hi everyone !! tatts & cupcakes is back :)) idk if anyone still remembers it at this point or even wants to continue reading the series 😭 but thank you for all the interactions while i was ia on this blog 🥺 <3

i haven’t updated in a while so if i missed anyone on the taglist pls lmk also tumblr was being a dum dum and i couldn’t tag a few ppl so if you’re one of them i’m sorry 😪

You felt your palms sweating as you opened the door to reveal K, Heeseung, and Jake. While you weren’t worried about Ni-ki going out with Heeseung and Jake, you were nervous about him going out with K. Ni-ki didn’t know K was his father which was something you and K decided not to reveal until Ni-ki got more comfortable with K which was why they were going to the nearby plaza to shop with Heeseung, Jake, and Jungwon. Sunghoon would stop by the bakery later today to pick up the lunch you had offered to make and pack for them all.

“You good?” Heeseung asked, squeezing your shoulder as an act of reassurance. You nodded and took a deep breath, watching cautiously as Jungwon and Ni-ki went up to K and Jake.

“Just nervous, I guess.”

“I’ll make sure nothing goes wrong, don’t worry,” Heeseung said causing you to smile at him. Jay and Sunoo were going to spend the day together at home, something that you suggested in hopes of easing Jay’s stress. If Jay saw for himself how well Sunoo had gotten, he’d feel better about letting him go back to school tomorrow. After they left you saw Sunoo sulking on the couch, arms crossed and lips formed in a pout. Sitting next to him,

“What’s wrong bubs?”

“I wanted to go with them!” You sighed, petting his hair,

“I know, I know. But at least you’ll go to school tomorrow, right? You’ll get to see all your friends again!” you said in what hopefully sounded like a cheery tone. Yet still, Sunoo didn’t seem satisfied.

“How about I make you tteokboki for lunch tomorrow, will that help cheer you up?” At those words, Sunoo’s eyes up lit up and you knew that there was your sunshine. As much as Sunoo didn’t want you do, you had to leave to open up the bakery.

“I can drop you off,” Jay offered as you were putting your things in your bag.

“It’s ok, really Jay, thank you. Have fun at home with Sunoo, ok?” While you had left in a frenzy, there was now an extra thought added to Jay’s mind. “At home,” you called it. Yours and Ni-ki’s he wanted it to be.

You enjoyed your morning at the bakery, chatting with regulars, and giving out freebies to the cute little kids that stopped by with their parents. When Sunghoon stopped by, you set a picnic basket on the counter, about to explain the food inside when you suddenly received a call from the landlady of your and Ni-ki’s apartment.

“Hello?” you answered.

“Hi, you live in Apartment 22, right?” you heard from the other side of the line.

“Yes, I do.”

“Everyone needs to evacuate and pack up their things by tonight, there’s a rat infestation and the exterminators say that it’ll take 2 weeks until anyone can return to the building.”

“A rat infestation?” Why the hell was there a rat infestation and why was she telling you now?

“I’m sorry, hon. Everyone needs to pack what they can by 3 pm.” Checking the time, on your phone, it was only 11:21.

“Thanks for letting me know, I’ll leave right now,” was all you could say before ending the call. Sunghoon looked at you with a worried expression on his face,

“Rat infestation?” he asked. You nodded,

“Me and Ni-ki’s apartment, apparently it’ll take two weeks.”

“The two of you are staying at Jay’s place, though.”

“Yeah, but Ni-ki and I were gonna move out the day after tomorrow.”

“Just stay for two more weeks.”

“Hoon, I can’t do that. It’s not fair.”

“To Jay? I don’t think he’d mind if you two-”

“Not to Jay,” you muttered.

“Jungwon and Sunoo? But they like having their Ni-ki dongsaeng around.”

“To me! Sunghoon, it’s not fair to me!” you admitted.

“I- wait what?”

“I just, it’s not,” you took a deep breath, “Jay is good to me and Ni-ki, I know he is. But there’s just so much happening with Sunoo recovering and K returning. I can’t keep living with Jay, Jungwon, and Sunoo acting as if this whole situation is normal.”

“Do you want it to be?”

“What?”

“Living with Jay, being with his kids, do you want it to be normal?” You almost scoffed at the question,

“Of course I do, who wouldn’t?”

“Then make it normal.”

“Hoon, it’s not that easy. Getting into a relationship with three kids involved is messy and stupid and not the kind of heartbreak I’m willing to put anyone through.”

“Who says it’ll end in heartbreak.”

“That’s the only way I see this ending.”

“Open your eyes then.”

You quickly closed the bakery then rushed to your apartment and somehow, Jay and Sunoo were already there. Sunghoon probably told them.

“Hey,” Jay said as you walked up to them.

“You didn’t have to show up.”

“Of course I did, you and Ni-ki are staying for longer and I should help you move your stuff.”

“Jay, I don’t wanna be a bother. Ni-ki and I can spend the two weeks in a hotel, it’s fine.” Your tone was colder than anything that Jay had ever felt before.

“Are you uncomfortable? Living with me, I mean. Because if you are, I’m sorry.”

You wanted to tell him. Wanted to tell you that he made you weak with his soft gazes and sudden smile. Wanted to tell him that he made you regret how you had gotten so accustomed to his warmth that you probably wouldn’t be able to sleep without it. Wanted to tell him how he gave you hope, maybe love was in the cards for you one day. Wanted to tell him how he made you dream of the picture-perfect life you once thought was stupid. He made you weak, regret, hope, and dream in all the ways you didn’t know were possible but never were you uncomfortable.

“I just don’t wanna keep mooching off of you in your own house.”

“Really, I don’t mind if you and Ni-ki stay for longer. After all, what’s another two weeks?”

“You’re sure?”

“I am.”

“Pinky promise,” you said, bringing up your hand. He smiled as he interlocked your pinkies together and let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding in.

You packed as many as your and Ni-ki’s clothes that you could, in the process bringing a couple of your blankets and little trinkets that you felt comfortable with. While you were in the car with Jay and Sunoo, the trunk filled to the brim with your and Ni-ki’s things.

“Are you really sure it’s ok that I brought so much stuff?”

“Don’t worry.”

“What if there’s not enough space? Your closet’s already full and Ni-ki’s toys might get everywhere.” Jay’s hand moved away from the gearshift and gravitated towards your hand, his thumb rubbing soothing circles,

“We’ll make space.”

The rest of the day went by easily, the guys decided to stay for dinner, and being with K for a longer period of time went by better than you expected. Before you and Jay fell asleep the two of you made a plan for tomorrow since it was Sunoo’s first day back at school. Sometime throughout the night, you woke up to go to the bathroom. After getting out of the bathroom and heading back to the bed,

“No,” you heard with what almost sounded like a whimper, causing you to turn on the lights to see Jay in bed with his eyes closed.

“Jay?”

“I-it’ll, it’ll be ok,” you heard him mutter, seeing him twitch slightly. Tears escaped his eyes as he muttered incoherent words. He was having a nightmare.

“Jay!” you exclaimed, shaking him slightly in hopes that it’d be enough for him to wake up but he stayed within the depths of his nightmare. Not knowing what else to do, you lightly slapped his cheeks, and somehow, that had work. The upper half of his body rose up, eyes frantic as they looked around the room, and only seemed to calm down when they settled on you. You feel him hug you, an action you returned by running your hand through his hair and rubbing his back as he panted heavily trying to return his breathing back to normal.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” you asked cautiously.

“We were in the hospital again. But this time,” he let out a shaky breath, his hold on you tightening, “Sunoo didn’t, he didn’t, love, I, I can’t-” Jay couldn’t bring himself say it out loud but you didn’t need to hear the words to know what he dreamt. Sunoo didn’t make it out alive.

“It’s ok, just keep breathing with me, yeah? Your boys are safe and sound in their room and Sunoo’s going back to school tomorrow, well, technically later. We made a plan, remember?” He nodded, seeming to calm down slightly.

“What was the plan? Repeat it to me.”

“We were gonna wake up early and make breakfast for the boys and pack all their favorite things for lunch. Tteokboki, curry buns, and bungeoppang. We’ll drop them off at school, I’ll drop you off at the bakery then head to work. I’ll pick them up, we’ll go to the bakery to pick you up, then go home.”

“And that’s exactly what we’re gonna do, ok?”

“Ok.” You and Jay ended up laying down afterward but he seemed like he was too shaken up to be able to sleep and honestly, so were you.

“Let’s bake cupcakes.”

