankle in the soft, disturbed earth.
“Yes, Almighty?” he replies, shielding his eyes from a glare that glows brighter second by second, as if God’s goal is to blind him on the spot. “H-how may I help you?” He worries his hands, then throws them behind his back so as not to bring attention to the fact that something those hands should be holding, something the Almighty gave him specifically to do his job, is now gone, paving its flaming way to the outskirts, clutched tightly in the hands of the first man protecting the first woman, both of them banished to the wilds beyond.
Banished for disobeying God, which he, too, has done.
‘Heaven help me,’ Aziraphale thinks, which smacks of irony seeing as he’s begging for help from those he’s just betrayed.
Any way he looks at it, he’s doomed.
He hopes Adam and Eve don’t walk too quickly. He may be catching up with them in a minute.
“Aziraphale, my dear,” God says, Her voice motherly sweet. “Come. Stand with me. I desire to talk with you.”
“All right,” Aziraphale agrees. No sooner does he say it then he’s standing at his post overlooking the Garden of Eden, and the apple tree he’d been tasked to guard.
The one that slipped his notice right when a giant snake tempted Eve into eating the fruit she’d been warned to avoid.
‘This is it. Banishment.’ He steals a final look at the glorious Paradise he’ll never set eyes upon again. He just got this appointment, too. It was a stepping stone, coming on the heels of another promotion set to begin soon.
Now, he’s finished.
But would he change a thing? he asks himself privately. If the situation presented itself again, would he do anything different? Would he second-guess giving up something valuable, something God-given, to protect the vulnerable and the innocent?
No, he answers honestly. He doesn’t think he would.
Aziraphale stands in silence beside the shaft of light, God’s ethereal form, for some time, ready to defend himself and his actions, before it becomes too much for him and he clears his throat to speak.
“God?” he starts. “Might I inquire as to what it is you wish to speak to me about?”
God heaves a heavy sigh.
A disappointed sigh.
Aziraphale’s stomach drops to his feet.
“Aziraphale,” she says sorrowfully, “I may have made a mistake.”
“That … that doesn’t make sense. You don’t make mistakes.”
“I created the concept of a mistake. I definitely make them.”
“What kind of mistake?” Aziraphale asks when he knows he should be holding his tongue. A sudden chill freezes him solid. Why would God be confiding in him this which sounds so utterly important if it didn’t concern him directly? “Is it me? Am … am I the mistake?”
“No, my love. You are not a mistake. Not by a long shot.”
Aziraphale sighs so deeply he shrinks a foot. “That’s a relief.”
“Do you see that demon over there?” God directs her light on the apple tree, the Tree of Knowledge, and a scaled, red-bellied creature slithering swiftly out of sight.
“I … I see a serpent.”
“Look with your third eye.”
The serpent burrows into the earth then as if it knows it’s being watched. Aziraphale squints to catch a glimpse of it past God’s golden glow before it disappears. “Ah, yes. I see now.”
“Just like you, that demon was once an angel. But now …” Another heavy sigh “… he is Fallen.”
“H-how? Why?” The words slip past his tongue before he can think better of it. He shudders with the feeling that he’s taking a huge risk questioning God.
“I banished him. Tossed him out of Paradise,” She explains succinctly and says nothing more. “And I realize now that I may have been a bit hasty with that decision.”
“If you feel you have made a mistake,” Aziraphale says, choosing his words carefully, “why not reverse it? Bring him back?”
“It’s not that simple.”
“It’s not?”
“Unfortunately, no. You see, all of my creations have their part to play in the Universe. And when I set them on their path, no matter what that path is, how it may change, they must remain, headed in one direction. Once an angel is Fallen, there is no way they can return. That’s where I’m hoping you come in.”
Aziraphale looks away from the hole the serpent escaped into and up at the light that is God. “Wh-what do you mean?”
“You and he are similar. You have the same pure heart, you cling to the same truths, though you execute them differently. You’re opposite sides of the same coin.”
Aziraphale frowns. “Coin?”
“You’ll find out about those later,” God dismisses. “I need you to help me keep an eye on him, Aziraphale.”
Aziraphale nods. This he understands. “So that his doing Evil deeds doesn’t prevail over the greater good.” He folds his hands in front of his stomach and puffs his chest with pride of his appointment. “Gabriel already told me.”
“Gabriel is wrong. Though, by the time the two of you meet, you won’t remember I’ve said that. In fact, you won’t remember this conversation at all.”
“Why won’t I?”
“Free will. In order for you to take this particular assignment, you can’t remember that it is an assignment.”
“Forgive me for my confusion, but what exactly is it you need me to do?” Aziraphale asks, mildly disappointed that the great role he was supposed to play in the evolution of the Earth, the inspiration of all humanity, may now be changed, demoted, due to the fate of one single demon.
“I need you to make sure nothing too bad happens to him, Aziraphale. Oh, he’ll do Evil. He’s a demon, and as such, must do demonic things, but … I want him to know that no matter what, he is loved.”
“If … if you erase my memory then how will I remember to do that?”
“You won’t need to.” God chuckles. “Within five minutes of meeting you, he’s going to fall hopelessly in love with you.”
Aziraphale’s face scrunches. “Really?”
“Yes. From this day forward, he’ll devise plans to ensure that the two of you forever meet throughout time.”
“Yes, I see. I suppose you’ve … you’ve planned it that way.”
“You underestimate yourself, my dear. That I will play little part in.”
“But … don’t you control everything?”
“Again, it’s confusing. The only answer I can give you is yes and no. Will you do it?”
“Why are you asking me? Can’t you simply make me do what you want? Set me in motion the way you set him in motion?” With a wince, Aziraphale notices how bitter that came across. He doesn’t question God’s ways, but that doesn’t mean he always appreciates Her line of thinking.
“No. Not when it comes to love. You have to decide this for yourself or it won’t turn out the same. The outcome won’t be genuine. Also edicts of this nature would need to pass through the head office, and I don’t want the Archangels knowing about this request. It’s top secret.”
“Top secret?” Aziraphale repeats, tossing God’s request over and over in his head. Down below he sees the serpent surface again. It looks up at them, tilts its head, and grins (if a serpent can grin. Normal serpents can’t but a demonic serpent probably can …). It ducks beneath the earth once more and disappears. “If I do this, will it be for the good of humanity?”
“Yes? No? Possibly? This one time, that can’t be the crux of your decision making.”
Aziraphale’s eyes unfocus as he considers what God has said. He feels better knowing that this assignment isn’t a demotion, but he still has to wonder … why him? Why would God choose a principality for something like this, especially if it’s this important? Wouldn’t an Archangel be better suited for a mission of this kind? Keeping tabs on a demon should fall somewhere in their purview.
Unless this top secret mission isn’t as important as God is making it out to be and just a fancy way of assigning Aziraphale to babysitting duty.
“Will he really fall in love with me?” Aziraphale asks, unsure why it matters. It should matter because he’s a being of love, but it surprises him how much that doesn’t seem to enter into his thinking. It matters because it matters, whether he can explain why that is or not.
“Yes,” God says, matter-of-factly.
“Will I … fall in love with him?”
“Eventually, but it’ll take a bit longer.”
“H-how long?”
