Just as you planned, you were on your weekend getaway with your new boyfriend. You’re on your way to a lake house that’s a couple of hours from your city, and you’re both excited. At least you are. But from the looks of it, Suguru is excited too.

“Okay… Once upon a time there was a princess.” You begin, and you allow him to continue the story. You’re bored and playing car games, because the music got annoying an hour into the trip.

After debating about it for a minute, he decides to let you sleep. You still have an hour of the roadtrip left, and keeping you entertained will be hard. So he lets you sleep.

He finally taps your shoulder when he’s parked outside the house you rented for the weekend. You wake up slowly, and it takes you a minute to get adjusted to your surroundings and realize that you’re finally at your destination. You take off your seatbelt and get out of the car, and Suguru follows suit, without saying a single word.

“How was your nap?” Suguru asks, following behind you. You yawn before you respond,

“Good. I’m still tired though.” You chuckle. You grab your phone to look for the code of the door before you get to the entrance. “I’m so tired I might just go to bed.”

“We have to eat something first.” Suguru reminds you, but you’re not all that hungry. You enter the place, and he follows behind, leaving the luggage in the car for the time being. “What do you want to eat?”

“Sleep.” You answer as you turn on the lights to the place and see the beautiful decoration of the place. You couldn’t have picked a more perfect place.

“Sleep isn’t food. Pick something else.” He tells you as you walk to the couch and plop down. You sigh, throwing your head back and shutting your eyes. “Tell you what? I’ll go get us some food and you can relax. Doesn’t this place have a big bathtub? You can take a nice long bath.”

“I need bubbles.” You respond, and he chuckles. He finds so much humor in that for no reason. Maybe because you don’t need it to take a bath, but you say it as if it’s required for a bath. “I’ll just go to bed.”

You’re so tempted to walk over and touch it, but even grazing the bed will mean that you won’t be doing anything but sleeping. So even if you don’t want to, you walk over to the bathroom.

okay so being a little more serious about today, I do think is a little weird that so many of you are ready to pass judgement and take sides on a break up that, at the end of the day, we don’t know a single thing about.

opinions on the Damiano/Giorgia break up below the cut, a little critical, read at your own risk

Yes, seeing your ex kissing someone that was close to them only a few days after you break up is shitty. But it’s also not Damiano’s fault since he wasn’t the one to put out the video. He was a dummy for thinking people weren’t gonna record him but that’s also not his fault. He probably felt safe around those people and someone betrayed his trust. Also, “acting like a harlot in the club bc you’re sad” is very me coded so I can’t be harsh on him for this lmao

At this point all we can do is wish the best for both of them - I’m sure we will know more/be force fed information in the next few days - and not act like fucking animals on Damiano’s, Giorgia’s or Martina’s socials. No one did nothing wrong, it’s not a criminal offense to break up with your partner and/or make out with someone at the club.

That being said, some of you gotta stop being

1- Weird and too parasocial. You weren’t involved in this relationship whatsoever. I get liking a couple, but chill the fuck out. Giorgia/Damiano is not your friend that was broken up with or something. I still can’t believe that there were girlies having anxiety attacks and going to the hospital bc a celebrity couple is no longer together, please go outside a little lmao

2- Naive. Just because they looked like a “””perfect couple”””* on IG doesn’t mean that the relationship was perfect at all.

*I put a lot of quotation marks because I think there’s a deeper conversation here about how lifestyle influencers kind of milk their private lives - and the private lives of their partners/family - for this sort of “relatable” content and how much that sort of personal exposure must suck for people around them. Like, girlie was literally recording stories from their bed at one point. People could guess they were no longer together because that’s how much locals (not stalkers, normal people) knew the inside of their apartment. I wouldn’t last 2 weeks with someone like this. This is not an attack on Giorgia exclusively, it’s an attack on influencers in general.

3- Nosy. Listen, I love a good gossip, I’m not gonna lie, and I do think that we will know a little more about it in the coming days. However, we have to make peace with the fact that we will never know everything that happened and that’s not only okay but normal. They don’t owe us any sort of explanation about this or an apology like some weirdos on twitter were suggesting

4- If I see a single person blame Vic for anything related to this I will personally show up at your house with a machete

Anyways, that’s my opinion so please don’t send the police after me. I wish both of them the best and I’m excited for Damiano’s single era, I just know he’s gonna serve CUNT

It's hard for me to tell at the moment whether I can't see anything in the Build tag because of the massive amounts of spam or if it's just that people aren't saying anything, but I guess that is neither here nor there, other than that if nobody is saying anything after the last week it leaves me a bit ??

I last posted about this whole topic back in July - if I remember it was right at the start of the July 17th leaks, though at this point I'll admit that it's all become a bit of a blur. We've had what, now, five leaks since May? Yeah.

I've thought a lot about whether or not to post again since then. I had a friend visiting from out of the country at the time, and between that and the insanity that is my workplace at the moment, I quite frankly did not have the time or the brain space to actually work through my thoughts and put them down on paper, so to speak. When I did have some more time things had quieted down again, and I thought - well, no use dredging it up again, since I'd already laid out a lot of my thoughts here and then on twitter, too. There was also the unspoken fact that I didn't know whether or not there would be another leak, of course.

So here we are a month later coming off of another round, and after the last week I feel the need to finally get some things off my chest.

First of all, I've done some poking around and I'm disappointed but unsurprised to see that as usual, there is very little discussion outside of pro-Build spaces about how disturbing and obsessive all this is. The campaign of hate, bullying, harassment, coercion and blackmail continues and by and large people are happy to participate in it because apparently those things become okay when they are dealing with someone they view as a bad person as long as they pay lip service to 'well they're both bad people', which does not even come close to being an actual criticism of what she's doing. As always, there's also little discussion of the clear fact that she obviously doesn't care who she hurts during this process, even if it's the faves of the same fans participating in the hate campaign.

None of this aligns with my moral code. It never will. I think it's disgusting and I think that the people participating in it should be ashamed of themselves, though I know that they never will be.

I've gone into detail on all of this before, however, so I don't see the point in going into it again. I will simply state that yes, I do still believe in second chances and opportunities for redemption for anyone, regardless of what they have done. So I will always say that people should give Build the chance to try and be a better person, and that they shouldn't try to dictate to others whether or not they support him.

However (you knew that was coming, right?) - what's in those messages doesn't align with my moral code either. And yeah, I do feel like I need to say it, partly because I feel like the bubble/byl fandom at large is being a bit too dismissive of it.

I get it. I laid out up above why I think what is being done to Build is wrong. I haven't changed my mind on that. People feel so strongly that what is being done to him is wrong that it makes them extremely defensive of him.

But this situation isn't black and white and never has been, and multiple things can be true.

Example A: Some people who hate Build are guilty of behaving extremely badly and contributing to the harassment and bullying and blackmail.

On the flip side: some people who support him are guilty of hating on the other cast members in spite of the fact that there's no evidence of them doing anything. Some are also guilty of willfully turning a blind eye to the fact that he has admitted the messages are his and has apologized for them - which means that as of today the current evidence we have says that they are his, they're not fake, and he is taking responsibility for them.

Example B: His ex is clearly mentally unwell, a narcissist who is obsessed with revenge and is conducting a hate campaign to turpedo his life and career while benefiting her own.

On the flip side: it seems clear that Build is guilty of awful behaviour, of saying horrible things about people who were seemingly nothing but kind to him, of being homophobic, racist and sexist. (I'm not going to touch on the abuse allegations here because I've discussed those previously.)

Again: yes, I do think he should be given the chance to start over and redeem himself and I like to think he's capable of it, but fans really should be acknowledging what he's redeeming himself FROM.

From what I've witnessed in a lot of spaces - that's not happening. I've seen a lot of denial, I've seen a lot of handwaving and glossing over the situation. I've seen some insane claims, too. Some fans are going so far as to say that they think that his show was never going to happen, that the messages are all doctored and this is all a plot between the company, his ex and his former co-stars. (Which is just - ??? I don't even know where to start.)

