Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina Review

Oh boy, where do I start?

So, this random movie from my childhood that nobody talks about just popped in my head one day and to be fair, I always thought this film was a mixed bag. I was a little too old for it at the time and I knew it had some charm to it and it was entertaining in some spots, but a lot of parts were just frustrating and easy to make fun of. But I never understood why it rubbed me the wrong way besides the animation. So, let's take a deep dive into this obscure movie, shall we? But, before I talk about the negatives, I do want to say one wholly positive thing about the film. The voice acting is the real highlight. That's it, I guess.

Story

I'm tired of running....

All I can say is... it left a lot to be desired. Lazy, rushed, and undercooked. It has potential, don't get me wrong. It's a refreshing take to have Thumbelina being abused and taken advantage of for her size, but they don't do anything with that concept after the beginning. I also don't understand why they had her be born in a little people village instead of just having her be born in the flower like in the story and then kidnapped. It just feels pointless. Hell, a lot of scenes in this movie is pointless.

Look, I'm not a scientist or expert on physics or whatever but I don't think that boat should be going backwards after it spent all that time going forwards.

I would've liked to see Thumbelina run into similar obstacles she has had her whole life throughout the story of being taken advantage of, studied, experimented on, and abused. Instead we just get human trafficking, like you might as well just go all ham if you're gonna have shit like that in there. It would've at least made the emotional core more powerful.

The action scenes are anticlimatic and full of deus ex machinas and surpise motherfuckers and conveniently shaped lamps. It's like the story doesn't know what it wants to be. One moment it's dark and disturbing as shit and then the next, it's more diabetic than many Disney films.

And Tom Thumb's story is just... I got nothing. I will explain more in the character section, but there's literally nothing interesting about his story because he's more of the deuteragonist to Thumbelina's protagonist, which is not an excuse but whatever.

As a couple, these two have little chemistry. They are the generic enemies to lovers trope and are only drawn together due to their similar lives, except Tom Thumb mostly grew up happy. The reason for their conflict in the first place made no fucking sense. The movie just wanted an excuse to have conflict and that's it. And then all of a sudden, they are now everything to each other, despite fighting 5 minutes ago. There's so many inconsistencies to this movie, it's insane, and I will explain more in the character section. If you really wanted to have conflict between them, maybe develop their (at least Tom Thumb's) personalities more? Maybe his optimism, cheerfulness and naivete clashes with Thumbelina's cynicism, pessimism, and depression. And through their journey, they learn and grow together and learn to help each other overcome their weaknesses. Because the film really doesn't have much character development and whatever little development they do have is pretty rushed.

And wtf was wrong with the script in this film? It looks like it didn't even get past the first or second drafts. There's wording in there like "you irrigate me" that sound like typos, it has all the things a script shouldn't have while also having the skeletons of a good movie. They even broke the show don't tell rule near the end where Thumbelina starts monologuing about how hellish her life was and that she gets to make her own decisions and then points out the whole mother like daughter bs like stfu. WE ALREADY KNOW THIS MOVIE! And WHO TF IS GOING TO CARE THAT A YOUNG ADULT WANTS TO MAKE HER OWN DECISIONS? And then the movie starts convoluting itself by revealing that Tom Thumb was arranged to marry Thumbelina all along (I thought this was a simple kids film?). Of all the writing mistakes this movie has, I thought it would have the decency to avoid those shits.

Most of the jokes are more contrived than funny, even one involves a poop joke.

Characters

None of them are anything special, to be honest. But I will start with Thumbelina.

She has all the makings of a great character. She’s strong and compelling, but she’s also a very flawed character with a lot of vulnerability. If you know me, you would know that these kind of characters are right up my alley. Spike Spiegel, Rick Sanchez, Shadow the Hedgehog, the There is No Game guy, those are all characters that have trust issues and hate people at first but their hatred belies a sense of loneliness and sadness which they all overcome once you break down their barriers. So, what went wrong here? Well, it’s the fact that Thumbelina doesn’t really have any significant growth regarding that. She doesn’t even seem to go through any trials that tests those weaknesses in order for her to grow. She meets Tom Thumb literally 30 minutes into the film, they fight a bit but a minute later, they fall in love. I also don’t think that they handled the depth of her character well.

