Disney’s Homophobia

The definition of homophobia is “dislike of or prejudice against gay people.” But what so many homophobes think it means is “an irrational fear of gay people” and this second definition, although usually very incorrect, actually describes Disney very well. 

They are terrified of adding any LGBT+ characters to there mainstream films in fear that they will lose the money of homophobic countries such as China, Russia, Nauru, Poland, and some Islamic countries, as well as many conservative populations in the united states, however prioritizing the money from these countries over inclusivity, representation, and equal rights is showing there true greedy hands. For China specifically, although I personally believe that there people and culture is good and it is just the government that is corrupt, they do have some severe humans rights issues, such as woman’s rights when it comes to reproductions, workers rights, gay marriage is not recognized and there are little to no protections, intersex people face great discrimination, and the Uyghurs are being forced into interment camps, and yet disney still cares about there money and other countries with similar human rights issues over the estimated 345,330,000 LGBT+ people world wide. 

The few LGBT+ characters to appear in there films are often blink or you miss it, have easily dubbed over lines, you can’t tell they are LGBT+ in the films and had to be confirmed off screen, or were simply just disappointing in general. I am linking the incredibly small list of LGBT characters in there films here. Some characters, like Valkyrie in the MCU have been confirmed LGBT, but the scenes that would have shown this have been cut from the film. 

Another way disney shows its irrational fear is in june, they have little to no recognition of pride moth its slickening, other companies that many not care about LGBT people the other 11 months of the year still bring out the rainbows in june, but disney does almost nothing. They could be making a but tone of money by selling rainbow versions of product in there parks but don’t, the “Disney gay days” is an unaffiliated outside planned annual event where the LGBT community plans to go to disney over a scheduled couple of days, but disney themselves have nothing to do with it. 

There is a possible light at the end of the tunnel however, Pixar is reportedly searching for a trans actress to play an upcoming role, however it is stated to be a side character like her LGBT predecessors before her, the show Loki is rumoured to have loki’s genderfluidity play into this show and there are rumours of lady loki being cast, and the upcoming eternals is two have two of its male main characters be a couple, but we have to wait and see how these three rumours play out before any credit is given. 

The reason I want better and more prominent LGBT+ disney characters is so that this generation and generation to come of kids both LGBT and not see that it is ok to be gay, trans, bi, asexual, or non-binary, so that LGBT youth learn that is ok how they feel and that there is nothing wrong with them, but that cis and straight kids also know that there are people different them them and that they are just as normal as they are and that we can all get along, because current disney films are teaching LGBT youth that they must be quite or in the background, that they can only be themselves if they blend in without being noticed, and that they do not get the prince or princess because all 440 disney films only have hetero leads so there is no happily ever after for LGBT youth. Disney spent decades queer coding there villain's, it would only be fair if after 18 years since its been decriminalized in the usa, and 6 years since gay marriage was legalized that we get more prominent LGBT characters in disney films.

I can’t believe I have to makes this post, but the writer of a character confirming this or that op is bisexual or biracial when that's not stated nor hinted in the bio and/or official material is incredibly lazy. It's the sort of "canon" nobody knows and is not reflected in the actual text.

Authorial intent is very nice, but if it’s not in the game, it’s the same kind of bullshit J. K. Rowling pulled with Dumbledore being gay. You want something about a character being canon? Put it in the game bio, or in one of the cinematics or comics they’ve been doing, otherwise it’s just someone’s opinion stated on Twitter, not actual canon. Because that information hasn’t been published officially.

I already had my gripes about releasing lore tied to cosmetics in the battlepass, cause not everyone will get or see those, and it’s information people will have a hard time finding (no, making a vague reference to a pendant on Caveira’s bio is still not good enough to let us know she is wlw, make an actual reference to her girlfriend in the text, not the fucking charm a lot of people won’t ever see, you cowards). However, this Pulse situation is a lot worse, because it’s not even a cosmetic or a post from the Siege account on Twitter, it’s a random comment made on an artist’s post, it has zero (0) official weight, sorry,

For the record, I think it would be great, but not done that way. And as for all of that being hinted already... I’m sorry but they fumbled and failed with it, imo. 

