Summary: It’s Valentine’s day and you’re in work at a café all day. But Levi is there to at least provide some eye candy.

‘He’s so pretty I might pass out,’ Hitch leant over the counter, her chin in her hand as she unabashedly stares across the café at the man sipping at his tea.

His posture is perfect, balancing a book in one hand while his other holds the top of the tea cup delicately to his mouth. He blends into the café atmosphere like he was there upon its creation. You settled in behind the counter. It was still early, an orange tint hanging on the edges of the sky. And Sunday mornings were quieter than most, people taking their time to get out of bed. You sighed at the dreamy thought.

You were single, and happily so. But you were allowed to indulge in the scenario of a coffee and pancakes being brought to you while you awoke slowly.

Were the pancakes accompanied by steel grey eyes and an undercut from time to time? You could neither confirm nor deny.

Still stuck in your daydreams, you hadn’t noticed that exact pair of grey eyes entering the café and approaching the counter.

He took a moment to look you over while it seemed your head was somewhere else. Your hair sat neater than usual, extra makeup seemed to have been applied; your cheeks more rosy than usual. A pink sweater draped around your figure and Levi swore he could smell the fresh laundry scent wafting from it.

His heart deflated slightly. You probably had a Valentine’s date. He scoffed at himself in his own head. Of course you did, one look at you screamed that you were bound to have people flooding your phone. He chose to ignore any time he noticed a customer flirting with you, but it definitely happened.

You leap when Levi lets off a small cough to catch your attention. Your face immediately blaring with heat as you search for words in your head. You often found herself flustered when it came to serving the stoic faced man.

‘Hi.’

‘Hey’

‘What, uh, what can I get you?’

‘Are you okay?’

‘Yes. Yes! I’m fine thank you for asking. Ignore my last question by the way I know- uh, I know it’s tea.’

You cut yourself off from rambling. Giving a small nod and beginning to tap on the register screen in front of you, putting through his usual pot of black tea.

You stare at the screen with an unnecessary intensity, trying to focus on the words and wipe the image of Levi delivering your breakfast from her mind. An irrational fear that maybe he was secretly a mind reader brewed in the back of your head. It would explain his constant blank slate of a face, he was constantly processing other’s thoughts.

What was actually running through Levi’s head was how pretty you looked in the glow of the morning sun, your face tinted pink in nervousness.

He only slightly fought off a small smile when you beamed up at him with your sweet voice, ‘I’ll bring it over once it’s ready.’

Levi spent the rest of the morning watching you dart around with drinks and dishes. You did most Sunday mornings solo, smiling at usual customers, rhyming off your catalogue of memorised drinks. Levi felt like a dark cloud hanging over the café, dressed in dark colours in the corner and avoiding conversation. While you were a bright ball of sunshine that seemed to honestly just want to make others smile.

The thought of actually talking to you had his tea cup trembling in his hand.

And so he buried his head deeper into his book, settling for hearing your sweet laugh float around the shop.

You sighed, what was originally a five hour shift extended to ten after Hitch called you begging to cover her half of the day, a last minute Valentine date cropping up or something. And who were you to deny the girl some romance?

Your eyes drifted around the shop, it was now three thirty pm, only an hour and half until it was time to shut. The day had mostly been couples wandering through to pick up a takeaway drink in the midst of a romantic stroll. It was hard to resist a wistful look after them as they huddled together in the February chill.

You shook your head from the thought and continued to restock the muffins, even though it would be unlikely that all would be sold before closing came around.

Standing up your head automatically took a turn in Levi’s direction, this was usually the time he would be due a tea top-up. And on cue he set down his empty cup and glanced up at you.

Two pairs of eyes met and you struggled to fight off the heat rising up your neck under his intense stare. His mouth drops open slightly, barely noticeable from the distance between them.

But you notice, the half inch that his shoulders tense up. The miniscule shake of his book. Your throat is suddenly dry, but manages to croak out, ‘more?’

‘Yes, please,’ the words come almost as a sigh. You hold the electric gaze for another second, before scurrying behind the counter, busying your mind with making up the pot of tea.

You drop it to him wordlessly. Keeping your head down, adrenaline still pumping through you from the previous moment.

The last hour and a half of service passes by easily. You avoid any of your usual indulgent looks at the man in the corner of the café, while you begin closing up.

Levi knows he has to go, he’s closed over his book already, one hand on his jacket that’s been draped over his chair all day.

But he can’t just go. His assumption from the morning has proven wrong - at least so far. You don't seem to have a Valentine’s date. And after your...whatever that was, he’s not about to just leave without so much as a hello.

You stood on the small step ladder, fingers nimbly unpinning the heart shaped decorations when his voice pulled you from your thoughts.

‘Um, thanks for your service today.’ Levi cringes. He swears he sounds like a robot.

‘Oh,’ Kasia stares down at him from atop the ladder, ‘thank you.’

Levi swallows. It’s a start.

‘You don’t usually work this late. On a Sunday.’

‘One of the other girls asked if I could cover her. She got a last minute Valentine date.’

‘What about you? Don’t you have a girlfriend you should’ve been with all day?’

‘Do you think if I had a girlfriend I’d be here all day every Sunday?’ He lets out a laugh that could be mistaken for a cough.

‘Oh. I just thought…’

‘Thought what?’

‘I don’t know actually. You’re just, uh…’ you stutter, the phrase you’re just so pretty, balancing on the edge of your tongue. ‘What?’ Levi cringes again, his voice coming out harsher than intended, but he freezes up at the quiet words that escape your mouth.

‘Just really pretty.’

They’re barely a whisper, he thinks he could almost be making it up. His subconscious is dreaming up what he wants to hear. But upon looking up at your face, there’s a fear evident in your eyes. As if the words hadn’t meant to escape.

You next words have more energy behind, ‘I am so sorry. That was so inappropriate.’

‘It’s fine, really. You’re, um, also really pretty.’

You swear if your face could get any hotter it’d melt the chocolate in the cookies. Voice immediately fades away again, ‘thank you.’

‘So is it uhh, just you closing up?’

‘Yeah. Just me.’

‘Do you mind if I wait for you? To walk you home? It’ll be too dark to walk alone by the time you’re finished.’

This time you can’t fight the smile as it consumes your whole face, ‘I’d like that.’

His hand reaches out suddenly and a thumb swipes against your cheek.

His eyes go wide upon realising what he did, ‘you had some chocolate. On your cheek.’

You try to respond. But all you can feel is the tingling left over from his touch. And how you wanna feel it again.

Wasted Love (part 3) [T.S.]

A/N: I have no motivation to write so enjoy this even though I was supposed to make this chapter a lot longer. Hopefully I’ll be back with the rest of this series soon but who knows at this point lolz (getting this degree is going to end me)

Easter brought about yet another event at the rink. Alessia was quietly finishing up work in her office when 5pm rolled around, and she stretched into her seat before reaching for her phone. One last text from Claire had gone unanswered, but it was only one last confirmation of their plans for the night so Alessia didn’t make much of it.

Fridays were the only days everyone could really leave work on time, so she got up from her desk and began gathering her essentials back in her purse. She had plenty of time to get out, Claire was only meant to meet her in twenty minutes and they were hanging out at the bar across the street.

Ever since she had started taking time to be with the team after work Alessia had realised that letting Jordan believe she was working late was the best way for her to get some time with a friend.

“Allie let’s go!” Tyler barged into her office without so much as a knock. It startled her enough to make her jump, and she got ready to tell him off, the words about to leave her mouth until she saw the look of excitement on his face.

“Go where?” She softened, putting her bag over her shoulder.

“Come on,” he bounced on his feet and pulled her from behind her desk to drag her through the facility.

“What’s got you so excited?” Alessia exclaimed as she stumbled after him, following blindly and dodging a few people along the way.

She didn’t have to think much to know he was taking her to the rink, but what she didn’t understand was why. Tonight was a family skate, players with their wives and girlfriends, kids and other relatives. Alessia didn’t fit in there and she had already told Tyler she had other plans.

Tyler stopped abruptly when they reached their destination, and in her course Alessia almost sent them both toppling over. She still collided into his back, but he didn’t say anything about it.

“Look,” he motioned to the ring, decorated with a banner for the event and coloured fairy lights all over the place.

Families were on the ice, Alessia was able to spot Jamie among the others. The youngest players were messing around although mindful of the kids around, and the older ones taught their kids how to skate. Some held their babies, making them discover what being on the ice felt like for the first time.

Tonight was special and Alessia didn’t want to be in the middle of it. This was their own little universe, it was intimate and she was just one of their coworkers.

“Why do you want me to go?” She asked quietly because Tyler had mentioned she should come at least three times this week.

“Because now you’re with us, you should get to enjoy the fun parts of the job too. Weren’t you supposed to meet with a friend tonight?” He asked, watching her nod slowly. “Why don’t you tell her to come in, we’ll get her a pair of skates, it’ll be fun for everyone.”

Tyler’s excitement had died down, but he was still looking at her with the same expectant look in his eyes. His voice was calm, he used that soothing tone he always took to reassure her whenever she was stressed or upset, yet she still hesitated.

Jordan was the main thing on Alessia’s mind, and not in a positive way. His frustration about her staying out after work was still growing, the whole thing had escalated and Alessia didn’t want to upset him further.

