On one hand, Unheard (best described as a detective sim) is *extremely good*, like, half a step down from Obra Din good, they nail four out of five cases hands down, and the fourth would probably be just as good if I hadn’t, y’know, actually worked backstage community theater for a number of years (got myself confused about a major clue because Opening Night Doesn’t Work Like That, among other things), but. the theme and structure is mostly intended to introduce at least one critical or historically contextual work followed by examples of the type of narrative in question.
in unit 1, this is the idea of "How do people talk about their own experiences in the context of YouTube and playing video games?" across three rather different kinds of documentaries. unit 2 is intended to take that lens of who is telling what tale and dial in on challenge running, where i first noticed the way some videos turn the story of overcoming a challenge into its own narrative that is distinct from but related to the narrative events of the game itself. unit 3 circles back to the bigger picture with a variety of examples that, to me, are maximally metanarrative, the emergent story of the player-narrator now functionally replacing the game's embedded narrative.

this one is highly underdeveloped, but i'd love to work out something more robust building on randomizer challenges that produce intentionally bizarre, semi-ironic "lore," and bois-esque endeavors to break games so hard the story itself crumbles. but that's really out of scope so i'm just including the links to things i couldn't bear to get rid of. more rambling abt the challenge runs I chose under the cut.
Challenge runs represent one of the most obvious places to start, due to being extremely plentiful and having a hook that makes a "here's how I did X thing in Y video game" format almost unavoidable. Minimalist 100% is an underrated and sweet straightforward example that I mostly include as a baseline for reporting-out style narrative; here are the facts, here's what happened, this is the thing that it is. Mogswamp's 100 Days on Just Dirt is similar in style, but the physical measuring of days is a delightful and, more importantly, external narrative device.
Now oriented, we get a taste of Ceave Gaming's narrative approach to Mario challenges with the no-crouching run, and while we still aren't at the degree of player-characters being constructed for the narrative's sake, the spirited belief in crouching sets the stage for other rhetoric in more extreme cases we'll see later.
The Backlogs' entire body of work qualifies here, but GRIME is the strongest inspiration for putting this list together. I include the DS3 firebombs run because what was initially a factual description of how his wife's use of firebombs inspired him to play differently in the original DS1 firebombs run has developed into full-blown multi-game narrative arc with the Firebomb Goddess (his wife, who also voices the character) compelling his in-game character to achieve his destined quest. Grime takes that even further,
In-Game Documentaries
I include Life as a Bokoblin mostly as a contrast to My Life as a Barber - there is a level of fictionalization and roleplay involved in the Zelda in-game documentary that highlights exactly what I want to single out when I am talking about metanarrative, the story about a story.

this post is just some thoughts on/speculation re: the recent news (the new blog post and the IGN article etc). under a cut for length.
I’m so excited for the official first look at the gameplay!! (ofc) and psyched that it’s happening in early summer as opposed to late summer like August or thereabouts. it feels surreal in a good way that it’s now basically ‘DA:TV Eve’ :D With 15+ minutes of gameplay from the start of the game, we could gain a lot of new information and context such as who the PC is, where the story kicks off and the premise/framing of the story, who the starting companions are, etc.
it surprised me that the name of the game changed, but I like the new title, I think it’s cool and unusual and from dev comments it's not something they decided on a whim or anything. a title change makes sense in the light that Solas isn’t the only focus of the game or the only player on the board – that he’s a key player, but not the heart of it, and the companions are who is being centered. in any event the feel of a title to like say and stuff for me doesn’t affect gameplay or what it’s like interacting with characters etc. I would play this game if it was called Dragon Age: The Quantum Blorbening anyway.
‘The Veilguard’ is the name of our crew of companions, as in a group or faction. (It reminds me of “the Kingsguard”.) Obviously we can see from the name that this group will be involved in protecting and defending the barrier between the Fade and the waking world in some manner. I wonder, will it be a group we form, or a group we join/are recruited into? They must be a fairly recent addition to Thedas. What’s their relation to the Veil Jumpers, if any? Does the existence of the Veilguard imply that the theories that the game will begin with the Veil torn down already aren’t the case? Will the Veilguard always want to protect the Veil during the story, or will there come a point when they re-evaluate that idea? It sounds like they’re always able to take down the new evil threat, but will they always be able (or always want to) to prevent the Veil from being destroyed? also, in-world, who named them The Veilguard?
Maybe our PC’s own ‘title’ (Warden, Hero, Inquisitor, Herald of Andraste, kinda thing) will be Veil Guardian or Guardian of the Veil or something like that..? we obviously won’t be the only veil guard, but while the DA:O PC was ‘the Hero of Ferelden’, in-game they often were referred to in passing simply as Grey Warden or The Warden, despite there being another Warden present (Alistair). When the devs have been talking about The Avengers, I think about that and also get Guardians of the Galaxy kinda vibes. With Varric and Harding’s storyline in DA: The Missing, I wonder if he will be like the Nick Fury (he kind of brought the Avengers together and coordinated them right? Or at least recruited them all, put the team together?), with Harding joining the team itself..? Avengers assemble, form Voltron, etc. with stuff like “you’ll unite this team of unforgettable heroes”, it sounds like the PC (as in previous games) will end up leading the group in some manner, even if they are new to the squad. That reminds me of the HoF. ^^
Somewhere out there in the multiverse, on a different plane, DA4 came out and it was a multiplayer game. it’s good to hear about refocusing on creating a singleplayer game with a focus on characters, choices & decisions, worldbuilding, companionship with characters with their own deep storylines that intersect with the main plot etc, with the customizable hero and the cast of their companions at the center of an SP story. and no online team members, no live service etc.
The world of Thedas itself is still my favorite ‘character’ :D

