Ready for their close-up
We'll call this the first official wildlife photo taken with my new gear. I shot it Friday morning through our back window.
I've taken many turkey photos with my cell phone and, as you know, occasionally post them here. But I never got anything like this.
These five toms were part of a group of maybe 40 males and females gathered in our backyard for a mid-morning mixer.
Generally Michigan's turkeys breed in early spring. Evidently our January thaw has put the toms in a my-fan-is-bigger-than-your-fan mood. The hens remained unimpressed.

Wild Turkey
The wild turkey is an iconic bird for the United States. Found virtually all over the country and into Mexico, turkeys are a large game bird with dark feathers and iridescent bronze-green coloring. Color variations differ out west as white tips can be seen on their tails as well. These birds move in large groups known as flocks. Despite their large size they can still fly short distances if needed.

Everyone knows wild turkeys are quite large.
But if you have the opportunity to get close to one, their size can really startle you.

Wild Turkeys, including a leucistic female (this coloration occurs in approx. 1/100,000 per Audubon).
photos by me, 2024-03-25. A cloudy day at Cornelia Fort Airpark, so I will try another day when the lighting conditions are better, hoping that the leucistic bird is still around.
