This is for the countless Damon dick riders.

He was an awful person.

He abused, killed and destroyed so many people's lives. Obviously others did to but I'm not sitting here defending they're actions the same way Damon defenders do.

When Stefan was with Elena he was constantly trying to be with her and was flirting with Elena knowing that Stefan was happiest with her than he probably ever was in his entire life.

He murdered Lexi, abused Caroline, killed Aaron for no reason other than to stick it up to "Elena" (who yes was actually Katherine at the time, I'm aware) cuz she broke up with him.

Klaus did horrible things like Damon but Damon wasn't abused AND hunted by his father is entire life but I understand the similarities as to why people compare them when I say I dislike Damon. Such as an abusive father, abandonment issues and complicated relationships with siblings.

I can sympathize with Damon from the amounts he suffered at the hands of his parents, being turned into a vampire against his will and the Whitmore family torturing him in horrific ways but in say that. Damon a Stefan had the same parents while I understand Stefan wasn't abused the same way Damon was people do not understand what it's like seeing someone you love being abused and being unable to do anything about it.

Also people forget that 99% of vampires were turned against they're will for example Stefan. I completely understand when Stefan turned Damon. Who the fuck wants to be alone for eternity after they're lover dies (Katherine and this applies to Damon too).

I 100% believe Damon would of turned Stefan if it was the other way around for the same reasons. Him wanting to turn Elena and Stefan turning Damon have a lot of things in common.

Y'all need to realise you're allowed to sympathize with a character while also being able to dislike them for the inexcusable things they do. Being abused is not an excuse for hurting others. We see examples of this in everyday like of good people staying good people despite the awful things that happen to them.

Obviously no character is perfect but with the amount of people defending characters like Damon to extreme extents is concerning and disappointing.

The way you view fiction characters and fictional situations is a reflection as what you believe irl and I'm sick of people pretending you can completely separate the two.

Single Dad!König (Dream Daddy au)

(+ a bit of Ghost under the cut)

Thank you to everyone who indulged (said exactly what I asked them to say 😅) me.

Here’s the paragraph I wrote:

I imagine his heart sinking when Ava comes home sad and quiet, unwilling to look her dad in the eye. He recognizes what that means: that used to be him as a kid. His worst fears are confirmed when Ava admits she's being harassed by a boy at school, replaced by anger when Ava says her teachers simply shrugged and told her that boys will be boys, and has she considered that maybe he just has a crush on her? Needless to say, by the time König's walking out of that school, nobody will ever be hurting his little girl ever again. Honestly, one glimpse of Ava's dad by her classmates will keep her free from bullying for the rest of her life.

Now here’s a bit more about single dad König, namely, how he came to be a dad…and single :( Angst and death tw ahead (nothing graphic)

With Ghost, I said he would only have had Caden due to an accident, because of Simon’s previous trauma involving his family. He was firmly in the mindset that he would die in the field, he’s just not built for civilian life anymore, he's a danger to everyone who loves him. However, when Caden shows up at his doorstep, all he can think about is Tommy and his nephew Joseph when he looks at the boy. He probably does his best to get Caden sent to a different family member, but let’s suspend our disbelief that any responsible social worker would leave a kid with Simon “Ghost” Riley for a moment and say that the social worker is like “It’s you or the foster care system.” Realistically, Simon would probably be like “foster care is safer than living with me” but for the purposes of the AU, he took the kid in.

With König, he doesn’t have the same trauma/hangups regarding kids and family. He’s in the same boat as Simon: he’s a human weapon, and can’t function properly in civilian life. For König, his work is an outlet and keeps him stable. I’m gonna have to sit down and make a proper post about my König’s character (Alexander), but for my König, violence is a method of regulating his emotions and a way to manage his anxiety. Having power and being hyper competent in the field is key to his mental stability. However, I think he would be able to settle down, it would just take a very patient, special woman. (For the purposes of the AU his first partner is AFAB she/her.) Here’s where I start breaking hearts… 🤭

In Dream Daddy au, König considers his first wife the love of his life. She deeply understood him as a person and wasn’t afraid of him, even when he was socially awkward and intimidating. They were honestly kindred spirits: both of them had their neuroses and flaws, but instead of trying to fix each other or mold the other into some ideal partner, they accepted each other and thus were able to grow together. (And tbh they were already a match made in heaven anyway.) König’s wife never asked him to quit, and was completely ready to raise a child with him frequently being gone. She was a badass woman, and she really, really wanted to start a family with him, so they had Ava.

For three years, König was probably the happiest he’s been in a long time, and if you asked him he’d probably say it was the happiest time in his life. He was moving up the ranks at work, his mental health was in check, and he had a wife and adorable little daughter to go home to every leave. He started planning to transfer to a safer/more stable position, because as much as the military has done for him, he’s ready to step up as a father and a husband. Then he gets a call that changes his life forever, and suddenly he doesn’t get a choice anymore.