I don’t mind one way or the other about most gameplay specifics. Some of the aspects of combat gameplay (of course, I’m just guessing based on reading some lines in an article atm), like the pausing the action and the ability wheel to give orders, sound like ME: Andromeda gameplay, and Andromeda had good gameplay/combat gameplay that was fun and fluid to play.
One thing I am 😔 about tho is the change of party size from 3 companions to 2. I love Mass Effect and it’s a 3-person squad in that series too (and it works well ofc both in terms of gameplay and dynamics), but I’ll still miss having 3 companions with me in DA :< esp in a game with such a focus on the characters/companions. What can I say, I’m just a blorbo hoarder. I’ll also miss all party members being directly controllable.
I wonder if the 7 companions (seven is a lucky number ^^) will have a class split like 2 warrior/2 rogue/2 mages+1 ‘unique/special’ companion (e.g. Dog, Shale – maybe the flaming head Skellington?) or +1‘extra/secret’ companion or something (e.g. Loghain).
Also, speculatively, being that we’ve never had a qunari woman as a companion before, I hope one is a qunari woman, and since we’ve never had a dwarf woman as a companion before in a ‘main’ game (ily sigrun), I hope one will be a dwarf woman. That also makes me curious about the race and gender split of the 7. Maybe it’s like 2 humans/2 elves/1 qunari/1 dwarf/1 ‘unique or special’ (e.g. Shale)..? Maybe it’s like 3 men/3 women/1 nonbinary person, or the first 6 are a mix of men, women and nonbinary people, and the seventh is something like Dog or a spirit or something?
There were 6 companions in ME1. In DAII, there were 8 in the base game (Seb was DLC), but Bethany/Carver were only around for part of the game. today one of the main things people love most about DAII is its cast of companions. ^^ also, with the way the devs talk about the companions, it's giving "Found Family" trope vibes. that's another thing that people love a lot about DAII. ^^
will it just be the 7 of us, like the crew in DA2? Will it be like in DA:I, where the organization (Inquisition/Veilguard in this case) has main figures/an inner circle, but also commands other people? Or will it be like Mass Effect, where you have a crew which is comprised of companions (in this case 7) who join you on the field as well as a few other developed characters that hang out at ‘home base’? on the number paring down from 9 to 7, I’d rather quality and depth over quantity. In ME2, Kasumi and Zaeed (as DLC) didn’t have proper conversations on the ship. I wonder if “pare down” refers to it being versus the number of companions we had in DA:I, or whether at some point in development of DA:TV there used to be more than 7 companions and some were cut.
each of the 7 companions is from/represents a different faction. For example, while not stated to be a companion in the trailer he was revealed in, it's common speculation that he is, and Davrin is a Grey Warden. Going by the 4 factions Varric and Harding deal with in The Missing, surely 4 of these companion backstory factions in DA:TV are the Grey Wardens, the Antivan Crows, the Veil Jumpers and the Shadow Dragons. And the other 3..? the Lords of Fortune are a new addition to the lore that have also been prominent in recent material. A Grey Warden, an Antivan Crow, and a Veil Jumper walk into a bar.. : ) the composition of The Veilguard is reminding me of Duncan’s words about the Grey Wardens: “Men and women from every race, warriors and mages, barbarians and kings.”

Skellington Guy (green flaming skull guy) could easily be the (speculative!!) ‘unique/special 7th one’, assuming a 2/2/2 warrior-rogue-mage classbreak down among the other 6 (which is speculation only too ofc). lmk what you think : )

I’m nervous about upsetting or getting the new companions killed already HH.
It’s nice to read how strongly they feel about the new characters and their stories.  
I’m so excited to explore all the regions and varied biomes.
I’m still not clear/sure on whether “you can romance the companions you want” means all 7 companions are bi/pan+, or that there are no non-romanceable companions among the 7 (like no Stens or Varrics), or whether it was more like a general off-hand comment that can’t be read into that much.
I wonder if the Varric-narrated in-game cinematic from 1 year ago plays at the start of the game? Or after we meet Varric?

All of Thedas is at risk from a big, scary new threat. As we know, Solas was never the only being interested in the Veil and its removal or destruction. (you can also outline lots of reasons why it should be brought down, like the way the world used to be, elven immortality, the effect on mages/magic etc). it’s also long been theorized that Solas isn’t the main threat/main antagonist in DA4, and maybe more like the Dragon to someone/something else, or a figure like Loghain in DA:O, who you can kill or convince to join you in your fight against the real overarching threat, in that case the Blight. Corypheus broke the Veil in the Red Lyrium future. Demons always want to cross it. the Evanuris are trapped in some way that involves the Veil being in place. Flemythal can never achieve true vengeance while her killers are sleeping or imprisoned somewhere she can’t reach. The Bio25 book says that “The Evil Gods have Thedas in their sights” and that “shadows of the past stir”. It also says that the “Deep Roads teem with evils both new and old”. There are theories about a double Blight. The most recent trailer has someone gushing “Glory to the Risen Gods. They’ve come to deliver this world”. Tevinter Nights hints at fck-knows-what – places and beings, “past the Veil of our world, neither demon nor spirit”, things with chthonic kinda vibes. Etc. a threat being “unleashed” has the implication of someone let something go.. or someone.. let something in... there are also other groups and beings to consider, like the Old Gods, the Forgotten Ones, the Executors.
I thought this phrasing from the IGN article was interesting, though it's not a direct quote from Gary. “Solas, who helped create the Veil, now wants to destroy it.” Helped create? Until now it was more like “Solas created the Veil”. Helped who..? 👁️
The other evil threats/the real threats, these ‘other gods’ (Gary McKay mentions them twice: “it might not just be Solas”, “the Dread Wolf is not the only god” you need be worried about), are surely the upside-down figures in this mural, right? Surely they are the “Evil Gods” (whoever /they/ are) mentioned in the Bio25 book, right? :D