“Ty, I really can’t stay late,”

“It’s five,” Tyler almost whined. “Live a little!” He made his tone cheerful again to get her to cave in.

He knew he had won the second she shook her head with a sigh, taking her phone out of her bag and texting Claire about the change of plans. She was too busy typing to see the way he beamed, but had Jamie been around he would have surely given Tyler the disapproving look he was growing accustomed to whenever he was around Allie.

What she did see was the way he bounced on his feet again as he got impatient waiting for her, and the corners of her lips rose. He could be such a child sometimes.

“Alright Seguin,” Alessia followed him to get a pair of skates, sitting on a bench to lace them. “You’re lucky I actually like skating,”

“Oh yeah?” His own skates replaced his shoes in what felt like half a second to Alessia. “Need help?” He noticed her pulling at the laces.

“I’m good,” she refused, finishing up fast enough and getting up again. The tightness around her feet was familiar, and she suddenly felt more excited about stepping onto the ice.

“Show me what you got,” Tyler motioned for her to go first.

In her confidence, Alessia forgot how many kids were on the ice on top of a bunch of reckless hockey players. She started off just fine and Tyler remained behind to watch, laughing at the way she showed off her skills, but as soon as a little girl cut off her trajectory she lost her balance.

Tyler stepped on the ice, gliding slowly to come help, but with a few awkward waves of her arms she almost regained her stability. She would have been just fine if someone hadn’t skated fast right next to her at that exact moment, startling her again and making her fall backwards.

Alessia’s exclamation when she hit the ice had Tyler rushing to be next to her in a few seconds.

“Are you okay?” He worried immediately, trying to see if she was hurt.

“You get slammed into the boards ten times harder and keep playing,” she winced as she pushed herself into a sitting position. “Of course I’m okay,” she reassured him and accepted his hand to get back to her feet. “Thanks,”

“I can see you’re a pro,” Tyler chuckled now that he was sure she was fine. “Thanks for the demo, champ.”

“I can skate!” Alessia defended herself, glaring at him and letting go of his hand to skate ahead of him, trying to prove her point.

“Yeah sure,” he laughed and ignored his protests, easily getting in front of her and turning around to skate backwards with her hands in his. “Let me just make sure you don’t end up on your ass again in less than ten seconds,”

“Rude,” she snorted but made no move to get out his hold.

They skated hand in hand for a while until Alessia’s phone pinged with yet another text that let her know Claire made it to the rink. They parted so that she could catch up with her friend and the two ended up holding hands as they talked and skated together.

“So this is your life now, uh?” Claire asked as they took a break on a bench.

“I mean, it’s actual work during the day but yeah,” Alessia leaned back against the wall behind them, taking in what she had achieved. “It still feels crazy that I made it here all on my own,”

“Well it’s not like Jordan would’ve been any help,” her friend snorted, earning a glare. “Oh come on,”

“You always make him sound so bad, we’ve been together for ages,” Alessia sighed and pouted a little, making her turn softer as she replied.

“No, you make him sound bad and I just put it in a less concealed way.” Claire brought her knee up on the bench to look at her. “When’s the last time you actually had a good time being around him?”

“We get along great at home,” her tone became defensive and Claire knew better than to try to have this conversation again.

“Okay,” she decided to drop it and stood back up. “Come on, let’s get back to it,”

Tyler saw them coming and stopped to let them step onto the ice without being trampled by the rest of the team. Most kids were tired now and off the ice, so things were getting a little rowdy.

“Ladies,” he motioned for them to go first, giving Alessia his stupidest grin to make her laugh.

“This is the first time you actually look like you have manners,” she teased because of something that had happened earlier during the week.

“Excuse me?” Tyler gasped, his hand over his hard to show his offense.

“You eat like an animal!” Alessia threw back, earning an eye roll and a whine from him.

“It was one time!” He complained before starting to make excuses for himself. “It didn’t have breakfast before practice and I was running late for a meeting, I had to be fast!”

“You’re disgusting,” she chuckled in response while Claire watched from the side, amused at the exchange.

“Oh I’m disgusting? You sure you wanna play that card in this situation?” He slowly inched closer to her, and since Alessia was facing him and had no chance of escaping by skating backwards she immediately started warning him.

“Tyler I swear to god I will- FUCK!” She screamed as he threw her over his shoulder and kept on skating. “I’ll kill you!” She tried to hit him but he was laughing too hard to care.

“Take it back!” He sped up, taking advantage of the space the others were clearing now that they were staring at the scene he was causing.

“Put me down you freak!” Alessia tried to wriggle out of his grasp and yelped when she felt his grip was less tight. At this speed she was too scared to fall from his shoulder if she moved too much.

“Insulting me isn’t helping,” Tyler said in a sing-song voice, a shit-eating grin taking up most of his face. He thought the situation was hilarious and he loved being the centre of attention.

“I’m sorry! You’re not disgusting! Just put me down!” Alessia pleaded, holding onto his jersey for dear life.

“There,” he laughed, helping her get steady on her skates. “See, that wasn’t so hard,”

“I hate you,” she grumbled as she adjusted her clothes and regained her balance.

Tyler gave her a playful eyeroll and held his hand out for her, which she didn’t hesitate to take so that they could skate back to the other side of the rink where Claire had stayed through the whole scene. She gave Alessia an unreadable look as she joined her again, and after skating and talking to them for a while Tyler went back to his team.

“You know…” Claire trailed off for a second, trying to find the right words as she once more noticed Tyler glancing back at them while he was supposedly busy with his friends. “I wouldn’t encourage you to like… cheat on someone, but that guy looks like he’s into you and he’s already a million times nicer than Jordan.” She eventually let out.

“Tyler?” Alessia almost choked on air. “No, god where did you get that idea? I’m sure he’s not interested, and it’s not like I’d be either. Jordan is… I’m with him and that’s not going to change anytime soon. I’d never do that to him.”

“I’m not sure Jordan thinks of you as highly as you think of him,” She watched as her friend shut her out once more, so she held back a sigh and tried once more to knock some sense into her. “Keep this one around, he looks like he’s a good friend for you.”

He suppresses a yawn, raising a hand from the steering wheel for a moment to rub his eyes, then changes the song that's playing from the speakers. A familiar tune immediately fills his ears, and his lips curve into a wide smile. It's their song.

His mind fills with memories of her and the previous exhaustion he felt is long gone. It doesn't matter anymore that he just attended a premiere of his newest movie last night. It doesn't matter anymore that he got up early to jump on the first plane and fly home, then got into his car right away and set off towards Liverpool immediately without a single moment to rest.

He just has to see her. He has to tell her that he wants them to move in together. It's all that has been in his mind for the past week or so, and he knows he has to tell her about it before he goes absolutely crazy. He prepared all the most perfect reasons in his mind, so she just can't say no. And it's way more important than something that could be talked about in a text conversation.

Whenever he's away from her - and for some unknown reason, especially this last time - he misses her non-stop. Her scent. Her touch. The glimmer of her eyes whenever she looks at him, and only him. The way her lips curve into a smile. The sound of her angelic laugh in his ears. The taste of her lips against his. The delicate, feather-like touches of her fingers against his skin. How peaceful she looks when she's asleep in his arms. How happy she makes him just by existing.

He remembers clear as day the first time he saw her, three years back in a café in London. Looking at her made the entire world fade out in his eyes and he still can't comprehend how on Earth he got so lucky that the only empty table was right beside hers. He accidentally heard what she and the other girl at the table - her sister she was visiting, as Tom later found out - talked about and apologetically joined in the conversation with his opinion on the matter. Two and a half hours later Tom left for a meeting with her number saved in his phone.

Within fifteen minutes he had already asked her if she'd wanted to meet with him with a bold and cheeky text, which then led to them spending as much time together as possible throughout the following eight days she stayed in London - with Tom's job and (y/n)'s primary reason, being with her sister in the way. Then she went back to Liverpool and took a part of Tom with her.

They kept in touch, texting every waking moment, driving everyone around them mad with the constant typing and smiling at screens. And a month later Tom drove up north for the first time, visiting her for the weekend. He asked her to be his girlfriend. She said yes. And they have been in a long distance relationship ever since. It was hard, but whenever they could see each other, it made it worth it.

And now he's going to take it to the next step - asking her to move to London.

His cheeks are hurting from the wide smile that stays fixed for the entire drive as he now drives down familiar streets, leading to her. He pulls into the first parking spot he catches sight of around her apartment block, stops the engine and rushes out of the car, right towards the front door without even glancing at his watch to see how late it is.

Tom takes the stairs two at a time, not slowing his speed for one second until he's right outside her door. He presses the switch of the doorbell, then leans forward, supporting himself with his palms on his knees to catch his breath. From inside he hears the soft padding of feet growing louder, then the key clattering in the lock and eventually the door opens.

(y/n) gasps as her eyes take in those very familiar soft, brown locks. "Tom?" She lets out in question.

The mentioned boy raises his head and their eyes connect right away without difficulty and the dark brown sea of his irises sparkle with a new excitement.

"Hi," he breathes out, getting lost in her sight and smell and sound. She's wearing a plain tank top and a pair of pastel sweatpants, no makeup covering her natural beauty, her hair up in a messy bun, and Tom just knows that he made the right decision driving here first thing after landing.

