Y/N Y/L/N was sitting outside in the quad with her best friend and roommate, Nat, between classes when her phone rang. She dug it out of her bag and answered. Her brother’s school was calling to tell her that Asher was sick. Y/N cursed, she knew the stomach bug was going around and it was going to be a crappy next few days. She asked Nat to send her the notes for the lectures before rushing to her car. In the parking lot, she was digging around trying to find her keys in her purse. She heard her name called and saw Clint Barton and his friends standing around by their cars. He jogged up to her and she could see over his shoulder that they were all watching them. “Where you going?”
Y/N was confused why Clint was talking to her. She rolled her eyes internally at the invasive question. The football team was notorious at their college and she didn’t have time to be one of their flavors of the month. “Places.”
He leaned against the car door, “Are purposefully secretive, or does it come naturally?”
“Oh, I’m all natural, Barton,” Y/N jerked on the door handle, knocking him off balance. “Now I have to go. My brother is sick and I have to pick him up.”
“But it’s the middle of the day. Don’t you have class?”
She took a deep breath to keep herself calm. It wasn’t Clint’s fault she felt this way, she was just stressed about Asher, “Look I’m sorry. I wish I had the time to make idle conversation while you decide whether I’m worth sleeping with. But, I don’t. I have a sick kid to get to.” Y/N threw her stuff in the car and peeled out of the school.
Clint walked back over to his friends who had watched the exchange take place. “She looks like your number one fan,” Sam said, laughing at him.
“Oh fuck off. She’s just busy.”
“Looked like she couldn’t wait to get away from you.
—————————————————————————-
In the three days since she’d got the call, Y/N’s life had been sniffles, cuddles, and soup. Just as she had predicted, a sickly five-year-old was exhausting for any parent, but for a 20-year-old it was beyond overwhelming. Y/N had just planted him in front of the TV when she heard a knock at the door. She swung it open and was greeted by a familiar face, “Mrs. Barnes! What are you doing here?”
“I’ve told you before, call me Winnie!” She held up a dish, “Anyway, I heard about Asher and thought I’d bring dinner by. This stomach bug has been going around and Rebecca had it last week.”
“Oh, that’s so nice of you. It’s been a hectic three days.”
“Have you called your father, dear?”
Y/N nodded, “I left a message with his assistant, but by the time he got back here they’d be on the mend. I’m almost certain I’ll send them back to school tomorrow.”
“Well, I have to get going anyway and pick up Becca. I’ll see you at the Halloween parade next week?” Y/N nodded and closed the door.
Winnie Barnes was her savior. A single mother who had taken pity on Y/N over a year ago. Three years ago, after another nanny had quit, Y/N had started taking care of her two younger siblings. Her father was rarely home and the women he had impregnated had no interest in raising children. This combination led to a 17-year-old raising a three-year-old all on her own. Last year, Winnie had befriended Y/N and since then she tried her best to offer support. Y/N refused to talk about her father’s absence, but they both knew her father was rarely home. Thankfully, Winnie’s magic had worked again and the next day, both kids were feeling much better and life could return to normal.
Y/N was sitting outside of a coffee shop on campus, the autumn sun warming her. She was transcribing all of the notes she had missed last week when the chair opposite her became occupied by Clint Barton. He smiled at her, “There’s a party tonight. You should come.”
Y/N barely spared him a glance, keeping her eyes on the paper, “Thanks, but I can’t. I have plans.”
“Plans? What kind of plans?”
She weighed her options and decided that there was only one way to get him to leave her alone, “A date.”
“You have a date?”
Y/N sighed and shut her notebook. “Don’t sound so surprised, Barton, or I’ll think I should be insulted.”
“I didn’t mean it that way. You just don’t seem like the type to casually date is all.” Y/N sighed and closed her notebook. She crossed her arms and just stared at him. “Is there something on my face?”
“No, I’m just trying to figure out what it is about you. You’re so annoying and yet, I don’t have the urge to throw my coffee in your lap.”
“Let’s call that my charm,” the boyish grin that he gave her made her laugh. “Now, why did you reject me last week? I’m obviously not repulsive to you.”
“Reject you? What was there to reject? I don’t remember anything being asked.”
Clint glared playfully at her, “Don’t play stupid, it doesn’t work for you. You know what I was trying to do.”
“Look, Clint, you’re right. I did know what you were trying to do. You’re cute, but I have a younger brother and I’m really the only person around.”
“You think I’m cute?”
Y/N laughed, “Of course, that’s what you get out of it.”
Clint smiled at her again, “I hear you, though. I’ll back off, but just know I’m not giving up.” He pushed his chair back and started to walk away, but turned back around, “By the way, you didn’t actually say no.”
———————————————————-
Clint was in the kitchen with Bucky talking about the party that night. Becca, Bucky’s younger sister, came running into the room, “You can’t go to a party! My Halloween Parade is tonight! You guys promised you would come!”
He crouched down, “How about we go to your show and then the party after. Deal?” He held out his pinky. Becca surveyed him for a second and then held out her finger in agreement. That night, when they got to the school, Winnie was immediately pulled in by friends. Parents chatted away, occasionally asking him and Bucky how their second year of college was going and how working at Stark Industries was. He noticed the woman next to him kept looking around and leaned over, “What are you looking for Mama Win?”
“This lovely girl, Y/N.” Clint perked up at the name, “She’s around your age and usually is at these things. I saw her younger brother, but not her. Oh wait, there she is!” Winnie waved over to the teenager.
Y/N smiled and greeted her, “Sorry, I’m late. The joys of costume emergencies and five-year-olds. It’s a lethal combination.”
Winnie waved away her apologies, “Is your father here?” Y/N was quick to make excuses for her father. She had been doing it for years. The older woman nodded sympathetically, “Oh, well that’s too bad.”
“Yes, he was very disappointed to miss this.” Clint could tell that she was hiding something, but before anything also could be said, they were interrupted by a young boy running up.
“Y/N! Y/N! Carter spilled juice on my shirt”
His classmate plastered a smile on her face, even though Winnie and Clint could that she was overwhelmed by the chaos, “It’ll be okay. I’ve got a change of clothes for you in my car.”
“Why don’t I take him to the bathroom and get him cleaned up while you run and grab the clothes,” Winnie offered.
Y/N looked relieved, “That would be great. Thank you,” she quickly started to leave the gym.
Clint jogged after her, “I thought you said you had a date tonight.”
“I do. At Pizza Charlie’s. It’s a tradition to take the kids after school events. Plus with trick-or-treating tomorrow, I just don’t have time for frat parties or hangovers.” They stopped in front of the car and Clint looked into the trunk. He saw that her car was made for kids. She had changes of clothes, toys, and snacks.
“This is your car?”
“Yeah,” Y/N was confused, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, it just looks like Winnie’s. You weren’t kidding when you told me that stuff earlier.”
“My dad’s pretty busy. So I spend a lot of time with my brother. You learn to be prepared. On another note, what are you doing at a kindergarten spring concert?”
Clint rubbed his neck and blushed, “Winnie’s like a mom to me, and Becca is like a little sister. A very persuasive sister who has made it clear to Bucky and me that we are needed at every school event.”
Y/N laughed, “Oh yes, I am very familiar with the persuasiveness of five-year-olds. There is a reason we keep going to Pizza Charlie’s and it is not because I think the food is good.” The duo headed back inside and Y/N split off to the bathroom, while Clint went back to Bucky.
“Dude, I can not wait to get out of here. People are sending videos of the party set-up and it looks awesome.”
“Yeah, I’m actually thinking of bailing tonight. Practice killed me.”
Bucky stared at the blonde. His blue eyes were like lasers, searching for the truth, “You’re going to Pizza Charlie’s with that Y/N girl aren’t you.”
Clint was so confused, “What the hell, man?”
“I’m psychic,” Bucky laughed at his friend’s face, “No, I’m messing with you. Mom told me she and Becca are going with them after. Figured you had hopped on in hopes of more time with Y/N.”
“You are a truly terrifying person sometimes.”
Winnie and Y/N came back with her sister and sat down with Bucky and Clint. After the concert had ended, Asher sat down on Y/N’s lap while everyone spoke. He looked up at Clint, “Are you Y/N’s boyfriend?”
Y/N choked on the candy she was eating as Bucky roared in laughter, “Ash, what the fuck?”
The little boy pointed at his sister, “That’s a dollar in the jar. And what, he kept staring at you!”
“You can’t just ask people that without some warning.”
“Okay, how do I warn them?”
Y/N was stammering for an answer and Clint decided to help her, “I’m not your sister’s boyfriend. I go to school with her.”
“Do you want to be her boyfriend?”
“Asher Y/L/N, what has gotten into you? Enough.”
The boy was pouting, “I heard Aunt Nat telling you that you needed a boyfriend and that you need to lie down or something. I don’t know what laying down has to do with the boyfriend thing, but I thought I’d ask.
The situation was like something out of Y/N’s nightmares. Bucky was in tears from laughing, Clint was trying his best not to laugh, Winnie was trying to get Bucky under control and Y/N just stared at the ceiling, willing the universe to give her strength. Finally, she turned to Asher, “I will give you $5 to end this conversation and never bring it up again.”
“Deal!” Y/N slapped the bill into her brother’s hand and rubbed her temples.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 17X6
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Wow this was a tense episode! I liked this episode when I watched it, but then I went back and re-watched it and started thinking about it more deeply when my friend and I recorded our podcast and the more I thought about it the more glaring issues and omissions I caught which made me feel frustrated. Especially because I was expecting to see a bunch of things in this episode, the Mid-Season Finale, that it looks like we’ll have to wait to the Mid-Season Premiere to see and seeing as the show won’t be back for quite a while and we’ve got a long wait ahead of us is rather disappointing.
I think this episode had a great set up, but I feel like they only delivered on about half of what they promised. I think they focused a lot of screen time on scenes that could have been shortened or omitted in favour of more important or interesting scenes that I felt should have been there and were missing and they focused a lot on characters that I don’t particularly care for while at the same time shafting characters that I would have loved to have seen more of or learned more about.
I was so happy that Meredith woke up and was improving! I love the beach motif, but that storyline was starting to drag for me so I was excited to see her back in the game and being her usual self again. I loved her scenes with Tom, but I spent the whole episode expecting someone to say something to Hayes about her being awake and for Hayes to come and visit her and then the episode ended and that didn’t happen and I was so confused. I was sure we were going to get a scene with the two of them in the last ten minutes of the episode, but instead we saw her collapse and they put her on a ventilator without Jackson or Hayes ever discussing the matter or coming to visit her.
And now they can’t talk! They missed their window and I’m so pissed! The show spent ¾ of last season building up a slow burn between Meredith and Hayes which they continued in episodes two and three of Season 17. Hayes asked her out for drinks at the end of last season. They’ve established that they’re close friends. Hayes’ text in the Premiere implies that they’ve had drinks before in his office in between seasons. Hayes is the one that found her in the parking lot. He asked Maggie about her and came to talk to her when he heard she was looking for a new POA. Hayes was the one that Meredith shared her fears of dying with.
And then Meredith becomes unconscious and we don’t see Hayes for two whole episodes and then when he comes back Meredith wakes up and no one bothers to tell him and we don’t see him and Jackson or any of the other characters talk to him about? We don’t see him visit her? This makes no sense! It’s out of character and ridiculous. And here’s my question: Do Hayes and Jackson even know that Meredith woke up? They don’t seem to in this episode and yet characters like Levi know and Maggie, whose a notorious blabbermouth knows and is shouting about on a video call with Winston so presumably the whole hospital would know.
Also is Hayes heard that Meredith was looking for a POA he definitely would have heard that she was awake. They’re close friends and her sisters know that. Plus he’s the one that found her! Jackson and Meredith have been friends for years! Are you seriously telling me that no one told him? That’s ridiculous which makes me wonder if they did in fact know and they did talk about it or go visit her and we just didn’t get to see it on screen. Like there’s a deleted scene that we didn’t get to see.
Which is dumb especially when you consider what they did show us. For example, they had an entire several minute scene where Amelia and Owen operated on the kidnapper in which we learn no new information whatsoever and it does absolutely nothing to advance the personal storylines of either character. On top of that, the scenes that Owen and Amelia have preceding and following the surgery with other characters are so powerful and well done that they could have shorten the surgery scene to a few minutes or made it a montage over music and wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Amelia and Owen are clearly not getting back together at this point even though he’s on the outs with Teddy because Amelia and Link have a child together and Owen for all his faults is not going to take a father away from Scout having lost his own Dad at a young age. So the scene doesn’t do anything to advance their personal storylines other than to establish that they miss their kids, hate kidnappers, and that the world sucks. All things we already knew.
And then there’s that end scene where Carina and Andrew DeLuca, two side characters they have spent absolutely no time developing, decide to chase after a human trafficker like a couple of vigilante crime fighters on a show that’s supposed to be about surgeons. What?!?!? They could have cut or significantly shortened both those scenes and it would have given them time to show Jackson and Hayes finding out that Meredith was awake and talking about it and then Hayes going to visit her. Which would have made a lot more sense than some of the stuff that they did show us, fit with the set up we were provided, and oh hey given us actually new information and character development that was about a medical case!
I was also hoping that Meredith and Hayes were going to talk this episode because I thought there was a good set up there for them to chat, banter, discuss their feelings, and for Meredith to ask Hayes about the idea of them quarantining together at a hotel. They established in this episode that if her stats held she would need to stay in the hospital for another week before they could discharge her so it’s still possible for this to happen when the show returns I just would have liked to have seen them address it this episode and provide that set up.
So to be honest I have mixed feelings about Meredith waking up and starting to feel better only to get worse and have to be placed on a ventilator by the end of the episode. On the one hand, I read an interview saying that they chose to do this storyline to give Ellen Pompeo the opportunity to act without a mask on the beach because of some health concerns that she has with regards to asthma and so I understand why they keep having to go that route. The actor's safety must come first.
This episode was the Mid-Season Finale and it felt tense the whole way through so I expected something bad to happen at the end, but I wasn't sure what it would be. I am sad that we didn't get any new beach scenes or see Derek on the beach like I'd hoped or see Meredith chat with Hayes the way she did with other characters. I'm also discouraged by the fact that she may spend the second half of the season bedridden because that really limits the storylines they can do about her personal life.
Which may in fact be the biggest critique I have of this episode. The Mid-Season Finale and the Mid-Season Premiere are usually pretty important with regards to Meredith’s personal life and her love life in particular. By this point in the season I expected Meredith and Hayes to have confessed their feelings for one another. I was hoping to see them make plans to quarantine at a hotel together. I was expecting to see her on the beach talking to Derek and getting closer.
But no. Instead we got no Meredith and Derek scene on the beach and no Meredith and Hayes at the hospital and I am mad. I mean if you only watched this episode you would have no idea that Meredith was ever married or that her and Hayes are involved at all. We’ve gotten absolutely no movement on Meredith’s personal life in the last three episodes. None. The people that love her and are taking care of her are worried about her and want her to get better. That’s it. There’s no new information here.
Which brings me back to another issue I had with this episode which is that Hayes finally reappeared only to spend most of the episode in the background and he didn't have meaningful conversations with anyone which I felt was a waste. I was so excited to see him back on screen and then I was disappointed when he didn’t really get to do much. Meredith woke up this episode and was well enough to laugh with her sisters and have a full on gab fest with Tom, but her and Hayes didn't have a scene together. Which felt odd and out of character considering that they’ve established. It was also weird that he didn't have any kind of meaningful conversation with Jackson despite working on a case with him that was racially charged and where black girls and woman were the ones affected.
Hayes is an amazing character so for him to be MIA for two episodes and then show back up only for the show not to use his character to his full potential bothered me so much. The fact that the victims and their mothers were black factored heavily into what happened and yet Hayes, who was married to a black woman and has two biracial kids, did not have any kind of meaningful conversation about the circumstances with Jackson, a black man who used his own money to help that girl's mother.
Also can we talk about the fact that Jo tells Richard that she wants to talk about a career change that she’s considering without ever talking to Carina who is an OBGYN and Hayes whose the head of pediatric surgery? WTF? This makes literally no sense and it’s kind of making me hate Jo because it’s so dumb. Also if Levi and Jo know that Meredith is awake Jackson and Hayes must have which makes no sense because they didn’t talk about it or go see her and I am an angry ball of rage!
On top of that, Jo and Levi have had two separate conversations in which Jo has confirmed that she wants to quit surgery altogether 100% to become an OBGYN on a show that is about surgeons to the exclusion of all others. This makes no sense. There just isn’t enough story here so unless Jo is leaving at some point I don’t understand how this is going to work. The show literally wrote off a plethora of characters in the first few seasons in order to focus almost exclusively on surgeons. It was a conscious choice that the showrunners made.
Several of the show’s current showrunners and writers were a part of the show when that decision was made so it's not like they don’t know why and how that happened. Which makes this storyline all the more bonkers to me. Also, who cares? Watching Jo perform surgery is interesting. Watching her catch babies is not. Also they’ve established that Jo and Hayes are friends and that she’s rooting for him and Meredith so why is she talking to Levi, who is a surgical resident, about this instead of her friend Hayes?
I’m also not as certain that Tom is going to die as I was before. At first I thought him getting better might be a surge, but now his improvement seems more like a for sure thing. And they did the whole storyline about his roommate dying so it would be a bit anti-climactic and predictable to me to have him suddenly die. On the other hand, Meredith is the star of the show and so if she lives it's likely someone else on the show will die of this disease and Tom seems the most likely candidate right now. I think Tom will be upset, panicked, and distraught when he finds out that Meredith had to be put on a vent. I think Teddy and Maggie will have to work very hard to calm him down which gives potential for some good Teddy and Tom scenes.
My heart broke for Bailey this episode like it did last week and while I think she should have taken some time off to grieve I understand why she didn't. Bailey is a work horse, a workaholic, and she always has been. That hasn't changed and as she says if she goes home she risks infecting Tuck and Joey with COVID. She could stay in a hotel, but it would be pretty hard for her to sit around and grieve when she knows patients are dying at Grey Sloan and she can help them. I hope she finds time to grieve and process the loss properly in the second half of the season once Meredith improves and gets better.
I loved Richard’s speech to Teddy. I think he told her exactly what she needed to hear. He told her what everyone else was too afraid to tell her or didn't want to because they were mad at her for what she did. Richard speaks from experience as a recovering alcoholic whose screwed up royally in his life so I think that gave his advice weight and gravitas. Richard is right. Teddy needs to name her demons, deal with her issues, come clean, and stop feeling sorry for herself. While I'm happy that Teddy finally told Owen the truth about who Allison was to her, she neglected to mention that her and Allison were having an affair.
Which is highly relevant seeing as she starts the conversation off by telling him that she doesn't know why she cheated on him with Tom. She tells some of the truth, but not the whole truth. She needs to come all the way clean. I don't think Owen will ever look at Teddy the same way again and I honestly don't see any hope for them at this point. Hopefully they can co-parent together peacefully. Also do we really need more scenes of Owen and Teddy fighting? Come on?
The one big bright spot in this episode for me was the scenes between Maggie and Winston! I love them! They are so cute together! And since it appears that Winston has now moved to Seattle I hope to see a lot more of them going forward. I love that he brought her flowers and was exactly what she needed in that moment. Now if only we could get that kind of movement on the Meredith and Hayes front that would be great.
I was surprised to see Opal, the fake aunt from last season who turned out to be a human trafficker, return. And I'm a bit surprised that they chose to bring the human trafficking storyline back and make it a reoccurring plot. I felt that they wrapped that storyline up pretty neatly and I didn't have any real desire for it to make a comeback. Plus, that storyline centered on DeLuca as a character and since I'm not a fan the storyline didn’t really do much for me. It's sad and scary, but it doesn't leave me excited to find out what happens next.
