That bondage(?) Deep Night scene was something 👀
Urh, um. I have a lot to say about... whatever this was, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This probably does not deserve a whole essay-long post, but here it is anyway.
I can't be the only one that thought this was laughably ridiculous. I don't know what it was trying to be... sexy? Mysterious? Risqué? The different girl? But it failed.
There was just too much and too little at the same time if that even makes sense. These actors are all amazing, for sure, so I don't fault them at all. Truly, the entire time I was just hoping they were paid enough for this, lol.
I mean, okay, alright, I'm not particularly versed in the sexy things of the night, lmao (what is censored on Tumblr these days?), but this scene was just plain comedy to me. I literally choked.
Tumblr media
It just felt odd and forced. And it was weird because their other ~sexy~ scenes are, to me, really well done -- intense, chemistry-filled, angst, etc., etc. -- but this just felt like a random insert that added no value to anything, lol. With BLs, maybe especially Thai ones I feel, you go in mostly not knowing how far they will go with their couples, and you usually don't know until it--whatever it is--happens. And this, let me tell you, I was not ready for, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite being apprehensive that the host club meets acrobatics storyline would be another too out-of-pocket Thai BL concept for me, I actually started to really enjoy it, until this scene made me fear the future of this series.
The chemistry between Wela and Khem is just so, so good. I love it. And circa episode 2, their steamy shower scene really had the angst, yearning, and build-up to make it the level of sexy that the random bondage bed scene failed to have.
Wela was fine in the bondage scene, but Khem was giving too much for what was actually going on, which to me looked like hot yoga and a tooth exam. 😂
Seriously, it was like he had a piece of spinach stuck in his mouth and was just constantly trying to get it out. And meanwhile my homeboy Wela, bless his heart, was trying to do some sort of oral exam on Khem. Khem's good to go until his next cleaning in 6 months, LMAO.
Tumblr media
And the issue for me, too, is that there was no build-up or hints or whatever that these two would be into bondage, BDSM, or however you'd/they'd label it. BDSM is all good and well, but here it felt so random. It'd made more sense and probably have had more impact if they put in little hints here and there that one or both of them were into some sort of bondage situation.
It'd have been even better if it were Wela, because of his dynamic with Khem. Khem comes off as this confident, carefree rich kid, while Wela has a softer, sweeter personality. He's a good student who just wants to do well for his family. If he were the one to suddenly spring on or suggest BDSM to Khem, now that would have been interesting.
I mean, all and all, props to the actors for taking this sort of scene seriously and trying their best.
I'ma keeps watching anyways, because there are a lot of fun and interesting things to like about this show. I also definitely want to see what happens to Seiji, aka sheer-shirt-boy, and Khem's innocent uni friend.

Moxy Show update: they found a promotional VHS tape that went with the cartoon network computer game Toonjam that has high quality Moxy Show clips in it, so a little bit less of the show is missing
Oh wow, that’s interesting Anon. So long as there are fans, I don’t think a show ever dies!