"What the hell are you doing here?" (y/n) crosses her arms in front of her chest, suddenly overly aware of the fact that Tom is wearing a suit whilst she's in her comfiest clothes, looking messier than ever. "You were at the premiere in LA just last night!"

"I know," he lets out a chuckle. "I drove here as soon as I landed."

"You what ?!"

"Now are you going to let me in or am I gonna spend the entire night out here in the corridor?"

"Sorry," the girl's eyes widen in realisation and she takes a step to the side to let him in.

Tom waits until the door closes back behind him, shrugging off his suit jacket in the meantime and stretching his arms as (y/n) secures the lock again. Then as soon as she turns back towards him, he grabs her waist with both hands, pulling her flush against his body.

"I missed you," he mumbles, lips almost touching hers.

"I missed you too, crazy," she whispers back, a small smile lighting up her whole face as her arms slowly snake around his shoulders and neck.

Tom wastes no time to dive in, catching her mesmerizing, inviting strawberry coloured lips in a searing kiss. Then another one. And another. He just can't get enough. And when (y/n) finally tries to move out of his touch, placing her palms against his chest to gently push him away, his raspy voice breaks the silence again.

"I know I've already kissed you like, ten times, but just like another ten, please."

As that sweet, heartwarming, angelic giggle leaves her mouth, he goes right back in, continuing to pepper her with kisses, this time not stopping at her lips, instead moving all around her face.

"Stop! Tom, stop!" (y/n) wiggles to escape from the ticklish touch of his lips against her skin, but the muscles in his arm tense and keep her there effortlessly.

A minute later Tom eventually stops and leans back, arms loosening around her torso, but it's not like he already had enough - quite the opposite actually, but he knows she's getting overwhelmed.

"Come on, you big teddy bear, let's get you changed, then I'll give you some food," (y/n) moves a hand behind her back to lace her fingers with his, then makes her way further inside the apartment.

Arriving to the bedroom, she lets go of his hand so he can swiftly go to the bathroom whilst she rummages out the hoodie and the pair of sweatpants he left at her place during one of his stays from her closet, and then when they meet up again, Tom pulls (y/n) in for yet another lingering kiss.

With a playful roll of her eyes (y/n) moves out of his touch again, then helps him undo the buttons of his shirt, pushing it down his shoulders before reaching out for the newly found hoodie and handing it to him.

"Get dressed, I'll be in the kitchen," she pecks Tom's cheek before placing the white shirt down on the chair on her way out, trying to leave it as smoothed out as possible.

She swiftly moves around the small kitchen, starting to make a couple sandwiches and a cup of hot tea for Tom - eventually finishing it with his help -, then they sit down on the couch in the living room and she watches him eat. At first she asks him questions about the premiere and he tries to answer, but given that his mouth is almost always filled with food, they soon give up and change the topic so instead of Tom, (y/n) tells about her past two days.

When he finishes eating and places the now empty cup and plate on the coffee table, they are finally able to cuddle, something the both of them have been waiting for ever since Tom has arrived. Their limbs are tangled and his arms are wrapped around her body in a way that makes her feel safer than ever. (y/n) clings into the material of the hoodie as if she's afraid this is all just a dream, one that she doesn't want to end. Her face is buried in his chest and his face is buried in her hair and they both feel like a whole again after a long time of not seeing each other.

The sound of two relieved sighs break the comfortable silence of the living room at the exact same time, signaling how they are still in sync. Nothing has changed.

"(y/n)?" Tom speaks up a couple minutes later.

"Yeah?" Her sleepy voice mumbles back.

"I've been thinking," he pauses, trying to shake the sudden nervousness that he can feel sweeping in his veins. "I wanted to talk about something."

"Yeah?" (y/n) asks again, but this time much more awake, and Tom can feel her body tensing up under a millisecond before she moves a bit further from him to be able to look at his face.

"I think... well, you know, it's not like we're rushing into anything, it's been three years already, but... I've been thinking and came to the conclusion that in my opinion you should move to London. To my place."

The last part of his speech comes out so rushed that it sounds like one long word, and as soon as his voice fades out he already feels much calmer and better. The tension in (y/n)'s body loosens immediately, a slowly forming smile breaking the worried expression on her face, but still she doesn't say a word which makes Tom fall back into the nervosity and he opens his mouth to continue.

"You know, actually, I thought about everything. You should quit your job," Tom jabbers before a frown appears on his forehead and he halts to think back to what he's just said. "Okay, that sounded pretty bad, but you've already talked about wanting to quit it and find something else because you don't like it, and so I thought maybe you should find that something in London so we could be together 24/7. Or maybe I can find some job for you to do on the set of my following movies, or whatever you like, really, I just-"

"Shhh," (y/n) raises her hand to press her fingers softly against his lips in order to stop his slur. "If you would just stay quiet for a moment, please."

She watches with a small grin as his eyes widen and he shuts his mouth, nodding and making a motion with his hands as if he's zipping his lips shut.

In the new silence, the girl can finally let her thoughts wander around in her mind, finding pros and cons to his suggestion. And it's not like she hasn't thought about moving to London so many times before. Her sister's there, Tom's there, and even her family lives in Birmingham, so it's not like she would be further away from them either. And she can't deny the fact that in London there are much more job opportunities for her to find, and a much better chance to find something she actually loves and enjoys. Now she just has to say yes.

What are you waiting for?!, the small voice shouts impatiently inside her head.

She takes a deep breath and looks back in the warm brown orbs that are still watching her with the same adoration as they have been the entire night. "Okay," she mumbles.

Tom's body goes rigid, the fingers that have been subconsciously caressing the small of her back freeze in place, pressed into her skin. His eyes widen even more than before, and he gapes like a fish that's out of the water. "Okay?" He breathes back, afraid that he heard something wrong.

"Yeah, I've been thinking about it too. It'd be nice to move in with you," she sheepishly answers, looking up at him through her lashes.

"Are you serious?" Tom exclaims - a bit too loud and high pitched to his liking, but he's just unable to contain his sudden excitement.

"Yes, I am."

They beam at each other, feeling overwhelmed with love before (y/n) lets out a giggle, shaking her head lovingly at the boy in front of her. "But you're still crazy for driving such a distance while being so exhausted."

"I might be, but I couldn't bare another moment without you," Tom shrugs and before the girl could exclaim against his cheesiness, he swiftly places his hands on her cheeks, pulling her in for a kiss.

When they both run out of breath, they go back to the previous cuddling position, staring out into the distance at particularly nothing as they discuss the new plan more rationally. Tom feels like his heart might burst from the joy and love he's feeling at the moment, he's sure he's the happiest person on the planet.

"What do you think, how long will it take for you to pack everything up?" Tom tilts his head, glancing down at the (y/h/c) haired girl.

"Uh, great question. I have no idea," (y/n) grunts as her eyes travel around the room, already dreading the amount of time it will take her.

"We can start it tomorrow. I'll help."

"Tomorrow?" She lets out a giggle. "You really want to rush this so much?"

"Of course, I've been dreaming about this for too long now, I just want it to happen like right now."

(y/n) shakes her head before leaning up to press a chaste kiss against his jawline. "We can start tomorrow, if you'd like..."

"Nice," he grins wide.

A minute of silence comes over the flat, both of them deep in their thoughts about the near future before Tom speaks up again.

"I have a couple things to do in London during next week, but on Friday I'll come back and help you finish packing and then we can drive back together. For the last time," he mumbles, dreamily staring off in the distance, possibly seeing his words form an imagined picture in front of his inner eyes. "So, during the week you should continue packing and arrange moving out with the landlord and I'm gonna properly clean my place so it'll be ready for you and your stuff."

(y/n) takes a breath and opens her lips to give some corny answer, but before any sound could leave her, Tom continues phrasing his thoughts.

"And then when you pack everything out, we can go and buy new things together. I mean, you can decorate the whole house any way you'd like to. And then it'll officially be ours..." Tom's voice swiftly trails off as he hears a quiet sniffle.

He leans back a bit, loosening his embrace on (y/n)'s body before placing his fingers under her chin to gently make her look up at him. With almost no resistance he can lift her head and his eyes are suddenly able to take in the teary, glistening pair of (y/e/c) eyes and damp stains on the skin of her cheeks.

"Hey, are you crying?" He whispers, worry filling his mind and heart.

(y/n) sniffles again and another teardrop escapes one of her eyes, rolling down before Tom reaches out with his thumb to stop it midway. "No, I'm impersonating a fountain," she snorts, a small giggle leaving her lips. "Yes, I'm crying, dumbass."

Tom just rolls his eyes at her sarcastic answer before pulling one hand back from her body so he could fish a tissue out of his hoodie's pocket and hand it to her. "And why are you crying?"

"Because what you just described is the exact thing I've been dreaming of since I was a kid," (y/n) admits while gently pressing the material under her eyes to dry them before blowing her nose in a clearly unromantic way that makes both of them let out a short laugh.

"Ahw, darling," Tom smiles at her, pressing a peck on the now dry skin of her cheeks. "I'm glad I can make it happen."

"Me too," she grins.

They stare in each other's eyes with intense adoration, communicating through the sparkling shades and colours.

