“What would make it all work, Takahata wrote, was keeping the series as grounded as possible in the mundane things it was trying to elevate.
As he put it in that same 1971 document, realistic details were necessary to ‘make Pippi vivid and real in the child’s mind,’ and to bring her world to life. He offered a number of bullet points for the team to follow:
We cannot avoid representations of extremely trivial, everyday actions like taking off shoes and putting them on, deportment and housework. Rather, representing them is one of the basic themes of the work. Likewise, we should not only depict the intentions and outcomes of Pippi’s actions, but also clearly depict the process of the actions in such a way that they themselves evoke enjoyment and interest. Moreover, it’s not just about drawing; Pippi’s gestures must be characteristic of her.
This means a return to the main current of thought on animation, so to speak. It’s not animation if it remains a naturalistic portrayal of real, everyday life. While depicting the behavior of the quirky girl Pippi, it is necessary to heighten the expressions in a way that expands children’s imaginations and lets them feel the freedom of play and the joy of discovery.
Can people feel a sense of reality if the expressions are just symbols or rote patterns? Unless a lively Pippi is lively, beautiful things are beautiful to the audience, joyful things are joyful and tasty things are tasty and substantial, only the story will be able to hold the audience’s interest, especially in the case of children. […] For animation, this is a major handicap, so it is necessary to use various devices, such as appropriate close shots and panoramic views that have been carefully crafted.
According to Takahata, it was a series that wasn’t ultimately about story or conflict resolution — even though those elements were planned to appear. Pippi was about life.”

Let's conclude our Cutie Honey 50th anniversary trivia with the final episode: “A Poison Flower Scatters in Hell.”
Screenwriter: Masaki Tsuji
Art Director: Urata Mataharu
Animation Director: Satoshi Jingu
Director: Osamu Kasai
Tumblr media
With the exception of Junpei’s girlfriend Mami and the nameless Panther Claw subordinates, all of the (living) characters in the series appear for the final episode.
Tumblr media
The suspenseful drumming that plays before Eagle Panther attacks the truck was lifted from Go Misawa’s soundtrack for Devilman.
Tumblr media
Honey has always lovingly addressed her father as “papa”, but in this episode she refers to him as the more formal otousama or “father.” This was probably done to demonstrate to the audience how much she has grown from her battle with Panther Claw.
Tumblr media
In the original manga, Sister Jill’s headquarters was called maboroshi jyou or “Castle of Illusion.” The name was probably changed to avoid confusion with Cutter Claw’s “Castle of Illusion” from episode 10.
Jill’s headquarters in the manga looks like a traditional European style castle, while the anime version evokes more of a haunted house.
Tumblr media
The dreamlike landscape Honey falls into is modeled after the surrealist works of Salvador Dali, specifically one of his most famous works, The Persistence of Memory, which depicts melting pocket watches. The floating lips could possibly be based on Man Ray’s Observatory Time: The Lovers, a painting featuring a giant pair of lush red lips in the sky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second half of the episode features a few references to one of Toei Animation’s earlier films, The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon.
Released in 1963, the film tells the story of Susanoo, the youngest son of the gods who created the Earth, and his journey in finding his mother. The stylized film featured the talents of animation veterans such as Yasuo Otsuka, Yoichi Kotabe, Isao Takahata, and Kimio Yabuki.
References to The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon:
The human shaped fire that attacks Honey is animated almost exactly like the Fire God that Susanoo faces.
The phantom serpents are a dead-ringer for the eight-headed dragon. The only difference is the coloring. In the film their colors are similar to Maleficent's dragon form from Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. It’s worth mentioning in the original storyboard the illusions were meant to look like generic snakes.
After the Panther Chateau crumbles, the gloomy skies clear up and Honey finds herself in a flowerbed under a blue sky. This is similar to the end of the film, in which the defeated dragon turns into a field of flowers and the dark skies become bright and sunny.
Tumblr media
The bone-chilling organ music that plays during Honey and Jill’s confrontation is Fugue in D Major, BWV 580 by Johann Sebastian Bach. The rendition featured in this episode was performed by French organist Marie-Claire Alain.
Tumblr media
While the animation director for the finale is Satoshi Jingu of Anime Room, the key animation for the second half of the episode was handled primarily by Yoshinori Kanada. While he was relatively unknown at the time, he would go on to be a very influential figure in the animation world, working on titles such as Dino Mech Gaiking, Birth, Princess Mononoke and others.
Kanada’s style is particularly noticeable during the “Honey Special” sequence and Honey's reunion with the Hayami family. It’s very possible Kanada had worked on the other episodes animated by Anime Room (episodes 6, 13, 16, and 24) but he only received credit for this one.
Supposedly, the final episode was originally going to be handled by Shingo Araki and Hiroshi Shitara, but both men were too busy working on Majokko Megu-chan.
Tumblr media
Despite getting pretty good ratings, Cutie Honey was canceled due to concerns over salacious content. According to Go Nagai’s autobiographical manga, Gekiman! Cutie Honey Hen, nearly everyone involved was blindsided by the cancellation. Toshio Katsuta in particular was quite surprised, since Honey made better ratings than its predecessor, Microid S. Katsuta was actually quite confident Honey would last three or four seasons.
Because of the series' abrupt cancellation, Katsuta and Nagai both agreed to have Honey defeat Jill at the end of the series, while leaving Panther Zora’s fate being left to the interpretation of the fans.
In an interview printed in the 1981 Cutey Honey Roman Album, Go Nagai talks a little bit about what Honey and Zora were up to after the finale. He says Zora began harvesting animals from the Amazon and transforming them into androids, probably in preparation for a battle against Honey. He also says Honey is destined to only fight Panther Claw, so she'd probably ignore any unrelated criminal activity. I guess we can assume Honey got a little downtime after her victory against Sister Jill?
And that's all our trivia for Cutie Honey! I hope you enjoyed all the interesting tidbits I've collected over the years. Maybe someday I'll do this for the other series...

