What do you think about JYL's relationship with WWX?

This is an interesting one, because the relationship between JYL and WWX is really a thing of two halves: the depth and steadfastness of their love for each other is touching, but the very strength of their relationship has devastating consequences. It's also a great example of each character's core flaw: WWX's arrogance and JYL's partiality for him.

I really do like the fact that JYL and WWX love each other like blood siblings, even to the point of JYL specifically asserting that she sees him as a brother when she defends him at the Phoenix Mountain hunt. JYL is mild-natured, but also a woman of great inner strength despite her parents' best efforts to crush, berate and/or neglect it out of her. And she certainly needs and deserves supportive brothers like JC and WWX, who will both defend and advocate for her.

The trouble is that WWX is really bad at defending her and repeatedly makes things worse when JC on his own would have handled the situation with more grace. JC is clearly reconciling himself to JYL marrying JZX and adjusting his understanding of JZX's character post-Sunshot, and he and WWX even have a discussion in which WWX refuses to listen to him about JZX's self-improvement and the likelihood of a renewed engagement. JC is obviously not a perfect brother, and it's not as though WWX's continued hatred for JZX is based on nothing, but as clan leader JC has the good sense and leadership skills to more effectively navigate such a delicate situation.

As part and parcel of WWX's unintentional but nevertheless very real sabotaging of JC and the Jiang, he talks over JC and acts as though he has greater authority than he actually possesses. JYL and her relationship with JZX is a huge part of that. Yes, things are not going well between JZX and JYL at the Phoenix Mountain hunt, but WWX's intervention only escalates the issue and puts JYL in an even more awkward and humiliating position. It's a testament to her love for WWX and her quiet strength that she's able to gracefully and effectively defend both WWX and the Jiang when WWX's attempts to defend her from JZX have further exposed the Jiang to a loss of reputation.

It's important to remember that WWX himself cringes in retrospect when seeing his arrogant and cocksure behaviour in other scenes through Empathy, so this read isn't coming out of nowhere; it's made explicit in the text. WWX is in many ways the author of his own downfall, and of course poor JYL is quite literally caught in the crossfire. There's multiple references to her face lighting up whenever she sees her brothers, and in a certain sense her love for them gifts her vitality, so it's thematically appropriate and extraordinarily effective that she gives her life for WWX. And thematically appropriate, too, that in her final moments she is completely focused on WWX despite JC also being present.

I've skirted the topic of JC so far in only discussing him in relation to the JZX-JYL relationship, but I do need to address him more directly because it's impossible to talk about WWX and JYL without bringing him in. Poor, poor JC. It's indisputable that JYL loves him, and it's just as indisputable that she loves WWX more than she loves him. In theory, the love is equal. In practice, JYL consistently prioritises WWX and his needs over JC. JC truly does come second in everything, and the image of him holding a seriously injured JYL as she ignores him and focuses all her attention on WWX is absolutely shattering.

And the awful thing is that JC is a better brother to JYL than WWX. JC understands that she is not simply a sister but a woman who has her own wants and needs that diverge from her brothers' hopes for her. JC might not like it, but he respects it. WWX, on the other hand ... Qiongqi Path. His inability to fully respect JYL's choice or update his opinion of JZX results in his literally murdering JZX using WN as the weapon. And yes, WWX is not mentally or physically in great shape at the time, but he's also had numerous and repeated warnings from various characters about the inevitable consequences of the path he's chosen. There are mitigating factors, but WWX ultimately knows himself to be responsible and the text agrees with him.

And JYL still can't hate him. She can't tell him it's all right or that she forgives him, but she doesn't stop loving him either. And this is exactly why their relationship, while profound and touching, is ultimately a damaging one. It never develops beyond its original well-meaning but immature dynamic, and this is the consequence. WWX still acts like a small child with JYL, and also like he has the right to intervene in her life. Meanwhile she still mothers him and overlooks his transgressions, even though she's probably the one person he might actually listen to. They're both locked in old patterns that were established to cope with the challenges of their shared childhood, and neither of them adjust the relationship to account for the changes in their roles and circumstances—until it's far too late.

what does this scene mean, and why is it here?

i, personally, love it. jl says (well, thinks) it himself -- he has all the reasons to hate wwx, wn and jgy and blame them for the deaths of his parents. note that this is after he finds out about jgy’s involvement! he could easily go “i used to hate wn and wwx as the villains who killed my parents and love jgy as the uncle who gave me fairy, but now i see i had it all wrong and i should love them and hate him instead”. he doesn’t do that though. he still groups them all together, still grapples with anger, pain and hatred, and still finds that he can’t hate any of them.

and he struggles with it! he really does, to the point of bursting into tears. this is not just jc’s fault, before anyone tries anything -- the entire world jianghu seems to be into the idea that every bad thing that happens has a Bad Person who caused it and needs to be punished and reviled. first it was wrh, then wwx, now jgy. and later probably someone else. but here, jl learns a (very painful) lesson -- sometimes things aren’t so easy as “X is 100% bad”, or even “X is 75% bad, but even that is enough to condemn them”, OR even “X is 67% bad, but being 1/3rd Good they should have known better and GROW BETTER”.