(I'm eternally sorry to the little fictional people I made up in my head because I entertained the idea of putting the Brooklyn 99 "Guess who got murdered!" gif here...)

One thing y'all need to know about my man Alexander is that he is the embodiment of "I am not meant for casual. I was born for soul-crushing devotion." His problem is that he never had devotion before his wife: he craved it like a starving man, and it engulfed him like water flowing into a basin when he got it. He had it for a handful of years (I'm thinking 6 but that's a flexible number), and now it's gone again. You know in movies when something horrible happens and they cut all the noise and there's just a high pitched ringing sound? That's König getting that phone call.

God. All I can imagine is König dropping everything and taking the next flight home. He’s in a daze, in a way that he’s never quite been before. His mind is finally quiet, but the emptiness is not peaceful. Then he finally sees his little girl, she runs into his arms, and the dam bursts. He just holds her and cries. He’s numb, a dead man walking throughout all the business that needs to be taken care of after his wife’s death. The only thing that brings him back to the land of the living is Ava. She’s so small, so sweet, and she doesn’t really understand what death means: all she knows is that her mama’s gone somewhere, and her dad is so, so sad all the time. She’s all that keeps him going, and the only reason he keeps himself alive.

By the time you come into his life, it’s been several years, but Ava is still a little girl. She doesn’t remember her mother at all except what König tells and shows her, because he’s determined to keep her memory alive. König’s been slowly rebuilding who he is as a person from whatever scraps are left. There’s a gaping hole inside him, and he’s reconstructed himself around the hole. In some ways he’s a totally new man, in other ways, he’s gone back to who he was before his wife came along. He’s bitter and angry at the way his life has treated him just as he was as a young man, but now he’s swallowed up by guilt and self loathing. He's gotten better at coping and functioning as the years have passed and life has continued on, but his grief has never really gone away.

prompt: your relationship was picture perfect. you're happy and in love but one crime scene brings your love crashing down around you. (I'm not good at descriptions)

You knew you would never escape this feeling.

The chills that ran down your spine as you walked through the scene, the only sounds being camera shutters and shuffling footsteps of your team, the way the air was suspended around you, imitating the way you held your breath. You forced your emotions into a box and shoved it to the back of your mind, your eyes turning from sympathetic to analytical, necessary for your job. The only one who noticed the change was your Crime Scene Photographer, Darcy. She pursed her lips at you, tilting her head towards the bedroom, acknowledging your shift into your role of head CSI.

This scene was different than the others, you immediately noticed as you crossed the bedroom threshold. Blood took over the wallpaper, staining the costly vintage pattern. The body lay face down on the bed, stab marks on the back, mostly shallow and jagged, indicating a struggle had occurred. Your thoughts were proven as your eyes scanned over the blood spatter. This victim fought back, causing a fight your killer hadn't anticipated.

She was the tenth one this month, the bodies being found more and more frequently, the killer getting more confident.

"Y/N."

Your name sounded behind you, making you turn around. Lead Detective Jimmy Woo stood with a grimace on his face, eyes expectant. You nodded as you brought him over to the side of the bed, where you could see the wounds better.

"This one is different, Jim. The scene is a mess, the body mutilated and uncharacteristically stabbed, not to mention the lack of sophistication."

You turned from the bed and walked over to a pile of cleaning supplies, crouching down and cocking your head to the side. Your eyes widened when you noticed what had caught your eye. Pulling out your tweezers from your toolkit hanging by your side, you called out to Jimmy, asking for an evidence bag. As he handed it to you, he asked an important question.

"Then how can we be sure it's the same killer."

Without hesitating you answered.

"The victim fits the profile. A woman in her early to mid 50s, lives alone, estranged from family," you nodded your head to the dusty photographs on the dresser, now decorated by dried drops of blood, "and the cleaning supplies, the same ones we know for a fact were used at the other scenes."

As you bagged the strand of hair, your mind thought back to the other crime scenes. The bodies of the victims lying in bed, dead for days or weeks at the longest, the rooms cleaned meticulously, the only mess being the crusty blood stains from the single slit mark on the women's neck. You thought that those scenes were the worst, but now as you looked around, you knew you hadn't seen the worst of humanity yet.

Handing Jimmy the evidence bag, which he passed on to the officers on the scene, you stood up.

"Forensics is done here, all pictures taken, swabs done, and now all evidence is bagged. Help me roll the body over."

Your plastic gloves were already soaked with blood as you and Jimmy rolled the victim onto her back. Jimmy choked on what he saw. You merely sighed. The slit on the victims neck was jagged but shallow. The scene played out in your head. The killer did the normal business of coming from behind with the knife, but this one struggled, making the cut not deep enough to kill. The killer pushed the woman onto the bed, trying to suffocate her with the pillow but she kept struggling. Finally, the killer resorted to stabbing the woman until the act was finished, even some post-mortem. Then, instead of having time to clean the scene and position the body, something unexpected happened. Someone visited the victim, the young next door neighbor who felt sorry for the elderly woman who never saw her family. The killer had to rush out the back, leaving countless pieces of evidence behind and ruining weeks of planning.