Some are simply refusing to read the messages (how can a person defend him if they don't know what they're defending? I don't quite understand) while others simultaneously claim that the translations out there are misleading - but refuse to share 'acceptable' translations because that's privacy invasion. Again - ???

It's insane and downright exhausting and I am just... done. I speak up for what I think is right and call out what I think is wrong, and I while I think the handling of this is horrendous and has been from the start, I also think it's wrong to minimize and downplay what he's done. In his apology he's holding himself accountable for what he did, why won't some of his fandom? How can people argue for him to get a second chance if they won't even admit what he did that he needs a second chance for? Technically this is a third chance, I might add, because some of those messages are from after his scandal last summer.

I want to reiterate here that I don't hate Build. It seems like so often any criticism of his behaviour at all means that suddenly you're an anti or that you hate him or you're against him. I'm not going to suddenly go on diatribes about how he's a horrible person. I think it's likely that there's a lot more going on here than what meets the eye, particularly since there are people who are still well liked by most of the fandom who have stood by him until July (a certain picture that was posted with a filter comes to mind, as does someone who liked every single one of his posts since his return until they were mentioned in one of the leaked messages).

What I mean here is simply this: I don't think Build is a cartoon villain, I think he's a whole person capable of a variety of things, both good and bad.

I also want to make it clear here that I'm not here to hate on people in the fandom. I mean - glass house, stones, all that. But also I think we've had enough of that. This fandom is one of the most polarized I've ever been in and the vitriol is off the charts, I'm not going to contribute to it.

I guess my hope is just that people will think about why and how they're choosing to come to his defense, if for no other reason than the fact that in my opinon and experience, the more extreme fan claims are making it worse for him, not better. I've said this on twitter and I'll say it here - when people are confronted with attempts to downplay things, it makes them more intent on proving the opposite. If you acknowledge them then you change the footing and the conversation can move on to other things.

As I said, this is a complex situation. It's okay to acknowledge that. Things don't have to be black and white. A lot of fans are in echo chambers right now on both sides of the aisle.

Anyway. I truly hope that this will be the last post that I ever have to make on this subject. For now, at least, I've said my piece and addressed what I need to in order to feel comfortable and not just like I'm avoiding talking about the topic.

In the meantime I've turned my attention to Bible and the rest of the cast because I always have and continue to adore them and I feel like I've neglected them over the last six months (as much as a fan can neglect celebrities, of course). For all my issues with the company, I've always loved the cast.

I'm more active on Twitter than here, but I do go back and forth between the two sites.

now with that general warning about my blog taking a hard left turn into dead dove erotica territory, I wanna talk about a fic I just wrote. it’s called “apostate baptisms” and it was a commission from frog on twitter.

you could say it’s about vash washing knives’s hair after the 1998 anime finale where he puts, like, four bullets in his brother’s legs. you could also say it’s about the twins trying to reconcile the decades of hurt between them. you could maybe even say it’s about an abuse survivor processing his trauma, but I hate pathologizing in my work and really it’s more of a revenge dubcon fic.

I’m gonna talk about the dubcon. I have weird thoughts about the dubcon.

I don’t really write noncon straight. It doesn’t really appeal to me as a writer and I think the plantcest dynamic where Vash is the one on top/in control lends itself a lot more to a mutual flavor of dubious consent. it’s one where vash knows he wants to finally be the one taking something away/winning but has complicated feelings about the desire to perpetrate the harm done unto him, while knives knows he wants vash to fuck him/meld with him/crawl into his skin but feels like being tsundere about it. so in the end you get this sort of vash-taking-what-he-feels-he’s-owed situation where knives is actually fantastically into it but doesn’t ruin the dynamic by saying so out loud. somewhat consensual, but not at all sane.

I have actually written something similar with a post 1998 atticwife fic called “you’re no angel, you’re my brother,” so in a way these two stories are in conversation with each other. I think I managed to portray the dubcon as a tool of character development better in the more recent fic, though. that’s the appeal of a lot of dead dove to me—you can really use some of these themes as vehicles/catalysts for your story and I think there’s a lot I haven’t explored yet in this arena.

the dubcon, by the way, is a lot more about vash than it is about knives. it’s the catalyst for what I consider personally the most important dialogue exchange of a fic that’s mostly dialogue.

this is not just Vash’s fantastic self restraint and moral code kicking in. it’s him acknowledging that knives tends to be His Exception. over and over again in every trigun canon, vash breaks character because of knives—I was thinking especially of the confrontation in ep5 of 98 where vash, faced with the possibility of capture, pulls his gun on several women. he apologizes, of course, but states that he has to do this in order to catch knives.

It’s also emblematic of how even if Knives can rile vash into abandoning his principles, it’s always a temporary lapse. and also Vash’s habit of denying himself things he wants (at least once in the manga, notably, in regards to sex).

and of course knives is very much into the dubcon, because while I believe in writing analytically about character growth and the momentum of a climactic noncon scene getting hamstrung (edged, if you will), I also believe in tsundere knives and the absurd parallel of having a noncon kink as a guy who commits rape allegories in the original text.

I’m also a sucker for the subversion of that, by the way. Let Vash be the perpetrator for once while somehow maintaining that lily white moral compass of his. It’s a funny line to walk that still, somehow, has knives coming off as a bit of a creeper convincing his brother to noncon him in the bath. Deliciously fucked all around, I say.

Anyway, I have a lot more to say about this fic if I get the energy for it, but for now I’ll keep this to a discussion of the purposefully muddy waters of consent and power between these two guys. Love and peace ;)

Speaking again on the Blue Robot Twitter RP thing. Putting this under a cut, since it’s a bit long, and I’m writing this a little more formally than my last rant. I didn’t expect many people to see that, on account of community size, but it occurs to me I should’ve at least put a little bit of protective measures for people to be able to more easily tap in or out of the conversation. It is a triggering one. I apologize to anyone who was negatively impacted. Rectifying it now, though.

Content Warning: Discussion of Fandom Toxicity, False Accusations.

For those unaware, I was the writing team lead from the revival a few years back, and wrote several characters myself (10 mainly, 11 later, co-wrote 01). I was a late teenager for most of that, and I became something of a scapegoat for people’s complaints of everything wrong with the revival, despite not actually being the one who penned most of the things complained about. Whenever a comparison to the good of the revival was put up, it was almost always my work. (I’m allowed to brag, I was put through hell.)

I was not allowed to clarify that the people that were being spoken of as if they were me were not actually me, because the writing team essentially had code-of-honor-enforced NDAs on them. You just didn’t tell people you were the writer of a character due to the ARG elements. Any sort of hinting at you were the writer, or even outright saying it, was “dropping the curtain”. So, I basically had to just deal with the fact that several targets were put on my back that weren’t even actually mine.

Several people were violently, hatefully obsessed with me, and this lead to me getting constantly vagueposted, shittalked, accused of things like child predation/being a pedophile/supporting pedophilia for zero reason, despite being a victim myself (this got so bad that David, the CEO, had to get involved), et cetera. It was extremely nasty. A lot of people in that community were very deeply angry people, and would stop at nothing to make everyone hate whatever they hated. Assuming the worst in people was a reflex to many. It was extremely volatile and toxic.

I tried to keep everything in order as best as I could. I poured in countless hours of work to this community that seemingly hated me, a job that did not pay me, and completely ruined my mental health (I think I’m mostly recovered now, though, which is a big victory). I was the guy who did most of the work on the wiki, planned a bunch of fan favorite arcs, made a fuck ton of music and art, et cetera. Nothing I ever did was enough for people.

I know some people are confused as to how such a small community could be so toxic. I really want to address that, since it was something that confused me at first, too. I thought, naïvely, that less people would mean toxicity was easily to quell and manage- and in this case, I was wrong.

In this case, less people meant toxicity spread faster, and was less diluted.

Everyone knew everyone. I thought this was a pro, an objectively good thing that would stop- or at least hinder- people from crafting up petty drama and stirring the pot. After all, accusing someone you know of something is a lot harder than accusing a stranger. It’s easier to assume the worst in someone when you don’t know anything about them.

