Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #06

I’m doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc.

Here are the non-analysis meow meow panels (only 2 today, sorry 😔)

I really love the "train conductor/bus driver/etc puts themself in danger to protect the passengers" trope- NOOOOOOOOOO COOL CONDUCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Small correction: These first onomatopoea are actually...flesh sounds...... And I wasn't really thinking about corrections for this one, more just for nuance, but Neon says something like "it's unfortunate, but..." in this line.

A small difference here: in my version it's actually CO2, not oxygen that's being supplied to the Heat Plant. However, considering that O2 is a fuel for combustion and CO2 is a byproduct, it may be an error on Nightow's part.

This is one of the first indications of who Kaito actually is. He knows all of this off the top of his head, which catches the Captain by surprise.

It also provides information about Plants. This could either mean that all Plants require some kind of fuel, or that the Plants can utilize those resources in some other way to help the Sandsteamer.

Get graphited idiot.

We also get to see more of Kaito's attachment to this Sandsteamer.

Here, the original line is more like "Why would Brilliant Dynamites Neon have to listen to you when this treasure—the prey I've been hunting—is right in front of me!?"

This is where I notice that Neon has a sort of obsession with "beauty," not just in the regular sense but also in his own way. He obviously values visuals—his over-the-top fashion and desire to go out with a bang—but to him, it's also a question of dignity. (this will be on the exam yall)

Even the gang member is getting worried about what Neon might do to Kaito... And here's where we find out why Kaito knows so much and wants to protect the Sandsteamer!

Notes on the original phrasing of this line, since I saw a few posts comparing the Dark Horse and Overhaul versions.

The Japanese line is「パッと散りな　小僧」パッ(pa') is an onomatopoea for "pop," "poof," or a release (e.g. letting go of an object). 散る(chiru, used here in command form) means "scatter," most commonly associated with falling cherry blossom petals. From that, it's also a euphemism for dying. i can go on for another paragraph on the association of cherry blossoms with Japanese views on life/death but you can figure that out. or google it idk

I think this line is another excellent representation of Neon's values on beauty and death.

I love this page so much!! The flow comes to a complete stop, and the tension that has been building throughout the last few pages is at its peak here. The composition is also excellent. The art is symmetrical, and Neon's giant outfit follows the lines leading from the bottom corners of the page up to Vash's gun, where they intersect right in the middle. I JUST LOVE THESE KINDS OF COMPOSITIONS SO MUCH.....

It took a while to figure out what happened here, but I think Vash either sensed danger or actually dodged a bullet, and chose to jump back out. Love the way he's firmly holding Kaito's overalls while Kaito doesn't understand anything that's going on lol

The silly goofies... theyre screaming crying shitting themselves out there....

It's a bit hard to see, but Kaito is screaming "AAAHHH PULL ME UPPP" in the middle panel.

This exchange after the two get to safety is also so silly... There's a missing "whrrrr drill drill" SFX for Vash's drill hand (?). I saw a photo of the Dark Horse version which was missing it in the same way, with the leftover ン on Vash's cheek.

I forgot to highlight it, but this note pertains to Vash's second speech bubble about death and destruction. The Japanese version of the line is something like "I swear!! I have at least 2 digits' worth of death-gods(死神) or poverty-gods(貧乏神) haunting me!!" Death-gods/shinigami are already well-known in the West so I won't explain that here. The second one, poverty-god/binbōgami, is a similar kind of thing, except it brings poverty to whoever it clings onto (instead of death). Fun fact: Binbōgami are said to like yakimiso (grilled miso paste).

VASH'S SOUPY BRAIN!!! The mystery has been solved!!!

But first, in order... Vash's first line is more like "We can't be worrying about all this right now." It could keep the original phrasing, but the main idea is to change "me" to "us."

The next (most important) line is actually "We gotta save brainpower [for the matter at hand]." The confusion lies in the word 脳みそ, which literally translates to "brain miso," but is actually the word for brain tissue, and thus brainpower. It has nothing to do with miso soup! The origin I wrote in the middle-left of the image is...dubious.... I told my mom about this just now, and she mentioned that it might be called that because みそ(miso) also means the center or key aspect of something. Weblio also says it signifies innards (like from crab or shrimp), similar to what I wrote in the annotation at first. I'll fix it in the document later

Also, I would phrase the last line as "I mean, we're gonna stop this ship, right!?"

Kaito's skills are actually insane. What do you mean you just copied the entire blueprint... Mistranslation: The respect is directed towards his dad, so it should be "You must really look up to your dad."

I didn't know his name was spelled Kaite in this version. My Japanese version copy has that bottom part in a regular speech bubble, and with the font for the boxes. It's most likely just a version-exclusive error. He also says that his dad "found" the ship, but I'm not sure if that's another error or not since this translation makes more sense.

This line is phrased more like "Just for a little bit of cash, I'm now taking advantage of you for a deal with a crook."

I really loved the execution of this scene in the '98 anime. get hammered into the ground boy The final line is from Kaito, not Vash, and should be "...Yeah!!"

And that’s it for Chapter #06! Sorry for the wait, I couldn't work on this as much as I'd liked because of the smoke and rainstorm, combined with weekend responsibilities. Feeling better now though 💪 As always, the Japanese annotations are in the reblogs.

Dabi x reader (with minor x bakugou)

Prompt: During the USJ incident the villains kidnapped you. UA has been on high alert after that incident, metal detectors at gates, students having to check in during breaks on campus, and more. You have been at the villain bar ever since, quirkless thanks to All For One, and with no memory of UA or your life before it. When Dabi started hanging around the bar, he became attached to you, playfully teasing you for being forgetful. Things fall apart when Bakugou is captured during the summer camp training and he gets to see you, his stolen s/o again.