"But like there's no need to plan everything in our future tonight, let's just cuddle for now and enjoy the moment," (y/n) speaks up after a couple minutes with a chuckle. "Though you can continue planning tomorrow when we'll be packing, if you want."

Tom responds with a chuckle similar in amount of happiness, only a bit lower in tone.

"Okay. I like the sound of that," he answers before snaking his hands securely around his girlfriend's body and standing up with her in his arms.

(y/n) lets out a small squeal, immediately gripping his biceps in hope of some kind of support as if it would help if she was about to fall. Tom makes his way to the small bathroom and places the girl down on her own feet so she can start her night routine. They can barely keep a straight face as they brush their teeth, knowing that it's actually going to be an everyday thing pretty soon now.

When he finishes, Tom leans back against the sink, watching the love of his life with an amused look in his eyes as she effortlessly makes her way around the small room, reaching to the different shelves for all the skincare products she uses. Their eyes meet every once in a while, making (y/n) blush and let out a giggle from the intensity of his eyes.

It eventually doesn't take long until she's ready to sleep as well and Tom moves his arms around her once more, lifting her up in the air. (y/n) instinctively wraps her legs around his lower body, placing the palms of her hands on the back of his neck.

Reaching the bed, Tom pulls the duvet back with one hand then gently places the girl down on the mattress. He climbs in right behind her after the shortest moment and immediately wraps his arms tightly around her.

"Good night, love," he mumbles in her hair, enjoying the feeling of its smell fill his nose and lungs.

"Good night, Tom," she whispers back. "I love you."

She only pauses for a second in-between the two sentences, but by the time the last word leaves her lips, she can already feel Tom's body going limp and his breaths become more steady and rhythmical as he finally let go and drifted off to sleep, exhaustion completely taking over him as soon as he lets it. Being beside her, he subconsciously knows that he can finally let his guard down again.

The True Story Of Maxwell’s Silver Hammer: on the limits of transparency, or why you should stop feeding your quarters into the dopamine slot machine

Gather round children, and I will tell you a tale. This story is a hundred percent true. It occurred sometime in my late twenties, which would have been in 2008 or thereabouts. I had just taken the biggest acid trip of my life, eight tabs, but of fairly weak acid, I’m guessing around 400 micrograms total or close enough. Still, it gave me exactly the experience I was looking for. We went to the beach, and as a good friend of mine used to say: “got gay with nature”. Everything had been building to this point. First we took one tab. Some weeks later: we doubled down and took two.. After another month had passed, we gobbled up a four strip. Eight tabs only seemed logical at this stage. And man…

It was exactly how you imagine acid is going to be when you’re a kid. Everything was beautiful and melting and there were colours I don’t even have the words for. The trees were full of fractals, the ground was a river flowing beneath my feet. The sky was bright green. The sand dunes: a brilliant purple. It was like that cheesy chroma-keying effect they used to use to represent drugs in old movies from the 60’s. I even nearly went blind staring at the sunset like some hokey old LSD urban legend. Getting gay with nature? This was a little more than merely getting high with one of your straight friends and perhaps sucking each others cocks and then never, ever mentioning it again, this was… I wanted to settle down with nature and build a whole new life together, I wanted to get married, buy a house, maybe even adopt a couple of children. Don’t laugh, this isn’t fucking funny. We were in love!

Anyhow, acid, drugs, beautiful uplifting experience yada-yada. The thing is, on acid you tend to get these… ideas. Crazy, completely off-the-wall, gorgeously bent ideas. And I had just had a real doozy of an acid thought. “Why lie? Why don’t I just be exactly who I am all the time? Why not be completely and utterly transparent with everyone?”. Now this is hardly some kind of grand cosmic revelation. I think that in most individuals this would have cumulated in a simple but genuine effort to be more honest with the people around them, or maybe simply faded with the trip, but in me…

So let me preface this with a couple of things about me that will make the following point make more sense: 1) I tend to take ideas and run with them, generally off a cliff 2) I am very good with computers. To the point where I am a professional hacker these days (as in I break into systems for a living), but back then I was only a hopeful amateur.

So in me, the way this idea came out was I decided I was going to publish my entire browser history, online, in real time. Every site I visited would be available for the whole world to see, should they wish to, seconds after I had clicked the link. I won’t bore you with the technical details, they really aren’t that complicated -- and neither are they honestly that interesting -- but suffice to say I built the thing. I named it on a whim after a Beatles song I happened to be listening to at the time: “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”. And then it was done. Every link I visited was put in a database and displayed on a web page. It was in the form of a giant, constantly growing list, newest at the top. For general purposes of convenience, I had colour coded everything. So all social media sites would be say, purple. Wikipedia would be blue. News was green etc.

So one great and terrible thing about LSD is it has a way of teaching you things. This generally happens while you are tripping, or maybe afterwards when you re-integrate the experience. In this case, acid had decided Maxwell’s Silver Hammer was the to be the terrible form my teacher took. And boy howdy, it would certainly teach me some lessons

So I told all my friends about it. And they told their friends. And then word began to spread. And so I embarked on this slightly weird experiment in radical personal transparency, bouncing down the road like a complete asshole with nary a care in the world, full of hope in the promise of the dream, but I was to very quickly to discover it’s limits…

The first limit should have been the most obvious one. Porn. At the end of a hard days labour avoiding working, I liked nothing more than masturbating for a solid three or four hours over the choicest and rarest sweet-meats the internet had to offer, before eventually collapsing on my bed from sheer sexual exhaustion. The thing is… porn is a very personal thing. I mean: what really spins your wheels, what you get off to. At the time, I wasn’t ready to admit to my friends that I still really liked women ok but sometimes when the mood struck me I liked to watch some massively hung black dude plow a white guy around half his size while fantasying that it was really m… Anyhow, porn is a deeply personal thing and can show quite a lot about someone. Besides, what if my Mum was watching… or my female friends? Sweet jesus.

Well, if I was going to be consistent, I could either “rock out with my cock out” as we used to say back in primary school, or I could stop watching porn altogether. And that was the first lesson. Perfect transparency means constantly worrying about how you look because everyone can see everything. It means censoring, not just what you say, but who you are. it wasn’t just about porn of course. Maybe I should browse some wikipedia so I can look a bit more intelligent? What would the chick I had a crush on think if she knew I kept on visiting these horrible gore sites day after day? And so on and so forth, forever.

I had thought it would be liberating, to be free of all secrets. In fact, it was the exact opposite. I wasn’t living a radically transparent life, instead I was an actor, just playing at performing one.

The second revelation came in the form of the colour coding. I could see myself reflected in a sea of purple. It was obvious I had become obsessed with social media, particularly facebook. Constantly refreshing my homepage, hoping for that next sweet lick of dopamine, another little like on my post, a little sliver of ice from the great icicle of validation that would only ever melt away in the heat of the morning sun. I used to be a meth addict, and it’s exactly the same, that is: it’s never enough. You’re a fiend for it. It had revealed something deeply narcissistic and petty about myself that I really did not like. Why was I doing this? What did it matter? Did I really have three hundred “friends”? Of course not. I had the usual amount of people I cared enough about in my life to see on a semi-regular basis, a few close, ten or so I saw fairly often, maybe thirty total counting colleagues and co-workers and assorted demi-friends and vague acquaintances. The whole thing was fucking ridiculous.

The third lesson came only after both of these things had been grating at me for quite a while. After this synthesis, suddenly, I became enlightened. There was a lot more freedom to be had by not being famous or observed. Privacy wasn’t just a haven for the liars and the hypocrites. In fact, privacy enabled you to be most truly yourself. Sure, be honest where it matters, but you don’t need to put your every card down on the table all at once. Seems like a basic enough thing to realise, but I really had to get slapped upside the head pretty hard to see it. There is a power in being invisible.

So I took down the site. Deleted my facebook. Watched all the “black tops white“ gay porn my little bisexual heart desired and, ironically, stopped caring so much what other people thought about me. Don’t get me wrong, I still get that little rush of validation when someone I respect likes my shit, but you gotta pick the individuals who’s opinion you’re gonna care about. The vast majority of most people are either dumb as fuck or completely antithetical to my values. Which isn’t to say I exactly begrudge them, but I’d still much rather avoid getting myself in a public fist fight, metaphorical or otherwise, unless I really really need to. I think in most cases, power doesn’t need to be confronted, it can simply be routed around. You don’t go and deliberately blow your weed smoke right up a cop’s nose, instead, just go get high in the disabled toilets like everybody else. I mean: it’s what they’re there for!

I guess that is the real moral of the story.

Mark really didn’t know how he ended up here. The clock to his left reads something past one-am, there’s an almost empty (but not quite) bottle of vodka clutched tightly in his hand as he’s singing at the top of his lungs to ‘breaking free’, a delightful quintet by himself, Renjun, Jaemin, Ten and Johnny. None of them able to be classed anywhere close to sober at this point and if his mum ever found out they would be in an indescribable amount of trouble. Mark’s small eighteenth get together had turned into a full-blown party where a solid ninety-eight percent of attendees were either drunk out of their mind, high off the ground or both. They would be so, so dead if this wasn’t fixed before their mum came home.