What instead happened was that the “everyone knew everyone” aspect made for the absolute ripest conditions for a panopticon I’ve ever seen. Everyone knew everyone. Everyone had a weapon trained at everyone. If you didn’t have a weapon trained at somebody, you’re getting shot yourself. I didn’t like the idea of pointing guns at people for no reason, so I got shot. Like, a lot, lol.

I think at least a solid chunk as to why this was the case was, like… The fault of the construction of the fanbase in general? As in, the kind of people that composed it. It wasn’t something you knew about unless you were deeply online (red flag one), on Twitter (red flag two), and super into the vocal synthesis fandom (red flag three). “Deeply online Twitter users super into vocal synthesis as a fandom” is a very cursed sentence, because… Frankly, not a lot of people who are even just one of these things are very hinged people. Being deeply online desensitizes you to the fact that the people you interact with online are people, Twitter functions very literally on an algorithm that very enthusiastically enables and emboldens outrage, and the vocal synthesis fandom as a whole is very… Weirdly discourse filled, and generally just not a very nice group of people to be around.

In retrospect… It’s kind of a no-brainer that it would be a pretty toxic place to be, full of hateful, angry people who don’t understand that their actions have weight and consequences. I just couldn’t see this when I was younger.

… Because I was the guy who accidentally revived the fandom to begin with. I just… Started making a bunch of art of my own mental image of the story, and a pairing I thought would work really well (I made 10/01 as a ship). I didn’t expect this dead-for-years fandom to come back to life, just because I was drawing things for myself.

I didn’t expect it to be this way. I didn’t expect any eyes on me. I didn’t expect that vile little corpse to come back to life, and I didn’t expect that it contained a hideous, hateful miasma of rot and venom in it that would ruin lives, including mine.

It almost makes me feel a bit guilty. If I hadn’t drawn those pieces, this fandom would’ve never been revived, and all those people would have never gotten hurt.

It sucks.

It really does suck a lot.

I am so deeply sorry to those who have been hurt. You did not deserve this.

2. Did you reread anything? What? YES, I DID! I was going to provide some numbers for this and got a little lost in the details, but half of the individual books I read this year were ones I've read before, I read some of those books (Lion Hunters) multiple times, and then I went and reread a bunch of the ones that were new to me, especially the Lymond Chronicles! The Game of Kings wins, I think. No, I know. I love rereading, and my favorite stories are the kind that make me love it more!

3. What were your top five books of the year? In alphabetical order, with an only-one-book-per-series restriction and my apologies to a few books I liked nearly as much or the same amount as these ones: The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett, He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan, The Legend of Auntie Po by Shing Yin Khor, A Power Unbound by Freya Marske, and Stateless by Elizabeth Wein.

6. Was there anything you meant to read but never got to? I should have thought to split up my answers, but yes! I remembered a few of the nonfiction ones: The Power of Babel by John McWhorter, Ducks by Kate Beaton, Caring For Your Books by Michael Dirda, Karachi Vice by Samira Shackle, and a biography of John Gielgud

12. Any books that disappointed you? Certain aspects of the Lymond Chronicles, the new-reading highlight of my year, disappointed me in ways that I have also found deeply interesting to talk and think about, and I felt that Wild Maps for Curious Minds: 100 New Ways to See the Natural World did not quite deserve its title. Get wilder and more curious!

21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama? These questions are from 2019, so I suppose they predate booktok becoming a major thing! But I certainly watched Claire run around Schuler books and, dramatically, cause The Thief and Code Name Verity to sell out!

At @red-sea-itinerary, the capital of booklr, our polls have been very dramatic, and an author has weighed in. We should all remember Abreha's palace's water clock. Nearly everyone prefers coffee with Turunesh over kingship and no one thinks Medraut should have the latter. Birds. And Telemakos is taller than Lleu!!!

25. What reading goals do you have for next year? To get around to a few of those books in 6, to read more nonfiction (I think trying more via audiobook would help), to read more diversely in terms of authors (including time periods), and to read another series that's new to me! Maybe to help poke a certain loose book club into meeting again? To have fun and escape and think and learn. Reading was enough of a challenge during and after college that I still feel delighted and grateful that I've been reading regularly and finding new books I love. :)

CORRECTION! Regina got the Walmart villain-to-hero Redemption Story

Welcome to another round of “what the hell did that Regina apologist just say?” where I go over a fan submitted biased piece of drivel and rip it point by point! And yes, I do know it’s fan submitted and is indeed from an Evil Regal as I had a shouting match with them on twitter.

I think my favorite part is where this fan says Regina was noble for not regretting anything because of Henry. That is some serious code for “everyone else’s lives don’t matter when it comes to a hot female character that committed mass murder, rape and child abuse!” Well done!

Also I apologize for how many times I use “child abuse” and “rape” and “mass murder”. But, hey, this is what Once Upon a Time gave us! It’s not my fault the villain rapist stans refuse to acknowledge that their favorites are just utter garbage.

In my opinion, their argument boils down to: Despite Regina & Hook both witnessing deaths of loved ones and committing the same acts of evil, the show explored Regina's evil past more thoroughly than Hook’s but Regina’s reasons for turning evil made more sense than Hook’s. And ultimately Regina’s redemption means more because she reached the point of no return multiple times but a love for a child made her fight harder to be a better person and look forward to a promising future. A parent-child love is the only way for a villain to find a valid redemption because unconditional love only exists between parent-child.

My Argument: Yes, Regina & Hook share similarities but only Killian Jones received a complete redemption. A parent-child love is not the only way to show a villain’s change of heart since we very much saw a true change in Killian Jones. We also saw that Killian’s love for Emma was unconditional. True love is unconditional love and the show gives us several true love couples whose love for each other was in fact unconditional. OUAT gave us two true love tests that prove Emma & Killian are true love and goes further by deliberately paralleling them with Snowing & The Princess Bride. Killian also shows unconditional love for Emma by how he handles finding out Neal is alive and stepping aside to give Henry a chance at having his parents together. He also exhibits unconditional love by forgiving Emma for turning him into the dark one and accepting her reasons for doing so. He chose to always see the best in her and her in him and that is the foundation of an unconditional love. So the premise that redemption can only happen through parent-child love is a false one and clearly done as a way to reject Killian’s redemption status.

Never mind that Killian Jones did find his path to redemption through the love of a child: Henry. His relationship with Henry was essential in becoming the man he wanted to be since it showed how much Killian had grown from the vengeful pirate Baelfire rejected to the more humble man teaching Henry how to sail. Furthermore, Killian Jones’ redemption is complete and far more relevant because he: owned his mistakes, faced victims, showed remorse, faced consequences for his actions, demonstrated a change of heart and sacrificed his life to rid the world of the darkness forever.

Whereas Regina did not face any victims, blamed others for her actions, did not sacrifice her life (in fact she let Snowing sacrifice for her), never came clean about Graham & Marian’s murders and always whined about her own happiness. She also never had a change of heart as we hear her say she hates doing good (5x23) and even after her redemption she continued to behave like she was better than others by constantly putting them down, dismissing their pain and ignoring their concerns. Also, we should reject the idea of Regina’s redemption happened because of her love for Henry due to the fact that she emotionally abused him by putting her curse and her needs before his welfare and her abuse of him was never addressed but simply brushed away. A fictional character can’t have redemption through someone they abused when that abuse is not acknowledged. That’s not character growth its just a retcon. Regina was retconned into a “good” mother in S3.

Regina vs Killian: Becoming a Villain

Basically says Regina’s reasons for turning evil made more sense than Killian’s.

Did it really though? Yes, Regina’s past was tied into the main characters so of course the show “explored” or rather spent more time on her past than Killian’s. Everything she did was to take down Snow and she hurt many other people on that journey. That was pretty much the driving plot on why Emma became the savior.

But lets break the down differences:

Regina lived a privileged life as a princess (head canons of Cora abusing her during childhood is not supported by canon and thereby irrelevant here) who never had to want for anything. She even had a doting father who may have been a pacifist but he at least loved her.

Killian Jones was abandoned by his father who sold him into slavery when he was just a child. That is in fact child abuse. Neglect and abandonment. He was abandoned and left to face whatever cruelty at the hands of slavers. He was raised by them doing back breaking labor. Can you for a moment imagine what that life must have been like for a child?