My favourite scene and quote from this episode was when Owen finished telling the kidnapper that he was the devil's barbeque and what a complete scumbag he was only for the guy's face to droop and for him to pass out causing Owen to remark, "Bold move Bob," and for him to realize he'd now need to resuscitate and save the guy's life from a possible stroke. That made me crack up laughing! I'm not an Owen fan most of the time, but I must say he's had some great one liners the last few seasons.
As for what’s to come when the show returns in 2021, the Season 17 Premiere blew all of my past predictions out of the water so I'm fully expecting to be wrong about several things going into the second half of the season. That being said, I think Meredith will pull through. I think Tom or one of the other characters will die. I think Winston will join Grey Sloan Memorial and start working there. I hope that both Hayes and Winston get the full screen time that they deserve and that they stop focusing on characters we don’t give a damn about because they’ve spent no time developing them.
I think we'll finally get to see the Meredith and Derek embrace that we've been hoping for and I think we'll see Jackson and Jo's relationship develop more. I hope that we see Hayes come and visit Meredith while she's out and that when she gets better we see them talk. I really felt like that was missing these last three episodes. I'd also love for them to quarantine at the hotel together after she's discharged!
Until next time!

What Hogwarts houses do you think the charmed ones are in?
hmm okay
so for starters i think prue is a slytherin, less because of the whole workaholic factor / bitchy character thing, but more because of how fierce she is to protect her family. they are her chosen circle and she will protect them to her dying breath. which i know gryffindor is sort of more the “loyalty” house, but imo it’s much more of a slytherin thing to have a really small close circle that is meticulously selected who you will be endlessly loyal to. on top of that, her undeniable ambition, especially at the expense of her own happiness. gryffindor is about chasing you passions, ravenclaw is following your mind, hufflepuff is doing your due diligence, but only slytherin is going into something you really don’t even want to do but still putting in endless effort into it because you have to be the best. we see a great example of this with prue and her jobs at the museum and the auction house. prue left behind her true passion of photography so her family could keep the manor, putting her love for her circle in front of her own personal desires, but that didn’t mean she trudged through her nine to five. she dedicated herself to her field and became one of the best, because that’s the type of person she is. we didn’t see her chase after her true dream until she was confident that the house was secure and her loved ones were safe, and then proceeded to pursue photography with just as much zeal as she did her previous work. on the darker side of the slytherin coin, we see her but her circle above the wellbeing of common folk in all hell breaks loose. when she needs to get piper to the hospital before she dies, she’s at her absolute most basic instinct. she launches people through the air not really caring where they land because she cannot let piper die and she’s willing to do whatever it takes make sure that doesn’t happen. and then for my third and final point, she’s the best at like a character study. she can read people and then work them to her advantage. she can easily get under people’s skin, or, on the flipside, pretend to be the person she knows they want to see, another very slytherin trait imo
then i would probably go and say piper is a gryffindor. like surface level i could easily go hufflepuff bc you know, she’s obviously a hard worker and all that but i just have to say gryffindor. because even though she was always sort of teased as the chicken of the family, she does have undeniable amounts of bravery, even before prue’s death. her speech to the elders in once upon a time?
i bet you guys think this is real funny, don't you haven't you taken enough from me? you have to send trolls to kick me while i'm down! i had a nice normal life once and you took that from me. you took my boyfriend, you took my life, the least you could do is leave me my freakin car keys. i am a good person, i am a good witch and damn it i would've made a great wife. and how dare you take that from me? i deserve... no, you know what? i demand that you send him back to me. you hear me? right now. i am going to stand in this very spot until you send leo back to me.
quintessential gryffindor. the gall, the rooting your feet where you stand, cursing out of a higher power, i mean hello? and she’s always been a bit headstrong. hufflepuff is more putting your head down and doing the work because you know it’s right, gryffindor is a little different. piper’s work ethic comes from her heart, if she puts effort into something, it’s because she holds a passion for it. if she doesn’t, well... right and wrong go a little out the window. in brain drain, she was willing to barter with the source just so she could have a normal life. her heart wasn’t in it, ergo she had no desire to put the work in. a lot more gryffindor than hufflepuff to me.
and then possibly my most controversial take i’m saying phoebe is a ravenclaw because okay like think about it a lot of what she does is driven by sort of this curiosity this passion for the unknown and desire to learn more. she never knew her dad, so after high school she flew halfway across the country just to try to find him. she was the first one to discover the book, and the first one to dive headfirst into witchcraft. if i’m gonna cite some sources here’s a piece of dialogue from the painted world:
phoebe: you weren’t at that job interview surrounded by all those college graduates. you don't know how good it feels to be really smart. smart people are respected, taken seriously. and really smart women, forget about it. then again, you probably do know what i'm talking about. you have a four-year degree.
piper: so what? phoebe, i will never have the kind of smarts you have, no matter what i do.
so from this we can gather that phoebe doesn’t like being viewed as unintelligent. in fact, she really wants to be considered smart, she wants to be smart. to which piper retorts that she is smart, but more street smarts. phoebe knows things that can’t be found in a textbook, she can operate in society at a much higher capacity than her sisters; it seems like everyone loves phoebe. also, she can go toe to toe with prue in an argument, and that takes a considerable amount of brains. and then we go on to see phoebe enroll in college and graduate with a ba in psychology, and then goes on to return to college to get a phd in psychology. and, of course, on top of that, she’s the best spell writer of the bunch, writing 40+ original spells in the show, including the spell to vanquish the source, the most powerful spell the charmed ones have. very ravenclaw, if you ask me.
uhh but tragically i’m not gonna round this out by using all four house paige is a slytherin. now, you could argue paige for about every house but i’m arguing slytherin. bc okay. so much of paige’s life was about being the best person she could be for herself, you know? like her adolescence was very “stereotypical slytherin” with excess drug use, being goth and a dramatic fuck up to your parents, stuff you see on pinterest moodboards yknow. and then she becomes a social worker, which people would usually go to as like hufflepuff support. but like,, paige was Not like a hard worker at that job. she held a passion for it yes, and she did get things done, but she was notoriously late and behind schedule, and had a bad habit of vanishing for extra long lunch breaks (even before she was a witch, if i’m not mistaken). furthermore, her methods of getting things done are less doing the works in a solid and proper method, and more about cutting corners and using her own cunning to get it done in the most efficient way possible (i mean, she was the one to use personal gain undeniably the most). and this isn’t an insult! when she first got the book of shadows, she immediately took it to work and started using it in her cases. yes, this was “personal gain”, but she was doing it to help others. with the flipside being like she didn’t need magic & should probably have done her task properly so the use of it wasn’t necessary but like i feel like that only makes it more slytherin. and then moving on, her superwitch phase was obviously her putting herself in competition with prue, and her obsessive competitive need to be the best. slytherin. and then the next season she tried to dodge magic in an attempt to reclaim her life and find some greater meaning to herself. slytherin. her whole dynamic with kyle and being chill with him knocking out sheridan was very slytherin. in season 8, her whole early competition growing into flirty with henry is very slytherin. her dynamic with her father is very slytherin (calling back to what i was talking about prue, she has closely selected her inner circle and it takes a lot of work to get it. we also see this in early season four onward with her having trouble to come to terms with new sister living and accepting piper and phoebe into her circle.) what i’m getting at is paige is a very much a slytherin when you stop to think about it.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Pulling into the parking lot, I smiled to myself as I looked at my new place of work. All my life I had grown up helping my dad work on his car and motorbikes, it just seemed natural to me. Whereas my sister was the typical girly-girl, playing with her dolls and dressing up, I would roll in covered in oil or mud, helping carry the tool box around; I giggled as I thought back to that time, we were so different yet had the strongest bond. This was all I wanted. A simple mechanic job, surrounded by what I loved doing. I had grown up in Charming too, I could never leave this place.
Confidently strolling towards the office, I kept my head held high as I realised that this place was mostly run by men. Shame really, we needed more women in this industry.
“Hey, (Y/N) (Y/L/N)?” Gemma, the woman who interviewed me called out.
“Yeah, hi!” I said back, shaking her hand.
“Good to see you again, congrats on getting the job.”
“Thank you. I brought those papers you asked for.”
“Great, let’s show you around.”
I had instantly liked Gemma when she first interviewed me, but now I was more sure than ever that she would be a good boss. Her attitude was just amazing, I loved how she was clearly the boss who ran the place, the men respected her too. After showing me where everything was, we ended up back outside, and I couldn’t stop myself from staring at the bikes lined up.
“You got one of your own?” she asked me.
“No, used to. Had to sell it unfortunately, but my dad had one too. They’re beautiful.”
She chuckled.“You know who we are, don’t you?”
I nodded.“Yeah, you’re an MC, Sons of Anarchy to be exact.”
“I’m assuming that’s what attracted you to the job?”
I laughed at that.“No, it’s just a perk.”
My dad had always told me of this MC, almost praising them sometimes. My mom on the other hand, not so much; she could see that they were helping their community, their family, but of course, this couldn’t outweigh the amount of illegal shit they got up to. I always found it exciting. That was something me and my sister had in common, we loved the bad boy look (as most girls do at some stage in their lives), and these men were just the right bunch for us to crush on. Being in an MC interested me. I didn’t know whether it was the danger, the mechanical side, or how close they all were that pulled me towards that life. And here I was, working for them.
“I think you’re going to be just fine here. Hey, I know it’s sudden, but would you mind covering someone’s shift this afternoon? It’s in an hour but he’s called in sick and I need this job doing today.”
“No problem. Might as well get going whilst I’m here.”
I changed into the overalls, pulling down the top half and tying the arms around my waist before throwing my hair up in a ponytail. Normally I was a very confident person, but nerves were starting to kick in. I had only ever worked on cars and such by myself or with my dad, and although I had the degrees necessary, I could feel doubt starting to creep in; it wasn’t a nice feeling.
“Hey, are you supposed to be in here?” I heard someone say behind me as I shut my locker.
“Uh,” I turned around, greeted by a handsome, blonde man,“yeah, I just started today.”
“Oh, right. Sorry, too used to saying that.”
“You’re too used to asking women if they should be in here?”
“Sorry, ignore that. I’m Jax.”
I shook his hand.“(Y/N).”
He looked me up and down before turning away, making me smile. I wasn’t going to lie, I was flattered that someone as gorgeous as him was checking me out. As he turned around, I couldn’t help but stare at his kutte, admiring it slightly. He must have noticed because as he took it off, he looked at me over his shoulder.
“Gotta admit, the chicks dig it.”
“I think I dig it for different reasons.”
“Oh?”
“I’ve always wanted to be in an MC, ever since my dad first introduced me to bikes.”
“Really? Don’t see many women wanting that...actually there aren’t any women patched in.”
“What?! Are you serious?”
“Yeah, it just hasn’t happened yet.”
I thought for a moment, a slow smile appearing on my face.“What does it take to get patched in?”
“You serious? You got any idea the shit you got to go through?”
“No, that’s why I’m asking.”
“Uh...listen, I’m the President of this MC-”
“Oh, shit. This isn’t a good start is it?”
“Look, the fact I’ve never even heard of a woman being patched in means that it’s there for a reason.”
“I mean, it could be that a bunch of males just made that rule because that’s what men were, and sometimes still, are like.”
He nodded to me.“Yeah, it could be. I would have to look into it.”
“So that’s not a no?”
“It’s not a yes.” he smirked.“I’ve literally just met you, I shouldn’t even be considering it.”
“Hm, what does that tell you about me?”
I winked at him, sultry leaving the room with a new found confidence, adrenaline pumping through my veins. With confidence practically radiating off me, I was greeted with another Son, Juice, who was told to show me the ropes before I started working. I was easily able to joke with him as he showed me around, introducing me to everyone else that was there. It seemed easy, everything was where it would usually be, and I just wanted to get started. Once he left, I instantly started working, fully focused on the work in front of me.
As I would bend over the bonnet or lean down to grab another tool, I would notice some of the other men staring; there were those that tried to hide it, others didn’t care if I had seen them. Sometimes I would stare back, instantly causing them to look away, which always made me laugh. They were all working for the Sons of Anarchy, a notorious biker gang, they dealt with illegal stuff daily, yet somehow the presence of a woman made them nervous.
The weeks flew by, and I couldn’t express how much I was loving my job. Not only was I passionate about my work, the people around me became like a second family. It was so easy to fit in with them. When I told my dad everything, instead of being concerned that his daughter was affiliated with a gang, he was excited, asking me tonnes of questions, as if they were celebrities. But I started noticing that I would be given different tasks to the other workers, ones not involving the garage. It was usually Jax who gave the orders, pulling me away from whatever I was working on to ask a favour. I would go with other members for small tasks, like collecting payments; this definitely wasn’t in my job description. These tasks kept appearing, and I was starting to get an incline that something was going to change for me.
Like any other working day, I turned up to work, hanging up my belongings and checking my appearance. I heard someone else enter, making me smile as I went to greet them.
“Morning Jax.” I beamed.
“You’re needed, now.” He said coldly, a dark look on his face.
My smile instantly disappeared.“Oh, for what?”
He didn’t say anything, only gesturing with his head to follow. Nerves started to build in my stomach. Had I done something wrong? What could I have possibly done? Did a job go bad? Was a customer unhappy? Numerous scenarios whizzed through my mind as I followed him to their meeting room, where they had their ‘church’ meetings. I could see all of the club members sat around the table. This was serious.
“Stand over there.” Jax ordered, sitting at the head of the table as I stood opposite.
It went silent, all of the men looking at me intensely.
“Look, we appreciate all you do. It’s clear to see that you’re a hard worker, you know what you’re doing. But I’m afraid that isn’t enough.”
I clasped my hands together, gripping onto them tightly as I listened.
“We’re gonna have to put more on you, show us that you really want to do this.”
I felt something slap onto my back, slinging around my shoulders. I jumped slightly, grabbing onto the material before it slipped off. As I brought it in front of my eyes, my mouth dropped open in shock, disbelief strewn across my face.
“No fucking way!” I exclaimed.
They had handed me a kutte, stating that I was a prospect to the Sons of Anarchy! I wasn’t sure if I was dreaming.
“It’s official, you’re our newest prospect. Means we get to boss you around a lot more.” Jax smirked.
“You’re all assholes, I was about to start crying.” I scoffed as I put it on.
“Looking good lass.” Chibs called out.
“How come I can become a prospect? I thought women couldn’t be one?”
Jax explained,“Well, the way we see it, the rules are old fashioned. I could tell that you were serious about it too. You’re our guinea pig.”
Congratulations were passed around to me as the meeting adjourned, smiles on everyone’s faces. I caught my reflection in the mirror. I looked fucking sexy and powerful with this kutte, it was a new part of my life and who I would be.
“I’ve got your first order actually.” Jax, who hadn’t left the room, said.
“Oh? And what would that be, Mr President?”
“For your ass to be at this clubhouse tonight for a party.”
“I think I can manage that.”
“And wear the kutte. Don’ know why I’ve not let a girl wear it before.”
“Glad you like it just as much as I do.”
His teasing tone stopped for a moment.“You do know how serious this is, don’t you?”
I nodded.“Yes, and I wouldn’t put myself in this position otherwise.”
Once I finsihed my shift, I sped home, racking my brain to think of something to wear. My first party and first time being a prospect, it was daunting. I was making history here, being the first woman prospect. They had seen something in me, and I was going to prove that I was worth the title and much more.
Checking myself out once more in the mirror, I took yet another picture of me, still not over how I looked; I had done an amazing job of getting glammed up. Jax had offered to take me to the party, even though I could easily travel there myself. Looking over the selfies I just took, I giggled as I sent one to him, along with the message that I was finally ready. I must have received the world’s fastest reply, he was on his way.
“Someone’s out to impress tonight.” Jax commented after giving me a wolf whistle as I stepped outside.
I gave a little spin, taking the helmet from his outstretched hand.“Don’t I always? Come on, let’s get going, I’m in desperate need of a drink.”
For the first hour, Jax stayed by my side. His hand was around my waist, not caring what it looked like to others. Instead of it embarrassing me or making me uncomfortable, I relished in the fact that he was paying attention to me. Jax lured me in. I didn’t know everything about him, hardly anything actually but that made me want to know him more; he was interesting to me, not to mention undeniably hot. I felt a little lost when he left me for a moment, but I had to remain confident. I was a prospect, and although we had to earn respect, I didn’t want to come off as someone who would just roll over when someone told me to. Especially when two crow eaters approached me, as if I were some sort of prey.
“Isn’t this funny Jackie? The sons must be playing a practical joke.” one spoke.
Jackie obnoxiously cackled.“Oh god, it’s pathetic how she craves so much attention.”
Hypocrites.
“Can I help you?” I snapped.
“Oh, no. We’re just enjoying the entertainment for the evening.”
“Do you honestly have nothing better to do when you aren’t being used as a sex toy?”
“Listen sweetie, I don’t know why they’ve let you become a prospect, quite tragic actually; makes you more frigid than you already are.”
“How would you know what frigid means?”
“You have to respect us. We’re part of the club.”
“No, you’re really not. I work for patched in club members, and the only woman I’ll ever take orders from is Gemma. Stop kidding yourselves and just get on with whatever it is you do.”
“I’ll be telling Jax about this....once we’ve had our fun.”
No, Jax and I weren’t an item, we hadn’t even spoke about anything remotely close to that. She was trying to push my buttons, and although deep down it was working, I masked that.
“You do that. Now let me get on with my night.”
I turned away, leaning against the end of the bar. My hopes of them leaving were false, making me roll my eyes as they came up with more cute comebacks. That’s when I spotted a crate of beers on the floor, giving me a slightly petty idea. Picking up one, I shook it, turning back to face the girls.
“Look, you’re bitchy comments are great, they’re really making me sad,” I sarcastically said, pouting slightly,“but I really think you should cool off.”
I opened the bottle, letting it spray all over the whores. It soaked their skimpy dresses, their squealing grabbing the attention of everyone. It was silent for only a moment before laughing and yelling followed. I laughed too, really wishing that I had done something more to them. They whined as they rushed off, and that was when I knew I had made some enemies. But before I could celebrate my victory, I was harshly yanked out of the room. I panicked as I saw that it was Jax. Shit, was I really not supposed to do that? Should I have been the bigger person?
As he pushed me up against a wall, I could hear how heavy his breathing was.“That was fucking hot.”
“What?” I breathed out.
“Back there, what you did. Everyday I get more and more attracted to you.”
“J-Jax, are you serious?”
“Yes, look if you don’t want this then just say-”
I quickly grabbed his hand, it was my turn to drag him into another room.“Fuck yes, say no more.”

Survey #259
"i went straight to heaven, but i kept on knockin’.”
