The Price Of Freedom

"Hey Newt" she calls out for him.

"Hmm?" He looks at her though her gaze is still locked on the starry sky. The silvery moon reflects into her eyes.

"Do you think we'll ever be able to get out of this Glade?" she asks almost in a whisper.

He furrows his brows at the sudden question. The mood suddenly becomes gloomy. He then sighs quietly.

"I don't know, we have been stuck in here for three years, yet none of us has ever found a way out. But what about the sudden question?" He retorts.

She plays with a lock of her hair, fidgeting her fingers. "Are we really going to spend our life here, get old and finally die within these four walls? I have been asking myself this question quite often". She finally admits, taking out all the negative thoughts she had been holding in and which were devouring her from the inside.

The blondie knows that feeling just too well. The feeling of losing all hope and looking for some comfort between death's arms, in eternal sleep. After all, for that exact same reason, he had gotten his limp.

"Don't you like it here?" he asks, even though he already knows the answer.

"No, it's not that...it's just...I have been wondering how the world is outside. I mean, I got kinda used to living here. This became my everyday life, and you guys became my family. It feels like home..." she sighs "...but it is and it will never be safe here."

"So you wish to leave." Newt cuts her off. A few seconds pass by and none of them dare to speak.

"A part of me doesn't want to leave. I'll really miss our days here. Like Gally's habit of complaining, Alby ordering around, Minho making sassy remarks and Chuck pranking everyone, annoying Gally in particular. But there is a part of me that does want to leave and be free forever. No more Beetle Blade keeping an eye on us, no more closing walls at night, no more Grievers hunting us. No more fear."

Newt nods in agreement "I see what you mean. This is such a klunky situation we are stuck in".

She sighs again and looks him in the eyes again after a long time.

"But you know, freedom always comes at a price. And I am scared of the cost of our freedom," her gaze wanders to the Gladers "If that means losing more of us then I'm ok with dying in here. And what if the outside world is worse than how it is here anyway?"