"Let's get her in a bag, make sure to contact the family and ask for her will and wishes upon her death."

On the drive back to the station and your team's lab, you allowed yourself a moment to text your wife.

You: Hey hon, I don't think I'll make it for dinner. I might stay the night.

You let yourself slip information, a breach of protocol but you trusted Agatha.

We finally have enough to catch this bastard.

The sounds of reporters never stopped as the hours passed, your team logging and entering every piece of evidence from this scene and past. You ran every single strand of DNA evidence you had through every database you had legal access to. Monica Rambeau, your secret weapon when it came to, well, weapons, made multiple 3D replicas of the suspects height and body weight, using the angles of the blood spatter and the stab wounds. You and your team had discovered a separate blood profile in the mix, a break that had you desperate for a culprit. Now you sat in front of the equipment in your lab, the rest of your team resting while evidence was being processed and while the detective went over profiles and case reports, looking for details they might've missed.

You kept yourself from drifting into sleep by scrolling on your phone. When you opened your messages, your brow scrunched together. Agatha hadn't responded to your text, leaving it delivered. Frowning, you started typing but realizing the time, you thought she would be sleeping. Maybe you missing dinner tonight had struck a nerve with your wife. Sighing, you slumped in your chair, practicing your apology in your head. You knew it wasn't common of you to miss dinner, so maybe she had something special planned for tonight, even if it was nowhere near one of your birthdays or an anniversary. But that didn't mean anything, maybe it was a surprise date night. You were so lost in your worry, you almost didn't hear the ping from your computer indicating a match. You read the results, a hint of surprise at the determined sex of the killer. You started to type some notes in an email for Jimmy when your computer indicated it had found an 94% DNA match in a database. You paused, your hands still hovering over your keyboard as the killer's picture came up on your screen.

Time suspended around you, suffocating you as your vision tunneled. The buzzing of your phone broke you out of your stupor and with shaking hands you opened the message from your wife.

Your eyes flickered from the text to the picture on your screen, your wife's cold blue eyes staring into your soul. You hesitated before you answered.

You: not well. everything came up a dead end, ig it's back to square one.

You put your phone face down on your desk, quickly exiting out of the page, your wife's picture replaced with your background. Which did nothing to sooth your rapidly panicking state, as it was your wedding photo. You slammed the power button, relief flooding your body at the black screen. With shaky hands, you cradled your head.

This can not be happening. You thought, pinching your arms, desperate to wake up from this vivid nightmare.

You stood up suddenly, your chair crashing behind you. Darcy rushed in, concern lacing her actions.

"I have a migraine. Staring at a screen for too long and all that." You cut her off, even giving a slight chuckle at the end to play it off. Darcy still looked concerned but let you gather your things and walk out of the lab.

"If anything comes up, I'll call you!" she called out, not knowing her words caused your stomach to hardened.

As you went to walk out of the station, you noticed Jimmy had recklessly left his gun and holster on his desk.

You walked out of the station, pulling your jacket tight against your body as you got into your car.

No one had noticed Jimmy's gun was no longer on his desk.

Merlin Loregasm Rewatch S1E2

Hi Everyone! Welcome to my rewatch of Merlin focusing on the lore. I am a giant nerd so pretty excited about this. Time for VALIANT!

So this brings up heraldry in the series. We see Arthur using Camelot heradlry, and other knights doing the same but during tourneys, we see Lots of different other patterned shields. So either people usually use the shield of their overlord in battle but their own in tourneys Or no knights of Camelot besides Arthur appear in tourneys. (I think Lancelot will make this a bit clearer when we get to it.) Either way either this is Valient's family crest, or he serves someone with a family crest. Either way it makes sense for why he murders this dude. As the shield is KINDA a dead giveaway to his identity. (And we know he is a knight or at least is acting as one and pulls it off better then Merlin's later first attempt at identity theft.) They obviously do not require patents of nobility at tourneys because Gwen, Arthur and Merlin pull off a fictional Knight later just fine.

I think he is likely a knight because ARMOR IS EXPENSIVE Y'ALL.

He also says he is from the Western Illes. Because the island of Mora And Ealdor this is the first place we hear about besides Camalot. Does he mean Ireland? I think he means Ireland? ALSO! are you used to my messed up grammar and punctuation yet? I have an LD in both. This is why I always need Betas for my fics despite creative writing being my thing. (I mean besides just wanting them to be better.) (This is an example of autistic oversharing. You are welcome! BACK TO MERLIN!)