-When you woke up in a wood panel room with no memory you panic and look for a way out

-The door was unlocked so you opened it, found an empty hallway with the staircase at the end, so you go down it

-Its only kurogiri there at the bar, you look towards the door and bolt for it

-Kurogiri terrified you at first

-Kurogiri just teleports you upstairs

-It repeats for about three more times before you come down and hug the wall asking who he is

-“Kurogiri.” he makes a glass of apple juice and puts it on the bar counter. You walk over and take it

-“Are you hungry?” “yeah”

-He starts asking about you, gauging to see what you remember

-He makes you food and keeps talking to you

-He tells you you can’t go outside yet

-You ask him if he knows why you have amnesia and he says you had a mental break of sorts

-Your family left you in their care with no phone number

-Shigaraki comes in, he’s very demanding and childish

-You all get to know each other, you play minecraft with shigaraki, specifically those hunger games ones

-He gets better, calms down and learns how to be more strategic

-You never meet all for one, and shigaraki and kurogiri are careful never to mention him around you

-Enter: dabi

-Shigaraki HATES him lmao. He hates how Cool and Chill he is

-So he saddles dabi with babysitting you, and he lets dabi take you outside

-Dabi keeps a hand on your wrist the whole time, he never lets you out of his sight and he doesn’t let you let go

-You two had never talked outside of introducing yourselves

-You happily thread your hand through his and tug him through the shopping district

-You’re constantly talking to him and wanting to explore so he goes along with it, sticking to the busier parts of the shopping districts to help blend in

-He has on glasses, a beanie, and a face mask so no one can see him

-There are cameras that identify you in the district so UA is alerted. The heroes immediately head out to get you back, the local police are alerted

-Dabi notices that there are more police around, he doesn’t even know what you’re doing at the villain hideout all the time. All he knows is you have amnesia and that you’re quirkless. He immediately withdraws his hand from yours and slings it across your shoulders. He leads you into a shop, “follow my lead, doll.”

-He picks out a dark pair of sunglasses for you, sloppily restyling your hair and picking out a big jacket and a new outfit for you

-He rips the tags off them and says to change and wait outside the dressing rooms. He comes back to get you, giving you a face mask too

-There are police and heroes there in the whole area. Dabi tightens his arm around your shoulder and walks faster. He’s calling kurogiri trying to coordinate a way out.

-The police and heroes are going through the crowd picking certain people removing glasses and masks.

-The whole area is closed off, there is no way to a private spot for kurogiri to open a portal

-Dabi calls someone else

-And then someone behind you says excuse me

-Dabi’s fingers loosen off your shoulder and his palm starts to hover so he can move his hand if needed

-He slowly turns the both of you around

-Its a kid

-‘You guys dropped this’

-Its a bracelet you bought

-You say thanks and take it back

-The kid blanches. He grabs a piece of his hair and awkwardly scratches it, then throws it to the ground

-Its a purple ball

-Seriously what the fuck

-Dabi panics and moves his hand

-Nothing comes out

-All might is running at you yelling to let go of one of his students

-But you arent his student

-Does he mean the kid in front of you

-Dabi is panicking youre both stuck in place

-And then the floor falls under your feet

-Dabi puts his palm back on your shoulder pressing down to keep you close

-And you fall into the bar hideout, shigaraki pacing and toga, twice, and shuichi all watching you

-Toga is asking about deku, twice comments how uncool it is for dabi to not even say a villain one liner to the heroes and shuichi is grateful you guys are back but thinks dabi is an idiot for not keeping on moving

-It unconsciously puts a target on dabi’s back, the heroes cannot have it confirmed that the masked man who had you was in league with the league of villains

-Twice, toga, and shuichi all take turns hanging out with you

-Twice likes to be dramatic so you guys get screenplays and act out scenes together

-Toga likes to do boy talk and make up and shop online

-Shuichi likes to watch anime. The sword fighting ones that are super philosophical. Kill la kill. Attack on titan. THAT philosophical stuff.

-They go away on missions often but they always come back with stuff, plants, flowers, something from the outside world

-You have not been able to go back out after the shopping district incident

-Dabi realizes from your amnesia you cant read

-He bought you a very cheesy very embarrassing very risque manga

-He teaches you to read, do math and you learn it all very very fast

-Its more remembering than relearning

-He also brings music

-You all have small dance parties together and kurogiri doesn't mind

-Shigaraki is NOT invited he just stands and. Watches. Its unsettling.

-Kurogiri teaches you how to make drinks in a flashy bartender style

-Dabi tests out what you make

-You two typically spend time casually but movie nights with you all is fun

-And then they have a big mission to go on

-He has to go to a forest camping trip to take one of the students

-Hes gone for about three hours before coming back

-Kurogiri and shigaraki have you go upstairs

-They lock you in

-You can hear angry yelling and then it gets muffled

-You go to sleep for the night

-You wake up from the door being unlocked and yelling

-Dabi pulls your blankets back and you are immediately awake

-A little embarrassed to be caught in your star and rainbow pajamas

-He puts one hand under your chin and makes you look at him

-Toga is behind him saying not to

-Twice is saying that theyre being rude for barging in

-Dabi talks “what do you remember?”

-“I don’t remember anything.”