But back when he was 15, he didn’t have that reputation of a singer, and he started his streaming first before moving to a new occupation, but still maintaining the previous one.
He had very few viewers, and he was kinda cringe. But at least you were there! 
(Background information now) You had befriended him in your freshman year of high school along with a guy named Dazai. The three of you had a lot of fun, the two guys always being chaotic and yelling at each other while you tried to calm them down.
Although you kinda got in trouble often, you still continued being stupid. You’ll grow out of it! (Debatable)
Chuuya had at some point expressed his goals of being a streamer or singer, so you and Dazai encouraged him to start with the former, so he did.
Initially, he did gameplays with commentary, but those games were first person shooters or anything online that included fighting in a team against another. Simply put, he raged a lot.
And now in the present, he still does, but it’s gotten a little more expressive since he doesn’t have anyone to scold him about what he’s saying aside from you.
He has a variety of content on his page now, like gameplays (still), just talking, random challenges, IRL streaming, etc. The different forms of entertainment really helps with maintaining his popularity.
Sometimes during streams, he would tell his viewers that he’s gonna do something for a minute until he returns. That minute is used to check on you.
“Are you hungry? We can order take out”, “You alright?”, “We can cuddle and watch a movie after I’m done”, all that is concluded with a kiss on your face.
You do like to mess with him sometimes. Sitting under his desk while he’s gaming and watching him (Just don’t screw his playthrough, he won’t talk to you for a while), going in his chat and sending a message (That shows up highlighted/on screen) about some chore he still has to do, and the like.
Anything harmless because you care about him and he appreciates that.
One time, you were making dinner and he suddenly started screaming loudly. You ensured the kitchen wouldn’t burn before knocking lightly on his door and asking if he was okay.
In response, he comes to the door and opens it a little. “Shit, sorry. Don’t worry, everything’s fine. I’ll make it up to you later,” and he takes your hand, placing a gentle kiss on it, then going back to his chair.
When he uploaded some clips of his stream to his channel on YouTube or the equivalent of the site, you saw that the reason for his scream was because he was arguing with a friend? And the microphone couldn’t capture the high volume so the yell came out quieter than it really was and the mic just cut off.
Another time, he was talking with his friends about something that had happened, and Dazai (who was playing with him, of course) just muted Chuuya’s mic midsentence. After that he went offline, ended the stream, and went to your shared bedroom to cuddle with you, pout on his face. He recounted what happened and you chuckled lightly, embracing him.
Eventually, his old streams from when he was in high school were found (He deleted the clips after saving them on a drive because they were precious memories) and uploaded.
The video included the time where he was playing a multiplayer game (Just Call of Duty, really) and there was an after death mic that allowed the dead player to say something for a second to their killer before respawning. The things he said included, “You’re so mean!”, “Hahah, pendejo!” (asshole in Spanish), “I don’t even wanna play anymore” (In a whiny voice. He said that to you and Dazai, but the mic was on.)
He barked at someone in the game results screen
At the discovery of his old streams, Chuuya panicked before laughing at them. Sure, they were embarrassing, but the comments loved it. He decided to upload the rest of his saved ones so everyone can enjoy them.
Akutagawa, his friend, sometimes play with Chuuya’s group, and when the former plays and does well, Chuuya just yells out “That’s my boy! THAT’S MY BOY! GAHDAM-” and he’s cut off. He’s a huge supporter for Aku and will cheer him on whenever he plays.
After his streams, Chuuya goes to spend time with you. It’s always wholesome and you both would never trade it for anything in the world. You scratch at his scalp while he buries his face in your chest, complaining about Dazai bullying him, or how he was getting dominated by the other players. He always has fun things to tell to you.
What you always love is that while on stream, he seems tough, loud, and in general very entertaining. But when he’s alone with you, no cameras or anything, he’s so soft and cute. Just your cute little boyfriend.
Although he can catch you off guard with his loudness, he always apologizes and makes you forget it. Despite the two of you sharing the fact that you’re both in a relationship, there’s still people prying into his life, wanting to know more. Chuuya did say that it may be uncomfortable, but you still have a large support system consisting of his fans.
A couple of his streams include you. Mainly the IRL ones, but you sometimes join him in his games. The viewers love seeing you two together and always request for more of you.
Sometimes, he practices with his guitar on stream, playing any requests from viewers, and you’re off to the side and out of the camera’s view. If there’s ever a romantic song, he dedicates it to you. A lot of love songs are asked for.
Going back to streams with Aku, he once had a coughing fit while on mic, and someone rigged it to have a voice effect. His coughs were so screwed up, it just sounded like a weird echo into the abyss.
Overall, he’s very fun to be with. You’re blessed to be the one he trusts to show his soft side to. Anyone who’s able to be his friend at least is lucky to have that title (at least in the present time).

It had been a week since you were rescued by The Avengers, Wanda was very protective of you and gentle. She knew you were going through a mix of emotions as you got settled in. She had spent every day with you, never really leaving your side. You loved spending time with the redhead that rescued you, she made you feel a type of comfort that you haven’t had the fortune of receiving since you were a baby, being held tightly in your mother’s arms. 
Today would be the first day Wanda left you alone for more than 10 minutes. It wasn’t by choice, but she had work to do that couldn’t be pushed off another day. She expected it to only take a couple of hours, so she took you to the common room with some of your favorite toys and asked FRIDAY to set up a live camera feed to her phone so she could keep an eye on you as she worked. It’s not that she didn’t trust Nat, in fact, quite the opposite. Out of all the residents at the compound, Natasha was the one Wanda trusted the most, it’s just that she can be a bit rough around the edges and has never really had much experience with children. 
“I have some work to do, malyshka. Do you think you’ll be ok hanging out here with Natasha for a little while?” Wanda asked softly
“W-will you come back?” you muttered just above a whisper, not wanting to offend Natasha but at the same time worried about losing your favorite person.
“Yes, of course, moya lyubov, I’ll just be a couple of rooms over if you need me,” she promised as her fingers brushed the stray hairs from your face. 
“Promise?” 
“I promise. Peter should be back from school soon, maybe you two can continue your lightsaber battle,” she suggested. You loved spending time with Peter, he was really fun to play with and got really into your imaginary gameplay. 
Your eyes instantly lit up at the mention of the high school boy, “Petey?!” you exclaimed. 
Your smile was contagious and Wanda couldn't help but return one to you, “yes, now I’ll be just in that room there if you need anything” she points
You nod your head in response as you head over to the couch to sit with Nathasha as Wanda heads out of the room. There is a beat of silence as you’ve never been alone together and feel too shy to start a conversation, so you sit there awkwardly until Nat breaks the silence by asking if you want to play with your stuffies that Wanda left in the room with you. Keeping your focus down on your twiddling thumbs you shake your head in response.
“How about tv?” the redhead queries, as your gaze moves upward while you think over the option and then eventually look her way, “ok, can we watch uh, Bluey?” 
“Sure thing,” Nat confirmed as she turned on the tv. You leaned back and relaxed into the couch as you watched your favorite blue dog on the screen. The songs were so catchy they usually got you excited as you sang along, but you just couldn’t find the energy to partake. After the first episode finishes you turn to Natasha with sleepy eyes, “Natty, m’tiwerd” You usually take a nap around this time.
Nat’s heart melted, she really didn’t like children but you were just too cute, “you are? Come here,” she lifted her right arm up so that you could nuzzle into her side. You snuggle in and get comfortable as she switches slowly between running her hands softly through your hair and drawing circles along your back as you drift off for a nap.