Their backgrounds could not be anymore different. Which one do you think would be more likely to choose a dark path if we take only canon into consideration? Answer: Killian Jones since his childhood was filled with abuse, abandonment and betrayal. He’d only known evil for so long. Note: this should not be used as a generalization because criminals come from all kinds of backgrounds but statistically speaking odds were not in Killian’s favor.

Blog Quote: They both committed similar acts of evil…

Imagine thinking Killian Jones’ crimes were anywhere near the same level as Regina’s? Look how black Regina’s heart is. What did she do over the course of the series that could have possibly diminished that evil? Nothing. She did NOTHING except do good things EXPECTING to get her happy ending. Then admits in Season 5 that she hated doing it. That is more of an act of an anti-hero than a hero. Which you could argue she is an anti-hero.

So what similar acts of evil do Killian and Regina share?

Each killed one of Emma’s grandfathers

Their own fathers

Abused Belle

Murdered people

Ok so maybe there is some truth to that statement. However.

Regina is the mass murderer.

Regina is the rapist.

Regina is the child abuser and child murderer.

Regina essentially magically raped an entire kingdom in both mind and body. Her curse separated families and had people sleeping with others they wouldn’t have slept with if not for her curse. Basically, Regina’s curse removed their ability to consent much like a date rape drug which is why we say she raped Graham even in Storybrooke and her attempt to seduce David was actually an attempted sexual assault. Her curse was vile. It also gave people memories of two separate lives and the second life was not a happy one!

Jefferson: Then all we’ll do is both sit. Stuck. Two lives in our heads, cursed worse than ever. Two lives, forever at odds. Double the pain, double the suffering.

Most of the people in Storybrooke wanted to flee the bad memories the curse created. And because they were fearful of Regina. But the Evil Queen stans seem to overlook the mental anguish this curse caused people. They now have two lives in their heads and the life Regina forced them to lead is the one life they’re really ashamed of. But that life is now a part of them whether they like it or not.

So Regina filled up her heart with plenty of dark deeds, some so heinous that there really can’t be forgiveness. So trying to put Regina on the same level as Killian is just absurd and erases her more heinous crimes. While Killian Jones should arguably get life in prison… Regina Mills should have faced a firing squad or possibly even burned at the stake.

In short I believe: Killian becoming a villain makes a lot more sense and at least his revenge focused on the root causes for his misery whereas Regina decided to make an innocent child suffer. Regina also decided to take on the very life her mother was supposedly forcing her to take.

Regina vs Killian: a Path to Redemption

CHANEL VS WALMART Killian stepped up to the plate. Regina stepped back.

I am not going to say that Regina was never brave or didn’t have her moments. But. Come on guys. This was HER MOMENT to prove she was sorry for everything she’d put Snow and her kingdom through and she did not take it!

And lets remember that they had no idea what the serum Evil Queen was planning. For all they knew she was going to kill the Charmings on the spot. Therefore, this moment here knocks about 10 checks off Regina’s bravery/hero column. Especially since she uses her own heart later to defend Zelena against her more evil half.

I have heard others argue before “but Regina had become good by then and already made things right with Snowing and her life was worth more than Snowing’s because of Henry!” However, that’s just nonsense. Regina doesn’t even regret what she did to Snowing nor has she done anything to make up for the horrific things she did to them. She joined their side to get her happy ending not because she was sorry for what she did to them. Also, Snowing had Baby Neal. I guess Henry is more important than Baby Neal? Henry would still have Emma, his real mother, were he to lose Regina, the mother that abused him for 10+ years. And Regina needed to make a sacrifice for her victims (Snowing) and for the greater good (the town) in order to complete a redemption.

Meanwhile, Killian Jones actually sacrifices his life to save them all from the Dark Ones then goes on to be tortured and nearly throne into the River of Lost Souls because he refuses to betray them. Even refuses to betray Gold! This alone adds about 20 checks to his bravery/hero column!

I have heard people say “but this was also cleaning up his mess”! I’m sorry did I misunderstand the part where he said he did not want to become a dark one? I am pretty sure he said he didn’t want to live if it meant becoming a dark one. So I am pretty much going to lay the blame at the feet of the darkness because the darkness was pushing its own agenda. The dark ones were the ones manipulating and using him so they could return. Then Killian had found the strength to break free from their hold and with Emma’s help end the darkness forever. Or would have if not for Gold. So no, this wasn’t his mess. He gave his life to end the mess!

Now a Regina Apologist might say “but Regina was going to sacrifice herself in season 2!”

If Regina didn’t sacrifice herself to stop the kill switch then Henry would die and at that point her perceived happy ending would be gone anyway. Her curse was broken and now the child she illegally adopted and abused was in peril thanks to her actions. This might have been a brave moment but it didn’t happen because she had a change of heart. It was because her plans were thwarted and there wasn’t an alternative solution.

“but she begs to be remembered as Regina and not the evil queen!” - Regina apologists

So? She didn’t want the kid she illegally adopted and abused to see her as the monster she was. It doesn’t mean she wasn’t a monster. It doesn’t mean that moments later she would have let them all die if given the chance.

And just to be fair, I do not count Rumple giving his heart to Fook and destroying Fumple an act of heroism either. Rumple had put Henry in jeopardy for his quest to die and join Belle in the afterlife. We know everything Rumple has ever done, aside from kill his own father, has been an act of selfishness. Therefore, it is my opinion based on his past actions, that if Belle had been alive then it wouldn’t have happened.

Therefore, Killian’s bravery in Season 5 far outweighs anything Regina ever did. And Rumple cancelled out his own act of heroism in S3 by pulling all the crap he did afterwards. All hail the real Once Upon a Time Villain to Hero: Killian Jones!

But didn’t this blogger just get done saying their crimes were similar? Never mind the idiocy of this. Imagine applying this to anything else?

“We can’t call this murderer more evil than this violent criminal because this violent criminal just didn’t get the chance to kill anyone like that murderer!” SAY WHAT? You judge them by what they’ve done not on “what they could have done”. Goodness! I swear where do Evil Regals pull this bullshit from?

Killian was 200-300 years old. I think he’d have found “the time” to be “eviler” if he really was. But he wasn’t. We’ve only witnessed a handful of Killian’s murders and some we haven’t seen he openly admits to. If the show wanted us to believe he was as evil as Regina and Rumple then his heart would have been as black as theirs.

Regina was in her late 40’s (https://oncepodcast.com/forums/topic/final-timeline-and-ages/) when the curse broke and her death tole rivaled Rumple’s who is also somewhere between 200-300 years old (Hades, S5). Regina had less time but did more evil on a far grander scale than Killian did in all 300 years of his existence. That alone makes her more evil.

So a little recap: Yes, they both killed their fathers. Yes, they both murdered one of Emma’s grandparents. Yes, their evil deeds were spurred by revenge. If you look at just the surface then the premise that Killian Jones is a male version of Regina Mills may be accurate. But if you look a little further you see there are not only significant differences but that Killian Jones comes out looking a hell of a lot better with a more complete character evolution.

Killian’s Change vs Regina’s

As I briefly mentioned in my opening, this is where the blogger pulls the “child-parent love is the only path to redemption” nonsense. Now, this blogger isn’t the first, or maybe they were the first, but I have heard this sentiment not only from Evil Regals but from the KnightRook fandom as well. Since they believe that Wish Hook abandoning his daughter to go get drunk and plot murder and rape (and none of that ever being addressed) is good enough to make him father of the year and claim his five second redemption complete.

It’s honestly 100% completely false.

The only things you need for a character redemption are:

Taking responsibility for your actions without blaming others

apologizing to your victim

showing a change of heart

learning from your mistakes

remedy the situation if possible

and in the terms of a fictional world where we’re talking about magic, murder and other heinous crimes the villain MUST:

Make a sacrifice for the greater good. That means something beyond the character’s immediate loved ones or something that would benefit them.

All of this can happen without the love of a child. Though I will say, love of some kind usually plays a part.

So between Regina and Killian, which one checked off all or most of this list? Killian Jones.

