[...] The day hangs heavily. Marilyn Monroe killed herself yesterday & today an English actress (Pat Marlowe, aged 28 and described as former friend of MM) in sympathy did the same. The pointlessness of our life - the awful cheap regard of life. [...] Rain pouring all the time.

Jamaica became independent from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962. Β  Β
Jamaica Independence Day
Jamaica Independence Day is celebrated on August 6 annually. This day became a national celebration in 1962 when Jamaica became independent with full dominion status in the Commonwealth, under a constitution that retained the British monarch as head of state. The first elected Prime Minister was Alexander Bustamante.
Jamaica’s independence meant that Britain no longer controlled the country’s affairs. Thus, these became primarily managed by the new Prime Minister and his locally elected cabinet. Furthermore, Jamaica’s independence also meant that they had to form a constitution, symbols, emblems, army, currency, and passports.
History of Jamaica Independence Day
Jamaica was one of the first colonies in the so-called β€˜new world.’ Jamaica became a Spanish colony in 1509. In May 1655, the British took over the island during the Anglo-Spanish War. In the 1950s, the British Empire broke up; thus, Jamaica took advantage of the situation to make several amendments to its constitution to allow greater self-government and a Prime Minister. In 1958, Jamaica joined the West Indies Federation β€” a political union of various Caribbean islands that were also colonies of the United Kingdom.
By September 1961, Jamaicans had become dissatisfied with the Federation. The slow-paced move to independence led to a referendum in Jamaica where 54% of Jamaicans voted to leave the Federation. In 1962, the β€˜Jamaica Labour Party,’ under the leadership of Bustamante, won the elections, which resulted in the passing of the Jamaica Independence Act by the United Kingdom Parliament on July 19, 1962. On August 6, 1962, the British granted them independence, and the Jamaican flag flew for the first time.
Bustamante became Jamaica’s first Prime Minister, with Jamaica joining the Commonwealth of Nations. The main highlight of Jamaica Independence Day is the β€˜Jamaica Independence Festival,’ which showcases a grand parade, traditional music, the World Reggae Dance Final, and other events.

How to Observe Jamaica Independence Day
Attend a celebration
Plan a party
Celebrate the whole weekend
The main celebration takes place at the National Arena in Independence Park in the evening. On Independence Day, Jamaicans take part in grand street parades, wearing clothing colored like the Jamaican flag and putting on all manner of cultural displays.
If you are not chanced to attend a Jamaican party, you can organize one with friends. Be sure to decorate the place with Jamaican flags and play reggae music all night.

5 Facts About Jamaican Culture
Language
Cuisine
Clothing
Religion
People and traditions
Although English is Jamaica’s official language, the local dialect combines elements of other languages β€” from Spanish, African, and Irish dialects to British and American phrases.
Jamaican cuisine focuses on Caribbean spices, which pack a punch.
Traditional Jamaican clothes are calico in nature whereby women wear bright handmade dresses and complete their outfits with a headscarf that wraps up the wearer’s hair.
Jamaica is a Christian nation and the majority of the locals are highly religious and attend church on Sundays with the whole family.
Jamaicans have many traditions, and one includes the local practice of burying the umbilical cords of newborns beneath trees with the belief that this gives the baby a permanent connection to its homeland.
Why Jamaica Independence Day is Important
It’s an opportunity to remember the importance of freedom
It’s a time to party
It’s an opportunity to honor those who fought for independence
Jamaica gained its freedom for self-governance after more than 300 hundred years of British colonial rule. However, the road to independence was long and hard.
Jamaicans celebrate this day by partying all weekend long. Thus, this could be an opportunity to have fun with your family and friends.
This day can also be an opportunity to honor those who fought for Jamaica’s independence. Many people must have fought to achieve this and today is the day to honor them.

