PTSD Radio is told in a series of randomly placed short stories. What PTSD Radio does best is set off your ‘fight or flight’ instinct; the ‘threat’ isn’t obvious (all we know is it has something to do with hair, it reminded me of those horror movie series I watched growing up, The Grudge) and because of this even after I closed the manga my brain continued to search for a potential threat, making it hard to sleep that night. The artwork is brilliantly creepy, by the way. Massaki’s work is kinda simplistic, lacking a plot, and just simply, ‘empty’. Ironically it is those three things that make this series, PTSD Radio, absolutely terrifying to me. This is the first horror manga to make me hesitate when turning my lights off to go to bed, putting down my window blinds the second the sun began to set in fear that I’d see a scary figure staring back at me from the darkness, not wanting to stumble towards the bathroom at 3am in the dark because one of the monsters from this manga might be waiting for me. I recommend this series to people whose brains work in the way mine does in regard to horror; feeling uncertainty and creepiness in things that sit a little too close to normality (like a figure in the distance or a tiny noise in a quiet house). I can understand that if you’re someone that wants horror with a clear plot and characters who have development, this may not be for you, but if you only need a certain trigger to be so scared you can’t sleep? *TWs: >> extreme body horror, body modification, gore, cann*ibalism, hardcore violence, body parts and blood flying everywhere (literally) There is a sub-genre of manga where the story largely takes a back seat, and very quickly devolves into a semi-nonsensical string of events that depict horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible things happening to people for no reason. Usually in this kind of manga guts and body parts start to fly and dismemberment is common. You know, those manga, right? This is one of those manga. It's a trainwreck that's so bad I can't stop reading. It's like the author wants to change the genre every few chapters. One minute it's a slasher, the next it's revived zombie cannibals, then it's a war on the island, now all the characters are stuck in a hole eating each other, then it's a tsundere romance manga. it feels as if the author started throwing weird plot ideas in, and quickly stops being believable, turning into some sort of grotesque nonsense where everybody chops everybody else into pieces Long story short, my worst read by faaar --------- *Manga : Kichikujima (freak island) (on going, up until chapter 126) *MAL rating : 5.65/10 *my rating : Story (1/10) is trashy, art (4/10) starts out decent but gets worse. *TWs: >> this manga is pretty creative in its depiction of extreme gore and horrific violence, so expect to see the most nauseating gore/body horror you can imagine. >>many of the characters possess varying degrees of sadism/masochism and the implications that are brought up are quite disturbing all in all. The story follows a fearsome killer known by his codename (Ichi) and the orders he undertakes from his so-called uncle. The main story may lack some depth but it tries to add some by revealing the past bullying experiences of Ichi, which led to his current state of mind. Although it doesn’t seem to do a good job at relating it to the present, it manages to tie it in with Ichi’s current target. In the end the story does have a repetitive cycle but there are plenty of exciting twists to spice things up. Ichi the Killer proved to be one of the most disturbing and gruesome manga ever created, with a twisted story that didn’t make much sense until you get deep into the story. This manga really only served the purpose as a vaccination for extremely, bloody, violent manga because after reading this you’ll never feel a thing when you see like a guy being tortured or decapitated in any other manga. So in the end, this manga is a decent read, but you’ll have to be a violence lover to enjoy this. TW : this manga is very explicit. I highly advise that if you have not had any experience or prior knowledge of the ero-guro (erotic grotesque) and yaoi genres to NOT READ THIS MANGA. I very much liked reading this short horror story of a retelling of the creating of Frankenstein. Litchi Hikari Club does everything it should do for a series of the ero-guro and yaoi (even tho it takes just some pages) genres, and more. It's shocking, twisted, and leaves such an impact (the final chapter comes to mind instantly) it's near unforgettable. As I've said before though, if you're not interested in a series built on violence and lewdicity, you may want to check out something else. The gore is drawn equally as well. It's intense, enough to make any fan of horror and the grotesque look away (but then they'll have to look back again, it's so painstakingly drawn to detail.) If you need a good scare, a devious plot, or just want to look at some great artwork, Litchi Hikari Club is the manga to pick up. Alice awakens in a cursed manor where any of her wishes can come true, but she tasks herself with escaping back to civilization. We follow her from room to room, bearing witness to several humans that have given into their desires, descending into madness and ultimately losing what humanity they once had. These people embody escapism, and demonstrate the dangers of such a thing in a majorly exaggerated way. In the midst of this, Alice is not safe from harm either; her body is being progressively decayed by the poison of desire to escape from a system in which she is doomed to fail in. The build-up leading to her escape is executed well, and what comes after makes for a well-written twist. The artwork here is astounding, with lots of diversity ranging from beautiful atmospheric panels to vividly detailed, and quite frankly, horrifying panels.