Half an hour goes by and Nat has had the urge to go to the bathroom for 15 minutes now but she refuses to get up while you’re so soundly asleep against her side. In an attempt to keep herself distracted; she put the tv on low sound, so as not to wake you, but that's not enough anymore. At this point, she’s fidgeting with her fingers, trying not to make too much movement. 
Just as she considered slithering out from under you to relieve herself, Peter came barrelling through the doorway with his schoolbag and laptop. Not so quietly plopping down at the counter with his schoolwork, you began to stir from your nap, “Petey?” you wonder groggily, unsure if that noise was him or someone else.
“Hey, Y/N” Peter waved from the counter
“Oh good, do you mind watching her for a few minutes?” Nat pleaded, darting out of the room without waiting for a response. 
“Uh, sure” he replied to an empty doorway, hoping she would be quick because he really had to work on his school project for tomorrow. 
Hopping off the couch, you made your way over to Peter and were instantly intrigued by the items strewn about on the counter, “Woah! What's dis?”
“It's a school project that’s due tomorrow, we have to recreate the solar system. Most of my class is just using styrofoam balls but I 3D printed these so they would be more detailed.” He explains excitedly
“Like the moon?” you ask as you climb up onto the seat next to Peter. 
“Kind of, but we actually don’t have to include the moons. Just the planets and the sun.” He explains as he lays all the balls out in proper order.
“Isn’t da sun yellow?” you ask, confused why all the balls laid out on the counter are grey.
“Well, yea. I have to paint it. That was just the color of my material.”
“PAINT? Petey can I paint it?” you pleaded with an expression resembling a puppy dog.
“No, this is for school. I can’t have help” Peter responded, hoping that would deter you from pushing the request further. 
“Ok,” you replied defeated, “I watch?”
“Yes, you can watch” 
You watch Peter paint each ball of his model while you ask countless questions that pop into your brain. Not long after, Nat reenters the room. She glances over at you keeping Peter company and then sits back on the couch to continue watching tv. 
Being brought to the compound was scary at first, but you were starting to get used to it. Peter and Wanda both did a great job of making you feel comfortable. You felt like you could start to open up around them and instead of shutting off your curiosity behind a barricaded wall, you let your personality and questions slowly seep through. 
Peter did his best to answer all the questions you had, but sometimes it was a variety of, “why is the earth green and blue?” followed by, “where does the word blue come from?” and truthfully, he didn’t have the time or the answers for all of your questions.
While keeping his patience with each of your questions, soon enough, he finishes the coat of paint for each ball and assembles them onto the model. 
“Why does dis one have an eyeball?” you ask reaching forward to point at Jupiter. Instead of just pointing at the planet, you end up bopping the side of the ball with the red circle. The action from your finger causes the ball to fall from its place on the wire and onto the floor where it cracks open.
You stood there in shock for what felt like forever but was really only a few seconds as Peter immediately scoops up the pieces to inspect the damage, “Why couldn’t you have just let it be, y/n?” he snaps, “you ask too many questions!”
The disdain in his voice causes your face to flush as tears start to fill in your eyes. You couldn’t run out of the room quick enough, you felt embarrassed and the only thing you wanted right now was Wanda. You wanted her to hold you and tell you everything is ok, you just wanted her to fix everything like she always seemed so good at doing. Most of all though, you wanted to get away from Peter. You could tell how angry he was with you. 
Remembering the door Wanda pointed to hours earlier, you ran straight for it. Barging in without a second thought, you found Wanda sitting behind a desk and you continued to run up to her as tears began actively falling upon your cheeks. You ran with your arms outstretched, waiting to be enveloped in her embrace.
“Malyshka, what’s wrong?” Wanda was immediately concerned that you were crying.
“Petey… hate… me” you managed out through sobs and unsteady breaths
“Breathe y/n, calm down sweetie. You’re ok, What happened?” She did her best to calm you down by running her hand along your back and bouncing you slightly as she held you. Natasha joined the two of you in the doorway to try and help Wanda put the pieces together.
“I-I bwoke. I bwoke his homework, and now he hates me.” you continued to sob into the redhead’s neck. 
It wasn’t long before Wanda got you to start breathing normally again as the shudders in your breath become fewer and further between.
“He doesn’t hate you, y/n” Natasha pipes up from the doorway
You whine into Wanda’s neck, not believing the Russian’s words. You saw him with your own eyes, he was angry and you’re sure he would never forgive you for breaking the planet that he worked so hard on. 
“She’s right, malyshka,” she pulled away as she grabbed your shoulders gently and faced you in front of her to meet her gaze, “I know it was an accident, but I think you need to apologize to Peter for breaking his model” she explained.
“I don’t wanna,” you said shaking your head and moving your gaze downward. You didn’t want to face the boy again. In your mind, he has already written you off and never wants to see you again.
“You’re not sorry for breaking it?” Wanda clarified
You thought about her question for a moment, you were sorry. You felt horrible that you had broken something he worked so hard on, but you also felt embarrassed about the incident, “I am” 
“Then you need to let him know,” she gently expressed, “there is nothing to be embarrassed about, malyshka, mistakes happen”
Her words made sense to you, even though you didn’t want to do it, you knew you had to. Just then, you heard a knock on the door. You look over and standing next to Nat is Peter, asking for entrance. 
“Y/N, I’m sorry for snapping at you, I didn’t mean it” he apologizes as he steps into the office.
You turn on Wanda’s lap to face the door, “Petey,” you start glancing toward the floor, “I-I sorry for bwreaking your homework.” 
“It’s ok, I can fix it. I know it was just an accident, but I still shouldn’t have snapped at you. I didn’t mean it, I love your questions and-” the boy begins to ramble with no sign of stopping before you cut him off, “is okay!” you exclaim as you run up and hug him in hopes that he will stop rambling.

