the spiral is the fear of your reality being false. of your mind lying to you. that something is wrong, something is off, that your mind is playing tricks on you

the end is the fear of death, and embracing mortality. that your life is meaningless, that death could come at any time, that you are not safe. that your living is not a given, and it could be taken away at any time

the dark is the fear of the unknown. that a monster or a problem could arise out of nowhere, unseen, and get you. it is the fear of that which you do not know

the hunt is the fear of being chased, of things coming after you and you cannot escape. of being pursued, of your time running out. of the things that you know are there, that will catch you if you do not run fast enough

the flesh is the fear of your body failing. that you are nothing more than an animal. that your body could change, and you cannot do anything about it. that your own flesh is not yours

the slaughter is the fear of the unexpected. that at any time horrors could happen, for seemingly no reason. that you could be hurt, that violence could break out, with no precedent

the desolation is the fear of losing. you burn yourself up to avoid something else hurting you. or you do not embrace loss, but turn that pain outwards.

the web is the fear of manipulation. of people you cannot trust, of the seemingly trustworthy lying to you, tricking you. and of having no control, of being controlled

the corruption is the fear of evil in that which seems innocent. of love that hurts, of that which you do not suspect turning out to be bad. of things slowly spreading, worsening, beginning slowly but taking over.

the stranger is the fear of being replaced. that you are inconsequential, and no one would notice if you were not yourself. or that someone you know is not who they thought they were, that they are pretending, and they will end up hurting you

May I ask, what are the Magnus Institute and the Usher Foundation? I've tried looking at the internet and my own records, but I can't seem to find anything on it. It seems interesting, and I'd love to learn what I can.

The Magnus institute and Usher foundation both work with the paranormal, more referred to as entities/powers/dread powers/fears.

We have an archive with (mostly) written encounters. We have a research department which looks more into these statements/testimonies (and other things they have been assigned to). We have a library with books regarding the paranormal. We also have an artifact storage where we look into and store items containing entities (nearly all of these are given to us in some way.)

The Magnus institute is the only one in UK and located in London. The Usher foundation is in USA with several locations around the country. There are more like us in other countries but I don’t know the names for each and there’s a lot of countries…

I have the usernames to a few working in archives (only Magnus institute), library (both) and research (both) if you’re interested in knowing more about those! I do also have the username for two working in artifact storage Magnus institute if you prefer that.

That tma poll just makes me wish I was motivated enoguh to write my Unfold AU.

Where Jon and Martin end up somewhere else and he's still the Pupil but is trying to hide the fears from Martin. They live at the house on Hilltop road and Jon who is connected to the Eye can feel the entities consuming and feeding other universes. The one that they are at is a gift to Jon from the web so it seems normal, but Jon is afraid that once he succumbs to his own hunger and acts on it its only a matter of time before the rest of the entities start causing damage too.

alright- bare with me because my thoughts are everywhere lol

random various au information:

the fear entites are instead more general gods, much like those from various mythologies (greek, norse, egyption, etc.) like the eye, rather than an entity that feeds on the fear of being watched, is rather the god of knowledge and sight!

all of the gods have influence over the world, some mortals will devote themselves to one specific god entirely, others will become devout to multiple, and some will simply be neutral among all 14 and live life out as they please.

avatars are mortals who have been blessed with power by the gods while creatures (like mr spider, the not them, etc) are simply beings who have been born into the world by the gods power seeping into it. artifacts are items that have either been blessed/cursed by the gods or avatars, or have been affected by the gods power seeping into the world also.

theres multiple sects, cults, and churches for each god much like how many real life religions have different sects with their own rules and standards. some have beef, others do not.

the gods themselves are entirely morally neutral, they have their own interconnected relationships with eachother, and kind of view mortals as pets in a way, picking favorites and seeing them as of lesser importance in comparison to themselves.

since the gods here arent necessarily evil and theyre actually sentient beings, their titles are changed to be more fitting (the mother of puppets -> the mother of fate as an example)

the story is set in an era resembling the early 1900s because idk. vibes are neat i guess

thats all the basic world building crumbs for now, ill go deeper into it when i have more art and story stuff ready!

