Kpop songs I love as an aro

Its pride month and this is how I, an aro kpop stan, am choosing to celebrate and raise awareness

1. Anti romantic - txt

Sorry I'm an anti-romantic

I don't believe it anymore, romantic

I burn my whole heart

Says it in the title lol. I don't think the translated lyrics really are "anti-romantic" but it sure is fun to sing that line

2. Twit - hwasa

You make me loyal

You make me hero

You make me genius

You give so much but why are you the only unhappy one?

Cuz you only breathe for me

You look so lonely

I find that in a lot of love songs, especially in kpop, there's this obsession that makes me uncomfortable. Like "I only need you and I will change myself for you and without this relationship I'm depressed etc" and it feels very wrong. But I feel like this song is directly against that kind of romance and she's encouraging this guy to focus on something other than their relationship, and I really appreciate that

3. Friends - bts

You are my soulmate

I love love love love this song. It's a celebration of a deep friendship, and jimin and taehyung saying they're platonic soulmates like this is just amazing. I want what they have

4. What is love - twice

Every day, I felt love only in the movies

Or in books or dramas

Mmm, that’s how I learned love

Okay this song does put romance on a bit of a pedestal BUT I find it relatable, especially when I didn't know I was aro. Seeing romance in media but not experiencing it myself, I often wondered what it was like and thought that one day I would meet someone who made me feel that. And now I know I'm aro, I like this song cus yeah what is love and why does it make people feel this way? Please let me know I'm so confused

5. Happening - akmu

It’s made it all too serious

Idk if this is accurate but I interpret this song as being about unrequited feelings, like chanhyuks part is the person in love and suhyun is the person who doesn't feel the same. When people express romantic feelings for you when you don't reciprocate, it hurts and it's difficult to know what to say (especially when you're repulsed like me), and I feel like this song captures that attitude

6. How can I say - day6

I hate me now

I hate myself for not having butterflies

From some point, my heart doesn’t react anymore

Sometimes I hate being aro, I think we can all struggle with our queer identities especially when we are surrounded by a amatonormative heteronormative society, and I find it definitely happens when someone has a crush on me that I cannot reciprocate. This song is very relatable during those times

7. You don't shine anymore - stella jang

'Good friends are like the stars

You don't see in the bright sunshine

They shine in the dark'

While this song is overall sad I find these lyrics really beautiful. Any song that appreciates friendship like this instantly has a place in my heart. And shout out to her for having a lot of non romance songs with really good lyrics and a really unique sound, she deserves a lot more credit and love

8. Not spring, love, or cherry blossoms - high4 & iu

Everyone but me is in love,

singing spring songs

Flowers bloom and sway before my eyes

But I want to hear something else

Something to sweep away everything

Not spring, love or cherry blossoms

It wouldn't be my list without iu. I find the feeling of being surrounded by love, especially in songs, and feeling like you're missing out on something and being tired of hearing about it very relatable (and like with a lot of ius songs I love the nature imagery)

9. Dance on my own - loona

I don't need somеone to feel something

It's just me, mysеlf, and I love it

I just wanna dance, dance, dance on my own

We love songs that fight against the idea that you need a romantic partner. It may be more of a break up song but that's okay, I'll take what I can

10. Feel special - twice

One moment I feel like I’m nothing at all

Like no one would notice if I were gone

But then when I hear you calling me

I feel loved, I feel so special

Another song about the importance of friendship and platonic love. I know the members didn't write the lyrics, but it was written about their relationships with each other and how they help each other, and I think that's really beautiful

And tbh I appreciate just any song that isn't about romance because most songs are about romance and I'm tired, it's like a pleasant surprise when I find lyrics that are about anything else