I want you to know I have SO MUCH lore for this oc Ive been cooking up so i'm gonna paste what I was telling my friend on the discord here and if some poor soul reads it all they bear the curse of knowledge and binding
I wanted to make them interesting not just lore wise but gameplay wise so it would make sense and work if they were actually ingame [applause
bold claim to assume my little guy is an employee and not a punishment to people who sit on the terminal the entire fucking game because my little guy is actually a little virus that will fucking kill you if youre on the monitor for TOO FUCKING LONG (/j i'm the person who stays behind a lot) meaning as the one who stays behind its an extra threat thats not just "oh watch for dogs past 6pm and the occasional mask" and it makes it more challenging also they dont kill you instantly the first sign would be like a light breaking in the ship and youd have to fix it meaning it takes your attention away from your crewmates meaning you need to be sparse with your usage of the terminal and the longer you sit on it the more the ship breaks and you need to fix things and if you reach 3 "ship problems" (aka letting it roll over and not fixing it) it's them drawing power from the ship to become physical and once they have enough power they reach out and fucking KILL your ass and theyd function just like a masked in the way they'd linger in the ship and hide until the crew gets back wondering why their guy wasnt responding to them and HOLY SHIT ITS THE COMPUTER GUY!! GOD DAMNIT JERRY WE TOLD YOU TO FIX THOSE DAMN SHIP PROBLEMS AND LIMIT YOUR TERMINAL USAGE THIS IS ALL YOUR FAUL [dies
which means that overusing the terminal not only puts yourself at risk it also puts your teammates at risk
and theres many different problems that can ERUPT
heres like a short list of the randomly selected (only one is picked) tier thingies and what they do!!!!
Tier one - You've been looking at the monitor for 10 minutes. 3 seconds to fix and very minor, but don't let it sit for too long. You can still take off with just a tier one malfunction. This tier will always be announced via audio cue, but it isn't very loud, meaning you need to keep in tune with your surroundings. Charging station shutting off will not be noticed if you're glued to the screen.
-Lights shutting off
-Monitor shutting off
-Charging Station shutting off
Tier two - You've been looking at the monitor for 15 minutes, and you have ignored the Tier one malfunction. 5 seconds to fix. You can still take off at this point. This tier will be announced the same way you're told things in game, that little red box in the bottom right "ERROR: [randomly selected tier two thing] MALFUNCTION." This is the FINAL WARNING you get as the person who stays behind.
-Speaker box malfunction (This counts as noise, the eyeless dogs WILL hear it)
-Door controls will malfunction (That'll really suck if you're being chased by something and you can't close the door)
-Terminal Error (You won't be able to purchase anything, won't be able to transmit messages, won't be able to open doors and shut down turrets) ((keep in mind this only affects the terminal, the monitor isn't affected))
Tier three - You have been looking at the monitor for 30 minutes, and have ignored the Tier one and Two malfunctions. 10 seconds to fix. You will not be able to take off until this is fixed. If you are the one that stayed behind, you will die at this point. Crewmates coming back from scavenging will need to deal with the threat and fix at LEAST the tier three problem before they can take off. You can tell what you need to fix here if you hover over the take off lever, instead of "start ship" it will say "[tier three thing] malfunction".
-Engine Failure (Engine can be found under the ship, you will need to crouch to reach it.)
-Power Failure (Monitor, Terminal, and general power will be completely off. You will need to climb the ladder and go on top of the ship to mess with the funny little satellitte dish)
now you may be wondering HOW THE FUCK WOULD SOMEONE COMING BACK FROM SCAVENGING DEAL WITH MY LITTLE GUY BECAUSE THEY'LL BE IN THE SHIP!! so glad you asked theres actually different ways to deal with them that get more effecient the more progress you have in the game
you can fix the problems the ship is having, which'll cause them to dissapear without a power source to draw from (this is one of the harder ones because theyll still be roaming amuck in the ship BUT its one of the beginner friendly ones, can be done without needing to buy anything from the store)
hitting them with the shovel will stun them for a few seconds, you can use that time to fix the ship problems, so either be strategic with your shovel hits or have a teamate just fucking stunlock them while you fix shit.
And then, finally a use to the zap gun if you're playing solo mode, the zap gun will get rid of them INSTANTLY, BUT at the expense of also overloading your ships systems which'll break 2 more things, but they can only be tier two's or one's. you will never have more than one tier three critical failures, aka no two 10 second fixes, so its a bit easier
then finally, you could buy something from the shop in the ship upgrades category
probably like 600. be called like "Reliable Software" or something which means you will never get a tier three failure, BUT you can still die if you get three malfunctions, it'll just replace what would have been tier three with a tier two, less time fixing, and you can start the ship without fixing it!!! still punishes the person who stays behind, really its just for the people who come back to the ship tier three is the only tier that will prevent you from taking off
this is an AMAZING mechanic that really makes staying behind less boring and less "okay get the scrap.......ok opening the door..........watch out red dot....."
because currently the only real threats you have staying behind are the eyeless dogs which only spawn after 6pm (unless its eclipsed) or the masked which have such a low fucking chance of spawning
which means a solid 50% of the time youre just sitting there staring at a monitor
btw when you fix a tier one malfunction the timer resets and the next one will be tier one again
so as long as you get in a good system of fixing them when they happen, its very easy to avoid
the times to fix the malfunctions get longer as the tiers go up as a way to punish the player like "hey remember how you ignored the lights shutting off guess what fucker now you need to fix that AND this other thing thats 8 seconds at LEAST that you cant help your teammates
also in game you can move the lightswitch so one of the problems you can just move to the front of the monitor
so itll take even less time
it only gets annoying if you ignore it and go "bahh i can fix it in a second...."
i really do love this idea, it doesnt feel too out of place of vanilla
and i think it would be so fun to have to work with because as someone who stays behind a LOT
i get bored
fuckin round on experimentation with no mask spawns and dogs only spawn at 6pm so until then youre just kinda sitting there staring at the screen
and even if tier three happens and your monitor guy dies hope is still not lost!!!!!!!!
perchance you come back to the ship and see the smoke coming from either the engine or the satellite dish
youre like god damnit juan you fucking idiot warned you about those malfunctions
its an early warning so you can be like "ok its gonna be in there. need a game plan."
it wont come out of the ship unless it chases you out
so you COULD fix the tier three first
before even going in
then you can deal with the THING and just take off
then fix the minor ones in orbit
and depending on what you have, dealing with the CREATURE is super easy
also if you have literally ass nothing on you, you can lure it out by getting its attention then just fucking sprinting out of the ship so it follows
it kills you in three hits, so its not just an instant kill
meaning you have some loosey goosey leeway to get creative with how you either fix the problems or take off
really theres a lot of ways to fix it, the best thing is the more stuff you have the more effeciently you can handle it
and even withOUT stuff you can still deal with it, its just harder and has more risk, just like everything else!!!
ok look I know the ingame days are like 11 minutes
okay so since i dont plan on implimenting this ingame as a mod at ALL i can say "ermmm well actshually in my oc lore universe a day is an actual fucking day so thats 24 hours 🤓 " so the tier timing still WORKS
i guess if i were to impliment this in game tier one would be every 5 minutes, you have 60 seconds to fix this before tier two happens (6 minutes), and heaven forbid you dont fix THAT in the next two minutes (8 minutes) or youre FUCKED
this leaves 3 minutes to the surviving crew to DEAL WITH the PROBLEM if tier three happens
but whatever

fun quirks about this design!
-Semi transluscent, has a tv screen effect
-Eye is actually just an enemy dot (themself), if a player approaches them it will show up on their face (hence the 'now monitoring' their face IS the monitor)
-'oxegyn tank' straps show current time and profit quota (they dont have an oxygen tank its what they use as a power storage, if they took it off they'd poof lol)
-Constantly emitting smoke/steam from somewhere, a few wires poking out of places
-also their bestiary entry would just be "entity" if you couldnt tell

Codename: Gordon began development in mid-2003. Starting as a fan-project by Paul "X-Tender" Kamma. During development, the project was noticed by the co-founder of Nuclearvision Entertainment and the company soon began work with Kamma. Codename was originally planned to be released for the Nintendo DS, but upon being noticed by Valve, it was "adopted" by Valve and made an offical part of their Half Life roster.
"Initially, Codename: Gordon was supposed to receive several updates, including a second bonus game which would be unlocked after finishing the game. However, Paul Kamma announced that the update was canceled. The game is no longer available on the Steam store, due to Nuclearvision Entertainment's collapse, which leads to the official company's site' removal. As the access to the site is hardcoded into the game, Valve was forced to remove it from the Steam catalog. However, its depot hasn't been removed from content servers so the game is downloadable using protocol commands or command line parameters." -Half Life wiki

Despite being hidden by steam, the game can still be downloaded for free. Copy " steam://install/92 " into your prefered search engine and there should be a steam popup allowing you to download. There's only six simple levels, and can easily be beat in under 15 minutes.