“Right now?” You nodded, the hint of a smile playing on the corners of your lips,

“Right now.” Baking cupcakes with Jay at a time in the morning when you should’ve been asleep gave you a sense of comfort you didn’t realize you needed and he seemed to feel the same way. In order to not wake up the boys, you needed to stay quiet, talking in low tones and hushed whispers but neither of you seemed to mind. As the cupcakes were cooling and you were stirring the frosting, a shiver ran down your spine. Something that Jay had taken note of. You felt his presence behind you, confirmed as his chest pressed against your back, arms wrapping around you as his hands rubbed up and down your arms.

“Should I turn up the heat, love?” you heard him ask. Love, he called you, love. It was nothing new to hear Jay call you that but in this moment, you came to a realization. In love was what the past few weeks felt like. Yet despite this, a thought lingered in the back of your mind. What happened when the warmth faded? What happened after two weeks and you and Ni-ki had to move back to your apartment? What happened when the cocoon of warmth you spent so allowing yourself to get enwrapped turned to ice? What happened when you had to return back to reality? You were brought out of your thoughts at the sound of Jay calling your name, asking for confirmation to turn up the heat. But instead,

“If you did then there’d be no reason to stay like this,” you replied teasingly with a smile on your face. The charm of the necklace he gave you shimmered under the kitchen lights as it rested around your neck. Jay wanted nothing more than to tilt your chin upwards and kiss you right then and there. Wanted to show you how much you meant to him. Wanted to love you in all the ways that words could never do it justice. He was so caught up in his thoughts, mesmerized by your smile, and entranced by this whole situation that he hadn’t realized what had just happened when something cool was felt at the tip of his nose, then, on his cheek and he heard a laugh from you.

“Did you just- don’t tell me there’s frosting on my face right now.”

You weren’t quite sure what possessed you to perform your following actions in the next moments. Maybe it was lack of sleep. Maybe it was how close Jay was to you that you couldn’t help but want to be closer to him. Maybe it was the way your mind grew hazy with only one thought and one alone on your mind.

You couldn’t help it when you let go of the spatula.

Couldn’t stop yourself when you got on your tiptoes.

Couldn’t hold back from wrapping your arms around his neck and your fingers playing with the edges of his hair.

“There’s no frosting on your face.” Eyes looking in his for any signs of hesitancy, all you saw was something you could almost label as love. But you didn’t dare.

“No? Then what’s on my face?”

“Well on your lips,” closing the distance between your lips and his so that it was mere centimeters, “are mine,” you whispered before your eyes fluttered shut and the distance closed.

Mia, episode ten

1. I like this little pile of girls she has going on here (and I love that it was recreated in s4). I really do enjoy this group together and it’s nice when we get to see them all in one group like this. ‘If he found out through someone else, that’d be worse’ - yeah it would, and I’m glad someone is finally working out that talking to each other is the best way to deal with things. The most frustrating thing about this season so far (apart from the Noora bits) is how so much could have been avoided if people just actually spoke to each other rather than making assumptions. I don’t feel like this was as big a problem in the other seasons. Hanna was built around how unhealthy this behaviour is and Matteo was actually relatively good at communication, at least in ways that didn’t end up with this sort of issue.

2. Druck: here are some shots of this school. Me: 💜💙💜 - every damn time. I really really love this school and its environs. It’s such a great place to create interesting shots and scenes in!

3. Okay, this bit seems better than the og. I absolutely loathed that William refused to listen to Noora at all and chose instead to believe someone who is absolutely 100% proven by him to be an asshole and manipulative. Here at least a) Mia genuinely did go and do something with Bjorn kind of on purpose and b) Alex is at least willing to talk; he hasn’t entirely shut her down. Alex has far more genuine reason to be upset in this case (she chose to hang out with Bjorn rather than go see Alex after all unlike Noora who was at William’s house and sort of pressured into doing stuff against her will while she waited for him). So the fact that Alex, while clearly hurt, is still willing to listen is a good change.

4. Hmm, this is a very interesting shot of Mia. Her costume is so dark and the background is so dark that her face stands out so starkly against it. It’s another sort of black and white thing, except that where Mia and Amira were both black and white (signaling that both had aspects of each), here Alex is white and Mia is black (meaning they’re framing him as ‘right’ here). I don’t necessarily love the way this season (and the og) tried to frame the William character as a misunderstood lovely guy when they both acted like absolute dicks. But I do like the way Druck uses costuming and cinematography.

5. I don’t think any of this backstory really absolves Alex of any of what he did or how he’s acted. But I will say, the acting is very nice and the things he’s talking about are quite poignant. Clearly, Bjorn shows all the signs of a classic abuser and this must have been a hard thing for a young guy to watch. But I guess the issue is that in order to stick to the og, Alex had to act like a similar sort of guy. Which doesn’t make sense. If he was as badly affected by all of this stuff as it seems he was, why start acting like the same sort of guy as the one who did this?

6. Interesting that by the end of the clip we’re back to a share of the black and white. Mia is absolutely in the right here, so this ‘nuance’ bothers me (there really is no reason for Alex to beat up Bjorn, and Mia’s right - she should be the one to deal with this in this instance). But I do like that again, Druck is using colours and light (there’s a lot more light on Mia and a lot more dark around Alex by the end of the clip) to make their point. It’s not absolutely one I agree with but I appreciate what they do with this stuff. It was great in Hanna’s season and it’s great again here. ‘Honestly Mia, this thing hasn’t worked between us from the start’ - hmmm, for once I agree with you, Alex. This is/was a high school romance that lasted for a couple of weeks. They’ll both get over it and move on, particularly if they’re going to be in different places. One thing I do like about the s4 stuff is that the show does acknowledge that and allows them to split up. That’s just life. That doesn’t mean they weren’t important for each other, but just that it was something that was with them for a short time, and it doesn’t have to be more than that. I know that isn’t how this season ends, but overall I like where it goes.

7. Oh, the often-talked-about ‘beanie boy’ scene. Sad that I have never seen this episode and yet I recognized it from what Jonas is wearing. Yes, I’ll admit it: I am a David fanatic and I’m so glad he had this little moment in this season. Also, Hanna my dearest love looks so lovely here. I’m not surprised Jonas hasn’t got himself over her yet. I mean, look at her!!! I do like how awkward this is. Hanna did the moving on, she grew up and made a decision and it’s great that it worked for her, but I have been in the place where the other person wants to be friends but it hurts too much so I get Jonas as well. This is a hard situation and I have to heap praise on the acting once again. They’re both doing such a a great job here of selling just how tough this is.

8. I have very few thoughts about the whole ‘sitting around smoking’ thing except that those glasses really suit Abdi! But big sigh... here we go having Amira being the ‘reasonable’ one and telling us what to think about Alex. Like Sana. she’s supposed to be the moral centre of the group and so we’re supposed to listen to her, and she’s telling us that we should understand him because of what he went through. But there’s no nuance here again - yes, he went through something really awful and yes he has some qualities that aren’t entirely awful. But he still did some manipulative and often plain horrible things and he shouldn’t get a pass for those just because he has a sad backstory. If he actually did something to make up for what he did, if he acted like he was sorry rather than ‘right’ (again, a hangup from the og so I get it, but I still don’t like it), then I might have some sympathy for this line of reasoning but as it is ‘he has a sad backstory’ isn’t the ‘gotcha’ these shows think it is. And ‘Jonas is actually worse than Alex’ is SUCH a terrible take. Is Jonas perfect? No of course not, but at least he didn’t deliberately do a lot of the awful things to girls that Alex did. He at least genuinely liked both Leonie and Hanna when he was with them, and didn’t string them along for cheap sex. Why do they always use the Sana character in this way? Kiki of all people has the right take here. It’s not up to outsiders whether they should or shouldn’t be together, but rather the two of them. All we can do in the end is support our friends.

9. Interesting placement with the message now being ‘follow your heart’ - again, I personally don’t think we should be making such a big romantic deal of this whole thing but if we listen to Kiki (rather than Amira’s ‘all men are assholes’ thing) then I guess we should applaud her. This whole thing has clearly been difficult for Mia and it’s good that she wants to fight for what she wants. Again I’ll slip in some praise for the acting - Druck (as with the og of course) really did seem to find some talented performers and then coaxed some lovely performances out of them.

10. Wow, Matteo even looks thoroughly uninterested in Sara even at this point. How did she not pick up on it? I do feel for Sam, though. She wants a boyfriend and what she gets is an Abdi which was just a hook up thing really. I wish we’d got to see her find someone good for her in all ways (and I’ll also never be over that we never did get resolution on some of Matteo’s and Amira’s stuff either... oh for even a short one-off like the abiball where we got some sort of closure).

