Bananas In Adventure Time
Tumblr media
Many of you might remember the endless use of bananas in the episode “Return to the Nightosphere” and “Daddy’s Little Monster.” This is my favorite joke in the show because it is just a nice nod to the history of comedy.
In the beginning of the episode the boys wake up in a jail cell in the Nightosphere, surrounded by bananas. When approaching a guard Jake asks what’s up with all the bananas- the guard responds in disgust. Every time Jake asks about the banana the Nightosphere demons are grossed out by him.
Tumblr media
Later in the episode it’s shown that the bananas are used as “weird punishment” on the demons. The punishments include endlessly barfing bananas and having bananas seemingly defecated out of their ears.
Tumblr media
I think this is a nod towards the banana peel slip gag which (maybe) was meant to be a “polite” way to represent slipping on animal droppings. So, yeah... the bananas are poop.
I love the way that bananas are used in this show in general. There’s many gags and nods towards using bananas as funny little props. Finn even does the classic banana gag himself in “Blenanas”
Tumblr media
Idk maybe there wasn’t any thought put into it- maybe it was just to be funny but it’s still interesting to think about.

More Paintbrushes
Went ahead and did some more paintbrush designs, each based off a different franchise lol. The neopets hyperfixation is strong.

I think she’s a romantic. I know this scene seems like a huge counterpoint to that lolll but really! I think she’s a romantic who’s also very pragmatic and private about her feelings and personal life, and who’s not very good at romance lmao. She loves ceremony. Like 75% of her career is essentially “making the toys kiss” in both a metaphorical and an almost-literal sense. Getting Hambo back was a grand romantic gesture!! She’s always embarrassed by it / shy about it when it’s personal but who isn’t lol

Finn has used many swords. Each unique in origin and power. Some are epic, some are bland.
Regal Sword: Just a regular sword Finn used after buying it before sneaking off into a dungeon. The gray bulb was originally red until his mom ate the color.
Ice Sword: A Christmas present from Grandpa Simon. Ice King made it, adding a defending spell from the crown. This sword was unfortunately destroyed by Scorcher after accidently hiring him and the spell flew back into the crown. So, Finn went back to using the Regal Sword before getting the next one.
Abadeer Demon Sword: Finn gets it during the second time meeting Grandfather Hunson. (The first time, Hunson tried to bond with him by trying to suck all the souls in Ooo) Hunson gives it to the little "prince" before making the offer to Marcy in taking over the Nightosphere. Events go down normally, even Finn wearing the amulet. So, Finn gets a new sword and trauma that day. This dark blade is infused with Hunson's magic, giving it power to suck up souls, chop ghosts and overpower even the strongest of foes. Marceline, however, destroys this one after finding out that the Demon Sword was corrupting her son to do evil, finding out Finn's been sneaking out dungeon crawling even before he got the sword. Though the effect was taking way slower than Hunson expected for some reason. (*cough* Comet *cough*)
Candy Cane Sword: With the Evil Sword Curse still lingering on Finn, Marceline banned her son from going into dungeons. He went to the Candy Kingdom to look for any thrill, but not too extreme as he's still a good-hearted hero. He went to Princess Bubblegum to see if there's anything he could do. As Hero of Ooo, she saw an opportunity and gave him a job as a knight, giving him a new sword. Though he had a breakdown and quits after enduring trauma from the second zombie incident, but he still kept the sword.
Celestial Light: Seeing the curse becoming worse for Finn, Marcy feared she was going to lose her son like she lost her father-figure. She looked through the Enchiridion and the library to find at least something to help him, even a little. (Now, I didn't think of a full story here, but they end up in another dimension, earns the orb and it lifts his curse) Made of purifying light, Finn could shape it into any tool he willed it to with a proud shout of its name. Celestial Light was destroyed when it stabbed into the Lich's heart, erasing him and the blade from existence.
Biotech Sword: Finn gets this sword from when he, his mom and BMO somehow ended up in space... on the Drift. At first look, it's a cool looking sword, but it can adjust its effectiveness from able to block attacks to slicing anything like hot butter. It can also create arcs of energy with every slash Finn makes in close combat or ranged and release shockwaves with every hit if he wants to. If the sword has been knocked away or just out of reach in general, it will fly back to him with just a thought.
Soul Sword: Created by Peppermint Bulter before the Lich War, a soul trapper. Finn used it on the PepperLich to end to war and dumped it in the same volcano where Magic Man threw Patience St Pim after she used him as an elemental spell battery, but not before turning her into an avocado.
Biotech Arm Sword: Shortly after losing his arm, the Biotech Sword merged with the severed appendage and immediately reattached itself onto him, giving him a hard light blade with the same features as before. At one point after, he discovered it could customize its appearance, giving himself claws.
There was that one sword he made with the Sister of Flame (Flame Princess), but he never used it and gave it to her after she overthrew her father.
And that's all the sword MMAU Finn has used.

If Simon had the Nightosphere Amulet thrown in his direction
I feel like he'd either have Ice King's giddiness but actually be dangerous
or
be someone stuck in the Apocalypse, still thinking they have to protect a little girl. Also dangerous but more in a trapped predator way

It came from the Nightosphere.
This episode being the opener of season 2, nearly coming off the tails of Henchman, really cements the direction Marcy's character ends up taking. Admittedly, Eviction already had a few bits that'd get built upon— namely the being a thousand years old and losing sight of one's moral code; but it's mostly a really mean-spirited introduction. Henchman really picks up the slack and introduces Marcy as a genuine friend to Finn and cements core aspects to her character. She's an edgelord that likes looking cool, and while she's not necessarily evil or malicious, she still has a genuine mean streak to her due to her immaturity (which Heat Signature elaborates upon nicely).
Similarly, It came from the Nightosphere introduces an even bigger and even more overwhelming facet to her character— that is, under her cool act lies a really troubled girl with lots of emotional baggage (understatement of the millennium).
In typical Adventure Time fashion, the way it's presented is cheeky and ironic. The fries song is silly out of context by itself, but the sequence of Finn's beat boxing deflating into a troubled sigh is a great gag to kickstart the episode. The idea that seemingly the central conflict of the song is something as silly as fries getting eaten being contrasted to bombs such as "Daddy, do you even love me? 'Cause I wouldn't know it" is pretty funny on its own, but the fact the first thing Hunson does upon arriving to Ooo is to try to suck Finn's soul, to which Marceline dryly remarks he always does things like that pushes the joke further. He tries to kill her friends constantly, but she cries over the fries. I didn't remember the comedic genius behind the Fries song.
The episode unfolds in a similar comedic fashion. While Finn is horrified over the evil he has unleashed on Ooo and wants to stop him, Marceline remains brattily self-centered, only concerned about her bass or her longing for an actual loving relationship with her father. "I just want my dad to care about me" It's an extremely funny non sequitur.
While Hunson's "evil worldview" and Marceline's inability to be upfront with her emotions are the purported tension between them, I actually appreciate the fact it undercuts the "touching" heart-to-heart of Hunson's "But I do love you!" since it leaves more room to explore the storyline (and I hate Hunson's neglectful ass lol). Furthermore, it strikes as being a genuinely more grounded and emotionally complicated route to have Marceline acknowledge his love as True but still finding having to confront him exhausting and still having lingering resentments.
Overall, a really solid early episode establishing Marceline's character while still being cheeky and refusing to present or resolve the conflict straightforwardly, which would come to be one of AT's bigger writing strengths over time.
