AITA for Blocking a Guy After Giving Mixed Signals?

I (28M) reconnected with a dude I knew from high school and college (24M) last year through Snapchat. Someone we both knew from college told me that he really wanted to talk to me wanted to apologize for putting me through hell in college so I decided to friend him. I was never the best of friends with this guy and had issues with him in the past but when he started messaging and talking to me it seemed like he really wanted to make amends so I decided to give friendship a chance.

For some background information, I didn’t spend much time with him in high school. I hardly knew the guy, he seemed a little bit strange, but harmless. Sometimes we played basketball together. He said a couple of weird things that I didn’t realize the significance of the time.

I ran into him again back when we were in college. I thought it was slightly strange how we ended up ay the same one but dismissed it. At the time I just thought it was cool that someone from my high school was there and also attended the paranormal club. Then I found that he had undergone a huge personality change since I saw him last, and definitely for the worst.

He started spreading rumors about people in the group, turning them against each other because he thought it was funny. I lost a couple of my friends this way. Some of the rumors he spread about me in particular resulted in campuswide harassment. I also was briefly under investigation by campus security because he started a rumor that I sold dope (I don’t). He harassed me in other ways as well, calling me names, and knocking me over when I was on my bike. He also vandalized it by ripping the air tubes out of the tires. Of course, I wanted nothing more to do with the guy.

Flashback over, back to the present day. At this point, we have been talking for a few weeks when he revealed that he had feelings for me since high school and had apparently been trying to hit on me. I would have rejected the guy on the spot because even though I’m bi the age difference was too big. I was nearly 18, he was 14, hell no.

He told me that in college, he started the rumors to get my attention. He said he felt like there was no other way to get me to pay attention to him other than being a complete and total asshole. He also said that he intentionally ruined my reputation because he felt like I was so popular, he never would’ve gotten the chance to approach me otherwise. Never once have, I been a popular guy, I don’t know where he gets this bullshit. However, he apologized and sounded sincere at the time. I decided to try to forgive him.

He told me that he still had feelings for me. At the time I wasn’t really even considering relationships. However, considering that I’ve been through the ringer with people who have commitment issues, and this guy managed to maintain interest for practically a decade, I told him that I would think about it when he asked me on a date.

Then, however, he started acting really weird. When we did a video chat he started saying certain things that made me uncomfortable and kept on with it even after I told him to knock it off. Kept pestering me for nudes (I said no). Also kept calling me a girl (I’m a trans guy and commenting on how feminine my body was. He also said that if I didn’t go out with him, he’d make sure I paid for it later. That scared the shit out of me.

After that, I distanced myself from him. I no longer answered his calls or texts. Because I am not familiar with how Snapchat works, I did not block him, because I didn’t know how. However, I ignored his messages for months. I read them. Pretty messed up stuff. He told me that he would keep messaging me until I said yes.

Fast forward several months and I am in a healthy relationship with another trans guy. But then it occurs to me that the dude in the paragraph above would probably find a way to mess it up because that’s what he did with my friendships in college as well as anyone who showed romantic interest in me so we kept it very hush-hush. I decided to tie up loose ends today and tell him that I was Already in a relationship. He told me he didn’t care. He kept trying to push a friends with benefits thing. I told him no. He told me he wasn’t going to give up, no matter what I said, or did. At that point, I lost my temper and blocked him.

The reason I think I’m the asshole is because for a moment I did consider going out with him before he started acting creepy. I feel like I’m the asshole because by doing that, I technically lead him on and I should have told him right off the bat that his behavior was freaking me out, and I was no longer interested, but I chose to just disappear instead.

Do you have any advice for someone going through the "people turnover" you described? I'm really questioning some current friendships but I'm scared of the consequences. Like I know if I lose these friends, there will be a massive hole in my life that cannot be patched easily or quickly

i'm going about it in a "demote, promote, or terminate" kind of way atm, while also being aware of my emotional capacity. there's this really close friend i have, but now i'm realizing she's not the best for me. cutting her off cold turkey would be too much for me, so for now i've resorted to demoting her--in my mind, she's no longer that close friend i thought she was. she's more of an enjoyment friend i'd call up to go out places w, pass the time w, etc... i wouldn't trust her w personal details the way i did. i'm heeding my limits while also doing something about this situation.

other friends i'm straight up just "terminating." something is fundamentally not working in our friendship, and i'd rather deal w the temporary grief over the long-term misery of keeping them in my life. that's how i'm going about it--i'm weighing the temporary grief against the long-term consequences of continuing to invest. & there are also a friend or two i'm promoting :) realizing they're actually really dope and they're the ones i should be investing in the most instead. so we'll see how that goes !