1. Taking Responsibility for your actions without blaming others

Regina blamed everyone else but herself! In fact, the evil queen becomes a separate entity to blame so Regina can become innocent of all wrong doings and get a happy ending. She may have admitted to “torture and unspeakable things” but the times she outright blames others for her actions without owning up outweighs maybe the two times she mentions it. Especially since when she mentions her deeds its when she’s crying about her happy ending. So, no, I am sorry, Regina never owned her mistakes, never had a moment where she expressed deep regret for her victims and never came to a realization that she really doesn’t deserve anything.

There isn’t a single time throughout the course of this show where Killian blames someone else for what he has done. He owned up to his part in taking Milah away from Rumple and their son. Blames himself for what Gold had him do. He has come clean about where his rings come from. It took him a moment to face his demons but he did come to the realization that he needed to face David. There was the phone call to Emma in s4. He doesn’t even blame Emma for his weakness at being unable to fight the darkness at first. He doesn’t even blame the darkness but his own weakness! There are times he might have been ashamed which is human but he never blames his deeds as if someone else was responsible.

Killian: 1

Regina: 0

2. Apologizing to your Victim

Killian Jones apologized to Ariel, Ursula, Belle, David, and Emma.

Regina’s serum half apologized to Snow but that was after some of the evil had been drained from her heart. And no, I do not count the time Regina apologized to Belle to get Belle to do something for her.

Killian: 2 Regina: 0

3. Remedy the situation

Killian Jones made things right with Ursula and then stood by Belle when she wanted refuge from Rumple. He dedicated time to help saving the fairies after he fell victim to Gold (something he blames himself for and not Gold). He also tried to make things right with Neal though Neal acted like a self-righteous ass just like his father. Sorry pal but he who sends underage girlfriend to jail for your crimes then yells at her when she didn’t immediately tell you you had a son puts you on my “asshole” list! Killian’s other victims were long since gone but we at least know he’d make amends if he could.

Regina still owns a whole vault full of hearts and I am going to once again say she let the Charmings sacrifice for her in S6! Did she ever even do anything for Maleficent? I don’t think she did! And she certainly never helped Belle. Maybe you could count the Season 3 curse she casts but really she had no other choice so I can’t in good conscious give that one to her. Nor the thing at the well in S2 since that was Henry’s doing. Really what did she remedy that wasn’t for her own personal gain?

Killian: 3 Regina: 0

4. Showing a change of heart

We have Killian Jones literally taking pages out of Emma’s book and a whole episode of him talking David out of revenge. He becomes a Dark One with all of this power yet he gives it up and never seeks it again. He is tortured in the Underworld and refuses to even write the name of his life long enemy. Gone are his wise cracks, sexual innuendo and much of his bravado. Past S4a we see a much more humble Killian Jones that is reluctant to even call himself a hero.

Regina does stop murdering people but I can’t give her this one either. Why you might ask? She says so herself that she hates doing good which to me means she has not had a true change of heart. She remains verbally abusive and looks down on others. She may no longer murder you if you tick her off but she does so figuratively with her words and actions.

Killian: 4 Regina: 0

5. Learning from your Mistakes

I think Killian shows that he has with the way he helps Emma and David. When Emma is angry with her parents over keeping the past from her, Killian is able to approach Emma in a way that portrays his familiarity with what they are feeling and knowing how to talk to Emma. Then you have his interactions with David in the S6 episode where David wants revenge on his father. Killian knows where seeking revenge leads you. And we know that he has learned enough to be very uncomfortable about keeping all of this from Emma.

Regina, Regina, Regina. Let me point right to Season 7 when she teaches Ivy dark magic and gives her mother’s evil book to Robyn. Its like she has literally learned nothing. But Regina really hasn’t had to learn from her mistakes because all of her mistakes were either erased (her abuse of Henry) or were blamed on others (Rumple, Snow, the book and the evil queen)

Killian: 5 Regina: 0

6. Making a Sacrifice for the Greater Good

Only Killian Jones sacrificed his life and was tortured to save everyone and the town by ending the darkness forever.

Killian: Hits every point. Regina: fell way behind.

Blog Quote: “Eventually, Regina became motivated to redeem herself because she wanted to. Even if she had nothing, she would still try to do the right thing. “

Why did she want to though? It wasn’t to “do the right thing”. She hated doing the right thing. Her motivation was to keep Henry and to get a happy ending. The moment she sent her lover and his “wife” across the town line she sought out to get what she felt she deserved: her story re-written. She didn’t even pause to consider that she in fact didn’t deserve that at all. And her goal was never to become a better person. It was not to make things right with her victims. It was for herself. This is evident because she keeps her vault of hearts and continues to treat all of the other characters as lesser than her. The character has no growth! Except to “stop murdering”. That was it!

Aside from sending the Hoods across the town line, I can’t think of another moment Regina “tried to do good even when she had nothing”? This blog gave no instances. Does the blogger mean at the town line in S3? When Regina had to or be cursed herself? Don’t care! When else? She didn’t do it when the Charmings were facing her serum half. She didn’t do the right thing in S4 when she was treating Emma like crap and blaming Emma for what she herself caused. So I am at a loss here.

Blog Quote: “we learned that Regina had other reasons for her villainy. One reason for Regina's evil actions developed after she became evil. The bigger villain Regina became, the more hopeless she felt.”

Honestly when? All of this is stated without an ounce of proof. Regina’s only motive was to kill Snow, destroy lives & get her own HEA. That’s it. Regina didn’t want to change. Not until all she had left was Henry and Henry rejected her. Regina straight out denied her evil past was her fault.

EXCUSING CHILD ABUSE

That’s got the be the biggest puke worthy Regina Exemption Clause ever & it’s not what she said or showed.

Using Fanon to excuse Regina

Killian was a CHILD SLAVE. Regina grew up a privileged princess. Did Cora abuse 26ish old Regina? Yes. Does that excuse what she became? No. Does that mean she was more developed? No. It doesn't. Regina is in fact not well rounded at all because we're simply told she is redeemed without her ever having to do anything to earn that redemption.

USING ALLEGED POPULARITY AS A MEASURING TOOL

Blog Quote: Regina was the highlight of OUAT. Many viewers and critics say that she carried the show on her back

So because some fan wrote some biased drivel on a fan submitted TV “news” site… it’s a fact? Articles from Screen Rant do not reflect the general audience.

Let’s follow with this fact: Regina had the most screen time from S4-S7ep12. The show was cancelled that first half of Season 7. Do the math.

If Regina carried it then she’s responsible for those numbers and could not keep the show afloat once CaptainSwan and Snowing were gone. The show FAILED with her as a lead.

Now maybe if Regina had left and CaptainSwan had stayed the same thing would have happened. But you can’t point to fan biased articles and loud obnoxious twitter users as being representative of live audience views. Did you poll the audience? I think not.

The fact is that CaptainSwan is still being talked about today. Long after the show has ended there are still articles being generated about Emma Swan and Killian Jones both separately and together. Most of these are also fan generated but some aren’t. It is my belief judging by the content we see being produced that general audiences tend to gravitate more towards real heroes like Emma Swan, good hearted pirates like Killian Jones and love stories like CaptainSwan that show how far two people are willing to go for each other. Emma Swan and Killian Jones were a much bigger draw for your average audience viewer than Regina who spent most of the time crying about her own happiness (which is disgusting when you think about the magnitudes of her crimes).

Yes, yes we did. Season 4 was an entire struggle for him. He also showed regret when he slipped (the phone call to Emma, him trying to free the fairies, his shame over not helping Ariel, regret over keeping the scissors in s6, shame over how he handled finding out he killed David’s father).

When did Regina struggle? Hell, she’d have re-killed Marian if she thought she could’ve gotten away with it! Whenever Regina does something wrong something or someone else always gets the blame for it.

BELIEVABLE? LIKABLE?

She is 100% unlikable. She wasn’t believable as a redeemed hero. She never answered for Graham & continued to be a jerk…

This piece spends a whole lot of time on how quickly Killian & Emma fell in love… but makes no mention how fast the Charmings forgave the woman that ruined their lives? And all she had to do to earn that forgiveness was admit she’s a sociopath that didn’t regret anything! How is that believable? It isn't.