“That depends on you, Aziraphale. But right now, time is running short. The demon is coming, so I need to know how you wish to proceed.”
“I think I should …” Aziraphale pauses when Gabriel’s voice, of all things, leaps into his brain.
“Your job on Earth will be to inspire humanity.”
“Inspire humanity to do what?”
“To be good. Follow the rules. And to, you know, love … one another,” the Archangel replied uncomfortably.
“Yes, of course,” Aziraphale said. “I read that in the literature I received. Thank you for that, by the way. What I need to know is how, exactly, am I supposed to do that? I have a general idea but what are my parameters? Do I have any guidelines?”
Gabriel blew out a breath and made a face. “Not really my department.”
“Oh,” Aziraphale replied, as lost then as he is right now.
Did anyone in Heaven know what was going on?
Inspire humanity. Inspire them to be good. To be compassionate and kind. To be loyal to God.
To help one another. Love one another.
That was a huge undertaking, no matter how Gabriel sneered and smirked when he mentioned it.
Aziraphale could do both jobs in tandem – inspire humanity and look after this demon. So no, not a demotion. Besides, it’s a top secret mission bestowed upon him by God Herself! Is he really going to say no?
It’s the love aspect that he’s having trouble wrapping his mind around. Love humanity he understood. But love a demon? And not necessarily for the sake of humanity? That part has been left to interpretation, apparently, but that’s not the point.
Love a demon.
A demon who will fall in love with him.
And make sure he knows God loves him still.
Because God may have made a mistake.
Oh, and fall in love himself, as if that’s something he can easily overlook.
That’s everything!
His stomach takes a turn and dammit! Why wasn’t he looking after that stupid apple tree the way he’d been supposed to!?
He doesn’t feel prepared to make this decision on the fly. He hasn’t entirely come to terms with what eternity as a whole will hold for him. This is the beginning. What happens in the middle?
What happens at the end!?
But while he ponders these quandaries, his mouth speaks unexpectedly for him.
“I’ll do it,” his mouth decides.
“Excellent!”
“Yes, excellent,” Aziraphale mutters, shuffling uncomfortably in place. “So, when do I begin?”
“Somewhere around … now.”
Aziraphale hears a sharp crack, like fingers snapping. Or could it be thunder? He thought he saw a fork of lightning out in the distance. Thunder would surely follow. Still, he can’t help the feeling that he was talking to someone about something important, but he can’t remember where they left off.
Or who they were.
“Sorry. What was that?” Aziraphale looks about him, confused. He’s at his post on top of the wall, the Eastern Gate of Eden, only he can’t recall how he got there. He’d been down in the garden giving those poor people his sword. He’d finished repairing the wall when he saw a light. He thought the Almighty had caught him, come to reprimand him, but now he’s back here.
Why can’t he remember what happened in between?
He turns his head left and right, then left again when the body of a snake rises up and transforms into the human-shaped figure of a demon dressed in long black robes and spreading glossy black wings.
“I said, ‘Well, that one went down like a lead balloon,’” the demon says, staring out over Eden forlorn, as if searching for a way home.
Aziraphale straightens, unnerved by the thousand nonsensical emotions erupting inside his brain, bursting like poppies with explosive colors and pungent aromas, dizzying him with unasked questions. “Oh,” he says, coming back to himself. “Yes, it did, rather.”
***
“Angel …”
Aziraphale startles. He turns and looks at his companion handing him the bottle of wine they’ve been sharing.
“Hmm?” he says in response.
“What if the Almighty planned it this way all along?” Crowley asks, gazing across the bus stop bench at Aziraphale, serpent eyes behind dark lenses hoping for an answer, some insight that only an angel might have that he is too far removed from. “From the very beginning?”
“Could have.” Aziraphale grabs the bottle by the neck and takes a swig. It tastes bitter, like truth. The realization that this ineffable plan – ineffable game, really – that God has devised isn’t just for the world, but for all Her creations, including them. They had played a part in it, too, regardless of how small, impotent, and in the end, unimportant that part was. But that begs the question - if saving the world wasn’t their particular goal then what was? What did they get out of all of this? Had the world exploded, they would have survived one way or the other. So why involve them?
The thing they got out of it, Aziraphale discovered, is the thing he refuses to acknowledge yet - not because it’s bad (in his eyes) but because it would be selfish of him to do so.
They got one another.
Was that part of God’s plan, too?
Aziraphale shrugs.
He’s not drunk enough to decide.
“I wouldn’t put it past Her.”

Life in 6 Letters =1 Word
What is the GOSPEL Journey message?
The word gospel means “good news” and is explained by the following six key truths of the GOSPEL Journey.
God created us to be with Him. (Genesis 1-2)
In these two chapters God creates all of the universe and everything in it (Genesis 1:1), including the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. God created Adam and Eve with purpose. He called them to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28) and fill the earth with their offspring. He gave them the mission of taking care of the earth and tending the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15.)
God made them to be in complete fellowship with Him and with each other. Their nakedness (Genesis 2:25) represented the fact that they had no sin, therefore no shame, therefore nothing to hide before God or each other. They regularly communed with God in the garden and had sheer bliss, pure happiness and unadulterated joy. It was during this time that they were living everyday as God intended, in right relationship with each other, God and His creation. The only command God gave to them was not to eat from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
In the same way God made us to be in fellowship with Him. His original plan was that you and I were in absolute and perfect relationship with Him and with each other in total unity. God created us to be in harmony with all of heaven and all of earth. But that plan was disrupted by one evil act thousands and thousands of years ago.
Our sins separate us from God. (Genesis 3)
When Adam and Eve were tempted by Satan and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3:6), and thereby sinned, they immediately became aware of their “error.” They sewed fig leaves together to cover their shame and hid in the garden from God (Genesis 3:7,8). Now they were hiding from the one that they used to fellowship with regularly. Men and women have been hiding from God ever since, covering their sin and shame with the fig leaves of religion or philosophy.
God confronted them face to face. As a result of their sin there were immediate and future consequences. The immediate consequences were being banished from the garden (Genesis 3:23,24), having difficulty in childbirth (Genesis 3:16) and our work turning from a joy that we love to a job that we hate (Genesis 3:17-19).
The future consequence for Adam and Eve was physical death. God had promised in Genesis 2:17 that the day he sinned by eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that he would “surely die.” Spiritually Adam and Eve died the day they sinned in the garden. Their souls became immediately polluted by sin and selfishness. As a result all of their offspring (and that includes you and me) were born sinful and selfish. Through Adam every person ever born is born deprived and depraved, deprived of God’s fellowship and depraved to the core (Romans 5:12-14).
When confronted by God the blame game begins. Adam blames Eve (Genesis 3:12) and Eve blames the snake (Genesis 3:13). Humanity has been playing the blame game ever since. What began as paradise unraveled with a single choice to disobey God and listen to Satan instead. Every war, famine, argument, sin and tragedy can be traced back to the garden of Eden where Adam and Eve chose to turn their backs on God for a taste of fruit.
Sins cannot be removed by good deeds. (Genesis 4 – Malachi 4)
From the beginning humanity has attempted to remove the stain of sin by good deeds. When Cain offered God vegetables as an appeasement for his sin God rejected it (Genesis 4:1-4). Cain was infuriated and killed his brother Abel.