6 months ago this would have hurt like hell, but rn i'm honestly in a state of calm bc my life is so full without these people already that i can just double down on other areas of my life. studying, working out, reading, writing, other hobbies i wanna take up, a future i'm really excited about, being more in touch w my boundaries... just been a super therapeutic time for me. i know my world extends beyond these people. i guess what i'm trying to say is on the chance i lose literally everybody, i would not let there be a gaping hole for me to be in pain about. i'd just mend it w other facets of my life that are super vibrant already. i've learned a long time ago that friends, however much u adore them, should be an augmentation instead of the foundation of ur life itself. and i'm also the kind of person who'd rather be alone than surrounded by people i don't connect with tbh

knock-knock – “Hey, Miss Velour?”

Romero leaned against the archway that lead into Velvet Velour’s inner sanctum in Vesuvius, watching as she straightened one of her posters. “Issac sent me over here,” he continued, allowing himself a nice long look at Velvet’s ass as he spoke. Fringe benefit of being Isaac Abram’s ghoul number one. . . “Said you needed something?”

Velvet turned slowly and sensually to face him, bright red lips curling in a smile that was – rather less friendly than he was used to. “Well well – if it isn’t Mr. Oblivious himself,” she said, sultry tone rather at odds with both her words and the sharp look she was giving him. “What I need, Romero, is for you to pull your head out of your rear.”

Romero blinked. Blinked again. “Uh – sorry, not following what you’re talking about here,” he said, rubbing the back of his head. “What the hell did I do?”

“It’s more what you haven’t done,” Velvet replied, folding her arms across her ample chest. “Really, Romero – this long, and you still haven’t said those three little words?”

“. . .still not getting it.”

Velvet sighed. “Oh dear – Isaac said you were ignoring your own feelings, but he didn’t warn me how much. I thought for sure you had an inkling.”

“Nope,” Romero said, shaking his head. “Whatever you’re mad at me for, you’re gonna have to spell it out.” He smiled sheepishly, hoping to hold off a potential vampiric temper tantrum – Velvet wasn’t really the type, but. . .better safe than sorry. “Use small words.”

“All right then.” She leaned forward in what would have been a really distracting way if she hadn’t been hitting him with such a firm, scolding gaze. “You’re in love with Angeline, you dope.”

For the second time in less than five minutes, Romero found himself blinking rapidly. “Uh. . .I – I think you’ve got the wrong idea about us,” he said slowly, knowing that Velvet usually didn’t like being contradicted but unable to help himself. “We’re friends. With benefits.” He grinned. “Some pretty awesome benefits.”

“No, you’re basically boyfriend and girlfriend, but neither of you seem to realize it,” Velvet retorted, rolling her eyes. “Isaac’s told me all about it – how much time you spend together, how you’re always talking about her, how you’ve been walking around with this extra little spring in your step. You’ve got it bad for the girl, and you won’t even acknowledge it!” She stepped forward and prodded him in the chest. “I know you’re not really one for romance, but surely even you can figure out when Cupid’s arrow has hit you?”

“I don’t – Angeline’s just – we’re friends!” Romero protested, glancing down at the finger and back. “Really!”

“Yes, and you ought to be something else too,” Velvet responded. “With roses and chocolates and fancy jewelry. And less gunplay.”

“Hey, Angeline likes the range.”

“All right, then at least give her flowers before you go!” Velvet shook her head. “You really think all you feel for her is friendship?”

“Yeah, I do!” Romero said, frowning. “Angeline’s awesome, I ain’t gonna say otherwise – she’s really smart, and super organized, and when you can get her to laugh she’s really fucking cute–”

“How do you not hear yourself right now?” Velvet cut in, expression both frustrated and deeply amused at the same time – Romero hadn’t been aware you could fit both emotions on the same face. “Really – how many of your other conquests have you said looked cute when they laugh?”

“Normally I’m hoping they don’t start cracking up when they see what’s downstairs,” Romero shot back. “But Angeline. . .okay, so we spend a lot of time together! She could use the company! And sure, I think she’s a hell of a looker, because she is! And I like talking to her, because she’s pretty interesting once you get get her to speak up, and I like making her smile because her whole face gets really glowy, and I like having her around because otherwise it’s just me and the TV and I end up really missing her when she’s not there, and – and. . .”

He paused. Thought for a second about what he’d just said. Then his face met his hand as he groaned. “Oh. Uh. Shit.”

Velvet laughed. “There we go,” she said, a teasing lilt to her voice as she slung an arm around his shoulders. “Now can we talk about how you should be getting her flowers?”

Bittersweet hours because my favourite Youtuber quits YT this weekend since he's graduating 😭 Anthpo - you'll be missed!!