Then why are you smiling?

She’s actually kind of a bitch, she bitches about losing some grass game despite her being too small and weak to win whatever the fuck it was, she yells at a frog, she yells at the lady bugs who ask her who she is and Tom Thumb, who she just met and has done nothing to her and she runs away from him, and then suddenly attacks and insults his height. So, does Thumbelina want to find another tiny person like her or not? Now, I do think these kind of interactions could be written well, but something is missing here. It feels out of left field. I could probably buy this a bit more if Thumbelina was abused by everyone all her life, but she had friends, so why was she so hostile to these characters for no reason?

Then stop looking at him funny!

She's also a victim of the constant pointlessness and inconsistences of the film so one minute, she Princess Peaches the mole and then the next, she's calling Tom Thumb a thing despite him being the EXACT same species SHE is and ALSO yells at the ladybugs about it earlier in the film.

All in all, she’s alright, she’s definitely the most developed and best character here, but I think they could’ve done better to make her more likeable and consistent.

Tom Thumb

Two-dimensional. The fact that he has no backstory to explain his personality unlike Thumbelina tells you right then and there how shallow he is. The movie mentions that he somehow escapes the circus, but we don't know how. If that's the case, then why did Thumbelina stay there all this time? Again, you could've had the exact same problem even with her escaping because all her life, she has encountered many different people bullying her and taking advantage of her, which would make the story and her character much more powerful. Considering how headstrong she is, I thought she would've taken that route a long time ago anyway and not just because someone told her where her village is. Also, if you're not going to develop his time in trafficking, then why not just go with the original story and just have him be adopted. He also feels out of place in his world, but in contrast to Thumbelina who was gaslit all her life, his caring role models can tell him that there are others like him somewhere in the 7.8 billion people in the world. He also has a bit of an emotional scene with his adoptive father where he has to leave him, but this is never elaborated on at all. Nor do we see Tom Thumb struggle with this. It's just another excuse for the movie to get the plot going.

Mole King

Disturbing af. Blud gets told about some pretty girl in the forest and then hits on her, point, blank, and a period. No conflict about her age, looks, personality, nothing. Take into account that Thumbelina is probably like no older than 19, it's so uncomfortable to watch this old ass incel obsessing over someone who's barely of legal age at best, complete with all tickling, touching, rubbing, and feet fetishes, too. And even going full on Bowser when she is taken away from him. And for no reason either.

In the third act of the film, he does explain that it's because they're both rejects, but how is Thumbelina supposed to be a reject in any way? She was just someone who was easily abused and felt out of place, but she was never ostracized by anyone. I take it that the mole is just an incel who wants any pretty young thing considering this one lady mouse also dated him. His song is good, but still, it's all about him hitting on Thumbelina and it makes no sense regardless.

Mole King's Minions (cuz I don't remember their names and don't care)

Mostly unfunny. They get their out of character moment when they refuse to capture Tom Thumb as the Mole King says so, despite him being their fascist. They make one stupid decision involving two split paths and they both decide to go down one path at the same time and I was like "BRO HOW ABOUT YOU TWO FUCKING SPLIT UP!" and they get reasonably cockblocked.

Three Ladybugs (cuz I don't remember their names and don't care)

These little fucking shits are annoying as all get out. Their entire existence is to make fun of and bully Thumbelina for no reason yet somehow treat Tom Thumb like a prince? What? Is this supposed to contrast things or something? It's so weird.

What do you think you are, hypocrites?

Clingy Bird (cuz I don't remember her name and don't care)

Can't fly for some stupid reason. Apparently, she was captured right after she hatched, but she's clearly an adult, so why she still can't fly, I don't understand. Like literally, a 4 year old can come up with a better fucking reason for a bird not flying than this. And then she starts crying because she thinks Thumbelina isn't her friend when, gurl, you only met her for 2 fucking minutes and you're already worrying over whether or not she's your friend?

Roman

The first villain of the film who came and went. Kind of a cartoonish villain who gaslights Thumbelina into thinking she's the only one of her kind. He captures two babies who happen to be the titular characters in a village where there are plenty of other babies around, what makes Tom Thumb and Thumbelina conveniently special? Oh yeah, because movie. Also, why does every Russian/Portuguese animated character have to be a ball of fat? I mean Gru from Despicable Me and whatshisface from Coraline...Mr. Bobinsky was it?