What's something that makes you feel more creative? Music. What are the last three nail polish colors you wore? Wow, idk the last time I wore nail polish, but probably black or maroon. What's the last thing you binge watched? Avatar: The Last Airbender w/ Sara. Do you watch youtube videos or tv shows more? YouTube is essentially my TV. Quite literally - I don't have a television in my room because I never watch it. What's a DIY project that you don't think actually works? Oh dude, plenty. I have DIY-obsessed friends online as well as a Pinterest, I know this shit, lmao. I can name one though with total certainty because I was with a friend when she tried that disgusting "YOU CAN MAKE cuPCAkES IN A C uP!!!!!" crap. It's the most eggy shit you'll ever try. Do you collect Mason jars to use for crafts? No, but I think those crafts are generally super cute. Have you ever gotten rid of something and then regretted it? If so, what? (or what's one thing?) Oh yeah, one of my biggest being my senior prom pictures, but not for the reason you'd expect (save for two pictures of us that're just REALLY fuckin cute): I want them back because goddamn I was pretty ok and I miss that now that I hate my body every waking moment of every day. :^) What color is the zip-up hoodie you wear the most? What were some of your favorite things when you were young? DINOSAURS, Webkinz, Pokemon, and Spyro, to name a few. What did you grow up listening to? Mostly country and pop music. What games did you play in the past? Spyro was my obsession, and I also loved hunting games (ironic, as irl I would never even consider it???) as well as fishing ones, plus Crash Bandicoot. What was the best birthday party you ever had? I'm not sure. How about the best vacation? I'm unsure; I haven't really been on a lot. Do you have any secrets you never intend to tell? Yup. What memory would you like to disappear from your mind forever? A nightmare I had about my dad. If you were someone else, would you be friends with the person you are now? Yeah. Do you consider yourself a smart person? No. What friend in your life has been the greatest influence to you? I don't know. Where is the scariest place you’ve ever been? What made it so terrifying? I shared a bedroom with an EXTREMELY volatile, violent woman once in the mental hospital. As in she had to go in solitary when she had a violent episode, during which she became very destructive to her surroundings, so as you could guess, I was worried about my own wellbeing. She was eventually moved because I was that uncomfortable. Did you celebrate Easter? Are there any holidays you are more inclined to celebrate than others? If so, which? Well, Easter hasn't come yet, but we'll probably go to my sister's house for the kids. We'll celebrate Christmas and Thanksgiving without fail. We don't pay much attention to others. I'd LOVE to do something for Halloween, we just never have anywhere to go/anything to do. What was the last thing you deleted? Pictures. What colors make up the majority of your wardrobe? Is there any color you like, but don’t wear often? There's black there. Oh, there's s'more black. What's that???? More bLACK????? MAN, I wish I could pull off pink. When was the last time you were in any amount of pain? I had a pretty intense headache yesterday. Who was the last person to hug you? Do you hug this person often? My niece, and yeah, every time I visit. What are you most likely to argue or debate about? The fact I almost never leave my pajamas lmao. What was the last show you watched? Have you seen it before, or is it something you’re watching for the first time? A few days back, I was reeeaaally bored and actually watched TV deliberately, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?????? It was The Witcher; wasn't bad. I'd be willing to watch more. How would you describe your taste in clothing? What would a dream outfit look like to you? uuuuuggggGHHHHHHHH let me be GOTH. Give me a corsette if they weren't notoriously uncomf with plenty of chains 'n stuff. BIG, SPIKY BOOTS. SKINNY LEATHER PANTS. UUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHH. Have you ever tried snowboarding? No. What’s your favorite planet besides Earth? Saturn is dope. Would you ever be a coach for any sport? Nope. What color of eyes do you have? Blue. Do you like tacos? NOOOOOOOOO. White or red wine? Wine is gross. Do you prefer foxes or wolves? Foxes. What’s the youngest you would consider dating? No younger than 21. Do you think suits are sexy? mmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Did you go to high school with your current best friend? No. What is your boss’ (or school prinicpal’s) name? N/A Were you a fan of Michael Jackson before he died? I was never really a fan. Respected him immensely as a musician, I just didn't care much about his music. Turkey or ham for Thanksgiving? Ham. Turkey is always too dry and stringy. Do you look good in hats? I wouldn't know, I haven't worn one in forever. Never with short hair. Colons or equal signs for your smiley face's eyes? Colons. Do you like architecture? If so, do you have a favourite style or structure that you’d like to make note? Yes, and I should really have an answer for this, as architecture was a big part in Art History... Ummm Etruscan stands out, and of course Roman/Greek (even after the class I don't remember their differences well...). I love Middle Eastern architecture, too. What is one of your favorite words, in any language, and why? I just love the sound of "serendipity," as well as uhhhh "sakura" in Japanese and "kanji" in Chinese. I'm trying to think of a German one, as there certainly are some, but they're evading me right now. Where is the farthest you’ve travelled on foot? JESUS FUCK probably going to get Sara's brother from school, mother of all that is holy. But it might just feel like it because it was during the peak of my muscle atrophy in my legs. Are there any songs that you perhaps like but avoid because it makes you sad when heard? A good number. Do you like the area that you live in? What do you like or dislike about the area? NO. There's not shit to do and it's not aesthetically pleasing at all. Do you have a memory of when you really thought that you have lucked out on something? If so, what was it? Uhhhhh. A handful, I guess? Oh, uh, the suicide attempt to name one and probably the biggest. I took way too many of those pills to experience almost zero symptoms of an overdose; I did look up what "too many" was, because I wanted that. I'd say I was pretty fuckin lucky. If you have apps on your mobile phone, which one do you use the most? Facebook. Which do you like better: fantasy or science fiction novels? Why? FANTASY!!! I think it allows more creativity and possibilities of something magically "making sense" because yeah, it's fantasy. Science fiction has more "realness" to it, more, obviously, scientific elements versus make-believe. Do you like opossums? Do you think it is ethically right for others to keep opossums as pets? OPOSSUMS!!!!!!!!! ARE!!!!!!!!!! FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're my second-favorite animals kdsja;lkdjaw. BUT ANYWAY, no, unless it's for rescue reasons. When was the last time someone asked you a huge favor or advice? Do you get asked often by this person? Oh I have no idea. Probably my mom? And no, definitely not. She hates asking for help. What are your thoughts on nihilism? I definitely get it, but it's not my personal outlook. Do you like the snow? More like love. What are your thoughts and feelings towards work/jobs in general? I don't know? I've never even had a real, steady job, so it's hard to really answer... I've only had bad experiences. It's kinda weird to me how you have to work your ass off (usually) to get a job you enjoy, as well as slave for some stupid green paper until the day you die just to stay alive and healthy. But at the same time, it offers a sense of fulfilment and is as well something productive and beneficial to the masses to do. Civilization would be very, very different and unadvanced if we were without them, so I guess it is a necessary thing. Humans gotta work together to keep where we're at. Do you believe in astrology? I've never actually elaborated why I don't believe in it so there ya go: not in the slightest. All it does is offer extremely broad characteristics that, in some light, almost anyone can relate to so they feel included in something. We naturally want to "belong" within something as social creatures, and astrology is an easy one with it being so vast. It gives equally indirect advice that can be applied to a multitude of situations, so people just mold what they read to fit their world. Don't base your goddamn life choices on the random positioning of shit in space. What is something that you’ve made/created? Do you take pride in your creations? Well, way way way too many OCs that I do indeed love a hell of a lot. If you have a Tumblr account, do you have any followers that you wish would not follow you? Well I'm sure there are bots. What kind of books do you generally enjoy to read? Fantasy stuff, mostly. But I also love novels with deep meaning, particularly about life in general. A good plot is mandatory. Does the quality of a video, on YouTube or a television, matter to you? I mean of course in some situations, like if I'm watching something educational/something to gain visual knowledge from. What is one situation that may cause you to become shy (if there is any)? Don't don't don't don't don't point out that my serious interests/things I massively love are "weird" like it's been years and I can still barely explain why my biggest tattoo is a tribute to some fuckface on the Internet lmao. When one is depressed, what can a friend do about it? Do you find that there is a good method to approach people in helping them combat depression? It is SO important to, first, ask them what they want. Do they want advice, an ear to just listen, just your presence, to be alone? As for combating depression, that greatly depends on the origin (if any) of theirs. There are so many factors in answering this question, but what I mentioned should, imo, always be the start. Do you tend to listen to music that embraces your mood or does music dictate your mood? Is it a little bit of both? Definitely both. When I'm sad though, I'm almost definitely listening to somber music too. Do you find yourself to be generally a forgiving person? I'm too goddamn forgiving. Do you have an embarrassing memory that you now look back at and can laugh? If so and if you’re comfortable, could you share one here? Omg I have a Bible-length collection of those suckers. I'd prefer not to. What is one skill that you have worked hard to develop? Is there still room for improvement on that skill? Damn, anxiety-coping mechanisms and actually trusting them to help me through attacks. I used to be convinced that they were useless because it just wouldn't work and weren't immediately effective, but you've gooooooot to trust the process, friends. What do you consider to be your main passion(s) and how did they come about? Spreading awareness of the seriousness of mental health and the comfort of knowing there's hope. You can never stop pushing. My own experience with mental health struggles is definitely the deeeep roots of that. Who do you think influenced you the most in your life so far? Why? Jason changed my life in many ways. Trauma does that. He taught me a lot about the necessity of having faith in yourself to survive on your own, a shitload about love and how it's not some fairy tale, and that people change, even those you least expect to. What is something that you have overheard people talk about that really bothered you? I could name more than a few things about race stuff, living where I do. What do you normally say or how do you normally act in response to a compliment? I usually do this shy laugh and say "thank you" with too much enthusiasm. How many books do you own? Do you have more physical books than electronic books? I've no clue where a lot of my old ones are. I have no electronic ones; I strongly prefer to read a physical book. What are your thoughts on higher education? Is it really necessary? In your opinion, what changes can be made? Depending on your aspiring career, it can be necessary, but just as easily, it can be unnecessary. I know for a fucking fact it should not be NEARLY as expensive as it is. Maybe even free, but I have no idea what monetary concerns that could cause with whoever runs the place. Have you ever received a heartfelt compliment from a stranger? Probably at some point. How many people would you consider to be extremely close to you? "Extremely"... like three lmao. Maybe one more or so. When was the last time you had to speak to a crowd? How well did that go? When I was taking pictures at a wedding last. It went okay. How would you describe your general outlook towards humanity? We by no means deserve to be the apex predator and Earth would be a shitload better without us. How long do you think you could last without any contact with your significant other, best friend, or a person whom you consider would be the closest to you? I'll use my mom here, in which case idk. I don't particularly want to find out. I talk to her at LEAST by text daily. Every day now that she can't work/is always home with me. Have you ever realised that someone was lying, but it was too late to confront them? Nope. Eventually speaking up is how I lost her, but.

Your Jacob’s Character by @hufflepunk-asfrick and (spiritually) MC Character Challenge by @cptaincarswell (neither of whom will actually be tagged because the ship sailed on these months ago and I don’t want to clutter their notifications)
Rules: Make a collage of characters that summarize what you headcanon your MC’s brother, Jacob to be like! Tag who you want to see do this
and
Rules: Choose five characters (movie or tv show) that represent your MC/ MC’s different layers.
So uhhhhhhhhhh... here’s the thing. I was tagged in the Jacob Character Challenge by @wilhelminafujita and indirectly by @batgirl-87 a long ass time ago. I was also tagged by @batgirl-87 in the MC Character Challenge but I don’t... watch enough TV or movies to actually do that one all the way! So I’ve gone ahead and merged the two challenges into just a collage of five characters for both of them
Explanations for the choices below!
We’re going clockwise from the top of each collage
Jacob Caradoc Dwyn
Ephemer (Kingdom Hearts series)
I made a direct comparison a long time ago, but tell me if this is familiar: an overly curious boy goes missing while investigating a huge conspiracy and you spend most of the prequel mobile game he stars in hunting his ghosting ass down while he occasionally sends you vision messages
The similarities go way beyond just their roles, though. Ephemer is a big conspiracy theorist who hates not knowing things and will do whatever it takes to hunt down the truth
Most people thought he was absolutely crazy, as you do when someone tells you that they think you’re all secretly being sent into holographic simulations when you go on missions (but he was also totally right)
He’s also notoriously overconfident in combat. You meet Ephemer because he decided to take on a monster way stronger than he was and got seriously hurt. But at least he’s self-aware enough to admit it (but also... is really gung-ho about fighting things in the current arc...)
He’s a genuinely nice guy but not above needling people to get the information he wants from them
Loyal as hell to the people he cares about and protective of them. Like, he really doesn’t know your Avatar all that well but still rushes out onto a battlefield to save you and volunteers himself to go on a potentially deadly mission with you just so that you won’t have to go alone
...buuuuuuut he’s not above going off on his own without telling anyone in an attempt to keep them “safe” and then getting into serious trouble for it
Is currently having a panic attack because he was placed in charge of a gang of teenagers and has to be The Responsible One™ but clearly hates it, which is what I imagine Jacob would do if you ever made him a leader in any capacity
Messy hair and an adorable smile
Honestly it’d be easier to list the things that Jacob and Ephemer don’t have in common. I didn’t intentionally base Jacob off of him but I won’t deny that a lot of Ephemer probably influenced Jacob’s character
Sokka (Avatar the Last Airbender)
Sokka’s on here mostly due to his relationship with his little sister, Katara. Jacob’s relationship with Seren is a very strong mirror to the Southern Water Tribe siblings
He’s really smart, but because he’s also very goofy a lot of people tend to overlook just how much creativity and ingenuity he brings to the table
No, Sokka’s seriously one of the smartest members of the cast. There’s a reason they call him “the ideas guy.” He knows when to get serious and break out the logic and reason. It’s never stopped him from being a loud, boisterous goofball, though
Cursed by the universe to a lifetime of misfortune
Sokka is very loyal and protective to his younger sister, but because she’s generally more emotionally measured it comes across like she’s taking care of him. And he knows that and really loves her for it, but it just makes him want to take care of her more, since that should be his job
They bicker a lot, but in the end they’re completely inseparable
Ellie (Up)
A bit of an unorthodox choice, but Ellie really is the physical embodiment of Jacob’s excitement to travel and Hufflepuff hard-working nature in a lot of ways
Ellie has huge dreams of exploring distant lands and she goes at it with such gusto that it’s completely infectious
Some people would argue that it’s overwhelming, but Ellie doesn’t really care about their opinion. She’s doing it for her own satisfaction!
When she falls in love with Carl, her goal changes to having both of them go on the trip together in much the same way that Jacob would really prefer traveling with his precious little sister, Seren, than by himself because they’re a team
She saves up her whole life for this trip. She never once gives up on it entirely. Despite the setbacks, despite the fact that she passed away before ever even accomplishing her goal, she was always working towards that great adventure
Sherlock Holmes (Ace Attorney Series - The Great Ace Attorney/Dai Gyakuten Saiban)
I am... so glad that I didn’t make this until after the fan translation for DGS came out because hoooooooo boy does Ace Attorney Sherlock give me mad Jacob Dwyn vibes
(I was always going to make Jacob a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so this worked out way too perfectly)
Ace Attorney Sherlock is legitimately very perceptive and good at picking up on minute details, but because he’s so overzealous about his detective work he has a tendency to jump to conclusions a little too fast and usually ends up having to be redirected by his more calm partner
Once you get him on the right track, though, he’s an unstoppable crime-solving machine (with the bonus ability of being really damn good at sleight-of-hand stuff)
He’s also hugely eccentric. Would Jacob Dwyn just hang from the wall by a hook while wearing an expensive tiara for the hell of it during an investigation? Ooooooh yes
Jacob’s a lot less wildly inaccurate, though, because he does genuinely want to solve the crimes to the best of his ability
I am absolutely certain that Jacob wouldn’t hesitate to tell everyone he knows about all of the mysteries he’s solved with his sister because guys. Guys it was so cool. Yes, I am THE Jacob Dwyn of the Dwyn Detective Agency please pay attention to my cool job
Sherlock is a Good Dad and Jacob is a Good Brother. Case Closed.
Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Marvel Cinematic Universe - Ant Man)
By this point you should be seeing a pattern. Smart, creative guy who’s also pretty goofy who has a younger female character that he loves greatly
Scott, though, isn’t above doing a lot of really sneaky stuff and taking unscrupulous jobs to get to his (admittedly pretty noble) goals. He adds that slight bit of moral edge we were missing from the Jacob equation. Not much, but some
Like I just think of the scene where Scott uses a bunch of creative methods to break into Pym’s house. Methods that require a lot of knowledge of security systems and science
He also does not let the rules stop him from doing what he thinks is right. It’s how he ended up in prison in the first place
Jacob Dwyn would unironically get very excited about a “Time Heist” and you can’t convince me otherwise
Also, the snark and quips. Can’t forget that Jacob’s an incorrigible sarcastic doofus
What can I say? Scott’s undying loyalty to his daughter matches Jacob’s undying loyalty for his sister perfectly
(We are all very lucky that Jacob wants to solve crimes because he would be way too good at doing crimes)
Seren Aisling Dwyn
Saoirse (Song of the Sea)
It wouldn’t have been right to make this list without including one of the characters that inspired Jacob and Seren in the first place and Seren fit Saoirse better than Jacob fit her brother, Ben
Song of the Sea is an Irish film about the two kids of a Selkie mother and a human father, who hides their heritage from them when their mother disappears (note: Jacob and Seren’s mom does not disappear). This hidden heritage causes Saoirse a lot of physical problems (i.e. rendering her mute, making her physically grow weaker the longer she’s apart from her seal’s coat), just like Seren’s hidden Siren heritage causes her to completely fail to address her additional needs that leads to a lot of unintentional illness in her Hogwarts years
Ben and Saoirse have to try and get back home so that Saoirse can sing the Song of the Sea and sent the Fair Folk home. That’s where I got the idea for Jacob and Seren to go wandering off alone as kids and encountering a bunch of magical creatures during their adventures from
Ben totally hated Saoirse until later in the movie, which inspired Jacob hating Seren after she’s born but warming up to her in a few months
Personality-wise, Saoirse may look sweet and quiet, but she’s a huge ball of sass. It’s just easy to miss because she only conveys it in her facial expressions, which is something that Seren’s always done, too
She also doesn’t follow their grandmother’s rules well. She’ll go along with things to a point, but the second she doesn’t agree she’ll strike off on her own and get it done by herself despite how tiny she is
(A lot of younger!Seren was inspired by Saoirse)
When given the opportunity to leave with the Faeries and her mother, she chooses to stay behind with her brother and father because she loves them, and while Seren isn’t fond of either of her parents, she would stay behind for Jacob
Yew Geneolgia (Bravely Second)
Okay... look, I promise that I didn’t just base Seren off of Yew because I made her before finishing Bravely Second but...
Playing Bravely Second was an experience after making Seren
So my boy Yew Geneolgia is the youngest member of a noble and prestigious house, was never expecting to inherit it because he had an older (half-)brother so he went to magic school and ended up being, like, the smartest student there, to the point where they had to give him a secret special ranking on the school ranking system because he was tooooo smart at magic (*cough* Seren singlehandedly winning the House Cup every year *cough*)
Of course their father doesn’t want to let Yew’s brother inherit anything because he’s not a pureblood noble (and the Dwyn siblings aren’t pureblood wizards). Yew’s brother disappears hunting down a sword in order to earn his way back into the family
Yew goes hunting the sword down to try and bring his brother home and surprise surprise it’s CURSED
(The Geneolgia siblings are not a perfect match to the Dwyn siblings but there are a LOT of similar elements there)
After his brother goes missing again after finding Yew with the cursed sword, Yew decides that he’s just going to try and be his older brother by taking up his place as a swordsman despite sucking at it. In Year 4, Seren decides that everyone just wants Jacob and not her, so she starts modeling herself after him more until she can’t keep it up anymore in late Year 5
So a small, young magic nerd who’s extremely awkward in social situations whose story revolves around a missing older brother that they attempt to emulate, unsuccessfully
Also, Yew is the one making all of the Bestiary entries. He’s clearly got an interest in Zoological stuff and he’s a very good artist since he does all of the illustrations in there, too
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (How to Train Your Dragon Series)
Hey speaking of Zoology did you know that Seren was into Magizoology and is very good at befriending creatures? It’s true!