Can't overstate how much his videos helped me when I was going through my roughest moments of social anxiety. He's just a guy in college that makes dorky videos of himself and his friends taking part in college activities and it's just- so fun and genuine. His channel is such a breath of fresh air in today's YouTube climate as its clear he's not doing it for the goal of gaining popularity or money - but rather making memories with his friends that he cares about. This whole channel is just dope as hell - wholesome - preaches the power of friendship and teaches you the importance of living in the moment, and getting out in the world and doing *something*. When I go to university in September, I hope to immerse myself with similarly great friends and to not be ashamed about being a lil' goofy <3 - man has some genuinely good advice to live by.

Larys. Hands down. That man is Unwell And A Freak (derogatory) & I have to really sit there & think to get into his head & root around for motivations every time he's supposed to show up in my fic. Like, I know what he'd do, vaguely at least, but getting at the detail or the why is a struggle (HBO, I'm in your walls. Please let me see his characterization, I unfortunately need it. I'm trying to parse how fucking weird to make him)

😎: What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?

Tbh, I'm not sure if I have much preference on that end (even in my own approach, catch me mashing both those ideas together & making them get along). I'm not picky on "how close to canon we stick," I'm moreso picky on "make your changes, however wild or minimal, believable by knowing the rules before you potentially break them." That & "I want the concept & plot to fuck severely." I don't want to sign up for the long haul if I don't think it's dope as hell.

💌: Is there a favorite trope you like to write?

Is daddy issues a trope? Tbh, though, I don't really do enough long fic (SOTF is the first one I've dedicated myself to since high school & will probably be the first one I've ever finished), so I can't really say if there's something I keep coming back to. I know I probably reuse character types a lot, but I'm not sure if that's necessarily the same thing? (Seriously, though, one day I'm gonna wind up info dumping the more concrete OCs from my more book based GOT-era AU & a lot of the stuff that exists within SOTF will probably click into place like "oh, you just Do That")

"Three" (Agent 3/Captain 3) [they/them]

- I've seen people give Three some of the most batshit insane backstories imaginable and 90% of them are dumb.

- Three was just some bloke who caught wind of some fun new underground sport and moved to the city to get in on that action.

- They ran into Cuttlefish soon after moving to the city, and well, the rest is history.

- Before devoting most of their time to agent work in Splatoon 2, they spent most of their time grinding ranked battles. They never joined a team or anything of the sort, which they eventually did end up regretting.

- Splat2/Octo Expansion happens almost exactly as it does in canon, but i think the sanitization scar is dope as hell so I'm stealing that idea. also they were hospitalized for a bit after that whole debacle

- After recovering from the hospital, it took a while for them to grapple with the consequences of their actions (inadvertently participating in the subjugation of a minority race), and they'd truly never been the same since.

- Their relationship with Agent 8 is complicated. They tolerate Four and used to hang out more often, but have since grown apart. Their closest friends are the Squid Sisters. They still hold immense respect for Cuttlefish.

- they used to be more expressive and lively in their youth, but these days they rarely emote or communicate at all. their voice is hoarse from lack of use and often texts people to communicate (i.e. Moeka, Steins Gate).

- their injuries from years of agent work have caused several permanent injuries, and they often use a cane to get around, not unlike Cuttlefish.

- Misc: favorite band is Squid Squad, transfemme, outdated sense of fashion (Splat1 only), favorite weapon is the Splat1 Hero Shot, and they have recently taken up coaching an up and coming Anarchy team. used to be very good at skeeball. occasionally dj's.

- the most normal of upbringings ever. grew up in the splatoon suburbs and did all the normal school shit like sports and clubs and shit. kind of an overachiever but ultimately unimportant

- their reasoning for coming to the city was ultimately the same as Three's, but they never really moved out from their home until many years later.

- despite being an overachieving nerd in school, they still mostly kept to themselves until the events of Splat2. Marie and Four had a very formal, impersonal relationship for much of the campaign, but Marie's dubious comment about "sweaty pits" caused Four to get uncharacteristically annoyed at her. The two started to bicker more often since then, and the friendship was formed not long after.

- after the events of Splat2, they spent some time aiding on the Octarian integration program, but went back to focusing on school not long after. After graduating, they moved out from their parent's place, and she now lives with Marie.

- Angie (once short for Angela, now short for Angelo) is a transmasc individual with no interest in biological transition. She loves his body just the way it is.

- personality wise, he is a generally upbeat person with a somewhat sharp tongue. prone to being embarrassed. she tends to be quiet around strangers, but is quite outspoken around those she's comfortable with. always loves to be out doing something.

- While not romantically involved with Marie, they are still very close, forming a near-familial bond with one another. They still bicker a lot. His relationship is Callie is a bit strained, because she never knew who she was before the kidnapping, and everyone who knew Cal beforehand says that she acts differently than before. She still views Three as one of her friends, but wonders why they ended up withdrawing away from him. Four had a crush on Eight, and whether or not this crush has since dissipated is unknown.

