Instead, when I do promote the use of menstrual cups, I do it as a way to better understand your body and as an additional choice regarding your reproductive health. We all know those choices are hard to come by. That said, there are multiple privileges involved in expanding the number of choices one has, given that in many parts of the world, access to basic sanitary products still remains unattained due to cost, lack of information, social stigma, etc. For example, if you live in a community in which there is a high level of social stigma around menstruation and related cultural and religious beliefs, then even if you’ve been given a menstrual cup for free, disposing the blood and cleaning the cup at regular intervals will be a huge challenge and quite difficult to manage in a discreet way.

With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We must build a connection to the ocean that is inclusive, innovative, and informed by lessons from the past.

Action is needed to save people, animals and the planet

Countless animals in Ukraine are still left stranded and in desperate need of aid due to the severe flooding disaster ensuing from the Kakhovka dam being blown up.

In the grips of this disaster zone, thousands of homes remain underwater, and there are fears of infectious, water-borne diseases spreading. As Network for Animals have stated; “We must continue our rescue efforts!”

As St. Francis Of Assisi said, “If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”

The collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine is one of the biggest industrial and ecological disasters in Europe for decades. As CNN reported:

The catastrophe has destroyed entire villages, flooded farmland, deprived tens of thousands of people of power and clean water, and caused massive environmental damage.

The damage is also affecting the area north of the reservoir, where water levels are falling. 

The collapse has left 94% of irrigation systems in Kherson, 74% in Zaporizhzhia and 30% in Dnipro regions “without a source of water,” according to the Ukrainian Agricultural Ministry.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant also lies upstream from the destroyed dam. The reservoir supplies cooling water to the plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station, and is crucial for its safety. 

The plant is under Russian control, which has been a major source of anxiety for the Ukrainians, still scared by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which still casts its long shadow across Eastern Europe and the rest of the world.

As the BBC reported in 2019, the events at Chernobyl were covered up by the secretive Soviet authorities at the time but the true number of deaths and illnesses caused by the nuclear accident are only now becoming clear.

The BBC also reported back in February 2023, how in June 2022, satellite images captured hundreds of craters made by artillery shells and a 40m-wide (131 ft) hole left by a bomb in fields around the village of Dovhenke, in eastern Ukraine. 

It is just one site left scarred by Russia's invasion of its neighbour. And as the war continues to wreak a devastating humanitarian toll on the people caught up in the fighting, the conflict is leaving a far less obvious, toxic legacy on the land itself.

Amongst the pockmarked landscape and burned-out buildings of Dovhenke, heavy metals, fuel and chemical residues from ammunition and missiles have seeped into the soil.

The Ukrainian government has asked the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to help it assess the environmental damage being done by the conflict. 

Preliminary monitoring by the agency and its partners suggest that urban and rural landscapes could be left with a "toxic legacy for generations to come".

Pensar meio ambiente não é só lidar com plantas, crédito de carbono, qualidade do ar e da água. É pensar em pessoas. E quando pensamos na pessoa que trabalha, esta precisar estar em um ambiente seguro, justo e seguramente pronto para tornar o trabalho produtivo.

Como ghost writer, pesquisei e escrevi sobre o assunto: Saúde e Segurança do Trabalho e o famoso ESG.

Nunca se ouviu tanto falar da tríade Meio Ambiente, Social e Governança, sigla do ASG ou ESG (do inglês Environmental, Social and Governance). E não é para menos: estamos vivendo um mundo desafiador, nos debruçando em questões sobre saúde física e mental, especialmente após três anos intensos de pandemia da Covid-19. E os trabalhadores e empresas estão atentos a esse conceito: o “Panorama ESG Brasil 2023”, divulgado em abril pela Amcham (Câmara Americana de Comércio) e a startup Humanizadas, ouviu 574 executivos, 70% de médias e grandes corporações. Resultado: mais da metade das empresas deseja capacitar seus colaboradores (62%) para essa cultura, bem como desenvolver a diversidade e inclusão (58%), além de adotar políticas de remuneração justa (51%). “Ainda assim, só 20% priorizam investimentos a partir de critérios ESG e 16% utilizam certificações ou avaliações de rating”, pontua o documento.

Pensar SST no ESG

Mas, como o ESG entra no mundo da Saúde e Segurança do Trabalho? O conceito engloba todas essas letras, já que é necessário o respeito as condições laborais, os impactos que esse trabalho pode ocasionar ao meio ambiente e à sociedade. A Agenda de Desenvolvimento Sustentável da ONU, a Agenda 2030, delineou os objetivos estratégicos dos países membros para o avanço de uma série de indicadores, que englobam também o trabalho digno.

Durante a Conferência Pan-Americana de Saúde do Trabalhador e Ambiental – Rio 2018, Marco Akerman, professor titular do Departamento de Política, Gestão e Saúde da Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), apontou que, apesar do compromisso firmado, muitos países, inclusive o Brasil,fazem o contrário ao que foi estabelecido na ONU, infelizmente. “Cortes, contratos temporários e precarização, com o trabalho em domicílio – todos reforçados na Reforma Trabalhista. Hoje, não estamos utilizando evidências científicas para direcionar as políticas de saúde ao trabalhador. Globalmente, o que tem funcionado? A regulação e o cumprimento da lei em matéria de saúde e segurança no trabalho, por exemplo”, disse na conferência, publicada pela Associação Nacional da Medicina do Trabalho (Anamt).