11. In really shallow news, I love this place where Mia ia talking to Alex - it’s really cool and with the lighting and graffiti it looks really interesting. However, I know I talk a lot about pacing, but her again is an example of the issues I have with it. I know they had to condense 11 episodes from the og (some veeeeeery long) into 10 more evenly sized ones. But, this reunion in the last few minutes of the episode seems really rushed (though I am grateful that it’s not like the overly dramatic car reversing after William was yet again an asshole to Noora that we got in the og). Alex is still talking about how Mia doesn’t trust him, how much they fight etc etc and Mia is calling him out for all the awful things he di at the start (which he continues to deny!!!!!!). And it’s all true, and they don’t have time to actually talk about it before we get whatever fairytale they’re going for here. It’s too short. They could or should have rearranged a few clips (particularly earlier in the season) so we could get a better and stronger resolution of the problems they’re raising here. ‘Yeah we’ll still do and be all those things’ isn’t the romantic ideal they’re suggesting. They still don’t communicate properly, which I personally would have liked to see before this big reunion.

However, overall I much preferred this ending to the one in the og. William was a much worse character in the last episode than Alex is here. I don’t like him, I don’t think he’s a good match for Mia but I do appreciate that he didn’t do what William did in the final episode. And Mia was more at fault than Noora was and so there’s more balance between them. I’ll never like this type of relationship, and I’ll certainly never like the Alex type of guy, but at least there was some acknowledgement of the issues and some suggestion that they can work on them together.

so one day he just randomly asked you out

so after a little while you started dating

he loves it all and always lets you know how much he appreciates them and you

he also loves your drawings and how you put your heart in every single line of it

you once drew him and he almost cried a bit

which he did, but whining like a child when their parents don't give them a new toy

so you accepted his forced apologies

and after some kinda weird moments of you talking

Long and Obligatory ‘I’m Not Dead’ Post 12/20/19

As the title says, here’s your obligatory ‘I’m not dead’ post because reasons.

I’m still working on Inventor’s Absolution when I have time, but it’s definitely harder to now that I 1.) have a new, full time adult job and don’t just work like 25-hours a week anymore, 2.) the holidays are coming up, and 3.) writer’s block and writer’s self-deprecation alternates on which kidney they’re gonna punch me in LOL

It’s been so long since I last posted a chapter I feel insanely guilty for it. It wouldn’t be so bad if I made side content during this big pause for y’all to enjoy, but I didn’t know what to write and I had lost the want or need to for a long time. If I tried to write for IA, I either struggled with putting my thoughts on paper, or I would guilt-trip myself out of even trying to write more because my brain would go ‘you’re doing this instead of the (x) amount of things you’re supposed to be doing right now??? p a t h e t i c” so I suffer even more haha especially since I’m sure a lot of readers aren’t around anymore with this long hiatus so I feel even worse :,) sorry everyone!

I still can’t promise any kind of update outside of being nicer to myself, or promise that I’ll be posting anything soon--I mainly wanted to put my thoughts and struggles out there. I do have multiple chapters of IA written, but because they’re not in order I can’t actually post them *sweats* which is another problem in itself! And as well, to give myself a break but keep with writing, I’ve been working on my original novels, poetry, and otherwise writing little fanfics drabbles here and there of other media I enjoy, like Nancy Drew games! Especially now that Midnight in Salem is out after 50000000 years and I finally got my physical copy!

So yeah that’s it. While I keep working, is there any IA content you guys might want to see to fill the void while I keep working and keep me on my flow? drabbles here and there or scenes you’d like to see between characters? anything at all to make things more fun/interesting?

TL;DR: I’m busy and depressed and writing when I can. no update yet, but tell me if there’s any IA content you’d like to see me write, talk about, or post on here for you guys!

end-of-the-year update (it’s a big one)

hi friends

to begin if you’re on mobile i’m sorry because this is probably gonna be super long but i’ve decided to give an update as to what’s been hip hop happenin’ in my life for like the whole year i guess

as i’m sure many of you were aware i spent the first two and a half months (until mid-march) doing literally nothing before i studied abroad in japan (!!!!!!!) from march 15th to august 2nd and had a super great time. it was absolutely amazing, and i miss it so much and wish i could go back ugh. if you ever have the chance to go to tokyo, i 1000000% recommend it because it was absolutely wonderful and there’s so much to do and see

after i got back i was home for like 20 days before starting my senior year in college. i spent like half of that time super jetlagged and hella sick (i was in 4 different airports on my way back, travelling for over 24 hours so it’s pretty much understandable tbh). but i went to school early for a volunteer thing that i did the past two years and got to see my friends!! which was nice!! and then i started classes which was okay. i was taking 5 classes (my international affairs capstone (rip), two sociology classes (soc of mental health and soc theory), astronomy and macroecon) and some i liked more than others. my soc of mental health class was a grad-level class that i have to take for my honors in major, and me and this other guy were the only two undergrad students with 5 grad students (some of whom were like ‘ah yeah this is my last class before i get my phd’ and i felt super incompetent the whole time and like i knew nothing), one of whom was my ta for my other soc class which was super strange. it wasn’t bad, and the professor was not as harsh of a grader as i expected her to be tbh. my astronomy class was awful (bc it was a gen-ed and my friend that i was taking it with and i were like two of the five seniors in the class with the rest basically freshmen and sophomores) and i honestly learned like very little from it, but i liked econ more than i expected i would.

i also went back full-swing into my clubs which was one of the main things i missed when i was abroad. i joined the japanese culture club that was created at the end of the semester, and did a presentation on my time in japan for our last meeting which was fun. i also went into the japanese classes and presented to all of them. i did some presentations for scholarships that i got as well. which also kind of leads me to my other point of becoming a global ambassador for study abroad!! which honestly sounds a lot cooler than it actually is but hey it’s another thing to put on the resume am i right

along with that, i was cross-trained to work at circulation at the library, so now the majority of the time i’m upstairs at the front desk which isn’t as bad as i thought it would be. it’s definitely more fun than being down in multimedia all the time, and i feel my customer service skills have gotten better. i tutored two people this past semester in psych stats, which was okay (as i didn’t take that class but oh well close enough), but towards the end of the semester i was like ugh can i be done with this. but i was hired as a tutor support assistant which i’ll be doing a lot of work for in the spring (which means i’ll be making more money bless). i’m also set to work curtailed operations at the library when the school is closed for snowdays (which is $15/hour bless) and i applied to be a part-time staff member there as well. i’m only going to be taking 3 classes in the spring so i’m hoping to spend a lot of my time working which is why i applied for all these things

and as for my classes, i’m going to be doing another grad class (social demography), another soc class (class, status, and power) and course about business in asia that’s taught by my japanese professor (the only reason why i took it tbh). my roommate and i were trying to create an independent study for japanese in the spring but we weren’t able to get it to go through because the chair of the department is literally the worst at responding and doing things in a timely manner, and the dean’s office also isn’t helping at all :))))) i’m planning on going to the dean’s office at the start of the semester and complaining a bunch. for ia, i needed to get through the 632-level for japanese to complete the major but because the program is so small they don’t have that class, and i was told before i studied abroad that i could do an independent study when i got back to count but they wouldn’t let me make one so i’m like lowkey screwed? maybe? but the ia department emailed me asking if i took a class for credit in japan and i emailed my sensei and was like ‘hey they won’t let me do an independent study can you say that you approved one of my classes in japan thanks’ and we shall see what she says so i might be okay. so for the spring i’ll have classes monday 9:10-12, 3:40-5, tuesday/thursday 9:40-11 and wednesday 3:40-5 which ain’t too shabby i’ll say. so i’m planning on doing 10-hours normally at the library, with potentially part-time staff, and hopefully 10 hours a week for tutoring support stuff and other tutoring if i have students that need it.

i have no idea what i’ll be doing after graduation but we shall see what’ll happen when the time gets to it. i’ll probably work at the summer program i worked at last summer (or take my sister’s job at the one she worked at ayy), and then we’ll see from there. i thought about applying for grad school for the spring of 2019, but if i’m being honest i’m pretty much tired from school. doing school for 16 years straight has left me super worn out, especially with all i’ve been trying to do in college with two majors and a minor and two+ jobs and five clubs. i might like halfheartedly apply to some places but like this semester was too busy with all of my stuff to even think of the GREs or applications. we’ll see what the future holds though.

okay i’m gonna end this here but that’s pretty much what’s been happening to me academically at least. i’ve made a lot of new friends this year which i’m super grateful for, as well as gotten close with other ones. i’d say that i’ll be on here more but we’ll see what next semester holds. if anyone’s read through all of this (which i highly expect no one to have done) congratulations, you have made it.