- misc: favorite 'mainstream' bands are Diss-Pair and SashiMori, tho his taste is more underground (hence not knowing the Squid Sisters). favorite weapon are the Splat Dualies. once climbed to the peak of X rank before calling it quits. unsure of where to go with life after school. no longer an agent for personal reasons.

- former Octarian weapon maintenance lackey, never quite good enough to reach the elite status. After the events of Splat1, she set her sights on the surface for a better life, but was soon sucked into the horrors of the Deepsea Metro.

- her time on the Metro was terrible, and it still haunts her dreams from time to time. the passage of time was almost indeterminate, and the guilt of killing zombified members of her own race for her own freedom tore at her very being.

- after saving the world (lol), she ended up staying at the Houzuki estate for some time with OTH. they helped integrate her into Inkling society, teach her the language of the surface, etc etc etc. eventually, Eight moved out after wanting some more freedom (and a lot of distance between her and Pearl). They still left her room open for whenever she may need it

- most of her time immediately after OE was spent discovering her interests and hobbies, which included skating, poetry, music, weapon maintenance/modification (lol) and [REDACTED]. tried out turf and ranked but grew bored of it quickly (she is the most skilled person in the 'verse).

- not an agent. never was. never wanted to be. still on good terms with Cuttlefish regardless, and they hang out semi regularly.

- Although she lives with Three currently, her relationship (situationship) with them is complicated. She views Four as a good friend, but recent events have only heightened her opinion on her. Cuttlefish is a bro. Although she and Pearl argue a lot, there's nothing either of them wouldn't do for the other. The worst of best friends. Eight took her name so she could inherit her fortune when she dies. Although she loves Marina, she can't help but worry about her. Struck up a very deep and long lasting friendship with Callie via... unusual circumstances.

- personality wise, Scarlett has bouts of rude bluntness, and a somewhat vulgar vocabulary (no thanks to Pearl). This gives off the impression that she is a mean individual, but she merely has a tough exterior. While she is the most practical of them all, she is not immune to infectious bouts of sillyness. Loves to poke fun whenever she can. occasionally soft spoken and prone to fits of shyness.

- misc: transfemme (no cis agents lmfao), favorite non-SS band is Diss-Pair, though she also fucks with Hightide Era and hopes they make a return. favorite weapon is the E-liter 4K, though she is also fascinated by the Dual Squelcher. works for Sheldon in the Ammo Knights in the Square. loves sleeping. promiscuous. a bit slow to pick up on certain social cues, preferring people to be blunt with her.

Okokkok so Janette. *claps hands togheter* Her full name is Janette Biswar but went as Jane B in highschool since she was embarrassed of her last name (nobody could pronounce it). Her mum was called Diana and she is the second person to ever run the cult which is called Children Of The Woods and its dedicated to the monsters in this world. Like seeing them as a gods or gods creatures. (Fun fact this world is like our own but with monsters living alongside people :]])

Soo Janette had to compete with her best friend Huan Lin who was the son of an important member of the cult, for the leadership. She ended up getting it by killing Huan :[ And she has nightmares to this day about it.

She adopted a kid named Oliver which she’s technically the aunt of but his parents died when he was younger so she took him in. Janette, this is now in the storyline of when the main story is set btw, meets Adele Beckett, who is Ryan’s mum.

And they kind of have a relationship? Not romantic in any sense cuz Janette is aromantic and Adele is cheating on her husband Josh. And their whole thing is that Janette had told Adele about her being aro and explaining how she didn’t want anything romantic over and over and Adele pretended to get it and later in the story Adele brings it up in an argument. Adele is very aro and transphobic which is like- girl nooo. And Janette constantly offers that the two have a friendship outside their relationship and Adele always denies it since she wants a romantic relationship (douchebag characters andbskjd)

And Janette dies twice in the story, which is first to a molotov cocktail fire (molotov cocktail is like a bomb made with alcohol) set by Adele and then she gets revived by Sprites, one of the monsters, and at the moment she has blue highlights in her eyes and every time her skin is cut, a new blue flower sprouts from the cut.

Thoughts During TOH 3x03 Watching and Dreaming

Here we go. The finale. This is it.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t record my reactions to the first half of this so some general thoughts before I continue.

So, seeing kind of King, Luz, and Eda’s worst fears be reaffirmed by the dreams was the worst, but we also got out of the actual dreams a lot quicker than I expected. It’s fine, I understand.

Raine needs to rest after all this.

We’re actually teaching the Collector about actual friendship and kindness and the permanence of death, huh.

The fact that Luz actually reassured the Collector that what they did wasn’t wrong when they tried to apply their lessons of forgiveness and kindness to Belos but it’s just the issue itself is so much more complicated than that. That kind of approach isn’t going to work on someone like Belos. I just really appreciate her letting them know that they didn’t do anything wrong.

And finally, before I continue, Luz’s “death” got me to cry. Especially when it showed Camilla crying even as a puppet like she knew! Ugh. Pain!