The biracial part I can see it, I remember commenting with a friend years ago (like, back in 2018) that both Valkyrie and Pulse were probably of Hispanic descent, due to their surnames. But the bi part is based on what, a random voiceline he can say when picking another player up from DBNO? That comes off as playful and teasing, not truly flirty. Especially when then they pulled Pulse/Hibana hard in the lore, even having them be married and with a daughter in Extraction. He’s never shown an interest in any guy, so I’m taking this “canon” with a grain of salt. Hell, I’ll take it with the whole bag of salt! The writer might have had the intention to make him bi, but if it’s not reflected in the actual lore, can you really say it’s canon? No, it’s not. “Twitter canon” is as useful as a carboard straw, it looks good and useful and woke at first glance, but it disintegrates as you use it and doesn’t really have a measurable impact in the environment.

First of all, as a bi girl, I have to start with my bi pals: Tony, Peter Parker, Valkyrie, Loki and Peter Quill. 4/5 have been confirmed in a certain way and it makes me so fucking happy. I am also going to put Clint here, I am sorry but I love his comic counterpart so much to not put him here and I have the biggest hope for the Hawkeye show to make him a lil' better. This may be (or not) a controversial opinion: Steve, Bucky, Sam, Bruce are all gay. I say the controversy thing beacuse especially the first three are seen as bi/pan but I just... can't? For me Steve and Bucky's romantic feelings for women in the MCU are due to comphet (don't get me started on Bruce and Nat) and Sam has never had a love interest but his relationship with Riley kind of fits. Also, Mobius AND PIETRO? and MY MAN RHODEY and his life time crush in Tony? I am fucking sure.

Also my asexual people! We have Yelena, Gamora, Nick and Heimdall who are ace/aro and they have always had beautiful relationships, just not romantic ones. What I do think, though, is that both facts have intruded in their relationship with sex: they are probably sex-repulsed and they just understand eachother so well.

worst female characters.

robyn hill  —  hands down one of the most annoying additions to the show. she is meant to be robin hood yet fails in the character’s motivations & ideals in every instance, her outfit / general design are clunky & poorly thought out, her personality has the exact desirability of hot garbage juice & she herself is just as appealing. the only slightly fun thing about robyn is her voice actress, the amazing christina vee & the potential she could’ve had that i really enjoy seeing be brought out in fanfics instead. in canon? robyn can go rot.

blake belladonna  —  our resident all lives matter queen who was meant to be a champion for all minorities watching the show, a bisexual icon & a shining example of an abuse survivor ... only to fail on all three. blake’s influence on the racism storyline only makes her come off as a privileged brat who would lecture those who are just trying to survive & blame them for the actions of a terrorist organization she was part of, & it was dropped as soon as her abusive ex was killed. her actions as an abuse survive are nonsensical at times. & blake wasn’t even confirmed to be bisexual representation until eight years into the show & she / her female love interest still aren’t canonically together while the cishet writers hide behind a slow burn excuse that was never applied to their m / f couples.

ruby rose  —  it sounds nonsensical to say this about our main character & i wouldn’t have put her on this before v7 & 8, but her favouritism by the narrative in those two volumes to the point the story would break it’s back to justify her drove me crazy. i was watching this character who we were meant to root for make mistake after mistake after mistake & hide behind her age & inexperience like a coward; like she hadn’t shoved her way into this war & rejected everyone around her who had experience & wanted to help because they didn’t want to do it her way. ruby behaved like a petulant child & i have no doubt that this isn’t going to change.

cinder fall  —  listen she was always a middling type of character for me, i didn’t hate her but i didn’t love her either. cinder was just cinder, a kind of flat antagonist who didn’t go anywhere; until they tried to make her go somewhere & in doing so had her repeat the same character arc like three times. her “backstory” that was just cinderella lazily copy & pasted eight years after people had been asking for it was the final nail in the coffin for me. they waited too long & got too lazy.