So we only see this kinda sparing with Merlin in armor and holding a sword and shield once. (Usually he just holds a target for arthur) However, Merlin does get better with a sword somewhat as the series progresses so I think it likly continues. (Though perhaps a bit more nicely) It's interesting because Arthur has his pick of people to spar with, we see that later. Yet he says "Most Servants collapse after the first blow" So who is he sparing with? Has he been given manservants he didn't like before and just used this to make them quit? ANYHOO this was not as much lore so will not often comment on character dynamics but yesh.

Okay so I will spare you the talk of different armor parts. BUT this is really interesting compared to mentions of "Camalot forged steel"

See many Castles would have their own blacksmith and the one in the villager would be more for horseshoes, nails, and the like. Because armor and weapon making was A BIG DEAL

This implies Gwen's father was a HIGHLY SKILLED blacksmith who likely served the knights of Camalot. (He can't have been the only one because when he dies there is a period of time before Elyan comes and in Gwen's words Gets the forge running again.) But for a regular blacksmith to serve as an armor and weapon maker is a BIG DEAL that kinda knowledge was highly specialized! And yet Uther killed him easily.

OKAY time to nerd out a bit! This is quartering, an advanced heraldic tradition in which an individual for some reason or another wanted to show MORE than one coat of arms they were entitled to. You guys should look all this up, its fascinating! But onward!

Okay yeah remember what I said about Gwens family likely descending back to the Roman times? It's still possible but if Arab knight equivalents can get to Camelot then her family could totally have come from northern Africa for other reasons. Also I like the dude in Mauve having an Anglo-Saxon Helm and the due behind him having one from the 1100s I love Merlin's stew of things from all over history.

Okay this is perhaps just Uther being an ass. Because I'm sorry if you are not the king of Mercia I refuse to belive you are the king of Ireland. (Albion is not united yet.)

Perhaps its mostly knights of Camalot here with some exeptions? I mean if we are creative with the dude CLEARLY of the middle east we can say somehow became a noble of camalot. It would explain a few things. Did Valiant come from Ireland (Sorry I mean The Western Illes) originally then somehow for reasons we will not question also moved to Camalot? (Unlikely as Uther asks him to stay later.) There are also very few people here so likley perliminary tournaments were held? I mean we do see in Lancelot people come from all over to try to be knights of Camalot. so THEORETICLY Uther might be being honest here?

Okay this guys helm is the same as the Arab dude we saw before I think he just took his outher coat off. BUT And some of this gear is very European. So Camalot somehow has an Arab noble family that fights in ancestral gear when they can OR he got repairs along the long journey to Camalot in local styles. Take your pick!)

Something to note! This would normally be the job for a Squire. A Squire was also usually the step before knighthood but in the Merlin world they do not seem to exist!

As I mentioned before, I do take requests! Now I do wanna start this off by saying:

I consider myself an ORIGINAL AUTHOR. I mostly write ORIGINAL WORKS. Though those take quite a long time to come out and sometimes I want to write but not focus on larger, original projects- so I take REQUESTS and write MY OWN fanfictions, but those are LOW on the priority list. Ever since I became both a proship and lolishocon for I think two years, I can say it's been the best. I can literally draw or write whatever I please because it's fiction yes I was kinda like an anti when I first started twitter around 2021 I used had a mindset of this whole ' mortality ' thing where I remember I say:" that fictional child!! " Something like that how I was scared to retweet fanartist's drawing anime minors in such a lewd way. The more I was on twitter, I slowly realized how antis would normalize this disgusted behavior like harassing, telling others to off themselves or doxxed and straight up act more crazy and constantly calling themselves as " normal ".

As an autistic woman, I always get so speechless and overwhelmed by the amount of times, I've seen antis used photo of children vs lolis debates and how they would say:" they look the same. "

News flash you're a fucking weirdo if you used photos of CHILDREN when you're arguing about a 2D fictional characters.😮‍💨😮‍💨

Hugh is delighted to spend his first ever Thanksgiving in his new home in America along with her bride of a few short months. He is grateful to have survived being shot and able to see his dreams of becoming a lawyer for the people unable to afford legal counsel and of course, marrying the lady who stole his heart and helped him accomplish this long held dream. He's also thankful his in-laws have helped him find some wealthy clients willing to pay him exorbitant fees so he can easily help the less fortunate.

Catherine is thankful to not only have Hugh by her side, but also in having brought peace for both herself and the Somerset family in solving the mystery around her sister, Amelia, murder. Though this is the first holiday spent without her beloved sister, she is grateful on not only having her true love with her to help her through it, but in also having the friends she made in England coming this evening for dinner. Her heart is both heavy without Amelia and near to bursting over the new loves and relationships in her life.

