These little daily exercises are proving quite useful to learn and practice new things, when I put in a small amount of effort.

do you have a preferred method to get vsts and other such instruments for a DAW?? im poor as heck and dont know ANYTHING about piracy, im so scared of getting goobered by people on the internet

i wish i knew more about the best go-to sites for pirating rn unfortunately i have no clue. ppl on the internet can have such shit intentions too so i dont even know where to look or who to ask. but also here's some free + VERY cheap things u may consider (below the break):

vital synth (i will always shill for vital bc i use it constantly and its free lol)

ob-xd synth (it says buy for $49, but the free download is on the left. the buy link is just a donate)

klanghelm plugins (all these are made by one dude. mjuc is a great vintage style compressor, the dc8c is a pretty featured compressor for the price, sdrr has a particularly nice tube saturation/distortion, and vumt is a great metering plugin, i have vumt on every single project since 2019)

analog obsession (if you donate $5 to their patreon you can get every single plugin they make. also all made and maintained by one person. lots of different things, so i recommend just downloading everything and exploring the functions of the plugins)

tokyo dawn labs (all very high quality mixing stuff. they have free versions of most of their premium stuff and they're quite featured despite being free. ez.)

kilohearts (they recently made all their main effects free. and if you want their flagship stuff, its all rent-to-own as well.)

sforzando (soundfont player. if you dont know what soundfonts are, theyre essentially really condensed, lightweight sampled instruments. they can often sound rlly cheap or tacky [which might be good, i definitely love that sound] but just install this and google [instrument] soundfont and just find lots of free instruments that way)

togu audio line (some free effects and instruments if you scroll down. but i also recommend TAL Sampler if you want a cool sampler and can afford it)

meldaproduction (has a free plugin suite. theres an annoying watermark at the bottom for free versions, but everyone understands. shit is expensive)

native instruments (they have the komplete start bundle which is just a bunch of free decent stuff)

musicradar FREE SAMPLES (ive sworn by a few of the sample resources that i've gotten from musicradar as far back as 2011 lol)

looperman FREE SAMPLES (looperman is a user-sourced sample website where ppl upload samples they've made* and you can just download and use them for free. sometimes people request specific credit, so check for that if you can. *NOTE: its very possible for people to upload unlicensed samples or stuff they didn't make so use your best judgement when sorting through stuff)

freesound FREE SAMPLES (freesound rules always reliable)

synth1 (AHHHH IM SO HAPPY I CAN RECOMMEND THIS RIGHT NOW!!!! synth1 used to be abandonware but was finally picked up again and is supported by modern systems once more. i used this religiously from 2013-2017. and i'm going to start using it again honestly)

valhalladsp (this is the only exclusively premium thing i'm going to leave in this thread [aside from bitwig, below], but it's just that god damn good. every plugin of theirs is $50, so if you can manage to go for ValhallaVintageVerb and/or ValhallaDelay you will basically never need another reverb/delay ever again; would recommend NOT pirating from them if you can help it bc theyre definitely a very small company but u know.. ur call)

bitwig (if you need a DAW, i can now heartily recommend Bitwig. it's on the rent to own program through splice if you're ok getting it legally...)

i know this isnt what u asked but i hope its still helpful. i've also rescinded my recommendations for spitfire audio bc the company was revealed to be run by a bunch of queerphobic knuckleheads. everything in this list i have personally used for my own music and can vouch for them from actual experience (YES even bitwig, i made the song "Futura" on Carousel exclusively with Bitwig, making it the first time i've made an entire song outside of Ableton since 2014).

With pleasure!! Saw-scaled vipers are some of my very favorite snakes in the world.

They're called "saw-scaled" because their scales have these little serrated edges, and their threat display is to coil up into an overlapping C shape and rub the scales together. It makes a really cool sort of sizzling noise. A cool vocab word for you: this is called "stridulation!" Check it out, this video from the BBC has a good example of what it sounds like:

The saw-scaled threat display is theorized to be to eliminate water loss that might happen as a result of hissing. These are desert snakes, after all!

Indian saw-scaled vipers are one of the "big four," the species responsible for the greatest number of medically-significant snake bites on humans in the Indian continent. The other three are the Russell's viper, the common krait, and the Indian cobra.