Seren in her early years at Hogwarts is very similar to Hiccup from the first film. She’s shy, but undeniably witty and sarcastic. Her self-confidence is extremely low because she keeps getting compared to more successful family members. Her strengths come from her intelligence and being able to look at things from angles others might not, like extending empathy to creatures that most would hate
She’d never be able to hurt a dragon like Toothless come on. He’s too cute. Too sweet
As she gets older she still matches up with Hiccup, though. He finds himself being thrust into a leadership position and having to adjust, but doing so gracefully and with emotional maturity in much the same way that Seren steps up to lead the Cursed Vault crew when she needs to
You have to be pretty fearless to step up to a dragon that could bite your head off and then learn to fly on it, and when it comes down to it Seren is just as fearless in anything that is not a social interaction
I’m sorry, did I just hear SELF-SACRIFICIAL TENDENCIES? Why yes, yes I do believe that I did
And Hiccup will never, ever give up on Toothless no matter what. No matter what the dragon does (or is forced to do in the second film). Just like Seren will never give up on Jacob. No matter the cost
Ema Skye (Ace Attorney Series - Apollo Justice)
I know that Ema was in Spirit of Justice, too, but I don’t know anything about that one so I’m only covering her appearances chronologically up to Apollo Justice
I didn’t realize until watching someone’s blind playthrough of Apollo Justice recently just how much Seren was like Ema
So Ema starts off strong already as A Very Devoted Little Sister who absolutely refuses to believe that her older sister is guilty of a crime despite her sister confessing to it
(She ended up being right and her sister was blackmailed into covering it up which was honestly my default situation for the Dwyn siblings before the Portrait Vault chapter came out. Ema’s sister was being blackmailed with evidence that could implicate Ema with murder, Jacob would have been blackmailed with Seren’s safety. Which is still true, I suppose, but we’ll see how this holds up later)
She’s very passionate about forensic science in the same way that I imagine Seren can be in her own interests like Magizoology and later on the development of forensic magic
Almost a decade later, though, and Ema is... super jaded and grouchy. She’s sarcastic and kinda rude, but lights up again if you get her talking about her interests
She also doesn’t have her dream job but is instead... a detective. though Seren’s a lot more content as a detective than Ema is because she’s got Jacob and a license to do creature-related cases
But just the progression from the innocent kid to the jaded adult detective is... such a good match that I just had to put Ema in here
Katara (Avatar the Last Airbender)
And just like Jacob had Sokka, Seren gets Katara to round it off
There might be something to be said about the Southern Water Tribe siblings and the Dwyn Siblings both being linked to water as an element
I already covered a lot of this in Jacob’s section, but they have a similar dynamic
Katara is a Mom Friend extraordinaire who obsessively takes care of everyone in the group, even when it’s not her place to. A lot of them find it overbearing sometimes
While she’s generally fairly mature and level-headed, when she gets mad she gets absolutely furious and cannot be stopped until she’s satisfied
“You can’t knock me down!” is such an iconic line and very much embodies Seren’s stubbornness and determination to get back up and keep trying no matter what
She loves her brother. She’s not above criticizing him or the occasional jab, but she also knows when to give him credit for the incredibly smart things that he does. Nobody will defend him quite as hard as she will when she has to
The lovable, goofy, intelligent, protective older brother and the equally intelligent, mature, caring, stubborn younger sister. There’s no better way to describe the Dwyn Siblings than that

“i pour alcohol into the gaping hole inside my chest. it does not heal. not today. maybe tomorrow.”
MUNDUNGUS FLETCHER is 26 years old and works as a THIEF/DRUG DEALER/ALL ROUND CRIMINAL and is loyal to THE OOTP they were an RAVENCLAW and are a HALFBLOODED. HE look like FRANK DILLANE.
CHARACTER PARALLELS: nick miller ( new girl ), creed bratton ( the office ), doug judy ( b99 ), jason mendoza ( the good place ), chris miles ( skins ), jesper fahey ( six of crows ), scott lang ( marvel ), lillian ( unbreakable kimmy schmidt ). AESTHETIC: scuffed knees, flicking a lighter over and over again, flowery shirts, walking in the middle of the street after midnight, a body covered in bruises and tattoos, naming stray cats, falling asleep on the subway, watching smoke curl against a starless, black nightsky, throwing empty beer bottles against a wall. LINKS: stats. pinboard. character tag. HEADS UP: there’s quite a bit of talk about drugs and stuff in here -- as well as shitty parenting. i trigger warned it before every bullet point tho!
history
ciannán o’donnell was a flighty man, one of many relationships and flings and little loyalty, and so his affair with kiyana fletcher did not last long. when she told him he was pregnant, he moved on to a different woman, and kiyana had her son alone, with her sister on her side. dung was born to a lonely and angry woman, who had fallen for the charms and winks of a crooked criminal who spoke empty promises and lied for a living.
he grew up with his mum – a halfblooded witch and by far his favourite person in the world – in cork, attending muggle school there. he knew who his dad was, but wasn’t quite sure how to feel about —- EVERYONE knew who his dad was, a well known muggle criminal and dealer, a name notorious among the older kids at his school, a father to many. he’s like the robert baratheon of ireland, to be honest, planting bastards on every corner. lol. knowing he was one of his many kids was hard; he’d never met any of them, but he knew they were there, from his mother, from his aunt.
he met his dad for the first time at age seven, and was nothing but impressed. his dad showered him with gifts, his mum watching with a furious look on her face but biting her tongue. that moment was a switch for dung; he felt the need to impress his dad. he stole some sweets from a store on his way home from school a week later, fished some pennies out of the pockets of his classmates a few months later. when he phoned his dad to tell him, his laugh was warm and filled with life.
his relationship with his dad got better as his behaviour got worse. the thrill of stealing, of doing stuff he wasn’t supposed to, lit him not only on fire because ti was exciting, but also because he knew his dad would adore it. his mother’s worried questions and look only drove him to his dad, who liked it when he did bad things, who didn’t try and ground him ( looking back, he knows that that was stupid, but back then he was blindsided, obsessed with the mystery that was his dad ).
abuse tw // his father was abusive. period. he’s a wicked man, who has blood on his hands of people who were in his way, and he doesn’t love anything but winning and money and the high of victory. he manipulated mundungus, pushed him towards bad behaviours, showed him his bad sides when he was disappointed. most of the abuse was mental and verbal, but sometimes it turned physical as well. it’s toxic. mundungus hasn’t allowed himself to admit that to himself yet, though. end of tw //
drugs, smoking, alcohol tw // attending hogwarts was good, at first. it forced him to focus on other stuff, for a while, but his summers and winter breaks forced him back into his old behaviours. his world was split; at hogwarts, he was a loud and lively, but still a pretty good student, while at home he fell deeper and deeper in crossing lines and boundaries. he lit his first cigarette at age ten, drank his first beer at age twelve, smoked his first spliff when he turned fourteen, as a present from his dad. end of tws //
hogwarts also meant friends --- the dick squad was founded here, consisting out of dorcas, doc, daisy and dung himself. these three people meant everything to mundungus, to be honest, let him see the ways people could love each other without conditions or out of obligation. they were chaotic and messy and wrecked havoc on the castle but --- damn it, they’re his family, and he’d die for them.
drugs tw // it was in his later years that these two worlds started overlapping. his dad trusted him with a bit of produce, gave him some weed to sell at hogwarts after his christmas break in his fifth year, and it was a success. ever since, dung became pretty well known for selling a little bit of this and that. a lively spirit, he always did so with a bit of a grin, but he was also pretty fond of the stuff he sold, indulging quite a lot when business was a little slow.
he also stole a lot from rich purebloods, because fuck them
i guess ... this is where the messiness really did ... explode? mundungus liked the taste of drugs. he liked the taste of doing illegal things. he liked the taste of earning money and feeling powerful and he loved it all. he grew more dependent on alcohol and drugs. he wanted to flee, too. the world was a nasty fucking place and he knew that all too well and, fucking hell, don’t blame him for wanting to escape every now and then. end of tw //
he graduated at one point which? is a miracle? i think they just wanted to get rid of him tbh!!! but yeah, dung did Try a little at hogwarts, as he respects the hell out of dumbledore and stuff, but he was still not a good student. after graduation, he kind of joined up with his dad and started doing some illegal stuff in the wizarding world too, because why the hell not? he was good at it.
dung had no plans to join either side of the war, tbh, even though he’ss v much against the de’s cause. he’s a self serving kid!! but then he kind of got in a nasty situation where both alastor and dumbledore got him out of trouble ( that might have sent him to fucking azkaban, what a fucking idiot ) and well, dung might be a shithead, but he felt indebted to them and kind of rolled into the order.
and well --- the order was a newfound family. messy, of course, and full of chaos and distrust, but --- heck, mundungus found a lot of people there that he did end up feeling loyal to. and while that was scary, as mundungus prefers being a lone wolf ( or raccoon ), it was a kind of wonderful, too?
and -- get this -- he was an asset. his ties to the criminal world, with his ability to steal and sneak around like less than a shadow. he was useful, and mundungus fletcher had never been useful in his life before. what a weird feeling that was --- oh boy, but it was good, too. mundungus likes it. he could build on that and improve greatly and he has fucking potential to become a better person. he really wants to, too, because he feels incredibly indebted to alastor and dumbledore akjfsdf.
dont hold your breath, tho, he’s probably not going to improve a lot
mundungus doesn’t technically have a home. his mother’s place is his home, i guess, but he’s not there a lot. he crashes on couches, breaks into muggle homes of people who are on vacation ( always leaving it the way it was, but with a bit of a smell ) or in a squatter’s home, which he thinks is an iconic scene.
drugs tw // besides his work for the order, mundungus does a bit of this and that. he still works for his dad a little, dealing some drugs for him, but he’s mostly focused on making his way through the wizarding world’s underground and making a name for himself there. he sees no reason to try and find another career, finds the things he does now thrilling and exciting and honestly, he doesn’t have much of a way out.
abuse tw // his dad has a hold on him. sure, he can drop his criminal activities in the wizarding world, but when it comes to his dad's business, he’s stuck. his father isn’t going to allow him to walk away –  that much should be obvious. he knows too much. and then there’s mundungus’ wish to always please his father, and his father’s endless dissatisfaction. it’s messy and bad and toxic and we all hate mundungus’ dad. end of tws //
addiction tw // what it all boils down to is that mundungus is chaotic. he never stays in one place too long, doesn’t have a consistent job, strays away from commitment and stability. he’s addicted, to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and adrenaline. he’s self serving, in the end. he’s seeking for validation, deep down, and endlessly scared of all that’s happening around him. he’s alone, dreadfully so, but that’s the way he prefers it. end of tw //
personality & tidbits
mundungus is a lowkey tortured artist. he writes awful poetry and draws a lot and he loves painting if he has time. he’s in love with the beat generation, mostly. he’s very private about this kind of stuff, though. it's his thing, and his alone. some of his tattoos he’s designed himself tho!! and we love and stan!!
his stance in the war is something that’s … pretty unknown, i imagine. mundungus benefits from appearing neutral, has connections in both the pureblood and muggle world. he likes to come across as that shady dude who will do whatever you ask of him for the right price.
can usually be spotted wearing The Coat, a rly expensive, vintage long coat that he once stole of a pureblood. he’s enlarged the pockets with some handy spellwork and pretty much carries everything he owes in there, like his produce and his money and his second pair of shoes and his art supplies and probably some random trash.
is a bit smelly, so give him a shower
most likely to show up at your doorstep at 5am with some flowers and a shit eating grin, saying “can i sleep on yer couch?”
mundungus LOVES animals but doesn’t have any because of his lack of a home. his mother has a dog, though, and he loves that dog. he also feels v connected to stray dogs and cats and can be found petting and feeding them a lot.
hates himself deeply, doesn’t think he’s worth anyone’s time (despite constantly demanding it), has a low opinion of himself. he doesn’t get it if people care about him, to be honest? the only person he can properly accept it of is his mother, but even that’s complicated.
plots!
CUSTOMERS // a simple, easy connection! basically someone who buys drugs (also does like medicinal stuff? but also drugs-drugs) of mundungus or has paid him (good money) to nick something for them. he’s pretty down to do most things as long as it’s for the right price!
PARTY FRIENDS // dung likes getting wasted / high / fucked up and having a good ol’ time with people. sure, he’s done it alone, but he prefers doing it with others. there’s a lot of room for diff options here?
YOU SAVED ME ONCE // ( alcohol tw ) a plot where someone got dung to a hospital when he got alcohol poisoning and basically saved his life?? meaning?? mundungus feels indebted and he hates that but!! he’s gonna pay your char back! he promises!
UNDER PRESSURE // i imagine that dung has some ties to de’s as well bc of his less than legal work so? maybe some death eater could try and put some pressure on him? get him to do some dirty job bc it’d not matter if he died … etc etc
UNDER PRESSURE 2.0 // on the other hand, i bet some order members are like 👀 at dung? this one’d be for order members who’re like … making sure that dung is still loyal and here?? making him feel a bit?? queasy??
ONE NIGHT STANDS // dung isnt rly good at romance but he’s good at no strings attached sex. this’d work in a lot of ways and w a lot of characters so imma keep this p open! dung is bi btw!!
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY // your average angsty exes plot? mundungus is flighty, and while he does feel feelings for people, he’s not … good with commitment. this’d be a relationship that he broke off bc he got scared or ?? something else??
COUCHES // i need some couches that mundungus can crash on adkjfhsdf he needs a place ... to sleep. he will pay you back with drugs or ... stolen goods? money? something that he didnt acquire lawfully

Without further ado,
Then Again Part 22:
(Words: 1,740)
The gift shop is the smallest part of the hotel and it’s still the size of three classrooms smushed together. It’s stacked with trinkets, magnets, mugs, glass miniatures, and all the other usual sort of souvenirs that glitter back at the sunlight peeking through the windows. Near the front of the store, it smells like a grandmother’s laundry room... likely because the air conditioning is blowing right in my face, making my eyelids click when I blink.
I should get off my phone and go look around, rather than wait for the texting bubbles to pop up again. Oops.
Phone in my pocket, I take a moment to locate everyone. The team is dispersed throughout the aisles. Given how maze-ish the place is, it looks like everybody is in the middle of some slow-motion strategy game, related to either war or hunting.
On one side, near the stuffed donkeys and elephants, Cindy and Sally are flipping through postcards and travel guides. From here, I can’t hear what they’re whispering, but Cindy keeps glancing at Abe.
Abe is totally immersed in the stuffed animals a few feet away. He’s on FaceTime with his dad, holding up various stuffed animals, asking which his sister would like best or if she’s too young to align herself to a political party yet. His dad is laughing and shaking his head while Abe settles on, “I’ll get her the teddy bear with the top hat-- I think it looks pretty politically neutral.” After reminding his dad not to tell anyone about the gifts he’s getting the rest of their family, Abe says goodbye and walks over to show Cindy and Sally the stuffed bear.
MJ is in the middle of the shop. She must be in a hurry, since she buys a Notorious RBG sweatshirt, rips the plastic bit of the tag off with her teeth, and practically shoves herself into it headfirst within 50 seconds. Either she’s gone from mildly annoyed to seriously pissed or she’s wanted the meme-ed out Supreme Court Justice’s face on her clothing for a long time. Knowing MJ, it could totally be either option.
Flash is being an idiot, sulking in the corner. He’s leaning against an advertisement for some new wolf documentary stuck to the window, but his eyes are flickering back and forth from whatever app he’s scrolling through on his phone to Peter talking with Y/N, standing a couple rows up. Maybe he senses me noticing him because he glances suddenly in my direction. We make awkward eye contact before he stiffens and looks away.
He was probably eavesdropping on the two of them. But I don’t have the energy to confront him about it. Not after yesterday and this morning. Instead, I shift my focus to my friends. Peter, mostly.
Oh God, Peter. I can already tell he’s about to be at his utmost annoying the moment we get back to our room. (After we switch the rooms back to normal, at least.)
Standing beside her, he tries to juggle a bunch of keychains for no apparent reason, nearly knocking the shelf over when he fails; Y/N gives him a pitying laugh as she takes them from his hand and organizes them on the shelf where they belong. Her eyes stay on the small task, but Peter’s are practically glued to her face. I think he’s forgotten whatever conversation they were having because there’s a short pause and then the second she turns her head to ask him something, Peter does an odd hop thing like he’s been mildly shocked. Y/N tilts her head, squinting for a moment before moving on to the next overpriced item on the shelf. After a few seconds of finally paying attention, he follows her further down the row.
And I’m standing next to stacks of coffee mugs. I should probably rescue Peter now before he makes a fool of himself. Or a bigger one, I should say.
I pass Flash -- well, sort of, since he’s three rows away -- as I walk toward them. He ignores me like usual, so I ignore him too.
Neither Peter or Y/N notice me approach; they’re lightly arguing. She’s shaking her head and groaning in discontent. It seems playful, but there’s a real hesitance to whatever she’s resisting. Peter sounds like he’s trying to tone down his own grin and failing miserably.
“Nope, no way out of it. You have to choose,” Peter says, half smirking. “Necklace or bracelet?”
She shakes her head again, at a slight loss for words.
“What, so I can feel handcuffed to you? Those necklaces are practically chokers, they’re so short.”
Whatever they’re talking about, it’s definitely the perfect spot for me to jump in.
“Handcuffs and chokers?” I ask, mock shocked. “Kinky.”
They both turn at the same time. Y/N’s face lights up when she sees me. Her cheeks are a bit pink but there’s no doubt she knows I’m joking. Behind her, Peter gives me a Why are you always like this? exasperated look with a somewhat darker blush.
“Ned!” she says. “Christ, you scared me.”
“Too engrossed in handcuffs?”
There’s a grin on my face now and she returns a tired, close mouthed smile. It’s only at this point that I realize how exhausted she looks. The darkness under her eyes combined with her tense posture seems to cloak her whole body with a faintly haunted, paranoid even, halo.
Nonetheless, she seems tempted to laugh and hit me. Instead rolls her eyes and takes a step to the side.
“Peter, show Ned what you wanted to buy.”
Peter opens his hands. One has a short necklace, the other a bracelet. Both are fake gold and have half hearts with something written on each. It might be best friends?
Dear God. Way to be subtle, Peter, you idiot.
“Y/N and I agreed we need to work on our friendship,” he explains hesitantly, as if he’s just now realizing how fumblingly obvious he’s being. “So, friendship… stuff…?” He almost cringes at his own words.
Don’t laugh, Ned, I tell myself. Don’t you dare do it.
Before I can comment, MJ’s voice cuts in from the back of the shop and we all turn.
She’s standing in front of Flash, near the door, in a stance that suggests she wants to push him out of her way, or down to the ground. Man, he must be desperate or stupid to attempt to talk to her right now.
“Whatever it is, go tell her yourself!” she half shouts, hands reaching up to her hair. “Leave me out of it, I don’t care!”
MJ shoulders past him, not enough to knock him over, but certainly enough to leave him jostled and lost. His back rises and falls like he’s taking deep breaths. He turns to look directly at Y/N, expression somewhere between frustration and… sadness? That can’t be right.
As I try to riddle out whatever’s going on, replay the reasons why MJ would be this mad at him and what it has to do with Y/N, I hear Y/N make an almost silent strangled sound beside me. Knowing there’s no way to stop her from whatever she’s about to do, I shut my eyes and curse Flash for being born.
When I open them, I see that MJ has planted herself in a hotel lobby chair outside the shop with her hood pulled up, arms and legs crossed, sunk deep into the soft leather. Mr. Harrington, sitting in the seat adjacent, moves to ask her a question but she yanks the strings of the hoodie and it closes around her face like an annoyed collapsing black hole.