E, mais uma vez, é possível mensurar essa triste estatística: só em 2022 foram registradas 612,9 mil notificações de acidentes aqui, e mortes provocadas chegou a 2,5 mil, de acordo com o Observatório de Segurança e Saúde no Trabalho, iniciativa do Ministério Público do Trabalho, Organização Internacional do Trabalho (OIT) e parceiros do governo federal.“Há uma correlação comprovada entre empresas que promovem um ambiente de trabalho seguro e se preocupam com a saúde dos seus trabalhadores e empresas com bom desempenho em seus negócios. Não há riqueza nos negócios sem saúde para o trabalhador”, frisou no evento Dra. Elia Enríquez Viveros, ex-presidente da Associação Latino-americana de Saúde Ocupacional (ALSO) e subdiretora do Instituto Nacional de Saúde do Trabalho do México.

Vale ressaltar que a OIT propõe uma agenda que coloque as pessoas no centro das relações de trabalho, sedimentadas em três pilares de ação que aumentem a equidade e a sustentabilidade, sendo o investimento nas capacidades das pessoas; nas instituições de trabalho; e, por fim, o trabalho decente e sustentável.“Não existe apenas um futuro do trabalho, são várias possibilidades”, apontou Tatiana Assali, gerente de Relações Institucionais do Conselho Empresarial Brasileiro para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (CEBDS) durante a Virada Sustentável, de 2020.

Na ocasião, Davide Fiedler, manager, social impact do World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), acrescentou que os trabalhadores ensejam não apenas bons salários, mas uma jornada com propósitos claros: “As pessoas querem se sentir basicamente seguros, o que inclui estar financeiramente estáveis, fisicamente e mentalmente bem, orgulhosos do que conquistaram na vida e no trabalho”, destacou em sua fala no evento.

Muito além do EPI

Estar em dia com o ESG não se resume a apenas um fornecimento de Equipamento de Proteção ou um local em boas condições, ou ainda seguir a legislação trabalhista. É preciso um aprofundamento das ações e aqui citamos exemplos de empresas de SST que procuram se alinhar a esses preceitos.

Thiago Loretti, gerente de Qualidade, Sustentabilidade e Processos da Ideal Work – Uniformes Profissionais e Vestimentas de Proteção comenta que foi desenvolvido um Sistema de Gestão de Sustentabilidade interna, além da elaboração do Manual de Sustentabilidade, que fica disponível no site da empresa. “Publicamos relatórios anuais com dados estratificados dos nossos programas, como controle de resíduos, além de ações sociais a fim de reportar a todas as partes interessadas. Passamos por auditorias e somos certificados pela Abvtex (Associação Brasileira do Varejo Têxtil), que é uma iniciativa nacional voltada ao respeito à responsabilidade social”, enumera.

Outra empresa alinhada com o ESG é a Lalan do Brasil que atua no segmento de luvas. “Para uma empresa do setor de Segurança e Saúde do Trabalho, valorizar as boas práticas socioambientais é de grande importância, uma vez que essa é uma área que lida diretamente com a saúde e bem-estar das pessoas e do ambiente em que estão inseridas. A adoção dessas medidas pode contribuir para a construção de um ambiente de trabalho saudável e seguro, além de demonstrar o compromisso da empresa com a sustentabilidade”, arremata a nota enviada pela empresa, situada no Paraná e subsidiária da Lalan Group, que há três gerações produz luvas no Sri Lanka.

Também do segmento de luvas, bem como de calçados, a Marluvas, MG, possui um portfólio de iniciativas, como o Projeto Educam, que há anos trabalha na educação e conscientização ambiental das novas gerações; a certificação “Eu Reciclo”, em que a empresa se compromete a cumprir a Lei 12.305/10 (Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos). “Vários dos nossos produtos têm em parte ou a integralidade reciclável. Temos uma cadeia integrada a preservar ao máximo o meio ambiente e garantir sustentabilidade no processo produtivo”, esclarece Danilo Oliveira, diretor de Marketing.

Sobre o futuro, hoje

Em 2022, as Revistas Meio Ambiente Industrial e CIPA coordenaram o “Simpósio Ambientes Seguros” e uma das pautas foi o ESG. O Prof. Dr. Fernando Codelo Nascimento, da Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), enfatizou em sua palestra a importância de todos os atores envolvidos estarem atentos a se atualizar continuamente no assunto. “As equipes devem se preparar, pois novos processos serão testados, novas ferramentas serão implementadas, os custos deverão ser reduzidos, os processos serão otimizados e projetos precisam ser iniciados dentro de novos contextos em constante transformação”, reforça.

A vontade é grande, os desafios idem e os meios são inúmeros. A transformação pode ser uma das rotas a serem percorridas. Mas um fato é concreto: os princípios ambientais, sociais e de governança não são meros indicadores, mas um caminho sem volta se desejamos um presente e futuros mais justos e sustentáveis para todo o planeta e, consequentemente, a nós mesmos.

Happy World Environment Day! The best way to celebrate is to think and educate yourself on the ways that climate, and radical rethinking of how to save our earth, involves thinking about how climate change is mainly about the people and the marginalized communities; their hunger, their homes, disease and disaster. Plant trees, recycle, but make sure to push your activism farther. Think about the larger changes that need to be made on a level much bigger than individual eco-friendly choices.

The theme for World Environment Day this year is “Only One Earth”, with focus on “living sustainably in harmony with nature”.
