In this essay, i shall tell you all how The archer by taylor swift is dnb coded. Anything that reminds of dream will be green, techno’s will be pink, and purple means the lyrics descripe both of them.

Both dream and techno have been haunted by people, been the casted out, the “not trusted under any circumstances” which made them bond with each other stronger, and understand each other’s feelings as they both have been through the same trauma.

But also, Everyone would want dream or techno to be their ally, but never a friend, never someone they talk to about everything, tell them their hopes and worries, because if they told a new friend of what they have been through, they would leave.

Also, i have a headcanon that dream hates seeing his face after the prison. His face is just filled with scars, which made his self-esteem low, so low he’d hide his face at the beginning from techno, turn around to the other side so techno wouldn’t pity him (even though techno has never pitied him, he sees him as his equal even at his worst).

While they progress into their relationship, Techno and dream slowly realize that they have never met someone who could understand them so effortlessly like each other, They finally found each other, across all the possible timelines and all the possible universes.

They always had a hunch that what they have is fated, like they were meant to be able to see through the other, know the other like the balms of their hands.

Like soulmates.

And finally, with all the scars and pain dream had, he knows nothing will get him back to what he was before, the dream that started the server as a place for him and his friends to hang out, the same friends who later turned into his enemies. Also the same with Techno, back in Pogtopia, he thought the resistance were his friends, but then he found it he was only a tool they were planning to get rid off after they win, hence the “all of my enemies started out as friends” line.

Later, techno and dream’s unbreakable trust for each other is what made them hold onto each other, more than what expected, as they slowly turn into lovers.

How do you interpret The Archer’s first verse?

Combat I’m ready for combat

I say I don’t want that but what if I do?

Cause cruelty wins in the movies

I’ve got a hundred thrown out speeches I almost said to you

imo she is admitting that - despite wanting a loving relationship that is tender and trusting - her actions and instincts don't support that. she is describing how her instinct is to be on the defensive all the time: lash out to protect herself, even start conflict, because it's how she feels safe. and conflict in relationships might be romantic or move the plot along in a film, and drama in general can feel like passion, but she is realizing that irl conflict and drama can destroy you and your relationships.

some additional thoughts that add context to my understanding of this verse (archer lyrics in bold):

"i jump from the train, i ride off alone" and "this is how the world works, you gotta leave before you get left" -> "help me hold onto you!" - her defense mechanism is to cut and run out of fear she'll be hurt by the other person, and she's begging for help to avoid this.

imo this means literally leaving and cutting people out ("i packed my bags, left cornelia street before you even knew i was gone" or "there's a justice system inside your head, for names you'll never speak again, and you make your ruthless rulings") but could also mean figuratively isolating or treating someone poorly to push them away ("my words shoot to kill when i'm mad, i have a lot of regrets about that" and "i lived like an island, punished you with silence")

"i search for your dark side" - her inner voice is telling her that everyone will betray her (which we see illustrated in the anti-hero mv, where her inner destructive self literally teachers her "EVERYONE WILL BETRAY YOU.") she laments that she makes bad choices, trusting people who don't have her best interests in mind ("all of my enemies started out friends") but she also loathes herself for trusting them in the first place ("and i know i make the same mistakes every time, bridges burn, i never learn") - and maybe this is a form of self-sabotage. she loves to "give people what they want" but it becomes a form of self-sacrifice ("who could ever leave me, darling, but who could stay?")

"i've been the archer, i've been the prey" - she's been hurt by cruelty, but she's also been cruel to others. and this is why so much of her pasts haunts her ("i pace like a ghost, the room is on fire, invisible smoke" and "when my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people i've ghosted stand there in the room.") she has so much regret over the mistakes she's made, her own flaws, the people she's hurt. she wants love, but it's a cycle: who could ever hurt her when she's so great, but who could stay when she's so cruel? she's so tired, "i never grow up, it's getting so old"... she wants to escape it.

The Archer - nancy again. “i’m ready for combat” always on edge after what happened with barb, always ready for the upside down to come back. “i’ve got a hundred thrown out speeches i almost said to you” we see her struggling wanting to open up in season 2, with her guilt with steve and letting barbs parents know what happened. “i ride off alone” becoming a bit of a loner and not making new friends after barb. “who could ever leave me darling? but who could stay?” her and steve breaking up, having issues with jonathan now. “all of my hero’s die all alone” barb died alone. she’s watching her mom raise them pretty much alone, with little to no help from her dad. “all of my enemies started out friends” her vecna traumas were her friends and peers. “they see right through me. can you see right through me?” having a strong shield but being scared and broken under it all

Songs I relate to Adam Banks

A while back I mused to Kay about making a list of songs that make me think of Adam/Banksway. Well, here it is. I have also included the lyrics I think describe him the most.

By Your Side by Tenth Avenue North: This song makes me think of Banksway in particular. The lyric that screams Adam to me is "Why are you trying to earn grace?" It makes me think of Adam because I feel like he pushes himself so much. However, those who love him don't need him to try to earn their love. He already has it.

Falling by The Great Palumbo: This song is about being afraid of being yourself. This strikes me as very Adam. He almost seems like the type of person who molds himself to others. Therefore he hides himself. The whole song gives me Adam vibes. However, the chorus makes me think of D2 in particular. "I said I was fine. So I'm sorry I lied." In D2 he put up a front so he wouldn't get benched, nuff said.