GET A NEW ARGUMENT ALREADY THIS ONE HAS BEEN DEBUNKED!

The above occurred during the twitter conversation I had with the person who wrote the hit piece on Killian.

So because you think an arc was supposed to be about Emma you think you can just toss what happened aside? It doesn’t work like that. Whether you like what happened or not it still happened. And that right there is another prime example of why this piece is biased. You can’t toss out facts simply because you don’t like them then write some nonsense and say its all fact based. It clearly isn’t!

After saying everything I’ve said above I leave you with this final thought:

Between Regina and Killian, Killian was the only one to receive a complete redemption arc and possibly the only one that could since Regina’s crimes were beyond heinous. So the fact that the show tried to say she is redeemed without showing her redemption actually makes her the Walmart version of a villain to hero. Why is that? They thought she was too popular to kill off and killing her off was the only way for an unrepentant child abusing mass murdering rapist that never showed remorse or apologized and continued to be a bully gets any kind of redemption. She had to die for the greater good. But she didn’t.

Some news

Hello everyone!

I would like to apologize for my absence. I've been quite busy lately and haven't had time to do what I wanted to do. The request I wanted to answer is still not finished and I haven't made that much progress on chapter 4. I'm truly sorry. But now that I've got two weeks to rest ahead of me, I intend to do what I love and finish what I set out to do.

Also, I'd like to talk about the VN and everything I've done so far:

About the game:

Firstly, I've written and coded some of the first part of the game, I still have to correct it, complete it, change a few things (and I'd like to implement an inventory and level system in this game, but I don't know how yet.).

The different routes:

Wukong and Macaque: The first two chapters have been implemented in the game.

No choice yet to change the story.

Arthur (temporary name) -a tiger demon-:

Combat phase (in progress)

Start of chapter 2 (in progress)

M??n Wuk?ng: A hidden path which is not fully developed as yet in the game.

The tea house and sauna routes are still not finished and doesn't have yanderes yet. I think for the tea house it could be a dragon and for the sauna I really have no idea right now :')

The game will have three main paths (triggered by a choice at the start of the game):

Murderous Lust (you're with Lex and you follow the story)

Variant 1 (Lex is dead and you're working with the Facility for Mother)

Variant 2 (Lex wants you dead and you're tracked by the Facility for having betrayed Mother)

About the art:

It was a lot more complicated than I thought. First of all, I needed a furry artist at all costs (Wukong, macaque, ect… are demons with anthropomorphic designs, so a furry artist was the best option). I spent several afternoons looking for artists. On Discord, Twitter, Furafinity… It was so long and complicated. Either their style didn't match my project, or their commission were closed, or I couldn't trust them.

After a while, I found someone. I wasn't totally convinced by his style -although it was beautiful, I wasn't sure it would go well with my VN-. We started talking, he seemed interested… then nothing. With no response even after more than a week, I decided to give up and turn to another artist. So off I went again in search of an artist. Later, I found one. His style appealed to me and everything seemed okay with him. HOWEVER, there is something that I always do, I check all the artist's network. 1 - Because I like to do so and to know more about the person I can work with. 2- Because I don't want to work with a jerk. AND THIS ONE, it was a true specimen. He left hate messages on other artists' accounts and I even found homophobic messages he'd left under the account of someone who'd asked him for commissions. I ran away from this creep.

And the more I searched, the more I lost hope of finding someone for this project. Maybe I was only going to be able to make a VN without art… I didn't like that idea at all, but if I couldn't find anyone, I had no choice.

Defeatist, I gave myself one last afternoon of searching. If I still couldn't find anyone, I was going to have to make up my mind. And then I came across an artist whose style attracted me. His works were beautiful and the more I searched through his accounts, the more I liked this person.

So I went ahead and contacted him, I was so stressed about getting a negative response or no response at all. But the artist got back to me. He's a really cool guy and he draws so fucking good ijnreijnevineinzijnoznfiojfnipnlckd.

The first commission should be ordered early this month. I'm so happy to have finally found the perfect artist for the job!

One rather important question: Will there be any NSFW? After a lot of thought, yes. There will be scenes like that in the game.

The plagiarism video and my brain

I need to gather up my thoughts because my brain has done some really heavy lifting with some of my past experiences and it's a wild ride. Not sure how coherent this is going to be, but! I'm going to try and unpack some of it.

Hbomberguy, a video essayist on Youtube, recently released a hefty video (it's, like, 4 hours long) about plagiarism on the platform, focusing on a few other content creators before getting to the bulk of the video, which is about James Somerton, a commentator who does videos about LGBTQ+ representation in media. hbomberguy has come with ALL the RECEIPTS proving without a shadow of a doubt that Somerton stole most of his content from other writers, reading their words and claiming them as his own. It's shitty, but unfortunately not inherently illegal, particularly since Somerton almost always backtracks when accused and then reups those videos with the barest of efforts to credit the original writers.

So, I have no idea who Somerton is. I sort of(?) recall some sort of controversy about a Youtuber who stole from The Celluloid Closet (a famous documentary about homosexuality and Hollywood) but I do remember that the person apologized and pointed out that there was very little research in the way of queer people in American media so of course he HAD to borrow heavily from Celluloid Closet. I sort of shrugged at the time and moved on, never thinking about it again until I watched the hbomberguy video

And hoo boy it's a lot to pack. Somerton apparently never had an original idea in his head. All the great points he's made in his videos were made by other people whom he stole words from, and when he DID have original content in his videos, it was largely misogynist and...rather racist too? Ouch.

So in the middle of the video, hbomberguy points out that Somerton did a video about the fascist themes in the anime Attack on Titan. And I started to freak out. I, myself, wrote an op-ed for syfy.com about fascism and anime, and I mentioned Attack on Titan. it was originally posted in October of 2018, a full 4 years before Somerton did his video, so i was rather worried that he'd also plagiarised ME (this is how my brain works, and considering the full extent of obscure sources Somerton used for his videos, I don't think my fear was unfounded). The original article doesn't exist on syfy.com anymore, as they decided that Fangrrls as a vertical just wasn't working for their brand and they stripped years of work from female writers from their site. I have a backup of the article here for reference.

As for whether Somerton plagiarised me, I feel icky but I ended up downloading the transcript for the video in question and perused through it. I don't THINK he stole any of my words, because the bulk of the video is about the anti-semitic elements in Attack on Titan's later seasons. When I wrote my piece, the fascist elements were still fairly subtle and the big reveal about the Eldians being treated as second class citizens, a once great power (given holy gifts by "God" no less) reduced to living in ghettos and wearing armbands and definitely being coded as Jewish people, hadn't come in yet. My op-ed was about fascism in anime in general, and I mentioned more than just Attack on Titan. I imagine that if my article were still widely available, Somerton might've taken from it. But is that my ego talking? It's probably my ego talking. But I know for SURE that this particular piece still sent a ripple through the larger anime community.

I know this because I am a woman who dared share an opinion on the internet and suddenly anime weebs were spreading the article through twitter and facebook and calling me out for writing a shitty take.

Was my take shitty? IDK, I still got paid for it and I actually wish I'd written more about it but my editor said that it was fine and the article's like 5 years old at this point and waaaaaaay out of date now since AoT's fascist themes have grown so much more blatant. I only scratched the surface, while newer takes on AoT have the benefit of more story to make their arguments more sound. Some of THESE articles, the more recent ones, Somerton definitely stole from because hbomberguy proved it in his video. I'm just watching from the sidelines right now, very bemused and my brain is coming up with what-if's by the truckload.

I'm just unpacking this now because I don't think I ever fully faced the criticisms I received because of my initial op-ed. My editor warned me that my work could be inflammatory and that I should brace myself. I locked down my Twitter account (as my editor suggested) and ignored any messages from people I didn't recognize for about 2 weeks after the article was posted. Sure enough, the article was spread tens of thousands of times on FB and Twitter. Some of the comments I'd seen called me "misinformed" (fair), "ethnocentric" (I suppose), a "dumb bitch," (possibly?), a "woke SJW" (thanks!), and, most horribly, "white", which for some reason offended me more than the ones calling me a dumb bitch.