Y/N takes a quiet breath and Peter tenses on my right. Before he can open his mouth, Y/N says she’ll be right back with a tone that explains nothing and warns us both not to intervene.
I look at Peter, who looks at me, and we both watch her approach Flash. If I know Peter at all, I’m sure his feet are itching to race over to them too.
With her back to us, we can’t see her expression or hear anything she says. All we can do is catch glimpses of Flash, who keeps trying to interrupt her and losing. After about forty seconds they start to argue, or at least that’s what I’d guess from the angry gestures.
When she starts to leave, Flash grabs her hand. A red flag goes up in my head. That’s an idiotic move. Y/N smacks it off with the back of her other hand and leaves him struggling to say… something. I’m bad at reading lips.
Kinda looks like, Keanu just loves truly. Reeves? But I’m 98% certain that’s wrong.
Well, all the same, that clarifies nothing.
As she quickly starts walking back over to me and Peter, I turn my head to ask what he thinks just happened, but he isn’t there. Well, he is, he’s just further down the aisle, where he nearly knocked everything down a few minutes ago. He grabs something and heads toward the cash register without a word.
“He’s not buying those bracelets, is he?” Y/N asks, slightly out of breath. Standing beside me, we both watch him set something small down on the counter.
“I don’t think so,” I say.
Really, I have no idea. I couldn’t see what he took, but I’d like to offer her some comfort in whichever ways are currently available.
She bites at a nail.
“Good.” I realize she isn’t meeting my eyes. “It would’ve been… awkward, if he had gotten a pair for the two of us and not you and MJ, right?”
Awkward?
I pause.
Until now, I hadn’t really considered what might happen if Y/N doesn’t like Peter back. I mean, I have reasons to think she does, but I didn’t exactly notice those reasons until I began to look for them. Oh shit, what if she doesn’t?
Still, “awkward” doesn’t have to mean anything significant, right?
I hope not.
“Plus,” she continues, biting her lip for a split second as she watches Peter, “I really don’t want to give Flash any new material to bully him with, you know? Middle school friendship bracelets would be more than enough.”
I nod as Peter finishes his purchase. He turns around, smiling at us, lifting a small plastic shopping bag like a greeting.
Man, I hope this is the end of the mess and not the beginning.

Pen Flipper Extraordinaire
Ao3 Mirror
Tim flips a pen between his fingers. He learned it as a trick from Ives to quote, “Impress the ladies, Tim.” He never got around to actually showing Steph (their dating was comprised heavily of fighting against hordes of grunts who were not going to stop attacking because he had a cool pen trick to show his girlfriend). Considering Tam was still ultra pissed at him for faking her dad’s death, he didn’t have anyone to show it to. Showing it off to Steph would be pretty lame now, but Cass might get a laugh out of it...
“Mr. Wayne,” Lex Luthor intones, “if you’d deign to pay attention to the dealing concerning millions of dollars.”
“I am, Mr. Luthor,” he smiles the fakest smile he’d ever smiled. It was a shame his pen trick was wasted on this stale boring meeting with a stale boring man.
Luthor sniffs like his teacher Mr. Owens who always assumed he wasn’t listening and he didn’t understand what he was doing. Mr. Owens was overbearing and self righteous man; Tim listened enough and he understood enough to get an A in the class despite the U for Unsatisfactory on his report card. Eat your heart out, Mr. Owens. Look at him, now; he was an unhappy seventeen year old dropout at a confidential meeting with the only person in the world who hates Superman’s guts. A meeting he only half understands because Bruce didn’t teach him how to be a CEO for all the training he jammed into 6 months. It is a small mercy he fully understands all the blatant attempts at manipulation from Luthor because you didn’t become a Bat without being soaked in manipulation, intentional or not.
“Timothy,” Luthor said, as if he was repeating himself.
“Yes, Alexander, I heard you the first time.” He didn’t, but Luthor could stuff it. “I thought you might be following up with a point of some kind.”
Luthor purses his lips. “Yes, of course,” he says with palpable hate. “It would be a revolution in water filtration; something that Gotham desperately needs in the wake of all the hoodlums attacking her. Gases and toxins of all sort poisoning children and loved ones.”
Ha, like the poisons are going to do anything to anybody. Local Gothamites are practically immune at this point. Anyways, Waynetech already had a filtration system. Of course, Luthor lives in Metropolis. As a rule, Metropolitans knew zero things about Gotham.
“It’s impressive technology,” Tim says because he could admit it is good tech and he is a sociable host. “The bluetooth release of purification chemicals is amazing, really. Everything’s got to be connected to the Internet these days. Otherwise, how would we function as a society. We’ll buy it.”
Luthor’s eyes sharpen. “If you were listening, Tim-”
Tim arches an eyebrow so hard that it might go flying off of his face. What was it with supervillains and his first name. There are boundaries.
“-Mr. Wayne,” Luthor continues wisely, “you would know this product is not for sale. It is merely Lexcorp’s magnanimous offer to Wayne Tech to distribute and install this, as you said, impressive technology throughout this needy city.”
Yeah, sure, he was going to allow Luthor Corps to install anything in Gotham, especially a water filter paired with timed substance release using wireless controls. Tim’s ninety-nine percent sure this is a deal Wayne Tech has already refused and Luthor is trying to push it forward through the weak link, him. (Tim is offended. Look, he hasn’t taken any business classes but he’s heard enough plans about poisoning cities to know how they work.)
“The city will be incredibly thankful for your contribution; an invaluable image booster for a young, up and coming CEO as yourself.” Ha, young. He looked in the mirror this morning and he had a gray hair. Soon, he’ll be rocking the Jason Todd look. “In addition, it would be a wonderful bridge between our megacorporations.”
“A step,” Luthor says, “your father never took.”
The pen clatters to the table as Tim’s open grin becomes two upturned lips pressing together. Recovering, he snatches the pen back from the table in a too tight fist. He teeters the pen at a slower pace across his knuckles.
“Yeah, well, you know Wayne Senior,” Tim chuckles. “Business wasn’t-” Should that be isn’t? Bruce is alive, after all.“-isn’t his preferred sport.” “He likes polo.” He’s never actually seen Bruce play polo but it’s Brucie’s go to hobby. A stereotypical hobby for the Gotham elite. It wasn’t really his dad’s thing, though. He was more of a football man. Not that it was relevant to the very important conversation he was having about the fate of Gotham’s water supply. Get your head in the game, Drake. Tim exhales through his nose and gets the rhythm back in his pen flipping. “Anyhow, I know he wasn’t much of a step taker in the business world.”
“An understatement,” Luthor says with a rueful smile. “Will you be different?”
Tim cobbles together businessman-ese in his head. “Although your offer is incredibly generous, you do understand my hesitance in letting a… strong company, like your own, control infrastructure like water filtration. This is a Wayne city.”
Luthor gives Tim a onceover with a raise of his eyebrows. He snorts and inclines his head. Of course, it would be territoriality that garnered him respect from this guy. The scrutiny reminds him uncomfortably of Ra’s. “It is understandable. What if we do a test run on a portion of Gotham?”
“Hmmmm,” Tim says, “we here at Wayne Enterprises, at Gotham, would be grateful to have your technology. You are correct; the quality of water here is less than pristine.”
Luthor’s eyes glimmer. “However, as they say, give a man a fish, feed him for a day, but teach a man how to fish and he will never be hungry again.” Luthor’s smile dropped considerably. “Would you be amicable to collaborating with Waynetech in developing this project before implementing it? We can offer considerable funding and an extensive infrastructure R&D. We know Gotham.” Either Luthor backs off or he lets Tim in on his little ‘poison all Gothamites’ project.
Luthor’s eyes, which apparently are the windows to his soul or the mood ring to his heart because they broadcast his every emotion, turn cold and his nose wrinkles in distaste. The silence extends broken only by the faint sound of his pen moving across his hand.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Wayne, our labs and our technology are notoriously private. I’m afraid Lexcorp refuses and given your trepidation at this moment, has removed the offer for your convenience.” Awww, Luthor doesn’t like to share. The ‘at this moment’ was suspicious. Tim bets a hundred bucks that a mysterious poison finds itself in Gotham pipelines next month.
“Thank you for arranging this meeting, Mr. Luthor. It was a pleasure seeing you again.” It really wasn’t. Tim couldn’t even tell Kon about this meeting without violating a thousand NDA’s. Luthor’s nostrils recoil in defense as Tim puts down his pen and extends his hand. Apparently, he is allergic to niceties, even to fellow CEOs. Given that he hates Superman and the thing Conner has said about him curing his sister of a chronic disease and then making her sick again, Tim is not surprised.
After Luthor gets over himself and smoothes his face into condescending placidity, they have a nice, firm business handshake. Luthor’s hand is average for a civilian: a few light calluses, warm, and dry. It’s funny for how for all the limitations humanity has, the terrible person capacity doesn’t seem to have a cap; he tucks his sardonic smirk at the thought into a cordial smile. “Have a nice afternoon, Mr. Luthor.” “You as well, Wayne,” Luthor replies because he has to get the last word.
Mercy, ever the silent bodyguard, walks Luthor out. Tim watches Luthor get into his car and be chauffeured off back to Metropolis through the clear glass of the skyscraper wall. He collapses into his spinny, cushioned CEO chair and sighs. Business sucks.

BNHA self insert AU [Book 4]
Foo I dunno what to put here anymore... read here, then here and then here!
Chapter 1: Midsummer Madness by Joji
It’s a fine summer morning, and it was quiet in the Iida household....until the sound of dramatic groaning rose from the girl’s room. Which was routine for Hanaka Rosa, youngest twin and sister of the siblings. She was not a morning person and sure as hell wasn’t going to wake up early on summer vacation! And just down the hall, rose older twin Tensei Oro to greet the day. Hanaka and Tensei couldn’t be anymore different from each other! Gender aside, these twins were like night and day in personalities and intellect. There was never a quiet and normal day with them in the mix, which always starts with Tensei waking up his twin sister.
“Wake up Rosa!” yelled Tensei from outside her bedroom door.
Hanaka groaned “Why?! It’s summer vacation!”
“Are you forgetting what today is?!” Tensei said before teleporting inside “Pendeja, it’s the school carnival!”
“Huh? School carnival?” Hanaka sat up and rubbed her eyes “It’s not Saturday yet.”
Tensei arm chopped at the calendar on the wall “Well maybe if you actually slashed the days, you’d remember!”
“Why do I even need that thing! I have a phone that checks the time and day for me” Hanaka huffed “Get with the times bro!”
“Okay then, check your phone right now” Tensei crossed his arms.
Hanaka grumbled as she picked up her phone and her eyes bulged out of her eyes “Oh FUCK! It’s Saturday!” She jumps out of bed “FUCK WE’RE GONNA BE LATE!”
“Hurry up because I am not waiting for you” Tensei opened the door to leave “I’m going to have my café in peace.”
Tensei slides down the stair railing to the waiting breakfast on the nook.
“Good morning mijo” greeted their mother “What were you scolding your sister on this time?”
Tensei hopped on his usual seat “I have a concert today at the school carnival and Hanaka volunteered to do a food booth with her friends. And of course she forgot and is now getting dressed.”
“I’ll take you both, no need to rush your sister” Their dad responded as he served his plate of breakfast.
“You spoil her too much dad” scolded Tensei “How is she ever going to do things for herself?! She needs to learn some responsibility.”
“Oooo he got you there Tenya” agreed mom “I think she should uphold some responsibility, when I was her age, I was always on top of my duties.”
“But you were middle class in public school, Hanaka doesn’t have to fist fight 3 people to get to her first class!” arm chopped Dad “I’m taking the kids to the carnival and that’s final!”
Mom rolled her eyes and brought her cup to her lips “Whatever you say dear, it’s not like we had two older children that are independent or anything.”
Tensei tried really hard to stifle his laughter as their Mom, once again, threw major shade at Dad. It’s just any other morning here in the Iida household.
“OKAY I’M READY!” Hanaka yelled from the base of the stairs, fists in the air.
“Come and have some coffee at least” Dad offered.
“No time for café dad” huffed Hanaka “I gotta go! They called me to hurry up because the barbecue pits aren’t lighting strong enough!” she bounced and pulled her twin by the arm “Cmon cmon cmon! Teleport us there!”
“We are not teleporting Rosa!” scolded Tensei “I’m taking my bike, you should’ve figured this out when you signed up to volunteer.”
“But Tensei!” whined Hanaka “it far! And I can’t run that fast without getting tired! Please, pretty please, teleport me?”
“No, and stop batting your eyes like that” her twin said in disgust “You look like Donkey from Shrek 2.”
“You take that back!” Hanaka got offensive “You look like pretzel stick!”
“Short!”
“Wannabe!”
“Stop your fighting! I’m taking you both right this instant” Dad said sternly “I want you both in the car in one minute, no talking.”
“Yes father” said the twins in defeat before making their way to the driveway.
Mom chuckled “Ya know, I thought having twins would make them best friends. Turns out if they’re half latina, they have a built in hatred for each other.”
“I thought they’d get along better now that they’re older” Dad sighed and grabbed his keys “When will it end.”
It was silence and scowls from the twins in the backseat...also a normal thing now that Lili and Iwata don’t live in the house. Iwata is going into his second year of high school at UA, so he visits when he can. Lili is also in her second year at dance academy in France, she visits during Christmas time. Leaving the twins in their 1st year of middle school, everyone’s favorite school years! Tensei is one of the smartest kids in school with promise of being a lawyer due to his amazing debating skills. He’s also known for his musical talent along with his little band that sometimes plays some backyard gigs. So today’s their biggest gig at this school carnival, Tensei had to pull a few strings to get their band in, but it’s all about to pay off.
Once they got dropped off, the twins sped off to their places. Hanaka was weaving her way around some of her fellow student volunteers to get to the food stalls. She’s notorious for having a bad attitude and being short tempered, but she’s not alone! Her two best friends are the same way and band together to aid each other in school fights. The three of them are known as the ‘Squak’ and you don’t want to get on their bad side!
“Hanaka! Don’t tell me you forgot today we’re on grilling duty” cawed Petti as she fanned the dying fire “We need some serious fire power if we’re gonna be here all day.”
“Sorry! I didn’t set my alarm” Hanaka panted as she walked into the booth “Where’s Kyanka?”
“Here!” cried out their other friend, their paw hand in the air “No more coals or wood to burn, nya.”
“Oh shit, alright then ladies” Hanaka rolled up her sleeves and did a little stretch “stand back, I’m about to crank up the heat!” She sticks her arm in the glowing coals and ignites her hand to coax the coals to raise a steady flame “We got fire, time to get cooking!”
“Tensei! We were starting to get worried you were a no show” gasped their friend Tetsu “You’re usually the first one to gigs.”
“Sorry to make you wait” sighed Tensei as he put his guitar case down “My twin got her way again and I had to wait for her.”
“Geez, we aren’t children anymore” responded Ashido “Hana-chan is still having tantrums?!”
“Tch, be thankful he didn’t show up scorched again” said Huei as he rolled his eyes “Anyways, sensei wanted to see you. They’re at the soundboard.”
The carnival went without a hitch thankfully. Everyone liked Tensei’s little band that they’re invited to more school events. His band doesn’t have any particular sound, they just cover some alternative songs and pop radio stuff. To be honest, if Tensei didnt look so plain and clean-cut, he’d be the handsome frontman and popularize his band.
“How was the carnival kids?” asked the twin’s mother as the two staggered their way in the house.
“Wack” said Hanaka, on the verge of crying “I didn’t get a chance to eat my free food!”
“I had fun, the boys and I are going to be doing more school events!” Tensei responded with a big, dumb smile “I’m just so excited for the upcoming school term!”
“Wait- school term?” Hanaka muttered under her breath as she counted on her fingers “aww man! Schools starts on Monday huh?!”
“Better get your summer homework done Hanaka” warned their mother.
Hanaka huffed “How come you never tell Tensei to do his homework!”
“Tensei is on the honor roll at school” their mother crossed her arms “Far as I know, he probably finished it 3 days after break started. So you best wash up and crack those books open.”
-Fast forward, beginning of second year-
“Where’s Tensei?” asked Petti as she sat in the back corner desk of homeroom.
“Where he belongs” Hanaka propped her legs up on the desk “In the honors class.”
“Owo does that mean no more scolding?” Kyanka perked up her tail.
“Yup, no more nagging nor teacher’s pet Tensei to bug us” Hanaka leaned back on her chair “We’re sensei’s problem now!”
Petti slams a small bag on her desk “CAW! Time to put on makeup in class!”
The girls quickly do their goth eyeliner in their little corner of the classroom. These three have been friends since they were in pre-school, Petti and Hanaka go back farther to their infant days. Petti is Tokoyami’s daughter, full name Peregine Tokoyami. Kyanka is Ojiro’s daughter, in fact, his only daughter as they have two older sons.
“Class, please take your seats” the teacher announces “Welcome to your 2nd year, I’m sure you all had the same homeroom as last year and know each other. But we have a new student this year” they motioned for the person at the door to come in “I’d like you be nice to your new classmate. Would you like to introduce yourself?”
“Hi, my name is Lumi Aoyama” said the girl “and I’m from France, and no, I will not say anything in french for you.”
“Oh that’s...lovely!” the teacher was trying really hard to say something positive “why don’t you take the seat over there in the back?”
The three girls eye the new girl as she briskly walked to the seat next to Petti. She takes notice and gives Petti the side eye.
“You wanna fight?” the new girl spat with hostile energy.
“Excuse me?” responded Petti, matching energy.
“Hi, I’m Hanaka” intervened the Iida twin “I like your highlight, what brand is that?”
The new girl darted her eyes onto Hanaka “I’m not wearing makeup, it’s my skin.”
“Nya, it hurts my eyes” said Kyanka, squinting to see.
“Humph! Then look away cat girl!” the girl said in a stuck up manner “before I fight you too.”
“Hey, you don’t talk to my friends like that” Petti got defensive “If you wanna fight, then we gonna fight.”
“Oh yeah? Then it’s you and me, after school at the sports shed.”
“You’re on new girl!” growled Petti.
The rest of the day was full of tense glares from the two girls. Hanaka and Kyanka not doing much but watch and wait. The final bell rings and the new girl dashes ahead.
“Petti you aren’t going to fight her are you?” asked Hanaka “Let’s patch things up and be friends with her, it’s the first day!”
“I’m gonna fight! I don’t care if it’s the first day” Petti defended herself “She was being rude to you two and I don’t like bitches that think they can talk down to my friends!” She turns to Kyanka “You record it, I want this bitch to know not to mess with me!”
Begrudgingly, Hanaka made her way to the sports shed to watch this fight. Might as well right? It’s not like her twin knows where she is...wonder what he’s up to.
“Iida-kun, may I speak with you?”
“Yes coach?” responded Tensei before leaving the classroom “is there something the matter?”
“Nothing is wrong, I just wanted to ask you if you’re doing debate this year”
“I am, I had such a good season last year that I want to do it again” Tensei beamed “I’m thinking about getting onto the Junior Varsity team.”
“Oh! That’s great because I was going to ask if you wanted to move up to JV” the teacher said in relief “One of our JV debaters graduated and we’re short a member. Plus with all the amazing work you’ve put in last year, how would you like to go to Nationals in the spring?”
Tensei’s eyes widened and jaw dropped “I’d be honored to! I won’t let my team down coach!”
The teacher opens a manila folder “Perfect! I’m going to send you home with the paperwork for your parents to overlook and sign. Bring it back to me by Friday.”