Okay, back to the live reacting.

Another SoMa AU?! It's more likely than you think. Or, just as likely? I mean, look at the state of us on this site!

Summary: Some say that how you spend New Year's Eve indicates how the rest of your year pans out. What does it mean then, when Maka (an occasionally frustrated bookseller) and Soul (a sometimes famous actor) meet in an unlikely place on the night in question? A group of drunk idiots passed by, singing a spirited round of “Never Gonna Give You Up” – lyrics and laughs all going up as puffs of white in the cold air. At least someone was having fun tonight. It just wasn’t her.

“Look, Maks, it’s New Year’s Eve. The big NYE!” 

“You keep on saying that. It doesn’t mean anything to me anymore, Star. All I hear is you repeating the date over and over again. ‘It’s December 31st. It’s December 31st!’ It’s like listening to the world’s worst newscaster. Is the weather forecast up next? I’m on the edge of my seat here.”

“Was that supposed to be a gotcha or something? Have to tell ya, it wasn’t very clever. Not up to your usual par, Albarn.” 

“Yeah? Well, we’ve been out for a while. I’m tired.” It wasn’t that Maka didn’t like a good time out. She’d just had enough experience with what actually constituted a good night out to know that this wasn’t it. Tsubaki wasn’t with them, for one, and Tsubaki was always better at handling Star than Maka was. For two, she had things to get done tomorrow. Like laundry and dishes, ya know? So she made a show of rolling her eyes, digging the heel of her shoe into the pavement, and crossing her arms tightly in front of her. 

“Oh, come off it! It’s not even eleven o’ clock. I’m not going home until at least 2am, and neither are you. How I spend tonight is gonna be how the rest of my year pans out. And I need to get fucked. You get me?”

“You need to get fucked? You realize that has a negative connotation, right? Like, you want your year to turn out shit?”

“Whatever! What are you, the connotation committee? Stop clenching your asshole alre–”

Maka shot her head up from her moping to punch him in the arm. He didn’t flinch in the slightest. He did, however, start clapping in applause. 

“Yeah! That’s it! Keep up that energy!”

“You’re such a dick!”

“What else is new?” he asked with a sigh. “Listen, Maka, this place is classy . Shy Tom X is deejaying–”

“Who is Shy To–?”

“The deejay! Maka, I’m wearing my Party Shirt tonight. I look hot as hell! I need to be stared at, objectified, put on a pedestal like the god that I am! Now, we’re gonna go in there so that the patrons of this classy-ass joint can do exactly that! It’ll be like a New Year’s gift, from us to them.”

“How altruistic of us. Christ…” 

“Exactly. Altruistic-like, yeah?”

She’d known Star long enough to know which arguments were losing battles. Really, considering how stubborn and conceited he was, it was most of them. Especially when they concerned his stupid Party Shirt. Anyway, she did go through the trouble of dressing up herself; eyeliner and updo to boot.

“Fine,” she sighed in defeat. 

At which, Star draped an arm around her shoulders with a loud “YEAH, BABY!” before steering into the club so he could listen to the dope beats of Shy Tom X and, fingers-crossed, get fucked.

Vito on Friendship & Loyalty

Spoilers for Mafia II and Mafia III under the cut.

Vito, the cold-hearted calm rational

Contrary to the wiki writers’ belief, Vito values friendship and sentiment above anything else. He could be called naive (especially in his line of work) but it’s so hard to blame him. 

Mafia II: Henry & Leo

It’s both damning and redeeming for Vito, this trait.

Without helping Henry, without being his friend, Henry would have an easier time pulling the “this is only business” card when being asked a favor by Vito (to spare Leo). 

(Assuming there was nothing else going on behind the door when Vito stands there and tries to smoke with his hands shaking, Henry literally stared at Leo for a few long seconds, probably replaying the kicked-puppy look Vito had given him just before leaving the kitchen, and then let his hand fall with an eloquent “fuck” and told Leo to get the hell out before he changes his mind. Or maybe he changed his mind when he took the shot and deliberately missed.)

(It’s interesting, and painful, and beautiful, to think of this as Henry’s unintentional way of redeeming himself. After everything he’s pulled Vito into, he saves his life with this decision. He is also the reason Vito needs to be saved in the first place, but that’s how the whole game goes.)

Without helping Henry, without being his friend, Vito wouldn’t have gotten into... any of the shit he’d gotten into, honestly. (With the exception of the army.) I also think - because it is never said otherwise - that Vito has suspicions, maybe truly thinks - that he had been fucked over by Henry, in the end. He was the one who seemed to be able to accept the whole idea (where Joe only shoots it down without second thoughts) after being told by Wong. And when he gets told so (as a fact) by Leo, I don’t think he truly has it in him to argue otherwise. 