nora valkyrie  —  again, not really a character i thought i would’ve put on here after i really started to like her in volume 4 when she & ren finally began to get character development. they were kind of in the background which annoyed me but they weren’t being obnoxious so it was fine. i want to go back to v4 - 6 so bad lmao; nora in these two volumes has been horrendous. not only did she ignore all of ren’s boundaries when he was trying to ask for space, she thought the appropriate action to him asking for that space & struggling to vocalize it was to kiss him without consent. and then, she co opts his entire arc anyways for v8 & now it’s nora who wants the space & ren is being unreasonable, ren is forcing her boundaries, ren is in the wrong. fuck her stupid ass one liner backstory too. nora dropped so far on my shitlist because of her actions the last two volumes smh.

qrow branwen  —  again much like ruby & nora; i never thought i’d put qrow on here but his behaviour in these last volume especially has just dropped my fondness for him all the way to the grave lmao. he acts so much like ruby, a petulant child who was told no & lost his favourite toy, while acting like he didn’t specifically break that toy. he went from someone who was level headed, if an absolute asshole to a whiny manchild who spent the entire volume crying in a jail cell about how he was gonna kill his dead boyfriend’s boss because he doesn’t wanna admit he got him killed. & then he forgot about that in the last five minutes to cry about his potentially dead nieces, which only left me thinking, where was your concern about them the rest of this volume qrow? so yeah. on the shitty character list you go buddy.

ghira belladonna  —  i would change my mind & make this dumbass number one but he’s always annoyed me so i’m more settled with that emotion whereas qrow is a new development. but ghira is literally worse than annoying, he’s a useless character who takes up space & actively worsens the plot & the character  —  mainly blake  —  that he’s connected to. everything from his useless pacificism to the fact he’s a privileged faunus living in a mansion while his people are in huts to the fact that he’s now retaken the helm at the head of the white fang like?? what about his mentality has changed & how will that prevent another terroristic faction raising up in result of his negligence towards their people in favour of his own comfort driven pacifism?

hazel rainart  —  sir, your motivation is hokey & your hair is dumb & your braid ribs are giving me nightmares. originally i didn’t have as much of an issue with hazel infantilizing his grown twin sister because i thought we were at least going to get some rebuttal to this man using her death to metaphorically & then physically beat on ozpin. but no, he was validated & then had the gall to use her name in order to guilt trip ozpin in the “ no more gretchens ” line  —  like he hadn’t created dozens of gretchens in mistral with tyrian? sir you are a mass murderer  —  & then went out like an ass in one of the laziest redemption arcs i’ve ever seen. bravo, you suck.

adam taurus  —  he’s really not the highest on this list because i recognize that this is more because of milk & kornflake’s white comfort bleeding into their writing of a marginalized man & less of actually him as a character. adam is a bastard but he’s so much of a hate sink that i can’t take him seriously or hate him because of these traits; if mkek told me he killed puppies as a hobby, i wouldn’t hate adam for that, i’d hate them for continually making him edgier & edgier while ignoring their own racism around his writing.

Did you literally read any of my post...? At all?

For those of you who are curious:

#1. If you ACTUALLY read what I said you will notice that I am PRO POC and Female Characters.

Do I think that there needs to be some sort of Diversity Quota or, more specifically, MORE POCs or Female characters? Not necessarily.

I don't choose the types of content I enjoy based on meaningless, superficial, aspects of a character. A person being Black, White, Asian, or Female doesn't really mean much to me. If I like the premise and the characters are cool, in depth, and interesting then I'd probably give it a chance.

With that being said, I don't see any problem whatsoever if there ARE more POC or Female based movies/etc. However, if the advertising or main point of a story IS a person's skin color or gender that ISN'T due to the film/series being a historical based movie, then I will most likely not watch it. It is either a propoganda piece or a movie that I feel wasn't targetting me/or piquing my interest. Example: Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Mean Girls, Devil Wears Prada, Twilight, etc. (I mean... Twilight's Universe and take on Vampires was very unique and interesting to me but the films were... meh? They weren't bad.)

#2. Appropriation of established characters irks me. A lot. Clark Kent/Superman, Bruce Wayne/Batman, Mary Jane, Peter Parker/Spiderman, Hiemdall, Brunnhilde/Valkyrie, etc... Those are established characters and some are established entities of significant Culturue(s) in Europe... Just to name a few anyway. They were introduced as being White and Straight. Some were invented and worshipped, even now, as Dieities. I don't think any of those figures, as well as MAAAANY more, should be race, gender, or sexuality changed.... at all...