Things non-comic fans get wrong about Peter Parker.
Several people who don't read the comics seem to get ideas about characters and how they act. It's fine when you're doing to characters you know about, but for characters you don't know about, not so much.
Please note: This post is not meant to gate keep anyone from comics, MCU or any other Marvel related products.
#1: He is ugly. This one is false for the most part. Look at the women he has dated, Liz Allan, Gwen, MJ, Black Cat, Carol Danvers and others.
#2: He is naive. This one is also false. Peter is optimistic. There is a difference. Peter himself recognizes that the world is a terrible place. However he thinks it can get better. That is the whole point of him not killing his enemies.
#3: He has to suffer to be relatable. No, just no. This one is false. He doesn't have to suffer to be relatable. He is relatable because he deals with relatable problems. He is nerdy, has to make ends meet, etc. That is how he was relatable. Not suffering. And certainly not whatever the f#ck is going on in the current run.
#4: He is hated by other heroes. This one mainly stems from the Superior Spider-Man comic arc, but is still blatantly wrong. He has several friends in the comics, such as: Daredevil, Deadpool (to an extent) Wolverine, Luke Cage, Johnny Storm, Cloak and Dagger, and several others.
#5: He is not respected by the other heroes. This was also caused by Superior Spider-Man. However several people respect him. Mr. Fantastic and Iron Man respect him for his intelligence. Captain America calls him on of the greatest men he's ever known. Thor says (in a complimentary way) that he was the most mortal man he knew. T'Challa let him eat a Heart-Shaped Herb. Hulk was one of the few people who knew Peter's identity after OMD.
#6: He was a teenager for most of his publication history. The first ever Spider-Man comic was published in August 1962 in Amazing Fantasy #15. He he graduated and became an adult on June 8, 1965 in The Amazing Spider-Man Volume 1 #28.

BOOTLEGS 2023
The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings β€” the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!
Anyhoo, here's a sampling of the Doom & Gloom goods from 2023 to get you caught up ... thank you to the tapers, the archivists, the fans, the innocents.

Yesterday was the birth anniversary of Anne Sexton, she would have been 95. As you may already know, she and Sylvia were friends, very supportive to each other. The one that follows is the last letter Sylvia wrote to Anne:
"Tuesday, 21 August 1962
Dear Anne,
I was absolutely stunned and delighted with the new book (All The Pretty Ones). It is superbly masterful, womanly in the greatest sense, and so blessedly unliterary. One of the rare original things in this world one comes upon. I had just said the day before "One book I will buy is Anne Sexton's next", & there it was, in the morning mail the next day. I have these small clairvoyances. But I don't have to be clairvoyant to see the Pulitzer and National Book Award and the rest in your lap for it. I think "The Black Art" comes in my top favorite dozen, with Northeaster Letter, Flight, The Letter Crossing Long Island Sound, Water, Woman with Girdle, Old, For God While Sleeping, Lament, Hell, they are all terrific.
Tell me what it is like to be a Lady Poet Laureate. How was the Radcliffe Grant, did it really free you from the drudge of housework? And who is He? of the letters and Flight? Tell me how things are with you, with Maxine and George. Who do you see, know, now? I am bedded in the country with Frieda and a very fine 6 months son Nicholas, keeping bees and raising potatoes and doing broadcasts off and on for the BBC. I would love one of your newsy letters to stick on the wall. Let me know when and where I can see the new stuff you must have done since the book. More power to you, although you seem to need nothing - it is all there.
Love,
Sylvia"