"เพียงนาวา Lover Merman" - A Rant on BLs Whose Entire Identity is Being a BL~
Okay, let me preface this by saying this is the first commentary(?) on a show that I have ever made on here, so be gentle with me, please. I usually only say one or two things in the tags, lol, but I really enjoy reading posts like this by @lurkingshan and... well, okay, I know there are many more of you out there that I follow, but I can't think of anyone specifically rn, lol. But you know, the users that make really interesting and reflective posts on shows, characters, etc. I admire the effort and shared appreciation toward the BL/drama world, so I wanted to give it a try. Another preface is that I am basing all of this on only having seen the official pilot for "Lover Merman" and nothing else. I'm an average BL and K/C/T/J-drama watcher without any special knowledge of the industry or how things work.
Okay, here goes.
Tumblr media
So there is a comment on the pilot that says something like it’s so nice to see BLs coming out with unique and different plots. And my reaction was like, but is it really different or unique? Lol.
The mermaid storyline might be new to the BL genre, but it is not new to most viewers (maybe it is different in Thailand, but still, the issues remain). And they did nothing, from what I can see in the pilot, to make it different or nuanced in its own right. If we took away the mermaid concept, the BL storyline looks the same and the BL character personalities look the same.
There could have been so many ways to write this sort of story, so many interesting ways to have the characters meet or become interested in each other, but instead, homeboy visits an oceanside bar, sees the main lead (Nava, our merman), and immediately hits on him asking for a drink that means he is in love. Come on, now. On what seems to be the same day, he then chases Nava down, hops on the back of Nava's bike, holds his waist, and continues to hit on him. And Nava turns down his flirting and calls him out (yes to this!!), saying it’s not going to work on him. This would be a perfect opportunity to do something new, but he just continues with the advances, and not 10 seconds later, Nava smiles. These sorts of unrealistic scenes are fun and all, but after seeing it done a million times in other BLs, it feels overused and boring. BLs can be so much more, so why only do the same things and use the same BL character types? Nava seems interesting though, as does his other mermaid friend, so maybe there's something there. Please, give us more characters like Namnuea in "Wedding Plan" (which I have my own comments on, but another day), or even Uea in "The Middleman's Love" (though you can pass on the drama itself and be just fine). Namnuea, for instance, is a unique BL lead to me because he shows a more feminine side, he's got sass and quirks, and he doesn't just take what people give him.
And for the time the trailer does not put into depth and nuance (sorry, I say that word a lot here); it is used for steamy bedroom scenes with interesting positions and sexy background music. Another thing that's not really new to BLs, especially Thai BLs, lol. The steamy scenes can be nice, sure, but not when it's the only thing the show is about. Hoping that's not the case here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The story is that the two main leads like each other (hopefully for a reason, but we'll see), but of course, something stands in their way that they must overcome. And from the pilot, it doesn't even seem like it is the mermaid aspect, but rather a second male lead is the conflict of the romance, lol. I hope the second male lead being a merman as well means the choice Nava has to make is going to address some identity topics, and not be just two hot dudes fighting over another hot dude.
The story made me think of "The Rules of Love," a 2019 C-drama that actually takes the mermaid storyline and makes it unique. Basically, the story follows this tomboy girl mermaid, and she doesn't seem to care to be defined as a boy or girl. In this mermaid world, when a merperson falls in love, their gender is decided based on that. And let's just ignore the obvious issues with this concept (that there are universal or correct formulas for gender pairings) and just assume, despite the couple being straight, that a merperson, in this case, could become a boy after falling in love with another boy or the girl version of that. So regardless all of that, this created a unique look at gender fluidity and falling in love with a person, not how they identify or how they are identified. It wasn't just a human and mermaid falling in love and overcoming being different; there was more to it. And this could have very well been a BL or GL if not a Chinese drama. Alas, if "Lover Merman" was going to do a mermaid storyline, they could have been creative with it like this.
And what’s the big deal anyways? It’s explained that mermaids can pretty much stay on land so long as they go back to the water sometimes. So, what are the real stakes here, what will be overcome, and what’s the bigger message? The dude seems so in love with Nava that I don't think finding out this beautiful man is even more beautiful as a merman is going to be a negative.
If we’re talking about unique BL storylines, look at Japan's "Cherry Magic!" and "Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice but to Kiss!," Thailand's "Last Twilight," or even the lighthearted Korean BL "Love Tractor." What these all do is they are a BL along with having a storyline/plot beyond the BL. "The Eighth Sense" is another notable mention that is most innovative when it comes to the filming and storytelling style compared to other Korean BLs that exist so far. Or look at BLs coming out that are self-aware and actually talk about the BL genre, both in lighthearted ways like "The Man Who Defies the World of BL" as well as in more reflective ways like "Lovely Writer." BLs have come so far that when BLs come out that feel factory-made and devoid of a real story, it's like, why? Based on the pilot and the overly serious music in it, this series is trying to present a serious storyline. But it doesn't really feel that way to me. It feels like a basic BL storyline wearing a pretty costume, but underneath, it’s still the same old thing. It doesn't even need to be the mermaid aspect that is different, just give us one unique thing whether it's the characters, setting/time, etc.
There’s definitely something intriguing and beautiful about the idea of a human and mermaid falling in love (many of us grew up on this concept in The Little Mermaid). But this story, as per its trailer, does not do this sort of story justice in the present time.
Now I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with taking a traditionally straight story or narrative and showing that it can also be non-straight. I think that can actually be really good for people to see. Again, this is all off of the pilot alone, and it could very well turn out to have more depth and meaning beyond what they've shown so far. I hope that it does because a mermaid premise could be interesting. I honestly don't really know anything about the show or cast, but I just wanted to get my thoughts across.
I've been a silent user on here for a very long time, so I don't really have any mutuals, but I want some! If you also watch BLs or are interested in these sorts of things, I'd love to know your thoughts on this or maybe any Tumblr blogs you like reading regarding these topics. You can also tell me what you are current watching and maybe I'll check it out. :)

Random Cartoon Network anon what do you think about The Moxy Show ? I think it's nuts a majority of Cartoon Network's first show is lost media 📺
Well, hi, Random Cartoon Network anon. I think you're the first I've ever had on here. Recently, I've been posting about cartoons, I think, but I actually usually post about Asian dramas, lol. But, hey, I enjoy watching a lot of different things.
Until I looked it up, I'd never actually seen or heard of The Moxy Show. Did you grow up watching it?
In terms of OG Cartoon Network shows, I grew up on shows that came out a couple years later, like The Powerpuff Girls, Jonny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Ed, Edd n Eddy. I was a baby in the late 90s, so I sort of grew up watching these shows when they were already over.
Now I kind of want to rewatch the old cartoons I grew up on. Even when it comes to Disney Channel shows and Nickelodeon, they just don't make them like they used to.