If you want a Black Spiderman you have Miles Morales. If you want an Asian Spiderwoman, you have Cindy Moon/Silk. If you want a Female Batman you have Katherine Kane/Batwoman. If you want a Black Flash you have Wallace West/Kid Flash. (His story is a bit complicated.)

You know what's even BETTER than being side versions of characters like Batman, Superman, Flash, Spiderman, etc.? Character's having their OWN identity.

Cyborg is not an side version of a White Character. Cyborg is his own hero. An ORIGINAL hero. Same thing as Static Shock, Black Lightning, Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, Blade, Misty Knight, Falcon, FUCKING SPAWN, Katana, Karma, Silver Samuri, Cassandra Cain, Doctor Light, BLADE, Brother Voodoo, etc.

All of those, too my knowledge, are all ORIGINAL characters. They weren't offshoots of White Characters, they weren't reinventions of White Characters, and they aren't token characters. They stand on their own. They don't NEED another White Hero to prop them up and they don't need to DEPEND on another White Hero to make them popular.

Miles is only popular becuase he's a Black Spiderman. (I mean... If he wasn't a Spiderman I honestly dunno if people would know him.) Batwoman is only popular because she's literally the Female version of Bruce Wayne.... (Again, if she wasn't called Batwoman I don't think many people would know her.)

Do you get my point?

Lastly, on this subject, my stance will always remain the same. If a character is introduced as Black, White, Asian, Straight, Gay, Female, Male, and so on, they STAY Black, White, Asian, Straight, Gay, Female, Male, etc. Race changing, Gender Bending, and Sexuality Shifting is not and should not be acceptable. Alternate Universes are one things, paradies are one thing, and all that are unique in those changes, but continuity is something that should be upheld...

You can't create an Indian Spiderman and call him Peter Parker... Peter Parker isn't Indian. Peter Parker isn't bi, or gay, or whatever else you add on to that. Peter is Straight. The same goes for other established characters. Cyborg isn't White. Blade isn't Gay. Mar-Vell isn't a woman. Do you see what I mean?

#3. Lastly, wanting to keep established White Characters as White is NOT racist!

Why?

Well.. Let ask you this:

Are Black People racist for wanting Black Characters to stay Black?

I'd say no. Of course not. They just want characters that were created to be like them and are part of their culture to STAY that way. It is NO different with White People and Peter Parker, Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Mary Jane, Valkyrie, Hiemdall, and so on. They are a part of White Culture... How and why is it racist if we want them to STAY that way when Black people AREN'T racist for wanting THEIR characters to stay that way for them?

Does that not seem hypocritical? That there's a double standard at play?

"But Whitewashing is opression. When a Black Person is playing a White Role it is to help represent them and good for the children to see that."

So you're literally saying that Culturual Appropriation and Race-Washing is okay...

You know what would be better? Creating INDEPENDENT and ORIGINAL POC Roles/Characters that are UNIQUE without IMPEDING on ESTABLISHED CHARACTERS!

You want a Black, Asian, or whatever love interest for Spiderman? INVENT one. You want a Black love interest for The Flash? INVENT one. You want an important POC character in a movie? INVENT one...

That way you are not appropriating ANYTHING and are creating original, independent, characters.

Oh... and one last thing...

just because thor and captain marvel shared like 0.5 seconds in the trailer and it was cute, ya’ll better not be shipping them. he has valkyrie okay like that’s his future wife, you heathens. and captain marvel is so gay/bi/pan (in my head - i hope they make it canon. give us an explicitly LGBTQIA hero, you cowards. i say explicitly because valkyrie is confirmed bi by tessa and stuff but marvel wouldnt let them make it explicit on screen). or if captain marvel is ace/aro, that’s cool too!

Have you seen that the Russos said there was a gay character in the MCU, that it was someone we already seen, and Kevin Feige would (probably soon) confirm it and reveal who it is? As much as I would like for it to be someone like Bucky, it'll probably not be. Maybe Shuri? Valkyrie is bi, so unless they're using gay like an umbrella term ("they, the gays" or something like that), I don't think it's her either. What do you think?