In Exodus, the second book of the Bible, God gave the Israelites the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17), not to save them from their sin, but to show them that they couldn’t live up to his perfect standards on their own (Galatians 3:23-24). Instead of looking to Him in faith many of the Jews looked to themselves and thought they could please God in their own strength. But God saw their “righteous” deeds like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Even the best of their good deeds were corrupted by selfish motives.
In Leviticus, the third book of the Bible, God gave the Israelites the sacrificial system. Every time a Jew sinned he or she was to sacrifice a goat without any blemishes (Leviticus 4:27-31). Think about that. If you were a Jew in the Old Testament and had to make a sacrifice every time you lied, lusted, gossiped, complained or argued you would soon run out of goats. Other offerings included offerings of bulls and sheep.
The sacrificial system was meant to point inward, upward and forward. It pointed inward to convince you of your sinfulness. If you were honest before God then you would soon realize that you could never make enough sacrifices for your sin. It pointed upward to make you trust in God for your salvation instead of sacrifices that you could make (Psalm 51:16,17). It pointed forward to the ultimate sacrifice of the lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who would someday come to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
The rest of the Old Testament tells the story of the Jewish people, some of whom realized they were sinners and needed God to save them (Psalm 51:1,2) and most of whom trusted in their own goodness instead of the mercy and grace of God (Isaiah 64:6).
Paying the price for sin, Jesus died and rose again. (Matthew – Luke)
When Jesus came to the earth he came as the fulfillment of the law (Matthew 5:17) and the ultimate sacrifice (Luke 24:46). He lived the perfect life that we could not live and died in our place, for our sin. When he died upon the cross he screamed the words “It is finished” (John 19:30). What he meant by these three words was that the price for our sins was paid completely. He was fully God and entirely man. As a perfect human he could die for other humans. As the true and living God his payment for sin was infinite.
Jesus rose from the dead three days after he was murdered on the cross (Mark 16:6). He was seen by over 500 witnesses (I Corinthians 15:6) on at least 12 separate occasions over the course of forty days (Acts 1:3). Because he died our sins are paid for entirely. Because he rose from the dead we know that Jesus was who he claimed to be, God in the flesh.
Everyone who trusts in Him alone has eternal life. (John)
The amazing thing about eternal life is that it is a free gift given to us by God through faith alone and not by any of our good deeds (Ephesians 2:8,9). Jesus paid the price for our sins when he died on the cross and all we must do is receive the gift of forgiveness through faith. When we believe that Jesus died for our sins and trust in Him alone we receive eternal life, are passed out of death into life and are guaranteed a home in heaven (John 5:24).
Eternal life is not achieved by good deeds but received through faith. It’s not a matter of trying but trusting. When we believe we receive the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. Almost the entire New Testament is dedicated to talking about this eternal life and the implications of it in our everyday lives. From John through Jude the disciples of Jesus show us how to live like Jesus intended, serving each other in love. This is the heart of eternal life!
Life with Jesus starts now and lasts forever. (Acts – Revelation)
Because Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead we will be with Jesus forever in heaven. When we trust in Jesus we enter into a personal, permanent relationship with God called “eternal life.”
Part of the reality of eternal life is that it doesn’t start after you die but as soon as you believe (John 10:10). This life is the joy of a real, exciting relationship with Jesus every single day through prayer, worship and living in the strength that God provides through his Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
The other part of the reality of eternal life is that all who have it will be with Jesus forever and ever in heaven someday. Once we receive it is ours forever and we are his forever!
The last chapter of the last book of the Bible makes it clear that we will “rule and reign forever” with Jesus (Revelation 22:5). In essence the last chapter in the story of the Bible concludes by saying, “and they lived happily ever after.”

Lyrics: Ryuji Composition: Watanabe Sousuke Arrangement: tatsuo, Watanabe Sousuke
English Translation:
On the whim of the gods, the light of life was born A soul was trapped in a cage called the body
The Trees of Life, the flowering plants that water the cracked soil The fate of someone who will live on as a human
Ah, breaking, breaking, I can no longer go home That Garden of EDEN no longer exists If you bite into the one fruit, you can't go back Even though I knew that the fruit would taint me with rot and yet...
For the purpose of meeting that person, the light of life was born Everything looked beautiful to me
From the fruit of knowledge of good and evil, oh, snake skin, fig trees The fate of living on as a human
Ah, breaking, breaking, I can no longer go back That Garden of EDEN no longer exists If you bite into the one fruit, you can't go back I'm in pain... Even though I knew that I shouldn't have...
Ah that which is forbidden Ah that bewitching charm We were able to meet the person we were meant to be with, if only we hadn't crossed paths with it...
Ah, breaking, breaking, I can no longer go home That Garden of EDEN no longer exists If you bite into the one fruit, you can't go back Even though I knew that it'd be a loss of freedom...
NOTE:
Written by Ryuji, the lyrics for "Adam" tell the story of the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, who lived in the Garden of Eden, also known as Paradise, before they were banished from the garden after eating the forbidden fruit of knowledge of good and evil.
In the original story, God tells Adam that he can eat freely from all the trees in the garden, except for the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. However, a serpent deceives Eve into eating the fruit from the forbidden tree, and she shares the fruit with Adam. Having disobeyed God, Adam and Eve now have to live with the consequences of their actions and leave the Garden of Eden.
Ryuji incorporates a lot of the imagery based on the original story into his lyrics, including how Adam was the first one to be created and how Eve was created for the purpose of being Adam's companion. He has also included mentions of "snake skin", which is likely a reference to the serpent, and "fig trees", which is likely a reference to the fig tree(s) in the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve got the leaves that they used to cover themselves up after they realised they were naked.

Summary: Jophiel, the First Angel, was tasked with caring for the rest of the Heavenly Host. It became her duty, her post, her calling. For all intents and purposes she was their mother. A mother who loved her children beyond love--more than the sea or the earth or the sun or the moon or Heaven itself.
Relationships: Jophiel & The Heavenly Host, God & The Heavenly Host, God & Jophiel, Adam/Eve
Characters: Jophiel, God, Raphael, Uriel, Jegudiel, Michael, Selaphiel, Brachiel, Gabriel, Ariel, Kokabiel, Belial, Mephistophelees, Procel, Adam, Eve, Cain, Lucifer
Additional Tags: creation myth, heaven, hell, archangels, unique formatting, there’s not supposed to be quotation marks, absent parent, non-typical pronouns, pronouns are all over the place, blatant abuse of capitalization, the garden of eden, earth, brief/non graphic child abuse, technically, blasphemy probably, the tree of knowledge, baby angels, fall of humanity, fall of lucifer
~~~~~~~~~~~
Jophiel was once an angel.
The very first angel, as it was. There was nothing but her and her Father in the vast space of oblivion. It wasn’t lonely because she didn’t have anything to reference against. Mostly, it was just calm.
And then there was light.
God made more like her within the light that was Heaven. Archangels, He called them. His children.
Raphael, and Uriel, and Jegudiel, and Michael, and Selaphiel, and Brachiel, and little Gabriel.
As the eldest, Father told Jophiel, you must watch over them. I have much work yet to do.