One big argument against my op-ed boiled down to the fact that I, as an American, am not aware of the subtleties in Japanese media and I didn't understand Japan's own relationship with its past and I put a Western viewpoint on it (ethnocentrism at its finest). Me...a Filipino-American. Me, a descendent of people (Filipinos) who were subjected to Japan's imperialist expansion in Asia. The Philippines became a battleground between Japanese and Allied forces in WWII. Bataan Death March? Hello? I know my history, but I didn't place this in the article. I thought my mentions of Japan's occupation of China and Korea were enough to show that Japan definitely had imperialist and fascist tendencies in its history and MAYBE that might provide a throughline to why Japanese media is still fascinated with this stuff but it wasn't enough, I guess. It is...a puzzle.

Oh and the original idea for "srsly what's up with Nazis and anime?" came from J, my significant other, who is Japanese-American.

Where's my brain going this? I don't know, but I think I'm happy I'm getting this off my chest now?

I'm sorry and if you read this all the way through, I'm grateful to ya'll.

EDIT: and America is as guilty of burying the sins of the past as much as any other country. Think about the historical revisionist movements which claim that African slaves liked working in plantations because we need to tell American kids these lies to feel better about themselves and not hate their own country. When my views were called "ethnocentric", what POV did my critics think I SHOULD have used? Or are we looking at a case of me "interrogating the narrative from the wrong perspective"?

I'm using your Empati Theme, and I love how customizable it is, but there are a few things I was curious about. I tried to look up the answers before bothering you, and had no luck.

If you don't have the answers to these questions or the time to answer them, that's fine, I still greatly appreciate the themes you provide!

Is there a way to have photos show up as the preview for photo & text posts? My current format is a line of text as a title and then the image, if I make sure the image is at the top then it shows the image preview, but otherwise it will show the document icon. (this one isn't nearly as complicated since I know I can reformat my posts, it would just be a long process)

Is there a way to add comment & share buttons on posts, and move all of the buttons to the bottom, similarly to the way there are on the dash?

Do you know if there is a way to add in infinite scrolling? I've tried multiple variations of different code, nothing has worked.

And my final questions are would it be too difficult to add additional social media buttons similar to the facebook, twitter, youtube, ect, and have you considered making their order a slide and drop for rearranging? I would love to add some additional sites, but the other link option works for a splash page.

So here are my answers to each of your questions below:

Is there a way to have photos show up as the preview for photo & text posts?

To answer this, allow me to give you a bit of context.

Tumblr has a thing called NPF (Neue Post Format) — where every post created in a new beta editor allows us to put multiple types of media in the same post.

Previously, before this, we could create posts based on their post types, called "legacy post types." It's called "legacy" because Tumblr has been moving away from this for a long time (I believe they started this around 2018).

The thing is, with this NPF, it's very difficult to differentiate which one is a text post and which one is a "photo" post since the theme engine cannot differentiate these post types anymore (every post created in NPF is mostly categorized as "text").

My approach in building this grid theme is by manually detecting the media block in the posts:

If the image is at the very top of the post, it will show as an image.

If the image is not at the very top (it starts from a text block), then it will show the document icon.

So I apologize that there is no workaround for this in the meantime 🙏

Is there a way to add comment & share buttons on posts, and move all of the buttons to the bottom, similarly to the way there are on the dash?

The theme engine on Tumblr doesn't have the ability to have the comment/reply system similar to the dashboard, unfortunately. I really wish they did.

As for the "share button" on posts, I will consider including this in the next updates!

Implementing infinite scrolling can result in a code break in the grid layout posts. I have tried including this in the first iteration when coding this, but to no avail 🥲

When it comes to rearranging the order of the social media buttons, there is no way to do that in the Tumblr Customizer.

Unfortunately, there is not, and the customize page has not been updated since 2015 (which is a shame; Tumblr should also pay attention to user experience in customizing the theme).

Regarding additional sites, what other sites are you thinking? I will consider adding this to the theme!

So, I haven't seen what's on twitter lately, mostly because I've really taken a step back from the platform over the last year or so. It's a cesspit and I hate everyone on it (barring my friends who I love).

However, the comparing Napoleon to Hitler is an old nonsense that's been going on for years and it's a real fucking piss off. It absolutely comes from the fact that Napoleon represents strong, centralized state power and is, obviously, associated with years of war in Europe (who started what, where, and when is a discussion for elsewhere). The supposed analogy to Hitler is drawn by those who literally know only the previous two points about Napoleon.

Aside from, like, Napoleon's reputation (dude's fine), the bigger issue, the more important issue, is how it trivializes what Hitler did and all he represents. It's harmful and hurtful to survivors and their decendents, and all Jews everywhere, and it's an absolute fucking pissoff.

The holocaust and Hitler are not things to throw around as edgy internet points - whether in an attempt to slag off Napoleon (please people, the man has enough shit in his legacy, you don't need to bring Hitler into it), or in an attempt to idk, grant Hitler some edge of "legitimacy" or "he's just like others" or something.

I hate this garbage. Fuck all that noise.

Some stuff on Napoleon and Jews

[Disclaimer: I'm not Jewish, nor is this area of Napoleon's reign a speciality of mine, so I may get things wrong, or not-quite-right. Sincere apologies in advance. Please feel free to add on or correct me if I put my foot in it.]

Napoleon's relationship with the Jewish community in France was complicated, as these things usually are in the late 18th and early 19th century Europe. Especially when undertaken by a child of Revolution and Enlightenment who was still cultrually Catholic (though, his faith and associated beliefs were complex and changed over the course of his life) and grew up within all the anti-semetic baggage that was part and parcel of European life at that time (and still is, in many respects, today).

Note: Historians are all over the place on Napoleon’s views, whether he hated the Jews or not, whether he was purely out for his own gain or not, whether there was any altruism present or not. People are very, very, very heated about the subject - which makes sense. Just like, as a general flag.

Some of the first laws in France that emancipate the Jews came into effect during the French Revolution - so they pre-date Napoleon's assencion to power by a good few years. E.g., the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, 1789, granted freedom of religion and worship, provided that it did not contradict public order.

Napoleon himself kept these laws, building some aspects of them into the Code. In countries he conquered, he emancipated the local Jewish population - all as part of his effort to further spread the French Revolutionary ideals then, later, the French Imperial ideals.

The big thing Napoleon's famous for is revoking the laws that required Jews to reside within ghettos thus enabling them to rent or own property with greater liberty than previously experienced. In 1807, Napoleon passed a law designating Judaism one of the official religions in France alongside Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Calvinist Protestants (i.e., Hugenots). He also opened up previously restricted occupations and broadened the economic opportunities of the Jewish community.

Napoleon had the national Israelite Consistory established which served as a centralized authority for Jewish religious, economic, and community life within France (Napoleon loved centralized authorities). There were regional Consistories as well that answered to the national one. The Consistories were all run by a board composed entirely of Jews, appointed by the local prefect (who would not have been Jewish). So it was a blend of Jewish autonomy and independence yet structured within Napoleon's top-down approach to government (as the prefect would have been one of Napoleon's appointments/his hiring would have been informed by Napoleon's preferences).

An unintended benefit of Napoleon mucking around in Europe was that he broke up many of the existing caste systems simply by steam rolling in and saying "alright, have the Code Napoleon." Through the dissolution of these systems, and the political values/regulations imposed via Napoleon's takeovers, life, broadly speaking, improved for Jews - especially in the Rhineland and other areas of the Germanies and states subsumed into France. As always, though, YMMV and this is brush strokes.

However. It's always more complicated than just "only good(ish) things."

As noted, Napoleon was a Christian-acculturated man born in 1769 and this reflects in his approach towards Jews and his policies and the motiviations behind said policies.

Napoleon was keen on creating an integrated, somewhat unified French society and identity, with French language and cultural norms being the dominate traits that people should embody. The concept of national identity was still, broadly, in its infancy in 1800 but he was certainly a proponent of it.** So, while Jews were liberated from the ghettos, Napoleon expected them to assimilate into French society - which he thought meant giving up some of their religious and cultural traditions.