Tensei could hardly contain his excitement as he gleefully skipped down the empty school hall. He couldn’t wait to tell his parents, because his twin doesn’t care about his ‘silly little hobbies’ as she puts it. No matter, he’s happy and nothing can ruin this for him...until he got outside and saw his twin and her friends in a fight.
“STOP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Tensei dashed to break up the fight “Are you three crazy?! It’s the first day!”
“Fuck off Tensei this is my fight!” yelled Petti as the male twin blocked her target.
“You leave me no choice but to go get an adult.” Tensei said sternly.
“Whatever Tensei, you’re ruining the shot nya” Kyanka said out of annoyance.
“Yeah Tensei, go kiss ass to the principal why don’t you?!” spat his twin.
“What is going on here?!” said a loud voice behind them “A fight on the first day?! Everyone in my office NOW!”
All five of them where in the principal’s office, awaiting for their parents to come. Which is something the three girls were used to, but Tensei was very stiff and nervous to what his mom is going to think.
“I’m here, what happened?” bust in the twin’s mother “I got here as fast as I could.”
“Mrs Iida, good to see you again” greeted the principal “We’re awaiting the other parents.”
“I’m here on the behalf of Mr Tokoyami and Mr Ojiro as well” the mother explained “They’re both on duty.”
“Of course they are” said Petti and Kyanka in unison.
“Hey, you know they work hard for you” the mother snapped “I would appreciate it if you showed a little understanding that they’re doing important things right now.”
“Sorry Mrs Iida” they apologized.
The mother sighed as she took a seat “On the first day? What prompted it this time?!”
“I suggested to not fight for the record” Hanaka spoke up “And Tensei ran in to break up the fight.”
Tensei nodded vigorously “That’s right, I didn’t want the girls to get in trouble on the first day.”
“The new girl challenged me and insulted my friends” Petti explained “I was willing to be friendly but she just started to be rude to us!”
“That’s not true! You’re just saying that” out-bursted the new girl “You guys were staring at me and made comments about my skin. IT’S MY QUIRK YOU ASSHOLES!”
“Young lady watch your language!” demanded the principal “It seems like you were off to a rough first day. I know you didn’t have much time to settle in the area, so we’ll wait for your father to come and talk things out.”
“Ugh he doesn’t care enough about me to come” grumbled the new girl, arms crossed “He’s probably looking at himself in the mirror and forgot.”
A few minutes passed and a man ran in the room.
“Bambina! On the first day?!” cried out the man “You promised.”
“Wait hol up- Aoyama?” stood up the mother “No way! You’re back?!”
“Mrs CEO herself?!” responded the man “Your kids attend this school?”
“Yes, mine are the mini Tenya and the curly haired one” she gestured “And those two are Tokoyami’s and Ojiro’s, don’t they look so much like their fathers?”
“Nya I don’t look like my daddy” huffed Kyanka, tail standing up at attention.
“How do you know each other?” asked the new girl.
“I went to UA with her, her husband and their fathers” Aoyama put his hand on the twin’s mother shoulder “She’s saved my hide a few times in those days and I went to her wedding. It’s been so long my friend, and may I say, you look so good for being a mother of 4!”
“Oh stop!” the mother put her hands on her cheeks “You flatter me too much! And you’re still very shining.”
The kids were looking at the display in shock. Never have they seen a reunion in such an unlikely situation.
“Ahem, if you don’t mind Mrs Iida and Mr Aoyama.”
“Oh right, of course!” the mother cleared her throat and sat down “What are the disciplinary actions? Since it’s so early in the school year.”
The principal folded his hands “We have clean up duties for a month or have them go with the district behavioral specialist for evaluating.”
“Now just wait a moment, a behavioral specialist?” the mother spoke up “They got into a fight after school, you send students to a behavioral specialist if they show signs of a sociopath. And this isn’t sociopathic, clearly the lack of parental guidance and teenage angst.” she shot at look at the girls “I believe the month long clean up duty will suffice.”
“I take full responsibility!” Petti spoke up “Hanaka and Kyanka didn’t do anything wrong, it was all my idea.”
“I will admit that I challenged her to fight me” said the new girl with guilt.
The principal looked perplexed “That’s a first. Owning up to your mistakes?” they gathered themselves quickly “Then it’s settled, Miss Tokoyami and Miss Aoyama will be serving a month of cleaning duties starting tomorrow.”
Everyone left to their respectful households after that. Hanaka felt the change in the air and it kind of scared her. What the hell is going to happen now?
-Two weeks later, after-school-
“Nya! It’s finally Friday” cried Kyanka out as she stretched out her paws “My stinky brothers aren’t home if you guys wanna come over.”
“Sounds like fun” groaned the new girl.
Hanaka cringed “Right, cleaning duties punishment! Sorry.”
“Man, I wanted to get a new choker today at the mall” sighed Petti “And my dumb dad wants me home by 6 until my punishment is up. Not like he’s gonna be home to uphold me to that.”
The two girls got up to leave “Well, hope things go by quickly!” waved Hanaka “Bye Petti, Aoyama-san.”
The two punished girls went on to do their sweeping.
“Hey, you’ve been here your whole life” new girl broke the silence “How is like living in Japan? What is there to do?”
Petti stopped sweeping to answer “Hmmm, I guess it’s fine? There’s lots of shopping and hang out spots in this area. And the beach this a short commute from here.”
“The beach!? I’ve never been to a beach!” new girl beamed “It’s is fun?”
For the first time since the first day, Petti and the new girl had a long conversation. Anything was better than cleaning in silence.
“Hey, what do you like to be called by?” asked Petti as they walked to the front of the school.
“Oh, I guess my first name?” new girl paused to think “I don’t like my name though, I was named after my grandma.”
“I don’t like my name either, my dumb dad named me Peregrine because of my feather pattern” Petti pointed at her face “I hated being a bird of prey, so I gave myself the name Petti. Because I’m petty as hell and it’s kind of my quirk.”
“That’s so cool! Lumi is short for luminescent” she giggled “Then I guess you can call me....Twinkle. Because of how I shine.”
“That’s a cute name, I like it” Petti stopped at the front gate “Well Twinkle, I’m going this way. See you Monday!”
“Bye!” Twinkle waved Petti goodbye before turning toward the waiting car in the pick up area.
“How was school bambina?” asked her father as she opened the car door “Did you make a friend?”
Twinkle rolled her eyes “Not like you care.”
Her father sighed “You know I care about you Lumi, I want what’s best for you.”
“Whatever, lets just go home” she said as she put on her seatbelt.
They drove in silence for a while.
“Your mother called earlier, she misses you”
“I miss her too” Twinkle said meekly “Dad, are things really better out here? Or are you homesick?”
“Things are better here in Japan, look how much safer and cleaner the cities are. And I’m sure you can see how much better this middle school academy is to private school in France” her father looked over to her “And I can tell you’re happier here.”
“How am I happier here?”
“Your smile right before you got in the car” he explained “You didn’t fight with that girl you waved bye to. I haven’t seen you smile like that in so long, not since your sister moved out. It’s okay to feel better in this new place and let your guard down a little.”
Twinkle relaxed her shoulders “I do feel a little bit comfortable at that school. And the people here have good hygiene” she laughed “But you still haven’t shown me around!”
-The next day-
“Tensei-kun, when are you going on your nerd trip?” asked Ashido-kun as he tuned his bass.
“It’s called Debate Nationals, and I’m going in exactly one month” responded Tensei with an arm chop “Debate isn’t a nerd thing!”
“Sure it isn’t, that’s why you’re on the top team at a top school” sarcastically spoke Huei.
“We go to the same school Huei-kun” Tensei crossed his arms “Don’t act cool like you don’t have good grades either!”
“Oooooh he told you!” laughed Tetsu.
“I wish I had grades like yours” sighed Ashido-kun “So I can be a top choice for hero school.”
“You want to go to hero school? Does our generation still want to go into such things?” Tensei questioned “Like, yea your mom, my dad and Tetsu’s parents are heroes. But should we? There’s already so many in the hero career, Japan is overflowing with heroes!”
“Don’t be such a buzzkill dude!” Ashido-kun retorted, putting his bass strap over his shoulder “What’s your career choice?!”
“I want to be a lawyer” Tensei said proudly.
The other three boys busted into howling laughter. Quickly turning into tears and gasping for air type laughter.
Tetsu fell off his drumming stool “Oh man, you’re such a nerd Tensei-kun!”
“Being a lawyer isn’t nerdy!” Tensei crossed his arms with a scowl “Theres a whole untapped career market for Hero Law Practice! Imagine all the accountability for those heroes that don’t follow their ethics code? Agencies that don’t pay their lower ranked heroes the minimum wage can get sued. Justice for the justice keepers!”
“Oh I can see it already! You in your little suit, carrying one of those fancy briefcases with your name embossed on it” belittled Huei “Going in the courtroom with an arm chop and going ‘OBJECTION YOUR HONOR!’”
That made the boys start laughing again, irritating Tensei even more.
“Whatever! Lets just start yeah?” Tensei rolled his eyes, regretting opening up to his friends like that “Can I get a count off to Strangers in a Dream.”
The boys gathered themselves to start playing. They haven’t practiced in a while since school started and they had a gig coming up. So they had to get back to the groove of things in Ashido-kun’s garage.
Fast forward to after Tensei’s Debate trip...he bombed it so badly that he was barred from going to another competition until he redeems himself in the mock trials. Hanaka gets suspended for a week but what else is new? So both of the twins are brooding in their rooms on a Saturday afternoon, this called for some parent intervention.
“Mijo? Are you okay?” asked their mother outside the door “may I come in?”
“Sure, come in.”
Tensei was face down on his bed, completely stiff and straight.
“Aw honey, not the coping mechanism” his mother sat on his bed “I thought we grew out of that.”
Tensei lifted his head slightly to respond “I’m so disappointed in myself mom, debate was the one thing I had going for me! I took my one chance to get noticed by my choice of high schools so I can debate for them AND I BLEW IT!” He slammed his face back down “I’m just a nerd that tarnished the school’s debate reputation. My career is ruined!”
“Tensei! Life doesn’t end when you lose a few arguments” his mother comforted “You’re 13 years old, you don’t have a career yet! You’re not even done with puberty, there’s so much more to explore and create. Come on, get up.” Tensei sits up “Good, now go and do something that makes you happy. Whenever something flops for me, I go take a trip to the cafe and buy myself something nice.”
“I don’t know if strumming will make me feel any better” Tensei sighed as he looked at his guitar “I still have to go to school and face my peers with my failure.”
“Ya know what’s nice about hitting rock bottom?”
“What?” asked Tensei with curiosity.
“There’s nowhere to go but up” she smiled “You can build yourself back up, prove it to everyone that you’re worthy of a second chance. Or who knows, maybe this is your chance to move on to another thing that you like and change image.”
Those words lingered with Tensei for what seemed like weeks. Yeah debate was everything to him but was it really time for a change? Every now and then he gets hit with an identity crisis because of getting compared to his dad and twin sister. He’s a little too much like his dad and not as naturally gifted like his twin in terms of quirk. There’s no competition in Tensei’s mind, everyone is going to favor Hanaka over him anyways! It’s always been like that, but at least he has his mother on his side. She’s his biggest inspiration in life, the reason why he wants to go into law and music. She’s encouraged him to use his voice for good and that hard work will always pay off.
-Late Spring, after school-
“Hey Hanaka, how come you don’t use your engines?” Twinkle asked as the group of girls walked to the shoe lockers “My dad says you have the same quirk as your dad and he can run really fast. And it seems like with your fire quirk, you can run even faster.”
Hanaka looked at her engines then shrugged “I dunno, sometimes when I’m in a pinch I use them. But I don’t really have a reason to train myself to use them to their fullest” she takes her shoes out of the locker “Tensei is the one with the cooler quirks, he can teleport and bend metal! All I’m good for is being a heat source.”
Twinkle paused to think “It seems like all of us have our dad’s quirks.” She jumped up on the bench and struck a pose “What if we became heroes?”
“Nya? Us?” Kyanka questioned “I don’t think being a cat girl will get me through hero school.”
“I think it’s a good idea” Petti said, tying her shoe “I don’t really see myself doing anything else to be honest.”
Hanaka opened her mouth to protest, then paused to think it some more “You know what...I don’t see myself doing anything else either.” she put hands on her hips “That’s pretty wack, I don’t wanna be like my daddy and uncle!”
“We’ll brand ourselves differently!” Twinkle suggested, striking a different pose “Lets be gothy girl heroes, fighting by night!”
The four girls exchanged looks of agreement.
“Alright then, we’ll do that” Hanaka caved “But we gotta start training somehow.”
“Oh! Beach training!” jumped Kyanka “Summer break is coming up, lets do beach training and summer assignments together!”
The girls walked together to plan out their training...meanwhile, Tensei was getting whipped into shape verbally.
“...and my closing statement is that quirk suppressant medicine is an attack on human ethics.”
The debate coach quickly scribbled on his paper “Alright, the winner is all for the opposition. Nice work Iida and Tanaka.”
Tensei loudly sighed out in relief, slumping back on his chair “Oh thank the lord! I didn’t know if that ethics line was going to work.”
“Iida-kun? Are you okay?” his debate partner turned to Tensei “You don’t look too good.”
“I’m fine. Just a little strung out” Tensei responded “I can’t lose these next few cases, mock trials are right before summer break.”
“Please get some rest and don’t worry” one of his teammates added “you’re sweating so much and you look pale! We don’t want you to get sick before the mock trials. It’s okay to sit out the next case or two.”
Tensei stands up “Thank you for your concerns but I’ll be fine” he wipes his sweat “Besides, I have the next 5 cases written out and ready to go.”
“No seriously Iida-kun, we’re worried about you” said the senior member “You still have another year of debate to go. Relax and see how you do in the mocks, nationals doesn’t mean anything after October!”
“Alright team, listen up” the coach spoke up to get everyones attention “for this years mock trials, not only are we having those two school’s teams join us but some high school coaches will be spectating. Seniors, I presume you’re going to be at your top game to get scouted.”
That statement made Tensei’s heart drop. This IS his one shot to redeem himself and be scouted as a second year! Theres no room for error now, he needs to bring his A game in two weeks.
Twins, like night and day, couldn’t be any more different! Until a twist of events closed the gap and changed the course of their fate...

the 1th season was my season
[the notorious ranting about season of Supergirl and how i don’t know why i’m still watching]
There’s this thing about Supergirl, first season, when I started to watch like a year later (I guess they were going to 2th season and all the “Who’s gonna be Superman???” stuff). Lemme explain: I don’t like superheroes, I have no respect for Superman or Batman and anyone who wears different underpants on the uniform pants (Makes no sense! Why superheroes? Why?!), my favorite character of comic books is Daredevil (Far from a usual hero) and the one who get me at DC is the Martian Manhunter (Or how we used to call here in Brazil: Ajax, o Marciano).
And there was Supergirl, the brand new series of DCU to save our geek lives.
I’ve always watched the 1th season as a story about an immigrant. Someone who lost every reference of living and part of her story while escaping, we see this kind of stories at news everyday, Syria (nowadays), here in my country there’s a lot of those who left the place they used to call Home and goes anywhere where they can find for many reasons (Most for trying to make money and escape from poverty). Immigrant story, right? That’s Kara from 1th season.
She’s not homeless, but kinda lost of her doings, her belongings, her story. Fragments of a destroyed world and tales of super awesome stuff her cousin did and still doing, must be hard to step out of shadow of someone for so long. And then there’s Alex. She’s Kara big sister, the best sister if you ask me about sisters relationships, still overshadowing since she came to Earth: Kara needs to fit, to be low profile, to understand that all what she lived once it’s over. Not going back, nope, forget it. Alex is there to reminder her every single episode that she can be more of it, more than the regular adults expectations. She can be Kara Zor-El, but most of all, she can be herself. And that's beautiful to watch.
The 1th season i’ve watched called me out for my own story, me and my family have moved of houses so many times we lost count, my big sister often tells me we never gonna settle as the other families because of it, sometimes I desperately wonder when I’ll fit to somewhere, for someone, I don’t know, maybe be normal, you know? Just like Kara from 1th season. That’s what we call somehow representation.
I’ve watched while I was very upset about how my life were going, how to fit, be the average seems so better than outstanding (and getting riled up for it),to be normal was a quiet and nice place to be. And every episode of 1th season gives us the completely opposite, empowerment, full knowlegment of our habilities, and ffs gawd Cat Grant and her weird motivational speeches! Every single episode hooked me so deeply cause i've saw something I was missing: I could be myself and be happy for it.
The Danvers's sisters relationship got me good too, I have a big sister, we don't get along so much since I was 13, I missed her so badly, but when we grow up we're trying to figuring things out. I still don't know how to get along with her, and seeing how supportative Alex and Kara are with each other goes to my soft spot. The 1th season was that mostly, their relationship, their trust about each other, their struggle to be as a family even with all the worse odds (The House of El dysfunctional family, hello?). It remind me I also can be better too. I loved Alex Danvers character at the first sign, I want to be like her someday.
And all this 1th season was like a blast to me, as a viewer and as a storyteller, as a person. That season means a lot to me, for real. Because I've grow up watching television shows that never gave too much attention to these particular topics (And match with my own living): how to be the outsider, having the most wonderful sister support ever and not get lost. And includind the space dad J'onn J'onzz? My favorite League of Justice character EVER?! That plot twist was amazing, right at the solar plexus feelings for good!
Aaaaaaand the season 2 comes.
The writers just... i really don't know what happened right there, it's just... The 2th season it's a completely different show. I can't relate anymore to anyone, I can't see anything as a nice way to keep the hopes up, I definitely can't stand the way how Kara's development was subsided by some misogynist plot ever (FFS of Rao! We are talking about the Girl of Steel, she should not bend like that!) and well here we goes Alex Danvers, my true hero, get out of the closet. Oh well... We've seen this situation before, I finally related to that too, i was pretty older when I finally got the nerve and say out loud I was gay, so been there, done that Alex! All the hugs for ya honey! I hope they didn't fuck your coming out story with cliches. It was the best I could ask for them (writers), do not fuck with this plot. Because this plot it's already doomed since ever, we don't wanna go there again. Make a change, please?
We saw how it ends, right? And I don't know where exactly the writers and producers wanna go with this mess of plot they invented. I just want to say I miss 1th season Supergirl, because that was the truly storytelling of someone trying to figuring out to be human, as we normal boring humans do everyday, even not realizing it, but we do. That's the power of some of media does to us everyday, shows like Supergirl has all the potential of bringing nice messages and bring people together not only for the fun of watching, but because maybe the story that is telling is about them, about us, everybody, somehow.
(BTW thank you Kate McGrath and Odette Annable for saving the plot, I wish Krys Marshall was there since the very beginning - that would be a A+ of dramatic background for the Worldkillers)

Andrew Hammond’s Rolling Stone Top 25
Thought it would be fun to rerank the Rolling Stone top 25.
The first number is my ranking, then band, album, the Rolling Stone ranking, then my personal favorite song.
Without further ado...
25.Nirvana- Nevermind (6) Smells Like Teen Spirit?
Tumblr media
24.The Velvet Underground- The Velvet Underground and Nico (23) Sunday Morning Ok this is another album that I’ve always thought got way too much hype. With a little more of an open mind, I think I do like The Velvet Underground and Nico more, having sat down and given it a couple more listens. Would it be in my personal top 25? Absolutely not. But here we are. I do hear how it influences a lot of the music I do like, but I just can’t get there with this one.