Jonah magnus is basically eye jesus. thousands of years prior to the start of the story, the eye favored him and he became a messiah of sorts.

the House of Magnus is a church sect of the eye founded in what is now london. but it doesnt operate JUST as a simple church. many sects of the eye devote themselves to gaining knowledge of the world around them and the House of Magnus is no different there. operating with a library, research centre and all. the research not just on history and knowledge, but also the holy and divine. documenting stories that deal with the divine powers and researching cursed/blessed artifacts aswell.

its a common legend that if one tells their story under the eyes watch (either in a church of the eye or directly to an avatar of the eye) that theyll receive good fortune and foresight, and since the House of Magnus has become a well known sect of the eye, many will come far and wide to detail their accounts under its roof

all of this documentation leads down to the Magnus Mythos, a large archive under the church where the written documents are filed, curated and cared for by the head Archivist. as such, the position of Archivist has become a most sacred role among worshippers of the eye comparable to the head of the church itself.

they arent just revered for their care of the mythos (though the devotees of the eye view the care of documented knowledge to be a sacred and ever important responsibility) Theres a prophecy, hand woven by the Mother of Fate herself, one that states an ordinary archivist will one day be gifted by all 14 of the gods and awaken the great change, bringing about a new and blessed age.

but is this newest archivist even ready for such pressure and commitment? and what if the prophecy is more devious than one might think?

The End

Also known as Terminus and The Coming End That Waits For All And Can Not Be Ignored, The End is the fear associated with, you guessed it, death! After all, everything ends. One day, you too will die, and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Your final destination, the greatest unknown, is moving steadily closer. "The moment that you die will feel exactly the same as this one."

Lessons:

Live while you still can.

[Waves like an overexcited mum seeing her child in a school play] Hi Basira!!!!!!

What struck me most about this episode for this relisten was how quickly Jon and Basira seemed to click with each other. These two were on each other's level from the first few lines.

More information about how the Institute works! Makes snese that they'd have thorough policies in place for information control, and cool that Jon is apparently good enough at his job by now to be familiar with correct procedure off the top of his head.

Look at how much effort Jon is going through to reassure her and help her feel comfortable giving her statement! This is such a far cry from his behaviour during every previous live statement he's ever taken. Took him long enough, but I guess he's finally decided to be more lovely.

Look at this! An attempt at levity! This is basically banter. Maybe Tim isn't way off base for thinking these two had something going on. This is definitely the most pleasant Jon has ever been with a statement-giver that wasn't one of his employees.

Always so great when the Archivist switches into statement mode and the statement-giver is like '...wtf do you want me to do now.'

Love this in terms of world-building. There are people who know about the supernatural and basically have the job of sweeping as much of it as possible under the rug, but don't expect them to know what's going on because they don't get told anything more than anyone else ever does.

At some point I'll have to put together a larger post about way that various institutions in the world must have been effected by the presence of the Entites, because its an aspect of the worldbuilding of TMA that is endlessly fascinating to me. Really hope this is something we get some new angles on in TMAGP.

I know a lot of people had issues with the portrayal of law enforcement (and Daisy and Basira's arcs specifically) in TMA and I don't intend to dive super deep into it, mostly because I'm a white woman who has never had any significant interaction with law enforcement, so I probably don't have anything particularly insightful to offer. All I'll say for now is that I think the series does a better job of saying ACAB than some people give it credit for, and we can see that in moments like this that explore 'us versus them' mentality within the cops (especially from the POV of Basira, who has her own issues with black and white morality and loyalty versus ethics).

I really can't imagine Basira being thrown by any amount of weirdness. Do we ever see her lose her composure over supernatural shit?

God Molina's such a fucking moron. What was his plan here? Just walk away from the fire dipshit, don't hang out raving like a lunatic and getting into fistfights.

Haha, Basira is the kind of person who takes welding classes on a whim. She's going to fit in so well with all the autism/ADHD girlies in the Archives.

First off, the tma/hp crossover "Terminus"?

I am SO curious about that one, cause since terminus is the fear of the end and death and everything, I'm guessing it'll have to do with the hallows? And the idea of death as the concept it is in tma being brought into the hp world give me brainworms.

(Tma in general give me brainworms, if you didn't notice the several liveblogs I wrote in, like, a week and how much I was losing my mind writing them. I did NOT sleep a lot at that time, ngl.)

Mate, I understand COMPLETELY and that's why you've hit the nail on the head: it IS about the idea of death as it exists in TMA being brought to the HP world. As well as all the other lovely entites in TMA!

The annoying thing about HP crossovers is that, more often than not, you'll see characters from other works being re-imagined in the context of the Wizarding World. But I don't want that! I want to think about Harry Potter in the framework of TMA! I want to reimagine Hogwarts and how terrifying it is and how sweetly it would feed all the entities! I want to think about which characters would be marked, or would become Avatars and about what that might mean for our story!