-He turns to twice and toga “told you everything is fine”

-He looks at you, “remember that outfit from the shopping district? Change into it. We have a guest”

-Its a simple outfit, a big hoodie, casual jeans and a white t shirt with a smiley face heart on it

-You step out of your room and dabi is in his same outfit

-He puts a hand on your shoulder and saunters down the stair with you

-He looks smug

-You come downstairs and there is a boy with spiky blond hair yelling muffled things from behind a steel mask

-His hands are bound too

-You think that this must not be a nice guy

-Shigaraki is hunched over at the bar while twice and toga are laying on the couch

-Spiky haired blond boy looks surprised to see you

-Dabis hand drops to your waist and spiky hair’s eyes follow it

-He looks angry and starts thrashing

-You take a step back but dabi’s hand keeps you in place

-“Are you willing to listen now?”

-Dabi takes a seat in a one person chair and you sit on the armrest

-Shigaraki gives a big long winded speech about everything wrong with society and how heroes are not bettering society but protecting the one thats already in place

-Dabi eventually gives you a tug and sits you in his lap

-Spiky hair has his eyes on you the whole time and he starts yelling again when dabi puts a hand on your knee and rests his chin on top of your head

-You don’t like this kid, he seems violent

-Thats how the first day of bakugo’s kidnapping goes

-Bakugou has to sit and see you his upper classmen crush sit in the lap of a villain and look at him with fear

-You’ve been here this whole time, why haven’t you left?

-Shigaraki wants you two to play this up, wants dabi to pursue you and rile you up in order to help break bakugou’s spirit

-Enter fake dating au

-Becomes real when all might saves you and dabi almost loses you when one for all forcefully opens the portal

-Bakugou is so angry to have you then lose you again

-You and dabi live happily ever after uwu

everyone talkin about the king jumpin off the building at the end of fallen kingdom and how sad it is but everyone is forgetting the part from take back the night where the master villager guy was crushed by the spike flail. like fellas. the king survived. he survived the entire thing, but that master guy is like actually dead.

you know what? time to do a rundown on this original minecraft plus one parody series (take back the night, find the pieces, and dragonhearted are all original songs)

so first of all, let me point out something about fallen kingdom. people dont seem to notice it in the first listen and sometimes they never figure it out but the majority of it is actually a flashback. notice the king’s beard is longer in the night time scenes and everything’s broken. like, of course the king isn’t dead. how would he be walkin around after all that shit happened in the destruction if he was??? anyway, lets move on to something i spent too much time writing.

those songs introduced so many characters that are all unique but arent explored really at all (mostly because the songs dont tell much of a story. just the bare minimum because thats about as much as you can do with minecraft parodies.)

like the guard with the nose itch,

these fellas

and the archer

like you cant really notice it while youre dancing and stuff but these guys are pretty cool to me. notice in the second image of the guard, his mustache is bigger. this shows that time has passed from the flashback on the left and the flashback on the right. it’s showing how the characters age. might just be me but that sort of thing really shows that these characters have lives. the pigs you can tell someone put effort into their designs and the archer you can kind of tell he’s confused and has seemingly never really had to shoot at anyone before

and then onto the more “subtley characterized” characters

the queen

you can tell all the violence is too much for her. she cries as she watches her husband take the sword and go outside. other characters in reaction to the mobs simply grabbed weapons and fought back whereas the queen was just crying. granted we dont see many citizens fighting back against them at all but you get my point.

the three villagers from the search party

you can tell the white and green ones are more experienced. the brown one seems jumpy, frightened, and confused. the white one silently grieves when the green one tells them that the mother is dead.

...and now onto the more heavily focused characters

the pig king

surprisingly, the pig king isn’t really shown to do much other than sit around. they make it seem like he’s the one in charge of everything though. he’s important but he’s not shown as much. just wanted to get him out of the way cause this was a cool screenshot

the pig commander guy

this guy just screams “cocky bastard”. literally every time he’s onscreen he either has a smirk or is reacting to something else. bonus for his little science man on the right. he doesn’t show up again (to my knowledge) but you can tell exactly what kind of character he is. we’ve all seen the “science man raises one finger as the boss ignores him” scene. anyway, back to the cocky guy.

this scene really i think shows his character the best. mustache man here is cornered and afraid and resorts to crying and giving up. this pig guy mocks him for a second before raising his sword.

the trio from the beginning of find the pieces

the chef is another character you can kind of get. like, he’s your basic “happy neighbor pal” or.. or just you know. “the buddy”. he’s sittin there cooking and he’s real happy about it until the hero bursts into the room and he drops the bowl. he takes a second to see who did it and when he sees the hero he laughs about it. like a “ha ha classic hero”. his expression on the bottom is a fading smile after the hero explains a dream he had. this is important for later so hold onto that.

the farmer.

you can tell he’s just done with life. he’s living basically on autopilot at this point. he looks like he’d wear the “i really wish i weren’t here right now” pin. you can kind of see bored and “done with everyone’s shit” and maybe a bit of vague “nostalgia sadness” yknow? also, this is off-topic but this panel makes for a great meme template. go ahead and use it please thank you.

the scientist

honestly? this guy doesnt have any characterization other than “i am the smart”. like he’s just the guy that gets the scroll off the shelf and tells the hero about the kingdom. but i do really like this character nonetheless. you really know exactly what kind of person he is because you’ve seen this kind of person so many times before.