23.Carole King- Tapestry (25) Where You Lead
Through high school and college I worked at HEB. Off and on for eight years at HEB meant I developed a new genre of music: HEB Song. An HEB song has a little elevator music, a little yacht rock, a little boy band, and a lot of Carole King. This probably comes across as a backhanded compliment, but I really do appreciate someone mastering a specific sound even if it’s the sound most likely to get you to pull two bags of chips from the shelf and not just one. Where You Lead receives the favorite song nod because of its connection to Mellisa McCarthy’s breakout show, Gilmore GIrls. A favorite show of my mom and mine growing up.
22.The Notorious B.I.G.- Ready to Die (22) Juicy
A real up and down album that ends up being a little bloated once you listen to it straight through. Never a good sign when you start thinking to yourself “we are still listening to this B.I.G. album?” Juicy on its own would be pretty high up on a top songs list. “Birthdays was the worst days; now we sip Champagne when we thirsty,” my favorite line from that song.
21.Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly (19) Momma
Kind of a tricky one for me, since I think good kid, m A.A.d city runs laps around any other Lamar album. This choice feels a little like a reach by Rolling Stone to include something from the most recent decade in the top twenty five. My favorite parts of To Pimp a Butterfly are the Flying Lotus and Kamasi Washington influenced sounds. The avant garde lo-fi jazz sound that lurks beneath what Lamar spits out makes for a great combination. Great late night jam that took me back to my days in college when I’d play Flying Lotus late at night while studying.
20.Bob Dylan- Highway 61 Revisited (18) Like a Rolling Stone
Highway 61 Revisted was the first Dylan album I listened to thanks to my dad. So I guess I knew electric Bob before I even knew there was an acoustic Bob. Like a Rolling Stone can be debated about whether or not it is a GOAT song, but it’s easily the greatest f-you song. Verse three sticks out especially. Diplomats stealing hits home pretty quickly these days.
19.Public Enemy- It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (15) Don’t Believe the Hype
The funniest album on the list, no question. Flavor Flav really brings the comic relief to Chuck D’s social commentary. Speaking of laughable, the initial Rolling Stone top 500  had It Takes a Nation as the only rap album in the top one hundred. For sure. Released in 1988, It Takes a Nation unfortunately fights the same battles that To Pimp a Butterfly is fighting twenty seven years later. The production bites your ears so viciously, and then just keeps chewing. An unrelenting record that demands the listeners attention, and the attention of the powers at be.
18.Aretha Franklin- I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (13) Respect
I feel like this album should be higher, but here we are once again. Aretha not getting any respect. I recently watched the Sister Act movies, and couldn’t help but wonder how the movies would turn out if she replaced Whoopi Goldberg. Spoiler alert: they’d be even better. Aretha’s voice really is that good, by the way. Take some time to listen to this album on a cold day, and let that gospel voice warm you up from the heart. The album cover perfectly captures that sixties black female aesthetic as well.
17.Michael Jackson- Thriller (12) Beat It
Ok. I know this is a #hammondhottake, but I really do believe what I’m about to say, and not just trying to get clicks. Thriller has a lot of great songs, but as a whole ends up being less than the sum of its parts. Is it possible to have too much pop? If this were a top twenty five songs list I’m sure I’d have Thriller songs higher, but as a complete albumThriller lacks depth. With the recent death of Eddie Van Halen, Beat It gets the nod for my favorite track. Such an iconic guitar riff that Eddie uses to tell white America it’s ok to like this black man’s music.
16.The Beatles- Revolver (11) Tomorrow Never Knows Over time this album has become more critically acclaimed; maybe even surpassing Abbey Road or Sgt Pepper’s. I still have it behind those two, but Revolver is no slouch. Coming out firing with Taxman, this album lays a great framework for Sgt. Pepper’s to later fill in only nine (!!!) months later. Iit makes sense that I would have Sgt. Pepper’s ranked higher since my favorite song on Revolver is Tomorrow Never Knows.  You can imagine how I felt when my favorite show went to credits playing this LSD inspired track.
15.Bob Dylan- Blood on the Tracks (9) Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts
Thanks to listening to this album and Highway 61 Revisited, Dorothy now knows how to imitate Bob Dylan. “It’s meeeeee Bobbbbb!” This album hits hard, especially during the Fall. While sitting on the porch watching the leaves fall I keep imagining each one of them as a different character in Dylan’s tales. Lily, Rosemary, and The Jack of Hearts fall through the air mingling and dancing, taking twists and turns as Dylan’s characters often do in his extended songs.
14.Prince & the Revolution- Purple Rain (8) Let’s Go Crazy
Full disclosure: I have not seen Purple Rain, I’ve only listened to the soundtrack. The one regret I have on our wedding day was not playing Let’s Go Crazy to start the reception danceathon. Dearly beloved… Maybe a post-COVID danceathon will have to start off with this iconic track. I hate when you hear this on the radio and the opening is cut out. You need  to have the set up before you can go crazy. This is the album you give to an alien who asks you what the eighties sounded like. Price creates such a definitive sound with this album. True talent captures a specific time and place, and then makes it timeless.
13.The Beach Boys- Pet Sounds (2) God Only Knows
Go read the Wikipedia on all the technical stuff that this album did for the first time. It’s all over my head, but does factor into the ranking here. I have to trust the studio nerds on this one, because at the end of the day it’s about the destination, not the journey. The Beach Boys create such a warm, beautiful sound, and you don’t need to know how they got it to hear the richness within it. I think a good life goal is to find someone or some-ones to whom you can genuinely sing God Only Knows and mean every single word. One of the best love songs ever. This album inspired The Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper’s, so we also can give thanks for that as well.
12.The Clash- London Calling (16) Lost in the Supermarket
What an opening bass line!! London! Calling! Pure energy in an album that keeps you pumped the whole time. A lot of high tempos, and the slower songs get their energy from the howling bass lines or Joe Strummer’s gruff voice. Like Songs in the Key of LifeI, I appreciate this album more and more as I get older. The lyrics again hit me different than they did when I was younger. Coming out two years before Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister, London Calling accurately describes the inequalities in London that she only exacerbated during her ministry. London Calling: come for the energy, stay for the class critique.
11.Fleetwood Mac- Rumours (7) Dreams
Funny this list came out right before the Tik Tok of quarantine dropped. Ha! So funny if they bumped Rumours up just because of it. Rumours has a crazy background to it, so check out the Wikipedia page to get all the gossip. I really want to talk about the ultimate backhanded compliment, Rumours being a perfect example. Is it mean to say an album is the perfect background music? I love Rumours because I can listen to it while staring at the ceiling, and it has enough going on to keep me engaged. But it might actually be a better listen if you are doing something else. Cooking, dinner conversation, playing with the kids, etc. I mean this is the best way. I really do love this album.
10.The Beatles- Abbey Road (5) Golden Slumbers 9.The Beatles- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (24) Within You and Without You
My high school self would've ranked these albums much higher than I did here. I onced listened to the entire Beatles discography straight through. Nbd. Within You and Without You is my favorite Beatles song (breaking the tie with Abbey Road). This song comes in right behind Born to Run for GOAT opening side two song. But, speaking of side twos, Abbey Road…what a doozie. From You Never Give Me Your Money till The End, each track raises the stakes. Golden Slumbers is my favorite. Both of these albums are hard to talk about really. What hasn’t been said? They also fall victim to being so in the zeitgeist that you end up taking them for granted. The Lebron James of classic rock albums maybe? Just incredibly high expectations going into the release. They deliver a masterpiece, yet people sleep on them despite actually delivering on the astronomical expectations.
8.Stevie Wonder- Songs in the Key of Life (4) As
Rolling Stone’s highest rated double album. I’ve always known of this album, but having sat down and really listened to it straight though I appreciate it even more. Now that I’m older, this album rewards mature ears more than others on this list. Wondering aloud, could Stevie make the same album without making the previous 17(!) prior to it? Taking time to figure out who you are as a musician, and then delivering a mature album like this has to feel so satisfying for an artist. Final thought: love the cymbal on As.
7.Joni Mitchell- Blue (3) River
Maybe it’s the changing weather? Maybe it’s the clarity of sound in a house with two little girls? Still trying to figure out how Joni Mitchell’s Blue went from “the one with Mitchell’s Christmas song” to “the one where I can’t sit on the porch without playing it.” The quieter songs work better for me. Mitchell’s voice pairs so well with her acoustic guitar or piano. Mitchell wrote River in Chapel Hill while caroling with James Taylor, and I’ll be singing this to the girls this Christmas.
6.Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (17) Runaway
Power: track three on this album, and also the best word to describe the sound Kanye creates with this tour de force. There are all time bangers going down the track listing: Power. All of the Lights. Monster. Runaway. Lost in the World. What do the last ten years of rap and R&B look like if My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy never comes out? Is this the most influential rap album this century? Kanye has a lot of baggage these days, but don’t throw this album out with the bathwater.
5.The Rolling Stones- Exile on Main St. (14) Torn and Frayed
Much mythologized, Exile on Main St. has none of the hits but all of the groove. I do think without the background and circumstances Exile might not be remembered as fondly. I still love it though. The rough bluesy tracks like Torn and Frayed especially stand out to me. To picture them trapped in a house in France banging out these tracks give them an even greater life. Given those circumstances, it makes sense that this is a great quarantine album to have playing in the background.
4.Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On (1) What’s Going On
The most political album on the list, and partly why Rolling Stone moved it up to number one after ranking it six in 2003. I am more than ok with it being one. I would say Gaye and Franklin would be one or two if you listed these albums on vocals alone. Gaye’s smooth voice almost works against him while singing such gritty lyrics. Clocking in at 35 minutes I do wonder if there is something about knowing when to stop and saying, “This is the album. We’ve said all we need to say.” Although number five on my list might say otherwise...
3.Radiohead- Kid A (20) Everything in Its Right Place
When will this album start to sound old? If this came out next week it would still seem ahead of its time. I have yet to see Radiohead live. Not holding my breath, but I do hear my favorite song as my alarm goes off every morning. . Waking up to Everything in Its Right Place gives me a sense that today everything will be as it should be. What will happen will happen, and I will resolutely go about the day. Or as Optimistic reminds us, “the best you can is good enough.” This is Radiohead’s best.
2.Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (10) Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
What an interesting career. Her only solo studio album, but what a tour de force. It always catches me by surprise how long the album is (clocking in at 69:20), but it never really drags. Justine and I danced to Can’t Take My Eyes Off You for our first dance. I often wonder how Hill would respond to hearing that a rural white male resonates with her music. She’d probably hate it since it seems like that’s what sort of turned her off from the music industry in general. Still Processing does an excellent job of reflecting on her career on this podcast.
1.Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run (21) Born to Run
This was an easy choice for me once I saw it in the top twenty five. I am actually surprised Darkness on the Edge of Town didn’t beat out B2R (as Bruce puts it when writing set lists). Darkness seems more fitting for these times than Born to Run, not that songs like Backstreets or Meeting Across the River can’t capture the current malaise. Home, to me, sounds like the harmonica and piano duet at the beginning of Thunder Road. GOAT opening side-two track: Born to Run. One of my first COVID memories is watching this on the second Sunday of lockdown. So electric. It gives me comfort to know that I’ll be listening to these eight songs for the rest of my life.

A Good Kid.
@yarrayora requested a Casey Jones fic from the point of view of his fellow students and his teachers, I hope you enjoy! Contains some spoilers from tmnt 2012 season 2 and 3
“He’s a good kid!” His parents said with a sheepish smile when Casey was in preschool. The smell of rain still fresh in the air though the showers had stopped. Casey took the opportunity to play in the mud and stomp in puddles, tracking mud inside and dripping wet. The teacher rolled his eyes, “Something like that. That little Arnold Jr. of yours must be a handful.” He commented as Casey now toweled dry barreled into his parents giving them a hug. His parents laughed, and agreed. “He takes after me.” They both say in unison.
In kindergarten during Show and Tell one day, Casey stood up as straight as possible and said in a loud voice he had a big announcement. “Go on Arnold, please tell the class.” His teacher smiled warmly already learning there was no way to control Casey’s excited volume. Casey took a deep breath as if he couldn’t wait to get it out, “I’MGONNABEABIGBROTHER!” he shouted quickly and stumbling over his words. “Can you repeat that hun?” The teacher asked not quite understanding what he said. “I’M GONNA BE A BIG BROTHER! MY MOM SAYS SO, HER TUMMY IS HUGE! ITS GOT A BABY IN IT!! THEY THINK IT’S A GIRL AND SHES GONNA LOOK LIKE ME AND IM GONNA TEACH HER TO ICE SKATE!! WE’RE GONNA PLAY HOCKEY TOGETHER!!! IM GONNA BE THE BEST BIG BROTHER EVER!!!!” Casey exclaimed, practically vibrating in excitement. His teacher gave him a grin, “We are all very happy for you Arnold. I’m sure you’ll be a very good brother, though you might have to wait a few years to teach your little brother or sister how to ice skate.” Casey wilted at the news of waiting for ice skating but brightened once again at the prospect of having a little brother or sister to call his own.
Casey is a good kid and a good older brother. His mom and dad both work so he takes care of his little sister when they have to do “grownup stuff” Casey proudly shares to his classmates. “He’s a responsible kid,” Says one teacher to another during their lunch break gossip time, usually talking about students and things they tell teachers. “If a little excitable.” Another adds.  “Did you hear how his mom is sick a lot? Arnold says that’s because she “helps sick people” but I’m not sure.” The gym teacher reveals. “Well nursing job or not that sounds a lot like an autoimmune disease.” The science teacher mentions. The language arts instructor looks up, “Oh my father had that, it was absolutely awful. He passed a few weeks ago.” The thought of Arnold Casey Jones Jr. disappeared from their thoughts as they offered their condolences.
“Hey Case’ what’s up?” Asked a classmate as Casey concentrated on coloring a Get Well Soon Card in second grade. “Hmm?” He asked as he looked up, “Oh hey, I’m making a card for my mom. She’s not feeling well. It’s just taking a little longer than usual to feel good again.” Casey explained somewhat glumly. “I’m sorry about that. I hope she feels better!” Says the classmate. “Thanks!” Says Casey before adding a quiet “Me too.” A teacher then notices the card and tells Casey she hopes his mom gets well soon. She doesn’t.
The condition of Mrs. Jones hasn’t improved the teachers learn. When Arnold Jr. misses two weeks of school in third grade, everyone knows what happened. The Monday after the second week, Casey enters class, eyes red and glassy and wearing an oversized jacket that teachers can only assume belonged to his mother. He doesn’t speak, he ignores words spoken to him and only pretends to do his work. This continues for a while. At first teachers are able to ignore it and place it on him grieving, but it continues still. When they regretfully have to ask his father to come in to talk about Casey’s grades his father blankly replies, “He’s a good kid.”
In fourth grade, Casey gets into his first fight. Kids can be cruel. They joke and say terrible things, they can’t comprehend the consequences. That is until someone teaches them. Casey taught them. From what the teachers gathered, two kids have been making fun of Casey for a while now. For the longest he hadn’t let it bother him, but they allegedly brought up his mother. Casey had apparently just snapped. Both kids were sporting bruises and Casey had a large scrape on his cheek. He hadn’t spoken since the fight ended aside from the words, “They said mean stuff about my mom…” Casey has sat in infuriated science. “He’s a good kid!” His father pressed, looking disheveled, his shirt incorrectly buttoned up. Arnold Sr. let out a deep sigh, “He hasn’t been handling his mother’s death well, no kid should have to go through this. He hates not being around his sister and I, like he’s scared we’re gonna leave him too. Those kids shouldn’t have been saying that stuff, Arnold shouldn’t have retaliated. Can you please let him off the hook just this once?” Casey’s father pleaded, looking desperate. The teachers pitied what was left of the Jones family, and decided if Casey apologized to the two boys, he’s be off the hook. Casey manages a muttered apology, refusing to meet anyone’s eyes. He stays silent on the way home.
Casey manages to stay out of trouble for the most part in fifth grade. Aside from minor arguments and a generally rambunctious behavior he is fine. He angers easier and is more protective of his friends. Especially his sister. When she started kindergarten, he would walk her to all her classes, usually causing him to be late for his own. When he found out she was being messed with by some older students, Casey was infuriated to stay the least. He threw the first punch and got the shit beaten out of him, but it guaranteed his sister wouldn’t be messed with again. Arnold Sr. shows up fifteen minutes late to the meeting, he smells of alcohol. He doesn’t try to defend Casey’s case, he doesn’t call him a good kid. Just asks “How much trouble is he in?” and is informed Casey has a week’s detention. His father vows Casey will be punished accordingly for his actions, the teacher doesn’t notice Casey’s fearful expression as he leaves with his sister and father.
On the first day of sixth grade, Casey shows up with a black eye. The teacher calls his father, he doesn’t answer. Casey says his dad is busy. He doesn’t say that his father is passed out drunk, he doesn’t say that his father is the one who punched him last night. So the teacher never knows. Casey says he was fixing the lock on his doorknob when his sister had opened the door. “Oh, Arnold I’m so sorry that happened. You should see the nurse and get some ice for that.” His teacher says with sympathy. Casey mumbles something, the teacher frowns “I’m sorry I didn’t hear that dear.” The boy looks down, “I don’t wanna go by Arnold. I wanna be called Casey.” She looks surprised, he hadn’t had a problem with that name during roll call. “Alright, Casey. Let’s get you down to the nurse.” The teacher says with a shrug. She’ll never know the Casey doesn’t want to be constantly reminded of his dad every time he’s referred to. She doesn’t know Casey learns to use his mom’s old makeup to hide bruises.
Casey gets into fights; his father was called in so much they just stop bothering to call. When they do call him, Arnold Sr. doesn’t bother to defend Casey’s actions. He just says “He’s a bad kid, he isn’t going to change. He’ll be punished accordingly.” Always smelling of alcohol and cigarette smoke. Teachers had begun to dread getting Casey in their classes. The plethora of friends Casey used to have had vanished, he scares people. Casey decides to quit on regular old ice skating. He tries out for hockey. He’s a bad kid.
Casey makes friends with people on his hockey team, some still keep their distance. Though Casey’s a natural player and a fun guy to be around. He’s still competitive, still has an anger that can’t be extinguished. To his team, he’s a fun-loving knucklehead that’s got a real angry streak on an off the ice. To teachers he’s a slacker, who only applies himself in hockey, a bad kid with bad anger issues. The only thing that seems to engage him is hockey and fighting, everything else makes him feel stupid or inadequate. So he doesn’t try, so it doesn’t hurt when he fails. Casey is told he’ll be kicked off the hockey team if he doesn’t bring up his grades. He starts to look for a tutor, but who would tutor a notoriously bad kid? Casey tells teachers that no one’s going to want to tutor him, a student craving extra credit for mysteriously missing days disagrees.
Casey hits it off with his tutor, so he says to a nosy teacher. He brags that April O’Neil is “So into him.” April rolls her eyes and laughs, Casey has a friend he finally close to. April first saw Casey as a bad kid, a no brained thug who just wants to fight. When he discovered the criminal underworld and the threat of the Kraang and dons a vigilante costume with a hockey stick; April thinks maybe he’s an okay kid who just wants to fix the city and bust a few heads. Then she truly gets to know him, sees him interacting with the turtles, protecting people he cares about and realizes he’s a good kid, a good person, a good friend who’s been dealt shitty cards in life. She just wishes other people would see the real him under his façade.
When the Kraang invade, many are unaccounted for when humans are enslaved and mutated. Casey Jones, April O’Neil, and Irma Langinstein are three of the many. Teachers and students alike can only hope the three are alive, and pray for their own safety as the mutagen splashes down upon them. The pain and feeling of bones shifting and skin morphing is unlike anything other experienced. The feeling is traumatizing and agonizing but they will forget it all soon enough. There is only serving the Kraang. There is only Kraang.