Currently…

Hello, and happy post 4th of July! I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

It was SCORCHING hot here but we still managed to have a great time waving at floats and collecting candy at our neighborhood parade (lots of water trickles on heads plus suckers seemed to do the trick) then attending a friend’s BBQ later that night. There was some miscommunication earlier this week when I thought we were hosting dinner, so it was a nice surprise to be able to walk out the door and hang out at someone else’s home for the night!

These are the same friends whose 2011 4th of July party I made 66 Jello shots for. My, times have changed. ;)

I spent yesterday recovering from the heat – 9 months pregnant + 100+ heat index = taking several days to fully cool down – and continuing to prep for baby girl. Just a couple weeks left, you guys – insanity!!

These past two weeks I’ve felt like doing nothing yet everything at the same time. Although my energy levels are way down and the amount of appointments, meetings, and last minute projects I’m trying to fit in are taking up a huge amount of time, the urge to nest is a very real thing. That said, I’ve been trying to tackle one major thing each night. While Ben is in charge of putting together furniture/painting baby’s bedroom, I’m tackling the washing/prepping of bottles, laundering gobs of newborn clothes (thank goodness for one of my besties who had twin girls with very good taste last year. So funny to see pink in the dryer lint trap!) cleaning bouncers and swings, etc. I think we’ll be totally ready for her when the time comes – if only by the skin of our teeth.

All this hard work means I can spend the next two weeks focusing on these two sweet, sweet souls.

Anyway, wanted to catch up on all things new food products / musicals / Netflix specials in today’s edition of Currently! I hope you have a WONDERFUL summer weekend – catch you on the other side!

Drizzling: Here Michigan Apple Balsamic Salad Dressing. Since my GD diagnosis I’ve been eating at least one giant salad a day, and my favorite Tessemae’s Creamy Ranch dressing started to get a little heavy. That said, I picked up this bottle of dressing at the store a few weeks ago and it is SOOOO good! Tart, tangy, full of flavor, and I love the ingredient list too. Look for this in the refrigerated salad dressing section vs the aisle.

Attending: Hamilton. Ben and I saw Hamilton last week (it’s in town until mid-July) – we’d been DYING to see what all the fuss was about! Ben’s a mega hip hop enthusiast who also loves musical theater so he was actually bopping in his chair for 3 hours straight. I’m not a public bopper but was tapping my foot the whole time. Needless to say, we loved it and I can’t recall another show we’ve seen where every single song was one to remember. I’m so proud of my city for being able to host the touring crew. If you get the chance – do NOT skip Hamilton!

Watching: Ali Wong. I recently watched Ali Wong’s Baby Cobra special on Netflix at the recommendation of a friend and literally can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. Like, years. Maybe my whole life? Ben thought I was off my rocker but once I started I couldn’t stop! Do not watch if you’re easily offended about, well, anything, but if you dare, I promise you a HIGH-larious show.

Playing. The little boys and I have been heading to the backyard for a dip in the blow up pool a couple afternoons each week and like to finish up with a good 10 minute hose blasting session (my water bill hates me.) I truly don’t know who has more fun – them or me, muwahaha. :)

Devouring: peaches. IT’S OFFICIALLY PEACH SEASON, PEOPLE! Sorry to shout, but the beeline I made to the peach portion of the produce section at the grocery store earlier this week after smelling them from afar was rather impressive, if I do say so myself. Since peaches are pretty high in carbs I’ve been slowly savoring one every afternoon this week. It’s the best part of my day. (Recipe for Peach Caprese Salad is on deck for this weekend. ↓)

Visiting: Iowa Distilling Company. I recently visited the Iowa Distilling Company for a fun project (will fill you in on the details later,) and I cannot WAIT to return when I can actually sample some of the products! Great people distilling uniquely Iowa spirits with a killer drink menu, and the neatest “tap room” vibe (think 1875 general store meets approachable hipster hangout.) If you’re ever in Cumming, IA be sure to stop by and try a few tasty beverages with Kyle (the owner) + his crew. The Lemon Honey Zone is calling my name…

Inhaling: Barnana Plantain Chips. I know I just recently mentioned these Barnana Plantain Chips but they’re worth another shout out – I.am.obsessed! They don’t taste sweet nor like bananas, which is a good thing in my opinion, plus they’re thick, crunchy, and full of flavor. They feel like healthy potato chips (shrugs shoulders.) I find them in my grocery store’s health market for about the same price as Amazon. Highly recommend the Brazilian BBQ flavor.

Craving: Fresh Mint Iced Tea. I know what I’m doing with the fresh mint that’s currently taking over my entire herb garden! How refreshing does this ice cold tea from Love and Olive Oil look? They’d make the best preggo popsicles…

Quitting: The Bachelorette. Mama didn’t raise no quitter except that I’m officially closing the door on this season of The Bachelorette. Snoozeville, horrible guys with even worse real world behavior and, I don’t know, Bachelorette – I just not that into you. Bring on Paradise! Fellow fans: am I alone?

Loving: Coconut oil face wash. Not a coconut oil-based face wash, rather, using coconut oil AS my face wash! I saw this method on a fellow blogger’s Instagram account a few weeks ago and have been loving the process and results ever since. At night I massage a dollop of coconut oil all over my face (I use unrefined organic from the grocery store – use refined for less of coconut smell) then place a steaming hot washcloth on top and let it sit until the cloth is cool before wiping everything away. Takes off ALL my makeup, including waterproof mascara and eyeliner, plus my skin feels so, so soft. I never have breakouts when I’m pregnant (thanks, hormones (for once not being sarcastic about hormones!)) so I’m anxious to see if this is still a good skin solution after baby is born. For now I’m loving the simplicity of washing away the day’s dirt and grime with simply coconut oil and a washcloth. It’s the little things.

Blending: Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothies. Since Lincoln is allergic to dairy and super super slim, I’m always looking for ways to fatten and fill him up. A few days ago I made him a Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie with this Silk Chocolate Protein Milk I’d recently found at the grocery store, which is high in both fat and protein (and yes, sugar, but seriously this high-fat and protein/no dairy thing is really tough) and he sucked it DOOWWWN. All I did was blend ~3/4 cup of the milk with 1/2 ripe banana and a big spoonful of peanut butter until smooth, then added ~1 cup ice and blended until thick and frosty. He and his brother each thoroughly enjoyed a glass – think we’ll make them into popsicles soon!

Aight Tumblr, I’ve resurrected.

I’m mainly gonna post here again because... I need motivation. I need to push myself even further. I know I can do better.

WARNING: In this post, I may give off an extremely self-centered, narcissistic vibe. Also, the latter half of the post is pretty depressing and personal. If you hate such people, just unfollow me. Because I’m going to post a lot of stuff like this on my IB blog. If you’re OK with it though, just click to read more.

Also, if you’re an IB Year 2 or alumni who’s gone through similar things, please contact me. I need your advice for my next year. Please.

Junior year did not end the way I would have liked it to. Let’s just say that I’ve been through a lot; crappy Chem grades, SciOly has had its own share of struggles, I’m on the academic dishonesty list because someone decided to manipulate a stupid mistake I did and to top it all off... the most popular (now graduate) IB senior hates me, as well as practically the entire junior (now senior) class. Which, to make it worse, is like, 7 people discluding me.

Y’know what? I’m gonna look back on the goals I posted and see how the chips fell.

I’m aiming to get 50 points for my IB Diploma. But K, it’s absolutely impossible to get 50 points on the IB Diploma! you may point out. And, well, you’re right. I’ve always lived by a motto that was first instilled in me when I learned a basic form in karate. In a form called Stone Stance, one of the stances was a guard stance where we’d yell, “Ayah! GIve 110% percent!” Keeping that for long-term, I decided to translate that literally into my IB score. 110% of 45 is 49.5, which I’ve rounded up to 50. So, yep! I want to get 50 points on my diploma. (If you haven’t figured it out already, I’m aiming for a perfect 45! Ssshhh!)