sometimes people are people.

so what does this scene tell us about jgy? well, sect leader yao hurries with an explanation: jl shouldn’t cry, jgy isn’t worth it, and in fact, crying is for pussies; real men know what’s right and what’s wrong, and-- wait, no? is that not what we’re supposed to think? why is jin ling shouting at this kind senior who kindly offers advice?

well, perhaps because sect leader yao isn’t the best source there is.

but really -- that’s the question: is jl wrong, and sly right? is jl wrong to see Nuance in people, to realize that life is not as easy as finding a villain to blame, avenging your family and basking in the glow of satisfaction? or is he a manipulated victim who can’t see how horrible their abuser was, even when faced with proof of it all?

this is perhaps the last scene “featuring” jgy, not counting the one with people talking in the inn in the last chapter. in the previous chapter, wwx lays it all out in front of lwj, lxc and nhs: the explanation of what jgy wanted to do in the temple, the possible reason why he organized the burial mounds party. that’s it, that’s the end, we don’t really need anything more. if anything, it could be jc to lead the narration pov, looking at jl with fairy and thinking about this man who gave his nephew a puppy and turned out to have been a monster all this time. this, again, doesn’t happen.

Then, after some time, jl ends up asking lsz if he really loves him, because of the way he looks at ljy he has this something in his eyes. After some nervous turning around the subject, lsz finally admits he does /also/ love ljy, the same way he does jl. but lsz doesn't dare tell him, because he's sure ljy doesn't feel the same.

jl ends up telling him he doesn't mind sharing if it make him happier. Especially since it is clear ljy is also pining for lsz, but had noticed their little "secret" relationship and didn't dare step in. Turns out lsz is happily surprised and gets himself a second boyfriend, jl and ljy slowly develop their own brand of love.

So they now start this new poly couple, rather happy with how thing seems to work. But now that they are often only the three of them most of the time, they feel like they are missing someone all the time.

Then they realise that maybe, they didn't see oyzz as just a friend. They also feel a bit guilty for having left him so much to the side as they were trying to make this whole new thing work. lsz is the one to come up to oyzz to talk about it to him, as the two others didn't know how to bring it up to him. 

oyzz doesn't really know what to answer to this, as he never really thought about it in the past. He /does/ have a little something for lsz tho "now that he's thinking about it", but doesn't know if he should join them. He does, and things turn out even better than before. 

They are back to being the juniors quartet, but this time as lovers, even though most obviously don't know. Some days a more difficult, sometimes communication is hard, but they would rather not give it up for anything in the world, they absolutely like it the way it is. 

I also wonder how the parents would all react.

I'd see jc going "Really jl, /another/ boyfriend? I suppose at least this time he's not a plan, shouldn't be too troublesome". Yet he doesn't try to break them off anyway, as he would rather see his nephew happy than sad because he tried to break them off.

wn is over the moon that lsz is surrounded by so many people who love him that much. Although even this sweet cinnamon bun has warned one time that they shouldn't dare to break his heart. All three hurriedly agreed. 

lwj would be the silently supportive dad, ready to listen and give advice despite easy relationships not being his department. All he can wish for is for none of them to suddenly disappear on him for 13 years.

wwx isn't sure at first how come baby a-yuan is collecting this many boyfriends, but is just as supportive, ready to help them out. He's the dad ready to bring up the most embarrassing thing simply because he's trying his best to help his son out. If he can make sure lsz is not as lost as he was, then it would be this already won. 

I cannot tell what oyzz dad would say, but if he were to not be supportive of his son, oyzz is made quickly aware that he already has a new family ready to support him whatever happens with him (my hurt/comfort ass don't like oyzz dad, so it would probably not be a good react) but oyzz is better off with all these other cultivators ready to support him than him anyway.

Unpopular opinion: YZY shouldn’t have died at the Massacre of Lotus Pier. Why?

Because she deserved to suffer even more.

Maybe this is just me feeling particularly salty today but I also feel ready to bash my head into a wall after seeing way too many posts stanning YZY as some tragic martyr when to me, she is a shit stain that should’ve never touched Yunmeng Jiang to begin with.

This revolting woman abused a child who was left to starve and fight against wild dogs on the street, simply because he’s the son of a dead woman who allegedly used to have a thing with her husband (whom she also abuses verbally & emotionally) that she forcibly married. Who hurts him because she knows she can damn well get away with it.

This pathetic womanchild went out of her way to make this child’s life miserable simply because he had the audacity to exist under the same roof as her. Who can hold power over him, when she could never mean shit to his mother.