Dexter

Another villain who came and went. Some science kid whose parents are so ignorant he messes with ether. He's another cartoonish villain who wants to kill his captives because... he's evil, I guess.

Ben

Seemingly a nice guy, but then shows off his inner boomerism by making Tom Thumb fly the coop just because he's of age and he's apparently going to die soon. We don't know if he suffers from any illness or what, the story just wanted to take a sudden turn, I guess.

Thumbelina's Parents

Wish they got a little more attention if they were going to bring them back. Shouldn't they have been working hard to try and get their kid back all these years instead of just standing around doing jackshit? Like go gather up a search group or something.

Animation

I think it will appeal to kids. It's colorful, expressive, and fluid, but it also feels sloppy and unfinished. Like one scene had the characters talking without their mouths moving. It also just looks like a 2005 Newgrounds Flash game, I don't really have a problem with this on paper, but it just goes to show how sloppy and aged the animation is.

Music

I think the music sounds nice and catchy. But the music also falls flat because either the story writing is bad (Welcome to My Hole), the lyrics sound bizarre and tune unfitting for the context of the scene (One Two Cha Cha Cha) or it just sounded kinda bland (I'm All Alone).

Overall

As a kids film, I think this film will do a good job at charming little kids. It's dumb fun (not in a good way, tho) and bright and colorful. But I don't think kids over the age of 9 (around the age I was when I watched the film) would give a fuck. You're better off watching the Mario Movie if you want a fun simple animated kids film about a young girl being forced to marry an ugly bastard and it also has a song about it too.

I give The Adventures of Tom Thumb & Thumbelina 5.2 bells out of 10

I was considering giving it 4.9 bells because of how bad everything was, but I just have to give it a little more credit because there's clearly effort put into this. It had the skeletons to be a powerful movie. On paper, the female lead is compelling and relatable, the theme is emotional and heartwarming, the crossover premise was always interesting, the music sounds catchy, the animation is charming, there's a bit of comedy in there... but they all fell flat due to the execution. I really do feel bad for the makers as it seems like the movie had a really hard time. From what I gathered on research, the movie has been in the making since early 1999 at latest and was completed by the end of the year. It had legal issues with Disney. I can tell how small the budget is just by looking at the writing and animation, and I think Disney, who distributed the film, didn't finance the project enough. That, and they were probably crunched for time. It's really painful how underwhelming this film was.

You know what? This post has the same energy as disfigured people unironically starting their own “I Am Not A Witch!” campaign over The Witches remake even though that movie was terrible and a slap in the face to Anjelica Huston and should never have been produced in the first place. Disregarding the fact that the source material already has it’s issues while GDT has been implementing disability in his narratives throughout his work since the start of his career but apparently people only started paying attention after he won an Oscar?

Like, do we think that this person would feel significantly dehumanized if they found out that the spawn of The Creature from The Black Lagoon also happens to be Australian and loves sports? Or if they knew about this, would they suggest Monster High as an alternative to consuming adult media?

Do we think that every single disabled person who ever threw a fit over The Shape of Water would feel significantly dehumanized by this?

I’d say 50/50.... Since I once saw a slam piece for The Shape of Water written by an adult disabled person whom unironically and in all seriousness compared Princess Ariel ( a protagonist from a G Rated Disney Film) to Elisa Esposito (a protagonist from an R-rated Adult Flim) just to argue what a twat Elisa supposedly was throughout her movie and of course how she should’ve ended up with Strickland and how Ariel was supposedly the better “Representation” out of the two women, because Ariel ended up with a human....... I think I vaguely remember how this adult disabled woman who was possibly in her 30′s or over, also openly wrote about about how she was certain Princess Ariel would be able to “Kick Elisa’s Ass” in the event of a hypothetical fight between the two fictional characters.... Because that’s a very mature and nuanced way to criticize film. While the irony of how The Shape of Water at it’s core essentially is just an underwater retelling of Thumbelina (if we’re going to be bringing Jodie Benson into this) was basically lost on this women throughout her entire article.