As for me, I'm thankful for my family, both those still in my life and for the memories of those we've lost over the years. Each dish I'm making brings a smile knowing whose favorite it is or was. I'm so thankful to be finally unpacked and settled in our new home and city (and that I can find my way around pretty good without getting lost now 🤣) I'm thankful for the continuous laughter my husband and sons cause on a daily basis. I'm also grateful for the friends I have made here and our fandom community putting up with my sad attempts at fan fiction 😂 You are all the best ❤️❣️

Fiction is about conflict, drama and mistakes and the reasons and consequences behind human behavior. People make the mistake of conflating enjoying art with agreeing with what it depicts and that’s just not how consuming media works. I like hurt/comfort fanfic, but that doesn’t mean I want to see my partner beaten up. I really enjoy Hannibal, but that doesn’t mean I approve of cannibalism. What we read, watch, write or ship doesn’t reflect our character. If that were true, Stephen King and George R. R. Martin should both be in prison, and every fan of Die Hard would be on a watchlist. We enjoy stories because they take us outside of ourselves, into adventures we could never have and into the minds of people we could never be. That’s art. And while it’s always important to be critical and thoughtful about how and why we enjoy something, that should never keep you from liking what you like. And it certainly doesn’t make you a bad person.

anyways, yes it does reflect your character. in certain cases, fiction affects or is a reflection of reality. in this case, it shows that you let pretty privilege win when it comes to seeing red flags in people. it shows what you are literally willing to ignore. You cannot go and say this when you know damn well your attitude towards billy would change if any of these actors played him:

If the face of Billy wasn't some beauty standard pretty boy, y'all would not go this far. Y'all would say things like "he's ugly AND abusive, yikes"

Also everything you mentioned literally does reflect character 💀 it doesn't mean those people are psychos, or how ever extreme you may think, but it does mean that they created "art" with a reflection of how they feel about those topics in those books, movies, and shows.

Art is an extension of the artists feelings and/or mind. Tell me you're not an artist without telling me you're not and artist.

The bad guy portrayed, the good guy portrayed, the plot, the best friends, the character design, the setting even, ect are all reflections of how the creator feels about the topic being brought up, or their values on good, evil, love, hate ect including MEMORIES, which idk if you knew this, BUT ARE A REFLECTION OF A PERSON.

Hannibal kills and eats people he typically hates (like pedophiles) which is most likely a reflection of the creators own hate for pedophiles, and reflection on their views.

Hurt/comfort reflects peoples trauma. Sometimes the creators, and other times something the creator observed. Sometimes, something the creator desires. Ex: they wish to "save" someone and be there for them

Stephen King writes about murder on one hand, and friendship/ family on the other in a "which will pull through" type of way. "Which one is stronger" type of way, which reflects how he feels at the end of the day and how he views horror too.

George RR is famous for GOT, which is straight up about power struggles. This also reflects his character by showing his view on what is basically power politics. How not all the good guys will be in favor. How loss is inevitable in the batte for victory, and that doesn't mean you should essentially "abandon all hope". This is a reflection of what he believes in.

Also, people mainly like die hard for ACTION, which is a reflection of their character because it shows that they are a person who is/wants to be a daredevil, hero, tough guy, ect. if they liked watching people get murdered, that's completely different, but guess what? It's also a REFLECTION OF THEIR CHARACTER.

so you are wrong wrong wrong over and over again. "IT cErtAinLy DoEsnT maKe YoU a BaD pErSon" but it does REFLECT WHO YOU ARE as a person when you like someone as problematic and harmful as Billy.

✨Path of Stars - What character needs more love?

I have to say Frostpaw's littermates, Mistpaw and Graypaw. I've seen someone recently point out that Frostpaw's extended family are shaping up to be important players in the RiverClan plot: her mom Curlfeather got that death at the end of River and uttered her cryptic "Trust no cat", her grandma Duskfur seems like she's up to something, her uncle Owlnose had his brief stint as RiverClan's ineffectual leader, and so on. So it is a little weird to me how little we've gotten on her brother and sister. They certainly are getting a better deal than most other background extras, they showed up in Sky with some regularity, but if this murder mystery is going to involve the whole family I feel like they need to be fleshed out more. Yet another reason for me to root for them becoming developed characters eventually.

🍃The Apprentices Quest - Do we need StarClan?

Do the Clans need StarClan? At this point I honestly sometimes think they'd be better off weaning themselves off the clingy ghosts and start over with their society. But as a reader I do think they're a big part of the series' identity. I'd want them to have both a more subdued and more prominent presence in the seires. I want them to meddle less and for us to look into the goings on of them less often (abolish StarClan prologues!), but at the same time I want to see the religion play a bigger role in day to day life for Clan cats. I want to see more of a window into religious practices, I want it to feel more important to them in the mundanities of religiosity. Something like Garry Kilworth did in his book The Foxes of Firstdark, do y'all remember when I live read it right here on the blog?