This insufferable woman, who has a position & power she absolutely does not deserve, becomes nothing but a poison that erodes not only her own family, but an entire sect, hell, an entire legacy altogether.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy for WWX. I am so proud that he never let this womanchild beat him down and that he’s perfectly capable of letting go of the past to enjoy his (much-deserved) content future with his husband. Hell, him deciding to let go of his life involving YZY so easily was probably one of the best middle fingers to give to the woman who always screamed at everyone about her supposed grievances.

But personally, the salty vindictive voice in my head can’t help but wish she had faced worse consequences. 

It would’ve been so satisfying if she could’ve also been present during the Golden Core Reveal scene so LWJ & WN could also give her the much deserved ‘reason you suck’ speech. It would’ve been satisfying seeing her forced to watch the child she resented oh so much achieve the happiness she can never have. It would’ve been cathartic to see JGY, the ‘son of a whore’ call her out on her classist views and remind her that if it wasn’t for her family name, she’d be no better than WLJ. It would’ve been glorious for WWX to walk away from her because she no longer holds any power/authority over him & any ‘debt’ remaining between them is moot.

Alas, canonically, she’s dead. She’s gone and she can’t hurt anyone anymore. She’s gone and eventually, she’ll fade away and her memory will die like the insect she’s named after. Saltiness aside, I can live with that too.

Apothecary Diaries | WN Translation | Arc 9 - Chapter 14

Chapter 14 | Festival

The chapter opens with a rustling sound being heard from the entrance of the tent. Once Maomao opens her eyes, Chue had returned (from the festival) with food.

“This is for (you), Maomao-san.”

Maomao thanks her. As narrator she goes on saying that Chue places a tallow candlestick on the carpet - it had a strangely delicious smell which, Maomao gathers, is because it might be made from animal ingredients.

Chue had brought along two sets of each dish, plus new soup, placing everything around the candle. The food was made with potatoes and other ingredients they had on hand, but it turned out to be quite luxurious.

Maomao pats her stomach, she’d had a good night’s sleep so she was hungry.

Chue then tells her that the festival was well-received by everyone and Maomao says that that’s good to hear.

Chue goes on saying that now everyone’s eating, drinking and feeling good “Just like that.”

Our narrator tells us that stringed instruments and singing can be heard from outside the tent. While the whole thing felt like an afterthought/a spur-of-the-moment affair, she’s glad it worked itself out as a proper festival in its own way.

Chue says that she’ll go about telling Maomao the impression of every dish one by one, Maomao says “Please.”

Like before, they somehow end up sitting straight, facing one another, looking at the food that’s laid out.

The first Chue goes over is “roasted sweet potatoes, like the name suggests, they’re just that” and Maomao’s like “Yes.”

Both types of potatoes were roasted. However, since they were baked under the supervision of a professional potato expert (Lahan-nii), they were more moist and delicious than if Chue had simply cut them up and roasted them over an open fireplace.

Chue notes that they have a nice honey color - Maomao says that they still have some flakes left.

“Sweet potatoes were popular among women and children. The men preferred potatoes with *milk* cheese.” - Chue fills Maomao in, who adds that “We prepared milk with added salt.”. Which would’ve helped to stir up their appetites.

Chue asks “How do you make that?” and Maomao’s like “Oh, that is” - letting us know that Chue’s wondering about “the viscous mass”.

Chue fills us in that at first no one ate that, because it gave them the creeps. It wasn’t until after she herself had put some on a piece of pan and ate it that the villagers began imitating her.

Maomao adds that it was also her first time seeing the dish, out loud, and that Lahan-nii made it.

As narrator she explains that you have to steam, peel and mash the potatoes. After that the mashed potatoes were mixed with cheese and pieces of smoked meat, as well as seasoned with salt.

Chue, I think, says that the dish would go even better if they had some green pepper - but Maomao argues that green pepper is a lil too expensive for common people.

As she munches, Maomao grabbed some soup (it should be her).

She asks “Who made this?” and Chue explains that when they ran out of soup, Lahan-nii would improvise. Aka, the remaining boiled sweet potatoes were crushed and added to the leftover soup from home. Cow’s milk and salt were added to adjust the taste. She says that he also added leaves, but has to inquire about what those were.

Maomao explains “Ah, that’s an aromatic herb. There was some growing on the way here.”, then she snorts - causing Chue to give her a look with half-lidded eyes.

“I heard that some people were making a fuss about not having enough medicine a few days ago.” - Chue says, but Maomao counters that “Herbs are more of a seasoning than a medicine.”

Narrator-Mao’s like “Anyway, let’s see how the soup tastes.”

Maomao says that it’s good, considering it was improvised and Chue agrees, saying that she’d like to try it at home in the future.

Maomao then thinks something along the lines of “Lahan-nii’s waste of talents is way too effective” based on the kanji.

As narrator she guesses that, since he’s such a jack-of-all-trades, he/they probably didn’t think there was anything noteworthy about him (or that he himself was too clumsy to notice) - as well as that it/he is actually very convenient.

Maomao then kinda says and repeats that one line from a while ago about how nice it would’ve been if he was born into a normal/good family.