I've yet again descended into the rabbithole I'd playing all 3 dark souls games and then obsessively watching a ton of videos and reading a ton of Reddit threads about dark souls. And man, DS2 slander really pisses me off. DS2 is my overall favorite dark souls game because it's unique. Even if it has a lot of gameplay flaws, atleast they actually tried something new. DS3 basically just took Bloodborne combat, took all the cool parts like healing and damaging limbs and then put it into dark souls. Giving us infinite stamina and making combat more reaction based turned combat from the slow methodical combat of DS1 and DS2 into a generic hack-n-slash spam R1 and panicroll through 99% of the bosses deal. And I fucking hate that everyone just ate it up and signaled to Fromsoftware to lean into it even more in Elden Ring.
And while DS3 might be a better game in terms of gameplay, if only because it's just a much more modern game and DS2 really did fuck up with ADP and making combat animations too floay, in terms of lore it's literally just repeating the lore about the cycles form DS2 with a bunch of DS1 fanservice, it doesn't actually add anything new. You can play DS1, then DS2 with DLCs and then immediately jump in Painted World and Ringed City DLCs without playing base DS3 and you won't actually miss any major lore, it's insane how little new stuff base DS3 brings to the table. And the way they did references to DS1 is absolutely fanservice, Its actually wild how the B team without Miazaki actually stayed more true to dark souls storytelling then the fucking A team with Miazaki. DS2 actually had a ton of references to DS1 despite all the mouthbreathers on the internet saying DS2 basically only connected to the franchise through its name. It just did those references in the same way DS1 told it's story - through scraps of info hidden in item descriptions and throwaway dialogue lines from npcs. DS3 on the other hand just literally hits you over the head every 15 minutes with blatant DS1 references. For fucks sake, one of the first NPCs you meet in the game is the damn Andre.
Overall, DS3 is only saved by the DLCs. Without them it would have been just rehash of DS2s story with bloodbornified combat and a bunch of DS1 fanservice. Which makes for a great game, don't get me wrong, but it's a shame they didn't do something new and unique for the last game in the series. The DLCs saved the game for me, even if I'm kinda pissed they spent the whole game to retelling the lore from DS2 and then ended the whole series in a damn dlc.

Minor discussion of gameplay mechanics for Tears of the Kingdom, but nothing that you wouldn't learn after 15 minutes in the tutorial area.
So I was pretty displeased when I first heard that TotK was bringing back weapon durability, as I think it was one of the worst things of Breath of the Wild. But being a solid couple dozen hours in, I can say that they put it to much better use in the sequel.
In the first game, a big part of the problem was that good weapons were often rewards for exploring, completing puzzles, defeating camps, etc. They weren't too hard to come by, but neither were they trivial, especially when you were low on weapons and needed to do serious restocking after a boss or lynel fight. And even moderately good weapons felt "too good to use", you wanted to save them in case you needed them later.
In contrast, they've managed to make good weapons extremely abundant in TotK. The reason they couldn't just do that in the first game is because: where are they going to put them? The most common place to put a weapon would be in an enemy's hands, and if all the enemies have high-tier weapons, then they all become a huge struggle to fight. But the "Fuse" ability in TotK circumvents this problem entirely. A lot of pre-release memes were about the idea of fusing a sword to a sword, or stuff like that, but it turns out what we didn't know is there'd be an entire class of materials that work as fusion materials. I'm talking things that aren't weapons on their own, but when fused to a weapon, create a new, much more powerful weapon. Typically, this means monster parts, such as the horns and claws of bokoblins, moblins, hinoxes, lizalfos, and more.
Now you might see how weapons can suddenly be everywhere. The base for the fusion material can be, and often is, literally just a stick. You can equip monsters with sticks and not worry about them being too hard to fight. And then the player, for each enemy defeated, can use their weapon and some part from the defeated monster to create a weapon. Often it ends up being not quite 1-to-1 with enemies to weapon conversion, but it's still a good ratio.
So all the problems of the first game are solved! Weapons are no longer rewards, and losing them no longer sucks -- it was a stick you glued a fang to, you can make more. Restocking is as easy as finding a few sticks or other base weapons, because you can keep fusion materials in your inventory. The player can stay ahead of the enemies in power because only link is gluing monster parts to stuff like this. Honestly, weapon durability makes some sense even, because it stops you from hanging on to a weapon for too long when you should be seeking something higher power. You still do occasionally get a buffed-up version of a weapon that kinda sucks when you lose it, but it's at least a much improved system.

As was promised, it's Eva time.
Starting off broadly, with Artemy and Daniil being narrative foils, two halves of a whole one might say, I think it's fair to assume they would have similar narrative beats. With Artemy's big heart wrenching girl event being self sacrificing for Murky, and with Daniil being, lets just say... not a nice man, I think that's going to result in the event making the player even more like garbage. I have 2 main ideas for what could happen, first one is simpler, and I came up with it before the new teaser and leak so I'll discuss it first. Based mostly on the time travel aspects and systemic focus, I think that with cleaver sequencing and being distracted with quests, IPL could make us think Eva survives into the late game. Then doing a time travel back to do a seemingly net positive systemic action that results in her death and it's going to have to be a "Good ending" OR Eva, but not both situation. With the "You can't save everyone" motif, Artemy can't save Aglaya without betraying the town, I don't think Daniil could save Eva without betraying something VERY important to him.
Now this 2nd one is where the gameplay crackpot shit begins. The screenshot of Daniil's gay little People Journal gives SO much to work with. This'll take a minute to get to Eva so hang on for a sec. First, it has "previous day" "next day" and "all files" With the time travel elements I assume this implies you're filling in people's profiles throughout different pockets in time. Second, day 8 has a ping / update or some sort on Peter. And since it's 00:15 it's likely a condition that develops strike of midnight day 8 (or whatever the time travel equivalent is). Now, P2 has had a habit of rearranging, scrapping and remaking quests out of whole cloth, but keeping narrative threads and fleshing them out. The only thing in that time frame with Peter is likely to be the drama that happens with Maria and Aglaia. Peter was notably was in a bad state during the events of that scuffle, I think that it's possible Peter's "diagnosis" in that notebook, would be one of the mental variety, ie, depression with "Harmful Habits ... Alcohol abuse..." like what was shown in the screenshot. With that update it could result in Daniil doing some sort of "mental health checkup" on his friends. Where he treats them in his harsh and clinical way where he goes through a similar process of diagnosis to figure out what's wrong and how to proceed. The thing is, pathologic loves to put you mental state where you're fighting and you're so focused on people being shitty and horrible and the fighting systemic shit and the plague, and then when you're fully immersed in that mindset it pile drives you with the most painfully human thing you've ever seen. If they do that mental diagnosis, I think Daniil won't see the signs in Eva. Like yeah Peter is a depressed wreck, but everyone can see it. But the whole point of the classic plot with her was that you couldn't really understand what she was saying or going though until it was too late.
It could be both of these, or neither of course. I just figure I could get some hopeful predictions out, there since I know there's a lot of people worried the Bachelor route.
I also think the "Diagnosis" of all the main characters could be good characterization of Daniil, where he views everyone through that medical lens, maybe even noticing small details about people like Artemy's leg injury from his train fight.