But, as luck would have it (for Mark anyway) apparently the moment the music switches to a remotely sexy song, that’s the cue for his friends to start grinding on one another, as if Jaehyun and Doyoung having been missing for the last forty-five minutes wasn’t disgusting enough, their dancing was borderline pornographic and Mark was not in the mood. Especially not as he was feeling more single than ever, it was beginning to feel like all of his friends were coupled up – including Donghyuck who’d been dancing (luckily appropriately) with Heejin from is literature class, all night long. So, yes, Mark was feeling great. Hadn’t he been called back inside with the exact promise that this wouldn’t be happening? Mark was not having it tonight; he was very much ready to continue his drunken state and find someone to make out with himself. His choice of the night, making it seem like he had multiple options besides the game of thrones superfan from his maths class which he isn’t sure how ended up here and the generally creepy boy who’d been harbouring some sort of crush (borderline obsession) with Mark since they’d met a few years ago and once again Mark had no idea how he ended up here, maybe it was because he doubled up as a pizza delivery guy and he just didn’t leave afterwards, who knows. Nonetheless, Jungwoo was in attendance due to being Marks old maths tutor just a couple of years ago who Mark happened to have developed a small, harmless crush on. Jungwoo was cute, he was kind and sweet and always looked out for Mark – sure Mark would never harbour any actual feelings for him but that wasn’t necessarily the point of tonight. Mark wanted distracting, no longer wanting to having to force his eyes away from watching Hyuck dance with Heejin and watching her look just about ready to kiss him, no Mark did not want to watch that.

Thus, his attention turned to Jungwoo, dancing, making out, continuing to drink with Jungwoo. His hands slipping under the elder’s shirt as they danced, Mark leading them out of the swarm of bodies up to his room. Heaving chests and heavy breathing filling the room as they kissed against Mark’s bed. Frantic movements, gasps of one another’s names as they moved against each other. Intoxicated by one another – getting lost in each other. Maybe it was the vodka and whatever other concoctions Mark had been consuming all night but this felt easy, it felt simple. No complicated love confessions, just a ‘hey, want to dance?’. Mark liked simple but simple did not like him, hence the I’m-in-love-with-my-best-friend-who-isn’t-gay. Not exactly the simplest of things. Yet Mark made do, kissing Jungwoo distracted him from Donghyuck. Distracted him from the way Hyuck’s eyes were lined with a smoky eyeshadow and made him look beautiful, or the way his hair was currently dyed blond and god Mark didn’t think he could get more ethereal yet here he was proven wrong again. Or the way that Hyuck smiled at Mark, particularly under the warm glow of the sunset as he’d arrived, the light bouncing off of Hyuck’s cheekbones and Mark having to hold back from the urge to reach out and kiss him, instead Hyuck wishing his ‘Markie’ a happy birthday with a quick, quaint kiss to the elder’s cheek – Mark felt like he fell in love all over again. He could practically feel his soulmate mark burning, how he longed for this to all be some childish prank and things would work out and him and Hyuck were really soulmates, not just some wild fantasy.

“Mark,” a breathy moan, “we’re drunk, m-maybe we should slow down.”

“Don’t worry Hyuck, it’s fine.” And well shit, that just happened.

Jungwoo was quick to push Mark off of him (understandably so), muttering ‘I knew it’s’ and ‘I should’ve knowns’. Mark frantically apologising, attempting to defend himself until I simple, stern “Save it,” filled the room. Jungwoo left, grunting a “happy birthday” before slamming the door and maybe Jungwoo was right, Mark really should’ve known. Where did he think making out with a guy who clearly liked him but everyone (bar Donghyuck) could see the way Mark looked at Hyuck. Mark felt guilty, trying to force feelings and realising that he can’t do easy-breezy when he’s in love with someone else, he couldn’t keep kissing other people pretending that they were Hyuck.

Apparently Satan was feeling awfully generous tonight because as there was knock at his bedroom door and Mark was hoping, or rather praying that it was Johnny or Renjun or Jaemin or anyone besides Donghyuck, Donghyuck’s head appeared around the door, his collarbones visible from the attractively loose white button up he was wearing drooping down against his shoulder, revealing more and more intoxicating sun-kissed skin. Mark whined internally, it was his birthday, can he not breathe for five minutes?

“Hey, you alive in here Markie? I caught Jungwoo rushing out the door, when I asked him what was wrong, he called me a bitch and told me to ask you.” His voice lilting at the end, a half question, half statement.

“Shit, sorry Hyuck, he got the wrong idea and we sort of ended things quickly – he didn’t give me a chance to explain.”

“Ah, no worries, you know I’ve been called worse.”

“Shouldn’t you be with Heejin?”

“Lucas and Johnny are attempting to send everyone home; I think Injun and Jaemin are staying and taking one sofa and the same with Jaehyun and Doyoung.”

“Didn’t feel like walking Heejin home?” Mark didn’t mean to sound so bitter; he just didn’t want to get caught up in Hyuck as he usually did. He refused to look at the younger, meaning Hyuck changing into Mark’s joggers and t-shirt went completely unnoticed – probably a good thing as Mark was feeling very weak and exposure to that kind of beauty is not good for his heart.

“No. I wanted to come and cuddle my best friend on his birthday? Stop being so grumpy and shove over, I’ve missed my snuggles.”

And so, Mark let him climb into bed, let Hyuck nestle his head in the dip between Mark’s shoulders, hands wrapping themselves around Mark’s bare torso. Thank the lord Mark was so drunk he was on the verge of passing out.

The late morning sun always made things seem more beautiful to Mark. Slithers of light streaming through the cracks in the blinds always made everything seem hazy, softer and more delicate. Golden rays flickering across them, allowing Mark to register their changed position, now laying on his back with Hyuck curled into his side, looking tiny in the way he’s tucked himself underneath Mark’s shoulder. From this angle, Mark can see the way Hyuck’s long lashes cast shadows across his freckled cheeks, fluttering as Donghyuck slept.

He could feel his heart pounding against his ribcage as Hyuck’s breath tickled against his exposed stomach. Mark’s hand running through his impossibly fluffy hair, the blond suited Donghyuck, he’d always admired his tendency to mix things up with his hair colour where Mark just stuck with black, albeit it was technically dyed to the inky jet black it was at the minute. Mark could stay here forever, his hands cascading through Hyuck’s hair, admiring Donghyuck’s beauty, makeup or bare faced, Hyuck was unique and just beautiful. His fullsun. He was cute when he slept too, all pouty lips and features softened.

It still hurt, sure, how could it not?

It was sweet, the way he felt in these moments but it was also dark and bitter. It made him feel whole, at home and warm inside but it broke his heart, physically pained him to know he was holding onto someone who wasn’t his. A bitter sweet love story. Mark let his eyes flicker shut, allowing sleep to consume him again, an escape from the real world.

“Hey, Mark? Are you awake? Get up you lazy arse!”

“Go away, Renjun.”

“It’s like two pm, isn’t your mum back this evening?”

“Shit,” Mark sat up as quickly as he could without jostling Hyuck awake, “I’ll be down in a minute.”

“Ah Mark, lovely for you to grace us with your presence, how’s the hangover?”

“Jeez Jaehyun, do you have to speak so loudly?”

“I’m literally speaking at a normal volume?”

“Too loud. Shhh.”

“Markie!” Mark hissed as Johnny’s voice radiated across the room, far, far, too loud for someone with a hangover, “aspirin and water for my baby’s first hangover,” Mark snorted at that, “okay, your first hangover that I’ve witnessed.”

“So, Mark, what did I walk in on?”

“What are you talking about Injun?”

“You, shirtless, Donghyuck wearing your clothes, clinging to you like a koala bear? I smell boyfriends.”

“How do you smell boyfr-“

“Shut up Jaemin.”

“The moment he heard Jungwoo had gone upstairs with you he said good night to Heejin you know? When he saw Jungwoo rushing out he looked about ready to kill him, what happened?”

“Me and Jungwoo may or may not have been making out and then I may or may not have moaned Hyuck, very, very clearly. And, for fuck’s sake guys, we’re not dating.”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. I believe you,” Renjun’s attention quickly turned back to his phone when he didn’t get the answers he wanted, “oh shit.”

“What now Injun?”

“Mark you need to make sure Hyuck doesn’t look at his phone, that updates blog has posted that he’s gay – they say they were told so it was obviously Heejin and not being able to understand getting rejected. Oh my god, what if his parents find out?”

“Mark? Mark! Mark, come back we need to talk about this!”

He’d run back upstairs as fast as he could, there was no way Hyuck had slept through the commotion going on downstairs – no matter how hungover he was. Any minute now Hyuck would see the tweets, people commenting on how it was obvious, people commenting on who he thinks Hyuck’s dating. Most of them being Mark. Mark being gay wasn’t any kind of secret, everyone (generally speaking) knew that he was, he never hid it, he made out with boys at parties, he had multiple pride pins on is backpack and what-not, sure he wasn’t screaming it in the cafeteria like Ten used to, openly talking about how much he wanted ahem, body parts, of one’s older brother – yes, Mark will forever be scarred for life by Ten and his invertedness to socially inappropriate conversational topics.

“Hyuck, you up?” Mark didn’t need to ask the question, he could see Hyuck sat up on his bed, scrolling through his phone.

