i'm surprised i haven't seen any text posts yet about the Unsubtle Differences between astarion’s tiefling party/high approval forest scene and the one you get after the goblin party.

there’s something so terribly interesting about how the conversation afterward plays out depending on which variation you pursue.

like, most people have seen the tiefling party version by now. astarion basking in the sunlight the morning after, playing off most of what tav says with relative ease, even when they ask about his scars and he tells them about cazador. his cadence is smooth and composed, his smile almost friendly, even though you know, as the viewer, he’s playing a game of manipulation at this point. the only real crack in his demeanor is if tav notices that cazador’s “poem” was written in infernal, which, understandably, startles him.

but recently i watched the goblin party version of this same scene, and everything reads so differently. unlike at the tiefling party, it’s still the middle of the night when astarion tries to leave, thinking tav is asleep—almost immediately after the act, in fact. when tav does speak to him, he’s visibly nervous, halting and stammering in the middle of lines delivered unflinchingly in the other version of the scene. he gestures broadly and fidgets more while talking, his smile comes and goes. there’s even some of his distinctive high pitched, fake laughter sprinkled throughout the exchange, almost identical to later scenes where he's very, very obviously uncomfortable (like if raphael mocks him and magics off astarion's shirt to show the party his scars in act 2, or when confronting the gur children in their cell in act 3, etc etc).

siding with the goblins represents something deeply familiar to astarion, a level of cruelty he's more than familiar with and embraces likely because cruelty and duplicity, to him, go hand-in-hand with the power and freedom he craves so badly—but he won't stay the night with this tav, even if he approves of their actions. no, in this case, he'll keep to what's familiar and attempt to leave them in the forest under the cover of the very same darkness he resents having been cast into by cazador. when he gets caught, it sets him on edge, and everything he says becomes such a blatant lie to save face that tav would have to be completely oblivious not to see through him, or maybe just not care enough to.

but if tav saves the refugees? challenges his worldview and comes out victorious? oh, he'll complain of the poor rewards for his trouble at the party and whine about it being boring, but he decides to stay with tav through the night while they're asleep and on past dawn. he takes a moment to enjoy the morning sunlight, returned to his life after two centuries without. the same is true if you have high enough approval that he asks before the party, in which case, you've almost certainly hit his biggest approval gains: trusting him and supporting his safety. maybe he doesn't trip over his words when he speaks because, well, maybe this is someone he doesn't have to worry about. someone who's already more than proven themselves a foolish, heroic sort with a bleeding heart or otherwise demonstrated that they're already in his corner. in other words, not a threat—at least not to him.

does any of this make sense. i wanna study this guy under a microscope.

I'm going insane thinking about how Splinter started to hate it when the boys would endanger themselves everytime they tried to help Karai, and even resigned himself to the idea of losing her or putting her on the back burner to prioritize his sons' wellbeing. Scouring the city for her is one thing, but walking into enemy territory when there's a potential for something bad to happen to either of them or Karai is entirely different.

And it's not as though those decisions are ones he came to without difficulty; he was plainly depressed anytime something happened to Karai while he was powerless to help, and was saddened when it seemed like nothing could be done to save her at times.

That second clip is exceptionally painful and self-explanatory though: his trauma from the reward of gaining something or someone in life, and all too quickly coming face to face with the risk of that reward, has deeply shaped how unwilling he is when it comes to taking chances for a promise of happiness. He gained Tang Shen and Miwa, only to lose them, Saki, his father, and the dojo in the process. He bought baby turtles in the aftermath of that, only to be mutated into a giant rat almost immediately afterwards. He kept those baby turtles, but was forced to ostracize himself from society to protect them.

Being able to keep those turtles and raise them as his own was a huge reward, but getting Karai in that package was a deal that seemed too good to be true. Leo tries so hard to prove him wrong though, and it's admirable how the others fall in line to do the same.

And it seriously hurts to see Splinter be proven right in the end.

I can’t decide if I like Sonic being associated with fire or electricity more.

because like.

that’s fire. he’s a burning star. he’s so powerful it’s literally converted into heat.

it also works with him being a counterpart to Blaze.

but also-

electricity lends well to his speed. it’s definitely more a movie Sonic thing but it works well, (though in a different way,) with game Sonic.

and also him having electricity stuff with Shadow is so good.

my 6 month long hyperfixation is from a majorly dead fandom, due to the canon having garbage writing. i don't really mind it, just means there is not a lot of new content (art, fics, theories, etc) just the old stuff. great, made a sideblog to reblog that content, no worries. i enjoy delving into the depths of things

the ship itself is pretty bait-y and it feels like sometimes it's from delusions. idk what other people think/say really but obv I like the ship so whatever yk? block button exists for a reason.

and then today canon released more content. people who hadn't interacted with the ship for 4-5 years interacted today. seeing people come back to the fandom, even just to post once or twice, is SO bizarre. so nice too. most of the time I find myself watching shows because other people say its good and come later weeks after the release date, but being one of the first wave of people is so strange...

hmmmmmmm well as my current icon suggests I do like Vor a lot, her design is really cute and I like how cheeky and earnest she is. she'd probably be a hands-down favourite if we got a little more insight into what exactly she was doing with vidar and why she was making those choices.

in terms of making my brain want to chew on them like a dog toy, on reflection it's probably eraqus? cannot stop thinking about his rigid no-darkness worldview and how it presumably is deeply rooted in the scala system's teachings which are also the root of baldr's alienation and eventual fall to darkness... and how he presents himself as a goofy class clown guy, and he is a lil goofy but any time the chips go down he's deadly fucking serious and we know that part of him never changes. and yet! he fucking loves xehanort! then and later he's again and again like... hang on I need a visual demonstration

except he actually just puts the no darkness shirt back on again and again forever and keeps letting himself be surprised by xehanort doing cooked shit because he literally cannot reconcile "all darkness is always bad" with "I love and care about xehanort" without completely erasing, like, a lot of xehanort's actions and beliefs. which is a really interesting aspect of their relationship bc it's no fucking wonder than xehanort ends up with a lot less time for and devotion to eraqus than the reverse bc even though he clearly cares deeply for him at some point, years on years of having a huge part of your self be ignored by your closest loved one in service to their stupid inflexible morals totally would be alienating and erode the value of your relationship with them.

visually, I really like sigrun. love the cutesy fluffy fit and the stupid side ponytail. she looks like the personification of a khux pet.

Just thinking about them and this episode

Other than feeding into my imagination and making me wonder how things would've been if Mikey was nearly a decade younger and five feet shorter, it's adorable seeing how all of the guys treated little Mikey. Also, I have to say that the name "little Mikey" is adorable on its own, and it's funny that Mikey just takes it in stride when Raph still calls him that in the end of the episode.

It's not just the nicknames though (LEO CALLED HIM "LITTLE MAN"😭), Raph sounds like a concerned mom of the year when they hear Mikey screaming lol. And I neglected to clip it, but Raph looked ready to bite someone's head off when Fugitoid started to explain what the Neutrinos were instead of going straight to why Mikey was targeted. I guarantee you if Leo didn't always designate himself as the babysitter, Raph would be glued to Mikey-

Even though Raph and Donnie slid in a joke about Mikey's true self being a kid, the scene of them and Leo encouraging Mikey not so long afterwards is immensely delightful. Mikey honestly believed he was powerless as he was, and this is supported by his reaction to everyone turning to him like they had something in mind. They all praise him for his colossal imagination and Raph hammers home the fact that Mikey is in control.

And they had absolutely no reason to be so extra, but they'll always find a way to indulge Mikey and that was by gleefully tossing him into the air💀it's endearing though.