The only times Vito is truly upset with Henry is when:

a) Henry shows up after being a stranger for years (the cold act goes away embarrassingly quickly, though) - after Henry abandoned him.

b) Henry says he has to shoot Leo, no matter what (”dammit, Henry, I’m your friend here!”) - when Henry seems to prioritize the mission over Vito, over their friendship, their past, the fact that Vito would have done the same and more for him, and when Henry seems to be unperturbed about the fact that Falcone is being a hypocritical dick with the dope, as if the lies and two-faced philosophy didn’t matter.

c) Henry omits the fact that they are not going to just get rid of all the dope at once, but sell it instead in smaller doses. - Henry purposely avoided this bit of information because he could tell that Vito would probably refuse to play the part. A betrayal of trust. 

He forgives all that. After the last mention of Henry in the car with Leo, he never speaks his name again. (Let’s ignore that the game is just full of plot holes, let’s see this as Vito’s coming to terms with Henry’s ultimate betrayal.) 

Without helping Leo, risking everything, he would have been killed after the fuck-up with the Tongs. 

Leo, technically, did nothing wrong - from The Family’s point of view. He had repaid what was owed. 

The fact he didn’t include Joe in the deal (whacking Falcone) was a dick move only from a friendship perspective, and I think Vito wouldn’t hold it against Leo as much as he did if Leo wasn’t a father figure to him. He genuinely liked the old man, he risked everything for him without a second thought. 

Leo didn’t save Joe (even though, presumably, he had the power to do so, although that’s left for us to wonder about) while knowing he was closer than a brother to Vito. 

Getting out of the whole mess alive wasn’t entirely a win for Vito. (The ending never felt like a good ending, no matter that the player/Vito survived.) He was never truly grateful for being allowed to stay in the business, to be a goddamned mole and to work with people he couldn’t trust for years to come. He never stopped looking for Joe, he never stopped hoping, he spent a lot of time and money on tracking down Joe’s killers. He never forgave Leo.

A Leo Afterthought

(And it all makes me think that Leo kind of wanted to have Vito inside Falcone’s family from the very beginning - and Joe was a good excuse. He told Vito it’s because of Joe – and Vito accepts that, because yeah, in the years spent in the same goddamned suite in the prison, they talked. Leo knows how important Joe is to Vito. Therefore it is logical and nice of the old man to take that into account.

I don’t think Leo took that into account. As in, not the way Vito thinks, expects. He probably knew that Vito would be of better use in a different family. Leo knew that being Vito’s friend is much more secure position than being the capo di tutti capi himself. He had time (too much, I’d say) to get to know Vito, he could tell Vito is prone to sentiment, attachment. He also knew that keeping Vito on his good side would get him results. If Falcone planned to do something that would somehow hurt Vinci’s family, Vito wouldn’t give a fuck. But if Falcone planned to do something that would hurt Leo Galante specifically, Vito (assuming he would know about it) would tell him. The incident with Henry only proved him right. 

Also, I am almost certain that if Vito and Joe, while trying to kill Alberto Clemente, saw Henry sitting there in the hotel room with Clemente, they would never go through the attack. 

They both didn’t care for their Families and duties as much as for those they considered friends.)

Mafia III: Lincoln & Alma

Then - Vito gets to New Bordeaux, having to work for Leo Galante he now hates. He finally sees him as a member of The Family, not family. And he is bitter as hell about it. He lost Frankie, he lost Henry (be it to the Feds or the Tongs), he lost Leo, he lost Joe. Now he is stuck in this city, working for someone who hates his guts and wants to find the smallest excuse for feeding him to the fish, too. 

In the end, he gets fucked over again. By Sal. I don’t think he even tried to get close to that man.

Vito, who sees value in friendship and loyalty, and works on these principles, always has, on one side. On the other - Sal Marcano. The exact opposite.

I cannot imagine how would that feel for a 26 year old Vito, still mourning, lonely as fuck, being thrown out of Empire Bay to the lion’s den. He gets River Row, the biggest dump, and makes it profitable with a lot of work. He sends messages back to Galante, he meets Alma. 

Alma is probably the first friendly face, someone Vito grows attached to (against his better judgement, he probably thinks), someone he can trust, in the end. There are no interactions in the game, but they talk about each other with loving exasperation, with respect. I don’t have to see them together to know they care about each other, genuinely so.

Then Lincoln comes, and - oh, along with him, the potential of a close associate, or a painful betrayal. Vito sees the ruthless kid-turned-killing-machine and knows he can’t risk getting too attached. 

He never stops expecting the betrayal. He is overjoyed if it doesn’t come. He is disgusted if it does. (Depends on the player, of course.)

And as @tommytranselo​ mentioned in some (frankly amazing) posts - with Vito being the one offering a doctor, a protection, asking if Lincoln sleeps or eats - this could play into that theory. That he gets attached, he cares, he wants to trust and be trusted, it comes naturally to him. In his life, he's had only a few close people and he thinks he had lost them all (and not all of them to death).