“Why do you look so panicked Mark? I’ve been on twitter and it’s whatever, if my parents see it I’ll just deny it, like always.”

“They’ll really believe that you’re telling the truth?”

“No, but they won’t know I’m telling a lie.”

“Sorry? Did you just say you are, you know, that you are that?”

“Don’t act like it’s so taboo Mark, besides I don’t want to discuss my sexuality with you. I better head off, mum’s been asking what time I’ll be home,” Hyuck got out of bed, picking up his own clothes but not removing Marks, grabbing one of Mark’s hoodies as he walked over, stopping just in front of him, “I hope you had a nice birthday, whatever happened with Jungwoo you can talk to me when you’re ready,” another gentle kiss to Mark’s cheek, “see you later Markie, I’ll text you.”

Mark was left blushing and well-and-truly flustered, the typical after effects of Donghyuck.

A/N: ello Sarah here. I know they’re kinda out of character I’ve never write Jamie or Charlotte before so I apologise. This does not follow any plot in any of the books. You can read this and even if you only read half of the first book. This whole ‘case’ that they’re working on isn’t real. I was just stringing a case together based on the ten words seen above.

I realized two very prominent things as we slipped into the loud building, that Holmes’ Forever Ever Cotton Candy perfume was nauseating in close quarters and Y/N was wearing clothes three sizes too small. With Holmes’ ‘Hailey’ get up and Y/N’s outfit combined, we passed as obnoxious teenagers.

The bar itself was rather dark. From what I could tell a teenage girls party was taking place. Y/N found this out hours ago and made me ruffle my hair and force me to sag my pants. I fit in with the crowds of carefree teenagers just as well as she did in her awkward tube top.

“Come on Jamie, lets flirt with some strangers for information. She won’t be jealous.” I narrowed my eyes at her. “Don’t act so shy it’s not like Charlotte’s paying attention” she said giving me a sly smile. I grit my teeth and glared at her. Holmes payed attention to everything and Y/N knew that. With a wink she twirled away, already blending in with the other girls in the bar.

I groaned inwardly and pinched the bridge of my nose. Holmes was a handful by herself, adding Y/N into the mix was just tourture. I know we needed her though. She was subtle and could move through a crowd like it was water. Also her hacking skills had saved our asses on numerous occasions. Holmes was the brains, Y/N was the eyes, and I guess that makes me the braun. Fantastic.

“Hi!” Someone exclaimed grabbing onto my arm. I raised an eyebrow and turned to face a tall redhead. She was grinning from ear to ear and I groaned inwardly again. Damnit.

“Hey, I’m Jack” I said remembering my aliases. I wasn’t Jamie Watson, the idiot trailing after two genius women, I was Jack Markens a socially conscious and cool young man.

“I’ve never seen you before Jack” the apple haired girl said drawling out the name as if it should affect me. I played into her flirting and forced myself into looking her up and down with a stupid smirk on my face.

“I’m just visiting some friends.” I said flattening my English accent even more. I didn’t want to take any chances in fucking up my already paper thin aliases.

“I hope nothing serious?” She said twirling her red hair around her finger. I wasn’t going to stand here as she clung to my arm and say I didn’t think she was attractive. That being said she was the kind of girl old Jamie would’ve trailed after. The kind of girl I would’ve done stupid shit for. Nowadays I only do stupid shit for two very specific girls.

I looked around in a way I hoped was casual, “I’m never looking for anything serious.” Her eyes widened in delight as she pressed herself closer to me. God I hated myself.

“Well in that case Jack, let me show you around. I’m Roxie.” She said in a sultry voice. I smiled in amusement at her name.

She tugged at my arm and dragged me to a rowdy table full of teenagers dressed and acting like idiots. Roxie squealed and ran over and hugged a blond boy, I cleared my throat awkwardly.

With a loud ear splitting ring of interference, the piano bar hushed as everyone stared at the stage. A younger man smiled sheepishly as he moved his microphone around trying to fix the problem, a clipboard clutched in his hands.

“Well sorry about that folks! Now that I’ve got your attention, I'd like to make some announcements. Today is two very special ladies 18th birthdays: Georgia!” The crowd cheered looking to a girl in a big dress and a tiara. Roxie screamed loud enough to irritate my ears, at I assume her friend.

He waited until everyone settled down and looked at his clipboard. “And Hailey!”

We were in the bar for maybe twenty minutes and in the time Holmes had managed to become quite popular with the other parties juvenile acting friends. They shouted just as loud for her and I looked around trying to find Holmes and Y/N.

“We’re going to be doing something a little different tonight. Please welcome one of our birthday girls and her best friend onto the stage!” The man yelled again and the crowd yelled back again. I furrowed my eyebrows as Roxie grinned at the blond boy and dragged him over to a group of girls. I took that as my que to leave and I shuffled back slightly trying desperately to get away from all the screaming girls.

Holmes and Y/N scrambled into the stage, with an eccentric bow Y/N shimmied to the piano bench and sat down. Holmes embraced her ‘Hailey’ persona and grinned at everyone. She accepted the violin the man handed her with a blush and a giggle. These two were going to be the death of me.

“Sorry for the strange request, my name is Y/N and this is my best friend Hailey. Hope you enjoy us!” Y/N said into her microphone with a wink in my direction. The crowd exploded at the two pretty women on stage. With a nod at one another they started to play a duet. I couldn’t help but wonder when on earth they managed to practice songs together, just the idea of them alone in the music room made me uneasy.

As they played the bar transformed into a carnival. The throbbing lights spun like a merry go round and the once unwelcoming sent of sassafras seemed to melt into a sweet aroma. Holmes looked right at home on stage and I stopped for a moment to watch her. Y/N made eye contact with me again and raised an eyebrow in warning.

I cleared my throat and remembered our carefully crafted plan:

1. Mingle

2. Y/N and Holmes will play

3. In our different vantage points we’ll look for any meaning behind the mask logo of the bar that was spray painted in my room with braille engraving underneath it

4. Maybe have a few drinks

That last one was added by Y/N with a grin. She kept trying to get us all drunk, much to my misfortune and Holmes’ annoyment.

My mind wandered to when I stumbled into my dorm room to find the threatening mask logo spray painted in a cherry red colour. Someone had hacked away, “we’re all mad here” in braille on a chunk of wood under my desk near it.

Y/N figured out the mask was the exact same as the logo for this piano bar and here were were. Trying to find a connection to the Alice in Wonderland quote as well as the break-ins throughout our terrible school.

With everyone busy staring at my only two friends, I slipped to the back of the room. It was quieter back here and the beautiful lights and music didn’t follow me. Taking out my phone I scanned the crowded wall trying to find anything that resembled braille or red spray paint. Hell even a Cheshire Cat would make all this mean something. The wall of stickers was mainly bullshit companies and photos of past patrons. I sighed deeply, but continued to search the wall.

I followed it into a back room. The lights were off and I crouched down just in case anyone was to burst in. I figured through the filing cabinets looking for anything that related to Alice in Wonderland.

Who knew that a theif was such a damn Disney fan? I sighed and sat against the wall as I searched through the files.

Holmes and Y/N burst in both after a few silent moments. Both a little sweaty with matching grins on their faces. They rushed over to me and I stood up quickly to meet them.

“We found out absolutely nothing, but had a good time and that’s all that matters.” Y/N said doubling over as she gasped for breath. Holmes’ glittery outfit shimmered from the lone windows light and her grin melted off her face.

Charlotte Holmes in all her impassive face, was back.

“Did you find anything?” Holmes asked me as she tugged on the bottom of her mini skirt. I blinked at her, momentarily distracted.

“Uh no.” I said crossing my arms. Holmes sighed and started to look around the room. Y/N caught her breath and stood back up smiling smaller now.

“Should’ve seen us Jamie—” Y/N was cut off by footsteps and voices echoing from the hallway.

“Hey who turned on the lights in the back room?” It said and the footsteps started becoming louder. I looked at Holmes in alarm and she looked back momentarily frozen.

Y/N looked around frantically and decided jumping out the damn window was the best option. With little time to waste she yanked it open and dived into the alleyway. I winced as I heard a small yelp from her.

Holmes and I looked at one another as we scrambled to follow her and with only seconds to spare we both leaped out the window as well.

I crashed to the pavement and groaned as I landed flat on my back. Holmes has rolled as soon as she hit the ground and stood gracefully afterwards.

“Took you guys long enough.” Y/N smirked resting against the wall in the grimy alleyway. I sat up and shoved her and she responded with a delighted laugh. She cradled her wrist and Holmes looked down at it.

“You most definitely sprained that.” She said making Y/N shrug. I shook my head and moved to sit across from them against the opposite wall.

“Gotta admit it looked cool though.” Y/N said with a grin. Holmes and I shook our heads at her eccentricity.

Holmes crouched on the pavement with a small magnifying glass in her hands. Y/N leaned against the brick looking casually down at her phone. I knew better than to assume she was scrolling through Instagram. With a few almost bored taps, she disabled the security cameras facing the alleyway.

“Watson what do you make of this?” Holmes asked her voice completely calm for someone who just vallied out a window. I sighed and looked to where she was pointing. The loading dock at the back of the piano bar was clipped shut. Pink hazy graffiti covered it in what I can only assume was a flamingo. A thin line of red paint was hastily painted over an awful path of rust.