Yes. I did see it. Look, normally I’d be excited about an announcement like that, and obviously it’s fine if people feel that way. Personally, I just really don’t trust Marvel/Disney and I have no faith in their motives or in their actual commitment to doing any more than the bare minimum.

Even a lot of mainstream news outlets noticed and commented on the sidelining of Steve and Bucky’s relationship and the problematic reasoning behind it. And a lot of people have called out how pathetic an excuse for “representation” the random therapy group dude was. And of course, there’s been a lot of outrage in fandom circles too. So I think partly this announcement is Marvel trying to do damage control. 

They want to do the bare minimum they can get away with, but they did so little that they’re not getting away with it. So they’re trying to continue they’re baiting and minimal appeasement game. I doubt that they will want to take the “risk” of including an explicitly non-straight character in the movies. I could be wrong. I hope I am. But I bet they worry about the audiences it could “offend” and about getting banned in China. (Which I think is stupid because yes, they would lose some audiences, but there are also a lot of people who would actively choose to consume that content, or not be turned off by it. Also, they make a ton of money; they can afford to have one movie that doesn’t open in China. WTF. Stop being greedy cowards guys!)

Anyway. So because of that I think it’s more likely that the character will appear on the small screen, rather than the big screen. Now that Steve is safely in the past, they might have Bucky come out in the Winter Soldier & Falcon show and talk about his tragic, unrequited love for Steve. Or maybe Loki in his show? Or it’ll be some minor character and they’re just teasing and acting like it’ll be on of the heroes. 

I think it’ll be more hype than representation. Unfortunately.

my endgame thoughts (MAJOR SPOILERS)

Alright so I saw Endgame last night and I have had time to process my feelings about it so be ready for my rant, and again this includes MAJOR ENDGAME SPOILERS

I first want to say that I did really like the movie. After all of the spoilers got loose and people who hadn’t even seen the movie were just slandering it nonstop, I was really scared that I was gonna hate the entire thing. That definitely wasn’t the case. I hate a few of the decisions the Russo brothers made but overall I thought the movie was really good. It’s not going to be my favorite marvel movie, nor do I think it’s the best one, but I think it did have an overall good ending to the Infinity Saga, even if some of the character’s endings weren’t what I liked.

C A R O L. Fuck the Russo brothers for teasing her so much just for her to be in five minutes of it. I will say though, when she was in it, she was the goddess we knew from her own movie and she KICKED ASS. I’m looking forward to seeing her lead the rest of the next chapter of the MCU. And I am really shocked that we actually got Carol in her iconic pixie cut, definitely didn’t think the MCU was gonna give that to us.

I am LIVID at the Russo brothers for saying “oh yeah we have a gay character in the film whoohoo!” AND IT WAS FUCKING JOE RUSSO’S STUPID FACE TALKING ABOUT GOING ON A DATE WITH A MAN. OOH I’m mad, because number one that is QUEERBAITING because we thought it meant Carol but no the Russos don’t want us to have nice things.

Thor. My god that was awful. I knew about his awful hair but I did not know about the beer belly and his weight gain. That pisses me off so goddamn much. It wasn’t necessary, it really fucking wasn’t. There are many other ways they could have depicted his depression without that. As a plus size person, I was disgusted because everyone in the theater was dying of laughter just at the sight of Thor almost anytime he came on screen. He was there just to be a lazy source of humor because people love fat jokes. Obviously, there really isn’t plus size representation in the MCU and I am perfectly fine with that because I mean these are superheroes and aliens and literal gods, it makes sense that they aren’t, and sure there was a fat joke every once in a while but even I find the occasional one funny. When it is pretty much the biggest source of comedy for the movie minus Scott, that crosses a line. It really felt like the only reason Thor was there was to supply constant fat jokes, and honestly that’s just lazy writing on the Russo brother’s parts not that I expected much more let’s be honest

Nat’s death … I mean if you’ve followed me for a while I don’t think it’s a secret that I don’t like Scar Jo and I don’t like MCU Nat because the writers have screwed her over time and time again and then on top of that, Scar Jo just doesn’t … do anything ?? Like I do not see the appeal to her acting if that’s what you want to call it. Hell, I could probably do a better Nat. Honestly I’m pretty happy that they killed her off because that means Nat won’t have to be portrayed poorly anymore and I won’t have to see Scar Jo’s face for the rest of the movies, with the exception of maybe the Black Widow movie if that happens but it’ll probably be a prequel so I am all good with that. I am sad that any version of Natasha dies but I just don’t want to see one of my favorite characters get treated so badly anymore.