Jophiel did as He asked.
The archangels varied in stages of development--from Raphael who had very little physical growing left to do, to Michael who had yet to fly, to Gabriel who couldn’t walk. They were difficult to handle, but Jophiel managed: answering every one of Jegudiel’s questions, singing with Selaphiel, playing silly games with Brachiel, praising Uriel’s drawings. She taught Raphael how to heal, and coached Michael in how to fly, and held Gabriel’s hands as he stumbled on round legs. She made sure to kiss every scraped knee and to listen to everything they had to say.
The archangels grew until they were capable of doing nearly everything by themselves, even if Jophiel made sure they would never have to. They had her, and they had each other.
Why? Jegudiel asked one day. We are grown. You have fulfilled what Father has asked of you.
Because, Jophiel answered, taking his hands in hers, I love you all.
Jegudiel said he didn’t understand. Father said to love all things, of course Jophiel loved the archangels. But it didn’t explain why Jophiel went so above and beyond Father’s orders.
Because, said Jophiel with a lowered voice, I love you all more than anything else Father has made. More than the sea or the animals Father made to fill the Earth or the moon or the sun or Heaven itself.
Is that allowed? Jegudiel asked, gasping as the concept.
Jophiel shrugged, uncaring.
Then God decided that there should be more angels. Many, many, many more angels.
The archangels shall help you, He told Jophiel.
Jophiel didn’t want to pull Uriel from his work or force seriousness onto Brachiel, or make any of them shoulder the heavy burdens of responsibility. But she didn’t have much of a choice.
If you have any questions come to me, she told them.
You are already doing so much, Raphael protested. In her arms she held two of Heaven’s most recent arrivals.
Come to me, Jophiel insisted. I’ve done this before, and you needn’t struggle.
The archangels listened, as they always listened to her.
Jophiel made a point to listen and speak to and praise the archangels as she always had. She tried as much as possible to bear the brunt of the rearing of the new angels: bedtime stories and hugs to make the bruises better and help with walking and then flying and singing lullabies and rocking to sleep and conversing with them even when it was half nonsense. She whispered to each and every one of them that she loved them more than the sea or the animals Father makes or the moon or the sun or Heaven itself.
Every time she thought that Father might stop creating more angels, another feathery bundle with a cooing fledgling within would be handed to her with a reminder to look out for them. She always held them close and kissed their head and committed herself over to them.
You deserve a title, Gabriel told her once. Like how I am the Messenger and Michael is the General and Uriel is the Grand Painter.
I am the Eldest, the First, Jophiel reminded. I need no more than that.
Yes you do, argued Ariel--one of the older angels who dedicated much of his existence to the care of those younger, though Jopheil never allowed his burden to match hers.
You’ve cared for us all, you have loved us beyond love, Brachiel added.
Mother, Ariel suggested. Like the mother animals who take care of their young.
Why? Jophiel asked. I did not make you. Father did.
But you are our Mother, Gabriel insisted. You may not have birthed us, but you have raised us and loved us beyond love like a mother should. You are no sister, you are more.
So the angels began to call Her Mother and loved Her all the more.
More than the sea or the animals Father has made or the moon or the sun or Heaven itself, they told Her just as She told them.
God was not around to hear Her new title. He was busy with what He called His Greatest Creation. Not that He had been around much Before. At least He had used to make time for the archangels--His Eldest, His First, His Best.
Jophiel had not known anger Before. She had never had a reason to feel anger. She just did as God said, following His orders. Then again, the angels and archangels had never been carelessly caused pain Before, especially not by the one they called Father.
She had not known anger but She recognized it. Knew what it was that She felt when God turned Selaphiel away from Him, and when He ignored Uriel’s newest and most beautiful inventions of the sunset, and when He refused to answer Jegudiel’s questions about the newest addition to Earth.
I am Finished, God announced, long after the archangels stopped trying for His attention and the angels learned not to expect to feel His presence with even the most sporadic frequency.
What is it? Jophiel asked while everyone else remained silent.
Man, said God. My Greatest Creation. I want you to serve them and love them more than anything else I have ever made, and ever will.
No, Jophiel said. Her anger from the past resurfaced and grew in strength.
God forgot how to speak. He did not expect Her of all His angels to speak back, if any at all.
Mother, the angels murmured, as one. Mother do not fight Him, Mother do as He says. Do not disobey, Mother.
What is this? God finally spoke.
The murmuring quieted but did not end.
I will not love Man as your Greatest Creation, Jophiel told Him. Your Greatest Creations have been in front of you since the Beginning.
Do not be Prideful, Jophiel, He said like thunder over a plain. You are not My Greatest Creation.
I’m not, agreed Jophiel. But they are.
The archangels inched closer to Her side, eyes averted from the sheer force of His glare. The angels shivered behind Her, but they still closed rank.
As for loving Man more than anything else, I cannot, She said. For I have loved these angels more than love. More than the sea or all of the animals You have created or the moon or the sun or Heaven itself. I am their Mother and they are My children.
If you will not Obey Me, said God with righteous fury. Then you are no longer welcome Here.
I will not leave them, She said, Her wings spreading wide before Her children like they would shield the hundreds behind Her from God Himself.
You will, God decreed, and pulled.
Mother! The angels cried.
Father, stop! the archangels pleaded.
Jophiel forced Herself to stay on Her feet even as blood flowed down from the stumps of where Her wings should be.
Father! Father! the angels screamed.
Mother! they wailed.
I banish You to Hell, Jophiel, and take Your wings in penance, He said and She was Falling.
What She was not there to hear was God’s demands. The angels must choose: Him, their Creator, their Father and Heaven or Her and Hell and Eternal Damnation.
Hundreds of angels Fell. More stayed.
When Jophiel awoke to find so many of Her children strewn around Her, injured by the Fall from Heaven to Hell, wings torn from them without regard--from Kokabiel, the Star, one of the eldest, to tiny little Belial with her face still round with fat, never given the chance to use the wings God had given her--She felt rage.
How dare He.
All for what? His newest creation? The one He claimed to be better than anything else He made Before? After He ignored His proclaimed children He had no hand in raising, passed to Her mere moments after their births?
How.
Dare.
He.
She held Belial close to Her breast, smoothing away her tears and whispered, I love you more than love, more than Heaven itself.
How could He, Mother? My wings, Mother! Mother, I just wanted to stay with you! Heaven is our home, Mother! He made me choose, Mother!
Their voices rose together, crying out for Her to comfort.
I am so sorry for what God has done to you, She said. I will not let Him go unpunished for what He has done.
What will you do? Mephistophelees asked, clinging to Her arm.
I will destroy the Man that He so loves, Jophiel proclaimed.
The Garden, Procel whispered, more and more of xir brethren picking up the chant. The Garden, the Garden, the Garden on Earth. He keeps Man there. The Garden, Garden, Garden.
Look after each other, said Jophiel. I will be back as soon as I have accomplished what I seek. I love you all more than the sea and the animals and the moon and the sun and Heaven itself.
Love you, love you, love you.
And She set off to destroy God as He destroyed Her--making Her children choose between Her or Him, when He knew that many of them could force themselves to leave. She could never ask any of Her children to Fall for Her, though it warmed her Heart that some of them were willing to do so.