Well, there goes that. The IB Math (SL) exam went harder than I anticipated, and I’d be happy to get a 6. And I’m in Timezone 1!!! Timezone 2 had an even harder exam! Honestly, it makes me feel even more stupid. Also, our class IAs were AWFUL, according to my teacher. A lot of us did it the day before the due date so the quality was pretty shitty, myself included. I ended up with a 13/20. Which was the highest score in the class. If that’s not concerning... idk what is. Praying for moderation to raise our scores by at least 2 points... please.

In English, my IOP was... ok. I don’t think anyone understood it, but... I hope I passed. My Written Assignment/Assessment (idk and idc what the hell it’s called) went better, although I turned it in 20 minutes late. But hey she only deducted 10 points off my “completion” score, so I still got an A. And I don’t think it sucked. My EE has a LOT of work left to be completed, which I hope to finish in the five or so weeks I have left of summer break. (Fuck, it’s already July. And by the way, sorry I’m cussing.)

I want to break to Speech and Debate States. Last year (sophomore year) was my novice year in competitive speech and debate. I did very well on my first debate tournament and was immediately bumped to the varsity level. However… the same could not be said about speech (which I forced myself to be varsity in), and any tournaments thereafter. Eesh, especially the state qualifiers. Those were the absolute worst for me. I got 5s in nearly all my Oratory speeches and was in the very bottom bracket for LD debate. My goal this year is to actually break to a final round in a league tournament, because I know I can do it, and I was just a terrible speaker the year before. I want to break to States, even if it takes me to senior year. TBH, though, as an introvert with little true friends, a former terrible communicator, and someone almost diagnosed with autism, I feel like I’ve come a long way already in the sense of communication.

TL;DR: It didn’t happen. I had SciOly regionals on debate state quals, and I got bottom tier in speech quals. Pretty disheartening, since it looks as though I didn’t improve though I practiced my ass off those speeches. I’m writing my speeches for this year over the summer to hopefully get a headstart on my fellow competitors. I remember one day a really competitive teammate of mine wanted to break to States so bad. I said that you know what, it isn’t the end of the world if you didn’t. She retaliated at me by saying that she wanted to break and that I had no motivation. Look, she’s a nice sophomore and all, and we were pretty good acquaintances, but at that moment I wanted to punch her in the face and yell, “You wanna go, you wanna go??? No motivation my ass!!! How dare you say that to me!!!” (Aaaaaand that’s probably why I was Sorted into the house of Slytherin.)

I really wanna be captain next year, but it isn’t gonna happen. I had a bunch of ideas to implement for the team to make it better, and I really wanted to connect with everyone a bit more. And be respected by people. But those motives are probably not enough. At least, I don’t think so. There’s just too many (now) seniors that are more qualified than me - more years on the team, better records, more extroverted... let’s try to forget the last part. Either way, I still can manage hopefully more than one event. And I need to lead SciOly, and this year I’m going to make it an impact I leave on my school. >:) I have one more year to break to Speech and Debate states though, and I REALLY, REALLY want to do it. I believe in myself. I can do it; I have the passion.

I want to get admitted into Stanford (or at least a selective college/university). 😲, big dream, I know. To increase my chances, I want to get super involved in things I 😍 this year and do well in them, as well as get top scores on my SAT/ACT tests. I feel like the place I’ll lack is extracurriculars, since I haven’t done anything extraordinary yet (like being president of a big club or going to a state/national tournament). I believe I am capable of high test scores and good grades in IB. I hope I don’t get any more Bs though. So far, I have 3 Bs… which is kinda bad. My goal this year isn’t to do things for college or uni, but to show colleges and uni how passionate I am, and to make them fall for me. 🆗, romantic analogy, I know.

L. M. A. O. Let me just say: With Bs in sciences for both terms? Honey, it ain’t gonna happen. Let’s just say I’m applying with very fewer hopes of getting in. R.I.P to me.

Okay, with THAT out of the way, here comes the incident that shakes me to this day.

The Plagiarism Incident

It actually starts around October. There are eleven people in my IB Biology HL class. Obviously, I won’t mention names, but I will say that practically everyone except for the three(ish) people I knew would stick with me beginning to end hated me afterward. I’m talking, snapping back at me, turning heads away from me, acting superior to me hating me.

We were all doing this ventilation lab. Basically, we use a spirometer to calculate our breath rate and take our heart rate. I don’t remember exactly what I did, but I typed up a lab report to be submitted to the IB as one of our required labs. At that point, we were all still kinda neutral to one another, and no one hated another. I got messages from most of my classmates asking me how I organized my report. And here’s the stupid part: I shared it with them via Google Docs. Thankfully, this incident did not result in plagiarism. But a different one... did.

We were doing another lab in the spring requiring another write-up, the biofuel lab. Each group was doing a different lab, so it’s weird that the plagiarism happened here. There was this guy in my lab group. He was my lab partner in Honors Chem and was with me for most of my high school career, so I knew him well. He always asked me questions - the stupid kind - and would do anything, even cheat, for more points. He was just thirsty. It was at the time I was making my new lab report that I did an even stupider thing.

I made a copy of my ventilation lab GDoc, sharing it with everyone else. Liking to click all the boxes regardless of direction, I decided to fucking click that box, which shared it with everyone.

I was hella surprised (but shouldn’t have been, in hindsight) when I received 100% plagiarism for my lab report.

Hyperventilating, I quickly sent an email to my Bio teacher on what had happened. That set the trap I had set for myself in motion. My Bio teacher asked the IB coordinator, who asked the school admin, and pretty soon it was a schoolwide issue. The guy I mentioned earlier got punished because I accused him of turning in my report (mind you, he had been kicked out of a math class for cheating earlier in the year. Not a pretty sight to see, especially considering my math teacher chewed him out) and he spread the rumor that everyone was getting on the academic dishonesty list by looking at my report. He even talked about it in front of me to the rest of my History class (which was again 7 people, the DP candidates) and when I politely asked if they could stop talking, a girl rudely told me that they “were having a conversation.” (Well, I never got along well with her anyway in terms of personality.) As a result, I was practically isolated from the rest of the DP candidates for the rest of the year - except for one guy, who had been isolated from the group since day 1. He’s pretty chill. That was also around the time my depression set in, and I was in a craze with MBTI, personality disorders, and had a strong inferiority complex. Long story short, I met with the IB coordinator, who said that I would be on academic dishonesty for collusion. Which I acknowledged. But guess why I was 100% plagiarized?

You fucking guessed it. A completely UNRELATED person turned in my report. By ACCIDENT. If I hadn’t emailed my Bio teacher at 1 AM that night, none of this would’ve ever happened - at least, happened the way it did.

NOW (the girls) have formed a clique, intentionally discluding me. And I have to be with them another year. Too late to switch to APs, and colleges will wonder why the hell I dropped a commitment halfway through. I honestly want to drop out of IB right now, though. My experience has made my life so terrible, and it’s not even because of the actual curriculum. To make matters worse, I’m on the list. It’s no big deal, my coordinator said. Um, stop trying to lessen the pain of the wound. It is a big deal. I might as well be ineligible for any leadership positions next year. Captain, president, manager? Forget it.

That’s all for this post. My summer isn’t particularly splendid either. I think I’ve burnt myself out. If you’re from my school and reading this, take whatever I say the way you like. I can’t control you.

In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? By the way this company is one of the largest in the country.""

I came to north Carolina at the beginning of August from FL to stay with my aunt while I got my finances in order and she recovered from her back surgery. I plan to stay here until a bit after the new year. When I moved, I arranged to have my mail forwarded while i am here. Also around this time, I started searching for a new insurance provider because my rate had gone up with geico. I decided on progressive. When signing up for progressive, I signed up with my Florida drivers license number and my new nc mailing address. A couple of months later I received a letter from the state of Florida saying that they were notified my geico insurance policy was cancelled and to provide new proof of coverage. I went online and provided the information but apparently made an error when selecting the insurance company name. I accidentally selected protective insurance company instead of progressive. I was made aware of this error when I received a license suspension letter yesterday. Since then I have notified the state of Florida Of the error. I then received notice that my insurance was still not acceptable because Florida requires that if I have a florida registration, i must have a Florida policy. I called my insurance who confirmed that although they provide Florida coverage, I was under a nc policy even though I provided them with a Florida drivers license number since my mailing address was currently nc. I have had no lapse in coverage, but my insurance company cannot switch it back to florida until I am living there again at the beginning of the new year and can provide a valid address of where I will be living. I do not know where I will be living when I get back yet because I will have to find a new place to move into. Does anyone have any advice as to what to do in this situation? When I first moved to FL and transferred my tags, it cost me almost 500 dollars, so if i transfer them to NC for the time being, i will then have to pay 500 dollars again once I go back to FL""