ok so. remember before when i was talking about the chef and told you to remember something? notice the colors of these three’s robes. these might be the same villagers from the search party. this could explain why the hero went to these three villagers and why the cook lost his smile when he heard the hero’s story and why the scientist had a map and knew about the kingdom. the farmer was the confused jumpy guy before but now it seems like nothing can phase him. this might be because he didnt really get to do anything and he wasn’t involved as much because he was just the backpack guy. ‘s also why he doesnt do much here either. that might be a stretch but idc man let me theorize.

also they show up again later

the scientist is the one designing all the iron golems and planning where they patrol during the big fight scene in dragonhearted. the scene is set up in a way that makes it seem like he is crushed and killed by big robo pig herobrine. this is not the case though.

all three are seen later in the final scene. theyre not dead (thank god)

anyway lets talk about the master

sorry for the weird stretching btw i edited all this in paint from screenshots. anyway uhh so the master. you get a little bit of characterization here from him. a lot of these characters are stereotypes but that’s really expected considering this is a minecraft parody series. theres not a whole lot of talking you can do. this guy is literally the master guy in an action comedy. you can tell what kind of action comedy master you get from this scene alone. he makes the hero stew so he’s obviously a very caring master, and the following scene shows that he has a sense of humor, but hides it just to look cool. the moment he notices someone see him laughing he pretends it never happened. also a small detail here i wanna point out real quick. i love that the villagers can separate their arms here, but i ESPECIALLY love when they put them together. like, they dont always do it but they still do. i just love it. anyway...

because of this and the fact that the hero and the master were pretty much the only two in the song for a while there, it actually stings when the master is killed. the hero’s reaction is DEFINITELY a factor in this too. this guy was like a second father to him and now this is the second father he’s lost. FUCK i love these songs SO MUCH. i wonder what it would be like if the master ever met the king

note: i didnt characterize the hero, the king, or herobrine given that they are the main main three characters. you can probably figure out their personalities on your own. (well, almost all of them. herobrine doesnt really have much of one other than “occasionally turns into a disney villain when he finds out the king took the eye out of the portal”)

anyway uh, another thing this series really does is just visuals. cool lookin scenes all over the place here.

like look at this shit. especially the ones from dragonhearted. i think that picture of the golem was used everywhere for a short time and i dont blame them. its an epic shot and i love it.

...and i didnt even include the two classic scenes that you can visualize in your head at any moment

these two moments are so fucking powerful you don’t understand. like look at these. god. shit, this is just.. hhhh i love this series so much. you know, sometimes i like to think of stupid theories... like imagine if revenge was actually part of this series. it has no effect on the story but it seems to follow the same “rules” (all characters are in hardcore mode is a big one). idk maybe they did happen in the same universe but steve is just a great ancestor to the king or something. anyway, thats all the energy i can spend on one post. it took an hour and a half to write this and grab the screenshots. feel free to add on to this list of things we all love about fallen kingdom and the others.

ALRIGHT! so the song itself is a bop, i prefer the previous openings so far but itll probably grow on me

the first visual is super cute! i like the sudden disjointed ... something or other that they do here where its just the sextuplets in the second shot in a vacuum away from everything else. vibin in the void. if i were to look too deep into it id say itd be that feeling of being lost/listless which is a p common theme in ososan

the fact that Tanjiro gets his sword - literally is only weapon - snapped like a shitty piece of plastic cutlery and still gets right back up to fight Rui is, if nothing else, respectable.

one single attack destroyed the only thing in Tanjiro’s possession capable of killing demons and Tanjiro’s over here like “maybe I can bop him on the head with this hilt”

Inosuke, inches from death, encountering someone really cool he admires a lot “hey fucking fight me”

absolutely worth mentioning they literally shut off all the music and sound for the last panel. just a pop noise to Giyuu’s face and silence.

the rope scene is just. top notch visual gag.

like we see Giyuu getting out this big-ass rope with no explanation while Inosuke challenges him to fight. And then it’s 7 seconds of the camera zoomed in on Inosuke’s face as he yells about Tanjiro being wrong. THEN pan out and we see Inosuke’s been tied up in the tree in the meantime. without Inosuke realizing. I’m living.

Giyuu “probably thinks child leashes are a great invention” Tomioka.

both Giyuu and Tanjiro are the Protective friends just polar opposites of the spectrum

Tanjiro - responsible dad friend: looks out for all his friends. gently but firmly scolds them for misbehaving. will put own happiness aside for the happiness of his friends. Giyuu - callous granddad friend: WILL protect his friends, but as curmudgeonly as possible, with no hint he has any emotional investment. "back in my day corporeal punishment was normal and i turned out alright". would probably let children play with swords unsupervised.

black, nothing special, my mom got it from a dollar store for me bc my old one was literally falling apart but i refused to replace it

the only thing i can think of that i would probably not eat even if that meant it gets thrown away is steak, or any cut of red meat. i have a lot of trouble swallowing it for some reason. most other foods i hate i would still rather eat than waste them

theres no really comfortable temperature for me i think. im always either too warm or too cold. but since i spend most time in my bedroom which only gets sunlight for about 4 hours a day, im usually too cold

painting with watercolours and listening to music

i avoid sweets so i dont really know the different breeds of candy bar

HOW DO YOU USUALLY PLOT WITH OTHERS, DO YOU GIVE INPUT OR LEAVE MOST WORK TOWARDS YOUR PARTNER?: i try to map out some basic info abt their characters that i otherwise don’t know from their bio or verses and try to pick out points of confrontation or similarities to expand on with giselle that can be used as points for like a starter to happen. its either that or sometimes i have really stupid ideas i just toss out there like ‘LMAO THEYRE BREAKING SHIT AT DISNEYLAND’ and go buck wild from there if the other person is down. i also always try to warn people or get a gauge for what subjects to avoid and steer clear of considering that giselle is a bit of a Freak(tm) and will say and do bad things.