Nebula. I was really happy with how big of a part she played in this film, she has always been a favorite of mine and her development has just been amazing. Karen Gillan really did so well in this film and I’m happy she was given the chance to show how important of a character she is.

Where was Okoye ??? Why put her on the poster, why have Danai on this huge press tour, why do any of that if I saw her A TOTAL OF TWO MINUTES?!?! They just baited us the whole time ugh....

I was not a fan of Professor Hulk. I don’t know it was but I just ... it just felt like something was off about him the whole time, and I really hope that it’s the end for Hulk just because I don’t know if I could take that again.

Scott is a gem. Scott is perfect, no one hurt him, no one change him, he stays forever. 

The time travel plot wasn’t bad, I thought, it’s basically what we expected even without the spoilers. The little changes when they went back in time to get the stones were great, especially Loki. Like the Tesseract just appeared next to him and he said YEET and left.

The final battle was EPIC especially the moment when all the portals open and everyone appears oh my god that was magical, though I wish we got to see more reunions like Steve should have RAN to hug Bucky :( but Sam saying “on your left” to let him know they fixed the snap was incredible. And the Steve fucking WIELDING MJOLNIR !!! AMAZING. And that scene when all of the super ladies were helping Carol get the gauntlet to the van I mean GODDAMN that was breathtaking. Literally everyone in the theater was cheering and shouting during it which made it so much better too. And Pepper as Rescue, wow I’m so happy I was given that.

I was really happy that we got to see Gamora again, I mean seeing her kick Chris Pratt in the balls was one of the highlights of the movie for me. I hope that maybe they’ll find a way to bring her back but I’m a little hesitant because then that might mean Scar Jo would come back

Tony. As much as his death hurt me and as much as I love him and wish he didn’t die, I really do think that his death was the right way for him to go. We all know Tony, he could pull himself away for a while but he always went back to the fight, and he died to protect the family he found and that is the most Iron Man thing he could’ve done. And the fact that his last words were “I am Iron Man” ?? I mean come on that is how this whole thing started and we’re gonna end with that ?! Oof that was the most beautifully heartbreaking part of the movie. I love you x3000 Tony.

And now we get to the part that I’m most angry about … Steve Rogers. One of the best characters of the MCU (in my opinion) and the Russo brothers gave him That. I was seething when I saw it play out on screen, even though I had known it would happen from spoilers. There is no way, absolutely NO WAY Steve would have gone back and just lived a mundane life while KNOWING that Bucky was out there being brainwashed and tortured and he knew HYDRA was invading S.H.I.E.L.D the whole time, the place that Peggy, the person he went back for, built up and dedicated so much of herself to … and him leaving Bucky after Bucky had just gotten back to him? Nope, that is not the Steve Rogers that we have grown to love and I would rather he had died protecting those he loved than THAT. Yes, I think he deserves to be happy and Peggy is one of many sources of happiness for him, but he has so many more in the timeline he left behind that I just don’t see him risking all of that for Peggy. I really think this was the easiest way for Marvel to establish that Steve is heterosexual and that there is Nothing There with Bucky because they are cowards. And another thing, it just completely goes against literally everything Agent Carter was about. I love Peggy, and I always loved her with Steve, but she moved on and he needed too as well WITH BUCKY OR SAM OR TONY OR REALLY ANYONE ELSE. Agent Carter was basically all about Peggy proving herself to be more than just Captain America’s girlfriend, and Steve going back to disrupt all of that is just so wrong on so many levels. The only good thing that came out of this ending for Steve was that he gave Sam the shield, and I hope in the Falcon and Winter Soldier show we get to see Sam fulfill that role. I love Bucky (if you couldn’t tell from my URL) and I loved him as Cap in the comics and I would love to see him as Cap in the MCU, but I really think Sam should take the mantle from Steve, at least for right now just because Bucky is really still healing from his memories of HYDRA and everything that happened with Civil War, and my baby just needs to rest at least a little bit

I do like that Thor is partnering with the Guardians, I really think they will be a great new family for him. And we were fed well when he crowned Valkyrie the king of Asgard, which is what she deserves. It does worry me that maybe we won’t see her again unless there is another movie with Thor in it, but it’s not really confirmed if Hemsworth is done with the franchise, so if this was it for her, I’m glad she got that ending.