They're easily the smallest of the big four! They average about two feet long, and smaller individuals are common.

Saw-scaled vipers are crazy cute, but they're actually super challenging to work with, even when compared to other venomous snakes. They tend to be very nervous and jumpy, and they have a habit of striking so enthusiastically they can move towards you without meaning to.

Their venom is also unusually potent for such small snakes; before antivenin, about 20% of bites were fatal. That's very powerful by viper standards!

Now, their venom has very useful medical applications! Saw-scaled viper venom has elements that make it a useful ingredient in medical procedures designed to test blood clotting factors. It's also used in anticonvulsant medications.

At my lab, we have several saw-scaled vipers, but my favorite is a little spitfire named Trigger. He's pretty calm by saw-scaled viper standards but he can still be a little menace. He's an Egyptian saw-scaled viper, here's the best picture I have of him (hook for scale):

Continuing to find making ambient-ish jam things to be lowkey therapeutic compared to actual full-fledged songwriting, which is much more personal. Needed to get out of my head and get inspired late last night, and ran the Volca Beats through a bunch of silly DAW effects after finding I didn't really have the right cables to run it through a physical delay pedal yet.

And then layered on a little more, but tried to keep it sparse. The lead synth line is from some new Analog Lab V Buchla preset pack, although it doesn't really sound like what I'd expect from a Buchla. Which I think was the intent of the preset pack.

There's also some Spitfire Labs BBC Orchestra in there, I really like that set of instruments. But whatever I did to the poor cellos turned it into a panning, filtered, wheezing thing, and I love it.

Here have some pre insanity -completely drop kicks canon- headcanons for Sephiroth (because playing crisis core broke my heart and I’m scared of ever crisis.)

(also ship warning for AGSCZ -don’t like don’t read!)

Young Sephiroth didn’t like having his hair brushed -especially by Hojo. He would scream bloody murder at any lab-techs that tried. In the end -because he got so strong and could actually hurt people when he got distressed- they left him to do it himself. This ended up in Sephiroth having to have his hair cut short at age 11 because he didn’t know how to brush it properly and was just causing a Matt under the top layer of hair.

Carrying on from this, as an adult the only person who has ever been able to brush Sephiroth’s is Cloud, because he’s so gentle and patient as he brushes out the knots that it doesn’t make Sephiroth feel like his scalps on fire.

Genesis is however the one who taught Sephiroth how to brush long hair properly.

Sephiroth can’t mix foods on his fork. He eats one thing at a time in a specific order and if he deviates from the order it ruins his enjoyment of the meal. With pasta dishes he will eat the pasta, then the meat/whatever it’s mixed with. He’s never outwardly complained or made a big deal, but Angeal has picked up on his distress a couple of times and now specifically plans meals accordingly.

My poor boy doesn’t do public speaking or reading out loud. His natural speech is soft spoken and full of crutch vocalisations. He can read about a 100 words per minute and can memorise whole books like a pro, but he lacks the actual ability to deliver vocally. It’s why Angeal usually handles public relations and motivating troops. Seph can relay battle plans swiftly and efficiently but he stumbles with knowing the right words to rally the troops.

His natural relaxed pose is having his foot hooked around the other ankle, with his arms behind his back and hands holding his elbows. Only his partners know this to be his true relaxed pose. It means he’s vulnerable enough to look soft and approachable with them.

He used to be secretly jealous of Gen’s childhood stuffed toy. It sits on the redheads bed and Seph started dropping it into his own laps when he sat on the bed. Genesis noticed this and took Seph on a date with Zack to pick out a stuffed animal he liked. Seph bitches that he’s not a child and that it’s embarrassing until he sees a silver jointed teddy in a hospital gown. It’s part of a collection where the money goes to under plate kids hospitals, and there’s something so familiar about the bear that Sephiroth starts crying. Gen buys it for him and it sits on Sephs bed or in his lap when he’s feeling fragile.

He doesn’t have a favourite partner. He loves Zack because the boy is cuddly and infectiously happy; He loves Gen because he’s deceptively kind but he can rely on him not to bullshit him when there’s a problem; he loves Geal because he’s so solid and allows Seph to lean on him in a way that Sephiroth has never had; he loves Cloud because he’s a spitfire with a heart of gold who’s not willing to back down just because someone’s bigger than him. He loves them so much some days he feels like he might actually die from it.