I think Vito tries to make a connection the moment he meets Lincoln for the first time with Sal and Giorgi by his side. When Lincoln comes to fish Vito’s ass out of the freezer, Vito is understandably keeping his distance. This is strictly business, it seems (and he really, really, needs to keep this in mind so he wouldn’t get burned). Lincoln needs some help - money, people, because you can single-handedly bring down the Empire, but you can’t single-handedly hold it for long - and Vito is already a dead man walking. He needs to expect Lincoln will try to get rid of him, in the end, too. 

But at the same time - Lincoln got fucked over because he was loyal. Lincoln did all this for love, for family, for things Vito would die for, and kill for, too. Lincoln paid the highest price for trusting someone he shouldn’t have, loving someone he shouldn’t have. Lincoln made the mistakes Vito kept making, too, over and over. 

In Donovan’s files in the menu of the game, you can read Donovan’s analysis of Vito: “Vito toes the line about loyalty and all that other bullshit, but make no mistake -- the man's a killer. If he even thinks you're planning to fuck him, he's coming after you.”

Vito grew absolutely ruthless over the years - because of this constant fuckery going on. Probably going apeshit whenever he met yet another fucker who wanted to mess with him. (Grecco being the most recent example.) I think that working under Sal, he had witnessed this happening so many times that he would have to be mad to think he would be an exception. 

And even though he wouldn’t say anything, I think it would be pretty clear from all the cold but polite encounters those two had to have over the years. Sal knows Vito’s standing on how he treats people around him. Vito knows it’s only a matter of time for him. And if there’s something worse than a simple fucker who fires a few shots at you and openly tries to kill you, it’s a fucker who invites you for a drink and gives you false smiles instead while plotting your death. A fucker who can’t just hate you openly, a fucker who will keep you close first. Before he stabs you in the back.

The Potential Ending (why would you, tho-)

That’s why making him think he will get fucked over again by Lincoln will push him to desperate measures. 

After killing Vito, Lincoln comes to Alma. The conversation goes:

Alma: “He’s dead. isn’t he? Vito.”

Lincoln: “You need to know I never lied to him. He came after me.”

Alma: “When it comes to trust, you are both fucking assholes. You for... whatever bullshit you’re going through. Vito, on account of taking a mountain of shit back in Empire Bay. All because he was a good little soldier. And that’s before whatever happened to that friend of his… Como se llama? Fucking Joe. Vito used to say the two of them always did what they were told. Didn’t stop Joe from getting cut to little bits by his own goddamn people. So what happens now?”

Lincoln: “Do what you’re doing, and keep the money coming.”

Alma: “I can live with that.”

(The tones are important. This sounds very cold when written. Watch the vid if you haven’t.) 

After Lincoln repeatedly asks for Vito’s help with securing the district but doesn’t assign it to him, Vito finally snaps: “Don’t matter your shade, you’re just another two-face scumbag like everybody else. And I’m through with it.”

I Deserved Better

Vito: “I always thought you were different from those other cock-suckers. That fat Derek Pappalardo. Alberto Clemente. Leo Galante. But no, there’s always somebody waitin’ to fuck me.”

Lincoln: “Nobody forced you to get greedy. You could’ve sat back, been content, watched the money roll in. but no, that wasn’t enough.”

Vito: “Fuck you. I gave up everything for this life. Everything! And look where I ended up. I deserved better.” 

It wasn’t that Vito wanted more. Vito wanted to be treated with trust and respect. He was never greedy, he was okay with being what he was as long as there was no bullshit involved. He has always been open about this. “I got no problem being small time as long as it comes to me straight down the line. The way things work. If you ask a man to lock down turf, you put him in charge of it. No question.” (source)

Straight to the point, no bullshit, no lies, no two-faced business. Be either friend, or an enemy, or nobody. Simple as that.

Vito will have more respect for the biggest scumbag there is as long as the said scumbag is straight with people. Hell, it is preferable to get shot between the eyes right away before believing someone to be a friend only to get a knife in the back. It always comes back to this.

No matter how much loyalty and love had cost him so far - he keeps on hoping, caring. He is bitter and angry, tired and broken-hearted, and yet, he cannot help but hope.