��Lost Stars - Favourite character + why

Jayfeather! I have many reasons to like him. For one I'm attracted to the asshole with a chip on their shoulder archetype. I find his perspective to be interesting to read about. He has interesting family relationships, particularly to his siblings which captivates me as someone obsessed with sibling dynamics in fiction. He represents a really interesting writing challenge with all the myriad readily apparent flaws in how his story was handled. And above all he just captures my imagination. That's ultimately what it comes down to, he's my favorite because I enjoy spending time reading and thinking and talking about him the most.

☁️A Light in the Mist - You can rewrite the warrior code- what do you change?

I think the code is mostly fine as-is even if certain provisions strike me as too friendly. I'd like the Clans to remain antagonistic to one another for the sake of the continued drama. Collaboration and cooperation are fine to a point but if they're drifting to a more peaceable status quo it begins to feel pointless you know? But the biggest code I'd implement would be rather than a clearly ennunciated numbered list, the code should be vaguer, certain principles of it agreed upon all clans but disparately interpreted and applied across the four clans.

I think we're due a soft reboot and that would be a fantastic opportunity for implementing the StarClan and warrior code changes. Fast forward us to a point all currently alive characters have died. Give us a fresh cast. Worldbuild the future clans from the ground up and you've got a perfect place to start fresh. A clean slate will also let them avoid digging their grave further regarding certain controversial elements such as the tangled family tree or the writers parading the corpses of formerly beloved characters who've outstayed their welcome. I just think it's a neat idea.

TW: Drugs, substance abuse, murder, violence, the Punisher

Another potentially unpopular opinion I've seen on here (and one that I'll actually rant about) is that, Jason is the only good vigilante in the Batfam because he kills people (think the direct quote is "unlike those other feckless bitches" and something like "when you get saved by Red Hood, you know that you'll never have to worry about getting attacked by the same person again". I don't know how to explain to people that killing the type of criminals Jason killed in canon is wrong and harmful (thinking about the 80 Blackgate prisoners he poisoned - hmm you know the American prison system is pretty fucked up i'm sure they all totally belonged there /s). Like. Jason killing the Joker is one thing, but he literally hasn't killed the Joker - Dick did that, Bruce tried to, but Jason hasn't. But like some people make it out like oh, Jason being a killer is fine because he only kills people that deserve it - who, tell me who he's killing? Sex offenders and drug dealers seems to be the most common reply. And I won't touch the sex offenders but drug dealers? Have you heard of the War on Drugs? Have you seen what happens when people in power decide it's okay to openly promote the killing of drug dealers? I don't understand why people think it's fine for Jason Todd to go around killing drug dealers, as if they don't have families, don't have other things that put them in a bad situation. There's a reason why cops in the US (idk if they do this elsewhere) use the Punisher skull as their emblem - and if you advocate for a Jason Todd that punishes criminals, don't be surprised when the right wing weaponizes him against minorities and the red hood helmet starts to get painted on cop cars.

I wrote a paper on the Norwegian prison system which rehabilitates and releases even the "worst" of criminals and just... I live in the US and it seems like we (specifically white people) have such little compassion for anyone who commits crime. Even after the War on Drugs, even after we learned it was a scam, people fall for the crime and punishment rhetoric time after time. Like I live in a suburb where people are so scared of drug dealers my mom literally called our neighbor because someone cut through our yard (and she thought he looked high or something idk). Which I get it, my cousin died from a fentanyl overdose, I understand you don't want that near your kids. But incarcerating or killing drug dealers is not the answer, and I can't stand it when people take that stance on Jason. You can try to explain the 8 drug dealer heads in a duffle bag any way you want, but at the end of the day, I think the batfamily fandom needs to be more careful addressing this issue because demonizing drugs/drug dealers/drug users is literally one of the ways the American government destroys black communities.

And to think, the Jason Todd stan that this opinion came from replied to me because I commented on how Jason likes to run around in Dick's old clothes - something that has absolutely no bearing on his morals, other than he's thrifty which is a good thing actually, something like 85% of clothes ends up in landfills. Sorry for the rant, you asked for it. Sorry if anyone who sees this likes Jason Todd and is offended, you're not bad for liking him, he has an interesting story, just please don't advocate for murdering common criminals, specifically drug dealers.

sorry it's late and fucking hot I don't have the most comprehensive reply dbdnhd and I do acknowledge that at the end of the day this is fiction but opinions real people hold come from SOMEWHERE - and I think we have a very ingrained belief that crime/bad deed has to be punished and that there are good and evil people and good people only do bad things when influenced by evil people which is exactly the core of jason's belief - and that's interesting for a batfam character, a former robin!! I like when him and bruce are contrasted based on ethics but I don't like when it's meant to show that jason is right and bruce is wrong

batman is an extremely popular and fascinating character because at his core lies the idea that systems that are in place to 'protect' people are corrupt and it's down to individuals who can do something to go against them and look out for others - that's something that will resonate with people even if irl solution can't be to dress up as a bat and beat tf outta people shdhhshs

