The asset is programmed not to strike a handler. Not to struggle no matter who is doing what to it. And it complies. The asset is programmed not to shy away when technicians approach torch-first to take it apart and put it back together in the name of science, research, progress. And it complies. The asset is programmed not to object to the mouth guard, the restraints, the chair. Not to beg or plead when it is left empty and hungry in its cryo tube. And it complies. The asset is programmed not to so much as consider harming an operator, the highest of all members of the organization. And...
And if the silent, liquid fury in the asset’s eyes is any indicator, the asset does not comply.
(Or: The one where the asset is thawed out during the Chitauri attack on New York, escapes, and goes hunting for revenge with the Avengers hot on the trail.)
Part 2 Stitch Me Up I Chapters 82/? I
Therapy is a lot harder than Sam had let on, Steve thinks. Talking about things he’s never talked about, revealing things he’s never revealed. And to someone who’d started out a perfect stranger. It goes against every instinct in himself, all of which tell him to keep these things to himself, to let it all out only in the physical violence of a fist against a punching bag.
It’s been a month now since Bucky—Jigsaw—came back of his own volition after the auction debacle and his escape from the Tower. Since they first pissed off the FBI by ruining a handful of raids against Clint’s “tracksuit mafia.” Since they raided that bank vault and found everything waiting there inside it that Jigsaw had said would be there. Waiting, perhaps, to be used.
It’s been a month, but it feels so much longer.
(Or: The one where the Avengers have successfully brought the asset in after his murder sprees, and the therapy (and relationships) can begin in earnest. A direct sequel to Blue-Eyed Matador.)

I’m reading Bucky/Venom AU as happy freelance assassins who help Bruce out with a Ross problem and paused at this quote:

Where partnered means “assassin partner” and weird means Wade’s hot for V in a 4th wall slashfic way.

Ohmygod yes, the serum amplifies your “you-ness” and I think I’ve only once seen anyone ever apply that to Bucky. As the Winter Soldier in fact. All that kindness and loyalty and protectiveness and resilience (even his natural curiosity and wonderment) and it’s just exploited and used by his captors. It’s actually a really good series, A Hazy Shade of Winter by FlamingoQueen. If anyone knows any other fics that play with this, I’d really love to read them.

Also, I think on the other post someone had asked, the quote we have from canon about the effects of the serum is:
The serum amplifies everything that is inside, so good becomes great; bad becomes worse.
I think both the concrete and abstract reading of this is possible. Erskine could be talking about the serum quite literally amplifying character traits. I think you've got to be careful with this particular portrayal so that it doesn't fall into the trap of being deterministic, i.e. the very notion that Steve was trying to fight against, that goodness is inherent and your value is determined by birthright. Like yes, we all have variations in our personalities, but goodness comes from what we choose to prioritise. Steve’s personality and Sam’s personality are both very different, but they are both good people whose moral codes align.
The second, more abstract reading is that Erskine was saying the serum brought power, and power gave people confidence, and that confidence amplified people's desires. What made Steve special was that his biggest desire was to fight on behalf of the weak and marginalised. As opposed to Walker and Blonsky, who simply wanted to enforce the will of the American forces, or the Winter Soldiers, who presumably had their own motivations that made them dangerous once they realised they could overwhelm their handlers.
If we take this view, though, this means that what is amplified is people's willingness to take a risk and pick the battles they previously wouldn't, in other words, this is a choice-based "amplification".
Which brings me back to Bucky, who after the serum, had to have his choices taken away in order to make him pliable. This means whatever lay under all that mind control was a man who, if given the choice, would have worked against Hydra and all that it meant.

“Cryptid components?” Natasha asks, leaning forward. “What are those in the context of this mission?”
Strange shifts his eyes from Bucky to Natasha. “Nascent fishkin scales—” he starts.
“Fishstick what, now?” Stark interrupts.
“You would know them as merfolk,” Strange continues, “vampire teeth, chupacabras claws, cockatrice spurs, phoenix feathers, sasquatch fur.” He makes a dismissive motion with one hand. “The list is long and the specifics are immaterial.”

The Night War by praximeter - really good WWII era Bucky centric fic, historically accurate, heavy angst. 10/10. A lot of research definitely went into it and I cannot recommend it enough.
I’ll Explain Everything to the Geese by napricot - fucking hilarious, great SamBucky fic with a 10/10 relationship dynamic and some quality sam talks to birds content.
Barium Nights by LivingProof - very angsty, if u like to see Bucky suffer then this is a great fic for you. Amazing writing style. Excellent use of Madripoor as a setting.
Blue-Eyed Matador by FlamingoQueen - wanna see Bucky get revenge on Hydra? Very brutally? While the Avengers try to track him down? Set in an AU where Bucky escapes right after the battle of New York and the Avengers don’t know who he is while he’s systematically killing everybody who ever wronged him. WIP with 70+ chapters.

Commentary: Such a sweet meet cute with a few angsty moments and an ultimate happy ending. Loved that both Sam and Bucky’s trauma was explored and talked about and that they were able to move on and find happiness again.