Pikachu - Again, he just gives me Pikachu energy. Maybe one of those Pikachu that wears a hat from Pokemon Go? It would be a Pikachu that he hasn’t evolved because he doesn’t want Pikachu to change and become something completely different because he doesn’t want to lose his pal 

Crobat - Just a little fella for a (not-so) little fella. Seriously though I do think he’d have a crobat 

Empoleon - Empoleon is a king. We stan. I also think that Mike would love having an Empoleon. He feels v much like a mainly water type trainer so having a dual type pokemon that has water as one of its types fits for me 

Lapras - Lapras is I think many people’s favourite, just like Mike seems to be a lot of people’s favourites (anyone I ask about him says they think he’s a great character that’s been done dirty by the writing) 

Poliwhirl - Again, another one he gives me the vibe of. Poliwhirl looks like he’d be a bit of a dick but is actually pretty cool 

𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫/𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧

Espeon - El deserves an Espeon after what she’s been through tbh. I think an Espeon would be the perfect companion for her 

Gallade - I had to think about whether she would have a Gallade or Gardevoir and I’ve gone with Gallade because just like El, Gallades are fighters and I think it would fit her vibe as a psychic specialising pokemon trainer so that she has some variety in her team 

Delphox - El is fierce and has a passionate fire within her to protect those she loves and cherishes. A Delphox would be perfect for her 

Munna - A dream pokemon I think would work well with El. It would comfort her after she’s had bad dreams about the past and I think would also help her harness her own psychic powers 

Starmie - A Starmie to symbolise the moment she cherishes of her and Max in Starcourt 

Gothitelle - I absolutely had to represent her bitching, edgier style that she wore at the end of season 2 and Gothitelle is perfect for that 

𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬

Sylveon - Now hear me out. Friendship is very important to will, and an Eevee only evolves into a Sylveon if you have a good enough friendship and bond with it. A Sylveon is absolutely PERFECT for Will 

Mismagius - Looks like a wizard and has the same colour scheme as Will the Wise. There’s no way I wasn’t adding this little guy to his team 

Gengar - This bad boy is a hard hitter and I think Will deserves a Gengar. Gengar supremacy 

Chandlure - Symbolises Will using the lights to communicate with Joyce almost as if he were a ghost using a ouija board 

Pumpkaboo - I wholeheartedly believe Will’s favourite holiday is Halloween and that he wants it to become a national holiday like Christmas and Easter because hell yeah Halloween is dope as hell 

Doublade - Will is a fighter and stronger than I think some people give him credit for. The doublade symbolises that strength within him 

𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫

Magneton - Lucas is a highly underrated character imo. He has a magnetic sort of charm and personality to him and I don’t really know of anyone that doesn’t like Lucas. He needs more screen time and I’m so glad we got to see more of him in volume 2 

Bastiodon - A strong, sturdy pokemon just like Lucas. I really do believe he’s the backbone of the group. He holds the group up and he reaches out to Max and reassures her that he’s there for her to lean on 

Skarmory - Cool, majestic, awesome. Just like Lucas 

Mawile - Something about Lucas gives me the vibe that he would have a Mawile. It’s my favourite steel type and I think it would be Lucas’ too in a modern au 

Bisharp - People underestimate steel types, and Lucas is not one to underestimate. Much like a Bisharp, he will fight you if he has to and he will win 

Bronzong - Similar to Bastiodon, I think Lucas would have a Bronzong to represent how sturdy and reliable he is as a member of the friendship group 

𝐌𝐚𝐱 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝

Blaziken - Fiery and ready to fight, a Blaziken works perfectly for Max. Not only that, but I think it would have a stubborn nature because Max is a little stubborn too 

Toxicroak - Packs a punch and has no mercy. I also feel like Toxicroak would work well with Max because she has the vibe of having both poison types and fighting types 

Marshadow - Much like Marshadow, Max gives me the energy that if it were a modern au she would be the cryptid friend of the friend group. Absolutely wilding and being terrifying yet not terrifying at the same time. She would be a mothman stan 

Sawk - I headcanon that Max would take up martial arts in another life and become a black belt in karate at a young age as well as skateboarding. Max is a bad bitch you can’t tell me otherwise 

Hitmonchan - Best gen 1 fighting type imo. Just like Max is the best girl out of the younger characters 

Emboar - Much like Blaziken, fiery and ready to fight just like Max 

𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫

Venusaur - Bad bitches get the bad bitch pokemon. Venusaur is the best gen 1 starter and I will take no feedback or criticism on that. I also feel that Erica would go for poison type pokemon because of her DnD character Lady Applejack

Roserade - This pokemon looks pretty and harmless, but will not hesitate to put you in your place. This screams Erica for me 

Nidoqueen - Erica is a queen. Also, Nidoqueen is quite powerful and I think people underestimate how strong and badass Erica actually is. Let’s not forget, this girl is 11 years old and fighting shit from the upside down. 11 years old people 

Dragalge - A more elegant looking pokemon that looks like it wouldn’t hurt a fly 

Beedrill - Something about Beedrill feels like Erica’s kind of pokemon. Idk what it is but Beedrill is what I think of when I consider what pokemon Erica would have 

Tentacruel - Like I’ve said, Erica is a bad bitch and deserves bad bitch pokemon. She’d smile while Tentacruel takes care of her enemy’s team effortlessly because I just know she’d have trained hard for her team to be unstoppable