Some are easy, of course. Bellatrix is an Avatar of the Desolation if I've ever seen one. Dumbledore is an agent of the Web, as natural as breathing. Luna is clearly of the Spiral or the Stranger.

And Harry, well.

The boy is, at first glance, a wisp of a thing. Narrow shoulders and knobby knees, bird-boned beneath the large jumper that sits oddly and misshapen on his thin frame. The shock of unruly black hair on his head and his bright green eyes only lend credit to the almost fae quality of his movements, stilted yet graceful, like a newborn foal. To her left, a tape recorder switches on of its own accord, and Gertrude frowns. When she looks back, those bright green eyes are looking straight at her. Gertrude is no stranger to piercing gazes, to the sensation of being Seen and Known beyond reasonable doubt. She’s grown accustomed to them -- as much as anyone can grow accustomed to endless voyeuristic terror and paranoia. This is not a Knowing gaze. But there’s certainly something more to it; something that has her biting her tongue, staving off the urge to compel a statement. The boy walks towards her, motions unhurried, head tilted to the side in curiosity. His fringe moves as he does, and she spies the lightning bolt scar cutting through his forehead and brow, just shy of touching his eyelid. Ah, she thinks drily. Of course. The End, then.

Time for what tma entites I think orv characters are aligned with! Spoilers for orv and possibly tma too.

So starting off with our main boi:

Kim Dokja himself. I'm going to have to give him a strong death/the end alignment. The eye could be argued I suppose what with all his knowledge and 'mind reading', but i just feel like the end connection is stronger. Hes expierenced death and rebirth in more ways than just the literal sense too, he first died when his mother 'killed' his father and he was left behind in the wake of that death. And then again when he jumped from the roof, living on feeling more as though a ghost than alive. And then ofc all the actual self sacrifice where he comes back, trying to kill od, the 49% of him wasting away in a hospital, another death. Ofc then theres the thousands of deaths and regressions from yjh that kept him alive. Again and again he is surrounded and made up by death and its ultimate refusal to allow him its grasp (much like oliver).

Next! (Note: I will NOT be going in order bc I don't have ideas for everyone yet.)

Lee jihye is an unwilling avatar of the slaughter and I will stand by that. Her sponsor is a war general and she starts the series by having to kill her best friend in order to survive. In the context of being a slaughter avatar, she tries to combat the need for senseless violence by justifying it, by trying it use it to protect others.

Han Sooyoung is an avatar of the web. There are many aspects about her snd her story that involve levels of control or bring up the question of others frew will (she wrote ways of survival, but she wrote it after the fact, but after the fact was also before the fact so then what does that make of yjh and all the others in her story?) Again, im just contextualizing things in context of tma entities, not actual commentary on orv story.

Lee gilyoung. If you know anything about tma u know im giving him the hive/the corruption. Its stereotypical! Its the obvious chioce! Bug boy gets bug fear! But I think its also the right chioce. When lgy was being possibly abused or neglected by his family memeber, he had his bugs. Sound familar? To literally all the hive statements. Its rotting filth but its also there when you have no one and are alone and it will love you when no one else will. And for that love it will consume you.

Jung Heewon is a strong woman who has been hurt before. Because of this she took up a mantel to be the fires of justice. Thats right, we're looking Desolation aligned here. Incongruence with the namesake of lightless flame, her fires offer no mercy. Things were taken and stripped from her before kdj saved her, things she can move on from but can never get back. So she will take away from those who have taken from her, who will take from her. She is the type of avatar that feeds the desolation with her own fear. She is afraid, so afraid of loosing so she will burn it all down until theres no one who can take from her again. I especially like how her judgement time or smthing power starts as out of her control to being in the control of her and kdjc. Bc in either case you cant really say either side is correct. Only that they have the power the decide, and they have always backed her when she wants to use her flames.

Lee Hyunsung. The Burried, or Too Close I Cannot Breathe. You cannot make any decisions deep in the ground, held tight by the earth in what is either a loving or unforgiving brace. Everything down to breathing will be decided for you, there is no room for mistakes or lose. Throughout the story lee hyunsung struggles alot with descion making, he wants to be told what to do, he can follow orders. Hes got a big heart, but hes tough, he can stand his ground and weather it all, just like the earth. I would link the type of avatar lee hyunsung would be to the statement in which a graveyard digger becomes obsessed with burrying himself alive and sleeping. Lee hyunsung could find comfort and saftey in the dirt.