i want to defend blue team's strat bc i feel like people are (validly) annoyed by how hard to counter it was (i really think tubbo would have claimed them even if etoiles and roier hadn't glitched bc he was so well positioned [tho we'll never know weep 😭]) but if you're annoyed, congrats! that's how blue team's felt the past 2 days lol while ~technically~ they could counter by defending spawn like etoiles and roier tried to they a) don't have that many players online at that time naturally (etoiles and tubbo having to be on a 4-5am is not healthy even if possible) and b) it's VERY easy—even without doing tubbo's log strat—to have one person run in spawn and claim them all in <2 secs in the last 10 minutes and have the countdown make it impossible to counterclaim. like REALLY easy. and if they've already claimed the contracts, there is literally nothing they can do but watch the other team win which is VERY frustrating. so it's purposefully irritating/dirty strategy that protests the late login being so op. i'm pretty sure tubbo complained on day 2 that the game rewards waiting until the last 15 minutes to claim rewards unless they balanced it better. blue then lost to the same balancing issue two days in a row. and only tomorrow, on day 5 is it getting fixed. that's the slowest any balancing issue has been implemented so far!! (the % changes daily to fit the gameplay, they gave more detail on the points breakdown the day after blue asked, they added the spawn safe zone today WHILE bad was spawnkilling) blue team simply took the late login strat to its logical extreme, and i think that it really highlights why the game is changing to avoid this outcome!! but blue suffered for like 3 days from this unfairness so i, personally, think it's well-deserved for them to use it to their advantage on the last day it's possible!!

so i’ve had a night to sleep on it and a full day of work and i still feel fucking deranged. so. thoughts on the haikyuu movie (*SPOILERS* + long post under the cut):
ok general impressions first—
oh my god it was so good. i’m inconsolable. it was really really good.
i was so strong and normal in the public movie theater until the start of the third set.
at which point i started trembling violently.
which turned to silent crying at the last like five points until the end of the movie.
i’m so sorry to the one other guy sitting in my row.
Anyways. i know we were all apprehensive abt it being a movie but i think it actually worked really well
pacing was good and iirc they managed to fit almost everything in there, which. is very impressive
plus the experience of getting to watch this game all at once in a theater was really fun
HUGEEEE props to the sound editing team oh my god. i could FEEL every spike in my chest and every breath was tangible and the cheering sections were phenomenally mixed and the squeaking of sneakers on the floor throughout….and then the CRAZY moments of pure silence…….man.
AND THE SOUNDTRACK. THE MUSIC. THE MUSICCCCCCC. there is one thing haikyuu will never do and that is miss with the music. oh my god even just the OPENING had me shaking. the music added SO MUCH and was SO well done.
the animation in general was REALLY good. especially that final point of the game which i will mention more later bc man. god. the animation was REALLY GOOD.
the characters were all so well done. like yeah ofc but. they were so good.
i walked in with an already deep love for nekoma and i walked out feeling like my heart had burst with how much love i have for them
kuroo and kenma in particular were REALLY good. there was a good amnt of childhood kuroken and when i tell you i was sobbing for half of it…
also very good was tsukishima!! he’s not one of my faves usually but he had me silently screaming in the movie theater during this game
and OF COURSE hinata. how could i not mention him. he was done so well. i watched it dubbed and the voice acting was VERY good.
no fukurodani game so. Sad. but also i do think if they had put that in there it would have broken the tension in a bad way, so i’m not actually upset about it. praying for an ova or smth
overall good blend of memory/flashback and realtime gameplay
re: flashbacks--a lot of them were to childhood kuroken and a lot of them were also just to training camps and scenes we've seen before but in a different pov....biting down on things rn
re: gameplay--saw some review that was like "gah they expect you to care about the characters/teams already and dont tell you who to root for" bitch YEAH and that's the POINT ! so yeah. if you care about the characters already and love both teams. *chef's kiss*
besides that they did NOT pull ANY punches. the game is REAL from the FIRST whistle, maybe only 10-15 minutes in
which like. that was the only way to do it. and they did not fucking hesitate
some stand out moments for me, in no particular order—

oh my god the last point was done BEAUTIFULLY. it’s already such an insane way to end the game and i swear the movie was just as insane.
they did the last few minutes of the game through kenma’s eyes, so you’re seeing his pov of the court and the ball, and that glimpse of the practice match moment, until the ball slips and it cuts to his eyes. oh my god. i went crazy i went crazy i am STILL going CRAZY.
kenma falling down and “that was fun” going into kuroo’s laugh……………changed LIVES !!!!!!
similarly, kenma’s last speech of the game oh my god oh my god oh my god
we KNEW it was one of my favorite speeches in any manga ever but they genuinely did it justice. the cuts between shots of the court and kuroo inviting kenma to play volleyball and kenma following him out the door and leaving behind a video game controller and a volleyball magazine……what if i went crazy forever and ever and ever !!!!!!!!
ALL of the childhood kuroken moments…..literally feeling deranged about them
TSUKISHIMA SOMETIMES ITS ACTUALLY FUN !!!!!!
everything about tsukishima and kuroo’s banter across the net was incredible

all of the little glimpses and montages they had to training camps and practices outside of actually playing, when they were just hanging out……sir im crying !!!!
they all reminded me a lot of the special one shot where kai has that moment of reflection on his volleyball career but all that came to mind were the breaks where he was hanging out with his friends…..i’m gonna cry thinking abt it.

OOOOOOH. when kenma has his panic moment of oh what do i do and then kuroo comes up and it flashes between that spike and them learning to spike together as kids……what if i went ballistic right fucking now
the “we are each other’s teacher” moment jesus fucking christ. they didn’t say that line but. you’ll know it’s that scene when it happens. i think it broke something inside me.

speaking of, they wove the foreshadowing w the sweat on the court and the ball etc into the game really seamlessly and aghadlgkjahg;ajdgfkal. god. ok. this is fine.
anyways. the animation in that sequence goes SO HARD. the animation overall goes so hard. im in hysterics.
ok this got long but there's DEFINITELY more things that im missing...idk these are just my first thoughts. i want to see it again. i NEEEEED to see it again. oh my god i feel crazy. i love haikyuu so much. i love it so much. like so much. did you know i love haikyuu.