She would make this Man choose, and She would make sure they wouldn’t choose Him.
There were two of them. Man and Woman. Adam and Eve. Full grown even though they were only days old. Jophiel watched and waited and listened. They were not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. She would insure that they did.
Eve was difficult to persuade, but not impossible. Jophiel just told her the truth of God, how truly awful He was. How He abandoned His first “favorites” for Man, and very well might do so again.
God threw them Out when He learned that they had eaten from the Tree. Without the Garden they were helpless in the desert, surrounded by hostile animals and harsh vegetation.
Jophiel watched as Eve carried and bore the first son, Cain. Adam struggled to tame and fend off the wildlife in order to provide for what was his. Better than God had ever done.
Jophiel pitied the Man and Woman and Son. She hadn’t thought God would abandon them so harshly, not so soon after making them.
She went to Eve one day, when she was heavy with her second child and Cain was just learning to walk.
Who are you? Eve asked fearfully.
I am the Mother of Angels, She said. My name is Lucifer Morningstar, the Bringer of Light.
Because She had brought light, hadn’t She? Without Her there might be no light at all, for all She knew. God might not have ever began creating if He had never created Her. Without Her there would be no real light, either. Without her none of the angels would be anywhere close to what they were. There would be no stars, and no sunrises or sunsets, no flavors in the food the mortal beings needed to live, or colors that bloomed in all things, or music everywhere.
Why are you here? Eve asked. Cain peered from behind her legs and made Jophiel’s-no, Lucifer’s heart to clench with remembrance of little angels that were always around. She may not be an angel, may have rid God’s given name for Her, but Before was still a sweet memory.
You are a mother, like I am, Lucifer answered. A mother who has been spurned by the one you call Father, a Father who has left your children to pain and harshness.
I know You, said Eve. You are the Snake from the Garden.
I was angry at God, She admitted. He had taken My wings and threw Me to Hell, and then forced My children to choose. The ones that chose me were exiled from Heaven. It was only fair to return the favor.
Eve didn’t speak, but Lucifer could read her eyes.
You know it was fair. You would do the same for Cain.
Why have you come? Eve asked, voice trembling.
I bear apologies, and gifts, Lucifer told her. I apologize for the way God has thrown you out, and the part I played in that, and I bear the gift of a title.
What good will a title do me while my son starves and my husband toils all day? Eve asked.
Titles give power you do not know, answered Lucifer. You shall be known as the Mother of All Man, and with it you will raise many children who will do many good things. With this title, you become powerful. And power is something to be sensed by every living thing.
Eve understood, and nearly cried out in thanks when thunder crashed across the skies and rain poured down from Heaven.
You must go, said Gabriel from the door. Or Father will force you to.
Gabriel... Lucifer murmured. It had been longer than any time Before since She had last seen him.
Father says you are to leave Earth and his Humans in peace, Gabriel insisted.
Lightning forked across the sky.
Mother, please, go, Gabriel whispered. His wings wilted and his eyes cried their pain.
I will, said Lucifer. If you will carry a message for me.
Gabriel nodded and the Mother of All Men watched on with the First Son.
Tell all of the archangels and angels still in Heaven that I wish them the best, She said. Tell them I am sorry I left, that I love them beyond love. More than the sea or the beasts or the moon or the sun or Heaven itself.
Gabriel began to turn away.
And tell them that they will always be My children, She called after him. You will always be Mine.
I know, he answered. We know.
So he returned to Heaven, and She returned to Hell, and Humanity forgot the name Jophiel. But angels were not Humans.
They would never forget.
Hey so uh I forgot that I hate drawing wings lol
Anyways, this is a headcanon I came up with sometime 2 weeks ago and I’m sure someone else already came up with as well and wrote about before I finished this involved-ass drawing and wrote about it myself but I’m sharing it anyway. Of course it involves Good Omens cause uhh that’s the current hyperfixation my dudes
Basically this is the Archangel, Raphael.
About the headcanon under the cut if you’re interested (prepare for a goddamned novel)
So yeah, this is a drawing of the Archangel Raphael. I’m sure those interested have heard the theory by now that Crowley could have been the Archangel Raphael before the Fall, based on the fact that Raphael is not in Good Omens canon (seemingly replaced by Sandalphon or whatever), Raphael’s symbol is a snake wrapped around a staff, and, for me personally, the fact that Crowley can just??? Stop time????? Like what kind of overpowered Bull Shit
(I’m sure there’s a bunch of other things that support this theory that I just don’t know, please look it up some people really go in depth and it’s awesome)
Also, a brief note on angel rankings. I looked it up, and it didn’t really help because there is a lot of conflicting information out there. In the end,  I just kept it at Wikipedia cause fuck it, it is a pretty reliable source in the end. We’re gonna be focusing on the first and third spheres, since the second sphere really doesn’t apply. Basically, the highest order of angels are seraphim, followed by the cherubim and then the thrones. Skip the second sphere, and the lowest three rankings are, in order of most to least rank, principalities (or rulers), archangels, and angels. Now, concerning the difference between archangels and Archangels: apparently the capital letter makes a big ol difference. Archangels with a capital letter are not, in fact, the second lowest ranking but may be interpreted to mean above all other angels, and are the highest ranked angels even among the seraphim. Therefore, the highest angels of the highest are referred to as Archangels with a capital A. (Idk if the Archangels are even really mentioned in the book, I haven’t read it yet, so idk if their titles are capitalized. I’m talking mostly in the context of the Amazon Prime show.)
Quick description of seraphim and therefore Archangels straight from Wikipedia: “fiery six-winged beings; with two wings that cover their faces, with another two that cover their feet, and the last two they use to fly.” (Oh shit I forgot the fire goddamnit I’m such a fuckin idiot oh well it’s too late I wrote this after I finished the drawing)
So, Crowley could be the fallen Archangel Raphael. However, as someone else brought up (and I’ve seen several posts stating this), the name “Aziraphale” is like a bastardization of the phrase “Also Raphael,” meaning Aziraphale could have been the Archangel Raphael but demoted and therefore forced to be renamed. It makes sense that Aziraphale could have been at least of a higher rank than a Principality because he was supposed to be guarding the Gates of Eden, which, in biblical canon, were guarded by higher ranking angels than Principalities (I think they were as high up as cherubim?? idk).
And then I heard, when Neil and Terry were writing the book, both Aziraphale and Crowley were originally just the demon, Crowley. I think it was Terry who made the decision to split that one character into 2 characters instead.
(Also if that isn’t the most soulmate-y shit I’ve ever heard)
But also like... What if that was how it was in canon?
What if........Crowley and Zira............................were both........the Archangel Raphael before the Fall?
Cause like, Raphael (or Israfel, in some religions) literally means “God heals.” Some of the things they’re the patrons are are of “young people,” “guardian angels,” “lovers,” “travelers,” basically everyone in the medical field, and “ordained marriage.” They’re like... everything optimistic and loving and hopeful about humanity. (Nothing about time but like, wtf?? That’s so powerful it’s gotta be the power of the seraphim, it’s at least equal enough to Lucifer’s power that it’s able to give them more time before Lucifer shows up to make a game plan, like it stops Lucifer???? That’s some power to give a lowly-ass demon, that an angel as powerful as a Principality isn’t able to do) It makes you think huh, maybe they care about humanity a lot more than most of the others would. So how would they have fallen?