In addition, Napoleon still restricted where Jews could migrate within the French Empire, which was done in tandem with his attempt to end, or at least greatly restrict, Jewish money lending. Again, all tied to attempts to support assimilation.

Money lending had, historically, been one of the few trades open to Jews in Europe (e.g., Venice limited Jews to money lending and selling of second hand items. They could practice as doctors only with a special papal dispensation which required sponsorship from a respected patron - usually bishop or cardinal, sometimes a nobleman or patrician) and Napoleon was concerned, in typical anti-semetic style, that Jews were taking advantage of their customers.

Napoleon was also seeking to try and push Jews into new professions - primarily the trades and agriculture - so there was a focus in his regulations to encourage Jews to pursue farming or artisinal trades, among other things. Again, again, assimilation - but it’s also informed by the fact that France’s economy by 1806/08 was showing signs of slowing down and Napoleon was attempting to stall this. His restrictions on migration, I believe, were revoked in 1811 and the remainder of the restrictions ended when the Infamous Decree of 1808 was not renewed (during the Bourbon restoration).

Another negative impact was the loss of Jewish naming traditions. In his effort to make the world’s largest bureaucracy, Napoleon began requiring people to have surnames. Not necessarily a common thing at the time, and he had certain rules about the names people could choose. For Jews, they couldn’t pick anything from the Torah, nor could they use town names, and these restirctions - along with the entire requirement itself - led to a loss of Jewish naming practices in these regions, at least outwardly. How communities worked to maintain these traditions within themselves is another story.

In addition, while the Jews had far greater freedom to worship than previously experienced, some of the aspects of their relgious life remained regulated - though it was via the Consistory system previously mentioned. The actual day-to-day impact of this on religious and cultural life for France’s Jews, I don’t know. I’m sure someone’s done a study on it though.

(**Napoleon was generally pro-immigration and believed it didn't matter "what side of the Rhine" a person was born on, if they wanted to be French they were French. However, they were expected to assimilate into to French society, to super over simplify his stance. I've a post somewhere in my backlog about Napoleon's immigration stuff. [Insert obligatory disclaimer about applying broad statements and how it's always way more complex and nuanced etc. etc.])

On a personal level, who knows what Napoleon actually thought about Jews and what he was hoping to attain as a final outocme of his various legislations. Some of his quotes say he was aiming for full integration to the point where Jews are no longer visibly distinct (clothing, culture, language, food etc.). Some was just more general “I just want everyone to be French(tm) but otherwise, so long as you pay taxes, I don’t care”.

I suspect it was a mix since, in terms of extant quotes, he swings in his motivations, his views, his expectations. There are quotes where he's quite anti-semetic (see some of his comments in 1806) and ones where he's not as bad.

I don’t think he’s every wholly not anti-semetic - even his better statements are still tinged with it. Which, unfortunately, was par for the course of most people at that time. He wasn’t virulent or violent, the way some were (and are), but the broad anti-semetism of the time was certainly in him.

That said, Napoleon valued his appearance of being a liberator and understood the importance of having people On Side, which impacted his regulatory and legislative decisions. I also think he did believe in some of the old values of the Revolution. There was an idealist streak in him that came out from time to time and was, to my reading, truly earnest.

It's also important, for the sake of context, to note that in passing a lot of his more liberatory laws, he pissed off powerful groups. As emperor, he was always balancing different political interests of many parties - both internal and external to France - and this does need to be taken into account. Many of his actions, as they pertain to the Jews, would have been seen by much of Europe at the time as quite revolutionary (even if today we look at it and go "some of this was good, some of this was not good"). So there was some sticking-his-neck-out-a-bit.

Some of the powers-that-be, such as Austria, Russia, England, were opposed to Napoleon's approach to his Jewish subjects, not to mention internal-to-France powers and pressures. It's all a balancing act in a situation that could be a powder-keg.

In exile, Napoleon's doctor Barry O'Maera asked about his reasons for "encouraging the Jew so much" (to use O'Maera's words) and Napoleons' response really was a balance of different motives - some good, some YIKES, some anti-semetic, some pragamtic, some a clear carry over of revolutionary ideals etc.:

I wanted to make them leave off usury, and become like other men. There were a great many Jews in the countries I reigned over ; by removing their disabilities [i.e., their legal restrictions], and by putting them upon an equality with Catholics, Protestants, and others, I hoped to make them become good citizens, and conduct themselves like others of the community. I believe I should have succeeded in the end. My reasoning with them was, that, as their rabbis explained to them, that they ought not to practise usury to their own tribes, but were allowed to do so with Christians and others, that, therefore, as I had restored them to all their privileges, and made them equal to my other subjects, they must consider me the head of their nation, like Solomon or Herod, and my subjects as brethren of a tribe similar to theirs. That, consequently, they were not permitted to practise usury with me or them, but to treat us as if we were of the tribe of Judah. By this, I gained many soldiers. Besides, I should have drawn great wealth to France as the Jews are very numerous, and would have flocked to a country where they enjoyed such superior privities. Moreover, I wanted to establish an universal liberty of conscience. My system was to have no predominent religion, but to allow perfect liberty of conscious and of thought. To make all men equal, whether Protestant, Catholics, Mahometans [Muslims], Deists, or others ... [Napoelon then goes on to talk about making government independent of religion and the strong importance of separation of church and state. Napoleon was particularly keen on ridding the Catholic Church of their power within state/civic happenings.] - A Voice from St. Helena, Barry O'Meara, p. 183

As always, with exile memoirs, Napoleon is structuring his legacy and trying to create a specific image of himself. That said, I think this is one of the times where I believe what he said does reflect, more or less, his motives and his thinking back during the height of Empire.

Anyway - I hope this helps add some nuance to the Napoleon & Jews thing - though written by a non-expert. And yeah, comparing Napoleon to Hitler is bunk history and people should know that by now.

But I will end by again emphasizing that it is disgusting and disrespectiful, if not outright harmful, to throw Hitler and the Holocaust around as edge internet points. That is the real issue here, not Napoleon's reputation.

The real issue is, always is, the anti-semetism.

Howdy! My name is Bo, or Davey/Dave, depending on what you’re more comfortable with. I go by He/They/It pronouns. I am VERY immature, so my apologies if that offsets some people. I promise you I have my moments where I’m not. I’m also on the autism spectrum, so, yknow, the more you know! (yknow?)

My blog is centered around my favorite game (Stardew Valley), my Ocs (Mostly sdv centered Ocs), and anything else I deem acceptable.

As stated before, my blog is heavily centered around Stardew Valley and my OCs. (Also a fanfic I’m working on, but is currently on hiatus.)

I also try my best to be a non-harmful environment, which means I try not to spread hate to those who don’t deserve it. (Ppl who deserve it are listed under “DNI.” I’m not nonviolent, I just follow my own moral code.)

On top of a non-harmful environment, I also try to be inclusive! Any reccommendations on how I could do better, please let me know! (AKA send an ask, or a DM when I open them up to the public.)

As for the technicalities of my blog, I’d like to say I’m generally SFW. Are there hints to NSFW elements? Yes. Do I make content on other sites that isn’t SFW? Yes. Am I aware that my blog is more “mature”? Yes. BUT, I label anything that is slightly suggestive (AKA showy clothes/half naked pictures) as suggestive, or anything NSFW as NSFW. I will not be posting NSFW images, just words if anything.

I like to think I make my “political” beliefs apparent. Political is in quotes because basic human right isn’t really political, but everyone has their own definition. This means I’m not afraid to say I think bigots and TERFs should get their skin melted off. So, yknow, if you’re not comfortable with violent words towards wastes of oxygen, then leave or don’t, it’s not like I can force you.

My blog is very LGBTQ+. Like, supidly LGBT. Like, down a rabbithole of xenogenders and neopronouns cuz I think they’re kinda cool LGBT. I have very few non-LGBT characters that I have created, actually.

This is also an art blog.

As for questions, anyone’s free to ask me a question or two. (as long as it isn’t intrusive to my personal life.