Gemini Program: Lunar Flyby
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"American manned lunar flyby spacecraft. Study 1962. In the first Gemini project plans, it was planned that after a series of test dockings between Gemini and Agena rocket stages, Geminis would dock with Centaur stages for circumlunar flights."
This was a threat to Project Apollo and was suppressed.
Tumblr media
Gemini docked with Modified Transtage. A = Gemini spacecraft; B = Target Docking Adapter (TDA) support structure; C = external status display panel visible to Gemini crew; D = TDA docking cone; E = Gemini electrical umbilical and TDA receptacle; F = TDA transition structure; G = Modified Transtage.
At its birth Gemini was known as the Mercury Mark II program. NASA was already committed to the three-man Apollo spacecraft and considered Gemini an interim spacecraft to test rendezvous, docking, and EVA techniques before Apollo was available. But NASA's James Chamberlin and McDonnell Aircraft considered Gemini as a viable competitor to Apollo for the circumlunar and lunar landing missions. Such proposals might have been welcomed by the later 'cheaper, better, faster' NASA. But in 1961, as a direct challenge to the Apollo project and Lyndon Johnson's dream of a Southern High Technology Crescent, they were anathema.
Tumblr media
The original August 14, 1961 Mercury Mark II program plan went like this:
Date: Flight: Description
Mar 1963: Gemini 1: Unmanned orbital
May 1963 : Gemini 2: Manned orbital
Jul 1963 : Gemini 3: 7-day manned orbital
Sep 1963 : Gemini 4: 7-day manned orbital
Nov 1963 : Gemini 5: Agena docking
Jan 1964 : Gemini 6: 14-day primate orbital
Mar 1964 : Gemini 7: Agena docking
May 1964 : Gemini 8: 14-day primate orbital
Jul 1964 : Gemini 9: Agena docking
Sep 1964 : Gemini 10: Agena docking
Nov 1964 : Gemini 11: Centaur docking, boost to high Earth orbit
Jan 1965 : Gemini 12: Centaur docking, boost to high Earth orbit
Mar 1965 : Gemini 13: Centaur docking, boost to Lunar flyby
May 1965 : Gemini 14: Centaur docking, boost to Lunar flyby
The Centaur would be launched atop a Titan II booster. The lunar Gemini spacecraft would have weighed 3,170 kg, an extra 270 kg over the basic rendezvous Gemini. The difference consisted of a backup inertial navigator and additional heat shielding for re-entry at 11 km/sec instead of 8 km/sec. This program was estimated to put an American around the moon for only $ 60 million more than the basic $ 356 million program. An even more aggressive alternative, a nine-flight program, was promised to cost only $ 8.5 million more than the basic program and fly around the moon in May 1964! This first attempt to fly Gemini to the moon was quickly suppressed, and a revision of the plan was issued only a week later, with all mention of lunar flights deleted."

A weather-beaten Titan IIIC transtage with a conical payload fairing arrives at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in 2016. The old upper stage, destined for analysis by NASA orbital debris scientists, was transferred to NASA JSC after it was spotted in the aircraft "boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona.

Uncle Felix
where have you taken us?
i don't remember the road looking this dark
Uncle Felix?
when are we going home?
UNCLE FELIX
WHERE HAVE YOU TAKEN US, I DON'T THINK THIS IS OUR HOME AT ALL
WHAT HAPPENED TO US, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CAR
ARE WE OKAY? WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU, FELIX?
[2]
are you okay, Uncle? was it the bottle?
what happened to you? how did you get like this?
are we home yet?
WHAT WERE YOU DRINKING? UNCLE FELIX?
ARE YOU DOING ALRIGHT? WHY ARE YOU EVEN DRINKING?
ARE WE HOME YET?
Tumblr media
[3]
Uncle Felix, what have you done now?
What happened to us? Please tell us, are we DEAD?
It's all your fault, oh Uncle Felix
Maybe it's because of what you were drinking
Uncle Felix, what happened to us all?
The answer wears a pair of glasses and a blue suit
It's all your fault, oh Uncle Felix
You are at the center of everything in BON'S BURGERS
[4]
WHY
We were young, 8 and 11, we died far away from our dreams
WHY
UNCLE WHY
ARE WE HOME YET?
[5]
OH UNCLE FELIX, LOOK WHERE YOU'RE STANDING RIGHT NOW
oh Uncle Felix, when are we going home?
i already miss mommy
UNCLE FELIX, YOU DROVE TOO FAST
When are we going home, when do we see our parents?
Uncle Felix, you were driving too fast while dizzy
[6]
Oh Uncle, where have you taken us now
Where are we, Uncle? I smell something burning
Is it the car? I bet it's the car, i bet we're burning right now
It's all your fault, oh Uncle Felix
You are at the center of everything in BON'S BURGERS
[7]
Uncle Felix
What happened
What happened to us? Are we alright?
No we're not, you killed us both in the car
FELIX
WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS
UNCLE
ARE WE HOME–