Well, maybe they got angry at God for testing the humans so damn much. Like Crowley said, a tree right in the middle of the garden that’s super accessible? Literally the only thing the humans aren’t allowed to touch when humans, the most curious and spiteful things in the universe, are more likely to touch something when they’re told not to, when it’s obviously not allowed, and doesn’t appear to present any immediate danger? It’s not very fair.
Another interesting thing; in some canon, Raphael is even considered to be the closest to God, able to talk directly to Her, and possibly even the highest ranking angel of all, even above Michael. So God was likely very close to Raphael in return. (Of course, in the context of the show, it seems that all of the Archangels are very disconnected and are also all on equal footing, it not being entirely clear where Michael, Uriel, and Gabriel stand with each other in terms of ranking even though Michael is usually considered the highest ranked in most biblical canon. One explanation I came up with is that after God banished Raphael, that would be two of the seven archangels that She would have had to banish, her favored, so She could have withdrawn from everything in order to have some alone time, and just became more and more withdrawn as time went on until it was like She’d completely abandoned them.)
And if Raphael started questioning this wrathful god who just kicked out like, half of heaven, including Lucifer, one of her other favorites, I imagine she’d be pretty upset and not willing to hear about complaints right now. But she trusts this angel, so instead of straight kicking Raphael out, she gives them a choice instead. It’s not like they’re trying to straight rebel, anyways.
When Raphael chooses to leave, She doesn’t have a choice then but to cast at least that part of Raphael out, the part that cares too much, who doesn’t want to harm the humans. She says, “crawl under the feet of those you care so much about,” and splits their eyes and casts their staff down into hell cause like, you can’t just have a rogue ethereal being wandering about Earth with the humans, so the newly formed snake which represents all that Raphael chose to leave heaven for is Lucifer’s problem now.
But in splitting Raphael like that, she’s left with this less powerful being who’s still attached to heaven, who still has the gold of an angel but it looks washed out on their head, and who looks up with sky blue eyes and who looks lost as anything. She doesn’t want Raphael gone, so She pretends this one is also Raphael, but She’s still kinda upset so She sends this “Also Raphael” to Earth to guard Eden. Because they’re weakened, She equips them with a limited edition Flaming Sword™ and sends them to guard the Gates of Eden.
Meanwhile, the Raphael that got sent to Hell gets processed (?) and realizes that they’re now a snake. They really don’t like the name “Crawley” in the future so I imagine that when they joined hell, they were given the name “Crawley” based on the fact that they’re now a snake, and none of the residents of Hell wanna go to Earth since the entire reason almost all the demons in hell got kicked out of Heaven is cause they didn’t wanna love humans. “Crawley,” however, got kicked out for caring about humans too much, so the lords in hell decide to send them. So “Crawley” ends up tempting the humans into eating the fruit, making sure it’s on their terms and happens somewhat safely, and watches the humans leave.
And then he meets “Also Raphael,” and, as someone else has pointed out, Crowley has never had to ask for their name. They just know 👀
Crowley, imo, has been the better of the two, consistently throughout the series. Crowley’s never killed, has always questioned why humans have to be tested and hurt and killed, including motherfucking Jesus Christ, hasn’t even lied to Aziraphale, tries to get out of doing their job consistently, jumps on the opportunity to perform miracles alongside their dastardly inconveniences, has been in love with Aziraphale ever since they found out that Zira helped protect the humans by giving the couple Zira’s own protection??? The “god-given Flaming Sword™?” HELLO THIS DEMON IS IN LOVE AND THAT IS ACTUALLY CANON?????? That, and like... while Aziraphale, who’s still a part of heaven’s whole bureaucracy deal, felt the need to contact god through a whole damn ritual, all Crowley did to try and contact God was just look up and talk. I think Crowley knows about the choice and about who they were before the Fall, but doesn’t associate themselves as Raphael anymore, therefore the “I didn’t chose to fall, (BUT) I just sorta sauntered vaguely downwards.”
(Going off of that, I don’t think Crowley knows that Aziraphale is literally their other half; I like to think that Crowley just thinks Aziraphale was the angel chosen by Her as their replacement in heaven, therefore “Also Raphael” meaning another Raphael and not literally part of them that they left in heaven. They don’t know why they knew that Aziraphale was named Aziraphale right off the bat, but it doesn’t really matter to them tbh; before they fell in love, they thought Aziraphale was just another angel, and then after they fell in love it still didn’t matter cause they were in love baby!)
Meanwhile, Aziraphale’s goodness is either out of fear of disobeying heaven or being nice to Crowley. Which, they’re not even that nice to Crowley when it matters tbh. Or humans, most of the time. Like they protected Adam and Eve but wasn’t gonna blink an eye about all those children being drowned until Crowley guilted them about it.
Although they used to be the same angel, I think that, over 6000 years and even then, in the Garden, Crowley and Aziraphale ended up becoming their own person. Aziraphale, even though God cast out the part that cared about humans a little too much and is basically Raphael’s attachment to heaven and God, ended up caring quite a bit on their own, giving the first couple that sword for protection and growing very attached to the things humans created, and abandoned their allegiance to heaven after losing their faith. Crowley, who is the care and defiance and power of the archangel Raphael, ended up a pretty lowly ranked demon and is pretty damn bitter, especially after the death of Jesus of Galilee, and when they do use their power, it’s usually to fuck with humans in some capacity (unless it’s to help himself or Aziraphale :P ).
TL;DR I think that both Crowley and Aziraphale are remnants of the Archangel Raphael after the Fall because Raphael questioned God concerning the testing of the humans and chose to leave heaven. God wasn’t happy and did some shit that ended up with Crowley and Aziraphale being as they are. But both are still their own person.
mother! (2017)
SPOILERS!