Do you think Cinnabar could have stopped/convinced Phos from going to the moon in chapter 52? For example instead of Cinnabar changing her dialogue to 'Be careful' and says 'Don't go!' like they did. How will that effect the story? Or if Phos still went would Cinnabar's actions changes Phos's actions.

you know that thing Phos does where they routinely come to cinnabar and spill their guts about their next genius plan and then disappear and leave cinnabar alone again?

cause it’s exactly what happens in ch 52 and it’s what causes the rift between phos and shinsha.

so lets spill some tea on how shinsha was going to follow phos to the moon and on how phos sank our ship

so, let’s start from the fact that i love phos. and that this panel was an ugly move.

because i love phos. i love them very much. and this was an ugly move, shinsha, and i’ve written about how messed up it is here, here and here (im not afraid of criticizing both of my kids, they’re both dumb in their own way). still, thoseb words are not 100% uncalled for cause phos is such a dumb child and the way they treat shinsha just aint right

you cant use shinsha like that! you cant just sweep shinsha into the storm if youre not going to commit. ofc shinsha draws the conclusion that phos cant empathize with them.

constantly asking shinsha for advice and constantly asking shinsha to listen put a huge weight on cinnabar’s conscience.

shinsha is in this perennial state of waiting: they know phos is betraying the gems and risking their life but they’re unable to do anything about it. it’s just so messed up.

which brings me to your question: could cinnabar persuade phos to stay?

it’s funny cause shinsha was the one who wanted to go in the first place, so they must have thought about all the dangers of going. they must empathize with phos so much in ch 52: they know what wishing to go to the moon means. they know it’s scary.

this is why, i believe, shinsha would have come with phos.

shinsha already expressed their desire to pair up with phos in ch 36 (pic below) but phos didnt hear them. now, look how surprised shinsha appears in ch 52, in the panels right after phos asks them to go to the moon together.

one panel is entirely dedicated to shinsha and phos’ hands and we can see that shinsha is raising their arm, as if they were about to accept phos’ hand.

it’s like shinsha is about to say yes. theyre really thinking about it, theyre really taking the time to give phos’ proposal a chance.

after all, this is what cinnabar wanted: to be of use, to mean something for someone, to have purpose. a job, if you want, or better: the things that come with having a job.

cinnabar is just so desperate for connection and they feel for phos so much in chapter 52. if phos is set on going to the moon, shinsha is willing to risk their life to go with them, specifically because it’s dangerous and specifically because phos will be alone. because shinsha knows what being alone means.

but then, as always, phos doesnt understand. they cant see through shinsha and they ruin it all. phos takes their words back and cinnabar slouches, disappointed: they take back their arm.

once again, phos has decided for cinnabar before cinnabar had a chance to decide for themselves. phos keeps sweeping shinsha into and out of the storm, without giving them the time and the chance to speak their mind until it’s too late and shinsha has become hostile.

even after phos takes their proposal back, cinnabar still cares. theyre still empathizing, they’re still concerned. so they ask phos not to go but phos, again, like the dumbass they are, doesnt hear them.

at this point it’s too late. cinnabar is all but a resolute gem: they’re tired. they think it over in their mind and they give up: anxiety/avoidance/years of isolation take over. they simply tell phos to take care.

i believe cinnabar couldnt persuade phos not to go because that wasnt their goal. they wanted to come with phos and be of use rather than stay behind again, waiting, knowing that phos was in danger.

which is what makes this chapter heartbreaking. it’s the chapter where cinnabar starts to distance themselves from phos.

when phos comes back, in ch 61, they ask shinsha to come with them again, but this time shinsha straight up refuses.

its like they’re telling phos that they’re through. they dont wanna have anything to do with their plans anymore, they dont trust phos to find them a job and a future because phos doesnt understand them. and thats why shinsha sides with the earth gems.

and it looked abrupt at the time. i remember thinking it was abrupt and cruel when i read ch 61 for the first time, because i thought shinsha and phos had this special bond and they’d become a power team or something. but shinsha’s refusal makes sense

It was a process: phos and cinnabar gradually grew apart, one incomprehension after the other, until it became visible in chapter 61 (and 71). but it all started here, from the umpteenth communication failure between these two rocks.

Anime Attraction

A/N: High School au. Fic with ichiro, you two slowly falling in love over the span of a 4 day convention and bonding over the fact that you’re closeted weebs. (So he would like tdd era ichiro) And again! I use neutral pronouns! hope you enjoy~

Day 1: You were very excited, happy, elated, every happy word in the book! This year, you were finally going to your first anime convention. Unfortunately, you were a bit of a closeted weeb. People knew you watched anime….just not your extreme obssession with it. Maybe extreme was too harsh for you case, but you were sure that would be the situation if they ever saw your room, filled with anime posters, merch, etc.However, those were all bought online or in stores….youve never actually been to a convention.

Online, you heard many good things about it, and that people there, for the most part, were friendly. You smiled as you got off the train, an empty backpack on your bag, besides essentials, inside an empty tote bag for you posters. You had planned for this for months. Saving up all the money you could from your allowances. Your wallet, besides money for the train and food to eat, was going to be completely emptied by the end of the day. Finally, you took your jacket off, revealing a ( favorite anime) anime shirt on your person. One of your favorites. You could never choose. You could talk about it for days. However….it was Under rated. It was also a bit old...and you were late to watch it, so the fandom dwindled down.