Wake could be Elisa and The Amphibian Man’s own son, overall having ... a body... like that... for as much as we know .... ^_^;

I have my gripes about the way Wake’s story was handled in that episode (since we’re dealing with Monsters it could’ve been something so entirely different even though it was more of the same; infantilization bad, blah blah... boring, safe, story only written to teach ables and that’s the main problem. Same “Special Episode” every decade. Even at Monster High where the main protagonist that started it all is the daughter of one of the most disabled coded monsters of all time and her limbs can and will friggin detach themselves from her body on a whim which is also the main focus of her character intro:

Like okay, we already have a fish man in a wheelchair at Monster High: A franchise with a fandom that has already accepted Greta as a Trans Icon TM.

But God. Fucking. Forbid. God Forbid, if some little girl who also happened to have Ectrodactyly or some other limb disability were to see herself in Greta and want to play with her? That poor delusional thing would just be dehumanizing herself, now wouldn’t she?

And what if that girl also happened to be trans? Even worse!

Yeah, I need to know where all of my crippled monster lovers are at because it’s the cold takes like the above that are actually so tiring for me to have to read and listen to. Over. And Over. And Over Again.

The person who made the bad Shape of Water review is a freaking paralympian for a living. So clearly a biased jocks perspective and not a horny goth’s.

The OP above phrased what they’re saying as if they don’t enjoy horror at all. And I know that they’re are some people who interpret Monster High as an “alternative” to “Actual Horror”...

(Like dude? The original Gremlins designs already had three fingers and this is already way toned down as per usual, with Monster High Dolls? You really want a girl with a limb disability to have this potential representation be taken away? In favor of just giving Greta fingers and hands that present as more “human” or “normal”? Go buy the 2016 reboot and fuck off!)

I didn’t want the Pennywise doll in the first place because of that whole painful scene in the beginning having to watch the little boy suffer and then the whole leper scene.... I did not see the second movie, nor do I really have any desire to.

If I did buy her it would be for my mother and if I did play with her, I would have a little custom clown wheelchair built for her, keep her in it always, and then have more of her personality and accent be based around Tim Curry.

If this offends any of you, I can assure you, I do not give a fuck.

Because reading this honestly made me want to go on ebay and pay a reseller just so Greta can finally have a home with someone who actually appreciates her. (And Gizmo too. And I don’t see any of you throwing a fit over his cute lil’ hands because who thinks like that?! No one!)

I can think of people saying it’s a racist film, because at the end of the day, like yeah, and I can definitely understand saying The Witches in general is ablest among other things, including the shitty shitty remake, even though I think that people could’ve picked a better name for their protest than a Christine O’Donnell quote...

But, I’d never thought I’d see a white person claiming that gremlin hands were actually ablest, no less on a fashion doll that’s been drastically toned down from it’s source material.

This is the same level of asinine bullshit as someone claiming that Operetta’s existence “felt ablest” to them because The Original Phantom of The Opera was disfigured... So discarding the fact that Operetta was the offspring of a literal ghost in this incarnation, I guess OP was offended by the fact that Monster High let a disfigured outcast of a man find love and fuck and then let his equally disfigured daughter attended their school.

But going on both these peoples logic, are Jackson and Holt not already considered ableist and dehumanizing because Systems exist?

Are Peri and Pearl not already considered ableist and dehumanizing because conjoined twins exist?

What they already did to Ghoulia in the reboot is a literal can of worms so we won’t go there right now.

I just thought of another thing going by this logic though: Do we feel as though Garret Sander ever felt significantly dehumanized by the Werecat or the Grady Twins because he is a twin? Of course not!

I really gotta hand it to the dipshit in the above screenshot though because they made me see this Greta doll in an entirely new light now: Not only is she a Trans Icon for Monster High, she’s also another Disabled and Disfigured Icon in Monster High.

And I was going to suggest this as a Halloween prompt to make the wet blankets who think that Greta’s existance is an ableist hate crime even more uncomfortable and angry by drawing Finn Seducing Greta, getting to her heart through Gizmo and singing his exact favorite song, only of course replacing the words “willing” with “wheeling” .... And then just have all three of them having a private little dance party together which ends with Greta covering Finn in kisses ......But if any one did want to use my idea for an art prompt I can assure you that I wouldn’t be stopping you.