Being a Sims player is spending an inordinate amount of time right after you wake up planning the exact timeline of how two of your Sims are going to move in together and where they’ll live, accounting for their birthdays and your strict rotational schedule. Without ever opening your game.
Literally been brainstorming this for probably the past 30 minutes.
Edited to add a cut with more rambles because I think I finally decided...
OK so... Jamie and Hannah are two of the cutest Sims ever, and they both are Family Sims so I just know it’s gonna happen for them. The problem is, their ages are just eeeever so slightly out of sync.
Jamie’s household comes up first in the rotation, so he’s already been played through in round 15 and is still a teen. Hannah’s household is somewhere in the middle of the rotation, and she’s aged up to an adult in that round already. So they’ll finish round 15 in different life stages, Jamie’s still a teen so I can’t just move him in with Hannah on the last evening of her round. (I mean I could but I feel that would be odd? For him to move in but still have one day being a teen while she’s an adult now?) (the ultimate plan is he moves in with her and they inherit her family home, living multi-generationally in the meantime)
So what I’m thinking is... when round 16 (next round) starts, I’ll play Jamie’s family and let him age up the first evening, then move him out to the bin. Then I’ll finish his family’s round without him (he’s off travelling and finding himself or something). Then when I get to Hannah’s round, I’ll play them one day so the days/ages sync, then move Jamie in. So he plays his final four days of the round in that household, rather than the original, he and Hannah are both adults. and they can start their life together.
The only alternative is basically playing them both right through round 16 in their own households, moving Jamie in with Hannah on the last night of round 16, then they’re both already 4-5 days into adulthood and can’t really get their lives started together until round 17. And I’m impatient with them lol.
Sometimes it’s a mental workout trying to make sure that the rotational gameplay is kept to - everyone lives exactly five days per rotation, no more, no less!

Okay, so! Few days late to this - as in, nearly a week late - but in all fairness, absolutely NO ONE was posting about this on the Shantae tag, so I feel like I can be excused. Anyway, for those of you who don't know, on April 5th, WayForward actually released about 15+ minutes of gameplay footage for Risky Revolution, which you can watch here!

Now, we don't really get any story details beyond what we already know, very specifically to avoid big spoilers, but there are a few interesting details I'd like to note (it'll be under a read more for anyone who wants to go into Shantae Advance completely blind)
Firstly, and perhaps most exciting to me, we are in fact getting unique bosses! This is evident by the sign that's read in front of the first dungeon, located in Orc Orchard:

Now, we don't know ANYTHING about these bosses, other than that they've kidnapped Mimic's fellow Relic Hunters and one of them is named MishMash, but there is a trailer at the end of the video, and there we do get some footage of what I suspect to be some of the bosses

Faaaaaairly certain the pink one is MishMash; the arena matches the dungeon they're in, so...yeah. Blue one is a complete unknown but may I just say they are KILLING it out there. You go you weird little freak
Anyway! Moving on from that little tidbit, some other things to note:
Rotty is actually part of the main group from the start!

Which is very nice and all for her, but considering that this is all, canonically, the second game in the series...dramatic irony is rearing its head right now, ESPECIALLY with Sky, so I can't help but look at this and go "uh oh."
Also, Rotty is the shopkeeper. And I would like to direct all the Shantops shippers directly to the exact pose Rotty goes into while you look through the shop

She is down so fucking bad it's unbelievable. My god. Rotty Shantae is busy looking for potions to survive her next fight she's not going to notice you sitting flirtatiously like that especially when you barely know each other at this point. Girl
And for one final note, we've also gotten a look at the Crab form for this game! Which is a completely different design compared to what Half-Genie Hero gave us

Mini-Review: Polygon Unraveled
A video series that explores the dangers of taking video game lore and logic too seriously.
Or as others online put it:
A series of viral videos for the gaming website Polygon in which he slowly goes insane while talking about video games.
Brian David Gilbert tries to unravel game lore without losing his grip on reality.

Several years ago, this guy who somehow managed to exude cryptid vibes despite appearing to be the walking embodiment of an excel spreadsheet kept coming across my dash. I gleaned enough info to determine he was a YouTuber and promptly scrolled on.

A couple years later...I'll be honest, I have no idea how I actually came to watch any of this. At some point, someone on tumblr tricked me into watching a completely different channel, which showed me that there is, in fact, entertaining content on YT despite a preponderance of talking heads and intensely parasocial fandoms, and the Almighty Algorithm recommended me a a video with a title I couldn't ignore, probably The Perfect PokéRap.

Host Brian David Gilbert is to all appearances an unassuming besuited nerd with high charisma and an even higher ability to subject himself to mental torments in the form of reading in real life all 333 books in the video game Skyrim, calculating how much money in OSHA fines Mario would owe, and interviewing his mother as part of a mathematical process to determine the Game of the Year...during which she kindly says, "This is a lot of research into things that really have very little meaning."

"A lot of research into things that really have very little meaning" would be a great and accurate tagline. Unraveled tricks you into thinking it's about video game-associated nerdery, but actually refers to Gilbert's mental state.

At any rate, it's easy to see why this garnered attention: it's funny and full of the specific pedantry that fandoms enjoy, taking canon details seriously to their ridiculous conclusions.
The subject is video games, but I haven't play the majority of titles/series/franchises featured and enjoyed it all, so it should be accessible and enjoyable to people who similarly haven't. Clips and brief descriptions of games/gameplay/stories are included when necessary, which for me gave all the context I needed.

Because listen: you do not need to be familiar with any Legend of Zelda games to enjoy the hilarity of Gilbert and a non-gamer coworker trying to recreate 78 recipes from Breath of the Wild using only ingredients listed in the game (that is: very few ingredients). I don't need to know anything about Hideo Kojima or the games he creates (and to this day, I do not) to understand the humor of his character names, because Gilbert explains that particular brand of peculiarity in the course of generating an 11-page form that will help him generate his own similarly-kooky names. There are a minimum of three different song/musical interludes throughout this series that are enjoyable and impressive.

Final comments: Highly recommend. It's accessible and fun even with a very small amount of video game knowledge (the small amount I have via pop culture osmosis) and witty; Gilbert has a talent for spouting great one-liners that contribute to the preponderance of gifs on this website.

Where to watch (USA, as of May 2024): A playlist (X) on Polygon's (@Polygon) Youtube channel contains all episodes. Polygon's channel contains literally thousands of other videos, so I recommend using the playlist regardless of whether you watch them all or just a few.
Start watching with: My best recommendation is starting from the beginning using the playlist, with Solving the Zelda Timeline in 15 Minutes, because individual videos are great but it's also fun to watch Gilbert increasingly, well, unravel. But if you want a few videos to sample, I'd start with any of these:

Status/Frequency: There are 28 videos total, most of which are 15-20 minutes long with only a handful of outliers. The series was released from 2018 to the end of 2020, when he left the company to pursue other projects.