“mother!” is a psychological horror-drama written and directed by Darren Aronofsky. It stars Jennifer Lawrence (as Mother), Javier Bardem (as Him), Ed Harris (as Man), and Michelle Pfeiffer (as Woman). I have never in my life, and probably never again will see a movie like this. After it concluded, I sat in the theater in awe at what I had just witnessed. But in all honestly initially, I didn’t fully understand it. Its a rollercoaster of insanity, keeping you wondering about everything that is put before you on screen. Several hours after I had left the theater, it all hit me. I believe that I have found the true meaning of this film. The story revolves around Jennifer Lawrences character Mother, and her “tranquil existence” she has set up for herself and her husband (Javier Bardem’s character Him), who is a famous poet. This tranquility is interrupted however, by the arrival of Ed Harris’ character Man, and his wife, Michelle Pfeiffer’s character Woman. IF THERE IS EVEN REMOTELY A CHANCE THAT YOU WILL SEE THIS FILM, STOP READING NOW. This movie can lose its effect and shock factor when you know what the end goal is. You have been warned. My final take on this film is that Mother is Mother Nature, our earth. The movie opens with a scorched house, being almost brought back to life. We see Mother wake from her sleep, looking for her husband. Early on, it is obvious that mother is “one” with the house she lives in. She will often put her head against a wall and see the homes heart beating full, and plump. This in essence is her heart. Javier Bardem’s character, Him, is essentially God. He is in a relationship with mother, but not an fully intimate one. However its evident that they both want children. When they are alone in their home, everything is tranquil. This shows the peaceful existence of earth and God before the arrival of gods second most coveted creation, man. Ed Harris plays the original Man, in biblical terms this would be Adam. He arrives at the house one night and Him welcomes Man with open arms. But Mother is not so accepting. Man is very kind, but its obvious that his presence is an intrusion. He smokes, which makes mother uncomfortable. She asks man to not smoke in the house, but she soon finds that he disobeyed her and has been secretly smoking all along. This is a subtle plot point and if you’re not paying attention, it is something that you can overlook. But this is how man, humanity, has begun to treat earth with disrespect. Him invites Man into his study, where he gets all of his writing done. In the study, is a magnificent crystal that is obviously very, very, special to Him. Man tries to touch it, only for Him to quickly pull away and inform Man that the crystal is to be admired but not touched. The study is a reference to the Garden of Eden, or even the Tree of Knowledge, and the crystal is the Apple. Adam is obedient and keeps from touching the apple. This scene is followed with mother being awoken at night to find that Him is not in bed. She hears hurling coming from the guest bathroom, and walks in on Him comforting Man as he pukes into a toilet. She sees that Man has a severe cut along his rib. Him quickly covers it and asks mother to leave. My first initial thought was confusion. But in retrospect, this was the movie telling us that God (Him) has just created Woman from Mans rib. And soon after, Woman appears at the front door. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Woman, and her portrayal of Eve is astounding. Him once again invites her in with open arms because she is Mans wife. Mother once again in uncomfortable with Woman’s intrusion. Woman is rude, and she is brash. She gives off this vibe as though she knows everything. On the same day as Woman’s arrival, Him takes Man on a walk (which is a direct reference to the walks that God would take Adam on in the Bible), and mother is left alone with Woman. Woman is very curious about the room where all the magic happens (the study where Him writes). She says over and over that she just wants a peek into the room, but mother makes it very clear that Him doesn’t like anyone being in his study without him being there. This is Eves curiosity getting the best of her. Him returns with Man, and Mother has a short conversation with Him. Their conversation is interrupted by a crash, the sound of something breaking on a hardwood floor. Him and Mother run upstairs and see that Man and Woman are in His study and Woman, overcome with curiosity, has touched the crystal and broken it. This is a clear reference to Eve, biting the apple to gain knowledge (Woman says to Him that she just wanted to know what it felt like to think as He did) and it backfiring. Him is enraged and yells at Man and Woman. Woman says she is sorry, but it is obvious that she really isn’t. He banishes them from his study and boards it up, so that no man can every set foot in there without his permission. This is Adam and Eves banishment from the Garden of Eden. Him allows them to stay in the house (because the house is Earth), but mother wants them to leave. When mother goes to kick them out the next morning, the confrontation is interrupted by the arrival of Younger Brother. He is there to warn Man and Woman that Oldest Son, his brother, is enraged after reading the will that Man wrote (Man is dying). Oldest Son soon arrives and an altercation ensues. There is a struggle and Oldest Son ends up killing Younger Brother. This is a reference to Cain and Abel. In the Bible, they are the sons of Adam and Eve, and Cain kills Abel for fear that Abel was Gods “favorite”. Soon after, Him allows for a reception to be held at the home for Man and Woman and their friends and family following the death of Abel. Mother does not want all of these people in her home, but Him allows them to be there, disregarding the discomfort that mother feels. Woman is rude to Mother and Man mourns. Suddenly people fill her house, and Mother is overwhelmed. Many of the “guests” ask why Mother is there and she responds, “this is my home”. Every time she mentions that the home is hers, she is met with a sarcastic response, many of the guests saying that that He (Him) says that the home is everyones. This is humanity saying that God has given the Earth to them. It belongs to everyone, and they come and go when they want and do as they please. They don’t care about Mother Nature, because God has allowed humanity to trample over her, use and abuse her. The guests trash her home, and mother kicks them out despite what Him says. She is left to clean up the mess (she must pick up the pieces of humanities disregard for Earth; nature; her) and an argument between Mother and Him ensues. The intense argument turns into intense passion and Mother becomes pregnant. Him is inspired and his writers block is lifted. He writes and he writes until he finishes his “perfect” completed work. This is, in essence, is the Bible. Mother is upset to find out that Him has let his publicist (who is credited as Herald and played by Kristen Wiig) read his completed work before mother. Once again, God is putting humanity before Mother Nature. Mother can feel her heart deteriorating. Mother and Him decided to celebrate the critical success of his work but having a quiet dinner, alone as one. This dinner is interrupted by the arrival of spectators, people who seem worship His work. Mother wants Him to get rid of them, but Him wants them there. This is God, wanting to be worshiped. His creation loves him after the Bible is given to them and he can’t get enough of it. Mother Nature continually wonders why she is not good enough for Him. We are then introduced to Herald, who is played by Kristen Wiig. Herald is Hims publisher in the film. I believe this is a take on the pastors of the world, people that preach the gospel. Soon, mothers home is once again filled with people. It is evident that they worship Him, who is overjoyed with the attention he is being shown. But the strangers start entering the house unannounced, entering the house through back doors, then, waiting in long lines to enter the home, then resulting to just breaking in. They fight to get a look at HIm. They make shrines for Him, hang his picture all over the home, they dance in his name, they worship Him as a deity. Mother screams at the people to leave, for she is pregnant with His child and cannot take the chaos that is ensuing. But the strangers steal, they curse at her, they make advances even though she is married, they are rude, and belligerent. To worship their god (Him) they completely and utterly disrespect mother nature. Soon the home is turned into a literal war-zone. There are police, rebels, explosions, gunshots, the whole nine. This scene is CHAOS. This is take on the infighting between humans over religion and its effect on earth. People are held as slaves, and one of the masters is the Herald, who was supposed to be preaching the gospel. I believe that this is supposed to be a look at the corrupt pastors and clergymen, that preach one thing, and live life as another. Mother is very close to having her child, and soon finds her way back to Him, through all of the fighting. Him reopens his study (The Garden of Eden) in order for his son, THE Son to be born. When he is born, the strangers outside the locked study become silent. They wait to see the child of God. Mother refuses to let Him touch their son however. For a split second she falls a sleep, and Him snatches the child from her and allows his creation, humanity, to take the baby (he says that they just want to touch him). Mother is distraught and pushes through the crown to find her baby, and when she does she sees for a second that the baby breaks his neck being amongst the strangers. This is a parallel to the killing of Jesus. God gave humanity his only son to act as their savior and in return, humans killed him. When mother reaches the alter, she sees that the strangers have completely dismembered her only son, and are eating him. This is an obvious parallel to the body of Christ being blood and wine consumed by his devotees. She screams and starts to attack the strangers. The strangers then jump her, kicking and beating her into a pulp. Him comes to her aid, stressing that he only wanted to help his creation, and that he didn’t believe that they would kill their son. Mother runs down to the basement of the house where her organs are located (remember that she is one with the house) and blows it up. Mother Nature has killed off humanity, Gods second most revered creation, in order to keep them from harming Earth anymore than they already have. Him and Mother survive the explosion. Him is unscathed but Mother is burned, scorched beyond repair. She allows Him to take her heart so that he can start anew. Him reaches into her chest and pulls out her heart, which contains a crystal, a crystal just like the one that he cherished so much in the begging of the movie. He puts the crystal on a mantel and we are brought back to the opening scene, the restoration of a ruined house. we see a woman rise from the bed in the same way Jennifer Lawrence did in the opening scene. But the woman is different. Him, has started anew. Mother Nature, killed off humanity in order for God to start over. It is a cycle of trial and error, and it never ends, God will always create from the ground up in an attempt to perfect his second most revered creation behind nature, humanity. This movie is exhilarating. Every person on this planet has a differing opinion, but this movie is near PERFECT in my eyes. I have never seen a movie that was so tantalizing, claustrophobic, and breathtaking. Aronofsky offers his heart out to us, telling us the ultimate tale, the tale of creation and destruction. The tale of life, and the tale of death. I give this movie a 9.8/10. It blew me away. The only regret I have is that in seeing this, I feel a movie can never make me feel the way this did again. Now I’m not religious, but in terms of Aronofsky’s “mother!”, seeing is definitely believing.
