A short ramble about Booktok / Booktube and it‘s way of showing readers.
I don‘t want to offend anyone with this post but as a young person who has been reading since years in a time when reading was not really considered 'cool or aesthetic' I wanted to say a few things about the reading community especially on Tiktok. I do like the fact that especially Booktok gets people into reading again but I do have some issues with the way the creators do it.
It‘s kinda funny how suddenly everyone on Tiktok / Youtube is promoting reading books so you can be a 'hot girl' or 'interesting person'.
So, first of all, you are probably only going to be a 'hot girl' / 'interesting person' if you read exactly those books you can find on Booktok / Booktube. Every other book is not good enough and almost everyone promotes the same books that are literally all over my For You page.
Second, there is almost always a certain reading aesthetic subconsciously included in those videos. But honestly, there does not need to be an aesthetic for reading. For me, reading means, sitting in my bed in my Pyjamas, perhaps some tea next to me and that‘s it.
I‘m not reading for the aesthetic.
I‘m not reading to be a 'hot girl' or 'interesting'.
I‘m reading because I actually like the process of reading, because I like diving into the storylines and falling in love with the characters.
But ironically, these seem to be the exact things which are not important to the booktok community.
Also, the constant telling of what you have to do, to be a 'true reader' almost drives me insane.
So I just wanted to tell you if you‘re a reader:
You don‘t have to read five books a month to be a 'true reader'.
You don‘t have to follow a certain aesthetic to make reading more 'appealing'.
You don't have to force yourself to read the books that are considered 'books that you must have read in your life'.
Read as much or as little as you like and feel comfortable doing so.
Read the books that you are interested in and you think are worth to buy for yourself.
Check out books in your library and buy them once you read them, if you are unsure if you really want to buy them straight away.
Make yourself comfortable for reading and don‘t force yourself to read only for the sake of reading.
Read what makes you happy.
And not what other readers expect from you.

Other Characters: Mark | Renjun | Jeno | Jaemin | Jisung
Genre: Angst
Word Count: 902
You closed your eyes and let the music carry you into another realm, where everything felt safe and happy. When you opened your eyes and came back to the present, Haechan placed a glass bottle on the floor between you and the rest of Nct Dream. It felt like Haechan was only looking at you, only placing the bottle down because of you. Your tongue suddenly felt thick in your mouth, and not just because of the alcohol drying your saliva. Instinctively, you reached out for your boyfriends hand, to find that he was already reaching for yours.
"Are you okay?" Chenle whispered, leaning in until his mouth was close to your ear. "Say the word and we'll go home."
You could either tell the truth, or you could lie to the one person you trusted most in the world. You didn't want to be afraid of anything, not when he let you around his friends, but when you looked across the circle and looked into Haechan's eyes, you were terrified. You swallowed with difficulty.
"I'm okay." you said. "Let's play."
You choked down more alcohol to wet your mouth and braced yourself. Haechan spun the bottle first. The sound of glass on wood seemed to grow louder and louder, right in tune with the blood rushing through your veins. The whole time you kept your eyes on Haechan, the challenge dancing in front of your eyes like a flame. Chenle squeezed your hand when the bottle stopped in front of Jeno.
"Truth or dare, Jeno." Haechan said.
"Truth," Jeno said, holding up his can of beer in salute. "Why are we playing this game?"
"You don't get to ask the questions," Haechan said. "Now, tell me the truth. Is there anyone in this circle you sometimes don't like?"
"No." Jeno said.
You looked around at each face: Haechan, Renjun, Jisung, Mark, Chenle, Jeno, and Jaemin. No one was looking at you right then, not even Haechan. You were the only girl in the bunch, the only girlfriend of a member. Everyone liked you, but there was always something about the way Haechan interacted with you that felt a little off. In the beginning, you thought your relationship with him was similar to a rivalry. Lately, it had seemed like something else entirely.
"Liar," Haechan said. "Shall I spin again?"
"It's getting late." Mark said, burping loudly. "Excuse me."
Chenle laughed. "Disgusting."
"Why don't you spin the bottle?" Haechan asked.
You didn't have to look at him to know that his gaze was on you. The question lingered between everyone, moving through each body like a ribbon. Jaemin, looking bored, sighed.
"Leave her alone." Chenle said.
"Scared?" Haechan asked, raising his eyebrows. "Of me?"
"Never." you said.
You raised yourself to your knees, the wooden floor creaking beneath you, and grabbed the bottle. Your eyes were boring into Haechan's as you spun it from the middle, sitting back down and not daring to watch where the neck pointed.
"Jisungie." Renjun called.
"Truth or dare." Haechan said. "But since Jeno picked truth, you have to pick dare."
"Why?" Jisung asked. "Why?"
"Those are the rules." Haechan said, smiling mock-sweetly.
"I don't want to play." Jisung said.
"I'll take the dare." you interjected, feeling bad for Jisung. "I spun it, I'll take it. I'm not a coward like you Haechan."
Chenle leaned over and kissed your cheek. "That's my girl."
"Okay," Haechan said. "I dare you to kiss me. On the lips. In front of your boyfriend."
"What?" you asked. "No."
"We all know you have a crush on her," Chenle said. "Too bad she only likes handsome people."
"Don't do that, man." Mark spoke up. "Haechannie, don't make things weird."
Haechan raised his arms. "Why not? I like a little fun."
"Haechan." Renjun warned.
"This isn't fun." Jeno said, taking a swig of beer.
All the while, your eyes were still glued to Haechan's. You couldn't look at Chenle, or at any of them. It was just him and you caught in a game of cat and mouse.
"It's just a game. A harmless kiss." Haechan said. "Unless you're too scared to be one of us. I'll understand."
"Fine," you snapped. "A kiss. A part of the game."
You looked at Chenle, at the surprised look on his face. You didn't know if you were waiting for approval or not, but his expression wasn't changing.
"It's just a game." Chenle repeated, seemingly more to himself than to you.
You looked back at Haechan and his smirk, got up from the floor and crawled to him. The whole room fell silent as your lips were just inches from Haechan's, the fruity smell of his breath caressing your face.
"Is this what you wanted?" you whispered. "How do you feel now that you'll have it?"
You kissed Haechan with a closed mouth. His soft lips touched yours and all you could think about was how much you had grown to hate him for making you feel so much angst. Before Haechan could grab your chin and bring you in for more, which you wouldn't have completely hated, you pulled away. You looked back at Chenle and saw him getting up from the circle. You sat on the floor and watched him walk out, feeling you had messed up a good thing.
"Ask me how I feel again." Haechan whispered. "Because I feel so damn good."