So, my brother got into a car accident about 3 years ago. He was driving his car and a motorcyclist ran into him doing around 90 mph, causing the bike to flip and the guy on the bike to dismount and skid across the freeway. Today, we got a call out of the blue from Mercury saying my brother couldn't be on the insurance anymore because they had settled with the motorcyclist for $100,000 and basically, if we didn't get him off the insurance, my whole family would be removed. We didn't receive any notification that Mercury was planning on paying this guy out or that our rates would be altered. We called the attorney's office but he wasn't in and we explained the situation and the receptionist said they might of just settled anyway without letting us know even though this whole thing wasn't even my brother's fault. My question is, if the accident was the fault of the motorcyclist and when the motorcyclist initially sued and was denied a settlement (there was no mention of a settlement on the attorney's letter; it just said that it was dismissed), how and why would Mercury give this jacka$$ $100,000 and deny my brother coverage? I am a 26 year old woman who have been dating 27 year old man for 2-3 months now.And things were great, and well... not sure what the heck ia going on, might just be me overreacting (I am insecure, and it will take a little logner into a relationship before I get comfortable).Anyway. We met online, as he pointed out, the girl he is looking for is most likely going to be sitting at home. We are not the type to go out and such. We had a few great dates, 4-5 before tve first sleepover. The sex and everything have been great! We got into a rythem of seeing eachother monday/tuesday as well as saturday to sunday sleepover. And things were great, untill last week.Its now been two weeks since I saw him last. We had a date for last saturday bt he cancelled. He has just gotten a promotion at work, and had been super stressed with work and working overtime. So he cancelled due to a migrane. I was sad, but hey, life happens. That sunday was fathersday (in my country) so we did not get to see eachother then either.Monday and tuesday this last week he travlled with work, and worked overtime at work wedensday to friday. You have just been the victim of what is known in television as a “tease.” It is something, or anything, to keep the audience watching and away from the clicker. So while I still have your attention, let’s discuss my new career.

Since I wasn’t trained to do anything except throw a baseball, the field was wide open. Growing up, I was fascinated by my father’s work. The usual conversation at the dinner table was a discussion of the case he was working on. Dad would give facts and clues, and it was up to Tommie and yours truly to close the case. Being financially secure and having, as the players might say, “time drippin’ out of my butt,” I figured what the hell.

In the state of Florida, you don’t just proclaim yourself a Private Investigator, there is a course to take. But since this is Florida, you are only required to show up for twenty-four of the forty hours. Three weeks and a practice test later, I drove up to Orlando to take the exam. As I sat in the room with a group of nervous candidates, it occurred to me that the same people who ran the Inquisition had quizzed me in College – the Jesuits. No lousy State exam bothered me. I passed. So, now armed with a card that announced me as a licensed Private Investigator in the Sunshine State, I set to work.

I passed up the obligatory office on Main Street for a desk, a couch, two chairs, and some file cabinets. My den is now the World Wide Headquarters of Vic Landell Investigations.

In my first year on the job, the cases I worked on fell into two categories. Fifty percent were suspicious wives who hired me to follow their husbands to discover if they were getting a little sumthin’ sumthin’ on the side, and the other fifty percent were curious husbands who had hired me to find out if their wives were playing hide-the-salami with the pool boy. Many are the nights I spent parked outside a strange house, armed with my trusty Nikon. In time, I earned the nickname “Wrecking Ball” because of all the happy homes I’d broken up. OK, so I wasn’t on the hunt for the Maltese Falcon, but I was a Florida private eye. From jump, I made myself a promise that I would work hard and take the job seriously like my dad – no dilettantes here.

You have been very patient, so let’s talk about my date. This, by the way, is not a first date. It’s probably the 101st date. Tonight, I’m seeing my girlfriend. What’s the big deal? You haven’t seen my girlfriend. Welcome to my whirlwind romance.

It all started about six months ago. The National Muscular Dystrophy Telethon was held on Labor Day weekend, and I volunteered to help answer phones, tend bar, or whatever they needed. The chairperson had other plans in mind.

“Would I bring something for the auction?”

I obediently autographed two baseballs, put on my Hugo Boss tuxedo, and headed up the Trail to the Van Wezel Center. All the while wondering why anyone would bid on a ball signed by a relief pitcher that was no longer capable of providing relief?

When I arrived, Mrs. Farnsworth, a classic southern matron with what you might call an air of entitlement, welcomed me with open arms and made a fuss about my donations. Jeez, you would have thought I brought the Magna Carta. I did a little schmoozing, signed a few autographs, ate some shrimp, and then as I looked across the Center floor, I saw her. Oh Lord! Of course you could hardly miss her. She was six feet tall and had on a pair of five-inch stilettos. Poured into a black cocktail dress, not only did she tower over all the women, she towered over the men as well. I wonder if Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay got this feeling that first day? But that was only the beginning. Flawless skin, red hair, green eyes, and lips that screamed KISS ME. The body? Put it this way, she could put on a potato sack, walk into any strip club in South Florida, and be hired on the spot. I can’t tell you what the band was playing, but my brain was playing “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress,” in allegro vivace. If I did nothing else tonight, I was going to meet that girl. Walk over, look her right in the chin, and say hello.

In a woman, I look for intelligence, a sense of humor, and – well, I’ll cop to it – nice legs. As I walked toward her, she turned slightly, opening a strategically placed slit up the side of her gown to reveal the longest, most beautiful leg I had ever seen. So, you can check that box. As I got closer, I did what a lifetime of practice taught me – checked her left hand. No engagement ring and no wedding band. Further proof of what I’ve always believed.

“The men in this town are either gay or blind.”

She saw me approaching, and her smile turned to a scowl. Through clinched teeth she said,

“I don’t like you.”

Could someone please remove the ice pick from my heart? The scowl turned into a big, warm smile,

“Because I am a Cubs fan.”

I broke up laughing and so did she. Another box checked.

“Since I know who you are, let me introduce myself. My name is Marcia Glenn. I saw you play in Wrigley Field and sat there wondering how this guy with his assortment of junk pitches could get out my beloved Cubbies.”

I’d been ripped a new one in the nicest possible way by the hottest woman on the Gulf Coast. Fumbling for a line, the best I could do was,

“Sometimes I wondered the same thing. So, what brings you down here?”

She saw me sizing her up and down so decided to return the favor, head to toe in a glance.

“I’m working the room. Actually, I’m a news anchor at WWSB, and we’re the local station for the telethon. We all chip in, and I got stuck doing our hourly cut-ins.”

In my whole life I’d never felt less glib or clever. I decided it was safer to ask questions and let her do the talking – safer for me anyway.

“Are you going on soon?”

“Yes, my last spot is in five minutes.”

Thinking fast, I came back with the unbelievably insipid,

“Would you mind if I stood here and watched?”

That brought another smile,

“It’s fine with me, but the cameraman may not care for it, you’re in the shot.”

“Sorry.”

Sure hope she goes for the awkward, clumsy type. So I moved and watched her effortlessly seduce her audience. Besides being drop dead gorgeous, she was smooth and in total control. She did her bit and signed off. In those three minutes, I had formed my next question,

“Would you like to get out of here?”

Too soon? Keep in mind that to a ballplayer, “Would you like to get out of here?” usually translates as, “Would you like to go back to my hotel room and do the horizontal mambo?” With a disarmingly coy look, she replied,

“What did you have in mind?”

This was a woman who, no doubt, had heard every pick-up line east of the Mississippi. Now, hoping she wouldn’t laugh in my face\ I pressed on.

“Coffee for you, ginger ale for me.”

A moment that seemed like a lifetime passed and then,

“OK, Lefty, you sold me.”

We said our good-byes to Mrs. Farnsworth, and moments later, her 3 Series BMW convertible was following me down The Trail. I had just accomplished one of my goals in life – leave a big event with the best looking woman in the place, even if it was just for coffee. By the way, the next day I was informed my baseballs went for one hundred dollars apiece. The only possible explanation: Someone was desperate for a tax deduction. A right onto Bee Ridge Road and a couple of blocks later, we arrived at the only place still open on The Ridge, Denny’s. Our Sarasota is sometimes referred to as a sleepy little town, and not without reason. Yes, they roll up the sidewalks at 8pm. So, now having guided this long drink of water into a booth, it was time to do a little vetting of my own.

“Where are you from?”

“The burbs of Dallas, Los Colinas.”