So I’m still pretty heated about Steve and Thor and the fucking Joe Russo queerbaiting cameo, but overall it was a really good movie, and I think a good ending for most of the characters. It was a crazy ride but I am very much looking forward to Far From Home and everything that is to come, I think we have a great lineup of superheroes to fulfill the next phase of the MCU. And also, the America’s ass line was the best thing that happened in the movie.

kind of a follow up to my post about Marvel’s erasure of queer characters from the comics, but it’s still bothering me cause honestly it’s worse than having no queer characters at all. 

Like I’m really into Stargate, which due to various stupid reasons has absolutely no queer rep whatsoever, regardless of the fact that there is ample opportunity, chemistry and room within the story they’re telling. But this is something I’ve more or less come to expect within certain frames of media, especially media from the 90s. And I would almost prefer that absence to what Marvel has done which is take canon queer characters and make them...less, or not even at all. 

I don’t watch Runaways, for a couple of reasons but one of which is just time. But I do know that a lot of people really like Karolina and Nico as the Lesbian Rep for small screen Marvel and like...I don’t want to be picky because we don’t exactly have a lot to choose from but it’s just....Okay so Karolina Dean in the comics is the most beautiful rainbow lesbian you could ever imagine. Like she literally turns into a rainbow, it’s very on the nose but I love her. And in the first comic she makes a move on Nico Minoru, this gothic asian badass witch chick, who politely turns her down because she’s not into girls like that. Lame right? Wrong, it is a very important story point to show how Karolina deals with that and how their friendship grows. It also launches one of my all time favorite comic romances Ever!

Xavin is a genderqueer alien prince who shows up and is evidently betrothed to Karolina, and both of their peoples lives depend on this alliance. Bit of a problem for our little rainbow lesbian right? but lo and behold Xavin turns into a girl, and what started as duty bound engagement turns into this really sweet romance that while it doesn’t ultimately pan out is really formative for Karolina’s character, who later ends up dating another badass lesbian queen Julie Power and they go on gay adventures together. 

Nico’s story is separate and no less fleshed out, but her and Karolina’s friendship is beautiful. So while I’m sure the actresses do an amazing job, and yeah it’s nice to see some lesbians on screen, I can’t help but feel cheated out of this genderqueer person of color who was supposed to sweep Karolina off her feet. 

And it really speak to what Marvel has done with a lot of their characters. They took the one they knew was going to sell to their target audience of twelve year old boys, basically ignoring their female audience, and Iron Man took off. Of course it did, don’t get me wrong I love Tony, but he’s a white, rich, brilliant, charming male protagonist. There was no risk there. 

And they took away anything that might have lessened that easy sell; the fact that Tony’s bisexual, his past male lovers, they decided not to include Namor at all. And in spite of all their success they continue to cut anything that might be too ‘risky’, to the point of including almost no female superheroes, only adding Captain Marvel at like the last possible minute. 

It’s like asking for cake and having it fed to you via crumbs. Like no I want all of it, I want Moondragon, I want Natasha being the bisexual badass she is, I want Mantis and Nebula to makeout on screen, I want the wedding of Billy Kaplan and Teddy Altman, I want to see Namor flirt with everything that moves and Tony flirts right back. I want to see Loki turn into a woman, and then back, and then be neither or both. I want Sigyn and Angrboda, I want Carol to seduce the fuck out of Valkyrie and Rhodey, I want my goddamn cake. I want it with everything on it. I, and all of the rest of us, deserve our female heroes and our gay heroes and our genderqueer galactic badasses. Tell the story of Brunnhilde and Frejya, talk about Trish and Marlo, and Heather and Phylla. Talk about Jean-Paul and Kyle. Give. Deadpool. A. Boyfriend.