Okay, so uh .... Update.... Remember how I said that the person who made the above post made me so angry I could just pay a reseller and get it over with? Remember how I implied in my last post regarding someone else being a complete loser about Greta, how collecting was all new for someone like me and money was no object? Well, in the spirit of speaking about something not stopping us ....

Here are the pretty babies, safe at home with someone who actually loves them, taken off the hands of someone all business and no cutesy bullshit or faked Mattel purchese price markups whatsoever in item description, only actually purchased by me once completely sealed shipment box was shown to be physically in dude’s hands, pre-checked by me personally via youtube before actually placing order just to ensure said box was real and that other people were already receiving their shipments from Mattel Creatioins that quickly (it was and they were) and so my actual buy was shipped to me within 48 hours of my order with constant UPS tracking updates from ebay... Considering how I see people in these tags every other day who like to be calling these Skullector Dolls “shitty customs” and I paid little more for this Greta than I do when I find a OOAK on Etsy that I really do admire, I claim that this was a really fair exchange. Not “good” of course, but fair.

I honestly just wish the money that I paid for one of her “Customs” in this case was actually going to Rebecca Shipman herself considering how many ungrateful shits some of you have been to this woman for giving you the Skullectors series.

But why pay extra in the first place, you ask?

Well, besides fact that Greta Gremlin is worth it the first place, I’m going to paint a picture for you:

Imagine being someone who uses a wheelchair and a hand splint, and having your caregiver claim that they’re going to help you, but then all they do is hijack your own card, tilt your own computer over to their side, and then proceed to read your own credit card info out to you like as slowly as humanly possible, number by number as you’re attempting to type that in with one hand while your hands are shaking as it is already and your computer was tilted to one side for some reason and no one offering to actually help type for you. Now imagine if you’ve already flubbed up the whole “I Am Not A Robot” thing two times prior to this and realizing the irony of how the one test getting you through to payment, but one that you knew in your gut you were going to lose her on, is the one test asking you to “identity stairs”.

Now imagine how the sense of powerful irony and rage you feel, carrying around the knowledge of how you lost Greta Gremlin because you metaphorically had to climb up a pair of stairs in order to be allowed to access her .... Is tripled coming across some absolute ding bat whining about how disgusting and ableist Greta Gremlin supposedly is for being born having three fingers, exclaiming how she’s “Monster Highs 1st Ableist Doll11!!1!!1!1!!!11 n no 1 iz goin 2 caaaaaaaaaare... :’(″

When a character..... like Pennywise.... canonically exists in this universe.

This post seriously had me livid and the abled-bodied autistic 19 year old who wrote it should be ashamed of themselves, but I’m grateful that this display of absolute dingbattery from an adult teenager with a Jojo icon gave me the extra push that I needed to spite some of you ungrateful bitches before Christmas.

I really just said “fuck the stairs” and took an elevator. I already got the BeetleJuice one, retail price on Mattel Creations, first try (cause I had someone helping me type then).

I was not going to just give up Greta after that especially not after seeing some of you guys’ appalling behavior regarding this doll.... And I know I’m definitely not as spoiled as some of you grown adult Cheapy MCcheapskates who whine about having to pay $60 while tearing apart everything about these dolls anyway when you know that it’s just Rebecca and her team who are essentially building you these gifts from scratch to be able to even afford the reboot. One of the reasons I didn’t get into Monster High as a teen is because since I refused to settle for a shitty android, I couldn’t actually afford my own iphone until I turned 25, meaning my first ever phone that I own now is the iphone SE 2020 that just came out last year, just for clarification if some of you think not having a phone in that era wouldn’t effect anything or make someone feel left out. Why buy dolls if accessing extra perks and features required a cellphone? Why buy dolls that reminded you of how you were too poor to afford a cellphone?

I also adore the clearly campier direction these Skullector’s are going in, for the record. And I can’t understand why the rest of you mediocre foamy squirrels keep demanding Jennifer’s Body and Johnny Depp and more pale faced humanoid characters while you’re treating Rebecca Shipman like shit.

I’m as happy as ever with the results of my decision to take this extreme risk and personally I think Finn would be proud of me for choosing to take the “elevator” out of spite to get to Greta after reading That Post too.