You were amazed as you saw many cosplays, a bit too nervous to ask for pictures, or even compliment them, but you hoped they received your compliments in spirit….something like that. It was….also really big and crowded. You got too into your head, overthinking a bunch of things, that you didn’t see the larger man in front of you, hitting his back.

“O-oh im sorry, I wasn’t paying attention,” you said, bowing quickly. You looked up at the man, gulping, quickly taken aback by how pretty he was, different colored eyes, red and green. It almost seemed like he was in cosplay, but he was just wearing a naruto shirt with black jeans on, a naruto headband around his forehead.

Ichiro blinked and smiled,”no need to apologize, I was kind of standing here in the middle of everyone anyway,”his eyes went down to your shirt and his eyes sparkled,”wait….thats a (favorite anime) isnt it! Whose your favorite character?”, he asked. You were taken aback about how eager and happy he seemed, but it definitely managed to make you relax a bit.

“My favorite character is [ ],”you said, stating your reasoning,”oh- sorry….I didn’t mean to talk that long,” Ichiro chuckled,”thats fine, I love them too! For mostly the same reasons, theyre kind of cool. This is my first convention so Im excited its going off to great start, thanks.”

Oh? It was his first time as well? “Its my first time too, I came here alone, I didn’t expect to be this big, theres so many people.” Ichiro nodded,”Im here by myself too, are you here all four days?” You nodded. “If you dont mind it, we can walk around together, ah! Sorry if thats a bit too forward….”,he trailed off. To be honest, Ichiro was a closeted weeb. So he had no one to talk to, let alone drag to a con. “Oh no, Um, its fine. I would like that...even though I know everyone here loves anime….”,you trailed off, the guy, whose name you still didn’t know, finished your thought,”because theres so many people conversing and being you feel like everyone already has their own cliques and you realize youre alone.”

Well. That. Yes that. You smiled,”Yeah, its that, and my nerves and anxiety.”

Ichiro stuck his hand out,”Yamada Ichiro, 2nd year high school student in Ikebukuro. Nice to meet you.”

“ l/n, f/n, also 2nd year in a high school located in yokohama, nice to meet you”m you said and shook his hand. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Day 2:

The first day, the two of you had walked around, played games, went to panels together, learning much more about each other. You agreed to meetup at the same place in the morning. Of course, you were even more excited than you were yesterday. You were dressed in more casual clothing, but backpack was now decorated with buttons you found. Soon, you heard your name being called out and waved your hand,”Good Morning Yamada-san”, you said, greeting him.

Ichiro smiled and spoke,”Morning! Did you sleep well?”, he asked. You shook your head in disagreement,”I barely got any sleep, I was excited for today.” Ichiro laughed,”so did I, so what should we do today?”,he said, taking out the convention program guide. “Hmmmm, theres a bunch of panels,”you said, going to the side of him and looking at the program,”how to successfully master naruto hand signs….”,you trailed off. They really….had a panel for everything.

Ichiro’s face lit up,” that sounds cool, want to go? Although I already know a couple…”,he said, and you laughed,”what? You going to become the next hokage Yamada-san?”, you teased a bit, but he went along with it, of course he did. You found out about this from yesterday. That he was like this. “I am gonna be next hokage, just believe it!”, he said.

“Thats naruto’s punchline you cant just steal it,” you said, watching Ichiro as he thought, then spoke again, very excitedly,”Im going to be next hokage, because I said so!”, he said, putting out a thumb. For some reason, it had you laughing a lot,”b-bbecause you said so? Ahahaha, well, you sure have a passion like naruto, I think thats all you need, its cute”, you said, realizing that you had just called the other cute.

Ichiro blushed and put his hand behind his back,”Sorry...I just cant be like this a lot in real life without getting teased for it, so its a bit refreshing,”he said and you nodded,, understanding completely.

“Well, lets go learn some jutstus even though they wont help against a gun but who cares, because its an anime convention, and we’re doing what we love,”you said confidently, more confident than you would expect from yourself. Ichiro nodded,”Dattebayo, lets go!”, he saidm turning around and walking. You were really having too much fun. Being attracted to him went way over your head for now, simply enjoying the time the two of you spent together.

Later on in the day, the two of you found an anime photo booth, Ichiro dragging you by the arm towards it,”for memories!”, he said. The two of you got in and hit the naruto theme poses. Of course, you indulged him, he was cute when he got his way. And, you didn’t have to worry about poses. Instead, they gave you poses to do.

The first was a naruto sign for any jutsu, the second peace signs, the third you had to stick your tongues at each other, seeming annoyed, and the last one….got you. It was only a hug, but they way Ichiro hugged you quickly and tightly, pushing both of your faces together, eft you shocked, and you were sure the picture didn’t turn out well. Once you got out and looked at it, Ichiro pointed to last one,”its like you were trying so hard not to blink, but we’re cute, arent we?”,he said and you laughed:yea we really are”, you replied, more focused on the current pace of your heart...beating very rapidly. You paid for two copies so you could keep it. The rest of the day, you two kept up your shenanigans. It was tough leaving, but you were going to come back tomorrow and, hopefully, your heart would learn to behave.

Day 3:

The two of you sat down to eat lunch on the third day, already having gone through a couple activities.

“Theres Jiro, then theres Saburo, and Saburo is the oldest. We’re all pretty close but Saburo and Jiro always fight a lot, typical sibling stuff…..and a lot of the times it includes me. I keep telling them I dont have favorites but they never listen,”Ichiro sighed with a smile on his face. It wasn’t an exhausted sigh though, he was used to it, it was just how they worked.