Sam’s usual post-mission debrief doesn’t tend to include bald-faced lying about the circumstances of a mission failure, but when the truth is you fell through the ice and only survived via the ancient selkie art of rescue spooning in a poacher’s shack, you just gotta lie. After all, you can’t tell people your brand new boyfriend turns into a magical seal.
Commentary: You’re going to want to read this for two reasons: Adorably new-and-in-love sambucky and seal shenanigans! Be sure to take a look at the first part as well, that’s where all the magic starts. I’m loving Sam’s keen interest in all the magical details and the author’s talent for implied sexy times.

Commentary: Man... this is so beautiful it made me a bit teary. Sam is still dealing with Riley’s death, Riley features as a figment of Sam’s imagination and watches Sam slowly fall for Bucky. It’s dreamy and heartbreaking and beautifully written.

Bucky looks at Sam. Sam looks back at Bucky. Sam’s arms are crossed over his chest, his forearms bare. Bucky carefully doesn’t look at Sam’s forearms, or the way his t-shirt is pulled tight over his shoulders, straining just a little at the seams. Bucky’s not looking at that at all. He makes eye contact, careful to keep his face neutral.
Sam’s eyes are soft and dark. Maybe a little amused. He has very long eyelashes.
Bucky swallows hard.
“Great,” he says. “That’s just— great.”
Commentary: This was so much fun! They’re not clueless just stubborn and failing to be subtle but they get there in the end. Filled with plenty sexual tension and lively bickering - just the way we like it - all while on a mission in a lovely winery. Play spot the trope while you read!

Name: FlamingoQueen, or 'Mingo
Fandoms: I currently write in Captain America with some sorta crossovers into other MCU areas. I've written in others, and I read in many others, but this is my current home for the foreseeable future.
Where you post: AO3 and Tumblr
Most popular multi-chapter fic: Blue-eyed matador by quite a lot, with Revenge (best served screaming) as a runner up.
Favorite story you’ve written so far: You know, I'm still really partial to Partridge (pear tree not included)? Must be the red garland birds making me nostalgic. I also really do love the above two stories and Rescue Spooning 101, though.
Fic you were nervous to post: Blue-eyed matador, to some extent, because it's so long and I always worry about that, and because it's got a load of dark stuff before we hit fluff.
How you choose your titles: Depends on the fic/series. Sometimes I'll pic a line from the chapter for a chapter title, sometimes I'll go some lyrics, sometimes I'll go fandom tropes. The story title is usually several options until I have to post and then I pick the one that works the best.
Do you outline: Invariably. Sometimes that's just "Chapter: stuff i want to happen" and other times it's a trello board with 50 lists and dozens of cards for each one. Often it's somewhere in between. I adhere to the outline to the best of my ability because even when I do, things expand. If I didn't, the stories would grow to be endless and we'd never finish anything, haha!
Complete: Most of the Hazy fics, but not the Hazy series by a long shot. All of the currently-posted Fossilized fics, but not the Fossilized series by a long shot. Rescue Spooning 101, but not yet its sequel and not its series by a long shot...
In progress: Red Fish is still going, but slowly in the background because it requires such a dedicated mindset to get into it. Ice Fishing 101 is still going, and all but finished in my drafts, but I had too many posting at once and it was throwing me off, so now it'll be my mid-week story. Blue-eyed matador is still going and at a reasonable clip, too. I've got a buffer for that one, so I feel free to dabble in other fics while still working on that one.
Coming soon/not yet started: There are three distinct sequels planned for Revenge. One of them is mostly written, one of them is notes, and one of them is notes with a few scripts and a vague outline. I've got some holiday-themed sequel fluff for Matador written, but it'll be ages before I can post it. I've got a few Hazy works in progress that are as horrible as everything else in that series. I've got several mostly finished ficlets for the Henrietta series (Got Milk?) but I keep getting stuck on them. And I have another story in the Selkie series that's kind of fun and in progress. I haven't even started the other selkie story with Tony/Bucky, which is much darker. And I have a few more Fossilized fics that are halfway there or else are fully written but can't be posted yet because of the outline/timeline.
Do you accept prompts: Kind of. I'm sometimes terrible at delivering if the subject is one that just fizzles. I'm currently working on a few that I don't want to make too many promises about lest they utterly fall apart. Part of the risk with prompts is that I can't seem to write truly short things. So I end up making them very complicated, and then they get long, and then they turn into projects. So they're hard to do in a decent time period.
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: Honestly, might be the sequels for Revenge or the sequels for the Selkie series. I'd say Matador, but I'm currently working on that one with kind of a fever passion trying to get some tense scenes to resolve themselves and to navigate ways to move the story forward without skipping important details.

“Lots of motorcycles,” Bucky says, aiming for nonchalant and probably missing it by a mile. “Lots of leather. If you’re up for it…” He licks his lips, takes the plunge. “Maybe you want a cyborg cowboy bitch on the back of your bike as you zip up and down some country roads?”
Or: Bucky retreats to Texas to raise goats and work on his recovery, while Steve wrestles with shield and duty in New York. But life in Podunk, Texas (population: Bucky) isn’t what he expected it to be, not really. There’s a lot less cactus and a lot more goats. A lot more time to think and lot less Steve. That last is a problem. He really should have seen it coming.