Chue agrees with “Yes, he’s an unfortunate gentleman/man.”

They just kept talking about him without knowing his name.

Another dish he prepped is made of sweet potatoes, which were mashed, then kneaded with milk and the mix was roasted. The outside is coated with egg yolk and browned.

Chue repeats that sweet potatoes were popular with kids.

Maomao in turn says that he could’ve made them with starch syrup made from sweet potato instead of white yam - but as the narrator notes that unfortunately making starch syrup takes too much time.

She goes on thinking “Isn’t there malt sugar too?” and adds, as narrator that, although starch syrup is made from malt, it also uses sticky rice as an ingredient. Hence, it couldn’t be produced in this region where there’s no rice.

In addition there’s another dish made of cut up potatoes that are stir-fried with smoked meat and other vegetables. That was then seasoned with little bits of herbs and salt. The salty flavor seemed to be popular with men.

Chue then brings up another dish “Oh, this one was popular with the wives. They asked Lahan-nii how to make it.”

What Chue’s picking up with her chopsticks is sweet potato mochi. For that, the potatoes are mashed, kneaded and mixed with flour. Salt is then added and they’re baked with dried cheese. Since they’re cooked with buttermilk instead of oil they have a much nicer scent.

Chue adds that the wives seem to like the unique texture and the way the cheese stretches when freshly baked. She then goes on eating the mochi, causing cheese to flow from it.

Chue goes on noting - while eating - that given all the dairy products and meat.. The fact that they can use it as much as they like, is a strength. In Hisashi-shū those are luxuries. She then asks if “When it comes to potatoes, the combination and ingredients are.. suitable, aren’t they?”

She also adds that they were glad they could match it with everything - but then admits that not everyone was served fish.

Narrator-Mao fills us in that it’s apparently for religious reasons.

In her head Maomao’s like “Even though the river’s nearby”, but recognizes as narrator that, while a waste, it can’t be helped.

Once she’s done eating most of the food, she checks in with Chue.

Whether it’s a god or ritual, Chue doesn’t think they’ll listen to her or Maomao. From the get-go the imitation of the ritual was a farce.

And, speaking of reality– (Not sure about that one)

“Do you think the villagers got greedy?”

“Yes, they had a good appetite.” Chue sips from her milk tea and laughs.

Narrator-Mao goes on with the fact that the biggest problem of this village is its simplicity. They generally have no motivation and will be satisfied as long as they can keep up a certain living standard.

They don’t work because even if there’s no harvest they’ll have their bare minimum livelihoods secured.

Since they have no material desires, they don’t want more. They’re satisfied with just what they’ve been given.

That’s why they/Maomao decided to serve a dish the villagers never had before - trying to make it as easy as possible by only using the materials available in the village.

The next line is either about Maomao’s group not knowing the villagers taste hence they tried as many varieties as possible - or about the villagers not knowing what would be to their tastes so they tried the most varieties.

Maomao thinks that so long as they have certain ingredients, they can eat this anytime.

Those *ingredients* are sweet potatoes and potatoes.

In other words, if they have those two things, they can recreate this entire feast Maomao’s group prepared today.

Chue then says that the village chief asked her how much he could buy it (potatoes) for. Maomao asks what Lahan-nii said.

Chue says that it seems like Lahan-nii doesn’t know much about accounting, so she informed him (chief?) of the transportation cost.

Maomao kinda teases aloud that in this aspect Lahan-nii doesn’t look much like his brother.

As narrator she notes that she believes she can hear a voice immediately say “I was born first!”.. but maybe that was just her imagination.

Chue explains that when the chief heard the price he was shocked, stunned and disappointed at the cost. Maomao’s like “I’m sure.”

But. “That’s why Chue-san put on a masterful performance and looked at him with compassion like a fairy and said-”

~ Can’t you at least share some seed potatoes for a lower price? ~

In her head Maomao praises Chue for understanding so well. (the whole plot & what to do to make it happen)

Narrator-Mao explains that - If they were to give away the potatoes for free, it’s gonna be alms for the villagers again. They may also start hoping they’ll keep getting them for free. It’s important that they (MM’s group) take at least some money from them.

“And if they have leftover potatoes you can sell them and get salt.”

The large amount of salt used is probably one of the reasons why the dish is highly rated - because the more seasonings you use, the better the quality of the meal will be.

Maomao asks if he (the chief?) didn’t find it troublesome to make the potatoes but Chue explains that “As for growing potatoes, Lahan-nii said that once you’ve planted them, they don’t take much work.”

Maomao argues that the issue is cultivating land - Chue just says “Yes” and smiles.

She adds. “It seems we’ll be planting on the new land Nenshin just cultivated.”

They had connected the festival/ritual with the potatoes.

Chue explains that “It looks like the land was originally used as a field by the serfs. They couldn’t afford wheat, so they only cultivated the land in autumn (akiko). However, as a condition, I asked them (villagers) to dispose of the locusts.