You smiled as he rambled on about his brothers. It was very clear that he cherished the both of them dearly and would do anything for them. “That must be nice….Im an only child so I could never relate to these type of things. Thats why I got into anime really, theres was no one that I could play with at the snap of a finger if I wanted to-oh Im not sad about it or anything, I love anime, it was really there for me in trying times, plus the internet.”

Ichiro nodded and then spoke,”Well, you have me now too, and you can be as passionate as you want, no holding back. You have my number now and its already fun texting you when we’re not at the convention.” He was right. After you guys left, you were quickly texting each other at home before you went to sleep. You sent each other memes,pictures, and talked about a bunch of different topics, that often you had smiling or laughing at your phone.

At that point….you knew had a crush. It was only two days but he was just so…..it was the little things really, not just the fact that you had anime in common. When you were walking through the convention center, going through a massive crowd, he told you to hold onto his jacket, so you wouldn’t get lost. Or how he quickly offered to help hold your stuff when you were buying merchandise. Or even him talking about how much he loves his brothers. Rather than weird, it was insanely cute to you.

It wasnt love per say…..well. Lets be real. You were a sucker when it came to love. Honestly, you dont even feel like counting how many crushes you had but none of those ever came to fruition. You should just focus on your anime boys but the moment some other boy is even the slightest bit kind to you, like helping you carry books, your heart falls. Despite that though, you felt like this was different. More than just a couple simple acts of kindness.

“Im really enjoying our time here, we’re going to the cosplay masquerade today right? We still have some time to kill, want to go to the game hall?”, you asked,”then we can see which one of us is better at dance dance revolution.” Ichiro smiled and nodded his head,”Yeah! Youre on!”

After that, the two of you managed to spend all of your time in the hall. Ichiro was by a claw machine and you commented,”I suck at these things,”then looked inside, seeing what plushies they had. “I think im pretty decent,”Ichiro said, walking up,”sometimes I won stuff for saburo when I was little...he grew out of it though,”Ichiro said with a laugh.He wanted to try it.

“Good Luck Yamada-kun!”, you said, cheering him on. You were amazed by how focused he looked. “Do you want anything specific?”,he asked you. “Wait, me?”, you said, trying to clarify. Ichiro laughed,”I think you’re the only l/n here,”he said. That...kind of caught you off guard. But you walked up and placed your hands against the glass. “Ummmm, that cat in the middle is kind of cute.”

Ichiro nodded. The first time, he managed to pick the plushie up for about three seconds before it fell, but that was better than what you could do! The second time, he managed to grab it again, your eyes wide in anticipation as you followed the claw and plushie to the drop off slot. “Oh my god, you did it!”,you said, going to high five both of Ichiro’s hands but, instead of letting go, he held them and put them down,”Yeah I did! Guess I didn’t lose my skill after all.” “Yeah...youre amazing”, you said, trying to not comment on the fact that he was still holding both of your hands. God….your heart was a mess. There was no denying you fell for him. At most, it was very high like at this point.

Day 4:

Ichiro was excited to see you again. Well, half-excited and half-sad. He really liked hanging out with you. More often than not, he found himself thinking about how you look best when theres a smile on your face. So, he always did dumb things to make you smile, no matter how stupid it may have looked. Maybe it was because you didn’t think his obsession was weird. When you guys talked, your interests lined up more than he thought they would. It was perfect.

Of course, he eventually figured out that he’d want to see you, in a more romantic context, that it is. He knew his feelings towards you were different. Honestly, he even weirdly got a little bit jealous when you mentioned how hot a specific anime character was. Ichiro didn’t necessarily plan on confessing that day….but who knows how things would turn out. Yes, it had only been three days, but he felt like he knew you already. Really, you guys always messaged each other.

The conversations would go dull for an hour or so but one link to a meme and that sparked a conversation that continued for a while. It was great. He had never felt so validated.

“L/n-san! Hey, morning!”,he said as he walked up to you. You looked like you were thinking hard about something, but Ichiro didn’t comment on it.

In fact, you were. Thinking about how you wouldn’t be able to see him so frequently. It made you….sadder than you expected. Granted you could travel to see him, but it was also due to the fact that it was the last day of the convention. Here, you could be yourselves without glancing over you shoulder every couple seconds in fear that someone you knew would spot you. It was so much fun, especially because of him!

Its for the best though….your funds were just about dried out. You couldn’t help but smile as you saw him though,”hey, good morning to you too, ready for the last day?” Ichiro laughed,”Yes and No because this has been very exciting.” You nodded in agreement,”it has, it does suck that we cant experience this everyday.”

“well!”,Ichiro clapped his hands,”lets not worry about that and focus on having fun, okay?” Your smile got wider,”yes, okay!” Ichiro spoke,”Datteba-”, then he pointed towards you,”Yo!”, you said, the two of you giggling. This had become your thing now, apparently, but you two werent used to it, hence you laughing off you embarrassment.

You went to the artist alley and exhibit hall one last time, taking a lot more pictures together than usual, even with cosplayers! Ichiro helped you out a lo with expressing that you wanted pictures with them and that was yet another thing that you loved about him. Without even asking him to do so, he just did it on a whim, and that made you incredibly happy.

A bit later, it was closing ceremonies. It wasnt much really, but anything to just spend even a little more time with Ichiro. However, that ended sooner than you expected. And you didn’t know what to do with yourself.

The two of you sat outside on a bench.