“Someone tried to fix their rusting problem and then made a flamingo?” I said completely not trying to be helpful. Y/N smirked down at her phone and before cocking her head at the wall.

“Ohh, I thought it was a weird melted bright pink gun.” She said crossing her arms. She grinned while looking back at me. “This is why you’re the right hand man.”

Holmes looked between us with a deadpan expression. She cleared her throat and turned back to the wall.

“The oxidation down here was covered by the red paint. This red paint is the same pigment and, I suspect, the same used in Watson’s dorm.” Holmes said standing quickly and started rummaging through her Hailey bag. Y/N crossed her arms.

“So? It’s covering a line of rust not a secret door.” She said looking at me with her eyebrows furrowed. I shrugged my shoulders and looked at Holmes to elaborate. She stopped searching through her bag and with a wince pulled out a pocket knife.

“Let’s look at what’s underneath.” Tossing the bag to the ground, she pulled the knife open and started scratching at the paint carefully. After a few silent minutes she brushed away the paint dust to reveal a decent sized hole in the wall.

She blew more paint away to reveal braille above the opening.

Y/N laughed as she knelt down to look at it. With careful fingers she ran her hand over the metal braille on the top of it. The braille very closely resembled the one carved into the underside of my desk.

I looked closer and ran my fingers over it too. Holmes sighed and took out her phone to take pictures of it.

“I wonder.” Holmes mumbled to herself and started to reach into the hole in the wall. I couldn’t help but grimace as I thought of all the disgusting things that could be in it.

Holmes’ posture stiffened as she pulled out a gun wrapped in a plastic bag. The three of us stared at it in shock.

“If I didn’t know any better I’d say there's some kind of controversy going on.” Y/N laughed out before wincing and cradling her wrist again.

Chapter Four: Hau’oli City, so good they named it once

Hi, all, I’m back, and you know what else is back? The “s” key on my computer. Hi, “s” key! I missssssed you sssssso much.

Training time! And it takes about a minute in the school gardens to work out that that’s the most stupid place I could possibly be training my pokemon right now. All the pokemon there are either dark-type pokemon or magnemite, and I don’t have any pokemon who are good against either.

Instead, it’s time to go back to the beach. The entire time I’m there, the song where Nicki Minaj sings “let’s go to the beach, beach, let’s go get away” plays on repeat in my head, but only the bits of that song that I know. So, just that line that I just typed out. You can imagine how thrilled I am by this development.

Thanks largely to the fact that I’m less proud of her nickname than I am of the others, Celine McQueen the Slowpoke has thus far been my least used pokemon. Since she’s now my only water-type pokemon, though, I begrudgingly decide she could do with not being level five any more. And you know what that means! It’s time for a TRAINING MONTAGE!

The beach of route one, on the outskirts of Hau’oli City. The early morning light just barely starting to hit the sand. Slow pan stretching from the quiet, empty building of Professor Kukui’s laboratory to the huge rocks blocking the entrance of Ten Carat Hill, visible in the distance. Only when we reach this point can we see our hero, Pokemon Trainer Tori, walking towards the camera. With all six of her pokemon lined up behind her to create a dynamic arrowhead formation, it is clear that she is striding through the tall grass and looking around with a purpose. As we watch, we can hear that the sound of Nicki Minaj saying the words “let’s go” has been stretched out for as long as could realistically have been expected, in order to fill the atmosphere with suspence.

Suddenly, Pokemon Trainer Tori points to the right of the screen, and the camera zooms back out - keeping Tori on the left side of the screen the whole time - until the picture is a wide screen with Tori on one side and a wild wingull on the other, with Tori still pointing at the wild pokemon. Tori can be seen to say something to her pokemon; though the exact words she says are inaudible over what is now a pounding, fast-paced bass line, the eagle-eyed viewer might just be able to make the words out to be “Celine! Obliterate her!”

Tori’s slowpoke, Celine, bounds forward between Tori and the wild wingull, but stops early enough that she is still just about on the left half of the screen. Again, we hear Nicki Minaj say “let’s go” - still very drawn out - but with the bass line continuing, a new sense of urgency can be felt under her words. The battle starts with the wingull using water gun, a jet of water bursting from the wild bird’s beak with such force that it actively pushes Celine back to the far left of the screen again, stopping by Tori’s feet. Celine momentarily flinches, but shakes the water out of her face and tries to attack. However, all she manages to do is yawn, and the wingull quickly flies away.

Cut to Tori and her other five pokemon; though Tori is in both the middle and the foreground of the shot, the focus of the camera is still on the pokemon. All five simultaneously facepalm, a particularly impressive feat for Digit Al the magnemite, whose only limbs are horseshoe-shaped magnets. (At this point it’s clear that, for the purposes of narrative satisfaction, we should ignore the fact that yawn is actually one of slowpoke’s most useful moves.) Tori puts up her hand though, and all at once the camera sharply focuses on her and the music cuts out for just long enough for us to hear only her when she opens her mouth and says, “No.

We can train her.”

The moment these words have left her mouth, the screen explodes into a quick succession of scenes - Wash the pikipek learning to smash rocks on a wild alolan rattata; Digit Al shocking a wild wingull; Jabba the grimer biting a wild slowpoke; you know, really inspiring stuff like that. The passage of time is demonstrated as the scenes progress by the daylight gradually becoming brighter as the morning breaks. Over the top of these images, we hear Nicki Minaj finish the line that we’ve been hearing her start to sing this whole time; “Let’s go.... to the beach, beach, let’s go get away.” The line has been remixed, though, into a powerful and enthusiastic tune in the spirit of … well, the pokemon theme tune, for want of a better comparison point. In particular, the words “go get away!” seem to be echoed by a higher-pitched voice, yelling the words so passionately that the viewer might be tricked into thinking they have some kind of hidden meaning.

As the scenes flash by, we can see Celine watching from a few steps by and becoming more and more animated in support, so much so that in the last scene before the montage ends - Hedwig the rowlet tackling a wild yungoos - Celine almost appears to be tackling the yungoos right next to him. And then the montage has ended, and for the second time, we’re looking at a wide-screen shot with Tori and Celine on one side of the screen, the same wild wingull from before on the other. In fact, the framing is almost identical, but this time the lighting is much brighter, the bass line is steadier, and Celine is visibly more confident.

Finally, we hear Tori shout, “Celine, use water gun!” And there it is - the move that Celine the slowpoke has, in many ways, been preparing herself to use for all her last half hour or so. The stream of water cannons out of her mouth, noticeably stronger than the one that wingull used earlier in the day, and pushes the wild wingull clean off the screen.

Cut to Tori and her pokemon again. Her pokemon cheer; clearly, we are now meant to ignore the fact that water gun isn’t a very effective move to use against a wingull. And Tori’s face slowly turns into a confident smile, and she simply says,

“We’re ready.”

Fin

Now, I had to use a potion on Digit Al in the middle of that training montage, but all six of my pokemon are already looking pretty unhealthy again. That’s what you get for refusing free healthcare, folks. Though I’m budgeting my potions pretty tightly, I decide I can afford to use up two potions before the battle with the principal. One goes to Hedwig, who is still the highest levelled pokemon on my team; the other goes to Celine. I must confess, in making that last decision there, I have cheated just a little and used my memory. You see, I have this suspicion that when I talk to her, the principal will give me a short speech about how important it is that I learn how to use type advantages in battle, and to demonstrate her point, one of her pokemon will turn out to be the starter pokemon who has an advantage against mine.

And hey, who has two thumbs and is 100% goddamn wrong? This gal! So much so, in fact, that the person I meet on the second floor isn’t even the principal - she’s just a regular teacher, and her pokemon are a magnemite and an alolan meowth. I end up having to use another potion during the battle owing largely to the magnemite taking an age to wear down, but to be honest, I completely overprepared for this one. The battle is over, and the teacher has taught me a valuable lesson: my memory can’t be trusted! Yaaaaaay!

The teacher gives me a bunch of great balls, which I’m sure will come in handy soon enough, and then I meet Ilima, everyone’s favourite gender-neutral captain. Then a message comes over the tannoy system letting everyone know that my lesson is over. Can you imagine going to a school where an announcement is made whenever any individual student has finished a lesson? You’d have gone deaf by the end of the week.

Then I go into Hau’oli City, and I won’t bore you with too much detail. Here are the highlights:

Two people, one on the street and one back in the school, handed me potions out of nowhere. I was feeling chuffed about that, until they quickly got one-upped by the revives and super potions I found/was given later on. Made the potion-givers seem like cheapskates, frankly.

Took some pictures of a pikachu and some rockruff because I damn well could.

Got to the first place where I can actually spend money without breaking any rules (the clothes shop), panicked, and just got everything with the colour blue on it.

And then I went down to the marina and met Team Skull! Man, I love Team Skull so much. After six generations of being expected to care about wannabe terrorists while still beating them at every possible turn, it’s so refreshing to play a game where even the NPCs act like the baddie team are the most minor nuisance possible.

There’s only one thing I can do. I go up to Hau’oli cemetary on route two, seek out all the solemn mourners that I can find, and beat up all their remaining pets until my team looks the slightest bit more battle-scarred and cool.