I broke out laughing. She didn’t see the humor.

“What’s so funny?”

“I’m sorry, Marsha, it’s just that every year I watch the Miss America Pageant, and every year Miss Texas is a six-foot redhead with legs that start at her neck and end in El Paso.”

“While that is probably true, that’s not me, and it’s not Marsha, it’s Mar-c-ia. Besides I’m not six-feet tall, I’m five-twelve. You get credit for one thing, you didn’t fall back on that tired, old witticism, ‘they grow ‘em tall in Texas.’”

Christ, that was my next line. Rethink.

“So how did a Texas girl wind up in Wrigley Field?”

“Northwestern. Since I was seven, I wanted a career in broadcasting and opted for Evanston. That and college were a chance to see more than Texas. In the spring semester, I arranged all my classes in the morning and then jumped on the red line to catch the first pitch on Addison.”

“Wait a minute. I spent my career sitting in bullpens with six horny pitchers, tw0 horny catchers, and one horny ball boy. Most of the time we didn’t know what the score was, we were too busy scoping out the local talent in the crowd. These were guys who could spot a hottie ten blocks away. How did we miss you?”

“April and May were much too cold for a Texas girl. Didn’t you see me? I was the one with the parka on top of baggy sweats, a ski cap, and a ski mask covering my face.”

“I get it – no tank tops or shorts before June.”

Let’s see if I can pull a gratuitous complement out of her.

“When you saw me pitch, did you think ‘he’s kind of cute?’”

“I might have, but you have to remember, I was very busy hating your team…and you.”

Kiss my gratuitous complement good-bye. The server brought a second cup of coffee and another Canada Dry as we delved deeper into the life of Marcia Glenn, Cubs fan.

“After college, I was ready to start my career and sent tapes out to a number of TV stations in very small markets. I soon received responses from News Directors who were thrilled with the idea of a leggy redhead doing their weather. Well, I didn’t go to college to become someone’s weather bunny. And since no one wanted me to be a serious journalist, I did what all of my friends who couldn’t find a job did. I went back to school. In my case, it was Cornell Law School.”

Smart. Three boxes, a perfect score.

“Networks are hiring reporters and anchors with law degrees, thinking that a J.D. makes them credible. Watch Fox News, the women are gorgeous and all attorneys.”

Notes to self: 1. Tomorrow, go Home Depot and buy a stepladder and, 2. Send a nice note to Vera Wang or Hervé-Léger or whoever designed that dress.

“I tried again after law school and this time got an offer to be an anchor/reporter for a very prestigious station. Two weeks later, I was the newest, youngest member of the Newswatch3 team at KDIK.”

“I’m quite willing to be impressed, but I have never heard of KDIK. Where is it located?”

Her bluff called and her cover blown, sheepishly she admitted…

“Idaho Falls”

I almost spit up the ginger ale. I laughed, she laughed, the server laughed, and the couple in the next booth laughed. When order was restored, she continued.

“That’s how it works in Television. Start at the bottom and work your way up. So for me, the bottom was the 162nd market. Three years later, I was an expert on Bonneville County and ready to move on. My chance came when I got an offer from WWSB, Tampa – the number 13 market. What they didn’t tell me was that, while it reached the Tampa area, it was located in Sarasota. I said yes and here I am.”

Are you ever?

“So, the game plan says that the next jump will be to a major market and then to a network. There is, however, a problem with the game plan…”

I think I knew what was coming.

“Let me see if I can guess. You love Sarasota.”

“You hit it.”

“Well, this bodes well for me – a redheaded goddess who doesn’t want to leave town.”

“Now that I think about it, you were rather cute, or maybe I’m just a sucker for a man in uniform.”

“By the way, in case this goes south, do you have a sister?”

“Katelyn, and she is married, so you better not screw this up.”

We made a date for the next Saturday. She’d come over to my house, and we’d go to Phillippi Creek for lunch. A tall redhead from Texas had just put the fun back in fundraiser. On the way home, I kept saying to myself,

“This is no bimbo. I’m back in the big leagues, and if this is a dream, I will gladly kill the guy who tries to wake me up.”

Saturday came and promptly at noon, the BMW pulled into my driveway. She stepped out of the car wearing cut-offs, a tank top and most importantly, flats. I’m six-foot one, and she had just leveled the playing field.

“Welcome, but you should have brought a bathing suit.”

“Honey, this is the Sun Coast – there is one under my clothes, another one in the glove compartment, and an emergency back-up in the trunk.”

We walked through the front door and into what Floridians call the great room. Which translates as “no walls.”

“Well, I see you’ve done the whole place in early bachelor.”

“Yes, it does cry out for a woman’s touch.”

Would you like the job? Full time? She looked around and then noticed the sidewall.

“I always say that no Florida home is complete without a portrait of an aircraft carrier.”

“CVN-72, the USS Abraham Lincoln. My brother is a carrier pilot and that’s his ship.”

“So, how come a good looking, well-off guy like you hasn’t been roped, tagged, and branded?”

“Well, since you asked. You are a Baseball fan. Do you know the name George Brett?”

“Sure.”

“George had a brother named Ken, a really good guy known to one and all as ‘Kemer’, and his philosophy became my philosophy. A baseball player has a lot of opportunities, see also temptations, and it seems crazy to get married and then spend half the year being unfaithful, so, don’t get hitched until after you retire. If you are single, you can do anything you want. You can two-time, three-time or even four-time. Once you put the ring on, everything changes, no more straying, no foolin’ around. Kemer is gone now, but his philosophy is alive and well and living in me. Do I believe in marriage? Absolutely. My parents had a fabulous marriage. That’s my story. Now what about you? How is it that a mouth-watering redhead is not bedding down in some oil baron’s ranch house?”

“I’ve had my chances. I went with a guy through college, and it looked like we were headed toward the altar until one day he broke it off. He told me that he wanted more. And that ‘he couldn’t be what I wanted him to be.’ Whatever that means. Combined with the ever popular ‘it’s not you, it’s me.’ And, of course, like so many women, I immediately blamed myself, wondering what’s wrong with me. In time, it was replaced by a brisk screw him, and I threw myself into my career.”

“More? Are you kidding? You are beautiful, sexy, smart, funny, and have legs for days. What else is there?”

With a smile that could break your heart she replied,

“He didn’t say, he just left. You are a sweetheart, but enough with the bargain basement flattery, I’m hungry and you promised me lunch.”

Note to self: NEVER leave this girl waiting.

“So, padna, as we say in Texas, let’s mosey over to the chuck wagon. Do I get to drive the Lotus?”

“Not today. We’re using an alternative form of transportation.”

Those legs followed me into the backyard, past the pool, down to the dock, and into my 15-foot boat. No surprise, it’s a Boston Whaler.

“Where are we going?”

“As promised, Phillippi Creek, via the scenic route. I’ll drive and you lie gracefully across the front cushions.”

“Lie gracefully? Really? Is this lunch or just a clever ruse to get me into my bikini?”

What I lack in intelligence, I make up for in cunning.

“OK, Lefty, your boat, your rules.”

In a flash, the cut-offs and tank top were gone. I nearly fell out of the boat – from stem to stern. Seventy-two inches of goddess in a black bikini, and the legs were only the start. Some girls are fun; this girl is an amusement park. Believe me when I tell you, Disneyland is so not the happiest place on earth. I almost felt sorry for the guy who passed up the chance to marry her. Almost. Wherever you are today, thank you.

“Why do I think I’m not the first woman you’ve gotten into this boat. I’ll bet if I look hard enough, I’ll find a thong around here.”

“Too late, I cleaned out the thongs last week along with all the bras, the garter belts, and stilettos. Right now, I’m only thinking about the present woman in this boat, not the ones who have gone before.”

“Did they teach you that line of bull shit at Boston College…”

“…or did you learn it in the National League?”

There have been other women, but nothing like this. Something tells me I am going to have to bring my “A” game to this party.

“Never mind where I learned it. The operative question is, ‘is it working?’”

“I’ve heard worse. Heck, I’ve gone home with worse, which I guess bodes pretty well for you.”

I just smiled – of course by now even my hair was getting hard. By the way, on top of everything else, she does graceful very well. Don’t take my word for it, just ask the men on every boat we’re passing. All of us lost in a reverie.

“Hey, Lefty, someone is hungry up here. Will this thing go any faster? I’ve been on quicker cattle drives. No wonder they call this bucket a whale boat.”

End of reverie.