“So, I suppose this is it…”,you said. You had to get back early today anyway. Yet, you really didn’t want to. You looked up as Ichiro spoke,”no, its not it. We still have each other’s numbers, we can make it work, I-well….these past few days have been really fun for me,”Ichiro blushed, placing his hand behind his neck. Was he going to confess? If he didn’t do it now he knew he’d procrastinate on doing so forever. He didn’t necessarily have to make sure you were his in this exact moment, but his heart wanted an answer as soon as possible, before he got in too deep.

“The thing is….I want us to be more than just friends. I just….the more we talked, the more I found myself drawn to you. Like I can tell you anything. Its really easy to be myself around you, l/n, I want...to get closer. So, would you go out with me? Or not now, I mean you can think about it but...yeah.”,he said, face blushing. He had only confessed once in his lifetime and that was during elementary….he was quickly shut down.

You….couldn’t believe your ears. Did you really manage to find someone who was interested you at an anime convention. Well, you were sure there were more interesting stories but this was still way out of your league. You even thought he was way out of your league.

“I….we can date. I feel the same, about you, I like talking to you. And I think whats making me so sad is that I cant see you...not the convention part,”you said, looking towards Ichiro and seeing his grow excited. He grabbed your hands quickly and held them,”really?! Thats great.”,he said, letting go than hugging you. Oh. This was happening. It took you a couple seconds to process the hug before you reciprocated it.

Ichiro pulled away, looking down at you, a smile on his face,”when I talk with you, I feel like the happiest and luckiest man in the world. I know love is too strong of a word right now, but I want to do my best to make you happy.”

You were so flustered that you made no response, even more so when you felt his hand on your cheek and saw him leaning in. It all happened quickly. You closed your eyes and suddenly his lips were on yours. No movement, but it lingered for a moment, before he pulled away.

That was your first...kiss. You didn’t mind that it got taken by him but still….it was so much to process. Ichiro brought you back to reality,”Ikebukuro isn’t too far from Yokohama on the train, maybe we could meet in the middle on weekends, or switch up, ah, well I guess we can talk about this letter, getting ahead of myself,”he said and chuckled, which only prompted you to let out a soft laugh. He was like an eager puppy that you wanted to pet. Weird how he so easily calmed your nerves by the sounds of your laughs.

As of Sunday afternoon, more than 93 million Americans had cast a ballot in the November elections. Thats about two-thirds of the total number of people who voted in 2016, and there are still two days until Election Day.

This is excellent news. In the middle of a global pandemic that has taken the lives of nearly a quarter of a million Americans, upended the national economy and thrown state election procedures into turmoil, there were reasonable concerns that many people would not vote at all. The numbers to date suggest that 2020 could see record turnout.

While celebrating this renewed citizen involvement in Americas political process, dont lose sight of the bigger, and darker, picture. For decades, Americans have voted at depressingly low rates for a modern democracy. Even in a good year, more than one-third of all eligible voters dont cast a ballot. In a bad year, that number can approach two-thirds.

Why are so many Americans consistently missing in action on Election Day?

For many, its a choice. They are disillusioned with government, or they feel their vote doesnt matter because politicians dont listen to them anyway.

Democratic Congressman Suggests Kevin Mccarthy Is ‘afraid Of Donald Trump’

Congressman Jim McGovern said House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy may be a coward who is afraid of former President Donald Trump after he voted against plans to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol riot.

In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, Rep. McGovern said McCarthy had got “basically everything he wanted” in the proposals for the independent commission, noting that its members would be made up evenly of Republicans and Democrats.

The aim of the commission would be to review the events that led to the deadly attack on Congress, any intelligence failures and how the government responded. Did Trump Damage American Democracy

Did Trump permanently damage American democracy? This question has spawned a veritable cottage industry of hand wringing over the state of American democracyunderstandably so. Never before have we had a president who schemed to overturn legitimate election results, who attacked the press and the civil servants who worked for him, who admired dictators, who blatantly profited from his public office and who repeatedly lied to the public for his own selfish purposes. But while Trumps four years of rhetoric have been a shock to democratic norms, did they inflict permanent damage on our democracy? My answer is a qualified no. The guardrails of democracy held. The institutions designed to check autocracy are intact.

Successful democratic systems are not designed for governments composed of ethical men and women who are only interested in the public good. the back is quiet and dim, sounds of festivity faint behind every other door. Clear blue skies overhead past the weird looking glass ceiling. A short way in he opens a door, which leads to a shift in aesthetic; wooden panelling walls, a short hallway leading to a stunted staircase. All clean lacquered wood.

An open doorway at the top of which leads to a balcony at the side of a brook. It’s somwhere relatively near- you’re not suddenly in Paris, you can see the familiar forest near the house on the skyline, well past the city- but its still jarring. He must have rented the space for this purpose.

a few other folks are enjoying food and drinks on the balcony, and music plays faintly from speakers installed overhead on the side of an otherwise silent building.

Maybe mouse’s ~big plan~ is to cram her full of gyro like a fancy pasty, but her hope flees just as quickly once she notices that nota is only carrying… one gyro. She sets the gyro down in front of… Just mouse, all the way at the other end of the table.

And the gyro is so lovingly overfilled with meat and sauce and slices of veggie, one of the more overfilled gyros she’s seen! There’s steam still coming off of the freshly sliced meat! Her mouth is agape a little as she gawks at it… She unconsciously is leaning forward on the table. She only realizes this when a line of her drool plips onto it. Her eyes go a little wide and she snaps her jaws shut, and makes eye contact with you. Oh. So this is what you had planned.