“As expected of you, Chue-san.” - Maomao claps her hands.

Chue goes on with the fact that Lahan-nii immediately taught them (villagers) how to process the seed potatoes. But, he said he’d need plant ash, so Chue asks if the ash here is fine.

Maomao can only counter that she thinks it’s alright.

As narrator saying that the ashes in the fireplace are made from burning sheep dung. Sheep dung is made from grass, so it’ll probably work out.

So far, Narrator-Mao adds, things have gone well. As for the desire of the villagers—

In her mind Maomao wonders if the potatoes will prevail. Adding, as narrator, that she thinks the potatoes are probably okay. That’s why they had prepared so many potato dishes.

When it comes to sweet potatoes, her guess is that it’s 50/50. Even if they can harvest it, it’ll be decreasing - however, if they can grow them with little care it’s worth it.

Because, Mind-Mao notes, sweetness is a luxury item here.

She has high hopes for the kids that were stuffing their faces with sweet potatoes.

And, even if sweet potatoes don’t become established, so long as potatoes are, their planting will compensate for the (missing) amount of sweet potatoes.

Mind-Mao hopes it will go well.

The chapter ends with her having a sip of milk tea.

| Notes & Chapter 15

Just a couple things.

- We're back to the og post format. This involves everything that's said in the actual chapters, but for reading flow I add clarifiers etc. It's basically written how I'd tell a friend what's happening line by line.

Why's that? I've been meaning to explain that the jap writing system is quite different. The usual max is 3-4 sentences, then a new paragraph. Often text is split with "." instead of commas or other means we use on a daily basis.

It makes it difficult to keep track or read without it feeling like bullet points when you're not used to it. Same goes for figuring out who's talking, etc.

A fourth of my time is spent on figuring out who's talking more than actually translating xD Sometimes you need the full chapter to go "Ah, I got it now"

- The back and forth between ritual & festival stems from it being pretty much that way in the story. Sometimes they're clearly referring to a festival, other times it's a ritual.

- Which leads me into a summary explanation of what's going on in these last few chaps. The wind-reading tribe made people believe it's a ritual, while it's more of a.. tradition for crop's sake. In the last & this chapter Maomao & gang tried to make the current villagers believe in it being a ritual for a god so they'll play along.

Everything in these chapters is them trying to manipulate the villagers into moving their own butts to make a living, in short short.

- Not all the dishes are named, that part's as confusing to me as it probably is to you.

- The lines about Lahan-nii were hard for me to translate. Maomao basically notes the same things as before. He's sold under worth, born in the wrong family, but to her causes that's actually convenient.

I'm aware that this comes across as quite shitty, arguably most of the relationships are.. quite shady, the last number of chaps especially, but in her head and based on the kanji usage she actually thinks these.. rude things quite highly of him. The bond in the kanji is pretty similar to how she used to be with Jinshi. Cold and rough but deep down there's actual admiration, etc.

Leigh, I'm so sorry to burden you with this, but I've followed you for a few years and witnessed how supportive you've been with SuperCorp fans and the shared disappointment with how the show ended, so I feel safe writing to you.

All the WLW shows getting cancelled fucking sucks. And it hurts. Not because I've necessarily been a big fan of them all, but simply because my voice and story, as a consumer and queer woman, doesn't feel valued.

When I heard Netflix cancelled Warrior Nun, I got angry, and I've been so ever since. It somehow hit different this time, and the cancellation doesn't make sense to me. I've loved the show since its first day on Netflix in 2020. I fell in love with the characters and the actors who portrayed them. I fell in love with the story they were telling and how it was told. Something about Warrior Nun just felt different to me.

Now it's almost 7 in the morning where I live, and I haven't been able to sleep. I was reading a Warrior Nun fic - as one does - and then all the feelings suddenly hit me. Angry turned into sad, and I feel sort of silly for admitting this, but I actually cried. I read somewhere that the brain can't differentiate real people from fictional ones, and I think I'm kind of mourning the loss of the characters 🤷🏻‍♀️ I've never felt this way before and I honestly don't know what to do about it. The whole situation just sucks.

Do you have any advice on how the consumers can be heard by big companies like Netflix and how we can get them to actually value their WLW shows?

Again, I'm sorry to lay this on you, but I don't really have anyone to talk to about this, and I'm just sick and tired of the situation and needed to rant.

It's not a burden at all, I'm glad you feel this is a safe space. 💜

Everything you're saying is relatable and valid as heck. When a show means the world to you, especially if you're part of a marginalized group and taking hit after hit after hit no less... it can be exhausting, infuriating, demoralizing, and so many other complicated emotions when you lose that art that struck you so deeply, that you related to, and that you looked forward to more of to get you through life.