Top Ten Captain America Costumes in the MCU

Argh, it’s Sunday morning and I haven’t written anything! That doesn’t usually happen! Right, it’s time to just bang something out without any degree of care or attention just so I can get something up as soon as possible.

In truth, I’ve got quite a few ideas for the next few weeks, but they all require a bit more finessing and long-winded waffling than I have time for right now, so I’m going to scratch an itch that I’ve had for a week or two. I read a list online (yes, I read other lists) on the exact same topic that I’m covering today. Now, I normally don’t like doing that; if I see a list of, say, favourite Pop Tart flavours, I might start compiling my own mental list, but I don’t want to be seen as derivative or plagiarising (not that anyone would really care unless I lifted the list wholesale, of course, but I’m me and I’m weird), so I tend not actually write that list. I think it’s happened once or twice, because the topic has piqued my interest; but very often in those cases I sort of shelve the idea and work on it and make sure that my list is different. Anyway, long story short, that’s what’s happened today too, except that the process has been accelerated. Basically, I read a list online about the Top Ten Captain America costumes, and I disagreed with it so much I wanted to do my own, and so that’s what you’re getting this week. And they’re all illustrated via the medium of toys!

Hopefully next week I’ll actually get round to doing one of my other, more interesting, more time-consuming lists. We shall see!

Anyway, suit up, Avengers Assemble, on your left, etc, etc, etc.

Avengers: Endgame (2019): pretty much ticks all the boxes: suitably comics-accurate; good-looking helmet that shows off Chris Evans’ face to a flattering degree; cool fingerless gloves; straps and padding give it a utilitarian look without making it look super-armoured; maintains the stars-and-stripes motif without it looking like a fancy-dress outfit. Also, crucially, it has a really cool mesh-style effect across the breastplate, which echoes the mail/scales on his comic outfit.

Captain America: Civil War (2016): superficially close to the Endgame outfit, but there’s a bit too much going on in the chest department. They’re very close at this point, but some elements still come across as a bit too busy.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015): very, very similar to what came later – it’s clear that they’d settled on a style at this point that worked well. But I’m not fond of the coloured segments coming out of the star emblem, and actually I feel the white stripes on the arms are a bit distracting. The simpler, more utilitarian look of the later costumes is better.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): I guess the first three are all variations on a theme, and this is where the differences come in. here we have a suit that’s supposed to look like it was developed eighty years ago, so it’s a bulkier thing, with more overt padding and strapping. As a result, I think it looks a bit weighty and top-heavy, but the design is great, and as a “1940s Cap” outfit, it’s excellent. No wonder they pulled it out of storage for Winter Soldier.

Captain America: The First Avenger – modified USO outfit (2011): this is what Cap wears when he goes AWOL to rescue the POWs during the movie. He’s wearing his gaudy USO outfit, but pulls on some combat pants and a bitching leather jacket, and heads off into battle. There’s a really cool Indiana Jones/The Rocketeer vibe to this outfit, and it’s excellent. The only reason I don’t prefer it to the standard First Avenger duds is because it’s not really a Captain America costume, is it? It’s like when he’s fighting in his civvies in Winter Soldier. But it’s still cool.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018): basically the costume from Civil War but modified; he loses the helmet and the star from the chest, significantly darkening the whole uniform. He also roles up his sleeves and – in a crucial addition that really makes the whole thing sing – grows a sexy beard. Feels a bit too dark and moody to be proper Cap; and I guess you could make the argument that he isn’t Cap at all at this point. But still, solid look.

Sam Wilson, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021): this year saw the debut of a new Captain America in the form of Sam Wilson. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a very good show that occasionally skirted genuine greatness, and spent most of its runtime teasing the inevitable debut of Sam as Cap. His suit, when it finally debuted, was cool enough, although there are various areas that annoy or detract; it’s fair to say its reception was a mixed as the show itself. On the plus side, well, it’s very comics-accurate, it definitely looks like Cap, he’s got cool wings, and the colours and design are mostly good. But for me it’s a bit too bulky, and there’s too much white on the top half. It’s more pronounced when seen in motion in the show itself, but it does detract from the overall look. I think Cap’s suits on film tend to work better without the segmented colours on the arms, and like I say I’m not keen on how white the top half is, so if they add a bit of blue to those areas next time round I think it’ll be genuinely excellent.

The Avengers (2012): when this suit first debuted, I thought it was excellent, but time has not been kind. I think the feeling was probably that Cap needed a “superhero suit”, something fairly sleek and modern to contrast with the bulky forties design. But it ends up making him smaller, and the form-fitting mask does him no favours. The colours are probably a bit too bright, we’re segmenting the arms again, and the thigh zips and those weird panels on the shoulders are very distracting. At least his arse looks good in it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014): mixed bag this one. On the one hand, lots of design decisions made that there way into later, more refined, versions of the costume. The sleek-but-reinforced, padded look, that marks it as a modern interpretation of the First Avenger costume, is established here; as is the more practical helmet, and fingerless gloves. But it’s such a serious, sombre uniform; all dark blue, with no red and white tummy stripes. The pronounced silver stripes beside the star are doing a lot of lifting to make this seem like a bold, interesting outfit, but it’s not quite enough. The basic ideas were there, but it needed brightening up a bit. However, it did fit the film and tone perfectly.

John Walker, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021): I was torn here. There are, by my reckoning, eleven different Cap suits across the MCU (not counting when he was wearing the time travel suit in Endgame). So here I had to choose between John Walker or the gaudy costume Steve wears in his USO shows in First Avenger. Reluctantly, I chose Walker, as the USO suit really isn’t a good look for fighting crime (or Nazis) in; too skin-tight, not armoured, and the fit of the mask is terrible. Also I’ve sorta-kinda-half covered it when he straps on Indy’s jacket and rescues Bucky and co. Even so, Walker’s Cap outfit isn’t great; far too dark, with horizontal red stripes across the chest, a segmented “A” emblem on the breast that appears to be some sort of button or clasp, and the whole “A-within-a-star” on his helmet is a bit daft. However, it definitely works, because it’s just a little bit wrong; the colours too dark (even the red is more blood-red), the broken-up patterns of the clashing horizontal and vertical lines… even the fact that his helmet doesn’t seem to fit right, making his face pudgier and his ears stick out more. I think this is all deliberate, to discombobulate us, to make us know that this Cap isn’t right. In all these respects, I guess it’s a success. Unlike Walker himself.

i miss the exact shape of their face, the different expressions for the different emotions… i miss the over the top theatrical faces when singing along to a song, i miss that weird little crinkled up laugh when they get caught off guard by something stupid that’s somehow also genuinely hilarious, i miss the little lips parted falling asleep face that lets me know i should make sure we get into bed asap, because falling asleep on the couch makes their neck hurt but once they reach a certain point they get too sleepy to willingly go to bed…

i miss when they’d let me in and tell me the things that were troubling them, so i could tell them how i saw it through my eyes, to tell them like, hey, don’t be so hard on yourself. i miss being there for them, because they’re my favourite person, too good a person to go through half the things they do

i miss how hard they try, like, socially. like anyone would say their charisma is effortless, but they’d share a funny joke they thought up with me like twenty times, and i could tell how rehearsed it was by the time it reached a stranger’s ears, and somehow that would make it even better. how proud they’d be when they come up with something clever, sharing it with me.

i miss their interests, even all the ones that don’t overlap with mine, because you can tell how much they care about them. i miss when something that’s apparently interesting happens in hockey, and they’ll spend the next ten minutes showing me the video over and over, giving me a play by play, just as engrossed by it the first time they play it for me as the fourth time they’ve rewound to a certain point and gone “look at that!!!!!!!”

i miss how much they care about knowledge and little facts and stuff - how well they tell them. even if i already knew the fact (which i do about half the time) i let them explain because i love the way they explain it.

i miss how i can tell they’ve picked up a new interest, because they straight up say they’re going to do that now. they give me updates on it. i love it. it’s like, “I want to be someone who likes anime” - then it’s all about this anime, all about that anime, they just watched all of death note and told me the whole plot, they were so engrossed in it. hey, we’re going to watch sailor moon now! we’ve gotten through three episodes and it’s like “this is my favourite! she hasn’t even shown up yet but she’s my favourite! who’s your favourite?” and “we need to cosplay sailor moon characters next year!!!!”

and i love how they’ll pick up something new and like, IMMEDIATELY be comfortable using the terminology for it, and talking about it to others. like i have to study absolutely everything about something before i’ll say anything about it, because i don’t want to seem stupid. but like, maybe a week after i told them about makeup? we were in sephora and i was looking at new and different foundations, and the associate was helping us out, and a foundation colour matched pretty damn well, and my partner was like “yeah, but what if it oxidises weird?” and i’m like… you’ve really got my damn heart soaring over using the word “oxidise” rn…

i miss when they’d get super confident in how they look, and spend like fifteen minutes in front of the mirror. i miss all three of their selfie faces.

i miss how good they are at driving their jeep - i always think we’re in too tight of a space to turn, or about to hit a wall, but they know their car and they know how to drive it, and it’s honestly beautiful. plus, they really care about that car, and so do i. her name is Jane (after jane’s addiction) and when she got new tires i was told i had to tell her her new shoes were pretty