Many people, including myself, want the next 2D Mario game to actually look hand drawn like Wario Land Shake-It, but more closely resembling the artwork of Yoichi Kotabe.
I feel like if you really think about it, we got extremely close to that with the Paper Mario series... Super Paper Mario in particular could give you an idea of how it would actually look.
Obviously it's not quite the same since Paper Mario characters have those weird detached feet ( after the first game anyway ) and more cutsey designs compared to their canon counterparts... but I always felt like the first two Paper Mario games had an aesthetic that matched the artwork of the games pretty closely in terms of shading and colors, and design philosophies. Maybe tht's why I liked them so much.

Pippi Longstocking: The Strongest Girl in the World - Scene 2 (English)
B. Cooking Pancakes
Int. Kitchen - Pippi ties an apron tightly around her waist.
Pippi: "Now, let's make pancakes!"
She grabs a large bowl with both hands.
Pippi: "Now, let's make pancakes!"
Pippi takes three eggs in her hand.
Pippi: "Now, let's have breakfast!"
Pippi holds the bowl in one hand, and tosses the eggs in the air. She catches two in the bowl, but the third cracks atop her head.
Tumblr media
The shell falls off, leaving the yolk in her hair.
Tumblr media
Pippi points at it, and asks Tommy and Annika
Pippi: "You want this one too?"
The two silently shake their heads.
While speaking to them, Pippi rubs the yolk into her hair like shampoo. She then dries it off with a towel.
Pippi: "That's good, because egg yolk is actually really good for your hair. I was worried for a second."
She wipes the residue away from her eyes with the back of her arm.
Pippi: "Listen to my hair.. The more of a squeaking sound it makes, the faster it grows!"
[Tommy and Annika react to Mr. Nilsson. Pippi is on the floor; you can either have her walking with care, or knocking over the sugar bowl and spilling it.]
Pippi picks the egg shells out of the bowl.
Pippi: "Did you know that everyone in Brazil walks around with eggs in their hair?"
She takes out a bag of flour and a jug of milk from the cupboard.
Pippi: "That's why none of them are bald. Except one old man. Instead of wearing the egg in his hair, he'd eat it."
Pippi holds the flour and milk above the bowl and pours them in vigorously. There is a splash and puff.
Tumblr media
She then takes a bath brush off a wall hanger and starts beating the moist batter in the bowl.
Tumblr media
The dough splatters and sticks to the walls. stains the desk, and onto Tommy and Annika's face, but Pippi doesn't notice. Finally, Pippi removes the kettle from the stove and places the frying pan over the flame.
Pippi: "Then, he tried to use yolk, but it just slipped off of his bald head. It was terrible. Even the Police had to be called."
She then pours the batter into the frying pan. Pippi takes a plate and three cups of coffee from the cupboard and places them on the table. When she returns to the stove, she firmly grips the handle of the pan, and then flips the pancake into the air until it almost touches the ceiling,
Tumblr media
and then lands back on the other side.
Tumblr media
Pippi:  "Easy!"
Tommy is pleased.
Tommy: "Hahaha! Great!"
She then peels the pancake off the pan and tosses it, landing it neatly on the plate on the table. She then prepares to bake another one.
Pippi: "Hurry up and eat it while it's still hot! I've got plenty!"
Tommy picks the flapjack off the plate, tears it in half and hands the other half to Annika and begins applying jam to his half and bites into it.
Tommy: "Mmmm!"
Another pancake lands on the plate.
Pippi: "Do you like it?"
Tommy: (mouth full) "It's delicious! It's superb!"
Tumblr media
While eating, Annika gives a small piece to Mr. Nilsson.
Annika: "It tastes great!"
Pippi walks over to the table, sits down and begins pouring the coffee.
Pippi: "I'm glad you like it!"
She then stuffs half the pancake in her mouth.
Pippi: "It IS delicious!"
She then licks the area around her mouth.