I have more but this feels like a good place to stop. I dunno man, Sephiroth is so multifaceted and sometimes I just like to think about the stuff that makes him human, ya know?

Great question!

The sounds used in the ISAT soundtrack are as follows:

Various audio effect plugins

Spitfire Labs is free to download, you can always get a bunch of free plugins from Native Instruments, and the chiptune sounds are just some really basic square (and other) waves out of Massive, which can be done with any number of plugins (I know there are loads of free chiptune VSTs out there).

We're actually planning a series of tutorial videos on mixing and compression, and may actually include an additional video about sound design with additive synthesis.

To answer your question, no, at this time we are not planning to release a sound pack as all of the sounds used are from commercial products, but we're happy to go over making your own sounds so you can find your voice in sound design. If there are any tracks in particular where you're wondering "How did they do that?" please feel free to submit another ask and we'd gladly go over the details!

listen, I hear all of your “Argyle arrives in Hawkins stoked to see Max only to learn about Billy’s death” and all that jazz. it has caused me great anguish. but have you considered:

Argyle arrives in Hawkins all, “Hey, it’s Mad Max!” - which, yes, is a nickname he picked up from all the times Billy used it - and giving her the biggest bear hug, all excited because he hasn’t seen her in years and he’s always loved Billy’s spitfire little sister. He’s talking a mile a minute, telling her all about his adventures with the secret agent men and the crazy helicopters and religious super genius computer hacker and her kickass older sister. And Max is just! Delighted by it! She’s missed Argyle and all his quirks. She’s soaking up this little bit of home that the Byers brought back with them.

And then Argyle starts to settle down, and he lets Max and Jonathan introduce him to everyone, but you can tell that he’s expecting to see someone else. He keeps looking around as if counting heads, because surely someone is missing, and once he’s sure he’s shook every hand he’s like, “Max, amiga, where’s your brother at? Billy the Kid too cool for all of you, huh? I bet that’s it.”

Max’s face falls and she tells him, “Not exactly.” She looks at Steve, doesn’t have to say a word. Steve knows what she’s asking and he’s already starting up the car. Max tells Argyle, “We’ll explain on the way.”

Off they go to some super locked-down wing of the hospital, a makeshift mini-lab made up just for Billy after he’d been rescued from the Upside Down. Max tells Argyle everything: the Demogorgons, the Mind Flayer, Billy sacrificing himself. “Damn, manita, I always knew your bro was badass, but that’s some next-level shit right there.”

Steve covers the rest, tells Argyle about getting stuck in the Upside Down- “You mean the mind fight arena that freaky girl dipped into?” -and finding Billy there, how he’d been real fucked up, and how the secret agent people, in Argyle’s terms, swooped in and whisked him off to the hospital.

“Damn,” says Argyle, who just days ago thought the weirdest thing that had ever happened to him was a particularly funky ‘shrooms trip. “Is he okay, though? I mean, Billy, he’s one tough dude. He’s okay, right? All things considered?”

“He’ll be okay.” Max has to force the words out, because up until now her brother had been d-e-a-d dead as a doornail and she’s still pinching herself, still convincing herself that all of this is real.

They make up some excuse to get Argyle in to see Billy. “He’s a cousin,” Max explains, “from California. He flew in as soon as he heard.” The guards don’t quite buy it, but Max is there every damn day and a pleading phone call from Max to Doc Owens seals the deal. In they go.

Billy’s sedated, for his own sake. The Starcourt injuries healed, but without medical attention the scarring is nasty and everything’s a bit…well, fucked up. Not to mention the months he spent in an unfettered hell dimension with zero protection, no access to medicine, you get the picture. He’s thinner than Argyle remembers. His head’s been shaved, leads attached monitoring brain activity. He’s bruised up and scarred up more than Argyle thought a person could be. But he’s still Billy. Argyle goes right up to him, grabs his hand and starts to tell him how much he’s missed him, how much Billy’s missed back home, all the crazy stuff that’s gone down, because no matter what, freaky-deaky Upside Down shit and all, he’s still Billy.