Mirrorball by Taylor Swift: This was the first song I heard that gave me Adam vibes. The verse that describes him to me is "I'm a mirrorball. I can change everything about me to fit in." Adam seems to try to not ruffle too many feathers. So, he tries to fit in even if he isn't being himself.

Flaws by Bastille: This song gives me Adam talking to Charlie. One particular lyric struck me right away as them. "You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve. And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground" Charlie is very open, Adam is not.

You are Enough By Sleeping at Last: This strikes me as someone talking to Adam. The boy tries so hard to prove himself. I don't really have a particular song but this whole song gives me the vibe of someone trying to comfort Adam.

King By Lauren Aquilina: I heard this song the first time in therapy when I was dealing with perfectionism. The lyric that makes me think of Adam is "You don't get what all this is about. You're too wrapped up in your self-doubt" Adam is sure about hockey, but not a lot else. Like we see in the D2 book he wants to give up after being told he might be a professional hockey player. That's why I feel like that lyric fits.

The Archer by Taylor Swift: This song broke me the first time I heard it. I feel like the whole song is pretty Adam vibes. However, the part I relate to him the most is "All the king's horses, all the king's men Couldn't put me together again. 'Cause all of my enemies started out friends" and "They see right through me." Again I feel this whole song is Adam vibes.

I'm starting with Harry because I have Thoughts about this song choice.

Harry James Potter IS "The Archer" from Lover. Taylor basically wrote it about him. And here's why.

Just LOOK at these lyrics (I've bolded the parts that I think are especially important):

(I see that as like, literal and metaphorical combat, deciding whether or not he wants to be an auror. But also combat in terms of like, fighting for happiness and love.)

(That line reads to me like 'I'm the Chosen One, so to the outside observer it would seem foolish to leave me, but I've got so much baggage, who could deal with it?')

the lyric we should be paying more attention to: "I'm ready for combat, I say I don't want that but what if I do?" and especially "help me hold onto you"

I feel like Swifties love to cast themselves as the "you" in "you could stay"...and like it can be about the loyalty of fans but it's a far more interesting song if you read it as about...you know...an interpersonal relationship. because the most important line in the song is "help me hold onto you": it's Taylor admitting that she's been saying for years that all anyone ever had to do was stay, but that actually she needs help to stay, herself. that combat comes naturally but this sticking-it-out thing requires grace.

"All Too Well (10 minute version)"

the Swiftie lyric: "and I was never good at telling jokes, but the punch line goes, I get older but your lovers stay my age"

the lyric we should be paying more attention to: "any time now, he's gonna say it's love, you never called it what it was" and "you kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath" and "just between us did the love affair maim you too?" and "cause in this city's barren cold, I still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell, I remember it all too well"

TO BE FAIR to the Swifties, ATW10 received sooo much attention that we've basically given each lyric its due. but the discussion tends to be about how much more angry the long version is, when the glory of the ten minute version is that there is both more vitriol and more love - and more vitriol BECAUSE there is more love. his misdeeds stand out because they stand out against the background of the good thing he ruined. and so I think it's important that what was an accusation in the original - "you were there, you remember" - now becomes a very personal question: "just between us, do you remember?"

Man something I love about well written music is how the interpretation of lyrics. Like The Archer by Taylor Swift is pretty intended to be about Taylor wanting her lover to stay with her, but it’s also interested to read the lyrics through the lens of someone who is stuck with someone they don’t actually want to stay. I’m not sure it works perfectly, but “Cause all of my enemies started out friends” just hits different when you’re thinking about this friend who’s really into you and you just aren’t into them and what that’s gonna do to your friendship with them

the archer is soooo rikki chadwickcore. i know taylor personally she told me herself

'combat, i'm ready for combat' girlie views everything in her life as a fight, first and foremost she is combative, sardonic, witty, always ready for an argument, always prepared to fight

'easy they come, easy they go / i jump from the train, i ride off alone / i never grew up, it's getting so old / help me hold onto you' was truly written for rikki because it's at least semi-canon that she's moved around from place to place her whole life, never putting down roots, never staying long enough to form real connections. loneliness and isolation are such core parts of her character pre-transformation. in that sense her development is stunted, she never got to have normal experiences like staying in one place and making friends that last. in a sense it's as if she never got the chance to truly grow up

'i've been the archer / i've been the prey / who could ever leave me, darling? / but who could stay' this one is a little more tricky because rikki is usually the one to leave first. however none of her past connections ever seem to last beyond a perfunctory text here and there before communication dies, and she is alone again. in a way she is constantly being left behind. no one ever seems to stay

'dark side, i search for your dark side / but what if i'm alright, right, right, right here? / and i cut off my nose just to spite my face / then i hate my reflection for years and years' this can be read in a few different ways, her pulling away from the girls in 1x18 'bad moon rising' even though she is safe with them, or perhaps initially resisting her connection with zane or ending things with him precisely because she cares for him and doesn't want to get hurt

'all the king's horses, all the king's men / couldn't put me together again / 'cause all of my enemies started out friends / help me hold onto you' in spite of her past trauma she wants to hold onto the people she loves. she is doing everything to be strong and hold it together, but everyone she has ever loved before she has had to leave, and eventually they leave her, too. pain

'you could stay / combat, i'm ready for combat' she is, slowly, starting to accept the love of the people around her. she isn’t insisting that they will stay but is open to the possibility and allowing them to make that choice, allowing herself to be vulnerable enough to let them hurt her. this time the 'combat' line takes on a new meaning: she isn't preparing to fight to keep people away, but to fight for the people that she cares for, and that care for her.