Thankfully, we are a minute away from the dock at the Phillippi Creek Village Restaurant & Oyster Bar. As usual on Saturday afternoon, the joint is jumping but we somehow manage to find an open slip and then flimflam our way into a table by the window. The Oysters in question are Apalachicolas. Found only on the Florida panhandle and prized by shellfish aficionados as some of the best in the world. The server arrives.

“And what can I get for the lady?”

“Two dozen oysters.”

Lunch is off and running. I wouldn’t eat those slimy buggers with a gun to my head, so I counter with a half-pound of shrimp and then another half-pound. She hoovers the oysters and then goes for the crab cakes and cold slaw. Here is a girl with either a Texas-size appetite, or the metabolism of a hummingbird.

“Is it too early in a second date to discuss a third date?”

With a voice that Mae West would have been proud of,

“What do you have in mind, big boy?”

Very good, too bad my Cary Grant is lousy.

“Ever had dinner at the White House?”

“Not since George and Laura moved out.”

When will I learn? She’s too quick for me.

“White House? Do you mean Maison Blanche?”

“Yes. The French place on Longboat Key, the number-one rated restaurant in town. Saturday night, I can make a reservation for eight and pick you up at 7:30.”

“Lucky for you, I’m dying to try it…you’re on.”

As we walk down the dock to leave, she reaches over and grabs the key out of my hand, jumps in and sits down behind the wheel of the whaleboat.

“Get in.”

“Can you drive this thing?”

“Let’s find out.”

I untie the line and step over the gunwale as she jams the throttle forward. Now with one foot on the deck and the other on the dock, the whaler takes off. I am lucky enough to fall into the boat rather than the water.

“Let’s see what this baby can do.”

“Great, I’ll just sit here and watch for the Coast Guard.”

In a flash, we are under the bridge and doing ‘S’ turns across Robert’s Bay, all of this way above the speed limit. I ordered the whaler with the upgraded engines in case someone wanted to do a little water skiing. Oh, was I regretting that decision.

“We, who are about to die, salute you.”

Her heavy hand on the throttle gets us down the Intracoastal, through Sarasota Bay, and into the canal in a heartbeat. Skillfully, she pulls the engines back to idle and floats the whaler right to the dock. I have been sandbagged.

After extending my hand and helping her out, I explain,

“I usually charge gorgeous redheads for driving my boat.”

“Really? What is the going rate?”

“This.”

I take her in my arms, pull her close, and plant one on those pouty lips. She gives just as good as she gets. This is a girl who has been kissed before. The spell is broken when she starts to laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

“I was thinking, what is the charge for driving the Lotus?”

I turn away and begin peering into the whaler.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking to see if you’ve left a thong.”

Saturday comes after a week of work, and now it is time for the all-important third date. Tonight, I make my move. I played with guys who knew how to dress, and they schooled me well. The navy-blue Armani suit has served me true in the romance department and now will be “called to the colors” yet again. We couple that with a Geoffrey Bean spread collar shirt and then over to the tie rack for something in red. Next stop, the shoe rack for a pair of Gucci dress loafers. Finally, a spritz of Fahrenheit, and I am good to go.

Marcia lives downtown in one of the new “townies” off Fruitville. I pull up in front, traverse the walkway, and ring the bell. The door opens, and there she is, six feet of redhead in a gunmetal mini-dress, and bless my soul, the stilettos are back.

“You clean up good.”

“What, this old thing? I just threw it on.”

“As we say in the National League, nice throw.”

This is followed by a moment I have been waiting for, to see if she can get all those legs and very little skirt into my overgrown go-cart without putting on a show. No show tonight. She manages to get her appendages in with no loss of modesty. Still in all, they really never end, they just go on forever. Any plan on running your hand the length of those legs requires a compass and a map. I have such a plan.

I drop the clutch on the Elise and we take off – from Fruitville to The Trail, over the Ringling Bridge, around St. Armand’s Circle and onto Longboat Key. Longboat equals high demand, still higher prices.

“Silly question, but did you bring your appetite?”

“How long you know me?”

We pull in at Maison Blanche, and a fight almost breaks out. All three parking attendants push and shove to open the passenger door and watch intently as 72 inches, plus 5, of woman get out of my tiny car. I, on the other hand, am less popular than a leper. More than slightly irked, I walk behind the Lotus, and then shove the key into someone’s hand.

“Get your own girl. Do you always cause this much of a ruckus?”

“I don’t mean to, it just sort of happens.”

“Were you the girl that didn’t get any dates because all the men thought you were unattainable?”

“Let me put it this way, I spent a lot of Saturday nights washing my hair.”

Part of my wooing technique is my sense of humor. Now, I have to compete with a woman who is funnier than I am.

“How would you feel about a bottle of champagne? Do we have reason to celebrate?”

“Baby, I’m out with you, that’s reason enough.”

“This may get me into trouble but I have to admit it – the cheaper the flattery, the more I like it.”

More good news, I can do cheap flattery all night long.

“I have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for news, and today the letter came from the Bar Association. This redhead passed the Bar Exam. I, Marcia Glenn, am now allowed to practice law in the State of Florida. Son of a gun, you see before you an Officer of the Court.”

The sommelier arrives. He doesn’t get a word out.

“Cordon Rouge, s’il vous plait.”

In my house, “Mumms” the word.

“I’m impressed.”

“Don’t be. That and “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir” are my total grasp of the French Language.”

That brings a big smile from the big redhead.

“Know what I really like about you?”

Here it comes; let’s all say it together.

“Your self-deprecating sense of humor.”

One for me, but she is still way ahead on points. Now, time to mix in a little business.

“OK, so now you are an attorney who from time to time will need the help of a private investigator, and I am a P.I. who from time to time will need a lawyer to get his chestnuts out of the fire. What do you say to a partnership?”

“You know, for a left-handed pitcher you’re pretty bright.”

She puts out her hand.

“Deal?”

Shaking her hand, vigorously,

“Deal!”

How am I going to break the news to Frank Ianella? Frank is my family’s attorney in Boston. How can I explain to him that a redhead has replaced him? I’m talking about a woman with curves in places that other women don’t even have places. Sorry about that, Frank, but I’ve got someone here who gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “In-house counsel.”

That said, dinner is a delight with escargots for the lady and onion soup for me, followed by Marcia’s blackened grouper and a sublime Coq au Vin for yours truly.

A note about Sarasota – you can get the local favorite fish at virtually every restaurant in the town. I keep waiting for McDonald’s to advertise “the McGrouper.”

We wrap up dinner with Bananas Foster and then head for the parking lot – time for Act Two of The Invisible Man. H. G. Wells, thanks for nothing. There is a cavalry charge of valets to retrieve the car and open the passenger door for the lady, all this in spite of the fact that I am the guy holding the tip in my hand. Every male within earshot then comes to attention when she says,

“I think it’s time for the top to come off.”

I don’t say a word, just a look.

“Not mine, the car’s.”

“Not my first choice, but I am here to serve.”

The little roll-up, canvas thing Lotus – with a perfectly straight face – calls a top is off and in the trunk in about ten seconds. So, let’s take stock – a raucous red convertible, a warm Florida evening, a moonlit beach road, Jimmy Buffett on the stereo, a gentle champagne buzz, and a leggy redhead. That just about covers it. Our tour of the Keys takes us the length of Longboat, around Bird, and finally to Midnight Pass Road, the main drag of Siesta Key. It is only then she recognizes where we are.

“Oh, you are good. My momma always told me watch out for those smooth Yankee boys.”

Feigning anger.

“First of all, I’m from Boston, don’t ever call me a Yankee.”

Now smiling.

“Besides, you’re a baseball fan. Don’t you know a crafty portsider when you see one?”

In case you are wondering, a “crafty portsider” is a left-hander who substitutes guile for velocity on his fastball.

“Well, if I had to guess, I’d say the next part of your devious little plan is to position me carefully on the couch, with soft lights and just a hint of music in the background.”

Not exactly the best kept secret since the A-bomb.

“What gave me away? The dinner? The flattery? How about the fact that I can’t take my eyes off you?”

By now, there was enough sexual tension in the room to light up South America.

“Let’s just say you’re not without charm, and – what do you know – we have arrived at the couch. The lights ARE low, and I believe I hear Kenny G wafting through the house.”

Now, we discover if this is a love seat or just a couch.

“OK, Lefty, let’s see what you got.”

The conversation portion of the evening is finished, having given way to long soft kisses. In time, the only other sounds are the metallic slide of a zipper and the gentle thud of a gunmetal mini-dress hitting the floor.