To be honest, I feel like for the most part, fans are doing as best they can as far as efforts to keep shows around. There really are no more tangible specific solutions for fans aside from what's being done, and that's what's frustrating. The endless rewatches, fans doing street team style spreading the word on their own (even spending a lot of money) to make up for lack of official marketing, getting influencers and press behind them, etc. It's actually a sad state of affairs that in recent years, LGBTQ fans have WORK, and FIGHT and PUSH and even PAY constantly to keep a wlw show on the air or to try to get someone to make a ship canon after queerbaiting, or to get more screen time or respectful exploration for a wlw pairing, or to make TPTB see how bad the bury your gays trope is (time and again and again), etc -- rather than just sit back and watch and enjoy.

Fans shouldn't have to work so hard for entertainment, and yet queer fans so often do. And even when people successfully give a show solid numbers, sometimes it's still not enough, and like WN, a well-reviewed, heavily watched series gets the axe anyway.

So it's not on the fans. It's on those at the top, at the end of the day.

Alas, if I had to make some kind of a suggestion... all I can think to say is on the macro, bigger picture level. And this will take some self reflection and increased empathy for some people (sadly a thing some may not be capable of). But... collectively, some people in fandom spaces (small portions, but loud ones) for wlw shows have got to try to stop the silly fanon vs canon wars, and gatekeeping, and jealousies, and creating unnecessary drama and toxicity. There really should be no rival fandoms in wlw spaces at all, unless a show has a fully wlw love triangle or something and people are Team Ship 1 vs Team Ship 2, lol, but even still -- it should be a 'fun' battle, not a toxic war that hurts real people, drives away viewership, etc.

If most people in queer fandoms stuck together, and respected each other's ships even if they don't ship it or watch the show, and generally were supportive of each other as fellow queer fans in their battles against cancellations, in demanding queerbait to be made canon, fighting the BYG trope, etc -- LGBTQ fandoms would have such a collective, expanded power behind these positive efforts. And either way, even if all efforts fail to save a show, etc, at the very least, it would help create a safer, healthier space for queer fans online.

And I know, asking toxic people to not be toxic seems futile, but some people simply need to be reminded that we're all in this together and working together is always going to be ideal when facing off against the real opposition: corporate bias / phobia in the media / industry space.

Ultimately, it's 100% on TPTB at the shows and networks/streamers/studios to do better -- at times creatively, and other times as far as marketing efforts. Sometimes both.

But in the meantime, as far as fandom spaces, some LGBTQ fans gotta try to learn to stick together as much as possible. While there will ALWAYS be toxicity in every fandom from all backgrounds, and fans cannot control each other, I am noticing that as time goes on, and as more wlw fandoms get hurt by networks and streamers, the more angry people are understandably getting, the more reactive and protective of their shows and ships people are getting, and the more then they lash out and try to gatekeep and attack their fellow queer fans and allies, which is... just not it. It's counter productive.

Point is... fans are doing all they can IMO as far as tangible efforts to save (or fix) certain shows. And the rest is on the creatives, the networks and streamers, etc. But in the meantime, at the very least, people shouldn't attack true allies who have proven their support, nor especially attack fellow queer fans who just want to see what a show or ship is about or make positive parallels to their other faves, etc as it could be extra viewers for the show that they're running off.

TLDR: Stay focused on the real problem: corporate media's bias / phobia. Fight them collectively, not each other.

Most posts aren't aimed at/about CQL/The Untamed, which is why I never use the tag. I never finished it & don't want to catfish a whole nother fanbase.

The only exception to the rule above are the songs, which I've always been fond of. So, if you notice characterization in any variant of any char that feels related: this is why.

All posts are based on novel canon, but they're rarely to never a direct reflection of or link to it - reason why is that the posts stem from a point of dissatisfaction with canon.

Based on above: all posts are AU's (modern or not), Fix-It's, Headcanon's, Canon Divergences & the likes.

This is not me hating on canon, I simply have other priorities, options, etc than MXTX. I'm not her, her base exists, I just do my thing with it - or that of people that request things, to the best of my abilties at the time.

While there are certain key elements of the chars that I'll always implement, it rarely ever happens that 2 posts of mine share the same exact base for virtually anything - from motivations, goals, relationships, trauma healing stages, etc.

As I'm actively trying to distance from canon to create a safe space for all chars & ships, please keep the points above in mind.

In short: canon is canon, this ain't canon. This a space for love, healing & peace.

Please note that I'm not pushing anything into canon, I honestly don't even ship anything in canon/with the full canon base - no, not even WangXian.

The list of the following ships weren't chosen by me, they just planted themselves in my head & haven't left since: XiCheng, NHS/WN, WQ/NMJ, JXY/JL.

The ships mentioned are just the one's that come/came naturally to me, however, I get ideas for whatever - also WangXian. I don't mind any ship, really, my strong point's m/m though.

Requests

As I'm trying to reclaim my "safe space" zone, please note that you can send me any sort of request anytime - through dm, anon, etc.

I have few to no triggers/no go's: shady consent (reason why I don't ship WX), actual bloodline inces* & adult/minor (age of consent is 16 in my country, so that's what I'm used to). If you request something that technically involves a base like that (WX, JGY/QS etc as examples) just know that I'll automatically adjust it to something more appropriate.