I have two points to make here:

a) I'm straight up a fucking anarchist who lives in the woods, thinks aliens are listening, and doesn't trust the government but I don't believe systems are corrupt, I believe they operate the way they are meant to operate to punish and control the populations that the system needs to be controlled to keep up the status quo - war on drugs is such a good example for that. drug dealer also exists as this boogeyman, this idea of an evil person waiting to corrupt and destroy the good people but the fact is: people don't get addicted to drugs bc drug dealers exist, people get addicted to drugs because something, not someone, compels them to do drugs, because something (literal us gov) introduced drugs to their communities and drug dealers are just tiny pawns in that game. additionally, many dealers are addicts themselves who got roped into selling to pay for their own use or who got pushed into the margins of society so much that drug trade is the only way to survive they can find

there are like, whole papers and books and thesis done on this so I'm not gonna act like I can analyse it in a tumblr post dhshsjsj but yeah people who think jason is right usually show this weird superiority of 'oh batman doesnt get how to fix gotham like jason does' and like... no, jason gets played like a fiddle by the system the way people he kills do, and whatever he does will always just hit the other pawns and never reach those actually at the top, those who are profitting from finding scapegoats

i finished 13 storeys by acclaimed novelist jonathan "jonny" "not the archivist or the pirate cowboy" sims and i LOVED it! haunting! powerful! the very first thing i did was get a free trial from an overpriced listening service, download the audiobook, and unsubscribe again. and then i put it on immediately to relisten, so the foreshadowing could murder me to death! which it did! just revisiting the prologue wiped me from the face of the earth. god bless.

i really loved 13 storeys so much, y'all. i wish so very very bad that the most pressing and foremost comment i have to make on it were not the one (1) thing in the book i actively hated. but here we are.

in this book once more, we contend with jonny "bad with names" "8 separate michaels" "doesnt know what namesakes are" "the baby name website said jurgen was norwegian" sims. he refers to leon's wife, andi, as "angela". twice! surely this is part of leon's haunting, i thought, brain ghosts making him mix up his own wife's name. nope! not a spooky thing! jonnys just THAT bad at names!

that's whatever. the genuine fuckin problem comes when he gives two brazilian, portuguese-speaking brothers 3 names total, and the forms/spellings of these names are from 3 separate languages, none of which is portuguese.

i wish i could have thought about anything else during the audio chapter from jésus [french] candido's [italian] point of view, but it was pretty fuckin hard considering folks getting jésus's name wrong is discussed in the text. in the written version, when it is mispronounced it is spelled without the accent mark, which is really clever! (or, would be clever, except the portuguese form of the name is in fact jesus, no accent mark.)

the voice actor reads the other characters' mispronunciation of the name as 'jesus' like 'of nazareth', at least how anglophones say it. which is fine! too bad he also uses this mispronunciation in the NARRATION. from jésus's point of view. referring to HIMSELF. TWICE. not to mention all of this is assuming his regular pronunciation of the name is even anything in the first place, which it may not be, considering it's the wrong form.

i don't want to lay the blame squarely on the VA, who speaks 6 languages--english non-natively, by the sound of it. because seriously, who was directing this? did nobody proof-listen? why did he say courier in both the english and the french way, and why did he say his fucking name wrong?? twice?? it's really fucking careless from an author who includes folks of many varying backgrounds (in this book particularly) and seemingly takes great pains not to be callous about it otherwise.

p.s. don't go thermian on this. yes, many irl latine families use forms and spellings from different languages than their own, especially when the difference comes down to an accent mark. that's absolutely fine and a valid, real experience! it is also completely irrelevant to a white man choosing 3 names for two fictional characters and getting the form/spelling wrong on all of them. he could have used google. he should have used google.

Okay who's ready for some trigger warnings? Because--Oh boy!-- does this book need them. Triggers for: Rape, domestic abuse, foot binding, sexism, misogyny, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, murder, physical abuse, alcoholism, substance abuse, gaslighting, parental abuse, spousal abuse, major character death (I mean...*points to the blurb*), and more I've probably missed. Please make sure you're in a good place before reading this.

But they're good spoilers. The kind that will likely be important to potential readers.

Now that I've gotten the warnings out of the way, I need to gush about this book. It's so freaking good, y'all. Like seriously good. Like I want all the fanfic for it now.

First off, it's a novel written by a queer Author of Color @xiranjayzhao​. You might know them for some of their other online things. But this is their debut and it is faboo.

We totally need more of this. Seriously, we need more of this. Additionally, I'm happy to see a book that is rooted in Chinese culture and mythology playing with so many tropes.

I absolutely adored how this book flipped a lot of tropes on their ears while at the same time playing a lot of them straight. This book read like a fanfic, but that is not a bad thing. Fanfic is not a bad word. Fanfic is an incredibly popular and influential type of derivative fiction that is produced by fans for fans. So when I say that the book reads like a fanfic, it’s a compliment. It means that the book was readable and could appeal to an audience who wants something familiar while also having their alternate universes.