Genesis 3 - 4
Genesis Chapter 3
Chapter three is one that I really struggle within the Bible for a few reasons. I ask myself why the serpent chose to attack Eve in the first place. Was it random? Did it matter?
He makes Eve doubt the word of God with a “But did he REALLY say…” Eve reiterates what she has been told here – and accurately so.
He makes him doubt again by saying that SURELY you won’t actually die. Then she looks at the fruit and makes a bad call. She sees that the fruit would allow her to gain wisdom. Wisdom is the knowledge of what is good and what is evil. Here’s the real kicker for me: ADAM WAS WITH HER THE WHOLE TIME. Men like to say that the fall was completely on the woman, but Adam was with her and remained silent. He did not participate in the conversation or acknowledge what was going on. He remained silent in the face of evil. Which allowed Eve to face the serpent alone and fall into doubt. It is not the fault of one, but the fault of both that allowed the world to fall into sin. Not to mention that Adam ate the apple anyway. He was silently persuaded as well.
The first consequence that Adam and Eve experience regarding their disobedience is Shame. This is still in accordance with what we experience today when we disobey. We feel ashamed. Shame is the weight of Sin on the human Soul.
When Adam and Ever hear God walking through the garden, their first instinct is to hide their shame. I find God’s response here very interesting because the question He asks is revealing to what is going on in Adam and Eve’s individual souls at this point in time. The question he asks is, “Where are you?”
Sin drags us away from God and shadows us from communion and relationship with him. God knows where we are, but Sin makes our Souls less recognizable.
The second consequence that Adam and Eve bring upon themselves is blame. They try to pass the blame around. Adam hands it to Eve and Eve hands it to the serpent. They are trying to play Hot Potato with the sin they have just conceived within their lives. This is something that we see small children do. They LOVE to blame a fault or trouble on someone else. This is instinctive. You can watch a 2-year old child blame the dog for something you SAW them do two seconds ago. And the situation is laughably frustration for parents – I think that this is what God was experiencing at this time. He SAW these two idiots eat from the tree. He SAW them run to hide their nakedness. Yet, just like a parent who is trying to coax their child out of hiding, he asks “Where are you?” Even though He can plainly see them. Because of the basic principle of parenting. You want your children to come to you. You want them to own up to whatever it was they did on their own. You want them to simply tell the truth. We know that when we tell the truth the consequences are generally less severe.
This makes me wonder about our punishment:
Woman’s being that we will suffer during childbirth, “desire” her husband and that he will rule over you.
Man’s being that he will have to toil the earth for sustenance and the earth will resist being farmed, and that death will be introduced unto man.
Then, of course, we are banished from the Garden.
I wonder about the punishment of woman because what does it mean for her desire to be for her husband and that he will rule over us??? Man’s consequences seem so straight forward, but women’s punishment is unclear.
From some light reading, it seems that many people believe that the desire spoke of here is some kind of sexual desire – but others believe that it is the desire to dominate the man and see herself as more powerful or above the man. I can understand that because I am seeing some of that today where women believe that they are better than men. God sees this as a consequence of our sin of not consulting with our partner on certain decisions. God also says that man will rule over us. Now, this could be interpreted in a couple of ways. That Man was always meant to rule over Woman and thereby validating a patriarchal society. OR you could see it for what it is. The man’s desire will be to rule and dominate over the woman creating a power struggle between the two that would negate each other and create a nonfunctioning society.
The way that I see it: Men and women were made to be equal parts of a functioning society. We were to consult with each other about major decisions and reinforce within one another the goodness the positive choices. We cannot act alone or try to dominate one another. This attempt to dominate is a consequence of our sin. We should strive to act as partners as ONE FLESH. One body and become the people we were meant to be.
Genesis Chapter 4
So this is the Cain and Abel story. Abel brings fat portions of the first slaughter of his flock while Cain brings some fruits of the soil. Now, there isn’t any clarification on this part here. We are not told why exactly God chooses to reject Cain’s offering. I can infer there that it might be because Cain’s offering was half-hearted. He did not bring “first-fruits” which would be the first harvest and normally those are the best fruits. In contrast, Abel does bring the best of the best from his flock.
Instead of taking this admonishment from God and choosing to become better through this, he opts for jealousy and rage. God tells him to let go of these feelings because Sin is crouching outside his door waiting for the opportunity to strike. Cain does not listen and allows this rage to fester and eventually straight up murders his brother in a field.
God ask Cain, “Where is your brother?” And Cain, like his mother and father before him chooses to hide his sin. Even through God had given him multiple chances to change his ways and even to own up to this horrible deed. Cain literally SASSES God and says, “IDK. What am I The keeper of my brother?”
Like he actually thinks that he can fool God into just LETTING HIM GET AWAY WITH LITERAL MURDER.
God basically curses Cain for this – he will no longer be able to farm the land and he is forced to restlessly wander the earth. He even says that no one will kill Cain because he will place a mark on him. (This, again, implies that there are other people out there in the world. NOT JUST ADAM AND EVE). In the “Antiquities of the Jews”, it does happen to mention that Adam and Eve had daughters, but we have no idea what their names were.
Even Cain’s descendants murder people. His great-great-great grandson Lamech was a murderer too.
Cain’s descendants were some pretty industrious people through. They fathered some interesting industries: livestock, music, and blacksmithing. Kinda interesting.
Ooh – Cain apparently didn’t stop the sinning with murder. He just went and robbed/raped people and created the idea of property and weights and measures for selling things, and that he was “intolerable in war”. (Capitalism begins!) IN the “Antiquities of the Jews”, it even says that these people were innocent of these things until Cain came and corrupted them.
Cain’s descendants live in the land of Nod East of Eden.
Genesis Chapter 5
This just seems like a historical account of the first sons and their lineage. The only interesting piece of this for me is that one of Seth’s descendants was named Enoch (weird that it is the same name as Cain’s first son) who walked with God and didn’t die but was instead taken away by God.