Casey and April’s trigonometry teacher’s vision clears, everything aches and smells heavily of something alien burning her nose. Above her stands Arnold Casey Jones, his expression concerned and his hand outstretched ready to pull her up. Her memories feel disjointed but they come back slowly. “Casey….Casey Jones..? Where am I? What happened?” She asks woozily and is supported by Casey before she falls. “Don’t worry about that Ma’am. I’m going to get you home safe.” Casey says in calm reassuring tone, there is a flash of light and suddenly they are standing at the entrance of her house. Her memory clears and she gasps, “You’re alive! H-how am I alive?” His teacher asks in confused panic. “The military came through, I’m just doing my part volunteering to help people get home safe.” He soothes. His trigonometry teacher nods half dazed and is helped into her home by Casey. He gives her a hug, tells her to stay safe and is out the door, gently closing it shut behind him. His trigonometry teacher seems stunned, Casey was failing her class in the months before the invasion. She always thought of him as a delinquent, yet here he is volunteering and doing his part in the efforts to help things get back to normal. What a good kid.
A student being harassed by Purple Dragons for his wallet is saved by a hockey mask wearing vigilante clutching a baseball bat. “Casey Jones?!” The teenager asks in surprise. “-Huh?” Says the vigilante before trying to deepen his voice, “Uh no, who’s that?” At the classmate’s look clearly saying he wasn’t buying it, Casey sighed and used his regular voice, “How’d you know it was me?” Casey asked. “Dude you literally shouted, NO ONE MESSES WITH CASEY JONES! While you were beating up those guys.” Casey looked a sheepish as he could while still wearing a hockey mask. “Oh, uh right.” The classmate looked around awkwardly, “Um listen Case’ I just wanted to say thanks dude. You’re actually pretty cool.” The mask wearing boy seems stunned “Yeah no problem, get home safe man.” Casey said before pulling himself up to the nearby fire escape and seemingly vanishing. “Cool.” Whispered the teenager.
Everyone in school has heard stories of students or teachers being saved by April O’Neil or Casey Jones. Sometimes in strange costumes or armor, other times in just everyday clothing. Nobody confronts them on it, or says anything to the police. They feel honor bound, grateful for what Casey and April have done for them. No one thinks of April as a weak and nerdy girl anymore, she’s strong and powerful and a force of nature all her own. No one thinks of Casey as a stupid student and angry thug, he’s protective and crafty and a good kid. He’s always been a good kid.

sometimes we celebrate the silence
For @nerdzewordart, Happy Feast of Fortuna! You requested art first and fic second, but alas, my art skills are not up to par. Instead, take highschool au Jason/Piper and the two aesthetics I made to match. @feastoffortuna2017
Rating: T Genre: Romance and Friendship Characters: [Piper McLean and Jason Grace], Annabeth Chase, Leo Valdez, Percy Jackson Words: 3,663
Sometimes silence is more romantic that a raging beach party. / jasiper / highschool au / for nerdzewordart on tumblr / Feast of Fortuna 2017

Annabeth shut the door more aggressively than she needed to, and Piper laughed. "That bad?"
The blonde slouched in the seat, scowling. "You have no idea."
Piper turned the key in the ignition and her car rumbled to life. She gave Annabeth a pointed look and her friend fastened her seatbelt reluctantly. Piper turned her eyes to the road and waited for Annabeth to start talking. This was usually how their conversations went when one of them was frustrated and it worked.
"He's being obstinate," she complained. "It's such a simple fix, so why won't he listen to me?"
"Annie," Piper drawled as she turned the corner onto Annabeth's street. "You realise that you're fighting with your boyfriend over something small right? You guys have been dating for three years and this is what you choose to fight over?"
"It's important!" Annabeth insisted. The blonde removed her sunglasses, dropped them into the cupholder of the car, and ran a hand through her blonde curls.
Piper slowed to a stop at a red light, easing off the gas, and raised an eyebrow at her best friend. "Annabeth, I love you, but you're fighting over a goddamn tie."
Annabeth turned her head away insistently. "We should match. Plus, his mum agrees with me and it's her wedding."
"I mean, I agree with you too, but ultimately Percy is the one who will be wearing the tie. Do you really think his mum is going to care if he's wearing a tie? She's got tons of other things to worry about," Piper pointed out.
Annabeth sighed. "You're right."
"As always," Piper interjected.
"And," Annabeth continued, casting Piper a firm look, "we'll be fine at the party tonight."
"Good. Tonight is about fun, so you'd better be ready."
Piper turned into Annabeth's driveway and put her car in park. Annabeth leant over and hugged her and Piper returned the embrace as best she could. Annabeth hopped out of the car and ran across the manicured lawn to the front door of the typical suburban home. Piper watched to make sure her friend got inside alright before she slid the gear shift into reverse and headed to her own home.
She turned up the radio and began humming along to the catchy pop song on the radio. Normally pop music wasn't her thing, but the start of summer was a special occasion. It called for stupid summer anthems and drinking at the beach with friends. One didn't come without the other, so Piper embraced the terrible music taste of the radio DJ with open arms.
Driving from Annabeth's house, so close to the school, to her own was not a short trip, but she did it every day. It wasn't like she was paying for the gas to her car herself, and every minute she spent with her extremely busy friend was worth it. Besides, it wasn't like there was anything she could do at her own house without drowning in the endless hallways and empty rooms.
She drove through the edges of the town, spying some classmates milling around in the streets. Everyone was looking in good spirits and a few waved to Piper as she drove by. She cruised past rows of identical suburban houses and then through the rougher neighbourhood with the more interesting homes. She spent a good amount of time in this area too, thanks to Leo, but she still wasn't home.
As the houses became sparser, and the lots larger, Piper finally spied her house. She rolled up to the edge of her driveway and watched as the gate slid away, granting her access. Piper parked her car in her spot in the garage and jumped out. She grabbed her bag from the front seat on the way and entered the house.
The closing door echoed through the home and Piper knew that it meant her dad wasn't home. He wouldn't be home until later, and she would be lucky if he was home before she went out. Still, she knew things were better than they could have been. At least these days, she saw him nearly every day.
Piper dumped her bag by the door and headed straight for the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of water and wandered towards the window, the ice cubes clinking against the glass. It was nearing four o'clock and the sun was still fairly high in the sky.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket and Piper fished it out. She had a new message from Percy. She smiled subconsciously at the picture of Leo and Jason set as her home screen as she swiped to read the message.
Order pizza yet?
Piper rolled her eyes. Of course, Percy was worried about the pizza. I'll do it now, she replied. Piper opened the app for the pizza place and created a new order. She bought six and set the delivery address for Percy's house at 8 PM.
She glanced at her watch again and saw it had inched only marginally closer to 4 PM. Piper took another glance out at the blue skies streaked with small, white clouds. It was a beautiful day and there was no one saying she couldn't go down sooner than the others.
Hitting the surf in 15. She fired the text to both Percy and Annabeth so they wouldn't be wondering where she was.
Piper headed up to her room, ignored the growing pile of clothes on her desk chair, and headed right for her closet. She picked out her bathing suit and a pair of ratty shorts. She pulled on one of Jason's shirts that she'd stolen and repurposed by cutting the arms off and cropping it, and grabbed a flannel to finish her look.
She slid down the bannister to the main floor and hummed as she walked back into the kitchen, leaving a note for her dad reminding him that she was sleeping over at Percy's. Piper headed back into the garage, locking the door to the house behind her, and opened the back of her car.
She loaded a cooler into the back, as well as another case of beer and a carton of hard liquor. Since Piper's half-sister was of age, it was easy for her to get a run when she needed it, and an end of the year beach party was a perfectly acceptable reason for Silena to buy for her.
Piper threw in a case of coke for those who wouldn't be drinking, and the bundle of firewood she had picked up the week before. Satisfied she had everything, Piper got into her car and headed out.
She reached Percy's place in ten minutes and parked in the shade of the tree out front. She left most of the stuff in her car, bringing only her bag out, as she walked around the side of Percy's house and headed down towards the beach. She kicked off her shoes as soon as she was on the soft sand, relishing in the way that the warm sand slid familiarly through her toes.
She grabbed her board from the rack near the dock and dumped her bag. She shed her shorts and top before pushing out into the water. The sunlight glinted off the waves and the familiar sea breeze made her grin.
School had been making it hard to find time to really hit the waves, but it was summer now. She and Percy had already made a pact to surf as much as possible together before he left for New York, and to try and teach Annabeth and Jason the basics. Still, there were few things Piper loved more than late afternoon rides with the promise of a great evening ahead.
She paddled out and sat up on her board, watching the water intently. Gentle waves bobbed her up and down, but she didn't see one she wanted to ride just yet. There was a boat further out that she could see, and she watched as it rose and fell due to the perfect wave.
She swam out to meet it before turning and riding it in. Just as it began to crest, she pushed up, planting her feet firmly, and she rode. Piper was perfectly balanced and perfectly at ease as she carved through the water, spraying herself in the face with cool droplets.
The wave broke and she wiped out, submerging completely, but she broke the surface easily, a grin spreading across her face.
She had missed this.
At close to 6:45, Piper was lying on the beach on her board, eyes closed while she soaked up some sun. She had nearly fallen asleep when someone plopped into the sand next to her. She opened one eye and to see who had disturbed her.
Percy Jackson cracked a sly grin and Piper smirked at him in reply.
"Ties, huh?" she teased.
Percy rolled his eyes. "Wow, so she told you."
"She tells me everything," Piper reminded.
"Very true." He rolled his shoulders forward and squinted towards the horizon and the slowly setting sun. "How were the waves today?"
"Good until the boats started going by," she replied. "When's Annabeth coming?"
"Now," Annabeth's voice cut in. Piper lolled her head back and spotted Annabeth standing close by, a blanket bundled under one arm.
Percy grinned upon seeing his girlfriend and he jumped up. He jogged over to her and pulled her into a kiss which Annabeth happily recuperated. Annabeth's blanket dropped to the sand as she slid her arms around Percy's neck and Piper rolled her eyes. Her friends were notorious for their PDA, even when they'd only been apart for a couple of hours.
"Hey, guys!" Piper called after they showed no signs of acknowledging her presence.
Annabeth broke the kiss and laughed at Piper's expression. "Like you wouldn't do the same with Jason if he was here."
Piper shrugged. "He's not."
Percy picked up Annabeth's blanket it draped it over his shoulder. "Anyways," he cut in, "the party starts at 7:30 and we should be good till around 11 when it gets too dark or cold."
Annabeth stepped next to Piper, draping an arm over her shoulders. "It's weird, isn't it? The last party of senior year?"
"Only because you guys are leaving me," Piper reminded.
"We'll be with you in spirit," Percy teased. "Now, where's that firewood? We should start setting up."
When the pizza arrived, the party was in full swing. Around thirty to forty people from the senior class were on the beach. Music was blaring from a boombox that Travis Stoll, the self-proclaimed DJ, had brought and the bonfire was crackling merrily.
The alcohol had been cracked into, but only just enough so that everyone was having a good time. Piper herself was nursing her first beer and hanging out near the fire. Her eyes were locked onto the dancing, orange flames and a small smile curled up the edges of her lips.
Suddenly, someone practically jumped onto her back and she stumbled forwards, almost falling. Piper spun and glared at her assailant, seeing Leo standing behind her with a cheeky grin on his face. He was holding a cup in one hand and his phone in the other.
"That was rude," Piper told him.
Leo laughed. "Come on, it was funny."
"You would have owed me a drink if I spilt this," Piper informed him, raising her drink in his direction.
"Gladly," Leo replied cheerfully.
Piper finally dropped her act and smiled at her best friend. "So, how's your night been?"
Leo shrugged. "Pretty good. I came with Calypso, but she wanted to dance, and my feet are not made for dancing."
Piper turned and looked towards where most of the dancing was taking place. It was the area closest to the speaker. Drew Tanaka and her friends were in the middle, but there were others, including Leo's mostly-girlfriend Calypso, having a good time too.
"You didn't go with her?"
"Like I said," Leo replied, "I'm not a dancer."
"Whatever you say," Piper teased. "Come get some pizza with me."
Leo linked arms with her and they walked up towards the top of the beach where someone had put out a table with the pizza displayed across it. Piper grabbed a piece of cheese and a piece of vegetarian and Leo took three pieces of pepperoni. Piper rolled her eyes. His stomach was a well-catalogued characteristic of his.
Leo stuck his tongue out at her and pulled her towards the water again. They found a spot in the sand where they could sit and just barely have their toes get wet. Piper watched as a group of people splashed around in the waves and she recognised Percy and Annabeth amongst them.
"You ready for them to leave?" Leo asked, following her gaze to Percy and Annabeth.
Piper smiled softly and took a bite of her pizza. "I'm not ready for anyone to leave."
"Just you and I left here," Leo mused. "The terrible two."
"You're the terrible one," she taunted.
Leo shoved her shoulder and she grinned, biting into her pizza again.
The sun was almost dipping below the waves now, and it spread a warm glow over the water and the teens spread across the beach. Piper leant back in the soft sand, letting her hands support her weight as she stared out across the beach. It was finally really starting to feel like summer.
Leo's phone buzzed and she watched as he opened the message and practically jumped to his feet. "Someone has sparklers!" he exclaimed excitedly. "I'll go grab us a couple."
"Want me to come?" Piper offered.
"Nah," he replied. "You seem comfortable."
Piper raised an eyebrow. "If you're sure."
Leo saluted her and jogged across the beach towards the fire. Piper turned back to the ocean and she watched Hazel, a friend in sophomore year who was dating the senior Frank Zhang, splash Annabeth before hiding quickly behind her boyfriend. Percy then grabbed Annabeth around the waist and basically dove under the water, drenching them both. Piper bit down a laugh.
The familiar sizzling noise of a sparkler caught her attention and she turned towards the sound, expecting to see Leo with one in each hand. Instead, she was met with a very different, but no less welcome, sight.
Jason Grace was holding two sparklers in one hand and smiling at her affectionately. He was wearing board shorts and a white t-shirt with the University of San Francisco logo on the front. Piper blinked at him in surprise and she imagined that she looked like a deer in headlights.
She placed her drink on the ground and stood up. "You're here! You said you weren't going to be back in time!"
Jason shrugged. "There was a change of plans, and we got back earlier than expected."
Piper lunged forwards and threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly. He smelled like fresh air and other nice things, as always. His free arm wrapped around her in return and it found a place on her waist as she pulled back from the hug. She was smiling wildly and Jason laughed at her. Piper stepped on his toes and pushed herself upwards, brushing their lips together briefly.
"You could have texted me," she said as she pulled away.
Jason nodded. "I could have." He passed her one of the sparklers and Piper took it, grinning. "I wanted to surprise you," he explained.
Piper twirled her sparkler near his face, leaving little streaks of light. "Well, I'm definitely surprised. And I'm guessing Leo was in on this, since he left to bring me one of these, and you were the one who showed up."
"I may have texted him," Jason mused, twirling his own sparkler.
Piper laughed and laced the fingers of their free hands together, pulling him with her as she ran towards the water. The seawater was cold as it lapped at their ankles, but Piper splashed Jason anyways and he splashed her back.
Soon they were both wet and laughing and their sparklers were extinguished. Jason took the dead sticks and tucked them into a free pocket before rejoining their hands. Most people were moving out of the water as the first remnants of the stars began to appear on the eastern horizon.
Several people had left, including most of the more drunk people, but someone had turned the music from the speaker down really low and people were gathering around the fire. Jason led Piper over and they found some seats on a log next to Will Solace and Nico di Angelo.
Will had a guitar in his lap and he smiled at Piper as they sat. "In the mood to sing?" he asked.
She shrugged. "Why not?"
Will strummed a few chords and Piper hummed along, catching onto the song easily. She started singing the first verse, and around the fire, people joined in. By the time they reached the chorus, almost the whole group was singing.
Jason's arm wrapped around Piper's waist and he smiled at her. He wasn't singing, but Piper wasn't going to fight him over it since they'd long established Jason did not have the voice for singing like she did. It was a joke shared between them with love.
Will started into another song and people sang along again. Eventually, the guitar chords faded into the background as people talked about things and made toasts, raising glasses full of water, coke, or slightly more risky substances. Piper had abandoned her beer, donating it to Leo, and Jason was only drinking water.
Piper leant into Jason's side and he pressed a light kiss to the side of her head. She tangled their hands again and ran the pads of her free digits over their interconnected knuckles, humming under her breath.
By now, the numbers had dwindled and there was only a core group of kids left. It was nearly 10:30, and the fire was just starting to burn through the last set of logs.
The party would be wrapping up very soon, but with her boyfriend at her side and her friends around her, Piper wasn't sure she wanted to head home, or to bed, just yet. She squeezed Jason's hand and he looked down at her.
"I have my car if you wanna go somewhere."
"Where?" he asked curiously.
Piper smiled. "Honestly, let's just go somewhere."
Jason's lips twitched. "Sounds like a plan."
They excused themselves from the circle, bidding everyone a goodnight, and headed off the beach towards where Piper was parked. She tossed Jason the keys when they reached her car. Despite not even finishing one drink, Piper wasn't going to risk driving.
She pulled up the address for a park on the north side of town and began directing Jason there. When they arrived, Jason parked near a lookout and Piper jumped out of the car, wandering towards it. It looked out over the city and Piper could just barely make out the smudge of orange that was the dying fire from the party on the beach.
Jason walked over, holding a blanket that had been in the backseat of her car. They spread the blanket and lay down together, staring up at the sky and the stars that were peeking through the indigo-violet sky. Piper curled into Jason and his arm easily wound around her waist in return.
"I love summer," she said quietly.
"I know you do," Jason agreed.
"I'm just not sure if I'm ready for everyone to leave," she murmured.
"I'm not sure any of us are ready to leave either," he admitted. "Besides, I'm going to San Francisco. It's not that far. It's Percy and Annabeth who are both going to New York."
"I hope they stay together."
"They've been good to each other for a long time," Jason said, tightening his grip around her a little.
Piper's eyes found the beginnings of a constellation. "So have we," she added.
"I'm glad."
They lay in comfortable silence for a moment. "I love you," Piper said softly.
"I love you too," Jason replied. His voice was low and gentle and Piper pressed a kiss to his cheek.
"Even though you're going away, we'll be okay, won't we?" she asked tentatively.
"Of course," Jason assured. "In fact, I actually have something for you."
Piper sat up and Jason copied her. She stared at him as he pulled a small box out of his pocket. Her eyes locked onto it and she nearly forgot to breathe.
"I don't really want to see my life without you. We're so young right now, but this feels so right. So," he trailed off, opening the box, "I'm hoping this will help us stay connected even when I'm away."
Piper gently reached out to touch the circular locket. It was gold and smaller than a penny, but it was embellished simply and beautifully. She flicked the tiny clasp and revealed their picture from prom. She smiled and ran a nail along the glass pane.
"It's beautiful, Jason, thank you."
"You're probably going to say I didn't have to, but I wanted to."
Piper laughed. "Right, because the movie star's daughter needs more things that are gold."
Jason kissed her then, and Piper didn't think much past it as she wound her arms around his neck. The kiss was lazy and slow, but romantic and full of emotion. They broke apart when Piper ran out of air and she pressed another, feather-light kiss to the edge of Jason's lips.
"This is the start of a perfect summer," she whispered so only he could hear her.
After that, it was quiet, but that was alright because despite how much she enjoyed people, there was something truly romantic and fulfilling about a little silence every now and then.