Because that's what this is. An AU of Chinese history and mythology with sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal elements. If you like that kind of thing, you will love this. This is the kind of book that readers of the Hunger Games will love. Seriously. I got so many Hunger Games vibes from this, and I loved it.

This is also a YA fantasy novel that contra to what is typical in the genre goes "Nope! No love triangles for you! We're going to have some healthy polyamory." and I am 100000000% here for it. Like seriously... no more love triangles... give me polyamory instead. And it's an equal triad. Squeeeeeeeeee!

Like seriously.

Readers do need to note that there are closed door sex scenes. What that means is that there is implied sex on the page but nothing is shown. There's some kissing and heavy petting, but that's about it. Nothing too explicit. And nothing that would take this out of YA.

So let's talk characters. Zeitan has a very Katniss feel to her. She's protective of her family to a point. But moreso she's protective of those that she's deemed as innocent and those who have been wronged by the system. She starts out as focused on only one goal -- kill the man who killed her sister. And when she succeeds, she discovers a new goal -- save the women who are sacrificed/murdered by a system that chews them up and spits them out like cherry pits. She's strong, but she's also flawed. She's powerful... but she also has bound feet so cannot fight physically. She is a disabled heroine who kicks butt and takes names. And she's also human. Her family doesn’t value her, but they want her to value her family. It’s something that is common in a lot of cultures not just Chinese ones. Part of her growth is learning to value herself for herself and not just as an exentsion of others. Her character growth is grea,t and I am here for it.

Then there are the love interests. The first is Yizhi: a rich, scholarly boy from the capital. He's very much a beta hero. The kind of guy who is safe. Gentle. He's a good doobie who is willing to let Zeitan take the lead.

Then there's Shimin. He's darker. An addict. He's your brooding YA hero. with a twist. He's closer to the alpha male archetype but also not fully there. He lets Zeitan take the lead as well when it comes to their relationship. He’s not going to force himself on her and he’s got some of my favorite lines in the whole book. I also love him because he owns his mistakes. He knows he's got blood on his hands and that he has to atone for it. He's like a mix of Gale Hawthorne meets Han Solo. I loved him. I loved them both.

There's a lot of heavy and difficult themes in this book. But I never felt that things got too heavy-handed. The story is compelling and it's definitely got reread value. It's the kind of book that makes you think while being entertaining.

As a note, the book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. A very Empire Strikes Back cliffhanger. Which seems to be the norm for YA duologies nowadays. But it is something people need to be aware of.

Honestly, I feel like this is book for everyone.I loved it. It was fun. I loved the themes. I loved the characters. I literally gasped outloud at one point in the plot.

So of course I'm going to give this...

He's fascinating to me and ngl I find it really upsetting to see the way people talk about him

Granted, he is a fictional character and I am not him (so me being upset about this is kinda weird), so what's the big deal?

My disappointment is often aimed at the. . . Interesting takes regarding his character.

For starters, as its a common one, the notion that Iida would say slurs (racial, homophobic, etc)

This is really weird to me bc he never has? Like, yeah he has a rich family and whatever, but he's shown to be extremely respectful and actively work on bettering himself (Sidenote, we would probably never know anyway bc there isn't much representation and Iida isn't the main character). I'll touch on this more in a sec, but know this trait of his is present in more than just this scenario. Like, when Ochako explained her reason for being a hero, he applauds her. Really let that sink in for a second. He, bourgeoisie Sonic, applauded her for her noble cause. As someone who also has a deep love of Ochako, I fucking wept. I won't go into detail for personal reasons, but I'm much like her in that way. So hearing someone validate that is nice ^^

Second point! The whole "Strict Annoying Shouty Boi™"

Most people joke when it comes to this but some people will actually mean it, so yeah. Yes, I'm aware that murder is bad. However as someone with siblings, I would've done the same had that happened. And he didn't wind up killing him, which I feel allowed him to understand the gravity of his actions (though without any actual consequences, though I chalk that up to the fact Deku was there bc ya know,,,,, plot armor). He even apologized!!! He recognized what he did affected Deku, Todo, even Manual! Actually, especially Manual (That mf deserves a medal and a nice relaxing bath). Continuing on, when on the mission to save Bakugo, he tried to get them to stop by reminding them that they were a part of that incident and thus should know better (I might actually do a different post about Deku and Todo never have to face real consequences and thus continue to do dumb shit, but anyway-). And yea! He punched Deku! I'd be furious too! Like imagine your bestie trying to convince you breaking a certain law is totes okay xoxo rIGHT FUCKING AFTER you nearly fucked up your whole life for revenge.

I feel Iida knew that it wouldn't work, so he figured he could reign them in by joining them. And he did! Successfully! No one got hurt and Bakugo was okay