Because posts *like that* are the reason why no one takes actual discussions about ableist microaggressions seriously.

okay, i have some feelings about this movie because i was only a little too old for it when it came out, and i did rewatch it a few years ago and it was heart warming, but it unfortunately falls prey to the faults of new barbie movies still, and is therefore lower on the list

this is EXCLUDING MERMAIDIA because that movie is on another level. however this includes the first film and the gay rainbow one. i am not fairytopias biggest fan, i found it actually pretty boring when i rewatched it a while ago, even if it does feature bibble. i also dont like that alina is given wings at the end.

i have some nostalgia for this movie. i love the closet metaphor. and the music was nice. i barely remember the plot tho this ranking is solely on Vibes.

love mariposas voice. design amazing. nothing that special abt it.

omfg i love this movie. the musketeers. im obsessed w them. i had the video game on ds as a kid and i cry thinking abt how i dont have it anymore. i hated the cat though.

11. rapunzel

its. ughahg. eh? im putting it this high because of the bEAUTIFUL SOUNDTRACK!!!! also because i have so many positive memories associated w it like watching it w my bff a few years ago and her commentary...lmfao. i love that fucked up rabbit.

10. swan lake

i barely remember this movie but it makes me hungry and i fucking love the costume design and the soundtrack.

9. island princess

omfg okay. this movie. so many thoughts. firstly that the music is absolutely amazing, and i cry every single time i watch this movie. everytime. i cant explain. i cant. the scene where she remembers being lost at sea, and when she reuinites with her mother. i sob so fucking hard. i hate the plot though i think its awful. that red headed woman disgusts me. also that elephant is horrible. otherwise the rating would be higher. ‘i need to know’ is a beautiful duet. and ‘right here in my arms’ AUUAGHAHGHAHGAHGHAHG

8. mermaidia

THIS MOVIE. i love it so much. nori is one of my favourite barbie characters ever, and im obsessed w her design as well as the plot of this movie actually being really fucking good. the design of those freaky little baby mermaids, and their mermaid food? i loved the giant sea snail and her huge Body. alina was a really compelling character in this because of her relationship with nori, and this movie gave us one of the best scenes ever with bibble and those fruit.

7. barbie in a mermaid tale

literally i just have so much nostalgia for this because i was like 10 or something i dont know but something about it like has me in an iron grip. the intro scene, the music, the animation. reminds me of being a kid. sobbing.

6. barbie in a christmas carol

WHEN HAS THIS MOVIE EVER NOT MADE ME CRY. god as a kid i hated this movie because the blonde girl pissed me off but i was totally missing the core message. i cant believe barbie fully told a story about child abuse and neglect, and did it well, making me feel for that horrible woman. but i still cry in that scene where that lady cant adopt the little girl because shes like. totally dead. so tragic.

5. 12 dancing princesses

not much 2 say abt this one! i kind of despise half of the plot but the costume design was amazing, the theme song is . PHENOMENAL. and the love interest was great. also, a talking bird. im listening to the song rn and holding back tears. magical experience.

4. barbie in the nutcracker

CRYING AND SOBBING. so much nostalgia...oahhg man. i want to marry the nutcracker but only in his nutcracker form hes kind of ugly as an actual guy. the theme of magic in this movie is palpable, the dancing scene is absolute ass in hindsight but its one of the first barbie films using computer animation so i can forgive it. its literally just so beautiful. the only complaint i have is that i WISH it had ended in tragedy, with clara fasding away forever, unable to return, but always remembering..i wouldve pissed y pants.

3. barbie and the diamond castle

OKAY I would make this number 2 but number 2 HAS to be number 2 i cannot change it. this movie is just so gay like actually. for real gay. i love the flirting, the touching, the love between the two girls. its also beautiful, i loved the colours in this the palette is so bright and fun. (also the song at the start of the movie makes me cry like a baby)

MY GOD!!! LITERALLY THE BEST BARBIE MOVIE. i wish mattel would go back to its roots of music with violins and cello and anything orchestral instead of droning pop music, because its so so beautiful. lyrically the songs are Amazing, the story is just. literally the best barbie movie story ever like. the themes of acceptance, duty and profound love and friendship. dominiks relationship with erika, julian and annelieses relationship, erika and anneliese friendship and unbreakable bond. the cats as characters!!!! premingers BANGERS????? phenomenal.