So far I haven't turned down a single request, so don't worry about stuff like thinking it's silly or whatever.

Please note that I'm rather bad at keeping writings short, my stuff's mostly 1.2k+ words & that's leaving out a lot that can be left out without sabotaging anything too much.

Some things that are usually a standard in my stuff:

As long as it's not necessary, the most amount of chars as possible will be alive - esp if it's a modern AU, don't expect unnecessary orphans.

WWX, in my head, if not specified otherwise, looks like YLP!WWX

In a load of my stuff WWX & JC aren't related at all, never were.

The chars vary from canon in varying degrees, depending on the base - as my thing is to handle the trauma, make them grow, etc. Also, because often times the plots either de-traumatizes the chars or they mess with them in different ways.

(this post will not be tagged, it's just a precaution given how heated different parts of the fandom are.)

1. a littol skip forwards to the moment where jc is telling wgxn off for burning incense in the jiang clan’s ancestor shrine. jc calls lwj a 乱七八糟的人 luànqībāzāo de rén, someone who’s

and exr translated that as “unwelcome”, but in japanese the word used is ろくでもない (roku de mo nai)-- useless, worthless. it seems that it wasn’t that jc didn’t want lwj in his house, rather, he considered him, like... trash. now i’m not surprised wwx got so pissed! jc has every right to say he doesn’t want wwx and lwj in his ancestor hall, considering they’re strangers! but personally insulting lwj is something else for wwx.

2. lol, in his “you don’t know? well then i’ll tell you” speech, jiang cheng calls lwj “lan-er-gongzi” in chinese, but 蓝公子殿 (ran-koushi-dono) in japanese; he’s not only already calling him a gongzi but ALSO adding the -dono honorific, the same lsz used for wen ning. and the thing about japanese insults is that the basic ones are simply ex-honorific terms: for example, kisama, a very rude term currently meaning “son of a bitch, bastard”, kanji-wise means “esteemed one”. so basically, jc is taking the “you (derogatory)” joke and amping it up to eleven.

ooh and again! he calls wen ning and lwj “ofutakata” which is a respectful, polite term for “two people”. in the very next sentence he calls wn an enemy and a wen dog. i love him

3. this is a minor thing but in exr jiang cheng has never suspected wwx would have “ambiguous” ties with other men -- in japanese it’s 理解不能 (rikai funou), “impossible to understand”.

*has impossible to understand thoughts about this scene and jc*

4. in a similar vein, jiang cheng says “he’s never seen friends (acting) like that” and i am just. sitting there. very sadly sitting

5. oh hey, right after the part where wwx, bleeding, tells lwj “let’s go”, the next two lines are about “going” and “never returning here again”. exr has them like (does my best not to read it in a gollum voice) “go and never come back”, sounding like a sort-of quote from jc. but in the japanese edition, they’re... not explicitly wwx’s thoughts, because they’re not in round brackets, but they’re phrased as “let’s go now. and (let’s) never return again”

in the original chinese, i think there’s just context, so. a mystery!

6. speaking of bleeding, cql has wwx subtly bleed from his nose, but he’s actually bleeding both from his mouth and nose... wwx, just how fucked up mxy’s core is/how much this whole interaction fucked you up, hm? buddy :-(

7. lwj says “move!” angrily in the cn version, harshly in the exr translation, but he bellows (怒号 dogou) in the japanese version and i love it

8. speaking of bellowing! wen ning first tells jiang cheng to 抜いてください (nuite kudasai, please unsheathe it). but when jc doesn’t, and threatens him instead, wn uses Impolite, Direct Speech and says 早く抜け！ (hayaku nuke!, take it out! now!) and although for the rest of his speech he keeps the polite word endings, still!! wow!!!

9. in exr, wn says that jiang cheng “passed a stone forest” on his way to the mountain top, and indeed the hanzi say so: 石林 shílín, 石 -- stone, 林 -- forest. However if you actually google it, 石林 is

a limestone formation! in japanese, the word used is 巨石, literally “giant rock(s)”. so, rather than passing through a mysteriously-sounding “stone forest”, jiang cheng bumped into a forest of gigantic rock formations, and he tried to walk around it for an hour before he finally managed to pass through!

10. oh, i won’t check the original novel because i cba, but in the exr translation, “the night was silent, and the river’s flow was heavy” and i just ??? what does the second part of this sentence MEAN. well, in japanese, they’re both silent/quiet. “the river flowed quietly in the silence of the night”, or something like that. another bonus to reading the japanese version: i do sort of speak this language and can check sentences that i didn’t fully understand/weren’t sure of in english. hehe

Day 30: P̷r̷o̷s̷t̷i̷t̷u̷t̷i̷o̷n̷ / [Fucking Machine] / H̷a̷t̷e̷ ̷S̷e̷x̷

Jiang Cheng didn't know what to expect upon entering Wei Wuxian and Mo Xuanyu room. A weird machine was not on the list of possibilities.

Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes as Wei Wuxian made grand gestures to show the small studio, which he was sharing with his shy roommate Mo Xuanyu. The shy roommate only blushed when he greeted him with a smile and replied shyly.

But jc couldn't hide how excited he was, it had been weeks since they last saw each other and he was overjoyed when wwx suggested he stay over for a while now that it was his school break.

After all, there was no one home anyway, it was better to stay with wwx and he might make a new friend. 

The first day went all great, finally able to catch up and even learn a bit more about mxy (he was surprised to hear he was related to the peacock too).

He felt a bit bad tho since wwx insisted on him taking his bed while he and mxy would simply share the other one, but the two roommates seemed more than happy to share the bed.

It's on the second that jc found something weird. He was pretty used to wwx peculiar machines and creation. But this one had him a bit flustered when he realised what it was.

A fucking machine with a weird-looking dildo on it (he pushed to the back of his mind that he knew it was probably some monster dick). The thing was even painted pink.

He acted as if it was nothing, trying not to think about either of them /using it/. But when wwx went out to grab the food he ordered as they waited for mxy to be back from work, curiosity got the best of him.

He found it again, pulling it more towards the centre of the room. It took a moment but he managed to find how to turn on the thing and jumped when he did so, not expecting for it to be /this strong/. How was anyone using this with that toy?!

But he did wonder how it would feel, it had been a while since he last had sex with someone.

He jumped again when he heard wwx voice yelling that they were back. How was he so fast?! He tried to quickly shut it off, only to have wwx open the door when he did just so.

“Would you look at that, chengcheng snooping around, were you curious" wwx teased as he walked in, mxy on his heel looking interested. 

Jc couldn't look up at them, feeling his face burning from embarrassment. He wished the ground would swallow him up right now.

“Cheng-ge can try if he wants to" mxy suggested excitedly, wwx grinning even more when he saw jc blush reach his neck now. “Ah, but we need to change the toy or we will hurt him" pointed out mxy as he walked across the room, finding a box filled with a fake dick that could be used with it. 

It took only a little bit of convincing for jc to accept, but he ended up doing so as he was feeling horny now and curious about the machine.

He simply asked not to be the only one naked, a bit surprised when mxy was so readily taking off his clothes, revealing cute panties underneath it.

He was nearly stripped down by mxy who had come to him to help him relax while wwx was taking care of putting everything into place. He ended up making out with the not-so-shy anymore mxy, feeling himself relax a bit with that.

hhhhh god the first person pov was. at first. i rly dont like first person pov but the best way to use first person pov is an unreliable narrator trope and it works so well here. chi nan is rly truly dense/maybe in denial? low self-esteem? but he rly doesn't know when ppl like him and even all of salinger's gentleness just goes over his head like ur so nice to ur fanboy salinger-oppa but that's also part of why salinger has grown to love him so much. like some parts were? p obvious to the readers prob? like when salinger wrote wish it is love and had a second helmet made but chi nan is just like, wow that's nice ge! and i am there like, salinger is prob falling in love w u, u silly boy

soul vibration really is the perfect title for them, what salinger and chi nan have rly could be described as simply as "soul vibration". the series of fate-like coincidences, the way their tacit understanding just forms so naturally, as if they were two halves of a whole just waiting for the other to come to them... tbh with the way salinger treated his past lovers and music and how his confession would be "would you start a band with me?", he somewhat reminds me of the 52hz whale, living in this world with no one else quite on the same frequency as he is. but then comes chi nan, who loves him, who loves his music, loves rock, and the text doesn't say it, but i really do wonder if this is salinger's "first love", in a way

i also like the romantic, whimsical, poetic, yet melancholic vibe that permeates the whole story, told in chi nan's rose-colored filter of his idol salinger, the admiration that has turned to love somewhere but is untold, maybe because chi nan doesn't quite know when it became love or doesn't admit it due to a mental block, his concern over his hearing loss and how he lives every day like it's going to be his last to be embraced by music

it's full of vibes is like a crap way to describe this wn but it rly do be full of vibes. mb bc it's in the pov of a songwriter but the prose is filled w metaphors of an ordinary sort of beauty that could be turned into art bc that's how inspiration is, how something so trivial could become a muse... it's the sort of story that evokes something like an image as simple as the first ray of sunlight of a dawn breaking through the night, in between tall skyscrapers of an indifferent concrete forest, but also the silent roar of a blackhole spinning endlessly in the depths of the universe as a new star is born in a different corner... im just rambling at this point lmao

the vague happy ending told in post-ending extras, just enough to give a taste of what happens but not elaborated enough that it gives a lot of room for readers to imagine what happens after...

What I Disliked

dr solo and ending the story just as they get together /crying

more abt the tl, but there r like plenty of grammar mistakes n typos. via lactea i believe u can do better.
